<p>The Indian consulate in the US city said that they are aware of the incident and are in touch with Ali’s wife for “all possible assistance”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Syed Mazahir Ali's wife Ruqiya Fatima wrote to external affairs minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday. “This is to state that my husband Syed Mazahir Ali who was pursuing a Masters in Information and Technology from Indiana Wesley University, I got a call around 6 pm on February 4 from one of my husband’s friends that he had been attacked very badly and robbed at Campbell Ave, Chicago while he was near his apartment and has been taken to some hospital,” she wrote.</p>

<p>“I am very much worried about the safety and security of my husband. I request you to kindly help him in getting the best medical treatment and if possible make necessary arrangements so that I can travel to USA along with my three minor children to be with my husband,” she wrote.</p>

<p>Now, he is in the nursery at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, which is one of only a few facilities in the United States with the resources to care for rescued otters. It arrived in Chicago at the end of November.&nbsp;</p>

Sea otters have a very dense coat — there's anywhere from 700,000 to a million hairs per square inch, and that's what they use to keep themselves warm. They don't have a thick layer of blubber or fat like other marine mammals do, so taking care of that coat is very important."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Otter babies learn lessons from their mothers, especially about grooming. Since Pup EL2306 was found alone, the aquarium team helped it by acting in the place of its&nbsp;mother. The team encourages the pup's healthy development.&nbsp;</p>

US: At least 15 shot dead at Halloween party in Chicago

<p>Locals in Chicago were befuddled after a strange phenomenon resulted in death of at least 1000 birds from colliding into a single building. Media reports said that the number of dead birds was so large that ground appeared 'carpetted'. Volunteers had a lot on their hands as bird carcasses were strewn within 1.5 miles of McCormick Place. It is the largest convention center in North America. The structure is largely covered with glass.</p>

<p>“It’s the tip of an iceberg but it’s it’s a huge, huge amount of birds we found both dead and injured,” said Annette Prince, director &nbsp;of Chicago Bird Collision Monitors as quoted by The Guardian. She added that this was the highest number of bird strikes reported by the group on the grounds of one building in a single day.</p>

<p>From late Wednesday, October 4 through early Thursday, October 5, an estimated 1.5 million birds were in air over Chicago metropolitan area. Carcasses of birds like hermit thrush, American woodcocks, Tennessee warblers and more were found.</p>

<p>“Not every bird that hits the window is going to leave behind a body,” said Brendon Samuels as quoted by The Guardian. Samuels researches bird window collisions at University of Western Ontario.</p>

<p>A CCTV footage recorded the whole incident. It showed the victim walking down a residential alleyway in Bucktown in the afternoon while eating a slice of pizza when&nbsp;two men ran up to him from behind and attacked him with a punch to his head. As soon as he fell next to the chain-link fence, the attackers began to rain blows on him with their fists and feet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The victim screamed and tried to resist. However, the fight split across the alley. He managed to bring one of the attackers to the ground&nbsp;but the other began stomping him with his feet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A car across the street blared its horn to warn and distract the attackers. Eventually, they snatched the victim's bag and cell phone and delivered a violent stomp before walking away calmly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"With all the policies and procedures put into place, officers find themselves with their hands tied behind their back," testified Carlos Yanez Jr., a retired Chicago cop who was shot four times during a traffic stop, and his partner, Ella French, was killed, WLS reported.</p>

<p>"Officers continue to lap up violent offenders, but we find them back on the street committing even more violent crimes, including murder," he added.</p>

<p>The bodies of the victims were found in their suburban Chicago home around 8:40 pm (local time) by officers who were sent by concerned relatives to conduct a well-being check, the Romeoville Police Department Deputy Chief Chris Burne told reporters, on Monday (Sep 18).&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added that the officials believe the victims were shot sometime between Saturday night and early Sunday. Burne also said that the deaths are being investigated as murders but since they took place more than 18 hours ago, officials do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.</p>

<p>The police said that the investigation remains in its early stages but believe that the family was killed between Saturday 9:00 pm (local time) and 5:00 am Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>About the victims</strong></h2>

<p>Police identified the couple as Alberto Rolon and Zoraida Bartolomei while the names and the ages of their children were not immediately released. The police said that they do not believe that the “offender is among the victims right now,” adding that “it is not a murder-suicide.”</p>

<p>“Every loss of life is a tragedy,” said the Texas Division of Emergency Management, in a statement. It added, “Once the child presented with health concerns, the bus pulled over and security personnel on board called 911 for emergency attention.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>A report by the American media outlet CBS News reported that the toddler was a girl from Venezuela. According to the Texas officials, the child received treatment from paramedics and later died at a hospital.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Texas officials said that the temperature of all passengers was taken and they were also asked about any medical conditions. The bus departed from the Texas border city of Brownsville and was heading for Chicago, Illinois.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As a part of Texas’ Republican Governor Greg Abbott’s sprawling mission on the border, called Operation Lone Star, the state has bused more than 30,000 migrants to Democratic-controlled cities across the US since 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, President Joe Biden’s administration is also suing the state for the wrecking ball-sized buoys placed on the Rio Grande, earlier this year, which pose environmental and humanitarian concerns.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The so-called operation has also come under scrutiny amid recent reports of Texas officials separating some migrant families on the border. When asked about the toddler’s death, US Representative Henry Cuellar, a Democrat whose district includes the Texas border said he was unaware about the incident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“You can’t use the migrants as political pawns. You still got to be accountable to taking care of them, especially if you're transporting kids,” said Cuellar. He also criticised Abbott and said that the Texas governor should work with the federal government on border security.</p>

Study: Underground heat is shifting Chicago's foundations

<p>The ground underneath the Chicago city is gradually deforming due to “underground climate change”, scientists are claiming.</p>

<p>According to the latest study, this phenomenon is called “subsurface heat islands” and is caused by heat released by buildings and subterranean transportation such as subway systems.</p>

<p>The research argues that rising temperatures are causing land to undergo massive changes in urban areas and that it could adversely affect buildings and infrastructure, threatening long-term durability.</p>

<p>“The denser the city, the more intense is underground climate change,” said lead study author Alessandro Rotta Loria, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, reports CNN.</p>

<p>He said that soil, rocks and construction materials are being impacted by temperature variations.</p>

<p>For example, the ground underneath buildings can contract when heated, causing unwanted settlement, Loria said.</p>

<p>“Deformations caused by underground climate change are relatively small in magnitude, but they continuously develop,” he said.</p>

<p>“Over time, they can become very significant for the operational performance of civil infrastructure like building foundations, water retaining walls, tunnels and so on.”</p>

<h2><strong>New York was also found to be sinking</strong></h2>

<p>Notably, it comes after scientists announced New York may be sinking under the weight of its own buildings back in May —with 1.68 trillion pounds pushing down on the ground beneath.</p>

<p>The study, which was published this month in the Communications Engineering journal, came to the conclusion after observing the land changes for the past 25 years.</p>

<p>The researchers installed 150 temperature sensors across the Chicago Loop district, both above and below ground, and in a variety of places such as basements, tunnels and parking garages.</p>

<p>Sensors were also placed in Grant Park along Lake Michigan to compare temperatures from an unbuilt area with no excess heat coming from construction or transportation.</p>

<p>The data that was collected for the last three years showed that the ground under the Loop was up to 18 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) warmer than the ground beneath the park.</p>

<p>“And the consequence of that is that at least a portion of the heat will diffuse towards the ground over time, and that’s the origin of the phenomenon,” Loria said.</p>

<p>Loria notes that underground climate change can cause issues such as groundwater contamination or problems with underground railways by making tracks prone to buckling or causing passengers to become ill due to excessive heat.</p>

The research argues that rising temperatures are causing land to undergo massive changes in urban areas and that it could adversely affect buildings and infrastructure, threatening long-term durability. “The denser the city, the more intense is underground climate change,” said lead study author Alessandro Rotta Loria, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, reports CNN. He said that soil, rocks and construction materials are being impacted by temperature variations. For example, the ground underneath buildings can contract when heated, causing unwanted settlement, Loria said. “Deformations caused by underground climate change are relatively small in magnitude, but they continuously develop,” he said. “Over time, they can become very significant for the operational performance of civil infrastructure like building foundations, water retaining walls, tunnels and so on.” New York was also found to be sinking Notably, it comes after scientists announced New York may be sinking under the weight of its own buildings back in May —with 1.68 trillion pounds pushing down on the ground beneath. The study, which was published this month in the Communications Engineering journal, came to the conclusion after observing the land changes for the past 25 years. The researchers installed 150 temperature sensors across the Chicago Loop district, both above and below ground, and in a variety of places such as basements, tunnels and parking garages. Sensors were also placed in Grant Park along Lake Michigan to compare temperatures from an unbuilt area with no excess heat coming from construction or transportation. The data that was collected for the last three years showed that the ground under the Loop was up to 18 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) warmer than the ground beneath the park. “And the consequence of that is that at least a portion of the heat will diffuse towards the ground over time, and that’s the origin of the phenomenon,” Loria said. Loria notes that underground climate change can cause issues such as groundwater contamination or problems with underground railways by making tracks prone to buckling or causing passengers to become ill due to excessive heat. <p>Exploiting the financial difficulties faced by these girls and their families, Quilter resorted to money transfers as a means to encourage them to record and send explicit material.</p>

<p>US Attorney's Office said, Quilter&nbsp;"preyed on the victims' financial difficulties, using money transfers to the victims' families to entice the girls to record the sexually explicit images."</p>

<h2><strong>Years of predatory abuse</strong></h2>

<p>In the government's sentencing memorandum, Assistant US Attorney Ashley Chung described Quilter's actions as a deliberate targeting and grooming of young Filipino girls.&nbsp;"Victim by victim, and message by message, defendant used social media and the internet to target and groom young Filipino girls," Chung said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A tornado reached near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Wednesday (July 12) as hundreds of flights were disrupted. Passengers were forced to take shelter.</p>

<p>The National Weather Service in Chicago confirmed the presence of a tornado on the ground around 7 pm local time.</p>

<p>“This tornado has been touching the ground intermittently so far and is moving east. There are additional circulations along the line south of O’Hare. Seek shelter if in the warned area,” it stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Federal Aviation Administration grounded all departures of commercial flights at Midway and O’Hare airports.</p>

<p>As per FlightAware, more than 300 flights in and out of O’Hare and also 32 in and out of Midway were cancelled, with hundreds of people sheltered at O’Hare.</p>

<p>The video from TV stations showed hundreds of people huddled in an O’Hare concourse.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kevin Bargnes, director of communications for O’Hare and Chicago Midway International Airport, told WGN-TV Wednesday night that no damage was reported at either airport.</p>

<p>At least 20 people were shot, one fatally, reported the local media citing the officials as police are in the midst of investigating an overnight shooting in the US state of Illinois southwest suburban Willowbrook, on Sunday (June 18).&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What do we know about the incident</strong>?</h2>

<p>Witnesses have said over 200 teens and young adults were gathered for a Juneteenth celebration when over two dozen shots were fired into the crowd. The incident took place at the intersection of Honeysuckle Rose Lane and Route 83 (Kingery Highway) in DuPage County.</p>

<p>As of Sunday, at least 20 people had been shot, one fatally, said DuPage County Deputy Sheriff Eric Swanson told reporters. As per reports, victims were taken to the nearby hospitals in DuPage, Cook and Will counties.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fire officials had earlier said that there are five gunshot victims and at least 10 people have been shot and injured out of which two of them are in critical condition. According to Battalion Chief Joe Ostrander with the Tri-State Fire Protection District the shooting took place at around 12:30 am (local time), reported the local media.&nbsp;At least 12 ambulances responded to the scene,&nbsp;Ostrander added.</p>

<p>The condition of the victims was not immediately known. Additionally,&nbsp;Swanson said that the&nbsp;motive behind the shooting is unclear and it is still an active investigation.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>What did the eyewitnesses say?</h2>

<p>“It was supposed to be like a Juneteenth celebration; we just started hearing shooting, so we dropped down until they stopped. They just kept going,” witness Markeshia Avery told the local media, adding that after that we “literally scattered away”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Similarly, another witness, who was not named&nbsp;said, “We were all just out, and, next thing you know shots just kept going off; everybody ran, and it was chaos.”</p>
