Kevin McCarthy, the US House of Representatives speaker said the lawmakers were moving ahead to address the national security concerns posed by the app, alleging that the Chinese government had access to users' data.&nbsp;

“The House will be moving forward with legislation to protect Americans from the technological tentacles of the Chinese Communist Party,” tweeted&nbsp;McCarthy.&nbsp;

While the legislation has largely received bipartisan support, Democrat leader&nbsp;Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to TikTok to post a lengthy monologue where she protested against the ban saying it was an 'unprecedented' move in the history of the United States.

Citing TikTok as a 'high risk' security concern, the Joe Biden administration has demanded that the Chinese owner of the app sell their stake or risk getting banned.&nbsp;

Russia and China have topped the list of countries that registered the highest trade surplus in 2022, according to a report by the national statistical services of both countries, reports state-owned RT news.

China positioned itself as the top among the major economies as its surplus trade grew by 30 per cent last year to an all-time high of $877.6 billion.

It exported nearly $3.59 trillion worth of goods—a growth in export value of about 7 per cent compared to the last year. While imports surged only by 1.1 per cent to roughly $2.72 trillion.

Russia was placed second as its surplus increased by 1.7 times over the year to a record $333.4 billion. The country’s total exports reached $591.4 billion, up 19.9 per cent from 2021.

According to the data, energy sales constituted the bulk of Russia's foreign exports, reaching $383.73 billion—a 42.8 per cent year-on-year increase. Imports, however, slid 11.7 per cent to $259.1 billion compared to the previous year.

The report notes the impact of Western sanctions on Russia, and President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to promote self-sufficiency and import substitution measures on dwindling imports.

Saudi Arabia positioned itself third after registering its highest trade surplus since 2012 at $221.3 billion, followed by Norway, Australia and Qatar.

According to the Sputnik news agency, 26 major economies recorded a trade surplus of $2.45 trillion in 2022, compared to 32 countries with $2.1 trillion a year earlier.

The only country that managed to move from a trade deficit to a surplus last year was Nigeria.

Whereas, Germany saw its figure drop 2.4 times to $85.34 billion, slipping to the seventh spot from the second place a year earlier.

The data was presented by the national statistical agencies of the world's 60 largest economies. Sputnik and RT conducted a study based on this data.

Taiwan on Thursday (March 23) recalled its ambassador to Honduras over a visit by the&nbsp; Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina to China. In a statement, Taiwan's foreign ministry said that Honduras ignored more than 80 years of friendship when it sent its foreign minister to China, which seriously damaged the feelings of Taiwan's government and its people.&nbsp;"We have decided to immediately recall our ambassador in Honduras to express our strong dissatisfaction," the statement said as reported by the news agency AFP.&nbsp;

Taiwan's response comes as Honduran Foreign Minister Reina was heading to China to hold discussions on the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Chinese government.&nbsp;

Reina is accompanied by lawmaker Xiomara Zelaya, the daughter of President Iris Xiomara Castro Sarmiento, three government and diplomatic officials told AFP on Thursday. The Honduran delegation will meet Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang. However, Beijing has not confirmed the visit.

China has claimed democratically governed Taiwan as part of its territory to be retaken one day — by force, if necessary. Under Beijing's "One China" principle, no country may maintain official diplomatic relations with both China and Taiwan. Taipei also maintains a somewhat similar policy and has cut ties with countries that switched recognition to Beijing.&nbsp;

Last week, Honduran President Castro ordered Foreign Minister Reina to establish diplomatic relations with China, a move which was severely criticised by Taiwan. Reina had said that economic necessity and Taiwan's refusal to increase financial aid to Honduras were behind the decision to establish ties with Beijing.

If Honduras does formally switch recognition, it would leave Taiwan with just 13 countries with which it has formal diplomatic ties.&nbsp;

"I will be frank, we are in a rather difficult situation. We are still trying our best, and we will do our best to the last minute. But we will not accept any unreasonable request, from Honduras or any other country, especially if they are opaque," Wu said, AFP reported.&nbsp;

Starting next week, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen will visit diplomatic allies Guatemala and Belize and she would be stopping in New York and Los Angeles.&nbsp;

Taiwan recalls ambassador to Honduras over its foreign minister’s China visit

Taiwan’s Former President Ma Ying-jeou will visit China later this month, said his office on Sunday (March 19). The move will mark the first time that a former or current Taiwanese leader has visited since the defeated Republic of China government fled to the island in 1949. Notably, the Republic of China remains Taiwan’s official name.&nbsp;

The visit, which will take place between March 27 and April 7, also comes amid a rise in tensions between Beijing and Taipei. Ma who is also a senior member of Kuomintang (KMT) the opposition party in Taiwan has traditionally favoured China but has vehemently denied being ‘pro-Beijing’.&nbsp;

Notably, Ma also held a landmark meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Singapore in late 2015 shortly before incumbent Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen was elected. This also comes amid KMT seemingly increasing its engagement with China since both Beijing and Taipei have eased Covid-related restrictions.&nbsp;

Last month, the deputy chairman of the opposition party, Andrew Hsia visited Beijing and met senior Communist Party leader Wang Huning. The visit garnered significant criticism from Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which accused KMT of being too close to Beijing and wanting to sell out Taiwan.&nbsp;

During his visit, Ma will visit five cities Nanjing, Wuhan, Changsha, Chongqing and Shanghai, said his office, as per Reuters. The former Taiwanese president will also reportedly meet students and visit sites connected to World War II, the second Sino-Japanese War, and the 1911 revolution which overthrew the last Chinese emperor and led to the beginning of the Republic of China, said Ma’s office.&nbsp;

However, it is not clear if the former Taiwanese president will meet any Chinese officials or leaders including Xi. KMT has previously argued that it is important to keep open communication with China given the current tensions.&nbsp;

Beijing has declined to hold talks with Tsai accusing her of being a “separatist”. Tsai who was first elected president of Taiwan in 2016 has previously said that only Taiwan’s people can decide their future and rejected China’s claim on Taipei.&nbsp;

This comes as Beijing continues to maintain its military and political pressure for democratically-elected Taiwan to accept Chinese sovereignty and reiterated calls for reunification with the self-governing island.

The top three best-performing sales managers received five million yuan (US$737,000) each, whereas 30 others got at least one million yuan, the Jiemian News reported citing an unnamed manager from the company’s public relations department.

“We held a sales year-end meeting on the night of January 17, giving 61 million yuan in total to 40 sales managers,” the person was quoted as saying.

Hong Kong to end most Covid rules apart from mandatory mask wearing

The global airline industry may report an estimated $6.9 billion in loss this year, said the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which is lower than previous estimates and significantly lesser than the loss reported in 2020 and 2021. In a first since 2019, the global airlines’ body also expects a small industry-wide profit for the upcoming year.&nbsp;

Notably, the loss estimated for 2022 has been reduced from $9.7 billion in June to $6.9, on Tuesday, which the IATA has attributed to an increased number of passengers and cost control by airlines amid a rise in fuel prices. Furthermore, they also expect a small industry-wide profit of $4.7 billion in 2023 with more than four billion passengers set to fly.&nbsp;

“That is a great achievement considering the scale of the financial and economic damage caused by government-imposed pandemic restrictions,” said the IATA Director-General Willie Walsh referring to the projected profit. This comes after the global airline industry reported massive losses in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

The global grouping of at least 290 airlines across the world, accounting for nearly 89 per cent of global air traffic, has also warned about how fragile this recovery is given that some airlines might continue to struggle with regulations, high costs and government policies.&nbsp;

“It's very important that everybody understands just how fragile the recovery is.&nbsp;Yes we are recovering; yes the momentum is improving; yes, we expect it to continue to improve in 2023” said Walsh.&nbsp;According to the IATA, the overall passenger yields are expected to grow by 8.4 per cent while the passenger revenues may increase to $438 billion. 
 
In 2023, the passenger demand which is an estimated 59.8 per cent is expected to surpass the capacity growth of 47.8 per cent, said the IATA referring to the Asia Pacific region which has witnessed a significant setback due to China’s zero-Covid policy and its impact on travel.&nbsp;

It added that if Beijing does not ease restrictions it could affect airlines' profitability for the upcoming year. However, another risk looming over the slightly positive outlook for 2023 may be the risk of some economies falling into recession, said the IATA. Notably, in 2021 the global airlines’ industry reported a loss of $42 billion and a $137.7 billion loss in 2020.&nbsp;

It’s mainly because of poor vaccines. China didn’t import vaccines from other nations and kept using its own vaccines with low efficacy. The India-China border standoff has been ongoing for more than two years. In an attempt to keep up with the enemy and remain prepared for any eventuality at any time, the Indian Army has come up with a major infrastructure build-up plan.&nbsp;

Reportedly, the Indian Army will be constructing modular, 3D-printed next-generation bunkers to provide additional protection to the troops in the Ladakh sector of the country, along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

According to reports, the structure will be strong enough to withstand a&nbsp;direct hit from a T-90 tank from mere 100 metres. The officials associated with the matter added that bunkers have undergone extensive trials in the western sector (Rajasthan) and eastern Ladakh.

China has decided on "coercion and making life difficult in a variety of ways on Taiwan in the hopes that that would speed reunification, but also holding out the possibility, if that didn't work, of using force to achieve their goals," Blinken said.

The USS Zumwalt – one of the most advanced surface warships in the United States Navy – was sent to the western Pacific region and&nbsp;it reached Tokyo on Monday. With tensions flaring between China and Taiwan, this was seen as a show of power by the US who may deploy hypersonic missiles to the region.

According to CNN, the USS Zumwalt belongs to a class of multi-mission guided missile destroyers that the Navy believes will “create a new level of battlespace complexity for potential adversaries.”

Currently, the USS Zumwalt is “the largest and most technologically advanced surface combatant in the world” and at 185 meters long, it is larger than any Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

The Pentagon is also looking to upgrade the warship by adding the latest Common Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HCB) weapons system in the future. The weapons system fires missiles at hypersonic speed by the use of booster rocket motor, according to the latest memo published by the US Navy.

“The C-HGB is intended to be able to destroy targets by virtue of its velocity alone,” the report said.

The weapons system fires missiles at hypersonic speed by the use of booster rocket motor, according to the latest memo published by the US Navy. “The C-HGB is intended to be able to destroy targets by virtue of its velocity alone,” the report said.
