Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting on Saturday termed Australian head coach Justin Langer`s resignation, five months before his term expired, "a really sad day", while another stalwart, Matthew Hayden, castigated Test skipper Pat Cummins for failing to publicly endorse the 51-year-old Langer to get a new contract. 
 
Langer had taken charge of the Australian team in 2018 following the `Sandpaper gate` scandal, and while he was reportedly unpopular with some player in the side, he guided the team to its maiden ICC T20 World Cup title triumph in the UAE in November last year and the 4-0 Ashes victory recently. 
 
Langer resigned from his post on Saturday, unhappy with the short-term contract extension offered by Cricket Australia (CA) after a marathon seven-hour board meeting. 
 
Both Ponting and Hayden are Langer`s former teammates and close friends and they slammed CA for its handling of the matter, less than two months before the start of one of the most crucial Test and One-day International (ODI) series against Pakistan. 
 
"I think it`s a really sad day as far as Australian cricket is concerned," Ponting told ABC radio on Saturday. "And if you look back, it`s been a really poor six months. I think of the way that Cricket Australia as a whole have handled some of the better people in Australian cricket, Justin Langer and Tim Paine, I think it`s been almost embarrassing with the way they`ve handled those two cases." 
 
Paine stepped down as Australian Test skipper weeks before the start of the Ashes last year after a sexting scandal was revealed. He later took an indefinite break from all forms of cricket. 
 
A CA statement did not "address specifics of the review into Langer`s future, other than to confirm he had been offered a short-term contract extension," a report in cricket.com.au said. 
 
"CA would like to thank Justin for his outstanding leadership since he became Australian men`s team coach in 2018 and for guiding the team to the T20 World Cup title last year and the 4-0 Ashes victory," the CA statement read. 
 
"It was absolutely clear that no one backed him," an emotional Hayden told the ABC. 
 
"If you listen to the Australian captain (Cummins) the other day not mention once any kind of commendation or support for him, I don`t think (Justin) would be going very well at all. That would be extremely hurtful. The whole thing just reeks of being orchestrated, basically from the moment all of this garbage started coming out (about Langer`s coaching style) in winter last year. You could see the writing was on the wall," added Hayden. 
 
Cummins has never publicly endorsed Langer`s contract extension, and as recently as February 2 he avoided speaking on the head coach`s future, saying it is the job of CA to decide. "It`s part of speculation which I don`t think is really healthy. I just don`t want to add to it. That`s Cricket Australia`s job. It`s not my job," Cummins was quoted as saying by ABC News.

"Deep down, Pat (Cummins) might have known that this day was coming," Ponting said. "If he had have gone on the front foot and endorsed Justin, they would have been in a position where they wouldn`t have been able to move on from him. 
 
"If it`s not just him, if there are other players that are coming to him and letting him know that maybe they feel that Justin is not the right man, I think that actually puts Pat in a difficult position as well. 
 
"I am very close to Justin, we`re like brothers, but I`ve not got too heavily involved in this because... there`s no way that I could change the way that this looked like it was heading. What`s happened today, I`ve sort of felt that has been heading that way for quite a while," added Ponting.

Australia's cricketing chiefs said Monday they were assisting a police investigation into shock allegations that an under-19 cricketer was sexually assaulted while on tour in India and Sri Lanka in the 1980s.

Cricket Australia said it supported ex-Australian under-19 Jamie Mitchell, whose claims that he was raped on the tour by a team official were first reported by national broadcaster ABC on Sunday.

"We acknowledge and applaud the courage of Jamie Mitchell in speaking out about his experience," the governing body said in a statement, adding that it was "fully assisting" a police probe.

"We have no tolerance for any form of abuse," said Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley.

Mitchell told ABC he was sexually assaulted in Colombo on the last night of the tour in 1985.

A team official named in the ABC report denied wrongdoing and no charges have been made.

"Instead of being a highlight of my cricketing life, that tour has caused me trauma and distress over many years," Mitchell said in a statement released by his lawyers to Australian media.

"Cricket Australia has a chance to distinguish itself by facing up to this issue and doing the right thing.

"And that means transparency, starting with proper answers to many questions. I'm going to send a list of them to Cricket Australia."

Former Australian captain Greg Chappell, who was a national selector at the time of the alleged attack, told Nine Entertainment newspapers that he was appalled by the allegations.

"I would hope that CA will respond in a human way and deal empathetically with the individuals rather than try to defend the organisation," he said.

"It was a shocking revelation. I would have hoped nothing like that had happened, but realism tells you that other areas of life have seen that sort of thing go on."

A spokesman for the Australian Federal Police said they do not comment on "specific investigations".

More than 6,000 cases are being reported daily across New South Wales state, where Sydney is located.

Nevertheless, Hockley said the plan was to press on as scheduled with the Ashes.

"That's absolutely the plan. There's nothing to suggest otherwise. We'll rely on the protocols. It's a day-by-day proposition," he&nbsp;told reporters.

"I can't tell you the amount of work going on behind the scenes. The diligence of our medical team and players, the diligence with which they're working through each of the protocols is extremely impressive.

"They're very calm, they know this is what they need to do."

The batsman had hinted that the bowlers in the match knew about ball-tampering. However, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon, who featured in the Test match, issued a statement to clarify that they were unaware of the incident. In his latest column for The Telegraph, Vaughan wrote that the Sandpaper gate has shown 'cracks' in the Australian team. He even added that England's Test captain, Joe Root, will be enjoying it. “Dragging up the ball-tampering scandal has shown there are cracks in the Australia team that England could exploit if they start the Ashes series well later this year. David Warner, Steve Smith and the bowlers are under scrutiny again, and it would only take a poor Australia performance in the first Ashes Test for the pressure to mount. The captain, Tim Paine, is under the microscope after defeat by India, and while some think this could galvanise Australia, rarely are such public problems good for a team's unity. "Joe Root will be enjoying this and thinking it could help. He knows an argument or two in the opposing team is always good. But fundamentally, England still have to play great cricket to win in Australia. They should not become distracted by Australia’s problems. Enjoy it in private, but rise above it in public,” Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegraph as reported by The Sydney Morning Herald. “England have enough to worry about in their own backyard, by making sure they arrive with a settled batting unit, a fit bowling attack and a team who can ultimately win in those conditions. There are cracks in the England team as well, and I see two sides who are quite similar. Both are quite vulnerable and that should make for a fascinating contest,” he wrote. Cricket Australia has released the schedule for the much-anticipated Ashes series. The Australian cricket board are hopeful to stage the series in front of a full crowd, however, they said that will follow government advice when it came to admitting travelling supporters. According to the schedule, the Ashes is will kick off at the Gabba in Brisbane on December 8. Followed by a pink ball Test at the Adelaide Oval, then Melbourne hosting the traditional Boxing Day Test match. Sydney and Perth will host the remaining two games of the five-match Test series.
