The death toll increased to 1,46,111 with 301 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 96,36,487 pushing the national recovery rate to 95.65 per cent, while the COVID-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.45 per cent.

The COVID-19 active caseload has fallen below 3 lakh.

There are 2,92,518 active coronavirus infections in the country which comprises 2.90 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.

India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16.

It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, &nbsp;90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.

According to the ICMR, 16,31,70,557 samples have been tested up to December 21 with 10,72,228 &nbsp;samples being tested on Monday.

The 301 new fatalities include 55 from Maharashtra, 41 from West Bengal, 27 each from Kerala and Delhi.

A total of 1,46,111 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 48,801 from Maharashtra followed by 12,016 from Karnataka, 11,995 from Tamil Nadu, 10,304 from Delhi, 9,401 from West Bengal, 8,212 from Uttar Pradesh, 7,078 from Andhra Pradesh and 5,212 from Punjab.

The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.

"Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research," the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.

New coronavirus strain: WHO appeals for strong action for containment in Europe

In an alarming development, England's Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty said on Saturday that a new strain of coronavirus is spreading more quickly and urgent work was underway to confirm that it doesn't cause higher mortality rate.

“As announced on Monday, the UK has identified a new variant of Covid-19 through Public Health England’s genomic surveillance,” Whitty said in a statement.

“As a result of the rapid spread of the new variant, preliminary modelling data and rapidly rising incidence rates in the South East, the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (NERVTAG) now consider that the new strain can spread more quickly,” he said

Prime Minister Boris Johnson was already in a huddle with his senior ministers to discuss what urgent actions could be taken.

A new coronavirus strain is spreading more quickly

Saudi Arabia kicked-off its three-phase coronavirus vaccination programme on Thursday. The country's health minister was among those inoculated after first shipment of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine arrived in the kingdom.

Along with Health Minister Tawfiq al-Rabiah, a woman in a wheelchair and another man were among the first to be administered the vaccine at a centre in Riyadh, an AFP photographer reported.

"This is the beginning of the end of the crisis," Rabiah told reporters.&nbsp;

In the first stage, people aged over 65 and those with chronic ailment or high risk of infection will receive the vaccine. In second stage, those aged over 50 will be given the vaccine.

Everyone else will be vaccinated in the third phase.

The phases have been decided by the health ministry. It has not specified the dates for each phase or how long the mass vaccination would take. The ministry has said that the vaccine would be "free for all citizens and residents"

Last week, the kingdom approved the use of the vaccine developed by US pharmaceuticals giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech, becoming the second Gulf country to do so after Bahrain.

After Sri Lanka's Supreme Court on December 1 dismissed petitions filed by members of the Muslim community against the government's regulation that makes cremations mandatory for COVID-related deaths, the authorities said that it would cremate the bodies of 19 Muslim coronavirus victims, overriding the families’ objections against the compulsory policy.

The island nation has been experiencing a surge in cases since October, with the number of infections increased more than eight-fold since then to over 29,300 and 142 dead.

Coronavirus victims' bodies are claimed by families and then cremated -- a practice forbidden under Islamic law -- under the strict supervision of health authorities.

But families of 19 Muslims killed by the virus have refused to claim the bodies from a morgue in the capital Colombo, triggering the edict by Attorney-General Dappula de Livera.

"Bodies of Covid-19 victims not claimed by families can be cremated in terms of quarantine regulations," De Livera's spokeswoman said, adding that the bodies would be cremated this week.

Five were cremated on Wednesday, police said.

The policy has been challenged by Muslims, with 12 petitions filed by the minority community and civil society groups in the Supreme Court.

But the top court rejected the petitions last week, without giving reasons why it made that decision.

The Sri Lanka Muslim Council has said a majority of the country's coronavirus victims were Muslim.

A council spokesman added that members of the community feared seeking medical help if Covid-19 positive, as they did not want to be cremated.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation last month urged Colombo to permit Muslims to bury their family members "in line with their religious beliefs and obligations".

Sri Lanka made Covid-19 cremations compulsory in April amid fears spread by influential Buddhist monks -- who support President Gotabaya Rajapaksa -- that burying bodies could contaminate groundwater and spread the disease.&nbsp;

The World Health Organisation states both burials and cremations are permitted.

Sri Lanka to cremate Muslim COVID-19 victims despite objections

In a virtual conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday interacted with the chief ministers of the eight states where COVID-19 have seen a sudden rise post the festive season.

During the first leg of this PM-CM meeting, he took stock of the Covid-19 situation in these states.

Maharashtra, Kerala, Delhi, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Gujarat are the 8 states that are plagued with rising Covid cases as India intensifies its fight against the pandemic.

In the first leg of the meeting, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal blamed the sudden spike on pollution.

He said though the national capital saw a sudden spike of 8,600 cases on November 10, the positivity rate has been steadily decreasing since.

He urged for an additional 1,000 ICU beds in central government hospitals till the third wave lasts.

A presentation was made during the meeting which said the national capital has seen an average 111 deaths in the last one week. Maharashtra`s average death was found to be 93 in the last one week. Rajasthan`s positivity rate was found to be 21 per cent in last week which was very high.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Maharashtra`s Udhhav Thackeray, Rajasthan`s Ashok Gehlot, Gujarat`s Vijay Rupani were also in attendance.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister Harsh Vardhan were also present during the meeting as were V.K. Paul of the Niti Aayog, the Cabinet Secretary and the Union Health Secretary.

During the meeting, Banerjee claimed that the state`s performance on Covid was affected due to the international border it shares with other countries.

She also raised the issue of the GST dues that the Centre owes it.

Ahead of the meeting, the Rajasthan government had hiked fine to Rs 500 for those who were not adhering to wearing of masks. It was mentioned during the PM-CM meeting as well, by the state.

Shah cited examples of the US and Europe to urge states to exercise caution.

He advised the eight states -- in the Covid Red Zone -- to stringently ensure that all wear masks while in public places and maintain physical distancing, besides the high level of hygiene.

The Union Health Secretary said that the Covid situation in four states particularly -- Delhi, Kerala, Rajasthan and Maharashtra needs careful monitoring in the days to come.

Satish Dhupelia's sister Uma Dhupelia-Mesthrie confirmed that her brother had died of COVID-19 related complications after he contracted the disease in the hospital where he had been under treatment for a month due to pneumonia.

"My beloved brother has passed on after a month of illness with pneumonia, a superbug contracted in hospital and then COVID-19 also contracted while he was being treated. He suffered a major cardiac arrest this evening," Ms Uma said in a social media post.

The three siblings are descendants of Manilal Gandhi, who Mahatma Gandhi left behind in South Africa to continue his work after he returned to India after spending two decades.

Mr Dhupelia, who spent most of his life in media, especially as a videographer and photographer, was also very active in assisting the Gandhi Development Trust to continue the work started by the Mahatma at the Phoenix Settlement near Durban.

He was renowned for assisting the needy in all communities and was active in a number of social welfare organisations.

Tributes poured in from his friends and dear ones.

"I am in shock. Satish was a great humanitarian and activist," Political analyst Lubna Nadvi said.

"He was also a great friend of the Advice Desk for Abused Women, and always assisted the organisation in whichever way he could," Nadvi added.

Mr Dhupelia was also a member of the Board of the 1860 Heritage Foundation, which on Monday, November 16 commemorated the arrival of the first indentured labourers from India to work on the sugar cane fields of Durban.

According to the new proposal, “If India lose all four Tests against Australia and win all five against England, they’ll get to 480 points and 66.67%.

“If they win all five against England and lose 3-1 to Australia, they’ll have 510 points and 70.83% (marginally ahead of New Zealand’s maximum possible score).

“If India win 5-0 against England and lose 2-0 to Australia, they’ll have 500 points and 69.44%. So even two draws in Australia will not be enough for India if New Zealand sweep 240 points at home.”

Among other teams, New Zealand seem to have the most advantage as if they win their home series against West Indies and Pakistan then they will receive 420 points i.e 70 per and can finish in the top two and play the finals.

“It may be the same cluster that has continued for well over a month,” Frieden said. “You’re not going to control it if you don’t try to control it.”

Trump has spent most of the year playing down the threat of the virus, and several White House officials, including Meadows, have encouraged him to treat the pandemic as a localized threat in Democratic-leaning states.

Nearly half of Slovakia’s entire population took Covid-19 swabs on Saturday, the first day of a two-day nationwide testing drive the government hopes will help reverse a surge in infections without a hard lockdown.

The scheme, a first for a country of Slovakia’s size, is being watched by other nations looking for ways to slow the virus spread and avoid overwhelming their health systems.

The defence minister, Jaroslav Naď said on Sunday 2.58 million Slovaks had taken a test on Saturday, and 25,850 or 1% tested positive and had to go into quarantine.

The EU country has a population 5.5 million and aims to test as many people as possible, except for children under 10.

More than 40,000 medics and support teams of soldiers, police, administrative workers and volunteers staffed about 5,000 sites to administer the antigen swab tests. The testing was free and voluntary, but the government has said it will impose a lockdown on those who do not participate, including a ban on going to work.

A team of doctors from the Delhi-based All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) under the AYUSH Ministry has found that Ayurveda interventions like Ayush kwatha and Fifatrol tablets can be effective in treatment of mild to moderate cases of COVID-19 infection in a "very short period" with "complete regression of symptoms".

Use of four Ayurveda interventions-- Ayush kwatha, Sanshamanivati, Fifatrol tablets and Laxmivilasa rasa not only improved the condition of COVID-19 patient but also turned the rapid antigen test negative within six days of treatment, according to a case report published in the journal of AIIA -- ''Ayurved Case Report'' in October.

Presently, there is no specific cure for the disease that has infected over 44.7 million people and claimed 1.17 million lives world over.

Citing the case of a 30-year-old male health worker infected with coronavirus, the report said his infection was managed with Samshamana therapy that included oral administration of Ayush kwatha, Sanshamani vati, Fifatrol tablets, and Laxmivilasa rasa.

The patient, a resident of Delhi, after testing positive for COVID-19 was advised home quarantine.He reported with predominantly moderate symptoms of the infection, and the management approach was personalised and holistic in nature incorporating diet, lifestyle, and Samshamana aushadha (pacifying treatment) along with Satvavajaya chikitsa (psychotherapy).

"The mentioned treatment plan was effective in the symptomatic relief (fever, dyspnea, anorexia, fatigue, anosmia, and dysgeusia) as well as in the resolution of viral load, as the patient tested negative in the RAD for COVID-19 within six days of intervention and RT-PCR test was also done on day 16, which was reported negative," the study said.

Herbal drug Fifatrol developed by AIMIL Pharmaceutical helps fight infection, flu and cold. It has immunity strengthening herbs like guduchi, sanjeevini ghanvati, daruharidra, apamarga, chirayata, karanja, kutaki, tulsi, godanti (bhasam), mrityunjaya rasa, tribhuvana kriti rasa and sanjivani vati.

Ayush Kwatha is a combination of four medicinal herbs commonly used in every Indian kitchen - basil leaves (tulsi), cinnamon bark (dalchini), Zingiber officinale (sunthi), and krishna marich (Piper nigrum).

Sanshamani Vati (also called guduchi ghana vati) is an ayurvedic herbal formulation used for all types of fevers.

Laxmivilas Ras is a traditional herbomineral medicine that mainly contains Abhrak Bhasma and cures cough, cold and rhinitis. It soothes the throat and sinuses.

He said the projections, as well as the real-life current evidence of rising infection rates and deaths, showed there is no basis to "the idea that the pandemic is going away," adding: "We do not believe that is true."

US President Donald Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 221,000 Americans so far, has become the top election issue for him and Democratic candidate Joe Biden. Polls have shown that Americans trust Biden more than Trump to handle the crisis.

The IHME study forecast that large, populous states such as California, Texas and Florida will likely face particularly high levels of illness, deaths and demands on hospital resources.

"We expect the surge to steadily grow across different states and at the national level, and to continue to increase as we head towards high levels of daily deaths in late December and in January," Murray said.

The modelling study, which mapped out various scenarios and their projected impact on the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic in the United States, found that universal mask-wearing could have a major impact on deaths rates, potentially saving 130,000 lives.

Current mask use in the United States varies widely. While some states, like New York, set strict rules on when to wear masks, others have no requirements. The issue has become political, in which some supporters have taken their cues from Trump, who is often seen without a mask and has repeatedly questioned their usefulness.

"Expanding mask use is one of the easy wins for the United States ... and can save many lives," Murray said.

Meanwhile, the worldwide number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has surpassed 42 million, Johns Hopkins University says.

The exact number of the coronavirus cases stood at 42,020,333 as of 21:40 GMT on Friday. More than 1.14 million people have died of the disease, the university added.

More than half a million people in the US may die of coronavirus by February: Study 

A study by researchers at University of Arizona has revealed that immunity against COVID-19 may persist at least for five months. The study, led by an Indian origin researcher studied the production of antibodies from a sample of nearly 6,000 people infected with the novel coronavirus.

"We clearly see high-quality antibodies still being produced five to seven months after SARS-CoV-2 infection," said Deepta Bhattacharya, associate professor at the University of Arizona.

Bhattacharya led the study and published it in a scientific journal Immunity alongside Dr Janko Nicolich Zugic.

Dr Nikolich-Zugich is an internationally recognized leading Immunologist and Gerontologist. He spoke with WION.

He said that the longest that the antibodies were observed in a former person were 7 month after his recovery. The duration of the effective immunity varied, but it was found to persist atleast for 5 months.

He did not seem to express surprise at relatively short longevity of the antibodies generated by coronavirus as he said different viral infections elicited different immune response from the human body.

"What is known is that different infections elicit different lengths of antibody responses and but generally viruses do tend to elicit responses that will last for many months and actually many years and there are examples of extraordinary long immunity. So, for instance, the measles virus, mumps virus and smallpox virus are the record holders and the antibodies that we make against them are so long-lived that they will outlive us many times," said Dr Nikolich-Zugich.

He feels that vaccines against coronavirus would indeed prove to be effective.

"I think there is no reason to believe that the vaccines would not do well. First of all, this is not a virus that changes very rapidly. &nbsp;It's not like for instance the HIV virus that has many many mutations occurring every cycle," he said.

However, he feels that things will get worse with coronavirus pandemic before they get better. He said that a second wave of infections was likely as most regions of the world approached winter.

"In winter we go into close quarters and that is you know, providing the virus with more people to infect aT A closer range. So that risK is very much there and it is very likely that we are going to experience, you know, another surge," said Dr Nikolich-Zugich.

The 837 new fatalities include 306 from Maharashtra, 73 from Karnataka,61 from West Bengal, 57 from Tamil Nadu, 46 from Uttar Pradesh and 40 from Chhattisgarh.

Total of 112,998 deaths reported so far in the country includes 41,502 from Maharashtra, followed by 10,529 from Tamil Nadu, 10,356 from Karnataka, 6,589 from Uttar Pradesh,6,382 from Andhra Pradesh, 5,946 from Delhi, 5,931 from West Bengal, 3,980 from Punjab and 3,617from Gujarat.

The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.

"Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research," the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.

This is not a criticism of the advertising or marketing minds, but brings to light the increasingly lesser roles that brands play in times of significant and world changing phenomena, that too distressing ones. This time around, the gap between news and brands has widened, as has the distance between “people behavior” and “brand behavior”.&nbsp;

A large amount of advertising, one could hazard a guess, more than 70%, has carried on as always, with no acknowledgement of the new reality. This is mostly with categories where brand choice has not been impacted – cars, phones, personal technology, fashion, home décor, soft drinks and more. Is it because white teeth, a good camera phone, a high performing car have nothing to do with the suddenly-changed reality? Or is it because the brands hope life will soon be back to normal?&nbsp;

Of those that have chosen to respond and reflect, three categories emerge. All of these either Reassure, Reframe, or Revive. One way or the other, they are all centered on the home. Reassure: Make the home safer, make the food that comes in safer, make going out safer. Reframe: &nbsp;see the brand in this new context. Revive: make the most of your time at home, emotionally.&nbsp;

First, products and services that nod to safety, hygiene and social distancing – some sound like they are just quickly rustling up something to say, but some others offer some real services, however small. From everyone jumping on to the sanitizer, disinfection, and immunity bandwagon, to a travel brand offering a little help with travel regulations and testing. The reassurance that food order-in brands give on systems and processes is a little bit scary because it makes you wonder. Gosh, were they not wearing gloves, cooking at high temperatures and covering their hair earlier? The examples in this category are endless. 
 
Home delivery, immunity products, sanitizers for everything from vegetables to door handles, safe commuting and travelling. Hopefully, the overall hygiene consciousness will make some dent in a low immunity country with a high immunity mindset, where “kuch nahin hoga” and “nothing will happen” is a common refrain.&nbsp;

Second, where the product is the same, but their ads reflect the new reality – a demonstration of the same product, reframed in a slightly adjusted context. Awesome formation biking with the required six- feet distance in between. Gas relievers in the context of stay-at-home food cravings. Easy banking from home. Advice to get out and run. The need for a break from all the unexpected housework and the travails of work-from-home, quite a few directed at men who suddenly find themselves at the kitchen sink. News of pregnancy announced while the husband’s boss is on video call, marriage sites aiding virtual meetings and weddings. There is some nice humour here. The great Indian ability to laugh at ourselves and advertising’s role in helping to see the lighter side – a little bit of entertainment, a little insight, a little moment of connect – “aisa hi hota hai”, “ it happens like this only”.&nbsp;

The third category is of the ads that have responded to the new emotions at play. These are few and far between, mostly with brands that have home products. Revive the home space. Do all the things you always wanted but never had the time to, with your family. Revive relationships and interests. Keep your mind and heart open. Also, here and there, a little nudge to show resilience, to keep going with your ambitions, and tips on restarting your life. A few brands have also made a little effort to salute their partners – a soft drink to its restaurant workers, a pharma brand to pharmacists, an engine oil brand to mechanics. A hat tip with a touch of sympathy and support.&nbsp;

Reassure, Reframe, Revive. Can brand communication go beyond this? Or is it left to the products and services to first redesign themselves? The amount of newspaper space given to the impact on mental health is increasing every day. Impact on society, beyond the advertisement-watching segment is expected to change dramatically. Will “coping” be a big theme going forward? Fundamental concepts of Time, Space and Place, and Value are being redefined.&nbsp;

Are there opportunities for brands to take Reassure, Reframe, Revive to deeper matters of the mind and heart? It doesn’t get more mainstream than this. So not just in the festival entries, please!

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern declared on Monday New Zealand "beat the virus again" and announced restrictions in the country's largest city would be eased, after a second Covid-19 wave was contained.

The virus was believed to have been eradicated in late May after a strict national lockdown led to New Zealanders enjoying 102 days without community transmission.&nbsp;

But a new cluster emerged in Auckland in August, forcing the city of 1.5 million into lockdown for almost three weeks.

With no new confirmed cases in Auckland for 12 days, Ardern said Monday the virus was now under control and congratulated residents for enduring the second lockdown.

"It felt longer and dragged on in what was already starting to feel like a very long year," she said.

"But despite this, Aucklanders and New Zealanders stuck to the plan that has worked twice now, and beat the virus again."&nbsp;

Ardern said from late Wednesday Auckland would join the rest of New Zealand on level one, the lowest rating on the government's four-tier virus alert system.&nbsp;

Under the change, there are no restrictions on social gatherings, allowing the second Bledisloe Cup Test in Auckland on October 18 to be played in front of a full stadium at Eden Park.&nbsp;

"This is positive news that (Auckland fans) will be able to enjoy Test match rugby," New Zealand Rugby said in a statement.&nbsp;

New Zealand has recorded just 25 Covid-19 deaths in a population of five million, with 40 active cases in the country on Monday.&nbsp;

But Ardern, who faces a general election on October 17, warned success could not be taken for granted.

She pointed to a decline in the use of the official Covid-19 tracing app and falling virus test numbers.

"A resurgence of the virus is not our only worry, resurgence of complacency is right up there too," Ardern said.

However, now, in order to make sure the President's health remains steady, he has been airlifted to a military hospital outside Washington on Friday.

Trump&nbsp;will be staying at the hospital for the "next few days" and will undergo treatment for COVID-19, the White House reported.

He&nbsp;was now spotted wearing a mask&nbsp;and did not take any questions from the journalists. However, the onlookers and the local media confirmed that&nbsp;Trump&nbsp;was able to walk unassisted.

Trump&nbsp;also issued a video message on his Twitter account&nbsp;where he thanked everyone for their support and assured that he is doing very well.&nbsp;"I want to thank everybody for the tremendous support," he said.

Trump airlifted to military hospital for COVID treatment; releases video message

A coronavirus outbreak that infected President Donald Trump and spread to the Senate threw a fresh element of uncertainty Friday into the politically fraught fight over installing Judge Amy Coney Barrett on the Supreme Court before Election Day, as Republicans vowed to press ahead and Democrats insisted on a pause.

Pulling off a complex confirmation that touches all three branches of government in the four weeks remaining before the election always promised to be a daunting task for Republicans in the middle of a pandemic. But by Friday evening, with the White House and Congress in turmoil and two Republican members of the Judiciary Committee, Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, among those announcing they had tested positive for the virus, it was clear that the challenge had grown steeper.

Top Republicans insisted they would move ahead at an uncommonly swift pace to hold hearings on Barrett’s nomination by Oct. 12, send her nomination to the full Senate by Oct. 22 and confirm her as soon as Oct. 26, eight days before Election Day — even if it meant breaking Senate norms and considering a lifetime judicial nomination by videoconference.

But the latest outbreak raised the possibility that Republicans could lose their slim majority in the Judiciary Committee or on the Senate floor.

It gave Democrats, who were already objecting to Trump’s push to install a new Supreme Court justice so close to the election, a new reason to call for a delay. Seeing a potential opening, top Democrats called for the Senate to pause and assess the scope of the outbreak.

They declared that a fully virtual hearing for a candidate for a lifetime appointment to the nation’s highest court would be unacceptable.

“It’s critical that Chairman Graham put the health of senators, the nominee and staff first — and ensure a full and fair hearing that is not rushed, not truncated and not virtual,” Sens. Chuck Schumer of New York, the minority leader, and Dianne Feinstein of California, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said in a joint statement. “Otherwise, this already illegitimate process will become a dangerous one.”

On Friday evening, after Tillis announced his positive test result, Schumer renewed his call for delay, writing on Twitter that going forward with hearings would be “irresponsible and dangerous.”

“There is absolutely no good reason to do so,” he said.

But Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., chair of the panel, vowed he would stick to his schedule, and Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the majority leader, said he intended to move the nomination as soon as the committee approved it.

Full steam ahead with the fair, thorough, timely process that the nominee, the Court, &amp;amp; the country deserve.”

Republican officials said they had no doubt that senators would find a way to muscle through the nomination over Democrats’ protests.

But Republicans cannot afford to have many members sidelined by illness, which could provide Democrats an opportunity to stall the proceedings. Two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, have already raised objections to moving ahead before the election, reducing the wiggle room in the 53-47 Republican majority.

McConnell has insisted throughout the pandemic that the Senate continue to meet in person, but he conceded Friday that keeping Republican senators healthy was crucial to the fate of the nomination.

“I think every precaution needs to be taken because we don’t anticipate any Democratic support at all, either in committee or the full Senate, and therefore everybody needs to be in an all-hands-on-deck mindset,” he said in an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.

The posturing around the court fight played out as government officials at the White House and on Capitol Hill spent Friday racing to trace those who had come in contact with known carriers of the virus to determine how far it had spread.

It is imperative that all results be made public in order to contain a possible outbreak and so we can determine the need for senators and staff to quarantine or self-isolate.”

Trump’s diagnosis imperils quick Supreme Court confirmation timeline

Live-attenuated vaccines are a <a href="https://www.vaccines.gov/basics/types">type of vaccine</a> used for smallpox and childhood diseases like measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox, in which a weakened or “attenuated” form of the virus that causes the disease is manufactured.

Because such vaccines are so similar to the natural infection that they help prevent, they create a strong and long-lasting, even life-time immune response.

The disadvantage of live-attenuated vaccines resides in the fact that, because they contain a small amount of the weakened live virus, people with compromised immune systems or long-term health problems often referred to as “pre-conditions” may be at risk.

It has now been <a href="https://twitter.com/Rossana38510044/status/1311054913754009600">suggested</a> that SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, may have arisen from laboratory experiments to produce a live-attenuated vaccine, a process that may have included genetic manipulation.

Over time, viruses have developed strategies to avoid the human immune response, allowing them to better infect cells and replicate.

Many SARS-CoV-2 patients <a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/117/21/11727">develop</a> only low levels of neutralizing antibodies and suffer prolonged illness compared to SARS-CoV-1, the coronavirus responsible for the 2002-2003 pandemic, indicating that SARS-CoV-2 evades human immune surveillance more effectively.

It is <a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/117/21/11727">widely-known</a> that when viruses evolve to escape immune detection, they often suffer reduced fitness and become less infectious, yet SARS-CoV-2 remains highly infectious.

SARS-CoV-2 first binds to the human cell and then undergoes a membrane fusion process to gain entry, a process which is mediated by its spike protein.

The S1 component of the spike protein contains the receptor binding domain (RBD) that binds to the human angiotensin converting enzyme-2 receptor (ACE2), while the S2 segment of the spike contains the fusion-regulating element. At the S1-S2 junction is a furin polybasic cleavage site, which is involved in the separation of the S1 from the S2 section.

The RBD constantly switches between an “up” position that allows for receptor binding and “down” position in order to evade an immune response.

For membrane fusion and viral entry into the cell to occur, the spike protein must be split at the S1-S2 junction by an enzymatic process. The furin polybasic cleavage site facilitates that process by interacting with the enzymes of the human cell surface.

How then does SARS-CoV-2, which is highly-adapted for human infection, evade the immune response?

The dynamic state of the RBD <a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/117/21/11727">may explain</a> the paradox. That is, the switching between an “up” position that allows for receptor binding and “down” position in order to evade an immune response.

It appears that the SARS-CoV-2 RBD exists mainly in the “down” position to avoid triggering the immune system.

According to such a scenario, SARS-CoV-2 is protected from an immune response until the very moment infection takes place.

How is all of that related to vaccine development?

In order to produce a live-attenuated vaccine for a coronavirus, you need a RBD that is highly specific for human infection, but one that is also exposed to the human immune system.

There are no known naturally-occurring coronaviruses with a RBD highly adapted for human infection and, at the same time, containing the furin polybasic cleavage site found in SARS-CoV-2.

It is feasible, therefore, that the COVID-19 pandemic resulted from the accidental laboratory release of a coronavirus being artificially modified for the production of a live-attenuated vaccine.

Is the COVID-19 pandemic a case of vaccine research gone wrong?

US businesses with COVID-19 outbreaks are facing an emerging legal threat from claims that workers brought coronavirus home and infected relatives, which one risk analysis firm said could cost employers billions of dollars.

The daughter of Esperanza Ugalde of Illinois filed in August what lawyers believe is the first wrongful death "take-home" lawsuit, alleging her mother died of COVID-19 that her father contracted at Aurora Packing Co's meat processing plant.

The cases borrow elements from "take-home" asbestos litigation and avoid caps on liability for workplace injuries, exposing the business to costly pain and suffering damages, even though the complainant never set foot on their premises.

"Businesses should be very concerned about these cases," said labour and employment attorney Tom Gies of Crowell &amp; Moring, which defends employers.

The lawsuit against Aurora alleges that Ricardo Ugalde worked "shoulder to shoulder" on the company's processing line in April when Aurora knew it had a coronavirus outbreak at its facility and failed to warn employees or adopt any infection prevention measures.

Aurora did not respond to a request for comment.

Between 7% and 9% of the roughly 200,000 US COVID-19 deaths so far are believed to stem from take-home infections and the lawsuits could cost businesses up to $21 billion if the number of Americans fatalities reaches 300,000, according to Praedicat, a firm that evaluates risks for insurers.

Rob Reville, Praedicat's chief executive, cautions that is a worst-case scenario and said the cases might cost far less, depending on how judges view the lawsuits.

The US workers compensation system generally makes it difficult for workers to sue for COVID-19. The system caps liability for businesses and bars costly lawsuits in return for quick payments to employees, who do not need to prove fault.

But Esperanza Ugalde was not an employee of Aurora, so her family can sue the company. Depending on the circumstances, a successful wrongful death case can top $1 million in damages.

Take-home cases have been around for decades in asbestos litigation and courts have split on whether a business has an obligation to members of the public who have never been on their premises.

In 2013, a California jury awarded Rose-Marie Griggs $27.3 million in compensatory and punitive damages after she contracted mesothelioma that her lawyers argued was caused by asbestos fibers carried home in the 1950s on the work clothes of her then-husband, who installed insulation for an affiliate of Owens-Illinios Inc.

The company appealed and two sides reached a private settlement before the appeal was heard.

Contesting The 'Causal Chain'

Attorneys for both complainants and companies said successful cases require a strong "causal chain" linking the sick family member to the worker and then to the business and the business's alleged failure to adopt safety measures.

Miriam Alvarez Reynoso sued Byrne &amp; Schaefer Inc, a manufacturer of electrical components in Lockport, Illinois, alleging negligence by the company led to her contracting COVID-19 and suffering "serious injuries to multiple organs."

Reynoso's lawsuit says she became infected while caring for her husband Servando Reynoso, a parts assembler at the company, who came home sick from work on April 8. It lists 18 categories of alleged shortcomings by Byrne &amp; Schaefer, including failing to clean work areas and ignoring employees who said they had COVID-19 symptoms.

Company owner Tim Byrne said his five employees wore masks routinely before the pandemic to protect against dust and regularly used gloves.

"He was sick before anyone else," said Byrne. "It's difficult to prove after the fact."

Lawyers said employers would likely be reluctant to settle the cases for significant sums until claims were vetted in the court system.

Peter Wozniak, an attorney with Barnes &amp; Thornburg who represents employers, said the cases will test juror attitudes toward the behaviour of complainants, who need to show they protected themselves from other sources of infection.

"Are you always wearing a mask? Are you staying six feet away? Are you washing your hands," he said. "It will be interesting and unpredictable with regards to people's attitudes for individual responsibility."

The best protection for business owners will be adopting and documenting measures to protect workers.

"If they had acted reasonably and if Aurora put these things in place before the death of Esperanza I don't know if I would have taken the case," said Bridget Duignan, who represents Ugalde's daughter. 
"But they did nothing."

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was diagnosed with dengue on Thursday, a day after testing positive for COVID-19.

However, his health condition is stable, a top official from the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital, in which Sisodia is admitted, informed.

Sisodia was diagnosed with Dengue while receiving treatment at the government-run LNJP hospital where he was admitted on Wednesday after he complained of persistent fever and falling levels of Oxygen, the official added.

On September 14, Sisodia had tweeted to announce his positive status and warn those who came in contact with him.
