Cricket Australia (CA) on Sunday said it has signed a seven-year deal with Disney Star to broadcast the country’s cricket matches in India, the sport’s largest market in the world. As part of the deal, which commences in 2023-24, Disney Star will televise all internationals matches as well as the KFC Big Bash League and Weber Women’s Big Bash League in India.

Disney Star will take over from Sony, who have held the Australian rights since the 2017-18 season. According to CA, the channel’s reach will provide “enormous exposure” for Australian cricket and for the board’s commercial partners in India.

“We are delighted to announce this new association with Disney Star from season 2023-24 onwards. Disney Star is synonymous with the game in India and we look forward to working with them to showcase the outstanding cricket played in Australia every summer,” said CA CEO Nick Hockley.

South Africa have withdrawn from the one-day international series with Australia in January after host board Cricket Australia (CA) was unable to accommodate a request to reschedule. Cricket South Africa (CSA) had asked to shift the series, which was scheduled for Hobart (Jan. 12), Sydney (Jan. 14) and Perth (Jan. 17), as it clashes with their new domestic Twenty20 competition.

"Unfortunately, due to the congested international schedule including the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, there are no alternative dates available," CA said in a statement on Wednesday. CA said South Africa had agreed that Australia would be awarded the competition points, pending approval from the International Cricket Council.

"CSA offered four options (for new dates). Unfortunately, and to our disappointment, none of these were acceptable to Cricket Australia," CSA Chief Executive Officer Pholetsi Moseki said in a statement on Wednesday. "As difficult as this decision has been, the long-term sustainability of our new T20 League is reliant on having all our domestic players available."

South Africa`s forfeit could affect their chances of qualifying directly for next year's one-day World Cup in India. The Proteas are 11th in the World Cup Super League standings, with only the top seven teams apart from hosts India to qualify directly for the 10-team tournament.

"We are confident that our in-form Proteas team will garner the requisite points through the remaining games to secure automatic qualification," Moseki said. South Africa`s test team are scheduled to tour Australia for a three-match series starting in Brisbane on Dec. 17.

Australia pulled out of their test tour of South Africa last year citing heath risks amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a decision greeted by disappointment and frustration by Cricket South Africa.

South Africa pull out of Australia ODI series, putting 2023 World Cup qualification in a fix

Justin Langer did a reasonably good job as the Australian men's cricket team's head coach from early 2018 to 2022. Under Langer, Australia revamped post the infamous ball-tampering saga and went onto draw the Ashes 2019, reach the semi-finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup, dominated at home versus Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Pakistan and won the Ashes 2021/22 and last year's T20 World Cup, in the UAE.

However, he stepped down as the head coach in February 2022 after reports started flowing in that his leadership style was 'too intense' for the national players (especially the younger brigade). Recently, the former opener opined on the criticism and said that he will 'never ever apologise' for his methods as a coach.

"It's really ironic, well not ironic, but it's the way of the world, I guess. On finishing with the Australian team, there was a talk I was too serious, too intense for some of the younger players. But that's what I learned. There's a famous incident where in the last Test (against India in Brisbane, 2021) I told Marnus Labuschagne not to walk out with a toasted ham and cheese sandwich in his hand, and it became headlines," Langer told Kim Beazley, Governor of Western Australia, in an interview.

Langer further went onto add that he would not have reached the place he is in today had he not been coached in the similar manner by his predecessors.

"You imagine Allan Border or Steve Waugh letting us ... it would not happen because we were walking out to battle and representing our country. It was how we were brought up and I wouldn't be here now if I hadn't have been brought up like that. It was an awesome grounding with great leadership and mentors," added Langer, who represented the Baggy Greens in 106 Tests.

Langer has now been succeeded by Andrew McDonald as the Aussie head coach whereas Pat Cummins and Aaron Finch continue to lead Australia in Tests and limited-overs, respectively.

Former Australia captain Tim Paine`s playing career may be over, with the wicketkeeper omitted from Tasmania`s list of contracted players. Paine, 37, stepped down as Test skipper in the leadup to the home Ashes series after a `sexting` scandal and took an indefinite "mental health break" from the game.
A Cricket Tasmania spokesperson said on Thursday Paine was not given a contract by his home state because he was still on mental health leave from the national governing body Cricket Australia.

Paine was accused by a former Cricket Tasmania receptionist of sending sexually explicit messages to her four years ago but the cricketer said they were consensual. He was cleared by an internal investigation in 2018 which was not revealed to the public until late last year.

Cricket Australia continues to monitor the situation in Sri Lanka but has no plans to change the schedule of the upcoming tour of the island state despite continued violence, the governing body said on Thursday.
Nine people have died and more than 300 have been injured this week in violent street protests against the government of the Indian Ocean nation, which is battling the worst economic crisis in its history.

Australia`s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) updated its travel advice on Sri Lanka on Wednesday, instructing potential visitors to reconsider their need to travel because of the security situation.
"We are keeping a close eye on developments in Sri Lanka and talking regularly with DFAT and Sri Lanka Cricket," Cricket Australia said on Thursday.

"Our players and support staff have been briefed and will continue to be kept up to date. There are three weeks until the scheduled departure of the squad and at this stage there are no changes to the schedule."
DFAT has also been advising potential visitors to Pakistan to reconsider their need to travel since March, in that case because of "the volatile security situation and high threat of terrorist attack, kidnapping and violence".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended good wishes to Team Australia, who will be playing in the final of the ongoing ICC Women's ODI World Cup.

PM Modi's statement came during the signing of a massive historic trade deal with Australia aiming to boost economic ties between the two countries.

"I would like to congratulate and wish all the best to Australia's women's team, who will be playing the final of ICC Women's ODI World Cup tomorrow," PM Modi said.

Despite having won 10 of the previous 11 World Cups between them, England and Australia will face off in an ICC Women's Cricket World Cup final for the first time in 34 years.

The two sides started their campaigns together almost a month ago in Hamilton and will end them together, one holding the trophy, the other looking on.

Australia have lost only one World Cup final but it was not too far away from the setting for Sunday's finale.

Back in 2000, just down the road from Christchurch at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln, Australia lost the closest final the tournament has ever seen, defeated by New Zealand by just four runs.

That year, England recorded their worst-ever World Cup finish of fifth before fighting back to take the trophy from Australia in 2009.

In doing so, they would go on to have a remarkable year also claiming their first, and only, T20 World Cup as well as an Ashes victory.

It is something that Australia are hoping to match 13 years later, they already hold the T20 trophy having secured that on home soil in 2020 before the Ashes were wrapped up with two games to spare in February, but the one-day World Cup evades them.

Vice-captain Rachael Haynes already has a winner's medal from 2013, and she is well on her way to a competition record, the opening batter sits on 429 runs for the tournament, 27 behind Debbie Hockley of New Zealand's all-time best set in 1997.

Australia to tour Sri Lanka for all-format series in June, July

Pakistan was 268 all out against the persistent pace of Australia captain Pat Cummins and impeccable reverse swing of Mitchell Starc to concede a massive 123-run lead on Wednesday in the third and final test.

In a sensational collapse after tea on Day 3, Pakistan lost seven wickets for 41 runs (the last four wickets without adding a run) as Cummins finished with 5-56 and Starc took 4-36.

Australia had stretched its lead to 134 runs by reaching 11-0 by stumps with Usman Khawaja not out on 7 and David Warner unbeaten on 4.

In-form opening batter Abdullah Shafique (81) and veteran Azhar Ali (78) had carried Pakistan to 170-1 and denied Australia a breakthrough in the first session after resuming on 90-1 before the visitors took control of the series-deciding test.

Nathan Lyon (1-95), who dried up the runs with his marathon spell of 30 overs on Day 3, provided the opening when he found the outside edge of Shafique's bat after lunch to end a patient 150-run stand.

Shafique's prolific run in the series has seen the opening batter score his maiden test hundred in the drawn first test in Rawalpindi before his patient 96 in Karachi led Pakistan to force a draw.

Shafique defied Australia with yet another patient knock off 228 balls which featured 11 fours before Lyon struck in the fifth over after lunch and successfully overturned umpire Aleem Dar's not out decision through a television referral.

With the second new ball only seven overs old, Cummins took a spectacular return catch to dismiss Azhar in his homecoming test match as Pakistan was restricted at 227-3 at tea.

Azhar, playing in his 94th test match but for the first time in his hometown of Lahore, became the fifth Pakistani batter to complete 7,000 test runs when he reached 74 by sweeping hard at Lyon to deep square leg for a single.

Former test captains Younis Khan (10,099), Javed Miandad (8,832), Inzamam-ul-Haq (8,829) and Mohammad Yousuf (7,530) are the other Pakistan batters to score more than 7,000 test runs.

But Pakistan folded against Cummins and Starc after tea, losing the last six wickets off 40 balls.

Starc, who bowled only two overs with the second new ball, returned in the last session and knocked back the off stumps of Fawad Alam (13) and Mohammad Rizwan (1) with Pakistan batters struggling to cope with the reverse swing.

Pakistan's long tail didn't last long with captain Babar Azam making a 67 off 131 balls. The home team had dropped all-rounder Faheem Ashraf to go with an extra fast bowler after drawing the first two test matches.

Cummins hurried the collapse by claiming the wickets of Sajid Khan, Nauman Ali and Hasan Ali within two overs to register his first five-wicket haul against Pakistan in a test match.

Starc wrapped up Pakistan's innings by trapping Babar leg before wicket off a delivery which shaped into the skipper and then clean bowled No. 11 batter Naseem Shah off a searing full pitched delivery.

Cummins, Starc put Australia in prime position after Pakistan's batting collapse on Day 3 of 3rd Test

Pakistan and Australia head into a winner-take-all third and final test from Monday as test cricket returns to Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium for the first time since the 2009 attack by gunmen on a bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team.

Top teams have largely shunned Pakistan since the attack that killed six policemen and two civilians with Australia visiting the country for the first time in 24 years.

The test will also be a first for Pakistan captain Babar Azam in his home city.

"It's a different feeling to play in front of a home crowd, at my home ground. I can't explain this feeling," Babar told reporters on Sunday, adding that it will be a proud moment for the country and his team if they can win the series.

While Australia named an unchanged side from the one that failed to clinch a win in Karachi, Pakistan will take a call after taking a final look at the wicket.

Babar's epic 196 and Mohammad Rizwan's gallant century helped the hosts snatch draw from the jaws of defeat in the second test in Karachi after the opening match also ended in a stalemate in Rawalpindi.

"We took a lot of confidence from the way the team played the last test," Babar said.

"We will take that confidence into the final test and we will be playing to win, that will be our mindset."

With batters dominating the series so far, the Pakistan Cricket Board hired Toby Lumsden, the former curator of the International Cricket Council academy, to oversee the preparations of the pitch for Lahore.

Both Babar and his Australian counterpart Pat Cummins said they did not expect the Gaddafi Stadium pitch to be much different from the first two tests.

"There's not a lot of grass on it," Cummins said. "I think it's had quite a lot of traffic throughout the PSL (Pakistan Super League) on it as well.

"It seems hard, but I can't see it being too much different from the other ones."

Pakistan vs Australia: Both teams look for series win as Test cricket returns to Lahore

Meg Lanning, Alyssa Healy starred for Australia in their thrilling six wickets win against India in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2022 here in Auckland on Saturday.

By chasing the target of 288 at the Eden Park, Australia smashed their own record of the highest successful chase in a Women's World Cup game.

The previous highest successful chase in a World Cup game was Australia's 258, against Sri Lanka in 2017.

Australia who are currently unbeaten in the World Cup 2022 have now qualified for the semi-final with 5 wins.

Meg Lanning played a brilliant knock of 97 while opener Alyssa Healy laid the foundation for Australian victory with a quick 72.

The other Aussie opener Rachael Haynes contributed with a crucial 43 while Beth Mooney and Ellyse Perry played innings of 30* and 28 respectively.

Chasing 278, Alyssa Healy set the tone from the get-go, smashing five boundaries in the first five overs to get Australia off to a flying start.

Rachael Haynes, who was mostly a silent spectator in the early exchanges, wasn't to be left far behind as she too got in on the act, finishing the Powerplay at a run-a-ball 25.

Australia looked in command throughout, and apart from a couple of run-out opportunities, didn't really offer India any chances on the field.

The opening pair soon brought up the second 100-run opening stand in this edition of the World Cup - the first one being the partnership between Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews, which also came against India.

India finally broke through in the 20th over with the wicket of Healy. The reverse-sweep off Sneh Rana went straight into the hands of Mithali Raj at third, thus breaking the 121-run stand.

One wicket brought two as Vastrakar's well-directed short-ball hurried Raynes, edging the ball to the gloves of Richa Ghosh. At the halfway stage, Australia were 142/2 with Meg Lanning and Ellyse Perry at the crease.

India's hope to get back in the game were short-lived as Lanning and Perry dropped the anchor with runs kept coming at ease for the Aussie duo.

After 40 overs in the innings, the rain interrupted the play for a bit which helped India as after the resumption, Perry fell for 28 off Pooja Vastrakar.

Beth Mooney joined Lanning on the crease and made sure Australia don't lose their composure going into the death overs.

Chase became tricky when Lanning fell 3 runs short of her century in the penultimate over but Beth Mooney with ice in her veins called the game off for Australia in the last over.

Earlier, fighting knocks from Mithali Raj, Yastika Bhatia accompanied by Harmanpreet Kaur's late flourish helped India to reach the score of 277/7 in the assigned 50 overs.

Indian skipper Mithali Raj played a gritty inning of 68 while Yastika Bhatia scored 59 at the Eden Park.

Harmanpreet Kaur's 57* and Pooja Vastrakar's 34 aided the Women in Blue to finish on high.

Teenager Darcie Brown scalped three wickets while Alana King picked two for Australia.

Brief Scores: India 277/7 (Mithali Raj 68, Yastika Bhatia 59; Darcie Brown 3-30) vs Australia 280/4 (Meg Lanning 97, Alyssa Healy 72; Pooja Vastrakar 2/43).

Women's World Cup 2022: Lanning, Healy shine as clinical Australia beat inconsistent India by 6 wickets

Uncapped players Mohammad Haris and Asif Afridi on Thursday earned call-ups for Pakistan's white-ball series, comprising three ODIs and one-off T20I against Australia.

Left-arm spinner Asif and wicketkeeper-batter Haris have earned the selectors' nod to the squads led by Babar Azam as result of their impressive performances in the domestic circuit.

"I want to congratulate Asif and Haris on their inclusions in squads for the Australia series. This is a reward for their hard work and consistent performances in the domestic circuit. Their selections are also a message for all domestic players that their performances are being followed and whenever an opportunity arises, they will be rewarded with a national team call-up," said Muhammad Wasim, Chair of the Selection Committee.

In the recently concluded seventh edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL), Asif took eight wickets in five matches for Multan Sultans, while 20-year-old Haris scored 166 runs in five matches at an impressive strike-rate of 186.5 for Peshawar Zalmi.

In the ongoing Pakistan Cup, Haris has already scored 219 runs in seven matches at an average of just under 44 for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while Asif has picked up eight wickets in seven matches for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with an economy-rate of 4.39.

Haris was named in the Pakistan squad for the home series against New Zealand but the series couldn't be played at the time as the Kiwis returned home on the day of the series opener.

"Australia are an equally outstanding team in the shorter formats of the game and, as such, we have decided to go with the best available and most experienced players. The four white-ball matches have significant context as the 50-over games count towards the 2023 World Cup qualification and the 20-over will be a repeat of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 semi-final. So, a lot to look-out for when the two sides will compete in coloured kits," added Wasim.

Left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz, who didn't feature in the ongoing Benaud-Qadir Trophy due to a foot injury, has been drafted in the side for both the ODI and T20I formats. However, his selection in the playing line-up will be subject to fitness test.

While a 20-member squad has been picked for the three-match ODI series that comes under the ODI Super League, the selectors have omitted Abdullah Shafique, Imam-Ul-Haq and Saud Shakeel from the group for the lone T20I.

The white-ball players will assemble in Lahore on March 22 and will undergo a three-day room isolation following which they will join the national side. Australia are ranked third in ODIs apart from being reigning men's T20 World Cup champions.

Mohammad Haris, Afridi earn maiden call-ups as Pakistan announce squads for limited-overs leg vs AUS

Babar Azam's glorious unbeaten 102 kept Pakistan alive but Australia remained on course for victory in the second test in Karachi on Tuesday.

Set a record victory target of 506, Pakistan lost two quick wickets but Babar would not go down without a fight.

The right-hander combined with opener Abdullah Shafique in a 171-run unbroken partnership for the third wicket in a spectacular rearguard spread over nearly 60 overs.

Pakistan finished day four on 192-2, still 314 behind their target and needing something extraordinary on Wednesday to deny Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-test series.

Babar's sixth test century contained 12 fours.

Abdullah was batting on 71, which included four fours and a six.

Earlier, Australia batted for 25 minutes on Tuesday before declaring their second innings on 97-2, challenging Pakistan to pull off the greatest fourth-innings chase in test cricket history.

Marnus Labuschagne fell for 44, while his Islamabad-born teammate Usman Khawaja followed his first-innings 160 with an unbeaten 44.

CUMMINS STRIKES

After four maiden overs of pace bowling against Pakistan, Australia captain Pat Cummins unleashed spin from both ends and was rewarded almost immediately.

Nathan Lyon caught opener Imam-ul-Haq (one) plumb in front of the wicket for one in his first over.

Cummins introduced Cameron Green after lunch and the all-rounder responded by ending Azhar Ali`s 54-ball stay with his second delivery.

Azhar (six) ducked under a short delivery that never rose and was given lbw even though replays suggested the ball had brushed his glove before hitting him.

CUMMINS STRIKES After four maiden overs of pace bowling against Pakistan, Australia captain Pat Cummins unleashed spin from both ends and was rewarded almost immediately. The hosts were spared the ignominy of a follow-on but Australia's overall lead bulged to 489 as the touring side finished day three on 81-1.

Pakistan in trouble as Australia stretch lead to 489 on Day 3 of 2nd Test in Karachi

Usman Khawaja's marathon 160 and Alex Carey's career-best 93 helped Australia rack up 505 for eight against Pakistan on day two of the second test on Sunday.

It was a day of painstaking accumulation at the National Stadium where the Pakistan bowlers kept the run rate under check but only five wickets fell in three sessions for all their hard work under a harsh sun.

Mitchell Starc saw off 95 deliveries for his dour unbeaten 28 and Australia captain Pat Cummins was unbeaten on nought at the close.

"Tomorrow we'll see what the skipper does but it's great to have 500 runs on the board," Carey said.

Earlier, after Australia resumed on 251-3, Shaheen Afridi subjected Nathan Lyon to a bouncer barrage but the nightwatchman did not flinch and went on the attack with the pull shot.

Lyon hit five fours in an entertaining 38 before he had his stumps rearranged by an express delivery from Faheem Ashraf, ending a 54-run stand with Khawaja.

Khawaja had shelved the reverse sweep on Saturday but Pakistan were convinced they had him caught in the slips when the opener attempted the shot against Nauman Ali.

However, replays ruled out any ball-bat contact and Pakistan lost a review.

Khawaja duly brought up his 150 but could not better his highest score of 174 as Sajid Khan dealt a double blow.

The off-spinner trapped Travis Head lbw for 23 and spun one past Khawaja's bat to hit the off-stump.

Islamabad-born Khawaja`s third century in four tests included 15 fours and a six.

Cameron Green, who was not even born when Australia last toured Pakistan in 1998, made 28 before Nauman confounded him with a sharp-turning ball that pitched outside leg stump and hit the off.

Carey swept well and Starc batted resolutely to frustrate Pakistan and take Australia past the 500-mark.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam brought himself on to bowl, partly to give respite to his overworked spinners, and struck in his first over.

In his haste to reach the 100 mark before close of play, Carey went for a slog sweep but lost his stump to a delivery from part-time spinner Babar that kept low.

Imam-ul-Haq smashed his second hundred in the run-fest in Rawalpindi but Australia's first test in Pakistan in 24 years ended in a dull draw on Tuesday.

Opting to bat on run-filled surface, Pakistan had made 476-4 before declaring their first innings at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

By the time they bowled out Australia for 459 on the final day, the chances of any team winning the contest had evaporated.

Pakistan decided to bat on allowing Imam, who went into the match without a century in his previous 11 tests, to score his second hundred of the contest.

The bespectacled left-hander's unbeaten 111 included seven boundaries and two sixes. Imam went on to win the man-of-the-match award.

His opening partner Abdullah Shafique, who made 136 not out, also brought up his maiden test century as Pakistan posted 252 for no loss in their second innings before the teams shook hands and left.

A total of 1,187 runs were scored over five days and only 14 wickets fell in what Australia's Steve Smith called a "pretty benign, dead wicket" which risks censure from the game's governing body.

With draw looming as the only possible result, Australia captain Pat Cummins shielded his frontline quicks and used as many as nine bowlers in Pakistan's second innings.

Earlier, after the tourists began the final day on 449-7, Pakistan took 11 deliveries to claim the last three Australian wickets.

Nauman Ali dismissed Cummins for eight, and both Mitchell Starc and Lyon fell lbw as Australia finished 17 runs behind Pakistan's first innings total.

Each of Australia`s top four batsmen crossed the 50-mark but could not convert them into hundreds and the tourists lost their last six wickets for 52 runs.

Left-arm spinner Nauman claimed a career-best 6-107 on a flat track where bowlers struggled for success.

When Pakistan came out to bat for a second time in the match, Cummins saw no point in straining his pace attack on the unresponsive track.

Pakistan vs Australia, 1st Test: Rawalpindi run-fest ends in a dull draw

Beginning a tour of the sub-continent with a draw is a result perfectly acceptable to most visiting captains but Australia skipper Pat Cummins knows the task gets significantly tougher for his team in the second test against Pakistan on Saturday.

Australia's first test in Pakistan in 24 years turned out to be a run-feast in Rawalpindi where 1,187 runs were scored and only 14 wickets fell, earning a "below average" rating from the match referee.

After five dull days of bat dominating ball, things are likely to spice up on a dry track at Karachi's National Stadium where spin and reverse swing should ensure runs are not taken for granted.

Australia have responded by harnessing debutant Mitchell Swepson with Nathan Lyon in a two-man spin attack, sacrificing the pace of Josh Hazlewood and endorsing Mitchell Starc's reverse swing skills.

"The wicket here looks a little bit drier. Historically, it's bit friendlier for the spinners," Cummins told a news conference on Friday.

"We think particularly a wrist-spinner of Swepo's quality gives us a balance, give us the best opportunity to take 20 wickets."

Australia's top four got 50s in Rawalpindi but none could convert them into hundreds.

On a Karachi track that is expected to break up early, Steve Smith and David Warner created rough patches before facing bowlers in the nets to prepare for Pakistan's full-strength attack.

The hosts have welcomed back quick Hasan Ali and seam-bowling all-rounder Faheem Ashraf, who missed the Rawalpindi test with injuries.

"We have more or less finalised the playing XI," Pakistan captain Babar Azam told a news conference.

Australia would be open to hosting Asian arch-rivals Pakistan and India in a series to revive a contest world cricket wants to see, board chief Nick Hockley said.

Pakistan and India's rivalry has been confined to events sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asia Cup for the best part of a decade due to the strained relations between them.

They last played a bilateral series when India hosted Pakistan for white-ball matches at the end of 2012.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja in January proposed an annual four-nation T20 series involving Pakistan, India, Australia and England to be hosted on a rotational basis by the teams.

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Hockley said his board had not discussed the proposal but would be open to hosting Pakistan and India in a tri-series.

"Personally, I really like the tri-series concept. It's worked well in the past," he told reporters in Rawalpindi, where Australia and Pakistan drew the first test in their three-match series.

"We'd be very open to hosting ... matches,"

"There are really big communities of both India and Pakistan living in Australia.

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has condoled the demise of Shane Warne, saying the Australian brought spin as an attacking commodity to this cricketing world.

Warne passed away on Friday aged 52 due to a suspected heart attack.

"I see Warne as a flag-bearer for carrying the spin aspect of bowling on the front in the world cricketing map. The top three wicket-takers in the world are spinners in Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne and Anil Kumble. He was an interesting character. So many Australian legends had so many nice things to say about him. I still can't accept the fact that life is so fickle. We cannot predict what can happen," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

'Amazing guy, amazing life': Shane Warne's family expresses pain, pay tribute to cricketing great

On Friday evening (March 04), the cricketing world became poorer with the loss of Shane Warne. The former leg spinner passed away following a suspected heart attack in Thailand. As per a brief statement given to Fox News by the ex-cricketer Warne's management, the statement said, "Shane was found unresponsive in his villa and despite the best efforts of medical staff, he could not be revived. The family requests privacy at this time and will provide further details in due course."

After Warne's shocking demise, the cricketing fraternity remains in a state of disbelief. The 52-year-old signed off from international cricket with a Test hat-trick, ODI World Cup medal (in 1999) and accounting for a total of 1,001 wickets at the highest level during his 15-year-long illustrious career for the Australian cricket team. During his international run, Warne played a lot alongside former Aussie captain Ricky Ponting.

Thus, Ponting was very close with Warne and recently broke down remembering his former teammate during a conversation with former English cricketer Isa Guha in the latest edition of The ICC Review.

India batting great Sunil Gavaskar has spoken at his shock at the death of Shane Warne but does not think the Australian tweaker was the greatest spinner of all time.

Speaking on a show on the India Today television channel, Gavaskar said Warne's death at the age of 52 on Friday due to a suspected heart attack in Koh Samui, Thailand had left him speechless.

Warne's death followed that of fellow Australian great, wicketkeeper Rod Marsh, at the age of 74.

"Within the space of 24 hours the cricket world has lost two giants of the game, not just Australian cricket but the cricket world. Rodney Marsh and then Shane Warne. This is unbelievable. Hard to come to grips with," Gavaskar said.

"Warne mastered a craft which is so difficult... wrist spin. To pick 700-plus wickets like he did in test cricket, hundreds more in one-day cricket tells you how good a bowler he was."

"Finger spin is a lot easier, you have more control over what you want to bowl but leg spin or wrist spin is tough. For him to have bowled the way he did, the way he seemed to create magic... at will was the reason he was revered all over the cricketing world."

Gavaskar said he did not consider Warne, who took 708 test wickets to sit behind Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan (800) in the overall list, as the greatest spinner of all time.

"For me, the Indian spinners and Muralitharan were certainly better than Warne. Because look at Warne's record against India. It was pretty ordinary against India," Gavaskar said.

"Because he didn't have much success against Indian players, who are very good players of spin bowling, I don't think I would call him the greatest. Muralitharan with the success that he had against India would rank over him in my book."

The timing of Gavaskar's comments upset some of Warne's legion of Indian fans, particularly his suggestion that the Australian`s lifestyle had contributed to his early death.

Australia's tour of Pakistan should encourage major cricket nations to shed their apprehensions and visit the South Asian country, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said on Friday.

Top teams have largely steered clear of Pakistan since 2009, when a visiting Sri Lanka team was ambushed by gunmen in Lahore, in an attack blamed on Islamist militants.

The PCB spent much of the last decade trying to convince teams to visit Pakistan but suffered a setback when New Zealand and England abandoned their tours last year.

The PCB heaved a massive sigh of relief on Friday when Australia's first tour of Pakistan in 24 years got underway in Rawalpindi.

"I've seen over the last four or five years the efforts the PCB and various authorities in Pakistan have made to bring elite cricket back to Pakistan and this is another step in that journey," Allardice said.

"It's a building block in terms of building that confidence for teams to come back and tour Pakistan."

Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) chief executive Todd Greenberg said Australian cricketers were "unbelievably excited".

"A lot of players were very anxious about this tour some months ago, but that anxiety has turned to real excitement," Greenberg said.
