Cricket Australia's (CA) new chairman Lachlan Henderson said on Thursday the board would reflect on its handling of Justin Langer's contract after the head coach's resignation in acrimony this month.

Langer had hoped for a long contract extension after Australia won the Twenty20 World Cup and thrashed England in the Ashes but the former test opener was offered only six months.

Former players and pundits said CA had treated Langer poorly, though test captain Pat Cummins endorsed the board`s decision and said players were ready for a new coach.

Henderson said the board might have dealt more quickly with Langer, given the weeks of media speculation that built after the Ashes over his future in the role.

"It is unfortunate that a bit of that played out in the media and we’ll reflect on whether that should have been accelerated through the summer," Henderson told reporters in Melbourne on Thursday.

"But it was always our intention to make that decision at the end of the summer, and we followed that process.

"It got messy in terms of things playing out in the media."

Henderson, a CA director for three years and chief executive of a major healthcare firm, replaced interim chairman Richard Freudenstein, who stepped into the role in October after predecessor Earl Eddings lost support from state member associations and resigned.

CA has been under the microscope since the Newlands ball-tampering scandal erupted in 2018 and triggered a scathing review of the board's governance.

CA was embarrassed in November when former test captain Tim Paine resigned over a four-year-old "sexting" scandal that the governing body elected to keep from the public.

Henderson said he would look to appoint an ethics commissioner early in his term to meet one of the unfulfilled recommendations of the 2018 governance review.

'It got messy': Cricket Australia's newly appointed chairman Lachlan Henderson on Justin Langer's exit

Lachlan Henderson is the new chairman of Cricket Australia (CA), taking up the position four months after his predecessor left amid lack of support.

Henderson, a former first-grade cricketer in Western Australia, has been a CA director for three years.

"As chair, my aim is to ensure the integrity and growth of the game in Australia with strong governance embedded at Cricket Australia and reflected in all levels of cricket, from elite teams to community clubs," Henderson said.

Justin Langer, on February 5, stepped down as the Australian team's head coach. Langer succeeded his former teammate Darren Lehmann at the top post in early 2018, following the spot-fixing scandal which rocked the Australian cricket. Since then, he did a remarkable job in once again lifting the national side and leading them to a 4-0 Ashes win, recently at home, and a maiden T20 World Cup title.

However, a lot has been said and written regarding Langer's method of coaching, which didn't go down nicely amongst the national players. "Justin was offered a short-term extension to his current contract, which sadly he has opted not to accept," stated an official Cricket Australia release.

Following Langer's exit, former Aussie pacer Mitchell Johnson lashed out at Test captain Pat Cummins and called him 'gutless'. Johnson feels that Cummins had an agenda of his own to bring down his national coach. Thus, Cummins recently opened up on Langer's exit and the criticism received while talking to reporters on Wednesday (February 8). He said, "I think he (Langer) tweaked and changed quite a bit. He deserves a lot of credit for that. I think the question then became do we think that it's sustainable. We thought it is the right time to make a change. I think some of these skill sets are perhaps a little bit different to perhaps his traditional coaching style."

"I think he tweaked his coaching style in the last six months and did a really good job, but we think now is the right time for a different direction. It's a matter of opinion but we think it's the right one. I don't think he should be surprised though, it's been two years of evaluation. I don't think there's any big surprise," he added.

On Johnson's comments, Cummins asserted, "Mitchell Johnson is just standing up for his mates. I absolutely disagree with what he said. No, he hasn't reached out, but that's fine. He's entitled to his opinion, he's standing up for his mate. I can hold my head high so I'm fine. I actually haven't really had much of it (personal criticism) before, so it's actually been good to get it out of the way early in the captaincy."

"I knew when I took on the job it's gonna come with added scrutiny. The last week's been good ... I'll cop it, but I'm absolutely fine with it. I know a lot of it's come from the right place. We all want to do what's best for Australian cricket. There's been a lot of emotion flying around. Added to the feedback, you've got to take everything in that kind of context. They're all people I really respect so I listen to them for sure. I'd welcome chatting to any of them directly about feedback and thoughts they have."

"We're custodians of the Australian cricket team. It's not forever. We just want to do what's best. Me as captain, I want to do what's best for Australian cricket and what's best for the team. It's a responsibility I've been given and I take that really seriously," the 28-year-old Cummins added.

Intensity wasn't the issue: Pat Cummins opens up on Justin Langer's resignation as Aussie head coach

Former Australia skipper Michael Clarke has urged current Aussie captain Pat Cummins to clarify his stand on the ongoing saga involving Justin Langer's shock resignation as head coach. Cummins has been facing intense criticism from some former Australian cricketers, who have slammed him for not taking a stand for Langer and playing a role in his resignation as head coach.

Langer submitted his resignation from the head coach post last week, days after having helped Australia win the Ashes emphatically by 4-0 at home against arch-rivals England. He had last year inspired the team to a memorable maiden T20 World Cup triumph in the UAE and was expected to get an extension as the head coach of the side.

However, Langer was offered a short-term contract extension by Cricket Australia. The former Australia batter decided to turn down the offer and resigned from the post of head coach amid reports that the payers were not happy with his strict coaching style and wanted him to be pushed out.

As Cummins faces criticism for not taking a stand for Langer, Clarke said the Australian skipper needs to come out clear as his clean reputation has already taken a hit.

"The Australian public isn't stupid and this is my point with Pat Cummins. His reputation is squeaky-clean. Right now it has taken a hit, until he stands there and voices his opinion. Look what Mitchell Johnson said about Pat Cummins. A teammate, a friend of his has smoked him," Clarke said while speaking on The Big Sports Breakfast on Monday.

"My advice to Patty is he has got to stand there. He needs to tell the fans where he sits on this because everyone thinks it is Patty who made the decision. That accountability sits with him. He is trying to honour both parties and has done it very well. He is trying to look after Cricket Australia. I don't like seeing Pat get smacked for this because I think he is in a lose-lose situation. He sits right in the middle," he added.

A number of former Australian cricketers including the likes of Mitchell Johnson and Steve Waugh among others have slammed Cummins for not standing up for Langer. Clarke urged Cummins to stand tall and explain to the former Aussie stars the exact situation which led to Langer's decision of quitting as the head coach of the team.

"I saw Mitchell Johnson's comments, he smoked him. I think a lot of people are thinking what Mitch is thinking. You've got the likes of Mark Taylor talking about it, Steve Waugh making comments, Ricky Ponting's comments are very strong. I'm suggesting to Pat Cummins as the leader, he needs to stand tall and explain to past players -- Mitchell Johnson, Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden -- plus the fans and cricket lovers, what the hell is going on here," said Clarke, who led Australia to a World Cup triumph in 2015.

'Australian public is not stupid': Clarke urges Pat Cummins to clear his stand on Langer's shock resignation

Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting on Saturday termed Australian head coach Justin Langer`s resignation, five months before his term expired, "a really sad day", while another stalwart, Matthew Hayden, castigated Test skipper Pat Cummins for failing to publicly endorse the 51-year-old Langer to get a new contract.

Langer had taken charge of the Australian team in 2018 following the `Sandpaper gate` scandal, and while he was reportedly unpopular with some player in the side, he guided the team to its maiden ICC T20 World Cup title triumph in the UAE in November last year and the 4-0 Ashes victory recently.

Langer resigned from his post on Saturday, unhappy with the short-term contract extension offered by Cricket Australia (CA) after a marathon seven-hour board meeting.

Both Ponting and Hayden are Langer`s former teammates and close friends and they slammed CA for its handling of the matter, less than two months before the start of one of the most crucial Test and One-day International (ODI) series against Pakistan.

"I think it`s a really sad day as far as Australian cricket is concerned," Ponting told ABC radio on Saturday. "And if you look back, it`s been a really poor six months. I think of the way that Cricket Australia as a whole have handled some of the better people in Australian cricket, Justin Langer and Tim Paine, I think it`s been almost embarrassing with the way they`ve handled those two cases."

Paine stepped down as Australian Test skipper weeks before the start of the Ashes last year after a sexting scandal was revealed. He later took an indefinite break from all forms of cricket.

A CA statement did not "address specifics of the review into Langer`s future, other than to confirm he had been offered a short-term contract extension," a report in cricket.com.au said.

"CA would like to thank Justin for his outstanding leadership since he became Australian men`s team coach in 2018 and for guiding the team to the T20 World Cup title last year and the 4-0 Ashes victory," the CA statement read.

"It was absolutely clear that no one backed him," an emotional Hayden told the ABC.

"If you listen to the Australian captain (Cummins) the other day not mention once any kind of commendation or support for him, I don`t think (Justin) would be going very well at all. That would be extremely hurtful. The whole thing just reeks of being orchestrated, basically from the moment all of this garbage started coming out (about Langer`s coaching style) in winter last year. You could see the writing was on the wall," added Hayden.

Cummins has never publicly endorsed Langer`s contract extension, and as recently as February 2 he avoided speaking on the head coach`s future, saying it is the job of CA to decide. "It`s part of speculation which I don`t think is really healthy. I just don`t want to add to it. That`s Cricket Australia`s job. It`s not my job," Cummins was quoted as saying by ABC News.

Langer reportedly had an uneasy relationship with some players in the squad, and things came to a boil following Australia`s away defeat to Bangladesh in a T20I series last year. The Cricket Australia management and the Australian cricket team leadership group had to sit down to resolve the crisis.

"Deep down, Pat (Cummins) might have known that this day was coming," Ponting said. "If he had have gone on the front foot and endorsed Justin, they would have been in a position where they wouldn`t have been able to move on from him.

"If it`s not just him, if there are other players that are coming to him and letting him know that maybe they feel that Justin is not the right man, I think that actually puts Pat in a difficult position as well.

"I am very close to Justin, we`re like brothers, but I`ve not got too heavily involved in this because... there`s no way that I could change the way that this looked like it was heading. What`s happened today, I`ve sort of felt that has been heading that way for quite a while," added Ponting.

Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden slam Cricket Australia as Justin Langer quits as head coach

Australian pacer Mitchell Starc made a startling revelation about almost giving up on playing cricket after winning the prestigious Allan Border medal on Saturday (January 29). Starc was named Australia's Male Cricketer of The Year 2021 for his brilliant performances across all formats last year.

Starc took 43 wickets across all formats for Australia in 2021 to become only the fifth bowler in history to clinch the top honour at the Cricket Australia awards on Saturday. Despite being one of the senior members in the current Aussie squad, Starc won the Male Cricketer of the Year award for the first time in his career this time around.

Starc, however, didn't have a fairytale journey to the top honour and had to deal with his own share of struggles. The left-arm pacer recalled up and downs he had to undergo on and off-field, and revealed he was almost on the verge of giving up cricket. Starc revealed he thought he would never play cricket again at one stage last year.

I'm not really sure what words to say at the moment. It was a huge surprise. To look at some of those names who have won it before, it'll take a bit to sink in. Hugely honoured to receive this award," Starc said on Channel 7.

“Obviously last year was particularly tough on and off the field. I probably didn’t play the cricket I wanted to and, at certain stages, I probably didn’t want to play cricket at all,” he added.

'Didn't want to play cricket': Mitchell Starc makes shocking revelation after winning Allan Border medal

Australia's cricketing chiefs said Monday they were assisting a police investigation into shock allegations that an under-19 cricketer was sexually assaulted while on tour in India and Sri Lanka in the 1980s.

Cricket Australia said it supported ex-Australian under-19 Jamie Mitchell, whose claims that he was raped on the tour by a team official were first reported by national broadcaster ABC on Sunday.

"We acknowledge and applaud the courage of Jamie Mitchell in speaking out about his experience," the governing body said in a statement, adding that it was "fully assisting" a police probe.

"We have no tolerance for any form of abuse," said Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley.

Mitchell told ABC he was sexually assaulted in Colombo on the last night of the tour in 1985.

A team official named in the ABC report denied wrongdoing and no charges have been made.

"Instead of being a highlight of my cricketing life, that tour has caused me trauma and distress over many years," Mitchell said in a statement released by his lawyers to Australian media.

"Cricket Australia has a chance to distinguish itself by facing up to this issue and doing the right thing.

"And that means transparency, starting with proper answers to many questions. I'm going to send a list of them to Cricket Australia."

Former Australian captain Greg Chappell, who was a national selector at the time of the alleged attack, told Nine Entertainment newspapers that he was appalled by the allegations.

"I would hope that CA will respond in a human way and deal empathetically with the individuals rather than try to defend the organisation," he said.

"It was a shocking revelation. I would have hoped nothing like that had happened, but realism tells you that other areas of life have seen that sort of thing go on."

A spokesman for the Australian Federal Police said they do not comment on "specific investigations".

Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley moved to allay fears Monday over the remainder of the Ashes series after England were rocked by a Covid scare, but admitted it was a "day-by-day proposition".

Four members of the England camp -- two support staff and two family members -- tested positive for coronavirus just hours before the start of day two in the third Test in Melbourne.

The team and management were required to undergo urgent rapid antigen tests as they were about to leave their hotel for the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

They were given the all-clear barely 45 minutes before play was due to begin.

"The affected individuals are currently isolating," Cricket Australia said, adding that the entire playing group were negative.

"The England cricket team will also have PCR tests today and both teams will take extra precautions throughout play," CA added.

Australian broadcaster the Seven Network also said there had been a positive case among its staff working at the MCG, forcing last-minute changes to their commentary team.

Driven by the Omicron variant, coronavirus cases are surging in Australia -- particularly in Sydney -- where the fourth Test is scheduled in January before the Ashes finale in Hobart.

More than 6,000 cases are being reported daily across New South Wales state, where Sydney is located.

Nevertheless, Hockley said the plan was to press on as scheduled with the Ashes.

"That's absolutely the plan. There's nothing to suggest otherwise. We'll rely on the protocols. It's a day-by-day proposition," he told reporters.

"I can't tell you the amount of work going on behind the scenes. The diligence of our medical team and players, the diligence with which they're working through each of the protocols is extremely impressive.

"They're very calm, they know this is what they need to do."

'We'll rely on the protocols': CA wants Ashes to continue despite COVID-19 cases in England camp

Australia has appointed Pat Cummins as the new captain of the Test side and Steve Smith as the vice-captain in the aftermath of Tim Paine's sexting scandal. Paine had stepped down as the captain of the Test side earlier this month due to his involvement in the sexting scandal. The wicket-keeper batter has opted for a mental break from cricket and will not feature in the upcoming Ashes 2021-2022.

While Cummins' appointment as the captain of the Test side has been welcomed by many, the decision to appoint Smith as the vice-captain of the side has not gone down well with many. Former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell has lashed out at Cricket Australia for handing out different treatment to David Warner and Smith.

Chappell is not happy with the fact that Smith has returned in a leadership role while Warner is barred from taking any captaincy roles in the future. Both Smith and Warner were banned for one year each by Cricket Australia for their involvement in the ball-tampering scandal which rocked Australian cricket in 2018.

“For starters, I have a problem — why is Steve Smith looked upon as a different punishment to David Warner? In fact, if anything, I think Smith’s crime was greater. For a captain to say, ‘I don’t want to know’ when cheating is involved, is not correct," said Chappell while speaking on 2GB’s Wide World of Sports radio on Saturday.

Chappell said both Warner and Smith should be banned from taking captaincy roles for life or they both should have the chance of leading the side. He called it unfair to bar Warner from leading the side while appointing Smith as the vice-captain.

“A captain’s got to know, he’s got to find out and he’s got to do something about it. Either Smith has a two-year ban from captaincy and so does Warner, or Smith has a life ban and so does Warner,” Chappell said.

Chappell also shared his two cents on Paine's sexting scandal and said had he done the same mistake, he would have expected Cricket Australia to sack him as captain but let him continue playing as a player.

“Cheating is cheating, whether it’s big cheating or little cheating, it’s still cheating in my book. If I’d have cheated as an Australian captain — I mean I made a lot of mistakes but I didn’t cheat. And if I had cheated, and if I had done what Tim Paine did, I would have expected Cricket Australia to not ask me to resign, they would have taken the job away from me and made sure I didn’t continue to play as a player,” Chappell added.

CA committed to support under-fire Tim Paine as he opts for indefinite break from cricket

Tim Paine took over as Australia's Test captain following the sandpaper gate in early 2018, forcing then skipper Steve Smith to step aside from the post. While Paine did lead the side relatively well and enjoyed some good success, his tenure also ended in a controversial manner with his sexting scandal being exposed.

With Paine stepping aside as the Test captain as soon as the sexting scandal broke out, pacer Pat Cummins and ex-skipper Smith were interviewed by a Cricket Australia panel -- as per a report in Sydney News Herald -- for the position of skipper and deputy, respectively, on Wednesday (November 24). The entire process has brought CA a step closer to revealing Cummins as the next Test skipper.

For the unversed, if Smith gets the vice-captain post, it will be the first time that the dependable batsman will regain leadership responsibilities post the sandpaper gate fiasco in 2018. It is believed that both Cummins and Smith appeared before a committee comprising selectors George Bailey and Tony Dodemaide, chief executive Nick Hockley, chair Richard Freudenstein and board member Mel Jones to share their vision for the men's Test team going forward.

It is also to be noted that Australia's head coach Justin Langer is not a part of the panel who have been assigned to pick Paine's successor in the purest format.

Pat Cummins interviewed by CA for Test captaincy, Steve Smith likely to be pacer's deputy: Reports

Tim Paine's sexting scandal became a dark chapter in the history of Australian cricket that has faced controversies like ball-tampering, racism, etc in the past. Paine resigned as the Test captain on November 19 over sending inappropriate text messages to a former female colleague in 2017.

'Sportspersons are human. Stop the judgement': Shane Warne defends Tim Paine over sexting scandal

Former Australia Test captain Tim Paine's 'sexting scandal' is turning uglier with each passing day as now another report claims that the former Cricket Tasmania staffer who received explicit text messages in 2017, formally contacted the Cricket Australia the following year requesting an apology from the cricketer and the sum of $40,000 to cover her legal costs.

According to Sydney Morning Herald, representatives of CA were also handed a printed copy of the text messages and images by a representative of the former staffer in January 2019.

"CA has confirmed to The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald that the staffer contacted the governing body multiple times in the second half of 2018, requesting an apology from Paine and money to cover her legal costs in an ongoing dispute with Cricket Tasmania," the report said.

The emails sent by the staffer to CA were addressed to Christine Harman, the organisation`s head of legal affairs, and shared with a select group of senior staff at the time.

"In Harman's response in early November, the request was declined on the basis that it was a dispute between the staffer and two employees of Cricket Tasmania, as Paine was not a CA contracted player at the time of the text exchanges in November 2017 on the night before and the morning of the first Test of that summer`s Ashes series.

IN PICS: From 'John' the bookmaker to Paine's sexting: Controversies that have tainted Australian cricket since 1981 "CA has confirmed to The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald that the staffer contacted the governing body multiple times in the second half of 2018, requesting an apology from Paine and money to cover her legal costs in an ongoing dispute with Cricket Tasmania," the report said. After Tim Paine resigned as Australian Test cricket captain on November 19 over exchanging inappropriate text messages with a former female colleague in 2017, Australian selectors are looking for options to replace him ahead of the Ashes series. While addressing the press, teary-eyed Paine said that his actions in 2017 "do not meet the standard of an Australian cricket captain".

Latest reports have suggested that former skipper and batting mainstay Steve Smith emerged as one of the candidates for captaincy. Media reports further stated that selectors approached the country's cricket board. Steve Smith for Test captaincy? Australian selectors looking for options after Tim Paine's sexting scandal

From 'John' the bookmaker to Paine's sexting: Controversies that have tainted Australian cricket since 1981

Former Australia captain Kim Hughes has slammed Cricket Australia (CA) for appointing Tim Paine as captain of the Test team despite being aware of his off-field scandal. Paine stepped down as the captain of the Australian Test team on Friday (November 19) owing to his involvement in a sexting scandal dating back to 2017.

Paine had exchanged lewd text messages and graphic images with one of his female co-workers in 2017. Cricket Australia and Cricket Tasmania conducted an investigation into the matter at the time and had ruled that Paine didn't break the Cricket Australia Code of Conduct. The investigation ruled that the exchange was mutual between two adults and was not repeated.

However, on Friday, Paine admitted his actions from 2017 were regrettable and 'do not meet the standard of an Australian cricket captain, or the wider community'. Thus, he decided to quit as Test captain of the Australian team just days ahead of the start of the Ashes 2021-22.

"Paine did what he had to do but what I find staggering is that Cricket Australia reviewed the situation and did nothing," Hughes said while speaking to Five AA radio in Adelaide.

"The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. Integrity? You've got to be kidding me. For god's sake. You found that out and then said well that's still acceptable and to appoint him captain? Give me a break. It's absolutely staggering," he added.

The one-off Test between Afghanistan and Australia is in jeopardy, with Chief executive of Cricket Australia (CA), Nick Hockley said that Cricket Australia will "most likely" postpone the match.

CA warned last month to cancel the Test, which is set to begin on November 27 in Hobart, if the Taliban administration, which took control of Afghanistan in August, would not let women and girls participate.

Officials and players, notably Test captain Tim Paine, have raised reservations about playing in Afghanistan if women's cricket is prohibited.

Historic Australia-Afghanistan Test likely to be postponed, hints CA chief Nick Hockley

Afghanistan is in total mayhem ever since the Taliban group took over from the government. Since then, a series of bomb blasts near the Kabul airport led to the killing of several, many have managed to leave the troubled country whereas some are facing oppression.

While the Taliban invasion meant uncertainty for all in terms of their future in the country, as they remain perplexed on how to adapt and live in their homeland, the terror outfit gave green signal for the cricketing activities to continue for the men's national team. At the same time, they snatched away the freedom of the women's team, not allowing them to continue with the sport.

Amid all this, news came that Afghanistan's scheduled one-off Test versus Australia, in Hobart, in November will go ahead as planned. However, the Cricket Australia (CA) have now released a statement, revealing their stance on the one-off Test. It says that they will have to cancel the historic Test if Taliban bans women's cricket in Afghanistan.

"Driving the growth of women’s cricket globally is incredibly important to Cricket Australia," the statement from CA read.

"Our vision for cricket is that it is a sport for all and we support the game unequivocally for women at every level. If recent media reports that women’s cricket will not be supported in Afghanistan are substantiated, Cricket Australia would have no alternative but to not host Afghanistan for the proposed Test Match due to be played in Hobart. We thank the Australian and Tasmanian Governments for their support on this important issue."

As per the International Cricket Council's (ICC) regulations, the nations that are granted Test status are required to field both men's and women's teams. Thus, it is expected that even the ICC will have to step up sooner than later to take a call on Afghanistan's status as a full member if the women's team future remains in jeopardy.

Afghanistan-Australia Test to be cancelled? CA threatens to call off historic tie if Taliban bans women's cricket

Cricket Australia say they are still hoping a planned Test match against Afghanistan will go ahead, despite the Taliban takeover of the country and acute uncertainty over their rule.

The governing body said preparations for the one-off match in Hobart beginning November 27 were proceeding as planned.

"Cricket Australia's planning for the historic first Test match between Australia and Afghanistan in Hobart is well underway," CA said on its website late Tuesday.

"There is goodwill between CA and the Afghanistan Cricket Board to make the match happen."

However, Australian Test captain Tim Paine has backed Langer as the coach of the team. Paine said he and other senior players had cleared the air with Langer and that the coach was not to blame for the team's recent setbacks in the West Indies and Bangladesh.

"It was important that myself, Aaron Finch, Pat Cummins and the leaders of Australian cricket got around him, discussed things that needed to be discussed and then got around him and supported him to move forward," Paine said on radio station SEN Hobart on Friday.

"The last few days we've really been able to galvanise around him, to have some really robust discussions on where we want to take this cricket team, what we expect of him and what he expects of us."

This week, Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley said that Langer was contracted through to mid-2022 and praised him for helping rally the team when he took over in the wake of the Newlands ball-tampering scandal in 2018.

"It’s been a bit of a shame the last week that a lot of the failings around Australian cricket have been pinned on JL (Langer)," added Paine.

"That’s certainly not the case. We haven’t lived up to our own standards on the field."

"We have seen the women's game rise to a new level in recent times and it is important we provide the platform for that trend to continue."

The Test match will take place from September 30 to October 3.

"The WACA Ground and Manuka Oval are terrific venue for Test cricket and with first-class ground staff, we are extremely confident that the facilities for the two women's Tests will be of the highest standard."

The decision was taken after ECB was criticised for providing a used pitch to the women's team. England women's team captain Heather Knight had expressed her disappointment on playing on a used pitch.

ECB had apologised for providing a used pitch for the one-off Test between INDW vs ENGW.

"We are all disappointed that the wicket for the LV= Insurance Test match against India will have had 37 overs played on it. We know that England Women deserve a fresh wicket and we are sorry that we were unable to provide that in this instance.

"We accept that this issue shouldn't have arisen and we will make sure it doesn't happen in the future," a spokesperson from the ECB had said.

Cricket Australia on Saturday said that the Indian women team's Test against Australia will be played on a fresh pitch at the WACA Ground in Perth unlike ECB's decision of conducting the one-off match on the used track.

Cricket: Major stars opt out of Australian squad for West Indies tour

Tim Paine has backed Marnus Labuschagne to assume control over the captaincy in the future. The Test skipper commended Labuschagne for his inherent capacity, backing him to turn into an extraordinary skipper for Australia.

Labuschagne has ascended to No.3 in the Test rankings since making his first appearance in 2018 and is an essential machine gear piece in Australia's Test series.

Paine addressed the media, where he asserted Labuschagne is headed to getting one of Australia's new leaders.

“He's got some real natural leadership ability and if that's harnessed and helped, I think he'll be a great captain. He's got leadership in him, there's no doubt about that – the way he goes about it, the way he treats people, the way he works on his game, with some time (he) will become an excellent leader for this squad," Paine said.

Labuschagne hasn't had a lot of captaincy experience, with Queensland veteran Usman Khawaja generally taking up the captaincy job for the side. In any case, Paine was unreserved in his recognition for the 26-year-old, recommending how Labuschagne is the future of Australian cricket.

"I think he'd be a good leader, Marnus is a great thinker of the game. He's a good team man, he's got so much enthusiasm for his team and the game. With Marnus it's about him evolving into leading more and being more of a leader. He's come into our group and been a really infectious, energetic guy which has been fantastic for our team, but I think in terms of our cricket team improving and Marnus evolving, I think in the next couple of years we'll definitely see him take the step up” - he added.

Paine isn't the solitary Australian who sees authority potential in Marnus Labuschagne. Ricky Ponting had anticipated the humble batsmen would be in the captaincy figuring in 2020.

For the present, Labuschagne stays an external pick for Australia's captaincy. Steve Smith and Pat Cummins stay in front of him in the hierarchy as Australia venture up their making arrangements for their next era in worldwide cricket.
