Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday held a meeting with Parliamentary floor leaders of different parties -- over the coronavirus pandemic. However, an announcement regarding the extension or culmination of the pan-India lockdown is unlikely to be made before April 11.

The meeting started at 11 am through video conferencing. The primary point on the agenda is speculated to be whether to end the coronavirus lockdown or extend it. Another major point was the approach the government should adopt in case it wishes to withdraw the lockdown.

The meet comes amidst indications that the Central government may extend the lockdown across the country beyond April 14 after several states have favoured the extension to contain the fast-spreading virus, as the positive cases in the country show no signs of any let up.

The economic impact of the shutdown and possible economic packages were also discussed. and how to deal with it.

Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah were present with PM Modi.

Those participated, included Ghulam Nabi Azad, leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha, and Nationalist Congress Party head Sharad Pawar. The Shiv Sena is believed to have been represented by Sanjay Raut, the Lok Janshakti Party by Chirag Paswan, the Samajwadi Party by Prof Ram Gopal Yadav, the Bahujan Samaj Party by Danish Ali and Satish Mishra and the Biju Janata Dal by Pinaki Misra.

Sources said, these leaders were briefed by secretaries of various ministries---health, home and rural development ---on the actions taken by the government to tackle COVID-19 and mitigate the hardships arising out of the lockdown.

Several opposition leaders raised the issue of shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for health workers in the country while few also suggested that construction of the new parliament building should be avoided, a source said.

As per the Union health ministry's Wednesday morning update, there are 149 deaths and 5,194 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country even as the country entered its third week of nationwide lockdown.

The AIIMS has released guidelines for the reuse of PPE, citing their fast depletion of stocks in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, while stressing that the methods for disinfection should only be considered as extraordinary last-resort methods in the event of an imminent shortages of such kits.

According to the AIIMS guidelines, decontamination of PPE kits for the purpose of reuse is currently not recommended, primarily because of concerns that it would degrade the performance, especially of the respirator.

But then, decontamination and reuse of PPE kits may provide another solution by extending the existing on-hand supplies, the guidelines say.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has strained our resources tremendously in the healthcare setting. One of the most urgent issues is the fast depletion of personal protective equipment (PPE) used in the care of patients. This is a significant concern for healthcare workers' health and safety," the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said.

Healthcare workers across the country have highlighted the paucity of PPE, including coveralls, goggles, masks, gloves and shoe covers among others.

According to the AIIMS guidelines, coveralls and N95 masks can be decontaminated using doubling dilution of 11 per cent hydrogen peroxide vapour in a sealed room while face shields and goggles can be decontaminated using 0.5 per cent sodium hypochlorite solution and 70 per cent alcohol.

The death toll due to the novel coronavirus rose to 149 and the number of cases climbed to 5,194 in the country on Wednesday, according to the Union Health Ministry.

However, a PTI tally of the figures reported by various states as on Tuesday 9.45 pm showed at least 162 deaths in the country due to COVID-19.

Maulana Muhammad Saad Kandhalvi, the chief of the Delhi-based Tablighi Jamaat Markaz, is living in self quarantine at the residence of his close associate in south east Delhi, said sources on Wednesday.

Tablighi Jamaat Markaz has been in the eye of the storm since end of March for holding a congregation in Delhi despite prohibitory orders from the government in view of pan-India lockdown imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The site has since been linked to more than 1,000 cases of the novel coronavirus.

The government has quarantined at least 25,000 Jamaat members in different states and is still trying to trace all contacts.

In quarantine, the behaviour of the Jamaat members has attracted even more headlines. They are reported to have been spitting at hosital staff, and harassing female staff.

All this, while the Markaz Chief has conveniently been evading the authorities. He, it's said, has been controversial since he made way to the top post.

The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has so far served two notices to Mohammad Saad Kandhalvi -- the second one on Monday, after they found his response over the first notice "unsatisfactory".

The Congress has sought an inquiry into the whole issue.

The role of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is also being questioned.

A midnight light show on either side of the Yangtze river, which flows through China's Wuhan, brightened up the skyline and marked the culmination of the coronavirus lockdown in the city.

China ended coronavirus lockdown measures in Wuhan 11 weeks after it became the epicentre of what has since developed into a global crisis. The shutdown came as the coronavirus began spreading to the rest of China and overseas during the Lunar New Year holiday in late January, when many Chinese travel.

Wuhan residents are, however, still urged not to leave their neighbourhoods, the city and even the province unless necessary, health officials said on Tuesday.

Citizens of Germany will now be able to keep a track on the growing number of coronavirus cases in their country and the world.

The Robert Koch Institute has developed an app that people can install on their smartphones, smartwatches or fitness trackers in order to follow up on how COVID-19 is spreading in the country.

Researchers said the personal data transmitted to the system contains information on a user's gender, age, weight and height, physical activity, heart rate, body temperature, and postal code, Sputnik news agency reported.

The institute added that the collected data would be used "exclusively for scientific purposes," and that the app could not replace a diagnostic test for COVID-19.

China has also developed an app that tracks the health curve of a person.

The “health code” service developed for the Chinese government gives users colour-coded designations based on their health status and travel history and a QR code that can be scanned by authorities, a report said.

The shipment was allegedly diverted from an airport in Bangkok. The US embassy representative in Thailand simply claimed to have no knowledge.

'Modern piracy': Did United States reroute a shipment of face masks headed to Germany?

The tiger that tested positive for the novel coronavirus in the United States at the Bronx Zoo appeared to heal on Monday, after doses of medication.

Along with Nadia, the 4-year-old Malayan tiger, six other big cats had also developed a dry cough.

"A little TLC by the keepers taking care of them, some anti-inflammatory medications helped," Paul Calle, chief veterinarian for the Wildlife Conservation Society's Bronx Zoo, told Reuters.

Some of the four tigers and three lions got antibiotics.

Nadia had stopped eating and was the only one tested because the zoo did not want to subject all the cats to anesthesia.

Later, swabs of her nose and throat and tracheal fluid from her lungs were sent to veterinary schools at Cornell University and the University of Illinois, which conducted animal COVID testing.

The virus that causes COVID-19 is believed to have spread from animals to humans, and a handful of animals have tested positive in Hong Kong too. But officials believe this is a unique case because Nadia became sick after exposure to an asymptomatic zoo employee.

The United States has repatriated around 1,300 Americans from India, but the officials are still not sure about how many Americans intend to repatriate to the US, as many of them are developing cold feet in flying back home.

"About 1,300 American citizens have been brought back as of last night, and we have five additional flights scheduled this week. It's difficult to say with any certainty how many Americans intend or need assistance in repatriating to the US. We have had over 7,000 register with the US embassy and consulate," Alice G Wells, the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, said during a teleconference on Monday.

The cold feet are being seen in the context of the US emerging as the hot spot of coronavirus in the world. Till Monday, over 360,000 people had tested positive with coronavirus and the fatalities crossed the 10,000.

In addition, between 100,000 and 200,000 COVID-19 deaths have been projected in the US in the next several weeks.

The US, however, is currently working on over 80 flights worldwide -- 13 from South and Central Asia, including special flights home for about 2,900 US citizens from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.

Hydrogen Peroxide fumes decontaminate the body, hands and clothes of a person.

The UV system decontaminates the chamber.

PROCESS

The sensors mounted in the chamber detect the entry of a person and start the Hydrogen Peroxide mist generation process.

The person is required to walk through the chamber to the chamber's end. When the person exits, the system shuts off the hydrogen peroxide fumigation system and turns on the UV lamp inside the chamber to decontaminate it.

The whole process takes only 40 seconds.

The system has see-through glass panels on sidewalls for monitoring purpose.

The UV light -- turned on for three minutes -- is used to disinfect the chamber after each patient leaves.

India's tally of COVID-19 positive cases rose to 4,421 on Tuesday. Out of the 4,421 cases, 3,981 are active cases while 325 have been cured or discharged and one has migrated. The death toll stands at 114.

The world is currently experiencing the biggest pandemic of the last few decades: No major countries have been spared by the fury of COVID-19, which only takes a sneeze to catch on to potential carriers!

The virus has now killed over 70,000 people worldwide, with China, the US, and Italy serving as the major hotspots.

Amidst the chaos and a crumbling healthcare infrastructure, protective gear like masks and gloves are increasingly running out.

The notorious corner of the internet: what is called the “dark web”, which can be accessed only using certain browsers is famous for selling arms and drugs. The dark web hosts multiple shopping websites that deliver all these goods to your doorstep.

However, the murky side of the internet is now selling face masks in the times of a pandemic.

What’s interesting is that while the rates of masks in the physical world as well as on the safer side of the internet have shot up due to overwhelming demand, the price of the same commodities on the dark web is much lesser. This could be as alarming as comforting, for people may be selling counterfeit or ineffective products.

One N95 mask on Amazon or eBay costs about $10, while dark web is selling it for a much acceptable price of $1.75.

From drugs to life-saving paraphernalia: One can also apparently buy testing kits for the virus online for over $90 per kit. Currently, many countries are hesitant in terms of testing because of the shortage of kits, and also due to the focus on serious life-threatening cases.

Additionally, capitalising on the panic-stricken people, sellers on the dark web are offering unverified cures with unverifiable descriptions.

Additionally, you could get caught in a legal crossfire as most of these web portals sell goods that remain largely illegal. Besides drugs, exotic animals, and banned visual material like underage pornography is openly sold across the web.

A company in Israel has done the unthinkable! Uveye, a start-up claims that not only can it detect issues with a vehicle remotely, but now it can also test potential carriers of coronavirus without contact.

The contact-free emergency vehicle inspection system is equipped with thermal tech that can pick up any anomalies in the vehicle’s performance, while checking the temperature of the driver, or other passengers.

But how will they detect the fever? The company claims that the windshields are equipped with detection tech to record the temperatures.

Besides this, the company can safely diagnose issues with the vehicles. These include tire quality, issues with the braking system, oil health, et cetera.

“Atlas” and “Helios” are the two flagship inspection technologies that have been embedded into the vehicular system.

According to a statement released by the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of UVeye, Amir Hever, the tech can alleviate the need for a “hands on” approach to testing and inspection. The basic rationale behind this is to limit potential contact among people, especially automobile sector workers who have to manually diagnose and fix issues with the vehicles.

Considering it’s hard to detect who is carrying the virus, it might as well save many lives. Many reports have claimed that the virus can live on metal and plastic surfaces for up to three days.

To help deal with the pandemic, the start-up recently offered to equip emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire brigades, and police vehicles with this technology on a not-for-profit basis. Additionally, they have shown interest in fitting the same tech into vehicles that are used for delivering food and medical supplies.
