The health body added it instantly removed seven apps that were being used by the public, citing security issues. Meanwhile, US Army informed it removed an app carrying the 'Pushwood' code in March earlier this year, owing to the same concerns. Reportedly, soldiers at one of the major combat army bases had been using the app. Apart from CDC and Army, the footballing body UEFA, USA's National Rifle Association (NRA), Britain's Labour Party and consumer goods giant Unilever used apps with Pushwood code installed on it. While Reuters' investigation has not established any direct or malicious intent, it certainly doesn't mean that the risk of data being leaked to the Kremlin may have reduced. Russia is the global leader in hacking and cyber-espionage and given the deterioration in US-Russia relations in the backdrop of the Ukraine conflict, such a connection cannot be easily whisked away. According to the publication, Pushwood is based in the Siberian town of Novosibirsk. However, the company allegedly managed to con its way through by claiming to be based in California, Maryland and Washington DC in different regulatory filings and on social media. The company employs around 40 people and has reported revenues in excess of $2.4 million in the previous financial year. While allegations surrounding the company gain pace, Max Konev, Pushwood's founder in an email said he had not tried to mask the company's Russian origins. "I am proud to be Russian and I would never hide this," said Konev whilst adding his company "has no connection with the Russian government of any kind." According to the data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of infections has increased for several STDs including, gonorrhoea and syphilis while the cases of HIV have also surged.&nbsp;

The cases of infections like syphilis rose by 26% between 2020 and 2021, with the data indicating at least 52,354 cases of primary and secondary syphilis that were reported last year. This was the highest rate of infections recorded since 1991, while the total number of cases reached its highest since 1948. This is being compared to the 7% rise in syphilis infections between 2019 and 2020.&nbsp;

According to the data from CDC, the rate of syphilis infections is the greatest among American Indian and Alaska Native persons. While men who have sex with other men are disproportionately affected by these infections. There was an overall 4.4% of increase from 2020 to 2021, in the rates of the three common STDs including chlamydia and gonorrhoea.&nbsp;

Syphilis particularly can be a concerning infection, as the bacterial disease can surface as genital sores but can worsen over time with severe symptoms and death if left untreated. On the other hand, there was a 16% rise in the cases of HIV last year, reports indicate. “We must work collectively to rebuild, innovate, and expand STI prevention in the US – to close existing gaps, create lasting change and realize this vision,” said CDC’s director of STD prevention, Leandro Mena, in a statement.&nbsp;

During an interview, Mike Saag, an infectious disease expert at the University of Alabama in Birmingham said, “It’s pretty simple. More sexually transmitted infections occur when people are having more unprotected sex.” Reportedly, he indicated that the core part of any effort to stop the spread of STDs must encourage and increase the use of condoms.

Experts have also indicated that there can be several causes for this increase in STDs, some attributing it to inadequate funding which has led to less testing and prevention efforts and the spread may have gotten worse especially during the Covid-19 pandemic when there was a delay in diagnosis and treatment.&nbsp;

In a report by NBC, it is said that the CDC this year has identified more EV-D68 cases among children with severe respiratory illness than in the past three years combined. As quoted by NBC news, Dr Sarah Hopkins, a pediatric neurologist at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, said: "We really thought this was going to happen in 2020, because we had the last spike in 2018. But then with mask-wearing and social distancing and all those things that limit the spread of a respiratory virus, we didn't have that expected spike." Research shows that women heart diseases are often overlooked

During an investigation of two human melioidosis cases, B. pseudomallei or Burkholderia pseudomallei was detected in puddle water and soil samples in southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast region.

The household products and the environment around the homes of two people, who got sick due to the same bacteria as they lived in close geographic proximity, were investigated.

As a result of the bacteria, they started experiencing nonspecific symptoms such as fever, headaches, and joint pain.

Mostly related to travel to tropical and subtropical regions, there are about 12 cases in the US per year on average.

Advising people in southern Mississippi to take extra precautions, the CDC said underlying conditions include excessive alcohol use, chronic lung or kidney disease, and diabetes.

Highlighting that the risk of melioidosis for the general population continues to be very low, CDC added that precautions include wearing waterproof boots and gloves while gardening, protecting open wounds with dressing, and avoiding contact with soil and muddy water.

Bacteria behind rare disease found in United States for first time ever, CDC issues health advisory

Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus that spreads from animals to people), less severe than smallpox. However, its symptoms are similar to those seen in smallpox. Primarily affecting central and west Africa, monkeypox has been spreading into various countries and cities. Seeing the outbreak, the World Health Organisation declared Monkeypox a ‘global emergency,’ and calls for global cooperation against the virus.&nbsp;

Here are five facts related to monkeypox that you need to know:

1. Symptoms:

Monkeypox typically takes 6 to 13 days to develop, although it can take anything from 5 to 21 days or symptoms to appear. The virus is self-limiting with symptoms that last between two and four weeks. Children are more likely to experience severe cases.&nbsp;

The symptoms can be first during the invasion period (0-5 days), marked by fever, severe headache, back pain, and severe asthenia (lack of energy). The second can be, that after the onset of a fever, the skin eruption often starts one to three days later. Instead of the trunk, the rash is more frequently found on the face and limbs. In nearly 95 per cent of the instances, it affects the palms of the hands and soles of the feet with the face.&nbsp;

In general, the case fatality ratio of monkeypox has traditionally fluctuated from 0 to 11 per cent; higher in young children. The case fatality rate recently has been between 3 and 6 per cent, WHO reported.&nbsp;

Several observational studies have shown that smallpox vaccination is almost 85 per cent effective in preventing monkeypox.

Smallpox vaccinations cidofovir, ST-246, and vaccina immune globulin can be used to help in treating the virus.

However, in 2019 a brand newer vaccine based on the Ankara strain of the modified attenuated vaccinia virus was authorised for the prevention of monkeypox. This is a two-dose vaccine that is still only partially available.

According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the spike in gun-related deaths among Americans aged one to 19 was part of a nationwide 33.4 per cent increase in firearm homicides.

The research also points out that the rate of suicides using firearms also experienced a 1.1 per cent spike.

The US health agency informed that syphilis rates in newborns soared 235 per cent in four years with cases among newborns rising 15 per cent in 2020 as compared to the previous year with early data indicating that "primary and secondary syphilis and congenital syphilis cases continued to increase in 2021 as well."

Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV, said: "The COVID-19 pandemic put enormous pressure on an already strained public health infrastructure."&nbsp;

CDC listed the factors for the decline in STD cases in the initial months of 2020 attributing it largely to reduced frequency of in-person healthcare services, diversion of health officials due to COVID-19, STD test and laboratory supply shortages and lapses in health insurance due to unemployment.

The report said STD cases among gay and bisexual men including the youth continued to rise.

Leandro Mena, director of CDC's STD prevention division, said: "COVID-19 pandemic increased awareness of a reality we’ve long known about STDs."

"Social and economic factors such as poverty and health insurance status create barriers, increase health risks, and often result in worse health outcomes," the CDC official said.

This season’s flu vaccine has offered little to no protection against getting a mild or moderate case of influenza, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week.

In a study of more than 3,600 Americans in seven states, the CDC said in a report that the vaccine was only around 16% effective, a rate that it said was “not statistically significant.”

“It’s not ineffective, but it’s clearly suboptimal in its efficacy,” Dr Jesse L. Goodman, a former chief scientist at the Food and Drug Administration, said Thursday. He reviewed the report but was not associated with it.

Still, despite the vaccine’s lacklustre performance this season, which started in October and lasts through May, the CDC suggested that people get inoculated, saying that it could “prevent serious outcomes.”

Scientists had warned in 2020 that the flu season if it was severe, could converge with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/coronavirus">COVID-19</a> to create a dreaded “twindemic.” But coronavirus restrictions — including working from home and the use of masks — along with a high flu vaccine rate may have helped reduce caseloads the past few seasons, during which, the CDC said, cases have been at a record low.

Still, even a mild flu season can be devastating. The CDC estimated that during the 2019-20 flu season, around 22,000 people in the country had died and 400,000 had been hospitalised.

This season, the agency said, “influenza activity” declined in December and January, during the worst of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/omicron">omicron</a> surge, but increased in early February.

In October and November 2021, the agency investigated a flu outbreak at the University of Michigan, where there were 745 cases, mostly involving students who had not been vaccinated against the flu. Investigators there also found that the vaccine did not offer much protection.

Goodman said that this season’s results showed how much flu vaccines could be improved.

“The next pandemic could be an influenza pandemic,” Goodman said, “so we need better vaccines.”

Every year, scientists decide whether they need to update the flu vaccine to protect against the strains that they predict will dominate the upcoming season.

The low efficacy rate this season, Goodman said, “suggests that there was a mismatch between the strains of virus in the vaccine and what’s circulating.”

The CDC, while&nbsp;announcing its revised guidelines said about 70 per cent&nbsp;of US&nbsp;counties and 72 per cent&nbsp;of the US&nbsp;population resides in communities where face coverings are no longer recommended.

The agency on Thursday said 85.4 per cent of counties are now ranked as low to medium risk and about 92.9 per cent of the population lives in those counties.

However, it is&nbsp;still to be determined whether the Biden administration will extend the mask&nbsp;requirements for travelling on airplanes, trains, buses or for transit hubs.

The current transit order expires on March 18 but can be&nbsp;extended. As per the White House the issue is still being evaluated.

The guidelines announced last week shifted its focus from COVID-19 transmission rates to infection rates, local hospitalisation and hospital capacity.

Many federal agencies this week have told government employees that they can now stop wearing masks indoors in federal buildings in Washington, D.C. Area or in some low or medium Covid&nbsp;level areas including Pentagon, Transportation Department, Justice Department, State Department and Federal Aviation.

“We are welcoming comments from patients who are living with pain every day and from their caregivers and providers,” said Christopher Jones, a co-author of the draft and acting director of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, the arm of the CDC that released the new guidelines.

The guidelines do not apply to patients suffering pain from cancer or sickle cell, or are in end-of-life or palliative care.

The 2016 guidelines generated anger and fear in many chronic pain patients, many of whom rely on doses far higher than the recommended ceiling of 90 morphine milligram equivalents daily. Hundreds of pain medicine specialists protested as well.

Though the dosing ceilings were merely a recommendation, dozens of states codified them. Fearing criminal and civil penalties, many doctors misapplied them as rigid standards, tapering chronic pain patients too abruptly and even tossing some from their practices.

Studies show that the number of opioid prescriptions overall has been dropping since 2012, and the decline escalated after the 2016 guidelines came out.

The new proposed recommendations step back from the notion of one-size dosing fits all and instead builds in “flexibility to recognize that pain care needs to be individualized,” Jones said.

But the recommendations make it abundantly clear that doctors should regularly reassess the benefits and risks of opioids.

“The evidence around the long-term benefits of opioids continues to remain very limited,” Jones said.

In another indication that the CDC sees these new guidelines as a course-correction to the earlier ones, the agency now suggests that when patients test positive for illicit substances, doctors should offer counseling, treatment and, when necessary, careful tapering. Because doctors had interpreted the 2016 dosing limits narrowly, some had worked up one-strike policies and were summarily ejecting such patients.

Jones said that such results should instead be considered one piece of diagnostic information among many. An unduly high level of opioids could indicate the patient still has untreated pain or even a substance use disorder.

“If you instead retain the patient and have those conversations, there’s now an opportunity to improve the patient’s life,” he said.

Drawing from a mountain of research that accumulated in recent years, the proposed guidelines also offer extensive recommendations for the treatment of acute pain — short-term pain that can come with an injury like a broken bone or the aftermath of surgery. They advise against prescribing opioids, except for traumatic injuries, such as burns and auto accidents.

In granular detail, they compare the relief provided by opioids to that offered by alternatives such as exercise and acupuncture and other drugs. And they give fine-tuned recommendations for discrete areas of pain, such as lower back, knees and neck.

The guidelines, for example, note that opioids should not be used for episodic migraines. They endorse, among other treatments, heat therapy and weight loss for knee osteoarthritis, and, for neck pain, suggest options like yoga, tai chi, qiqong, massage and acupuncture.

It is generally accepted that booster shots keep people from becoming infected, at least for a while. Data from Israel and other countries have also suggested that boosters can help prevent severe illness and hospitalization, especially in older adults.

“Data from other countries have also shown significant benefit of getting the booster, but this is really showing it in the U.S.,” Akiko Iwasaki, an immunologist at Yale University, said of the figures released Friday. “These numbers should be very convincing.”

On Thursday night, the CDC published additional data showing that in December, unvaccinated Americans 50 and older were about 45 times more likely to be hospitalized than those who were vaccinated and got a third shot.

Yet less than 40% of fully vaccinated Americans who are eligible for a booster shot have received one.

Friday’s results are based on three new studies led by the CDC. In one study, researchers analyzed hospitalizations and visits to emergency departments and urgent care clinics in 10 states from Aug. 26, 2021 to Jan. 5, 2022.

Vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization with the omicron variant fell to just 57% in people who had received their second dose more than six months earlier, the authors found. A third shot restored that protection to 90%.

It is unclear whether protection from the boosters might also wane as it did after two shots, noted Natalie Dean, a biostatistician at Emory University.

“We just have to recognize that all these estimates of omicron third-dose protection are going to be people who are pretty recently boosted,” she said. “We do wonder the durability of boosters themselves.”

When debating booster shot recommendations for all American adults, scientific advisers to the Food and Drug Administration and the CDC repeatedly bemoaned the lack of booster shot data that was specific to the United States.

There are differences between Israel and the United States — for example, in the way Israel defines severe illness — that made it challenging to interpret the relevance of Israeli data for Americans, they said.

Some members of the Biden administration supported the use of booster doses even before the scientific advisers of the agencies had a chance to review the data from Israel. Federal health officials intensified their boosters-for-all campaign after the arrival of the omicron variant.

The CDC now recommends booster shots for everyone 12 and older, five months after getting two doses of the mRNA vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, or two months after a single dose of the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine.

The usefulness of booster shots in Americans younger than 50 was a topic of vigorous debate in the fall. Several experts argued at the time that third shots were unnecessary for younger adults because two doses of the vaccine were holding up well.

Some of those experts remained unconvinced by the new data.

But “where is the evidence that a third dose benefits a healthy young person?” he asked.

“If you’re trying to stop the spread of this virus, vaccinate the unvaccinated,” he said. “We keep trying to further protect the already protected.”

But other experts changed their minds in favor of boosters because of the highly contagious omicron variant. Even if two doses were enough to keep young people out of hospitals, they said, a third dose could limit virus spread by preventing infections.

“They’re both data-driven, legitimate positions,” said John Moore, a virus expert at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York. But at this point, the debate is over: “We are using boosters in everyone and that’s what’s happening.”
