A woman was found dead inside baggage-processing machinery at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, United States on Thursday (Aug 8). The spokesperson of the Chicago fire department, Larry Langford said firefighters were called to the airport at about 7:45 am (local time) following a report of a person found entangled in a conveyor belt system in a baggage room.

Police said that the woman was 57 years old, but didn’t reveal her name.

The baggage room where the woman was found entangled was not publicly accessible, as per Langford, though the authorities did not know how the woman reached there. Scott Allen, a spokesperson for the US Department of Labor, said an official with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) visited the scene and learned the woman was not an airport employee.

Firefighters turned the scene over to police investigators, and Langford had no more details.

The Chicago police department’s communications office, on the other hand, said in an email to the Associated Press that the woman was found unresponsive and pronounced dead on the scene. The investigation is currently underway, the office said.

The police initially said the woman was discovered at 2:27 am (local time), creating confusion about why firefighters and paramedics did not arrive on time. The concerned authorities arrived five hours after the incident.

After checking with the police department about the timing, Langford said that he was told surveillance footage showed the woman walking in the baggage room at 2:27 am (local time), but she was discovered at 7:30 am (local time), prompting a 911 call.

Donald J. Trump, the former president, is in hot water over his Chicago tower's taxes. The IRS, the tax authority, said he might owe over $100 million, as uncovered by The New York Times and ProPublica. Trump claimed his tower was "worthless" for tax reasons, but now the IRS says he might have been too tricky with his taxes.

Trump's big tower in Chicago was supposed to be a success, but it ended up losing a lot of money because of high costs and the recession. When Trump tried to get some money back through taxes, the IRS said he did it wrong.

Double trouble: Writing off losses twice

In 2008, Trump said his tower was a loss and claimed a big tax break. Then in 2010, he tried to get even more money back from the IRS. But the IRS thinks he tried to get money twice for the same problem.

The IRS is now looking into Trump's taxes very closely. If they find he owes money, it could be a huge problem for him. This has been going on for a while, and it's still not clear what will happen.

Tax experts think Trump might have tried to play games with the tax system. If he loses this fight, it could change how taxes work for other people too.

Chicago is reeling from the release of shocking body cam footage revealing the deadly aftermath of a routine traffic stop in which officers of Chicago police fired a staggering 96 shots at 26-year-old Dexter Reed, killing him.

Excessive force

Amid a fierce debate over the use of excessive force, the preliminary inquiry, as per CNN, suggests that the driver opened fire on the officers first. However, his family and attorneys have questioned why multiple plain-clothed officers swarmed his car with guns drawn, firing a barrage of bullets at him.

The fatal incident unfolded in Chicago's Garfield Park neighbourhood on March 21 and has since raised troubling questions about police conduct and accountability.

Newly revealed bodycam recordings, made public on Tuesday (Apr 9) by Chicago's Civilian Office of Police Accountability, paint a vivid and unsettling picture of the encounter.

In one video, an officer wearing a hooded jacket, a baseball cap and a tactical vest with a badge on it can be heard repeatedly instructing Reed to lower his window as the tension escalates. Footage also shows multiple officers drawing their firearms, demanding that Reed unlock his doors.

However, moments later, chaos erupts as dozens of shots are fired at Reed in rapid succession.

Once the gunfire subsides, the 26-year-old can be seen lying motionless face down behind his vehicle. An officer can be heard claiming, "He started shooting at us," as another examines Reed's car and discovers a firearm inside.

"The gun's right there," says the officer, shining a flashlight into the car.

An officer was shot in the wrist during the altercation, and was hospitalised in good condition, said the Chicago police.

Spiralling into chaos

What began as a routine traffic stop, reportedly for a seatbelt violation, quickly spiralled into a deadly confrontation.

According to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, "Preliminary reports indicate that this incident began when five Chicago Police officers assigned to an 11th District tactical unit engaged in a traffic stop of Dexter Reed, Jr. for purportedly not wearing a seatbelt".

In response, officers discharged their weapons approximately 96 times in just 41 seconds, resulting in Reed's tragic demise.

"Upon stopping Mr Reed, multiple officers surrounded his vehicle while giving verbal commands. When Mr Reed did not comply with these commands, officers pointed their firearms at Mr Reed and ultimately there was an exchange of gunfire which left Mr Reed dead and an officer shot in the forearm," added the agency responsible for investigating allegations of police misconduct and all police shootings.

The release of the bodycam footage has sparked outrage and renewed scrutiny of police tactics. Reed's family and their legal team have condemned the officers' actions, questioning the need for such a forceful response to a minor traffic violation.

"Dexter was pulled over for failing to wear his seat belt. Now this leaves many, many questions," said their attorney Steven Hart.

"Why were tactical officers jumping out of an unmarked police car with their guns drawn for a simple traffic violation of not wearing a seatbelt?" he asked.

"After he was shot up … you added clips to your gun? That is nothing but plain murder to me," said Reed's uncle Roosevelt Banks.

The police department in a statement said that the shooting is under investigation, while the Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx said that it is their job to determine whether the officers will face criminal charges.

"Our Law Enforcement Accountability Division – also called LEAD – will carefully examine the totality of the circumstances and determine whether the force used here by the officers was warranted or constitute grounds for criminal charges."

An eight-week-old sea otter pup was found alone in October in dire conditions in the remote town of Seldovia, Alaska. The Pup EL2306 was malnourished and was brought to the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward.

Now, he is in the nursery at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, which is one of only a few facilities in the United States with the resources to care for rescued otters. It arrived in Chicago at the end of November.

Alaska SeaLife Center contacted the aquarium and the aquarium's otter team travelled cross-country with the otter.

As quoted by the news agency, Lana Gonzalez, a manager of penguins and otters at Shedd, said: "Caring for a little otter pup is just like caring for an infant," including round-the-clock feeding.

Gonzalez added, "He also needs to get groomed. Sea otters have a very dense coat — there's anywhere from 700,000 to a million hairs per square inch, and that's what they use to keep themselves warm. They don't have a thick layer of blubber or fat like other marine mammals do, so taking care of that coat is very important."

Otter babies learn lessons from their mothers, especially about grooming. Since Pup EL2306 was found alone, the aquarium team helped it by acting in the place of its mother. The team encourages the pup's healthy development.

US: At least 15 shot dead at Halloween party in Chicago

Locals in Chicago were befuddled after a strange phenomenon resulted in death of at least 1000 birds from colliding into a single building. Media reports said that the number of dead birds was so large that ground appeared 'carpetted'. Volunteers had a lot on their hands as bird carcasses were strewn within 1.5 miles of McCormick Place. It is the largest convention center in North America. The structure is largely covered with glass.

“It’s the tip of an iceberg but it’s it’s a huge, huge amount of birds we found both dead and injured,” said Annette Prince, director of Chicago Bird Collision Monitors as quoted by The Guardian. She added that this was the highest number of bird strikes reported by the group on the grounds of one building in a single day.

From late Wednesday, October 4 through early Thursday, October 5, an estimated 1.5 million birds were in air over Chicago metropolitan area. Carcasses of birds like hermit thrush, American woodcocks, Tennessee warblers and more were found.

“Not every bird that hits the window is going to leave behind a body,” said Brendon Samuels as quoted by The Guardian. Samuels researches bird window collisions at University of Western Ontario.

“In fact, we often see birds collide with glass and they continue flying some distance away, seriously injured in ways that ultimately they won’t survive past a few hours,” Samuels added.

Deaths of birds in large numbers like this may occur when migration season is at its peak in spring and fall. Due to weather conditions like opposing wind, rain and and fog can make it tough for birds to find correct orientation. Light pollution in cities adds to their problems and may make them collide with structures.

“Anywhere you’ve got glass, you’re gonna have birds hitting the windows,” said Bryan Lenz of the American Bird Conservancy. He was quoted by The Guardian.

It showed the victim walking down a residential alleyway in Bucktown in the afternoon while eating a slice of pizza when two men ran up to him from behind and attacked him with a punch to his head. As soon as he fell next to the chain-link fence, the attackers began to rain blows on him with their fists and feet. The victim screamed and tried to resist. However, the fight split across the alley. He managed to bring one of the attackers to the ground but the other began stomping him with his feet. A car across the street blared its horn to warn and distract the attackers. Eventually, they snatched the victim's bag and cell phone and delivered a violent stomp before walking away calmly. Despite some bruising, the victim seemed okay. Later, Chicago police informed the New York Post that they transported the victim to a hospital where he was in stable condition. They have assigned five investigators to the case. However, they haven't identified the suspects yet. 💥BREAKING:💥 BRUTAL attack in Chicago. Robbery? Assault? Racial? Circumstantial? What's your take?? pic.twitter.com/lgwnHeHqVN — Dustin (@Draynick86) September 26, 2023 × The savage attack is an example of the rampant crime in the city. According to the data from Chicago Police Department, there was a 29 per cent rise in crime, including murder, sexual assault, robbery, theft and aggravated battery, so far this year, compared to 2022. The data also mentioned that robberies in the city were up by 24 per cent in 2023 compared to last year. The city saw a staggering 54 per cent increase in major crime. A day after the violent Bucktown robbery, the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee visited Chicago to hear the testimony on how developed policies have scorned the crime epidemic. The victims of violent crimes in the city, politicians and law enforcement agents testified in front of the committee. "With all the policies and procedures put into place, officers find themselves with their hands tied behind their back," testified Carlos Yanez Jr., a retired Chicago cop who was shot four times during a traffic stop, and his partner, Ella French, was killed, WLS reported. "Officers continue to lap up violent offenders, but we find them back on the street committing even more violent crimes, including murder," he added. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

US: A couple, 2 children and 3 dogs found shot to death in Chicago home, killer at large

Here, we bring you the news that is trending across WION's social media platforms - A Chicago television team covering a spate of thefts was held up at gunpoint by three men in ski masks in an ironic turn of events. The event took place in Chicago's West Town neighborhood on Monday, August 28, just before 5 a.m.

Chicago news crew reporting on robberies gets robbed

A three-year-old child riding on one of US states Texas’ migrant buses died, said the officials on Friday (August 11) which is the first death reported by the state since it began its controversial measure of shuttling thousands of refugees and migrants from the United States-Mexico border last year.

What do we know?

The child’s death was confirmed by Texas officials, in a statement, but no other details about where the child was from or why they became ill were immediately released by the authorities. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, the child was three years old and died Thursday in Marion County, in the southern part of the US state.

The officials in the state of Illinois said that they are working with the health officials, state police and federal authorities to the “fullest extent possible to get answers in this tragic situation.”

“Every loss of life is a tragedy,” said the Texas Division of Emergency Management, in a statement. It added, “Once the child presented with health concerns, the bus pulled over and security personnel on board called 911 for emergency attention.”

A report by the American media outlet CBS News reported that the toddler was a girl from Venezuela. According to the Texas officials, the child received treatment from paramedics and later died at a hospital.

Texas officials said that the temperature of all passengers was taken and they were also asked about any medical conditions. The bus departed from the Texas border city of Brownsville and was heading for Chicago, Illinois.

Operation Lone Star

As a part of Texas’ Republican Governor Greg Abbott’s sprawling mission on the border, called Operation Lone Star, the state has bused more than 30,000 migrants to Democratic-controlled cities across the US since 2022.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden’s administration is also suing the state for the wrecking ball-sized buoys placed on the Rio Grande, earlier this year, which pose environmental and humanitarian concerns.

The so-called operation has also come under scrutiny amid recent reports of Texas officials separating some migrant families on the border. When asked about the toddler’s death, US Representative Henry Cuellar, a Democrat whose district includes the Texas border said he was unaware about the incident.

“You can’t use the migrants as political pawns. You still got to be accountable to taking care of them, especially if you're transporting kids,” said Cuellar. He also criticised Abbott and said that the Texas governor should work with the federal government on border security.

As a part of this so-called operation, Texas has also sent buses to Washington, New York, Philadelphia, Denver and Los Angeles. In June, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the buses a “despicable stunt” by Abbott after 42 people, including some children, were dropped off in the California city.

Scientists in the United States of America have issued a warning saying that downtown Chicago is sinking and that too due to subsurface heat Islands or underground climate change. The city is facing a threat that could soon become existential scientists are calling this phenomenon underground climate change. This basically leads to a shifting of land under cities. More in our next report take a look.

Study: Underground heat is shifting Chicago's foundations

The ground underneath the Chicago city is gradually deforming due to “underground climate change”, scientists are claiming.

According to the latest study, this phenomenon is called “subsurface heat islands” and is caused by heat released by buildings and subterranean transportation such as subway systems.

The research argues that rising temperatures are causing land to undergo massive changes in urban areas and that it could adversely affect buildings and infrastructure, threatening long-term durability.

“The denser the city, the more intense is underground climate change,” said lead study author Alessandro Rotta Loria, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, reports CNN.

He said that soil, rocks and construction materials are being impacted by temperature variations.

For example, the ground underneath buildings can contract when heated, causing unwanted settlement, Loria said.

“Deformations caused by underground climate change are relatively small in magnitude, but they continuously develop,” he said.

“Over time, they can become very significant for the operational performance of civil infrastructure like building foundations, water retaining walls, tunnels and so on.”

New York was also found to be sinking

Notably, it comes after scientists announced New York may be sinking under the weight of its own buildings back in May —with 1.68 trillion pounds pushing down on the ground beneath.

The study, which was published this month in the Communications Engineering journal, came to the conclusion after observing the land changes for the past 25 years.

The researchers installed 150 temperature sensors across the Chicago Loop district, both above and below ground, and in a variety of places such as basements, tunnels and parking garages.

Sensors were also placed in Grant Park along Lake Michigan to compare temperatures from an unbuilt area with no excess heat coming from construction or transportation.

The data that was collected for the last three years showed that the ground under the Loop was up to 18 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) warmer than the ground beneath the park.

“And the consequence of that is that at least a portion of the heat will diffuse towards the ground over time, and that’s the origin of the phenomenon,” Loria said.

Loria notes that underground climate change can cause issues such as groundwater contamination or problems with underground railways by making tracks prone to buckling or causing passengers to become ill due to excessive heat.
