The CDC said on Friday that from July 7-11 last year, it received reports of two patients in different states with a TB diagnosis following spinal surgical procedures that used bone allografts containing live cells from the same deceased donor.&nbsp;

The statement added that as these cases (in 2023) represented a second outbreak, the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) worked with the tissue establishment to determine that this product was obtained from a donor different from the one implicated in the 2021 outbreak and learned that the bone allograft product was distributed to 13 health care facilities in seven states - California, Louisiana, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Texas, and Virginia.

The statement said that eight hospitals and five dental offices in these seven states received 50 bone allograft units from this product lot from February 27–June 20 last year. On July 12, a notification was sent to these states.&nbsp;

Upon contacting the health facilities, officials learned that including the two previously reported cases, 36 total patients had undergone procedures in which the product was used.

"As of December 20, 2023, five of the 36 recipients had received a diagnosis of laboratory-confirmed TB disease, including four that were culture-confirmed," the statement said.&nbsp;

The CDC recommended that all exposed patients receive prompt tuberculosis treatment, and no additional people died.

"She almost lost her life. She was on a respirator. They put her into a medically induced coma. Her fingers were black, her feet were black, and her bottom lip was black. She had complete sepsis, and her kidneys were failing."

Dr Natasha Spottiswoode, a disease expert told KRON, "The ways you can get infected with this bacteria are, one, you can eat something that's contaminated with it [and] the other way is by having a cut or tattoo exposed to water in which this bug lives."

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in early September issued a health advisory and warning related to the increase in Vibrio vulnificus bacterial infection in the US due to increasing water temperatures.&nbsp;

The health organisation said people can develop this illness due to infected or uncooked seafood.

Obesity is increasing in the United States, according to new data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As per the data released on Thursday (September 21st) obesity is becoming more common in a growing number of US states.&nbsp;

The survey by the CDC and state health departments revealed that of the 50 US states, 22 have at least 35 per cent of adults dealing with obesity. All states have obesity rates of at least 20 per cent.

Region-wise, overall, the prevalence of obesity was highest in the Midwest and the South, with about 36 per cent. On the other hand, the Northeast and the West had about 30 per cent of obese adults.

Furthermore, the data also found "notable differences" in the prevalence of obesity by race and ethnicity.

Among black adults, obesity was reported by around 35 per cent of adults in 38 states. At least 35 per cent of Hispanic adults in 32 states were found to be obese.&nbsp;

The figure did not exceed 35 per cent among Asian adults in any state. While for white adults, the 35 per cent metric was reached in 14 states.

The report considers adults with a body mass index of 30 and above as obese. The data, as per a CNN report, is based on self-reported measurements of height and weight.

In a statement, Dr Karen Hacker, the director of the CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, said: "Our updated maps send a clear message that additional support for obesity prevention and treatment is an urgent priority."

Hacker, as quoted by CNN, also said, "However, we know the key strategies that work include addressing the underlying social determinants of health such as access to healthcare, healthy and affordable food, and safe places for physical activity."

The CDC's Vital Signs report mentions the various forms of mistreatment. These include instances of women being scolded or shouted at, them not receiving a response to requests for help, and not having their physical privacy protected.&nbsp;

Additionally, many reported that they were on the receiving end of threats to withhold treatments or were pressured into accepting unwanted treatment.

Survey data shows that around 30 per cent of Black women, 29 per cent of Hispanic women, and 27 per cent of multiracial women reported mistreatment during their maternity care experiences.&nbsp;

<h2>What would improving pregnancy care do?</h2>

As per the survey that was conducted in April, enhancing the quality of maternity care could play a crucial role in preventing pregnancy-related deaths.

Furthermore, it highlighted how prevalent discrimination was among pregnant women.&nbsp;It noted that "the most common reasons for reported discrimination were age, weight, and income and varied by race/ethnicity."

The survey also found&nbsp;that in general, women tend to hold back from asking questions or concerns to healthcare providers during their maternity care. This hesitation was often due to&nbsp;embarrassment about discussing certain topics, fears that they would be perceived as difficult, or because the providers were rushed.

Furthermore, the type of insurance coverage held by women also played a part in their pregnancy healthcare experiences.

Pregnant women without insurance — which account for 28 per cent of those surveyed, or those with public insurance (26 per cent) reported higher rates of mistreatment compared to women with private insurance coverage (16 per cent).

Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra stressed that "every mother deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Maternal care is a core component of this nation's health care." He also said, "Bias, stigma, and mistreatment have no place in our healthcare system."

CDC survey finds disturbing mistreatment of pregnant women by health professionals

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Thursday (August 17) that it was keeping an eye on a new, highly mutated lineage of virus that causes COVID-19. The lineage is named BA.2.86. It has reportedly been detected in the United States, Israel as well as in Denmark. The CDC has said this on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

"As we learn more about BA.2.86, CDC's advice on protecting yourself from COVID-19 remains the same," the agency said.

Earlier on Thursday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a post on X that it was considering BA.2.86 as a "variant under monitoring". It said it was monitoring it due to large number of mutations it carries. The agency said further that only a few sequences of the variant have been reported from a handful of countries.

The new lineage, which has 36 mutations from the currently-dominant XBB.1.5 COVID variant "harkens back to an earlier branch" of the virus, explained Dr. S. Wesley Long, medical director of diagnostic microbiology at Houston Methodist. Dr Long was quoted by Reuters.

He said it remains to be seen whether BA.2.86 will be able to out-compete other strains of the virus or have any advantage in escaping immune responses from prior infection or vaccination.

Reuters quoted \virologist Jesse Bloom, who said that early analysis indicated that the new variant "will have equal or greater escape than XBB.1.5 from antibodies elicited by pre-Omicron and first-generation Omicron variants."

Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 is the strain that's targetted by vaccines in upcoming Covid booster shots.

Bloom's slides note that the most likely scenario is that BA.2.86 is less transmissible than current dominant variants, so never spreads widely, but more sequencing data is needed.

"My biggest concern would be that it could cause a bigger spike in cases than what we have seen in recent waves," Dr. Long said. "The boosters will still help you fight off COVID in general."

Bundy's mother,&nbsp;Briana, took to Facebook to share the tragic news of her son's passing.&nbsp;

"Woodrow Turner Bundy returned victoriously to our father in heaven at 2:56 am. He fought 7 days. The longest any person has survived on record is 3," wrote Briana.&nbsp;

"I knew I had the strongest son in the world. He is my hero and I will forever be grateful to God for giving me the goodest baby boy on earth, and I am grateful to know I will have that boy in heaven someday," she added.&nbsp;

Initially, the boy developed flu-like symptoms as the family attempted to provide him with the required healthcare. However, as Bundy's distress grew, the family took him to the hospital in the middle of the night, where doctors thought he had&nbsp;meningitis.

After conducting the tests, it was found that little Bundy had&nbsp;contracted&nbsp;Naegleria fowleri - a brain-eating amoeba which had sparked panic across the US last year.&nbsp;

As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the infection almost turns fatal for the majority of patients.&nbsp;People who get infected suffer from a disease called primary amebic meningoencephalitis. Symptoms include&nbsp;headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, disorientation, a stiff neck, a loss of balance, seizures and/or hallucinations.

Typically, an amoeba survives in warm fresh water like ponds, lakes and swimming pools. If the amoeba enters through the nose, it can cause a severe infection. However, if it enters through the mouth, it is normally safe, because the single-cell microorganism is killed by the stomach acid.&nbsp;

The family of the kid had written to the CDC to provide medication to the boy. However, the health body refused to administer medication, saying he was "past the point of any survivor".&nbsp;

“He currently shows no brain activity but there are still a few things we are trying,” Briana wrote at the time.&nbsp;

The family's friends and relatives have set up a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/please-help-mel-and-brianna-through-this-tragedy">GoFundMe</a> page, imploring the public to&nbsp;help with the medical and funeral costs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"They are going to need assistance financially with the arrangements and with the loss of income for the next few weeks. Please give what you can. 100% of the donations will go to Mel and Brianna," reads the description.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, in March, a Florida resident also died after contracting the same brain-eating amoeba after using tap water to rinse nasal sinuses.&nbsp;

Deaths involving synthetic opioids other than methadone (primarily fentanyl) continued to rise with 70,601 overdose deaths reported in 2021. Those involving stimulants, including cocaine or psychostimulants with abuse potential (primarily methamphetamine), also continued to increase with 32,537 overdose deaths in 2021.&nbsp;

The recent statistics of deaths due to drug overdose has sent the government into a frenzy state, with the governor of California, Gavin Newsom, proposing an additional $172 million USD for a project distributing Naloxone - an overdose medication.

San Francisco has been hit particularly hard, with nearly one person dying of an accidental overdose every 10 hours. “I have never been prouder of anything I have done in my professional career,” she wrote.

Meanwhile, the Southeast Asia region is witnessing a spurt in cases due to XBB.1.16. WHO’s Southeast Asia region said that India, Indonesia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bhutan, and Timor-Leste have reported a nearly 500 per cent rise in cases month over month.

Reported cases are also trending upward in the Eastern Mediterranean region—there, they’ve increased slightly more than 100% month over month.

The new variant has been identified in 29 countries so far, with cases doubling from the last full week of March to the first partial week of April, according to the WHO’s Thursday update.

Spain detects first suspected case of Ebola-like Marburg virus: Report

A severe form of mpox virus - formerly known as monkeypox - has been found in immunosuppressed people living with HIV in advanced stage, a new study has underlined. The study - published in The Lancet journal - underlined that the virus was fatal in 15 per cent of those who were affected. "Emerging data suggest worse clinical outcomes and higher mortality in people with more advanced HIV," the report underlines. Professor Chloe Orkin, at Queen Mary University of London and Barts Health NHS trust, and colleagues carried out the study following reports of particularly severe mpox infections. A total of 382 cases were examined as a part of the study.

On Twitter, the scientist explained defining symptoms. "Skin rash was prolonged. The hallmark feature of this severe disseminated form of MPOX was large coalescing and necrotising lesions which occurred in 93 per cent of those who died. Sepsis occurred in 89 per cent of those who died and respiratory symptoms in 85 per cent," Orkin tweeted.

An immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome to mpox, researchers pointed out, was suspected in 21 (25 per cent) of 85 people initiated, of whom 12 (57 per cent) of 21 died.&nbsp; Of the total 382 cases, 367 were men.

FDA estimates that the proposed levels would bring about a 25 per cent reduction in dietary exposure to lead for some young children.

However, not everyone is happy with the guidelines. &nbsp;Quoting Jane Houlihan, research director for the nonprofit Healthy Babies Bright Futures, NY Post says they are disappointing.

"It doesn’t go far enough to protect babies from neurodevelopmental damage from lead exposures," said Houlihan.&nbsp;

The Centers for Disease Control, too, has previously said that there is no safe level of lead for children. As per the agency, children below the age of six absorb the contaminant more readily and are at a greater risk. As per CDC, "there is also evidence that childhood exposure to lead can cause long-term harm."

Dr Lisa Jones-Engel, who is a Peta senior science adviser, told The Guardian, "There is no indication that the CDC or research industries have been transparent with the public about these diseased monkeys." As quoted by Financial Times, Matthew Bailey, the president at the National Association for Biomedical Research, said, "If companies and academic researchers can't get the non-human primate [monkeys] research models they need — then the work stops. You can say goodbye to new vaccines and drugs." Bailey added that "it is of crucial importance to public health and national security." The report further mentioned a case study of Melioidosis, which is an uncommon but potentially fatal disease in humans caused by the bacterium B pseudomallei. According to the CDC, B pseudomallei is a "Tier 1 select agent" with the potential to be used in bioterrorism and has a death rate of up to 50 per cent. In a research paper, which was published last week, details of a case are mentioned when one of the macaques in the US was diagnosed with B pseudomallei. The primate entered the US from Cambodia by air with 359 other macaques and was in quarantine when the diagnosis was done in Texas in January 2021. In America, the imported non-human primates, or NHPs, are held in CDC-mandated quarantine for 31 days while undergoing testing for infectious diseases. Amid concerns, the macaque was euthanized and other monkeys shipped with the infected monkey "appeared healthy at the end of the quarantine period and were released from CDC-mandated quarantine", the report mentioned. The report titled "Melioidosis in a Cynomolgus Macaque Imported to the United States from Cambodia", stated that the global movement of humans and animals can introduce B pseudomallei into nonendemic regions of the United States. As quoted by Guardian, Jones-Engel said: "Monkeys imported from Asia can harbour the Burkholderia pathogen for months, shedding the bacteria via their feces, urine, blood and saliva into the environment. The CDC knows the danger to humans and has failed to warn the public." The study suggested that in order to prevent the introduction of infectious agents to the US, CDC requires newly imported primates to be "quarantined for at least 31 d, during which time their health is closely monitored". He said that even though there are growing immunity gaps, there have not yet been an overwhelming number of cases. As per him, this may be due to a combination of factors including the cyclical nature of the disease and lingering social isolation policies.

O'Connor warned that this could change quickly given the highly contagious nature of the illness.

He further noted that since the beginning of 2022, the number of "large disruptive outbreaks" had increased, climbing from 19 to over 30 by September. He added that he was especially concerned about certain regions of sub-Saharan Africa.

Measles is one of the most contagious human viruses, although it is nearly fully preventable with immunisation. Nevertheless, to stop outbreaks among communities, there must be 95 per cent vaccination coverage.
