A recent study has revealed that 'superbugs' may be more dangerous than the novel coronavirus that took over the world in the beginning of this year.

Warning about the bug, Dr Paul De Barro, biosecurity research director at Australia’s national science agency, the CSIRO told local media, “If you thought Covid was bad, you don’t want anti-microbial resistance.”

“I don’t think I’m exaggerating to say it’s the biggest human health threat, bar none. Covid is not anywhere near the potential impact of AMR.”

AMR stands for antimicrobial resistance and can reportedly take humans "back into the dark ages of health.”

The warning has been sound by the Australian scientist, who has also said that while the world is at risk, the problem is acute in the Pacific region.

The drug-resistant bacteria can put the health system at far greater risk than imaginable in the Pacific region as there is very less official data available on this bacteria, and even lesser public knowledge.

“A challenge for Pacific island countries and territories is trying to curtail antimicrobial excess, without jeopardising antimicrobial access for those who need them,” the paper argued.

The study has come a month after the Fiji government announced that 10 people lost their lives to leptospirosis and more than a thousand are suffering from it — a bacterial infection that affects both animals and humans.

The scientists have also warned that unlike coronavirus, social distancing and wearing face masks cannot keep you safe from this disease as this bacteria exists in food, water, air and our everyday-use substances and resources.

Researchers have also warned the health experts that if this superbug is ignored any longer, it could cause more harm than coronvairus and take nearly 350 million lives till 2050.

Warning about the bug, Dr Paul De Barro, biosecurity research director at Australia’s national science agency, the CSIRO told local media, “If you thought Covid was bad, you don’t want anti-microbial resistance.” “I don’t think I’m exaggerating to say it’s the biggest human health threat, bar none. Covid is not anywhere near the potential impact of AMR.” Also read: China approves trials of nasal spray vaccine for coronavirus AMR stands for antimicrobial resistance and can reportedly take humans "back into the dark ages of health.” The warning has been sound by the Australian scientist, who has also said that while the world is at risk, the problem is acute in the Pacific region. × Researchers have also warned the health experts that if this superbug is ignored any longer, it could cause more harm than coronvairus and take nearly 350 million lives till 2050. “For instance, we’ve identified people who have a multi-drug-resistant form of tuberculosis and need newer, stronger medication for a longer period of time and those stronger antibiotics are more expensive,” said Dr Donald Wilson, associate dean at the Fiji National University’s College of Medicine.

Italy's Berlusconi 'stable' after coronavirus hospitalisation

France must stay vigilant as more people will be hospitalised in intensive care units in the next two weeks, reflecting a flare-up in COVID-19 infections in recent days, Health Minister Olivier Veran said on Saturday.

Veran however ruled out the need for a new nationwide lockdown, telling BFM television that France had other means to fight the virus, including testing.

"I cannot envision a general lockdown. The lockdown was a lid on an overflowing cooking pot," he said.

Health authorities on Friday reported 8,975 new confirmed cases, almost 1,500 higher than the previous daily peak of 7,578 on March 31, when France was in one of Europe`s strictest coronavirus lockdowns.

As the rise in infections has mainly affected young people, who are less likely to develop complications, there has so far been less strain on French hospitals, which were almost overwhelmed at the end of March.

France expects more severe COVID cases in next 15 days

A recent survey has revealed that three out of four people will be willing to take the vaccine for coronavirus, if it is rolled out this year.

On behalf of World Economic Forum, Ipsos MORI conducted a survey of nearly 20,000 adults from 27 countries.

As per the results compiled, around 74 per cent people said that they would get a vaccine for COVID-19 if it were available saying “if a vaccine for COVID-19 were available, I would get it”. However, 59 per cent people said they had no hope that the vaccination will be rolled out by the end of this year.

Out of people who said they would not want to get their hopes high for the vaccination, 56 per cent said they would be scared about the side effects of the vaccination, and 29 per cent said they are not sure if the vaccine will be effective.

Out of 74 per cent who agreed to use the vaccine, only 37 per cent strongly agree while 37 per cent somewhat agree.

A serosurvey conducted by the government authorities in between mid-July and early-August has indicated that one-fifth of Chennai’s population has been exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 infection.

SARS-CoV-2 is the virus that causes the disease COVID-19. The study which was conducted by the National Institute of Epeidemiology of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Greater Chennai Corporation was based on the analysis of blood samples from 12,405 individuals from all zones of the city.

Population-based serosurveys are performed to measure the spread of infection in the community. Such surveys are done by performing blood tests on individuals to check if they have developed antibodies to an infection. The preliminary finding of the report stated that, “around 80 per cent of the population is still susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection in Chennai”.

The methodology adopted for the survey involved collecting blood samples, at random, from individuals aged above 10, from the streets in the highly populated areas of the city. The field data collection is said to have happened between July 18 and 28, whereas the testing the collected samples was completed by August 06.

After collecting the blood samples from residents, the individuals were also required to answer questions on history of exposure to lab confirmed COVID-19 cases and any possible symptoms that they might have noticed. The tests were aimed at identifying the prevalence of Immunoglobin-G(IgG) antibodies. The survey data indicated that the mean age of those surveyed was 41 and that 2,673 individuals had evidence of past SARS-CoV with a seroprevalence of nearly 21 per cent.

It is notable that the survey reveals widely varying seroprevalence for areas across the city. Seroprevalence refers to the number/percentage of people that have shown signs of being exposed to the infection. The percentage was as low as 7 per cent in a particular zone and 44 per cent in another.

“We need to understand the reasons for varying seroprevalence across zones to improve our control measures” the study concluded. Civic body officials also stated that more people would have developed immunity too the infection, given that this survey was done in July and that there has been a consistent increase in cases since then.

As on Tuesday, Tamil Nadu has recorded a total of 4.33 lakh COVID-19 cases and 7418 deaths and since the outbreak of the infection, Chennai has seen the highest number of daily cases in the state. Almost 52,379 people are under treatment (active cases) and 3,74,172 have recovered.
