United States President Donald Trump has hinted at a possible retaliation if India does not lift its hold on the export of Hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malarial drug being used in the treatment of coronavirus patients.

Trump added he saw no reason why India would not lift the hold on the US order of the medicine.

"I didn't hear that that was his (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) decision. I know that he stopped it for other countries. I spoke to him yesterday. [It was a] very very good talk, and we'll see whether or not that stays I wouldn't be surprised if he would you know because India does very well with the United States," Trump said at a press briefing from the White House, on Monday.

Trump added PM Modi said he would consider the request of releasing the order to the US.

The US President added, "So I wouldn't be surprised if that was a decision he'd have to tell me that I spoke to him Sunday morning I called him and I said we'd appreciate your allowing our supply to come out. If he doesn't allow it to come out, that would be okay. But there would be retaliation. Why wouldn't there be?"

"...India is giving serious consideration to releasing the hold it put on a US order for hydroxychloroquine," Trump subsequently announced at the White House Coronavirus task force briefing.

World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said Africa would not become a testing ground for any vaccines against COVID-19.

His reaction came in the aftermath of two French doctors being accused of racism after a TV debate in which one suggested trials in Africa to see if a tuberculosis vaccine would prove effective against coronavirus.

"Africa cannot and will not be a testing ground for any vaccine. We will follow all the rules to test any vaccine or therapeutics all over the world using exactly the same rule, whether it's in Europe, Africa or wherever," Tedros said, in Geneva on Monday.

According to the Xinhua news agency, Tedros was appalled by comments made last week by some scientists, who said the testing ground for the new vaccines will be Africa. He said "the hangover from a colonial mentality has to stop, adding this would not happen in Africa, and will not happen elsewhere, in any country.

Also read: Is your protective gear causing coronavirus cross-contamination?

"Proper protocol will be followed and human beings will be treated as human beings... the same way equally," he underlined.

Tedros revealed that the WHO would hopefully announce later this week an initiative to accelerate research, development and production of vaccines against COVID-19, as well as designed mechanisms for "equitable distribution" of the vaccines.

"We will have a problem while looking for vaccines, unless we break the barriers to equitable distribution of the products. And for this, we need to address the challenges to access ahead of time."

According to the WHO chief, about 20 institutions and companies are racing to develop a vaccine.

World Health Day: PM Modi, Congress thank health staff 'leading battle against coronavirus'

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday declared a state of emergency to fight new coronavirus infections in major population centres and unveiled a stimulus package he described as among the world`s biggest to soften the economic blow.

The state of emergency, giving authorities more power to press people to stay at home and businesses to close, will last through May 6 and be imposed in the capital, Tokyo, and six other prefectures - accounting for about 44% of Japan`s population.

"The most important thing now is for each citizen to change our actions," Abe said in televised comments made at a meeting of a government task force.

"If each of us can reduce contact with other people by at least 70%, and ideally by 80%, we should be able to see a peak in the number of infections in two weeks," he said.

The government also approved the stimulus package worth 108 trillion yen ($990 billion) - equal to 20% of Japan`s economic output - to cushion the impact of the epidemic on the world`s third-largest economy.

That exceeds the equivalent of 11% of U.S. output for the stimulus package laid out by President Donald Trump and 5% of output for Germany`s package.

Direct fiscal spending amount to 39.5 trillion yen, or about 7% of the economy, more than double the amount Japan spent following the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers.

Japan has been spared the big outbreaks of the coronavirus seen in other global hot spots, but a recent, steady rise in infections in Tokyo, Osaka and other areas led to growing calls for Abe to announce a state of emergency.

Coronavirus infections in Tokyo more than doubled to about 1,200 in the past week, with more than 80 new ones reported on Tuesday, accounting for the highest number in the country. Nationwide, cases have climbed past 4,000 with 93 deaths as of Monday.

Abe has stressed that the state of emergency will stop short of imposing a formal lockdown as seen in other countries.

The emergency gives governors the authority to call on people to stay at home and businesses to close. With no penalties for ignoring the requests in most cases, enforcement will rely more on peer pressure and respect for authority.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said the city was in talks with the central government to decide what types of facilities it would ask to close or curtail business hours, while reiterating there would be no restrictions on buying groceries and medicine.

SUFFICIENT FOOD

The government would not ask rail companies to reduce the number of trains in operation, Abe said.

Other essential infrastructure like mail and utilities would operate, as will ATMs and banks, public broadcaster NHK said.

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Taku Eto called on shoppers to stay calm.
"We are asking citizens to buy only what they need when they need it as there is sufficient food supply and no suspension is planned at food factories," he told reporters earlier, adding there was no sign of disruption to Japan`s grain imports.

But the restrictions will add to pains the virus is inflicting on the world`s third-largest economy, which is seen as already in recession as supply chain disruptions and travel bans chill factory output and consumption.

Metropolitan Tokyo alone accounts for about 20% of Japan`s overall gross domestic product.

Japan will sell a record amount of additional bonds worth more than 18 trillion yen to fund the package, adding to its huge debt which is twice the size of its economy.

While the stimulus could ease the immediate damage from the pandemic, lawmakers are already calling for even bigger spending to prevent bankruptcies and job losses.

Analysts expect the economy, which shrank in the final quarter of last year, to post two more quarters of contraction, piling pressure on the government and the central bank to do more.

"The government will probably compile another supplementary budget soon to stimulate the economy with even more spending," said Takahide Kiuchi, a former Bank of Japan board member who is now an economist at Nomura Research Institute.

Japan declares coronavirus emergency, approves near $1 trillion stimulus package

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the world into submission: from the biggest economy to the smallest - everything is now at a standstill!

When the first case was reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December, nobody expected it to infect the whole world.

But one key ingredient of every pandemic was missed: early mitigation strategies. It was only in the last 30 days that countries scrambled to shut their own countries from the outside world.

Regardless, multiple theories have emerged amid the pandemic. Did the Chinese manufacture it? Did the US send it to China? Is it a Russian virus? Is North Korea behind it? Such discourses rooted in hyper-nationalism barely find any validation in the scientific community.

As the blame shifted from China to its wet markets that sell exotic animals, there still seems to be clarity on where it emerged from.

However, scientists are hard at work to find its origin. It is still widely believed that a bat-infected animal, perhaps a pangolin, infected the first human.

There’s one thing the scientists are sure of - that the virus did not develop among humans, but was contracted from an animal. In biological terms, this is called a “zoonotic spillover”.

A Chinese article published in February claimed that the COVID-19 disease is 96 per cent identical to a bat coronavirus in terms of its genomatic make-up.

Even then, there was no silencing conspiracy theories. A group of 27 scientists from the US wrote a letter in The Lancet.

"Conspiracy theories do nothing but create fear, rumours, and prejudice that jeopardise our global collaboration in the fight against this virus", it said.

They further ascertained, "this coronavirus originated in wildlife, as have so many other emerging pathogens."

The bat that flew away

Even with such striking similarities, the scientific community is focused on finding the cure and containing the disease, and has not been able to trace the bats that may be carrying the disease, which could resurface later on.

However, it’s not clear whether the virus directly jumped from a bat to human beings or whether it followed a chain of carriers who then gave it to humans, starting in Wuhan.

It is possible that an infected farm animal was brought to the wet market alive - the perfect breeding ground for any viral infection - and was then inadvertently transferred on to humans!

But can we be sure? The upcoming few months will decide!

Also read: This Asian country is paying 75% wages of 2 million workers this month to beat economic slowdown "Conspiracy theories do nothing but create fear, rumours, and prejudice that jeopardise our global collaboration in the fight against this virus", it said. They further ascertained, "this coronavirus originated in wildlife, as have so many other emerging pathogens." The bat that flew away Even with such striking similarities, the scientific community is focused on finding the cure and containing the disease, and has not been able to trace the bats that may be carrying the disease, which could resurface later on. However, it’s not clear whether the virus directly jumped from a bat to human beings or whether it followed a chain of carriers who then gave it to humans, starting in Wuhan. Up to 20 per cent of the children infected by the novel coronavirus in the United States require hospitalisation, with infants also likely to be in that group.

The verdict was given by the government’s first in-depth analysis of COVID-19 by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the youngest patient population.

More than 3,55,000 people in the United States have tested positive for the disease, with coronavirus-related deaths crossing the 10,000 mark on Monday.

Compared with adults, children infected with the coronavirus are less likely to have symptoms and more likely to have a mild illness. This also substantiates the studies published in China that said COVID-19 might be overlooked in children even as they are spreading it to adults.

The data show COVID-19 may be producing different symptoms in the young.

The analysis found that up to 2 per cent of infected children required intensive care unit admission.

While 56 per cent of children for whom data was available had fever, the rate was 71 per cent in adults.

Cough was a symptom in 54 per cent of kids. Shortness of breath developed in 13 per cent of those under 18. Muscle aches and pains, sore throat, headache, and diarrhea were also less common in children.

One child who tested positive for the disease had no symptoms at all. Three infected children have died.

In comparison, up to a third of adults under age 65 require hospitalisation, with up to 4.5 per cent needing intensive care.

The pan-India lockdown imposed due to the spurt in confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country may have induced further lowering of the employment rate. According to estimates put out by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the overall unemployment rate hit over 23 per cent in the last week of March 2020.

Estimates show that the employment situation worsened from the beginning of March 2020, before the lockdown was put in place.

Mahesh Vyas, CMIE’s chief executive, wrote on the organisation’s website: "In March 2020, the labour participation rate fell to an all-time low, the unemployment rate shot up sharply and the employment rate fell to its all-time low."

"The unemployment rate in March was 8.7 per cent. This is the highest unemployment rate in 43 months…The unemployment rate during this last week [of March] was 23.8 per cent. Labour participation rate fell to 39 per cent and the employment rate was a mere 30 per cent."

It so happened that Trump, in his daily briefing, said he had a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in which he asked him to lift India's hold on the export of Hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malarial drug being used in the treatment of coronavirus patients.

Trump added he saw no reason why India would not lift the hold on the US order of the medicine, and that PM Modi said he would consider the request of releasing the order to the US.

Recently, videos on Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, etc showed mobile phone masts on fire in British cities of Birmingham and Merseyside. The fire was falsely attributed to coronavirus.

The scientific community has reiterated many times that the virus primarily spreads through surface contact followed by one touching their face with those infected hands.

Even now, many scientists have referred to the idea as “complete rubbish”. Additionally, it is also biologically impossible. The only way for the virus to spread through phone technology is if the infected person touches a phone, doesn’t disinfect it, and then someone else touches it, further creating a new cycle of the virus.

A classic case of fake news, the post has been shared by many famous users on social media.

The National Health Service’s England Medical Director Stephen Powis accurately called it “the worst kind of fake news”, the BBC reported.

In a surprising turn of events, a tiger has recently tested positive for the coronavirus infection.

A four-year-old Malayan tiger in New York City’s Bronx Zoo was recently tested and found positive.

Over the last few weeks, Nadia - the tiger had been displaying symptoms like dry cough.

Housed in the Bronx Zoo, Nadia’s results were confirmed as positive by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa.

Others around her have also been displaying symptoms, including her Malayan tiger sister Azul, and three African lions.

It is suspected that the virus was transmitted by a zookeeper, and all of them are expect to recover swiftly.

"We tested the cat [Nadia] out of an abundance of caution and will ensure any knowledge we gain about Covid-19 will contribute to the world's continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus," the zoo’s statement released on Sunday read.

The statement further claimed that the appetite of the animals had dropped tremendously, but that they are doing well otherwise.

“The cats are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers”, the statement added.

Can animals transmit it to humans?

The virus is still new, and its effects even on the human body are still being studied. It is not clear how the virus will develop in tigers or lions.

Even though nobody knows yet how various species can react to new infections, the animals have been put under 24x7 monitoring.

The zoo hosts many other big cats, including tigers, cheetahs, cloud leopards, snow leopards, Amur leopards, a puma, etc. None of these have shown signs yet.

"Our cats were infected by a person caring for them who was asymptomatically infected with the virus or before that person developed symptoms," the zoo said.

The cats that had developed symptoms have now been quarantined in the “Tiger Mountain” area.

The Wildlife Conservation Society in New York City currently controls and runs four zoos, which have all remained closed since March 16.

However, as this case took everyone by surprise, new measures to avoid infection have been enforced.

However, no need to panic… yet! Turns out, animals cannot infect human beings, ie, they cannot transmit the virus to humans if they are carrying it. Or at least, there is no evidence for the same.

"No evidence that any person has been infected with Covid-19 in the US by animals, including by pet dogs or cats," the statement added.

However, many wild animals are at risk of developing the virus, which would then become uncontrollable. This holds true for close relatives of human beings, like gorillas, orangutans, and chimps.
