However, being married continuously for a prolonged period of time can significantly decrease the risk of developing dementia in old age.

This study by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH/FHI) analysed the marital status of people aged 44 to 68 years over a 24-year period. They found that a person's marital status impacts their chances of clinical diagnosis of dementia or mild cognitive impairment after the age of 70.

Among their subjects, they found that divorced and single people had a high incidence of decline in cognitive abilities.

Vegard Skirbekk, one of the researchers behind the study, says that this link between dementia and a person's marital status could be about having someone to help you cope with life and its stresses.

Skirbekk says that being married means we are not alone in the face of stress and have someone to talk to and share our burdens with.

This, as per him, helps "you cope better with adversity and as a result, you’re less subject to stress. A partner represents a security that provides a buffer."

Without the "buffer," we leave our brains open to an inflammatory stress hormone called cortisol, which can lead to brain damage over time.

But apparently, this is not the only way a marriage helps you avoid the risk of brain-related diseases. Living with a partner generally helps you develop healthy patterns. As Skirbekk puts it, if a doctor tells you that you're overweight, you can replace them, but "it's not as easy to change your spouse."

SCMP reports that, as per the researcher, "men are probably the greatest beneficiaries of a marital arrangement."

Previous studies have also suggested that long romantic partnerships serve a protective role. A 2018 meta-study which was based on 15 individual studies also reached the same conclusion and theorised that being married reduces the risk of dementia.&nbsp;

Another research, this one from 2020, concluded that divorced/widowed individuals, especially men, had a higher risk of dementia. There is more evidence that points the same way. A survey from the year 2019 found that of the 120,000 American men surveyed, the married ones were healthier.

A recent study has revealed that footballers are 50 per cent more likely to suffer from dementia compared to the rest of the population.

Researchers from Sweden's Karolinska Institutet&nbsp;published the study in the Lancet Public Health journal which compared 6,000 elite footballers' health records with more than 56,000 non-footballers between 1924 and 2019.

The study revealed that nine per cent of male footballers, who were playing in the Swedish top division, were diagnosed with neurodegenerative disease in comparison to six per cent from the control sample.

The study then examined the difference in outfield players and goalkeepers’ cognitive health and found that outfield players had more chances of suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. However, the goalkeepers who rarely head the ball had fewer chances of dementia, “supporting the hypothesis that mild head impacts sustained when heading the ball could explain the increased risk in outfield players,” concluded the study.

Karolinska Institutet's assistant professor and the study's co-author Peter Ueda said, “Importantly, our findings suggest that goalkeepers don’t have the same increased risk of neurodegenerative disease as outfield players. Goalkeepers rarely head the ball, unlike outfield players, but are exposed to similar environments and lifestyles during their football careers and perhaps also after retirement.”

Speaking about the possibility of heading the ball leading to dementia, UCL Genetics Institute's honorary professor David Curtis said, “It seems extremely plausible that repeatedly heading the ball during training and normal play produces brain damage which over time can result in dementia.”

Footballers have 50 per cent chances of developing dementia, study reveals

According to a first-of-its-kind study, published in the journal Neuroepidemiology, over 10 million older adults aged 60 or more in India may have dementia, comparable to the prevalence rates for the US, the UK and other countries.

The research&nbsp;used an artificial intelligence (AI) technique known as semi-supervised machine learning to analyse data from 31,477 older adults. The&nbsp;team of researchers found that the prevalence rate of dementia in people aged 60 or more in India could be a striking 8.44 per cent, which equals&nbsp;10.08 million older adults in the country.

This compares to prevalence rates recorded in similar age groups of 8.8 per cent in the US, 9 per cent in the UK and between 8.5 and 9 per cent in Germany and France, the researchers added.

The prevalence of dementia was greater in older people, women, who received no education, and lived in rural areas, according to the&nbsp;researchers.

“Our research was based on the first and only nationally representative ageing study in India with more than 30,000 participating older adults in the country,” said Haomiao Jin, co-author of the study and Lecturer in Health Data Sciences at the University of Surrey, UK.

“AI has a unique strength in interpreting large and complex data like this, and our research found that the prevalence of dementia may be higher than prior estimates from local samples,” Jin said in a statement.

The AI learning model was developed by research teams from the University of Surrey, the University of Southern California, the University of Michigan, and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

The model was trained on data, which consisted of about 70 per cent labelled dataset with dementia diagnoses from a novel online consensus.

The remaining 30 per cent of the data was reserved to assess the AI’s predictive accuracy.

Surprisingly, the AI taught itself to predict dementia status for unlabelled observations without dementia diagnoses in the dataset.

"The good news is that making healthy lifestyle choices in middle age may lead to a decreased risk of dementia later in life."

"It can be empowering for people to know that by taking steps such as exercising for half an hour a day or keeping their blood pressure under control, they can reduce their risk of dementia," added Rist.

The number of people living with dementia, which is one of the world’s biggest health threats,&nbsp;is forecast to nearly triple to 153 million by 2050. According to experts, it presents a major threat to future health and social care systems in almost every community and country.

A total of 1,771 women, which equals 13% of those who participated in the study, developed the health condition.

Susan Mitchell, head of policy at Alzheimer’s Research UK, also shared her views about the findings. She said that the study added to the overwhelming evidence that by exercising and eating healthily during middle age, people can reduce the risk of dementia in later life. "Beyond being active and looking after our heart, getting a good night’s sleep, challenging our brain and keeping connected to the people around us can all help reduce our chances of developing dementia," she added.

In order to counter this or diminish the effects of dementia, evidence from a recent study has shown that a healthy lifestyle can be beneficial to keep the memory of a person intact. All the previous research in this area has been insufficient to evaluate the effect of a healthy lifestyle on the trajectory of memory, but now we can say that healthy lifestyle choices are linked with softening the speed of memory decline.&nbsp;

"A combination of positive healthy behaviours is associated with a slower rate of memory decline in cognitively normal older adults", researchers from the National Centre for Neurological Disorders in Beijing, China, wrote in the BMJ.

Practising multiple healthy lifestyle choices together "was associated with a lower probability of progression to mild cognitive impairment and dementia", they added.

Researchers analysed 29,000 adults aged over 60 with normal cognitive function who were part of the China Cognition and Aging Study.

A healthy lifestyle score was calculated by combining six factors:

	<li>Regular exercise</li>
	<li>Active social contact</li>
	<li>Cognitive activity</li>
	<li>Non-smoking</li>
	<li>Not drinking alcohol</li>
</ul>

Based on their score, ranging from zero to six, participants were put into lifestyle groups, favourable (four to six healthy factors), average (two to three healthy factors), or unfavourable (0 to 1 healthy factors) – and into APOE-carrier and non-carrier groups.

The healthy lifestyle choices that can help slow down the rate of memory decline:&nbsp;

1. According to the research, a healthy diet was deemed as eating at least seven out of these 12 food groups: fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, dairy, salt, oil, eggs, cereals, legumes, nuts and tea.

2. Writing, reading, playing cards or other games at least twice a week was the second area of healthy behaviour.

3. Other areas included drinking no alcohol, exercising for more than 150 minutes a week at moderate intensity or more than 75 at a vigorous intensity, and never having smoked or been an ex-smoker.

4. Social contact at least twice a week was the sixth healthy behaviour, including activities such as visiting family and friends, attending meetings or going to parties.

After accounting for factors likely to affect the results, the researchers found that each individual healthy behaviour was associated with a slower-than-average decline in memory over 10 years.

Dr Susan Mitchell, head of policy at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said, "This is a well-conducted study, which followed people over a long period of time, and adds to the substantial evidence that a healthy lifestyle can help to support memory and thinking skills as we age."

The BMJ concluded, "People with four to six healthy behaviours or two to three were almost 90% and almost 30% respectively less likely to develop dementia or mild cognitive impairment relative to those who were the least healthy"

Social contact at least twice a week was the sixth healthy behaviour, including activities such as visiting family and friends, attending meetings or going to parties. A study published in Alzheimer's and Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association by researchers at Cambridge University shows that it is possible to spot signs of dementia as early as nine years before the patients have an official diagnosis.&nbsp;

These findings have implications for future at-risk patients who could be screened ahead of time and might benefit from early intervention to avoid developing dementia-related diseases, said the study.&nbsp;

The researchers analysed data from the United Kingdom’s biobank, a database and research resource which contains the anonymised genetic, lifestyle and health information from half a million participants in the UK participants aged 40-69.&nbsp;

The study found certain impairments across several tests including problem-solving tasks, reaction times, remembering lists of numbers, prospective memory and pair matching, which were seen years prior to the patient having an official diagnosis.&nbsp;

People who scored low on these tests also went on to develop Alzheimer’s disease and a rare form of dementia also known as frontotemporal dementia said the study. It also indicated that these people were also more likely than healthy adults to have had a fall in the past 12 months.&nbsp;

“When we looked back at patients’ histories, it became clear that they were showing some cognitive impairment several years before their symptoms became obvious enough to prompt a diagnosis. The impairments were often subtle, but across a number of aspects of cognition,” said one of the authors of the study, Nol Swaddiwudhipong.&nbsp;

&nbsp;He added, “This is a step towards us being able to screen people who are at greatest risk – for example, people over 50 or those who have high blood pressure or do not do enough exercise – and intervene at an earlier stage to help them reduce their risk.”&nbsp;

Dr Richard Oakley, associate director of research at the Alzheimer’s Society in the UK indicated that “for some people who go on to develop Alzheimer’s disease, memory and thinking problems can begin up to nine years before they receive a diagnosis”.&nbsp;

Therefore, by the time patients take part in the study it is already too late for the implementation of interventions that could alter the course, experts say.&nbsp;

"It's very useful to make sure that such patients get stimulated using puzzles, games, online messages, photographs of their past days and present days, and photographs of what is happening in the world to keep up with current affairs," he noted. "Results are heterogeneous as regards to other cognitive domains such as executive function, attention, memory, language and mild cognitive impairment. The identified neuroimaging studies consistently report associations between exposure to air pollution and white matter atrophy."

As to the exact pollutant having such effect in humans, the reports says that various studies have various opinions.

According to numbers available with UK's National Health Service (NHS), about 850,000 people in the UK suffer with dementia.

365,000 people between the ages 50 and 74 were observed for more than a decade. The participants reported how much tea or coffee they drank at the start of the study.

As the research went on, it was observed that 5,079 of the participants developed dementia. 10,053 of the participants had at least one stroke.

But there were people with lower risk of dementia and stroke. Researchers found those who had two to three cups of coffee or three to five cups of tea a day, or a combination of four to six cups of coffee and tea had the lowest risk.

A new study claims that negative thinking, especially fixating on negative&nbsp;thoughts can cause decline in one’s cognitive abilities, while increasing the load of two harmful proteins that cause Alzheimer’s disease.

"We propose that repetitive negative thinking may be a new risk factor for dementia," said the author of the study, Dr Natalie Marchant, in a statement.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers took into account 350 people above 55 over two years. The deposit of “tau” and “beta” was measured in the subjects. These are the two harmful proteins responsible for causing Alzheimer’s disease in adults.

Turner, 79, told CBS television in an interview that he had been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a progressive brain disorder.

"It's a mild case of what people have as Alzheimer's. It's similar to that. But not nearly as bad. Alzheimer's is fatal," Turner told journalist Ted Koppel in an interview to be broadcast on "CBS Sunday Morning."

CBS on Friday released advance excerpts of the interview, which was conducted at Turner's ranch in Montana earlier this year. Turner's office confirmed the diagnosis to Reuters.

"Thank goodness I don't have that. But, I also have got, let's - the one that's - I can't remember the name of it," Turner said.

"Dementia. I can't remember what my disease is," he added.

Asked what his symptoms are, Turner told Koppel, "Tired. Exhausted. That's the main symptoms, and forgetfulness."

Turner, also a noted philanthropist, founded CNN in 1980 as the first 24 hour all-news cable network. He went on to become vice chairman of media conglomerate Time Warner but quit in 2003 and is no longer involved in running the company.

Lewy body dementia affects an estimated 1.4 million Americans and symptoms can include problems with memory and changes in behavior, according to the Lewy Body Dementia Association.

A study published in The Lancet medical journal found that people who lived within 50 metres (55 yards) of high-traffic roads had a 7.0 per cent higher chance of developing dementia compared to those who lived more than 300 metres away from busy roadways.

&quot;Air pollutants can get into the blood stream and lead to inflammation, which is linked with cardiovascular disease and possibly other conditions such as diabetes. This study suggests air pollutants that can get into the brain via the blood stream can lead to neurological problems,&quot; said Ray Copes, an environmental and occupational health expert at Public Health Ontario (PHO) who conducted the study with colleagues from Canada&#39;s Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences.

The increase in the risk of developing dementia went down to 4.0 per cent if people lived 50 to 100 metres from major traffic, and to 2.0 per cent if they lived within 101 to 200 metres. At more than 200 metres, the elevated risk faded away.

The team also explored links between living close to major roads and Parkinson&rsquo;s disease and multiple sclerosis - two other major neurological disorders - but the findings suggested no increased risk of these from living near heavy traffic.

The scientists said their results could be used to help town and city planners take traffic conditions and air pollution into account as urban areas become more densely populated.
