Cyclone 'Biparjoy' intensifies further, very rough sea conditions to prevail, says IMD

Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ is set to intensify further in the next 48 hours towards northwest India, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) early on Thursday. This cyclone will likely influence the monsoon in the country, which will be favourable for the onset of monsoon over Kerala. The Met agency also signalled that cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ in the Arabian Sea would drive away clouds and moisture from the state, holding up the arrival of rains for the next three days.

India: Regions expected to get affected by Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’

The cyclone is expected to be felt in several southwestern states in India. By the evening of June 7, the winds may intensify to 95-105 km per hour, gusting up to 115 km per hour in the same area. Adjoining areas of the west-central and south Arabian Sea, and the coasts of north Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa are therefore likely to be most impacted by the storm.

On June 8, the wind speeds are expected to increase further, reaching 115-125 km per hour, gusting up to 140 km per hour from the evening. Areas along the Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra coasts will experience strong winds.

By June 9, wind speeds may escalate to 135-145 km per hour, gusting up to 160 km per hour from the evening, affecting the adjoining areas of the South Arabian Sea, Karnataka, and the Goa-Maharashtra coasts.

On June 10, gale winds with speeds of 145-155 km per hour, gusting up to 170 km per hour, are predicted over the central Arabian Sea. The adjoining areas of the south Arabian Sea, as well as the coasts of north Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra, will also be impacted.

Impact on weather in India

With the onset of the monsoon in Kerala already delayed, the Met department on Monday said the cyclonic storm is expected to critically influence the onset of monsoon towards the Kerala coast. The weather department is yet to give a tentative date for the arrival of the monsoon in Kerala while private forecasting agency Skymet Weather said it may happen on June 8 or June 9 that too with a “meek and mild entry”.

"These powerful weather systems in the Arabian Sea spoil the advancement of the monsoon deep inland. Under their influence, the monsoon stream may reach coastal parts but will struggle to penetrate beyond the Western Ghats," it said.

The southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala on June 1 with a standard deviation of about seven days. The IMD had earlier predicted that the monsoon might arrive in the southern state by June 4. While the onset of monsoon in Kerala got further delayed due to the formation of a low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea, it does not mean, according to scientists, that the monsoon will reach other parts of the country late. Cyclone 'Biparjoy' to intensify in next 24 hours, here's how it will impact monsoon in India

NASA scientists have found a vortex of relatively warm air swirling over the north pole in Uranus, providing strong evidence for the first time on the existence of a cyclone.

At least six people have been killed in Myanmar after a powerful storm, Cyclone Mocha, battered the nation. Officials evacuated some 1,000 people trapped by seawater along western Myanmar’s coast on Monday (May 15), while the country’s military leaders have declared Rakhine state a national disaster zone after the storm hit on Sunday.

The cyclone which brought strong winds and heavy rains has also injured more than 700 of about 20,000 people who were sheltering in buildings on the highlands of Sittwe township, reported the Associated Press, citing the leader of the Rakhine Youths Philanthropic Association in Sittwe, who asked not to be named.

The strife-torn Rakhine State bore the brunt of the storm with winds of up to 210 kph which ripped roofs off of the houses.

The cyclone is said to be one of the strongest this century to hit the Bay of Bengal as well as Myanmar and Bangladesh. So far, six deaths have been reported by Myanmar media and rescue groups.

Meanwhile, seawater raced into more than 10 low-lying wards along the coast after the cyclone made landfall in Rakhine state Sunday afternoon, reported AP. As per local media reports, more than 850 houses, 64 schools, 14 health facilities and seven communication towers in Myanmar were destroyed or damaged by the category-five storm as it pummelled the country’s coast.

'Very severe' cyclone Mocha hits Myanmar-Bangladesh border, threatens Rohingya refugees in low-lying regions

Cyclone Mocha intensified into a category five hurricane on Sunday, hours ahead of its predicted landfall in Myanmar and Bangladesh, where hundreds of thousands of people evacuated from the coasts were taking shelter. People have evacuated from low-lying coastal areas in Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Severe cyclone Mocha on Friday morning intensified over the southeast Bay of Bengal with winds of around 140-150 km/h with a 165 km/h gust. According to M Mohapatra, director general of India Meteorological Department (IMD), there are dry, continental winds blowing over all of east India in the general direction of Cyclone Mocha. On May 13 and 14, Mohapatra predicted rain and severe winds for the northeastern states.

Cyclone Mocha intensified into a "very severe" cyclonic storm today over the southeast and adjoining areas of the central Bay of Bengal. As per IMD, "The SCS "Mocha" intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm, lay centered at 05:30 hours IST of 12th May 2023 over central adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal near latitude 13.2N and long 88.1E, about 520 km west-northwest of Port Blair."

It has requested that farmers to rapidly harvest mature fruits and crops, stake and cover vegetable nurseries and orchards, refrain from using chemicals, and confine cattle to sheds.

The really rough to phenomenal sea (9–14 m wave height) is expected to have an impact on the shipping and offshore industries.
