US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Thursday (August 17) that it was keeping an eye on a new, highly mutated lineage of virus that causes COVID-19. The lineage is named BA.2.86. It has reportedly been detected in the United States, Israel as well as in Denmark. The CDC has said this on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

"As we learn more about BA.2.86, CDC's advice on protecting yourself from COVID-19 remains the same," the agency said.

Earlier on Thursday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a post on X that it was considering BA.2.86 as a "variant under monitoring". It said it was monitoring it due to large number of mutations it carries. The agency said further that only a few sequences of the variant have been reported from a handful of countries.

The new lineage, which has 36 mutations from the currently-dominant XBB.1.5 COVID variant "harkens back to an earlier branch" of the virus, explained Dr. S. Wesley Long, medical director of diagnostic microbiology at Houston Methodist. Dr Long was quoted by Reuters.

He said it remains to be seen whether BA.2.86 will be able to out-compete other strains of the virus or have any advantage in escaping immune responses from prior infection or vaccination.

Reuters quoted \virologist Jesse Bloom, who said that early analysis indicated that the new variant "will have equal or greater escape than XBB.1.5 from antibodies elicited by pre-Omicron and first-generation Omicron variants."

Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 is the strain that's targetted by vaccines in upcoming Covid booster shots.

Bloom's slides note that the most likely scenario is that BA.2.86 is less transmissible than current dominant variants, so never spreads widely, but more sequencing data is needed.

"My biggest concern would be that it could cause a bigger spike in cases than what we have seen in recent waves," Dr. Long said. "The boosters will still help you fight off COVID in general."

"Woodrow Turner Bundy returned victoriously to our father in heaven at 2:56 am. He fought 7 days. The longest any person has survived on record is 3," wrote Briana.&nbsp;

"I knew I had the strongest son in the world. He is my hero and I will forever be grateful to God for giving me the goodest baby boy on earth, and I am grateful to know I will have that boy in heaven someday," she added.&nbsp;

After conducting the tests, it was found that little Bundy had&nbsp;contracted&nbsp;Naegleria fowleri - a brain-eating amoeba which had sparked panic across the US last year.&nbsp;

As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the infection almost turns fatal for the majority of patients.&nbsp;People who get infected suffer from a disease called primary amebic meningoencephalitis. Symptoms include&nbsp;headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, disorientation, a stiff neck, a loss of balance, seizures and/or hallucinations.

Typically, an amoeba survives in warm fresh water like ponds, lakes and swimming pools. If the amoeba enters through the nose, it can cause a severe infection. However, if it enters through the mouth, it is normally safe, because the single-cell microorganism is killed by the stomach acid.&nbsp;

The family of the kid had written to the CDC to provide medication to the boy. However, the health body refused to administer medication, saying he was "past the point of any survivor".&nbsp;

“He currently shows no brain activity but there are still a few things we are trying,” Briana wrote at the time.&nbsp;

The family's friends and relatives have set up a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/please-help-mel-and-brianna-through-this-tragedy">GoFundMe</a> page, imploring the public to&nbsp;help with the medical and funeral costs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"They are going to need assistance financially with the arrangements and with the loss of income for the next few weeks. Please give what you can. 100% of the donations will go to Mel and Brianna," reads the description.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, in March, a Florida resident also died after contracting the same brain-eating amoeba after using tap water to rinse nasal sinuses.&nbsp;

She didn't provide any specific reasons for her resignation in her letter to Biden, but she did state that the country is going through a transition as emergency declarations come to an end. “I have never been prouder of anything I have done in my professional career,” she wrote.

US: CDC chief Rochelle Walensky resigns, says Covid-19 waning good time for transition

The new Omicron subvariant XBB.1.16, dubbed “Arcturus”, which has been driving up cases in India, has also been reported across the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has said.

The new variant accounts for 7 per cent of the new cases reported this week, CDS in its weekly bulletin released on Friday said.

This is the first time that CDC has flagged separate Covid cases under XBB.1.16. Previously, all infections were clubbed under the XBB variant.

Most of the Covid cases accounted for in the US are due to XBB variants, with XBB.1.5, also known as “Kraken,” believed to be representing more than three-quarters of cases. Experts, however, note that levels are waning.

Meanwhile, the Southeast Asia region is witnessing a spurt in cases due to XBB.1.16. WHO’s Southeast Asia region said that India, Indonesia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bhutan, and Timor-Leste have reported a nearly 500 per cent rise in cases month over month.

Reported cases are also trending upward in the Eastern Mediterranean region—there, they’ve increased slightly more than 100% month over month.

The new variant has been identified in 29 countries so far, with cases doubling from the last full week of March to the first partial week of April, according to the WHO’s Thursday update.

The Arcturus variant is considered more transmissible and immune-evasive than its predecessors and may escape immunity acquired by previous infections or vaccines.

The symptoms are common with most of its predecessors, but doctors in India have noted a slight change, especially in children and the elderly.

Cases of conjunctivitis, or pink eye, without pus, but causing “sticky eye” have been reported among children in the country. It’s a symptom that hasn’t often been noted with other Covid variants.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared XBB.1.16 a “variant under monitoring” in late March saying that it is the most transmissible variant yet.

Maria Van Kerkhove, Covid technical lead for the WHO, said, XBB.1.16 variant is considered “one to watch" by the world health body.

XBB.1.16 is a recombinant of two sub-variants-BA2.10.1 and BA.2.75. A preprint study from scientists at the University of Tokyo said that the variant spreads about 1.17 to 1.27 times more efficiently than relatives XBB.1 and XBB.1.5 and claimed that it “will spread worldwide in the near future” as it seems “robustly resistant” to antibodies from other Covid variants.

The most common way to treat babesiosis is through a course of antibiotics. However, not all antibiotics will work for everyone.&nbsp;

The study - published in The Lancet journal - underlined that the virus was fatal in 15 per cent of those who were affected. "Emerging data suggest worse clinical outcomes and higher mortality in people with more advanced HIV," the report underlines. Professor Chloe Orkin, at Queen Mary University of London and Barts Health NHS trust, and colleagues carried out the study following reports of particularly severe mpox infections. A total of 382 cases were examined as a part of the study.

On Twitter, the scientist explained defining symptoms. "Skin rash was prolonged. The hallmark feature of this severe disseminated form of MPOX was large coalescing and necrotising lesions which occurred in 93 per cent of those who died. Sepsis occurred in 89 per cent of those who died and respiratory symptoms in 85 per cent," Orkin tweeted.

An immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome to mpox, researchers pointed out, was suspected in 21 (25 per cent) of 85 people initiated, of whom 12 (57 per cent) of 21 died.&nbsp; Of the total 382 cases, 367 were men.

However, not everyone is happy with the guidelines. &nbsp;Quoting Jane Houlihan, research director for the nonprofit Healthy Babies Bright Futures, NY Post says they are disappointing.

"It doesn’t go far enough to protect babies from neurodevelopmental damage from lead exposures," said Houlihan.&nbsp;

As per CDC, "there is also evidence that childhood exposure to lead can cause long-term harm."

As per the report, US-listed Charles River and Inotiv are among the largest suppliers of lab monkeys to the pharmaceutical industry recently issued a warning to investors that they expect disruption to US imports from Cambodia, a report by the Financial Times stated. Dr Lisa Jones-Engel, who is a Peta senior science adviser, told The Guardian, "There is no indication that the CDC or research industries have been transparent with the public about these diseased monkeys." As quoted by Financial Times, Matthew Bailey, the president at the National Association for Biomedical Research, said, "If companies and academic researchers can't get the non-human primate [monkeys] research models they need — then the work stops. You can say goodbye to new vaccines and drugs." Bailey added that "it is of crucial importance to public health and national security." The report further mentioned a case study of Melioidosis, which is an uncommon but potentially fatal disease in humans caused by the bacterium B pseudomallei. In America, the imported non-human primates, or NHPs, are held in CDC-mandated quarantine for 31 days while undergoing testing for infectious diseases. Amid concerns, the macaque was euthanized and other monkeys shipped with the infected monkey "appeared healthy at the end of the quarantine period and were released from CDC-mandated quarantine", the report mentioned. The report titled "Melioidosis in a Cynomolgus Macaque Imported to the United States from Cambodia", stated that the global movement of humans and animals can introduce B pseudomallei into nonendemic regions of the United States. As quoted by Guardian, Jones-Engel said: "Monkeys imported from Asia can harbour the Burkholderia pathogen for months, shedding the bacteria via their feces, urine, blood and saliva into the environment. The CDC knows the danger to humans and has failed to warn the public." The study suggested that in order to prevent the introduction of infectious agents to the US, CDC requires newly imported primates to be "quarantined for at least 31 d, during which time their health is closely monitored". The World Health Organization (WHO) and&nbsp;US Health agency, the&nbsp;Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned on Wednesday that the world now faces an impending threat of measles spreading in numerous locations internationally due to the COVID-19 pandemic's ongoing impact on vaccine coverage and impaired disease surveillance.

As per a joint report issued by the two organisations, a record 40 million children missed a vaccination dose for measles in the year 2021. It chalks this up to hurdles created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said that even though there are growing immunity gaps, there have not yet been an overwhelming number of cases. As per him, this may be due to a combination of factors including the cyclical nature of the disease and lingering social isolation policies.

O'Connor warned that this could change quickly given the highly contagious nature of the illness.

He further noted that since the beginning of 2022, the number of "large disruptive outbreaks" had increased, climbing from 19 to over 30 by September. He added that he was especially concerned about certain regions of sub-Saharan Africa.

Measles is one of the most contagious human viruses, although it is nearly fully preventable with immunisation. Nevertheless, to stop outbreaks among communities, there must be 95 per cent vaccination coverage.

The cases of infections like syphilis rose by 26% between 2020 and 2021, with the data indicating at least 52,354 cases of primary and secondary syphilis that were reported last year. This was the highest rate of infections recorded since 1991, while the total number of cases reached its highest since 1948. This is being compared to the 7% rise in syphilis infections between 2019 and 2020.&nbsp;

According to the data from CDC, the rate of syphilis infections is the greatest among American Indian and Alaska Native persons. While men who have sex with other men are disproportionately affected by these infections. There was an overall 4.4% of increase from 2020 to 2021, in the rates of the three common STDs including chlamydia and gonorrhoea.&nbsp;

Syphilis particularly can be a concerning infection, as the bacterial disease can surface as genital sores but can worsen over time with severe symptoms and death if left untreated. On the other hand, there was a 16% rise in the cases of HIV last year, reports indicate. “We must work collectively to rebuild, innovate, and expand STI prevention in the US – to close existing gaps, create lasting change and realize this vision,” said CDC’s director of STD prevention, Leandro Mena, in a statement.&nbsp;

During an interview, Mike Saag, an infectious disease expert at the University of Alabama in Birmingham said, “It’s pretty simple. More sexually transmitted infections occur when people are having more unprotected sex.” Reportedly, he indicated that the core part of any effort to stop the spread of STDs must encourage and increase the use of condoms.

Research shows that women heart diseases are often overlooked

Here are five facts related to monkeypox that you need to know:

1. Symptoms:

Monkeypox typically takes 6 to 13 days to develop, although it can take anything from 5 to 21 days or symptoms to appear. The virus is self-limiting with symptoms that last between two and four weeks. Children are more likely to experience severe cases.&nbsp;

In nearly 95 per cent of the instances, it affects the palms of the hands and soles of the feet with the face.&nbsp;

In general, the case fatality ratio of monkeypox has traditionally fluctuated from 0 to 11 per cent; higher in young children. The case fatality rate recently has been between 3 and 6 per cent, WHO reported.&nbsp;

 
2.&nbsp;Vaccination:

Several observational studies have shown that smallpox vaccination is almost 85 per cent effective in preventing monkeypox.

Smallpox vaccinations cidofovir, ST-246, and vaccina immune globulin can be used to help in treating the virus.

However, in 2019 a brand newer vaccine based on the Ankara strain of the modified attenuated vaccinia virus was authorised for the prevention of monkeypox. This is a two-dose vaccine that is still only partially available.

Six out of ten deaths involved a firearm, and more than three out of ten involved a firearm homicide.

Previous analyses have also shown an increasing trend in firearm-related mortality however the latest data shows a sharp 13.5 per cent spike number of such deaths in the period of just one year; between 2019 and 2020.

According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the spike in gun-related deaths among Americans aged one to 19 was part of a nationwide 33.4 per cent increase in firearm homicides.

The research also points out that the rate of suicides using firearms also experienced a 1.1 per cent spike.

According to the Children's Defense Fund, American civilians had 393 million weapons in 2017, which equates to more than one gun per person. The US military and law enforcement organisations, on the other hand, only had 5.5 million.

According to the NGO, nearly one out of every five weapons is sold without a background check because of a loophole in federal law that exempts sales at gun shows, online, or between private individuals.

Between January and April 2021, 7.5 million US individuals - about&nbsp;3 per cent of the population - became first-time gun owners, according to a separate study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in February.
