New Delhi, India
The India-Australia Test series is currently poised at 1-1 after the first three Tests. A lot of drama has taken place off the field before the next encounter at the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), i.e. the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Virat Kohli confronted an Australian journalist after the reporter filmed a video of his family, without permission, irking the star batter. After a few days, Ravindra Jadeja was accused by the Australian media for not entertaining questions in English after a net session at the MCG, Melbourne.
Speaking about Kohli and Jadeja's sour moments with the media, in the lead-up to the Boxing Day Test, former Australia batter Simon Katich feels it is all 'mind games', due to the 'enormity of the series'.
Katich said on Channel 7, "Obviously, there’s been a few things unfolding in the last week or so, that haven’t gone down well at that camp. It’s probably just the mind games being played, given the enormity of this series. "The media are here to promote the game and I don’t know what the Indians are thinking at the moment. That’s their problem,” he added.

Talking about Kohli's confrontation with the media, the former Indian captain argued with the media after a video of his family was captured, without permission, at the Melbourne airport. To this, he was caught saying on the camera, "With my kids, I need some privacy. You can't film without asking me."
On the other hand, Jadeja took a few questions from the Indian reporters post a net session in Melbourne before rushing to catch the team bus. Just then, an Australian reporter argued with the Indian team media manager, saying, "Can't we take one question in English?" While the manager replied saying, "This was organised mainly for the travelling Indian media." The reporter expressed his frustration, stating, "the organisation is hopeless."
The fourth and penultimate Test between India and Australia kicks off at the iconic MCG, Melbourne on Thursday (Dec 26).

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja says that retirement of veteran off-spinner Ravi Ashwin is a 'golden opportunity for a youngster.' Ashwin retired from international cricket after the end of the third Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Series, which was held at Gabba in Brisbane on Wednesday (Dec 18).
"We just hope that we get a better all-rounder and bowler than Ashwin. It's not like nobody can replace a player. Everyone goes, but you do get the replacement. We have to move on. In India, we always have good talents; it is not like anyone is irreplaceable. We will have to move on. It is a golden opportunity for any youngster to grab this opportunity," said Jadeja while talking to the reporters outside Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Saturday (Dec 21).

Jadeja also revealed that he came to know about Ashwin's retirement only five minutes before the press conference despite spending the whole day together.
"I got to know about the retirement at the last moment, five minutes before the press conference. It was shocking. We spent the whole day together, and he didn’t even give me a hint. I got to know at the last minute. We all know how Ashwin’s mind works," Jadeja said.
The left-arm spinner, however, acknowledged that he'll miss Ashwin and termed him as 'my on-field mentor.'
"I will miss all this. We have been playing together for so many years. We kept passing messages to each other on the field regarding the match situation, what the batters are trying to do," said Jadeja.
In an unexpected announcement, Ashwin retired as one of India's greats, having taken 537 Test wickets in addition to six 100s in the format.
His test bowling record is second only to Anil Kumble's 619.
Ashwin also took 765 wickets in all internationals, again second only to Kumble's 953.

Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh claimed that he is up for the challenge of facing India pacer Jasprit Bumrah, 'best bowler in the world', ahead of the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Brisbane, starting on Dec 14. Marsh believes the best way to tackle Bumrah is to apply pressure with your own method as he feels if one tries to see him off, then he is likely to be out by the wily speedster.

Speaking to the press before the third Test, Marsh said, "I think when you have the best bowler in the world and you are just trying to see him off he is going to have one with your name on it. I think it is about applying pressure with your own method and taking the challenge on. We know right now he’s probably the best bowler in the world. It’s just about getting up for that challenge. It’s a big series. You want to take the best in the world on. That is certainly my mentality. (I) look forward to facing him again."

Bumrah has been in top form in the ongoing series, leading the list of most wickets with 12 scalps after two Tests.

Notably, Marsh is the only top-order batter who hasn't been dismissed by Bumrah in the series so far. Marsh in this regard jokingly said, "He’s coming Everyone has their own plans and we all bat differently so (it’s about) the situation in the game.

"Sometimes you have to get through a spell and sometimes it is time to attack. We have guys in our batting lineup who just play differently. Getting through your own way and moving the game forward is really important when you are facing one of the best attacks in the world," he added.

The 2024/25 BGT edition is currently tied at 1-1 with India winning the series opener, in Perth, by 295 runs before Pat Cummins-led Australia came back strongly with a ten-wicket win in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide last week.

Taijul Islam snared five wickets for the 15th time in a Test innings to lead Bangladesh to a series-levelling 101-run victory over the West Indies on the fourth evening of the second and final Test at Sabina Park on Tuesday. After Jaker Ali's Test-best innings of 91 lifted the tourists to 268 all out in their second innings and left the home team with a daunting victory target of 287, left-arm spinner Islam broke the back of the Caribbean side's effort with five for 50 as they were dismissed for 185 in the day's final session. Fast bowler Nahid Rana, whose maiden five-wicket haul in the first innings pulled Bangladesh back into contention, had the satisfaction of administering the final rites when he yorked last man Shamar Joseph for his only wicket of the innings.

"It's a great feeling to win a Test match abroad which we don't often do and all the boys really put in a tremendous effort," said player-of-the-match Islam. Seamers Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud took two wickets each with Taskin emerging as the leading wicket-taker in the brief series with 11 victims to his name.

Kavem Hodge top-scored for the West Indies with 55, while captain Kraigg Brathwaite played with unusual adventure at the top of the order in contributing 43 off 63 deliveries.

But they lost wickets at regular intervals and eventually succumbed in just 50 overs as Bangladesh swiftly avenged the 201-run mauling they endured in the first Test in Antigua a week earlier. "We wanted to be positive and I thought we started well but obviously we couldn't carry it through to the end of the day," said a rueful Brathwaite.

This was Bangladesh's first Test victory in the West Indies since their 2-0 sweep over a depleted Caribbean side in 2009. Earlier Ali's belligerent innings, which occupied 106 deliveries and was embellished by eight fours and five sixes, tilted the balance heavily in favour of Bangladesh as the highest successful run-chase in a Test at Sabina Park was the 212 achieved by the West Indies over Sri Lanka in 2003.

Such was the extent of the 26-year-old right-hander's dominance of the morning that he contributed 62 of the 75 runs added by the tourists after resuming at the overnight position of 193-5.

Alzarri Joseph and Kemar Roach took three wickets each for the West Indies, Joseph ending Ali's quest for a maiden Test hundred when he was last out, caught at deep midwicket a half-hour before lunch.

2nd Test: Taijul Islam spins Bangladesh to series-levelling win vs West Indies

A "baggy green" Test cap worn by Australian great Don Bradman sold for $250,000 at auction on Tuesday as collectors vied to own a rare piece of cricketing history. The tattered garment -- almost 80 years old -- was sun-faded, showed signs of "insect damage" and had a torn peak. Auction house Bonhams said Bradman wore the cap during India's 1947-48 tour of Australia, his last Test series on home soil.

In an auction lasting 10 minutes, a flurry of bidding pushed the price from a starting point of $160,000 to a winning offer of $250,000 (Aus$390,000). The total cost was $310,000 once "buyer's premium" fees were tacked on.

Bonhams said it was "the only known baggy green" worn by Bradman during the series, in which he scored 715 runs in six innings at an average of 178.75, with three centuries and a double-hundred. Australia's cricketers are awarded the dark green woollen caps before Test debuts and they are revered by players and fans alike, often the more battered the better.

The commotion regarding the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 refuses to die down. With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) clearly stating that they won't send Team India to Pakistan, the hosts for next year's mega event, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was offered to accept a hybrid model.

PCB has shown willingness to accept the proposal. In a recent ICC meeting, they have urged the governing body to follow the same model when the upcoming ICC events will be held in India. India is set to host the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup, and 2026 T20 World Cup (along with Sri Lanka).

As per a report in ESPNcricinfo, it is understood that the PCB has put forward the proposal over the weekend in meetings with the ICC and BCCI in Dubai.

They have urged for an equitable and long-term agreement -- going beyond the Champions Trophy -- with similar provisions for Pakistan to play outside of India during ICC events held there. However, it is unclear whether such provisions are aimed for the next three years or until the end of the current rights cycle, in 2031.

As of now, there has been no response from the BCCI but indications are that the Indian cricket board is not willing to accept adopting a hybrid model for their tournaments, citing no security issues in India.

In either case, the ICC Board will examine the PCB proposal before making a final call for next year's Champions Trophy (also regarded as the mini World Cup). After the final decision is out, both PCB and BCCI will have it ratified by their governments. The next ICC meeting on this matter is tentatively scheduled for Thursday (Dec 5), with a final decision set to be out soon.

Earlier, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi had told reporters on Sunday (Dec 1) in Dubai, "We will do whatever's best for cricket. If we adopt any other formula [except hosting the tournament in Pakistan], it will be done on the basis of equality. The most important thing for Pakistan is its respect; everything else is secondary."

"A one-sided arrangement is no longer acceptable. It cannot be the case that we continue to go to India, but they do not visit Pakistan. Whatever happens must be on the basis of equality," he added.

The last edition of the Champions Trophy was held in 2017, in England and Wales, with Pakistan winning the coveted title for the first time.

Champions Trophy 2025: PCB open to hybrid model, urges same for events in India

Nahid Rana's first Test five-wicket haul nudged Bangladesh ahead of the West Indies before the tourists' usually suspect batting line-up displayed a measure of resilience to claim the upper hand on the third day of the second and final Test at Sabina Park. Rana led the rout of the home side's first innings for 146 on Monday with impressive figures of five for 61, giving the visitors a lead of 18 runs.

Buoyed by that effort, the Bangladesh top-order batting then displayed the sort of shot-making confidence previously unseen in this brief series to reach stumps at 193 for five in the second innings, a lead of 211 with five wickets in hand.

Given that the highest successful run-chase in a Test match at Sabina Park is just 211, achieved by the West Indies against Sri Lanka in 2003, history would appear to be on the side of the tourists forcing a series-levelling victory over the final two days.

Starting the day at 70 for one, West Indies were swiftly undermined by the 22-year-old Rana, who added four more victims to the dismissal of Mikyle Louis the previous evening.

Rana was well supported by fellow seamer Hasan Mahmud (2 for 19). Keacy Carty top-scored with 40 while captain Kraigg Brathwaite, the first wicket of the day when he was caught in the gully off Rana, contributed 39.

WI vs Ban, 2nd Test: Bangladesh on top after Nahid Rana's 5 for 61 vs West Indies on Day 3

Prithvi Shaw, with a base price of INR 7.5 million (75 lakhs), went unsold in the recently held IPL 2025 mega auction in Saudi Arabia. The right-hander led India to a memorable U19 World Cup win in 2018 and was soon picked by the Delhi Daredevils (DD), now known as the Delhi Capitals (DC). He could, however, never cement his spot due to fitness and inconsistency. For India, Shaw made his debut in 2018, where he scored a hundred in his maiden Test, and last played in mid-2021. He has also been involved in many controversies, on and off the field, and faced a doping ban in 2020. Seeing Shaw's decline, post IPL 2025 auction, his childhood coach admitted that 'everything but his game rose'.

"He is just 25 years old. He still has age in his hand. He can bounce back with hard work if he wants to sustain in competitive cricket," Shaw's coach Santosh Pingutkar told ETV Bharat.

A fearless Harry Brook slammed an unbeaten century to give England the upper hand in the first Test against an error-strewn New Zealand on day two in Christchurch on Friday. At stumps Brook was 132 not out with the visitors recovering from 71-4 to be 319-5, trailing the hosts by 29 runs and with five wickets in hand. Captain Ben Stokes was unbeaten on 37 after being dropped by Tom Latham on 30 -- New Zealand's sixth dropped catch and the third by their skipper. After England's woeful start the 25-year-old Brook, in partnership with Ollie Pope, went on the attack.

Aided by luck from poor fielding and several edges sailing just wide or over slips, the pair belted 151 off 171 deliveries for the fifth wicket. Brook was dropped four times -- on 18, 41, 70 and 106 -- with the last detected by television replays after the umpire ruled the ball spilled by wicketkeeper Tom Blundell was byes.

NZ vs Eng, 1st Test: Harry Brook's 132 puts England ahead vs New Zealand after end of Day 2

Former Australian captain Allan Border criticised Pat Cummins-led hosts for letting Virat Kohli 'roll onto a hundred without much resistance' during India's second innings of the Perth Test, which they won by 295 runs. Ahead of the second Test at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, Border slammed Australia's tactics in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) opener, in Perth, and stated he doesn't want to see a confident Kohli as it would be alarming signs for the hosts.

Talking on SEN radio, Border said, "I was really disappointed in the way we let Kohli roll on to a hundred without much resistance. We don't want this guy full of confidence for the rest of the series.

Meanwhile, former Aussie opener Matthew Hayden had also stated on Channel 7, after India's Perth Test win, "They missed a few tricks with Virat Kohli in the early part of his innings. Nathan Lyon had a mid-on back, one on the off-side catching and a mid-wicket. I felt like it was so easy for him to get off strike." He further opined, "You can't cut a sucker an even break when a bloke is under pressure as he was. The field we finished with - two slips, no point, a man straight - it offered up the outside edge of his bat as well. He found it a little more frustrating. When he got the bit between the teeth, it was too late."

India bundled out for a paltry 150 on the opening day of the 2024/25 BGT edition, after opting to bat first. However, they stormed back into the match by dismissing Australia for 104, with stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah taking 5 for 30. From thereon, it was a one-way traffic as India rode on Yashasvi Jaiswal's 161, Kohli's 100* and KL Rahul's 77 to declare at 487-6, giving a massive 534-run target. Eventually, the home side bundled out for 238 to lose convincingly.

Hayden also slammed the home bowling unit for not testing Jaiswal enough with the short-pitched deliveries. He added, "Jaiswal looked vulnerable against it. They were shell-shocked from the average batting performance (in the first innings) and as we see now, again, bombs are going."

India have a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series in the ongoing BGT edition Down Under. The second Test kicks off on Dec 6 in Adelaide, i.e. a pink-ball contest. Australia would hope to find ways to keep Kohli at bay, who returned to form and slammed his third Test ton since 2020 (seventh in Australia).

NZ vs Eng, 1st Test: Glenn Phillips takes a SCREAMER at gully to get rid of Ollie Pope on Day 2 - Watch

Kane Williamson made an impressive return from a groin injury as he struck a solid 93 on Day 1 of the first Test between New Zealand and England, at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Thursday (Nov 28). The right-hander never looked out of sorts despite a lengthy injury layoff but missed out on a deserving 32nd Test ton, being out for 93 with Gus Atkinson removing him. With this, Williamson got dismissed in the nervous nineties for the first time since 2018. Since the start of 2019, he has struck 13 tons in the format. This speaks volumes about the former NZ captain's knack for countering the nervous nineties, however, his record got broken on Day 1 of the two-match series opener versus England.

Speaking about the conditions, post end of Day 1, Williamson told the broadcasters, "It was challenging, we had to work hard, some good partnerships, but the wicket was pretty good. I was just trying to adjust as to where to run (on being asked about the slippery surface), we applied ourselves well, pretty balanced day with both teams getting some rewards. An interesting day's play overall. From our perspective, we were pleased with partnerships throughout, the ball was doing a bit and we felt we got some rewards towards the end of the day."

"The ball was doing a bit throughout, there was some sideways movement and bounce, (Brydon) Carse extracted it well, with the wind he made the ball do a bit. Was nervous (on his comeback), watched the series and the team did amazingly well there in India, it was a great achievement (to win 3-0)," he added.

Talking about the opening day's play, NZ ended at 319-8 thanks to Williamson's 93 and vital contributions from captain Tom Latham, Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips. The latter remains unbeaten on 47, along with ex-skipper Tim Southee (10*), and will like to take his side's total beyond the 350-run mark on Day 2.

Ivory Coast set a new record for the lowest total ever recorded in a T20 international when they were bowled out for just seven by Nigeria in Lagos on Sunday. It was three runs fewer than the previous record of 10, set by the Isle of Man when they lost to Spain in 2023 and equalled by Mongolia against Singapore in September. Nigeria won the toss and elected to bat first in the T20 World Cup sub-regional Africa qualifier, racking up an imposing 271-4 in their 20 overs. Selim Salau smashed 112 from 53 balls before retiring while Isaac Okpe's 65 not out from 23 balls included six sixes and three fours.

Ivory Coast opener Ouattara Mohamed made four before being the first man out. Little did he know that he would be Ivory Coast's top-scorer as the innings folded without even a boundary in just 7.3 overs. Only Mimi Alex, wicketkeeper Maiga Ibrahim and Dje Claude troubled the scorers with a single each.

Six of their batsmen were dismissed for ducks while Ladji Ezechiel remained unbeaten on nought. Nigeria won the match by a massive 264 runs which, perhaps surprisingly, is not a record as Zimbabwe beat Gambia by 290 runs in Nairobi last month.

The tournament forms part of the qualification process for the men's 2026 T20 World Cup.

Controversial KL Rahul Dismissal Sparks Outrage

Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024/25 edition, which gets underway in Perth on Nov 22 (Friday), Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood expressed his relief over Cheteshwar Pujara's absence in the India squad. Pujara last played for India during the WTC 2023 final at The Oval, London. Since then, he has been out of the India Test lineup due to his ordinary run. Pujara, however, was a beast in Australia during India's last two visits, hence, is absence has pleased Hazlewood.

Prior to the BGT 2024/25 opener, Hazlewood said at a press conference, "I am happy that Cheteshwar Pujara is not here. He is obviously someone who bats time and spends a lot of time at the crease and makes you earn his wicket every time. Has done really well in Australia on previous tours. I mean there are always first-class young players coming into the team. There is so much pressure to perform in the Indian team. With so many guys nipping at the hills all the time, so overall the playing XI is a mix of unbelievable players. So it does not really matter, they are all big players."

Pujara has an exceptional record in Australia. The right-hander, a veteran of 103 Tests, has scored 993 runs in 11 games against the Aussies, in Australia, at an average of 47.28. During India's maiden Test series triumph in Australia, in 2018/19, he ended with 521 runs at an average of 74.42 to be adjudged the Player of the Series. Even in the 2020/21 series win for India Down Under, he played an integral part with 273 runs, along with three fifties. Overall, he has five half-centuries and three centuries in Australia.

This time around, Shubman Gill is expected to do well for India at the No. 3 spot. He has succeeded Pujara at the slot since the veteran's ouster and done a good job so far. It will be interesting to see if he can replicate Pujara's feat Down Under. Ahead of the Perth Test, Gill is running against time to be fit following a thumb injury in the run-up to the BGT 2024/25 edition.

BGT 2024/25: 'Happy that Cheteshwar Pujara is not here,' Josh Hazlewood relieved by veteran batter's absence

The Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) musical chair with coaches continues with Aaqib Javed being the newest entrant in the fold. The PCB, on Monday (Nov. 18), announced Javed as the new interim white-ball coach. Javed will keep the position till Champions Trophy next year.

The development comes a day after PCB refuted a report by ESPNCricinfo that Javed will be replacing Test coach Jason Gillespie as Pakistan's all-format coach. Ever since Pakistan's white-ball coach Gary Kirsten quit last month after being six months into the job, Gillespie has been doing the additional duties.

"During this tenure, Aqib will continue to serve as a senior member of the men’s National Selection Committee, and will be assigned additional responsibilities following the conclusion of the eight-team tournament," read the statement by the board.

"Meanwhile, the PCB will initiate the recruitment process for a permanent white-ball head coach, aiming to complete the appointment by the end of the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled from 19 February to 9 March," it further added.

Pakistan cricket's drama around coaches began shortly after Pakistan's exit from the ODI World Cup 2023 last year when they failed to make it to the semi-finals.

Team director Mickey Arthur and coach Grant Bradburn were let go, and Mohammad Hafeez took over on the tour of Australia, where they lost miserably.

Then they went ahead with Kirsten as white-ball coach and Gillespie in the red-ball format. Kirsten, however, decided to put down the papers in October last month without coaching the team in a single ODI amid drama around the selection committee and captains.

Gillespie, on the other hand, stayed on the job and was given the charge of white-ball teams on an interim basis.

As for Javed, his rise has been fast in Pakistan cricket in the last few months. He was the apparent mastermind behind spin pitches in the last two Tests against England at home, which Pakistan won after losing the first Test. He was also named in the selection committee last month in an overhaul that didn't go well with the coaches.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been instructed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to abandon plans for a Champions Trophy tour in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The move follows concerns over the region's political sensitivity and international implications. As a result, the planned tour has been officially cancelled, marking a significant setback for the PCB’s ambitions to host the event in the disputed territory.

The third T20I between India and South Africa on Wednesday (Nov 13) in SuperSport Park, Centurion was stopped due to 'Flying Ants.' The delay, which occurred one over into the second innings, lasted nearly 30 minutes before the match could begin again.

Flying ants are commonly seen in South Africa during the humid weather, especially three to five days after the rain. The game was stopped as there was a threat of the insects getting into the players' eyes.

Earlier, South Africa won the toss and elected to field first. India had a horrible start again in the game as they lost first T20I's centurion Sanju Samson for a duck for the second time in three matches.

Debutant Ramandeep then announced his arrival in style as he hit the first ball he faced in international cricket for a six. Ramandeep was dismissed on the penultimate ball of the innings with India already having 218 runs on the board.

Tilak Varma finished unbeaten on 107 not out off just 56 balls - hitting eight fours and seven sixes during his maiden hundred. Tilak became the 12th player for India – the most for any team in T20Is. India finally finished with 219/6 in 20 overs.

Kohli debuted for India in 2008. Soon, he became a household name and was a regular in the side following the retirement of stalwarts such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, etc. Since then, he kept piling runs across formats and even led the national side from 2015 to early 2022. During his captaincy, India reached the No. 1 ranking in Tests, dominated at home and competed hard in the away series whereas also played the 2017 Champions Trophy final and reached the semifinals of the 2019 ODI World Cup.

During the 2023 ODI World Cup, Kohli amassed 765 runs -- most ever by any batter in a single edition. He also scored his 50th century in the format during the semifinals, the most by any in ODI cricket. In June 2024, he announced his retirement, along with Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja, from T20Is (as the second-highest run-getter) following India's T20 World Cup triumph in the West Indies and the USA.

At present, Kohli has 27,134 international runs with 80 centuries. While he is going through a bad phase, with only one fifty in six innings in the just-concluded home series versus New Zealand (where India got whitewashed), the 36-year-old will vow to bounce back strongly in the forthcoming Australia tour, starting on Nov 22. Kohli will also be India's key member in their upcoming campaign in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Kohli, who has already won both World Cups, is in the last phase of his illustrious career. He will surely like to step aside by also winning the WTC and CT titles.
