Gold is something humankind has fought and killed for across centuries. For us, gold comes from mines. But on a cosmic scale, it forms when massive stars collide. Formation of the much-sought-after precious metal is just as violent as the historical efforts to possess it.

Gold, and other metals heavier than iron are formed in space when two neutron stars collide. The collision of these ultra-dense, dead stars causes ripples in the very fabric of spacetime. These ripples are called gravitational waves. The collision also causes high energy gamma-ray bursts and a flash of light (kilonova) which can be detected across large distances in space.

A team of researchers which had participation from the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics and the University of Potsdam studied the only recorded kilonova explosion. We recorded it in the year 2017.

The institute has said that the scientists used an advanced software to study signatures of this kilonova. Other than what was recorded in the year 2017, more data obtained from radio and X-ray observation of other stars was added. Findings collected from collision experiment carried out here on Earth were also included.

The team developed a model based on their study of the kilonova explosion recorded in 2017. The model is going to be helpful in understanding the only known process in the universe that forms metals heavier than iron.

As per the latest study, if two decaying stars get involved in a rare cataclysmic collision in the Milky Way galaxy, it can rip off the protective ozone layer from Earth and lead to the mass extinction of all life forms on the planet.

Till now, only some similar neutron star collision events, which are known as kilonovas, have been observed by astronomers. If such an explosion occurs in Earth's close proximity, it may turn dangerous for life on Earth, stated scientists, including those who worked at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the United States.

The research, which is yet-to-be peer-reviewed, can help determine the possibility of life surviving on other worlds, which are close to these star collision events.

The biggest threat to the planes from such a collision between stars is the burst of radiation from them, which includes an X-ray afterglow they produce and gamma rays, as per the scientists.

“Ionizing radiation from these sources can be dangerous for life on Earth-like planets when located too close,” stated researchers, in the study. The possibilities of these events and how they will affect Earth were studied by scientists on the basis of an analysis of what we know is the first-ever neutron star collision detected, a stellar event called GW170817.

The researchers stated that any living thing which is present within the narrow range of around 297 light-years (97 parsecs) of such an explosion faces the possibility of getting burned by powerful gamma radiation.

Explosion can rip off Earth's stratospheric ozone

If the Earth was in such a zone, scientists stated that the stratospheric ozone may get stripped from the Earth due to the radiation, which may require some years to recover.

The scientists said that the x-rays from the afterglow of the kilonova are likely to be more lethal as they are likely to last longer than the gamma-ray emissions, adding that the life-destroying effects will remain within about 16 light years.

“For baseline kilonova parameters, we find that the X-ray emission from the afterglow may be lethal out to ∼5 pc and the off-axis gamma-ray emission may threaten a range out to ∼4 pc,” noted scientists.

“The greatest threat comes years after the explosion, from the cosmic rays accelerated by the kilonova blast, which can be lethal out to distances up to ∼ 11 pc,” they stated.

The study, however, cautioned that the findings have “significant uncertainties” and they will depend on the “viewing angle, ejected mass, and explosion energy”.

“The rarity of binary neutron star mergers combined with a small range of lethality means that they are probably not important threats to life on Earth. We find that the mean recurrence time of lethal mergers at the location of the Sun is much larger than the age of the Universe,” they stated.

Collision between rare stars in Milky Way to end life on Earth, says study

Astronomers have made a groundbreaking discovery, detecting the aftermath of a colossal planetary collision in a distant star system located 3,600 light-years away.

This remarkable moment, involving the violent merging of two massive icy planets, has resulted in the formation of a distinctive doughnut-shaped cloud composed of vaporised rock and water.

Discovering the cosmic clash

The findings of this discovery were made possible through the use of NASA spacecraft designed to monitor the skies for asteroids. This celestial collision is more than just a remarkable spectacle; it offers a unique opportunity to witness the birth of a new world in real-time and potentially unravel the mysteries of planet formation, as reported by the New Scientist.

A team of astronomers, brought together by the curiosity of one individual, embarked on this groundbreaking study after observing the peculiar behaviour of a star known as ASASSN-21 qj. This star, situated 3,600 light-years from Earth, exhibited a distinctive pattern, sparking the interest of scientists worldwide.

Matthew Kenworthy, a researcher at Leiden University and co-lead of the study, recounted the serendipitous discovery. He stated, "An astronomer on social media pointed out that the star brightened up in the infrared over a thousand days before the optical fading. I knew then this was an unusual event. To be honest, this observation was a complete surprise to me."

The team of astronomers diligently observed ASASSN-21 qj for an extended period, spanning two years, meticulously documenting how its brightness evolved over time. The culmination of their research was published in the journal Nature on October 11.

To comprehend the nature of the collision, Live Science reported that the planets involved in ASASSN-21 qj likely coalesced into a single celestial body following the impact. This assertion was substantiated by calculations and computer models. Simon Lock, a researcher at the University of Bristol and co-lead author, elaborated, "Our calculations and computer models indicate the temperature and size of the glowing material, as well as the amount of time the glow has lasted, is consistent with the collision of two ice giant exoplanets."

The team of astronomers continues to closely monitor ASASSN-21 qj and the remnants of the planetary collision. Over the forthcoming years, they anticipate the dispersal of the debris cloud along the orbit of the planets that were annihilated during the cataclysmic event.

Astronomers detect afterglow from collision of two giant planets in remote star system

Locals in Chicago were befuddled after a strange phenomenon resulted in death of at least 1000 birds from colliding into a single building. Media reports said that the number of dead birds was so large that ground appeared 'carpetted'. Volunteers had a lot on their hands as bird carcasses were strewn within 1.5 miles of McCormick Place. It is the largest convention center in North America. The structure is largely covered with glass.

“It’s the tip of an iceberg but it’s it’s a huge, huge amount of birds we found both dead and injured,” said Annette Prince, director of Chicago Bird Collision Monitors as quoted by The Guardian. She added that this was the highest number of bird strikes reported by the group on the grounds of one building in a single day.

From late Wednesday, October 4 through early Thursday, October 5, an estimated 1.5 million birds were in air over Chicago metropolitan area. Carcasses of birds like hermit thrush, American woodcocks, Tennessee warblers and more were found.

“Not every bird that hits the window is going to leave behind a body,” said Brendon Samuels as quoted by The Guardian. Samuels researches bird window collisions at University of Western Ontario.

“In fact, we often see birds collide with glass and they continue flying some distance away, seriously injured in ways that ultimately they won’t survive past a few hours,” Samuels added.

Deaths of birds in large numbers like this may occur when migration season is at its peak in spring and fall. Due to weather conditions like opposing wind, rain and and fog can make it tough for birds to find correct orientation. Light pollution in cities adds to their problems and may make them collide with structures.

“Anywhere you’ve got glass, you’re gonna have birds hitting the windows,” said Bryan Lenz of the American Bird Conservancy. He was quoted by The Guardian.

US: At least 1000 birds dead after collision with a Chicago building in a day

A teenager lost his life late on Wednesday (September 7), after a collision between his motorbike and police vehicle west of Paris, said the police sources.

The 16-year-old is reportedly accused of failing to comply with police officers, said a police source, further adding that he was being "followed at a distance" by a police car through Elancourt, a town around 30 kilometres (almost 20 miles) outside Paris.

He banged into "another police vehicle" at an intersection, the source added, as per news agency AFP reports.

The collision between the vehicles took place at around 6:40 pm (1640 GMT), said a second police source, according to AFP.

Prosecutors said that initially, the teenager was revived from respiratory and cardiac arrest by first responders and brought to the hospital, but later, he succumbed to the injuries that he sustained in the crash.

The prosecutors further added that they were investigating the allegations levelled against the deceased by the police and also the involuntary homicide at the wheel.

They also said that two police officers were held in custody pending a manslaughter probe and were being interrogated.

As per AFP reports, extra police force was deployed in Elancourt, a town of 25,000 people, to thwart any probable unrest.

Government spokesman Olivier Veran said the investigations would determine the "exact circumstances" of Wednesday's collision.

"Obviously I am calling for calm.... I am calling for restraint and careful consideration," he said on France Inter radio.

"Regardless of how dramatic a situation is, it needs answers that we do not yet have."

Wednesday's incident came almost a month after a 17-year-old boy was shot by a police officer in the Paris suburb of Nanterre for fleeing a traffic check which triggered massive riots in the country.

France witnessed a violent response from the police as hundreds of people were arrested and several police officers suffered wounds.

3 police officers charged over death of man during riots

In August, three police officers were charged over the death of a 27-year-old man in the southern French city of Marseille during nationwide riots.

Five officers were arrested over the incident out of which two were released quickly.

The 27-year-old who lost his life in the riots was identified as Bendriss, who was a married man and a father of one. His widow is now expecting a second child. As per reports, Bendriss died after feeling unwell while riding a scooter.

His postmortem showed traces on his chest, of what as per reports could be the impact of a shot from a blast ball, known in French as an LBD and commonly used by the country's police.

Prosecutors have said they consider it "probable" that the man's death was "caused by a violent impact to the thorax caused by the firing of a projectile of the blast ball type".

"Regardless of how dramatic a situation is, it needs answers that we do not yet have." Wednesday's incident came almost a month after a 17-year-old boy was shot by a police officer in the Paris suburb of Nanterre for fleeing a traffic check which triggered massive riots in the country. In a scenario straight out of a comic book, a tantalising method for striking fear into enemies has emerged. Picture this: two ancient stellar remnants violently converging right before your nemesis's eyes, resulting in a colossal explosion and a gamma-ray burst visible across the cosmos.

Such a spectacle would undoubtedly instil terror and obedience in all who witness it. While such extraordinary powers are confined to the realms of fiction, the real universe offers its own fascinating mechanisms for achieving this celestial spectacle, according to Science Alert.

All it takes is the convergence of these massive celestial objects, teetering on the brink of cosmic chaos, before they collide with a resounding "blam!"—a cosmic cataclysm visible billions of light-years away.

Astronomers decipher the origins of a spectacular event

On October 19, 2019, astronomers made a breakthrough as they identified the source of an event known as GRB 191019A. The initial clue was a long-lasting gamma-ray burst (GRB) lasting approximately one minute—an extended duration by GRB standards, although some have been observed to endure even longer. Detecting this burst promptly was the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory's mission.

Unveiling the stellar demise: A spectacular show in a distant galaxy

Months of meticulous observations using the International Gemini Observatory, the Nordic Optical Telescope, and the Hubble Space Telescope followed as astronomers studied the fading afterglow of the GRB source.

Their scrutiny unveiled a cosmic death scene located within the bustling core of a galaxy situated three billion light-years away.

Describing the spectacle as reminiscent of a demolition derby, astronomers discovered the collision of stellar remnants and stars swirling chaotically in proximity to the galaxy's central supermassive black hole.

Astonishingly, the GRB flash originated a mere 100 light-years away from the heart of the galaxy, positioned in close proximity to the central supermassive black hole.

Lead author Andrew Levan expressed his excitement, stating, "These new results show that stars can meet their demise in some of the densest regions of the Universe where they can be driven to collide." He further added, "This is exciting for understanding how stars die and for answering other questions, such as what unexpected sources might create gravitational waves that we could detect on Earth."

The event's uniqueness stems from its occurrence within an ancient galaxy, according to Levan.

Contrary to expectations, which associate such extraordinary fireworks with galaxies in their prime star-forming phase, this galaxy had already surpassed that stage. Most of its giant stars had succumbed to supernovae.

However, the galactic core proved to be the perfect setting for the collision of stellar remnants.

The central regions of many ancient galaxies harbour vast populations of stars, with estimates suggesting that over a million stars congregate within a space merely a few light-years wide.

Alongside these stars, one can find gas and dust clouds and a population of stellar remnants—black holes and neutron stars formed from the remnants of massive stars.

All these celestial objects orbit around the central supermassive black hole. With the gravitational influence of the black hole at play, it takes only a slight perturbation to bring two stellar objects, whether remnants or nearby stars, into close proximity.

In one moment, these objects gracefully dance in orbit, and in the next, they collide, unleashing an immense outburst that manifests as a long-duration GRB.

A Chinese military aircraft came in close proximity with the US jet over the South China Sea last week and forced the American jet to make unsafe evasive manoeuvres to avoid a collision, the US military said.

The incident is said to have taken place on December 21, when a Chinese Navy J-11 fighter jet came within 3 meters of US RC-135 aircraft, a US Air Force reconnaissance plane with about 30 people on board, the Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement on Thursday.

"We expect all countries in the Indo-Pacific region to use international airspace safely and in accordance with international law," it added.

The Indo-Pacific command is responsible for overseeing US military operations in the contested South China Sea region.

The US military claimed that the Chinese jet performed an “unsafe manoeuvre”, forcing the US jet to take evasive measures to avoid it. It also shared a video of the Chinese jet being in close proximity to the US recon aircraft.

A US military spokesperson told Reuters news agency that the Chinese jet came within 10 feet of the plane's wing, but 20 feet from its nose.

“The RC-135 was in international airspace over the South China Sea and was lawfully conducting routine operations,” the statement said.

The US has raised the issue through diplomatic and military channels through lines of communication with the Chinese government.

The wide, open Universe is filled with frenzied activity. Collisions of galaxies are one of the oft-seen phenomena. The idea of galaxies, comprising billions of stars, colliding with another galaxy appears horrific to imagine. We may think of loud boom, bangs just like in the movies.

But such collisions are often less eventful than universe-shattering drama we imagine in our minds. But there is a lot of tug-of-war involved when two galaxies collide. And depending upon which one packs more punch, a single galaxy may emerge victorious or the mishmash of stellar material may give rise to a wholly new galaxy.

But what Hubble Space Telescope has clicked has puzzled the scientists. A head-on collision of two galaxies has formed a weird-looking triangle shape in space.

So meet our two contenders in the ring. On the right in a spiral galaxy named NGC 2445. On the left is another spiral galaxy but with a name NGC 2445. Both of these galaxies are colliding. By the looks of it, scientists say that NGC 2444 (galaxy in left corner) is winning the tug-of-war and drawing material out of the right-hand side galaxy.

This has caused newly minted stars from the right-hand side galaxy to leave their places and get arranged in a starnge triangle shape. The triangle is still witnessing a star-birthing frenzy because the right-hand side galaxy has a lot of gas, a necessary fuel needed for birth of new stars.

But what puzzles the scientist is the triangle formed by the stars moving towards the right-hand side galaxy.

Astronomer Julianne Dalcanton of the Flatiron Institute’s Center for Computational Astrophysics in New York was quoted by NASA when he said that star-formation rings are formed quite commonly at the time of collisions between two galaxies. But this particular collision does not depict a 'ring' but a star-forming triangle. This, in her opinion, is 'weird'.

June 30 is observed as the annual Asteroid Day, marking the anniversary of most dangerous asteroid-related event to happen on Earth in the planet’s known history - the Tunguska impact over Siberia.

Asteroid Day aims to spread awareness about the dangers posed by cosmic entities to Earth and ways to protect the planet, its inhabitants, as well as to mitigate potential disaster events in the future.

The history of Asteroid Day

Co-founded by late genius Stephen Hawking and a varied pool of personalities like filmmaker Grigorij Richets and Queen’s guitarist Brian May, the declaration was signed by 200 astronauts, scientists, and artists including engineer and part-time TV presenter Bill Nye and the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins.

Officially known as the “100X Declaration”, the instrument has received 22,000 signatures from private citizens, all of whom are not necessarily specialists. The declaration calls for improving the discovery rate of asteroids to 100,000 per year, hoping to achieve a 100-fold increase over the next decade.

What are asteroids?

Asteroids are minor planets situated in the inner solar system. Large asteroids are sometimes called “planetoids”.

There are millions of asteroids in our solar system that hail from violent events in our solar system and bodies that never grew large enough to become planets. Most asteroids can be located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

Composed mainly of minerals and rocks, asteroids are often confused with comets, which are made of dust and ice. Owing the proximity to our Sun, asteroids lack any comet-like characteristics. To be classified as an asteroid, objects need to have a diameter larger than one metre.

The Tunguska event

On June 30, 1908 an explosion of celestial proportions took place near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Yeniseysk Governorate (now known as Krasnoyarsk Krai) in Russia. Due to its historical significance, June 30 is vastly known for the “Tunguska Event”.

In the aftermath of the explosion in the eastern Siberian Taiga, over 80 million trees spread across 2,150 square kilometres (830 square miles) of forest were flattened. According to archival eyewitness records, at least three people may have died in the event, although it's impossible to ascertain the real number.

Even though no impact crater was found, scientists remain confident that the disaster was caused by a stony object measuring upto 100 metres (330 feet), which is believed to have disintegrated at an altitude of 5-10 kilometres instead of directly hitting the Earth's surface.

Dangers posed by asteroids

According to B612 Foundation, which is a non-profit dedicated to planetary science especially on defence mechanisms against other objects in space, it’s certain that at some point in Earth’s life-cycle, it would be hit by an asteroid, but the foundation claims it’s still unsure when such a catastrophe would strike.

In his final book, Stephen Hawking had also referred to an asteroid collision as the biggest threat to planet Earth.

Major countries of the world are ill-prepared to tackle a potential collision. In a US Congress testimony in 2013, it was revealed that NASA would require almost five years of time to launch any mission requiring interception of an asteroid.

World Asteroid Day 2021: How prepared are we for a dangerous collision?

Two Taiwanese fighter jets crashed on Monday in the third such incident in the past half year, at a time when the Beijing-claimed island's armed forces are under increasing pressure to intercept Chinese aircraft on an almost daily basis.

While Taiwan's air force is well trained and well equipped, mostly with US-made equipment, it is dwarfed by China's. Beijing views the democratic island as its own territory and has never renounced the use of force to bring it under Chinese control.

Taiwan's air force said two air force F-5E fighters, each with one pilot aboard, crashed into the sea off the island's southeastern coast after they apparently collided in mid-air during a training mission.

One pilot was found and air-lifted to hospital by helicopter but later died, while the other is missing, air force Chief of Staff Huang Chih-wei told reporters, adding the aircraft were in good working order.

The air force has now grounded the F-5 fleet and suspended all training missions, he said.

The US-built F-5 fighters first entered service in Taiwan in the 1970s and have been mostly been retired from front-line activities, though some are still used for training and as a back-up for the main fleet.

Another F-5 crashed in October, killing the pilot. The following month a much more modern F-16 crashed off Taiwan's east coast, and the pilot of that aircraft also died.

In January of last year, Taiwan's top military official was among eight people killed after a helicopter carrying them to visit soldiers crashed in a mountainous area near the capital Taipei.

The incidents have raised concern about both training and maintenance, but also the pressure the air force is under to respond to repeated Chinese flights near the island.

Taiwan's Defence Ministry has warned Chinese aircraft, including drones, are flying repeatedly in Taiwan's air defence identification zone, seeking to wear out Taiwan's air force.

Taiwan loses two fighter jets in collision, third crash in six months

A collision between a bus and a train killed at least 17 people on Sunday. The accident took place about 50 kilometres east of Bangkok. Number of casualties is expected to rise. The bus passengers were on their way to a temple in Chachoengsao province.

"The death toll we have so far is 17," a police officer told AFP. The accident occured around 8 am local time (0100 GMT). Provincial governor said that about 29 people were injured.

Early images by rescue workers showed gnarled metal and debris, with bodies lying by the train tracks and people's belongings scattered.

The bus overturned on its side and the top of it was ripped off.

Such deadly accidents are common in Thailand, which regularly tops lists of the world's most lethal roads, with speeding, drunk driving and weak law enforcement all contributing factors.

According to a 2018 report by the World Health Organization, Thailand has the second-highest traffic fatality rate in the world.

Though a majority of the victims are motorcyclists, bus crashes involving groups of tourists and migrant labourers often grab headlines.

In March 2018, at least 18 people were killed and dozens wounded when a bus carrying people returning from holiday in northeastern Thailand swerved off the road and smashed into a tree.

Thailand: Collision between bus and train claims 17 lives

Four people were killed and one was missing after a tourist plane and a microlight aircraft collided in western France on Saturday.

The small microlight carrying two people collided with a DA40 tourist plane with three people onboard around 4:30pm (1430 GMT) in Loches in the Indre-et-Loire department.

Four bodies were recovered from the microlight and the larger plane. The larger plane had crashed into a tree in an area that was difficult to reach.

An eyewitness said she had heard a "big crash" while outside in her courtyard with her husband. The pair saw a man fall tens of metres (yards) from the larger plane into a field as the aircraft skimmed nearby rooftops.

A 75-year-old was piloting the plane with two passengers aged 28 and 30, while a 66-year-old was at the controls of the microlight with a passenger aged 50. None of the people involved in the crash were related.

Around 50 firefighters were called out following the crash, while 30 police officers set up road detours around the two crash sites. The causes of the collision remain unclear.

Some suggest that the blinding late afternoon sunlight could have dazzled one of the pilots.

Collisions between microlights and other aircraft are rare, although an August 2019 crash between a microlight and a helicopter over the Spanish island of Mallorca killed seven including two minors.

Two packed trains rammed into each other in Bangladesh on Tuesday, killing at least 16 people and injuring nearly 60 others, police said.

Three coaches were sent crashing off the tracks at Mondobhag station in the town of Kasba when a Dhaka-bound train and a locomotive bound for Chittagong collided.

"At least 16 people have been killed. And another 58 were injured. We have sent the injured to different hospitals in the region," local police chief Anisur Rahman told AFP.

Cranes and other lifting gear were brought in to rescue trapped passengers, many of whom were asleep when the early morning crash took place.

"There was a loud noise, then I saw the train was completely ripped apart," one injured passenger told Somoy TV.

"All the people around me were crying. There was blood everywhere. Some people had broken hands and legs," another told the broadcaster.

"My son was with me. I still don't know what happened to him," the man added.

Hayat Ud Doula Khan, a government official in the district, said the Dhaka-bound Turna Nishitha train, hit the Chittagong-bound Udayan Express at about 3:00 am as the Udayan was about to go through Mondobhog station.

Khan told AFP that the Turna Nishitha should have waited outside the station to let the other train pass and that an investigation had been started. A Bangladesh railway official told reporters faulty signals could be to blame.

"Three coaches were badly mangled and the victims are from these coaches," Khan said, adding that train services out of Dhaka had been halted because of the accident.

Train accidents are common in Bangladesh and are often caused by poor signalling or other rundown infrastructure.

According to the Shipping and Communication Reporters Forum (SCRF), a private media research group, between January 1 and June 30 this year, at least 202 rail accidents took place in the South Asian country of 168 million people where some of the track is a century old.

In June, a train plunged into a canal after the bridge it was crossing gave way. Five people were killed and 100 injured.

The SCRF said pedestrians using mobile phones while crossing tracks, negligence by railway employees and poor maintenance of lines and bridges were the main cause of crashes.

At least 87 passengers in a high-speed ferry were injured in an apparent collision with a marine animal in the sea of Japan on Saturday, coastguards and media said.

Five people were seriously injured in the accident, which occurred just before the hydrofoil was due to arrive on Sado island after a short trip from the mainland, the Japan Coast Guard said.

It is likely the ferry hit a whale, as both humpbacks and minkes are often found in the area, public broadcaster NHK quoted a marine wildlife expert as saying.

"It was a huge impact," a passenger told public broadcaster NHK. "One person was bleeding."

There was damage to the back of the vessel, local media said, but the ferry -- with 121 passengers and four crew on board -- reached its destination without outside help, local media said.

Kushinagar accident: PM Modi 'extremely saddened', Rajnath Singh, Yogi Adityanath offer condolences

An Iranian oil tanker burst into flames from end to end and sank Sunday, eight days after it caught fire following a collision with a cargo ship off China, state media said.

Earlier, a Tehran official said there was no hope of saving some 30 missing crewmen before the ship sank, amid concern over an oil spill as Chinese officials played down fears of a major environmental disaster.

The Sanchi, carrying 136,000 tonnes of light crude oil from Iran, had been burning since colliding with the CF Crystal, a Hong Kong-registered bulk freighter, on January 6.

At around midday Sunday the ship "suddenly ignited", with the entire vessel burning fiercely and a pall of smoke between 800 and 1,000 metres (2,625 and 3,280 feet) high, China's transport ministry said, releasing dramatic pictures of the entire vessel obscured by thick black smoke.

The ship later sank, the official news agency Xinhua cited the State Oceanic Administration as saying.

"There is no hope of finding survivors among the members of the crew," Mohammad Rastad, spokesman for the Iranian rescue team dispatched to Shanghai, told Iran's state broadcaster in Tehran before the tanker went down.

Rastad said information from members of the Crystal crew suggested all the personnel on the Sanchi died in the first hour of the accident "due to the explosion and the release of gas".

"Despite our efforts, it has not been possible to extinguish the fire and recover the bodies due to repeated explosions and gas leaks," he said.

The Sanchi, which had been headed to South Korea to deliver its cargo, had a crew of 32 -- 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis. Only three bodies have been recovered.

Scenes of anger and grief erupted in Tehran as news of the deaths reached dozens of family, friends and colleagues of the crew, who were waiting desperately for information about their loved ones at the National Iranian Tanker Company headquarters.

Labour Minister Ali Rabiei was shown crying on state television as he tried to comfort the wife of one crewman, telling her to "hold your child close and be strong".

- 'Minimal human impact' -
Chinese rescuers had on Saturday recovered the tanker's "black box", the transport ministry said, without specifying exactly what had been retrieved.

A reporter with China's state television CCTV aboard a plane from the State Oceanic Administration reported seeing wreckage from the Sanchi, oil on fire, and spilled fuel covering a 10-square-kilometre (3.9-square-mile) area.

"The oil spill situation is very serious," CCTV quoted the reporter as saying on social media.

But the television channel earlier also cited Zhang Yong, a senior engineer with the State Oceanic Administration, as playing down fears of a spill.

"Because this is a light crude oil spill, relatively speaking it has a much smaller impact than other oil spills, because this kind of oil is especially volatile -– most of it has entered the atmosphere, so it's had less impact on the ocean", Zhang was quoted as saying.

"This area should be considered the open sea, very far from places where people live, so the human impact should be minimal."

Rescue efforts had been particularly difficult because at 89 degrees Celsius, the vessel's compartments were too hot for workers to withstand for long, CCTV quoted He Wang, an expert from Chinese oil company Huade Petrochemical, as saying.
