Three people were wounded and one person was arrested following a shooting Saturday at an automotive interior products warehouse in suburban Chicago, as reported by AP.

Bolingbrook police responded about 6:25 a.m. to reports of the shooting at the WeatherTech facility, Capt. Anthony Columbus told WLS-TV.

In a statement, the Bolingbrook Police Department said one person died, another victim is in critical condition, and the third person wounded has been released from an area hospital.&nbsp;

Officials confirmed the shootings and the number of people injured but did not release information on their conditions or the extent of their wounds, according to WGN-TV.

The suspected shooter fled the building, but was found about 9:25 a.m. and taken into custody, police said.

According to CBS Chicago, Illinois senator Eric Mattson issued a statement saying, "My heart goes out to the victims and their families, and I pray that the three people who've been shot will recover. While much remains to be learned about the perpetrator, what's clear is that this individual should not have had a gun because they were not mentally fit to be a responsible gun owner.&nbsp;

President Joe Biden on Saturday signed into law the first significant federal bill on gun safety in decades, saying that while it falls short of what's really needed it will "save lives."

"While this bill doesn't do everything I want, it does include actions I've long called for that are going to save lives," he said at the White House before leaving for two major diplomatic summits in Europe, as reported by AFP.

According to Chicago police spokesperson Tom Ahern, "Last night about 11 o'clock, some around there, we heard gun shots in rapid succession, about 12 of them."

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that those who have been wounded were taken to local hospitals in "serious to critical condition."

In order to address "long-standing concerns along that block," Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot promised to take additional steps.

It comes after a racist mass shooting at a supermarket in New York state in which 10 African American people were killed while a Chinese immigrant padlocked a church and opened fire on its Taiwanese American congregation in an apparent hate attack.

A deadly shooting had taken place in Chicago's Millennium Park last weekend in which teenagers were involved after which Lightfoot had banned unaccompanied minors from the park after 6 pm Thursday through Sunday.

Chicago Police superintendent David Brown said that an officer had shot a 13-year-old boy who was suspected of having taken part in a carjacking and the incident is being investigated by the city's Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA).&nbsp;

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, several cities in the United States have witnessed a surge of deadly violence.

The proliferation of so-called "ghost guns", which can be assembled at home and are virtually impossible to trace, is one of the major reasons behind the rise in gun crime other than the social dislocation caused by the pandemic according to experts.

Keith Taylor, a gun violence expert at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, told AFP "Unless the United States really works on getting a consistent process in place to regulate, license, and monitor gun ownership, you're going to continue to have these types of incidents and they will increase."

According to the website of the Gun Violence Archive, over 45,000 Americans died from guns in 2021. In 2019, more than 39,000 had died from gun violence.

A 44-year-old Chicago man, who was wrongly jailed for murder, was released after 20 years after his twin brother confessed to the crime.

Kevin Dugar was finally released from Cook County Jail, in Chicago on Wednesday.

His brother Karl Smith confessed to the crime in a letter to Dugar in 2013, saying that his brother was not responsible for the 2003 gang-related crime.

Smith is already serving a 99-year sentence for a violent home invasion in which a child was shot in the head.

After being convicted for the home invasion, he claimed that he found God in prison and had to make things right.

In 2018, a judge refused to accept Smith's confession saying that it was not credible. The judge also denied Dugar a new trial, reported ABC news.

Smith even signed a sworn statement and contacted Dugar's lawyers, as per his brother's request. But Dugar was still denied a retrial or release.&nbsp;

But the Northwest Center of Wrongful Convictions appealed Dugar's case. After another judge reviewed it, an order was issued on Tuesday morning for Dugar’s release.

Up until eighth grade, the twins dressed alike and shared socks, shoes and even sandwiches, their mother said in 2016, and were often viewed as “one person”, the Daily Mail reported.

Smith even had trouble identifying himself in photos presented at the testimony in 2016.&nbsp;

According to reports, Dugar will be staying at a residential transitional facility for 90 days, as per the conditions of his release.

US man wrongly serves 20 years in prison, released after twin brother's confession

After claiming the life of a 31-year-old astrophysicist from the UK, stray bullets in the US have found another victim. Well, this time, it is an 8-year-old Chicago girl. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The girl was shot in the head while walking with her mother. She was killed by a gunman, who was targeting someone else on the city's southwest side. &nbsp;

The young victim has been identified by the medical examiner's office of the Cook County as&nbsp;Melissa Ortega&nbsp;on Sunday. &nbsp;&nbsp;

An American woman deported from Indonesia after serving prison time for her role in her mother's 2014 "suitcase" murder was arrested on Wednesday on conspiracy charges when her plane arrived in Chicago, U.S. authorities said.

Heather Mack, 26, conspired with her boyfriend to kill her mother, Sheila Von Wiese-Mack, stuff her body in a suitcase and load it into the trunk of a taxi during a vacation on the Indonesian island of Bali, the US&nbsp;Justice Department said.

Mack was scheduled to appear in US&nbsp;District Court in Chicago, her home city, on Wednesday, it added in a statement.

Indonesian authorities arrested Mack and her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 28, after the August 2014 killing. Schaefer was sentenced in 2015 to 18 years for premeditated murder, while Mack, then 19, received a 10-year sentence for being an accessory to murder.

A 2017 US&nbsp;grand jury indictment that was unsealed on Wednesday alleged that Mack and Schaefer came up with their plan to kill Von Wiese-Mack before they left the United States for Bali, and that Schaefer asked his cousin, Ryan Bibbs, about ways of killing her.

Mack asked Bibbs if he knew anyone who would kill her mother for money, and he pleaded guilty in December 2016 to one count of conspiracy to commit foreign murder of a U.S. national, the Justice Department said.

Under the department's contention that her plan was conceived in the United States, Mack faces two U.S. counts of murder conspiracy and one of obstruction, and a maximum statutory penalty of life imprisonment if convicted of the conspiracy charges, the department said.

Mack was deported following her release from prison on Oct. 29 as her permit had expired, an Indonesian immigration official said. Schaefer remains in jail.

US woman who aided Bali 'suitcase' murder arrested in Chicago

Just a day after President Joe Biden visited Chicago to plead for vaccine mandates, saying they were the only way to defeat the coronavirus, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Friday that public workers could opt out of the city’s mandate until the end of the year by getting regularly tested.

The mayor announced the mandate for Chicago workers in August. But the proposal was met with immediate pushback from employees and labor groups, including the Fraternal Order of Police and the Chicago Federation of Labor.

Now, workers who are not fully vaccinated by Oct. 15, including those who have sought medical or religious exemptions, must get tested twice a week, separated by three to four days, at their own time and expense, the mayor’s office said.

Cities and states around the country have introduced vaccine mandates for their workers, and some have been met with legal challenges.

After being delayed by the courts, a vaccine mandate for educators and staff in New York City public schools was cleared to proceed after a ruling by a federal appeals panel last week. Though it faced opposition, the mandate pushed tens of thousands of Department of Education employees to get their shots.

The Chicago Police Department reports that two officers were shot on the South Side of Chicago on Saturday night. One of them, a&nbsp;29-year-old female officer, later succumbed to her injuries.

According to Chicago Police, the officers were shot around 9:10 pm in the 6300-block of South Bell Avenue, and they were in serious-to-critical condition.

The officers were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where soon after the shooting, a crowd of police officers had gathered. Some officers appeared emotional, others hugged each other.

The mayor declared a day of mourning and&nbsp;called on people to show support and work with the police.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The police reported that three people were involved in the shooting, out of which two suspects had been arrested. Currently, one suspect in Christ hospital is in stable condition after being shot. Efforts are being made to find a third individual. A weapon was also recovered from the scene.

He continued jumping into the lake through the fall before the hard part: Hacking a hole in the ice on the frozen lake that was big enough for him to jump through during the winter. He said when he got home after one such jump, he found about 20 scrapes and cuts on his body.

He was encouraged by the response he got for his undertaking. "People started asking me what this was benefiting and how they could support and when I say people, I'm talking strangers online, you know. When I started posting the videos on Twitter and Instagram ... I got more wind in my sails there because people started commenting like, This makes my day, it's nice to see this," he said.

Saturday was special because it was the culmination of doing it for a full year. "I just wanted to celebrate just that drive to dive for 365," O'Conor said.&nbsp;

Hundreds of people marched through the Logan Square neighborhood in Chicago on Friday evening, calling for overhauls to the city’s police department after the fatal shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo by a police officer in March.

Holding signs reading “Justicia Para Adam” and “We are Adam, defund the police,” a large crowd listened as speakers denounced the Chicago Police Department and Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Adam was shot and killed by a police officer, Eric E. Stillman, 34, in the early hours of March 29. In video of the shooting, released Thursday by an independent city agency that investigates police conduct, Adam is chased down an alley by a white police officer, who orders him to stop and show his hands. An analysis of the video, slowing down events that took place in the space of a second, shows the boy then appearing to toss a handgun nearby and raising his hands in the air, just before the officer shoots him in the chest.

Jasmin Cardenas, who attended the march with her two small children, cried as she stood holding a sign supporting Adam and his family. She lives in Little Village, the predominantly Latino neighborhood where Adam was killed, and runs an after-school arts program that once worked with children at Gary Elementary, where Adam was a student.

The neighborhood is sorely lacking in services for children and teenagers, she said, and needs nurses in the schools and more art programs to keep young people busy.

“I’m just in shock at how many of us made mistakes and we’re still here,” Cardenas said. “He did all the right things. He put his hands up, and he still got shot.”

With renewed national attention on police conduct amid the Derek Chauvin trial in Minneapolis, demonstrations also took place beyond Chicago on Friday night.

In the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, protests continued in front of that city’s police department for a sixth straight night following an officer’s fatal shooting of a 20-year-old motorist, Daunte Wright.

Protesters occasionally threw bottles of water and pushed up against a fence in front of the Police Department. Police fired a volley of pepper spray, rubber bullets and grenades that made a loud bang into the crowd, injuring several people and briefly setting the umbrella that one protester had used to block pepper spray on fire. There was no curfew Friday, but police declared the assembly unlawful before running at the crowd just after 10 p.m., making dozens of arrests.

In Chicago, speakers addressed a crowd in a large neighborhood park at the beginning of the rally, calling for defunding of the police and for measures like rent control to be enacted. At the mention of Lightfoot by one of the speakers, the crowd booed loudly.

“Our goal is to not let people forget and keep being active,” said Maximo Rodriguez, who said he had been involved in social justice causes since 1985, when he was a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “The problem isn’t us, it’s the police. Whenever they’re around, there’s a chance for violence.”

Evelene Certa, 13, of suburban Berwyn, has been going to protests with her family her entire life, she said. “This one, it’s a kid my age,” she said, before pausing to gather herself. “It could’ve happened to me. It really changes my point of view.”
