Israeli moviemaker Nadav Lapid`s love-hate relationship with his homeland plays out in his competition entry to this year`s Cannes Film Festival, a back-of-beyond tale inspired by his own experience of government meddling.

'Ahed's Knee' tells of an Israeli moviemaker who arrives in a dusty desert town for a screening of one of his productions. There he meets a young culture ministry official, who asks him to sign a form listing discussion topics he wishes to explore.

That triggers the moviemaker's outrage, but he also displays moments of affection for Israeli, recording a desert sunset on his phone for his dying mother, and sharing a joyous car ride with a local to the sound of Bill Withers` 'Lovely Day'. The film has divided critics, and Lapid said his own conflicted sense of identity had crept into it.

"A sort of intimacy towards Israel sneaked behind my back and got into the screen," he told a news conference, adding that he was more interested in inner conflicts than in politics.

The film jumps between flashbacks to its filmmaking hero's time in military service, where the soldiers play cruel tricks on each other, to his growing despair in the desert.

"I want to show how people`s souls are changed, tormented, perverted sometimes by a state, by a place, less than talking about the state of Israel itself," he said.

Back at home in Tel Aviv Lapid has started a new project - a film about Ahed Tamini, a Palestinian girl who is 2017, aged 16, slapped an Israeli soldier and served a prison term.

She became a hero to campaigners against the occupation of the West Bank.

Cannes 2021: First look unveiled of psychological drama 'Exploited'

There has never been a better time for women to enter the film industry, American superstar Jodie Foster told the Cannes festival on Wednesday, saying movies had too long been starved of female perspectives.

Addressing a large crowd of mostly young festival-goers in near-fluent French, she encouraged budding women filmmakers to seek their own truth and not try to please others.

"This is the moment for women to enter the industry," Foster said.

Although male domination of the industry had "not changed completely," she said, "there is now an awareness that it's been too long that we haven't heard stories told by women... This is the moment."

Foster received a lifetime achievement on Tuesday for her work that has included star turns in Taxi Driver and Bugsy Malone when she was a child, through to her Oscar-winning role in Silence of the Lambs. She has also directed several films, including Money Monster with George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

"I know it's a bit cliche to say 'tell your own stories'," Foster said. "But what I mean is: ask yourself questions about the truthfulness of things and whether they resonate within you, instead of pleasing others, be it the public or producers."

- 'Worst reason' -

Foster said many young actors entered the movie business saying "I want to be looked at in my pretty clothes" which she said was the "worst reason" for taking up the profession.

"For some people it can take years, unfortunately, to cast off that armour that separates you from authenticity on the screen," she said.

Talking about her own experience, Foster said Pedro Almodovar -- who presented her with her honorary Palme the day before -- was "the first feminist director for me".

"It was the first time I'd seen films that talked about women in an authentic way," she said of the legendary Spanish director, who has made women central to many of his films.

Foster called Almodovar an exception among male directors who "can't easily transpose themselves into a woman's body and ask themselves what the complicated and complex experience of a woman consists of."

- Male 'confusion' -

Referring to her experience as a director, she said that there was still "confusion" in the male-dominated movie industry about how women exercise leadership positions.

"They don't understand how women lead because they've never seen women lead," she said of male producers.

"They don't know how to talk to women to convince them of something. They're afraid because they don't know how to deal with these situations."

The Cannes film festival has raised eyebrows for including just four films by women directors in the list of 24 movies vying for the top Palme d'Or prize in the main competition.

The gender balance is tilted less towards men in the festival's other competition categories, and the main jury this year is mostly female, including US star Maggie Gyllenhaal, Canadian-French singer Mylene Farmer and French-Senegalese director Mati Diop.

Only one woman has won the Palme d'Or in 73 editions of the festival -- Jane Campion for The Piano in 1993.

Cannes Film Festival 2021: Jodie Foster says movies have long been starved of female perspective

Director Spike Lee on Tuesday denounced the state of race relations in the United States three decades after he first shook audiences in Cannes with films on bigotry and violence, drawing parallels with the 2020 killing of George Floyd.

Lee, the first Black person to head up the jury at the Cannes Film Festival, said little had progressed since 'Do The Right Thing' premiered on the French Riviera in 1989 - a Brooklyn-based tale of spiralling racial tensions and police brutality with a startling resonance now.

"When you see brother Eric Garner, when you see king George Floyd, murdered, lynched... you would think, you would hope that thirty-some motherfucking years later Black people would stop being hunted down like animals," Lee told a news conference in Cannes, where the world's biggest cinema showcase is due to kick off.

A judge sentenced former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin to 22-1/2 years in prison in June for Floyd's murder during an arrest in May 2020.

Video of Chauvin kneeling on the neck of the handcuffed Floyd for more than nine minutes caused outrage around the world, and the verdict was widely seen as a landmark rebuke of the disproportionate use of police force against Black Americans.

Eric Garner was killed in a deadly chokehold by a white police officer during a 2014 arrest. His dying words, "I can't breathe" became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Lee's darkly funny 'Do The Right Thing' - in which tempers fray and led to a deadly outcome over the course of boiling hot day in Brooklyn - outraged some critics when it was first released, with some claiming it would encourage riots.

Spike Lee tells Cannes Black people still 'hunted down like animals'

The head of the Cannes Film Festival took a swipe at rival events on Monday, saying some had been too quick to allow movies made by streaming giants into their main competitions without applying strict rules, and had harmed cinema as a result.

Platforms like Netflix have thrived during the COVID-19 pandemic and picked up several top film awards, while studios and cinemas have struggled as coronavirus restrictions closed movie theatres and pushed more viewers online.

Cannes, the world`s biggest cinema showcase which kicks off on the French Riviera on Tuesday, has long been at odds with streaming companies, insisting on a theatrical release in France for any film selected to compete for its top film award.

The festival`s director Thierry Fremaux told journalists on Monday that organisers stood by the rules.

"2019 was a great year for cinema. Then 2020 was the most catastrophic year in the story of filmmaking," Fremaux told journalists.
He added that the crisis had helped platforms like Netflix score a "deserved victory", but left the rest of the cinema industry with little means of fighting back.

Netflix and rivals like Amazon have become a formidable force in the movie world, and now enlist top directors, including Martin Scorsese, to make films that have only limited runs in cinemas.

Unlike Cannes, some other film festivals, including Venice, have included films made by streaming giants in their main competition lineups without imposing such stringent demands.

Before the pandemic, "Roma", a Netflix film directed by Alfonso Cuaron, won the top award at the Venice Film Festival in 2018.

"Some festivals were first to open their doors a bit too freely, to people who we are not sure if they want cinema to survive," Fremaux said.

Cannes did show two Netflix films in its official competition in 2017, but tightened its rules after a backlash from French theatres.

Fremaux said Netflix had been invited to this year`s festival to screen films out of the competition, but had declined.

Netflix could not immediately be reached for comment.

The 74th Cannes Film Festival in numbers

'Annette', the musical brainchild of enigmatic director Leos Carax and geeky pop duo Sparks, opens Cannes on Tuesday, with lead Adam Driver telling AFP he will sneak off during the screening to avoid seeing himself act.

Driver, best-known for his roles in TV show 'Girls' and the Star Wars franchise, features alongside France's Marion Cotillard in a rollercoaster production tracing the rise and fall of a celebrity couple.

It's a film that brings together the supremely gifted and the socially awkward as the stars sing their way through a story that began as an idea by Ron and Russell Mael, the eccentric Los Angeles pop duo Sparks.

But as an eager crowd climbs the Cannes steps on opening night for the first major post-pandemic film festival, one man will be heading for the exit.

"My plan is to go in and when the lights go down, I run," Driver, who has a history of avoiding watching his own films, told AFP.

He said he would try to find an empty office and sit out the screening while "playing with staplers" and making phone calls.

Describing his usual technique, he said "then I go back, and when the lights come up, I stand up I pretend that I was there the whole time."

If that stunt points to a touch of eccentricity, Driver is in good company.

Strangeness is the stock in trade of French director Carax, who was once called a sadist by actor and ex-girlfriend Juliette Binoche.

Ever since bursting on the international scene with his "The Lovers on the Bridge", he has had film lovers debating whether he is the best French filmmaker in generations, or just an oddball.

Adam Driver has picked his side: "He's one of the best directors of all time," he said.

Meanwhile, the Mael brothers have had dibs on eccentricity in pop ever since topping the charts with "This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us" in 1974.

And some 25 albums later, they still have an uncanny knack for coupling musical elegance with tonal weirdness and unusual lyrics, resulting in a wealth of catchy pieces.

Annette was their idea, which they brought to Carax after meeting him at Cannes at 2013.

They feared that his intermittent engagement might mean that film would never see the light of day but "we kept the faith and Leos stayed focused on the project", Ron Mael told AFP.

The result is a rock opera with musical styles ranging from danceable electro to classically inspired lyrical passages.

The stars do most of their own singing which, Cotillard told AFP, required "a major preparation effort in a very limited time", adding that "music is a strong vector of emotion".

Neither is a trained singer, but that was not an issue, said Driver: "The singing was secondary to what our intentions were."

Night-time Los Angeles is the backdrop for the action, with a vintage-style motorcycle as Carax's prop of choice, apart from a puppet that plays a very central role in the story.

Cotillard said the film is about "the need for recognition, about how we are affected by the strong need to be looked at, listened to and loved."

But Driver said Carax stayed mum about its meaning: "We never talked about any of the themes of the movie."

With just four women among the directors behind the 24 films in competition for the Palme d'Or, a familiar script is playing out at Cannes. Only one woman has ever won the film industry's most prestigious prize: Jane Campion for "The Piano" in 1993.

Debates over whether to blame the festival's selection committee or the wider film industry, have become as routine as sunshine and champagne on the Croisette. The debate reached new heights in 2018. With the #MeToo movement in full swing, 82 women held a protest on the steps of the Palais in Cannes, including Jane Fonda, Marion Cotillard and "Wonder Woman" director Patty Jenkins.

Palme nominees -

Three of the four women in the main competition are French: Mia Hansen-Love ('Bergman Island'), Catherine Corsini ('The Divide') and Julia Ducournau ('Titane'), along with Hungary's Ildiko Enyedi ('The Story of My Wife'). "It's no surprise that the history of the Cannes Film Festival is dominated by the celebration of male achievement when it has overwhelmingly been programmed by men," said Sophie Monks Kaufman, co-chair of pressure group Times Up UK Critics.

Touting this year's selection of four women as the joint best-ever with 2019 was "embarrassing," she added, "especially as statistically female representation is worse this year than in 2019 as the competition line-up has swollen from 21 to 24".

They will, however, face a jury that is mostly female, including French-Senegalese director Mati Diop and actor Maggie Gyllenhaal, for the fourth time in the festival's history (2009, 2014 and 2018).

There is more to Cannes than the main competition, however. Exactly half of the 24 films featured in the Directors' Fortnight are by women, including a directing debut from Luana Bajrami, who appeared in "Portrait of a Lady on Fire".

The International Critics' Week, which focuses on young directors, has seven women among its 13 entries. There is hope this will continue, with the recent appointment of film expert Ava Cahen as the new head of the independent strand.

Born in 1986, she is the youngest person ever to hold the position and will take over after this year's event from director Charles Tesson.

Out of competition -

There is much to look forward to outside the competitions, too.

'Peaceful' by French director Emmanuelle Bercot stars that great icon of Gallic cinema Catherine Deneuve, who suffered a minor stroke during filming but is making a triumphant return to the Croisette.

There is also excitement over the premiere of Charlotte Gainsbourg's directing debut, a documentary about her mother Jane Birkin ('Jane'). And US actor-director Jodie Foster, of "Taxi Driver" and "Silence of the Lambs" fame, will receive an honorary Palme.

Foster did not mince her words during her last visit to Cannes in 2016, saying Hollywood studio bosses still saw women directors as "too great a risk to take". But she also said she opposed the idea of setting a quota for female representation. "We're not talking about junior executives," she said. He has won awards all over, including Oscars for "A Separation" and "The Salesman", which also won best screenplay at Cannes. - 'Tout s'est Bien Passe' (Everything Went Fine) by Francois Ozon, France - Featuring French stars Sophie Marceau and Charlotte Rampling, France's prolific and eclectic director Francois Ozon tells the story of a woman asked by her father to help him die. - 'Tre Piani' (Three Floors) by Nanni Moretti, Italy - Exactly 20 years after winning the Palme d'Or with "The Son's Room" and nine years after heading the main jury at Cannes, Moretti is back with his first-ever adaptation of a novel, which looks at three families who live on three different floors, in three chapters. - 'Titane' by Julia Ducournau, France - Starring French veteran actor Vincent Lindon, "Titane" is the second feature after "Grave" by horror film specialist Ducournau, which she reportedly wrote in six weeks between two Covid-19 lockdowns. - 'Red Rocket' by Sean Baker, US - The comedy-drama by indie filmmaker Baker features Simon Rex as an over-the-hill porn star who returns to his hometown in Texas, where he is not very welcome, and hopes to build on the success of "The Florida Project". - 'Petrov's Flu' by Kirill Serebrennikov, Russia - An alcohol-fuelled stroll by a cartoonist and his friend in post-Soviet Russia brings back childhood memories that get mixed up with the present. Serebrennikov is unable to attend Cannes due to a criminal conviction, widely seen as punishment for his political views. - 'France' by Bruno Dumont, France - The gritty director adapts a novel by Charles Peguy, killed in World War I, updating it to chart the fall from grace of a star TV reporter in contemporary France. - 'Nitram' by Justin Kurzel, Australia - Following a smash hit adaptation of "Macbeth" starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard and a less successful adaptation of video game "Assassin's Creed", the Australian director looks at events leading up to the Port Arthur mass shooting in Tasmania that led to gun control reforms. - 'Memoria' by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Thailand - Tilda Swinton stars in the slow-burn director's first film in English. It comes 11 years after he won the Palme d'Or for the dreamlike "Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives". Shot in Colombia, "Memoria" follows a Scottish horticulturist as she tries to understand strange sounds in the night. - 'Lingui' by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, Chad - Set in the outskirts of N'Djamena, "Lingui" tells the story of an adolescent whose unwanted pregnancy puts her in conflict with her country's traditions and the law. Haroun lives in France, but most of his films have been produced in his birth country of Chad, which he left during unrest in the 1980s. - 'Paris 13th District' by Jacques Audiard, France - Audiard won the Palme in 2015 for "Dheepan", but is best-known abroad for "The Prophet" and "Rust and Bone". His latest is based on three graphic novels by US author Adrian Tomine and set in a mixed neighbourhood of Paris. It features four young people who are sometimes friends, sometimes lovers, and sometimes both. - 'The Restless' by Joachim Lafosse, Belgium - Starring Leila Bekhti and Damien Bonnard, the film tells the story of a couple under stress due to Bonnard's character suffering from bipolar disorder, and who do their best to protect their child. - 'The Divide' by Catherine Corsini, France - Two decades after her film "Replay" entered the Cannes competition, Corsini returns with a drama about a couple stuck in a hospital that comes under siege during a violent Paris demonstration inspired by the Yellow Vests movement. - 'The Worst Person in the World' by Joachim Trier, Norway - A film about love and its complications, Trier's latest concludes an accidental trilogy of Oslo-based films exploring exclusion and isolation. It tells the story of Julie, turning 30 and looking for answers in a new relationship, only to be let down by reality. - 'Hytti No 6' (Compartment No 6) by Juho Kuosmanen, Finland - Two strangers -- a Finnish woman and a gloomy Russian -- share a train compartment winding its way up to the Arctic circle in a road movie set against the backdrop of the 1980s Soviet Union. Kuosmanen hopes to follow the success of his charming, low-key boxing flick, "The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki". - 'Casablanca Beats' by Nabil Ayouch, France-Morocco - Ayouch rocks the suburbs of Casablanca with a film about young people seeking an outlet through hip-hop in an underprivileged neighbourhood made infamous in 2003 after a group of radicalised local youth carried out suicide bombings in the city. - 'Ha'Berech' (Ahed's Knee) by Nadav Lapid, Israel - After winning prizes in Locarno, Cannes and Berlin for his first three films, Lapid explores two battles waged by an Israeli director, one against the death of freedom and one against the death of a mother, both of which are doomed to failure. - 'Drive My Car' by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Japan - An aging, widowed actor looking for a chauffeur ends up hiring a 20-year-old woman. Things go wrong between them at first, but then a special relationship emerges. - 'Bergman Island' by Mia Hansen-Love, France - An American film-making couple spends a summer on Faro, the windswept Baltic island that inspired Ingmar Bergman. Reality and fiction start to blur as the weeks pass. - 'A Felesegem Tortenete' (The Story of My Wife) by Ildiko Enyedi, Hungary - Featuring France's Lea Seydoux, who features in three of the films in competition this year, Enyedi's film kicks off with a bet by a sea captain that he'll marry the first woman who walks in. It follows Enyedi's Golden Bear win at Berlin in 2017 for "On Body and Soul". - 'Flag Day' by Sean Penn, US - Star actor Penn again steps behind the camera for a film about a conman whose daughter struggles to come to terms with his choice of profession. Penn stars alongside his own daughter Dylan, as well as Josh Brolin.

Cannes 2021: Films competing for Cannes Palme d'Or

If there's an early theme to this year's Cannes Film Festival, it might be resurrections.

US stars Sean Penn and Val Kilmer are looking for one and French icon Catherine Deneuve is guaranteed one just by her presence, while director Oliver Stone is hoping to resuscitate some of his tinfoil-hat theories about the assassination of JFK.

And, of course, the 74th edition is all about the rebirth of cinema more generally, after last year's festival was cancelled by the pandemic.

Here are five key things to look out for when the world's leading film showcase kicks off on Tuesday.

- Queen Catherine -

France cannot wait to see its beloved Deneuve climb the famed stairs of the Palais des Festivals in Cannes once more.

Eighteen months after being hospitalised with a minor stroke, the 77-year-old legend will be back to promote her 139th film, "Peaceful".

Deneuve is synonymous with the festival, having first mounted the stairs for the 1964 Palme d'Or-winning "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and appearing most recently at the last edition in 2019 to present the top award to South Korea's Bong Joon-ho for "Parasite".

- Sean Penn's redemption? -

Can the brooding actor-director pull off a comeback after his nightmarish appearance at the festival in 2016?

His film "The Last Face", a romance between two humanitarians against the backdrop of an African war, was booed mercilessly when it competed for the Palme that year and was torn to shreds by critics, marking the low-point of an incredible career.

The 60-year-old will be hoping to regain some glory with "Flag Day", about a con man's tricky relationship with his child, starring himself and real-life daughter Dylan.

- Val: pain and glory -

Hankies at the ready for "Val", the tragic tale of what happened to one of the biggest stars of 1980s and 1990s Hollywood.

Kilmer had some huge roles early on, from the Iceman in "Top Gun" to Jim Morrison in "The Doors".

But then things started to go wrong, with a series of stinkers like "Batman Forever" and a growing reputation as a prima donna. And then came cancer of the throat and a tracheotomy that has robbed him of his speech.

Now on the mend, his story is not yet over, with the Iceman set to return this autumn in "Top Gun: Maverick".

- Oliver Stone's JFK obsession -

Before people got excited about Hillary Clinton's paedophile dungeon and Bill Gates implanting computer chips into everyone's arms, there was the obsession with who really killed US president John F Kennedy.

No one has done more to shift the blame away from Lee Harvey Oswald than Oliver Stone, who turned the multitude of theories into a gripping drama starring Kevin Costner in 1991's "JFK".

Thirty years later, he's back at it with a new documentary, "JFK: Through the Looking Glass" that promises to rake over some recently released information about everyone's favourite conspiracy.

- Wes Anderson's family of stars -

One film in particular is going to keep the photographers busy at Cannes.

"The French Dispatch", the latest from king of quirk Wes Anderson, somehow crowbars in yet more stars alongside his usual menagerie of regulars.

His 10th film, in competition for the Palme d'Or, features Timothee Chalamet, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Lea Seydoux, three-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand, and of course Bill Murray, among others.

Cannes: the resurrections of Deneuve, Penn and JFK

The Cannes Film Festival returns next week, promising to bury the long months of darkness and solitude under an avalanche of celebrity, champagne and chin-stroking arthouse cinema.

It is billed as nothing less than a resurrection. "Cinema is not dead!" festival supremo Thierry Fremaux declared last month.

It is the first major fully-fledged film festival since the pandemic, and a truckload of Hollywood stars -- from Timothee Chalamet to Nicole Kidman to Matt Damon -- are expected on the Croisette between July 6 and 17.

It's not quite a return to normal, of course, even if France's Covid numbers have been steadily improving and most restrictions lifted.

There will be no "bises" -- the French-style peck on the cheeks -- at the top of the fabled steps to the Palais des Festivals.

And some of the glitz will be toned down, with many after-parties cancelled and the big galas cutting their invite lists in half to meet social distancing guidelines.

Organisers are also slowly waking up to the fact that the sight of celebrities and moguls arriving on private jets and mega-yachts doesn't seem so chic in an age of impending climate disaster.

So this year: no plastic, lots of electric cars, and most symbolic of all: a red carpet that is half the size and made from recycled material.

Stargazing

But our collective need to gawp at megastars on the Cote d'Azur will not be denied.

One film in this year's competition accounts for an outsize share of the celeb-count: Wes Anderson's "The French Dispatch" includes Chalamet, Benicio del Toro, Bill Murray and many more.

Two other stars of that film -- Tilda Swinton and Lea Seydoux -- will be near-ubiquitous on the Croisette, with appearances in a remarkable eight movies between them.

Damon is in town for the premiere of his latest thriller, the Marseilles-set "Stillwater".

But Cannes is all about the filmmakers, and after last year's edition was cancelled due to the pandemic, a particularly rich crop of festival alumni is competing for the Palme d'Or.

Among those submitting themselves to the famously blunt audiences of Cannes are several past winners: Italy's Nanni Moretti with his new film "Tre Piani", France's Jacques Audiard ("Les Olympiades") and Thailand's master of the slow-burn Apichatpong Weerasethakul with his English-language debut ("Memoria").

The opening night film is also a first in English for France's Leo Carax, directing Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard in what is certain to be a bizarre and visually arresting musical about a celebrity couple and their mysterious child, "Annette".

Dutch shockmeister Paul Verhoeven, who made his name with Hollywood megahits like "Robocop" and "Basic Instinct", continues his late run of (slightly) more subtle European fare with "Benedetta" about lesbian nuns in 17th century Italy.

Sean Penn will also be hoping for a personal resurrection after his catastrophic Cannes appearance in 2016, when his Africa-based humanitarian love story "The Last Face" was mercilessly booed.

He is aiming for a warmer reception to "Flag Day", starring himself and his daughter Dylan.

Also in the competition are Iran's two-time Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi, who returns with "A Hero", and Russia's Kirill Serebrennikov, who is unable to attend due to an embezzlement conviction that is widely seen as punishment for criticising Vladimir Putin.

Gender imbalance

The panel judging the 24 entries is headed by US director Spike Lee -- the first time a black man has led the jury -- and includes "The Serpent" star Tahar Rahim and US actress Maggie Gyllenhaal.

With just four female directors in the competition, the festival's tendency to pick the usual (male) suspects of the arthouse elite is once again under scrutiny.

Only one woman has won the top Palme d'Or prize in 73 editions of the festival: Jane Campion for "The Piano" in 1993.

The selection is more balanced in the other sections, however, with over half the entries in the independent Directors' Fortnight and International Critics Week coming from women directors.

US actor-director Jodie Foster will likely field questions on the subject as she picks up an honorary Palme.

There is plenty happening outside the competitions, including a first showing of Oliver Stone's new documentary about the JFK assassination, updating his feature-length conspiracy theory from 1991.

That will play in the new Cannes Premiere section, along with other intriguing documentaries: one about troubled star Val Kilmer ("Val") and Charlotte Gainsbourg's ode to her mother Jane Birkin ("Jane").

Cinema glitz returns with a reborn Cannes

The Cannes Film Festival 2021 will play tribute to veteran Italian director Marco Bellocchio.

Marco will receive this year’s honourary Palme d’Or at the Cannes festival’s closing ceremony on July 17. A day prior, the director will also screen his latest, the documentary ‘Marx Can Wait’, as part of Cannes’ non-competition Cannes Premiere section.

Marco Bellocchio is the man behind some classic films like ‘The Traitor’ (2019), ‘Vincere’ (2009), and ‘The Nanny’ (1999).

The 81-year-old Italian director is credited with pioneering a new wave of Italian cinema in the mid-1960s. It started with his debut feature, the cult film ‘Fists in the Pocket’ (1965), which broke from the traditions of Italian Neo-realism to embrace more genre-influenced drama.

Bellocchio joins fellow Palme d’Or honoree Jodie Foster, who will receive Cannes’ lifetime achievement award at the opening ceremony of the 74th Cannes Film Festival on July 6, 2021.

Cannes Film Festival 2021 to pay tribute to Italian director Marco Bellocchio

The latest curveball in US comedian Bill Murray's career -- a film about his show tunes collaboration with a German cellist -- was among the additions to the Cannes Film Festival announced Thursday. Murray, who has had one of the least predictable careers in film history, teamed up with cellist Jan Vogler in 2017 to perform a number of US theatrical standards.

A resulting concert film, 'New Worlds, the Cradle of a Civilization' will have a special screening at the festival, which has been postponed from its usual May slot to July 6-17.

Also appearing outside the official competition is the latest animated feature from Ari Folman, Israeli director of the beloved "Waltz with Bashir" that electrified Cannes in 2008.

Folman's latest, "Where is Anne Frank?" follows the journey of Kitty, the imaginary friend from Frank's renowned diary of her time trying to evade the Nazis as a child in wartime Amsterdam.

Enfant terrible Gaspar Noe is also returning to Cannes, where his transgressive films, from the drug-fuelled 'Climax' to the 3D pornfest 'Love', have made him a fixture at the world's leading film get-together.

Bill Murray and Anne Frank fill out bumper Cannes edition

Sean Penn and Wes Anderson will be among heavy hitters vying for the Cannes Film Festival's top award in July when the cinema showcase is hoping international stars will be able to mingle at parties on the French riviera again.

Organisers of the world`s biggest film festival said on Thursday they were confident of being able to host dinners and beach screenings alongside the main competition as some COVID-19 measures are lifted in France.

Cannes Film Festival 2021 lineup to feature record number of women directors

Usually held in May, the extravaganza was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, and will run between July 6 and 17 this year. While there will be no "kissing at the top of the red carpet", restrictions should not be too onerous, festival director Thierry Fremaux said.

Travellers from some countries such as Britain are still facing quarantine measures in France for now, but there will no longer be evening curfews.
After a Hollywood-heavy edition of Cannes in 2019, the comeback line-up features fewer big-name U.S. stars.

The selection competing for the Palme d`Or features some films anchored in COVID-19 times, with characters wearing face masks.
"Cinema will also have been marked by this," Fremaux told a news conference. French director Catherine Corsini`s "La Fracture" is set in a hospital in the present day.

OZON TO AUDIARD

Highlights will include 'The French Dispatch' by Wes Anderson, known for his quirky 'The Royal Tenenbaums' and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'. Anderson`s latest film, about a fictional U.S. newspaper office in France starring Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton, has been delayed since 2019.
'Flag Day', a drama directed by Sean Penn, will also among the 24 films competing, with a jury headed by U.S. filmmaker Spike Lee.

Italy`s Nanni Moretti, who won in 2001, returns with 'Tre Piani', while Paul Verhoeven will present 'Benedetta', about a love story in a convent.
Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard star in 'Annette', a musical by Leos Carax that will premiere on the opening night.

French directors Francois Ozon and Jacques Audiard will also be presenting films, as will Iran`s Asghar Farhadi, Russia`s Kirill Serebrennikov and Thailand`s Apichatpong Weerasethakul, who won the Palme d`Or in 2010.

Outside the competition, Oliver Stone will screen a reworked version of his 1991 political thriller 'JFK', with new material. Oscar-winner Jodie Foster, who first walked the red carpet at Cannes as a 13-year-old when she starred in "Taxi Driver", will be presented with an honorary Palme d`Or.

Cannes organisers have long been at loggerheads with streaming giant Netflix, which produces its own films and has shown them some at festivals, but has objected to strict French rules about giving films in competition a cinema release.

Cannes Film Festival 2021 lineup to feature record number of women directors Usually held in May, the extravaganza was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, and will run between July 6 and 17 this year. OZON TO AUDIARD Highlights will include 'The French Dispatch' by Wes Anderson, known for his quirky 'The Royal Tenenbaums' and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'. Slew of auteurs and award-winners for reborn Cannes Italy`s Nanni Moretti, who won in 2001, returns with 'Tre Piani', while Paul Verhoeven will present 'Benedetta', about a love story in a convent. Cannes readies glitzy return with lockdown films in the mix

A rich crop of past Palme d'Or winners and arthouse favourites are set to return to the Cannes Film Festival in July as organisers announced a bumper selection for its competition on Thursday.

Among the 24 directors whose films are heading to the Cote d'Azur for July 6-17 is Sean Penn for his new film 'Flag Day', Italy's Nanni Moretti (winner in 2001) with 'Tre Piani' and France's Jacques Audiard (winner in 2015) with 'Les Oympiades'.

They join three big auteurs that had already been announced: Wes Anderson ('The French Dispatch'), Paul Verhoeven ('Benedetta') and Leos Carax ('Annette').

One silver lining from all the disruption of the past year has been a backlog of cinematic gold that gave organisers some 2,000 films to wade through as they made their selection for the 74th edition of the world's leading film shindig.

Another past Palme winner returning to the Croisette is Thailand's Apichatpong Weerasethakul with his first English-language film 'Memoria', starring Tilda Swinton.

Cannes Film Festival 2021: Attendees will have to be vaccinated or show antigen every 48 hours

Iran's two-time Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi will also return with 'A Hero', while Russia's renowned director Kirill Serebrennikov -- who has lately faced significant pressure from authorities -- will be in competition with 'Petrov's Flu'.

They will face a jury headed by US director Spike Lee, who was set to preside in 2020 before the festival was cancelled by the pandemic.

The opening film was already known: 'Annette' is the first in a decade from French arthouse darling Carax, and his first in English, starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard as a celebrity couple awaiting a mysterious child.

Verhoeven, meanwhile, promises a touch of scandal on the Croisette with his entry, 'Benedetta', about a lesbian nun in a 17th-century Italian convent -- solid ground for the Dutch filmmaker who has often married art and salaciousness with movies like 'Basic Instinct', 'Showgirls' and 'Elle'.

It has been a particularly long wait for Anderson, who was due to present his latest quirky bauble, 'The French Dispatch', at last year's festival.

Filmed in Angouleme in southwest France, it was clearly worth waiting for a proper Gallic launch and could bring a multitude of stars to the red carpet, with Anderson regulars such as Bill Murray and Adrien Brody joined by new additions including Timothee Chalamet, Benicio Del Toro and France's own Lea Seydoux.

- Hopefuls -

Also appearing during the fortnight are some special screenings, appearing outside the main competition.

They include a documentary about the troubled US film star Val Kilmer ('Val') and a new film about 1960s rock stars 'The Velvet Underground' by Todd Haynes.

Oliver Stone will present an update to his 1990s classic film about the Kennedy assassination, having reportedly got hold of some new documents, titled 'JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass'.

Charlotte Gainsbourg will present a film about her mother Jane Birkin, while Oscar winner Tom McCarthy ('Spotlight') will premiere his new action film with Matt Damon, 'Stillwater'.

The organisers have also teased the possibility of a major blockbuster appearing during the fortnight, though confirmed that it will not be the much-delayed new James Bond film, 'No Time To Die'.

The press conference also spoke about the health measures that organisers promise will make the festival safe for the mass of film professionals and press -- some 18,000 have already applied for accreditation, they say.

That is far below the usual attendance because the normally packed movie marketplace is being held separately and online this year.

France's Covid statistics are also currently headed in a reassuring direction and it is due to lift remaining restrictions in time for the event, but organisers say visitors will need proof of vaccination or negative tests every two days during the event.

Slew of auteurs and award-winners for reborn Cannes

Wes Anderson's 'The French Dispatch' and Sean Penn's latest outing will be among movies vying for the top award at the Cannes Film Festival in July, as the cinema showcase plots a red carpet revival and coronavirus restrictions ease up.

The world`s biggest film festival, usually held in May on France`s southern coast, was cancelled last year due to the pandemic and postponed to July this year when it hopes to be able to welcome travellers.

American filmmaker Wes Anderson, known for 'The Royal Tenenbaums' and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel', will present his long-delayed 'The French Dispatch', about a fictional U.S. newspaper office in France starring Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton.

'Flag Day', a drama directed by Sean Penn, will also among the 24 films competing for the Palme d`Or, organizers said.
Heavy hitters such as Italy`s Nanni Moretti, who won in 2001, returns with "Tre Piani", while a handful of young directors will be in the official selection for the first time.

French moviemakers will make up a large part of the competition, though international films, from Japan, Iran and Hungary, will also be in contention.
Evening curfew measures will have been lifted by then in France, although travellers may still face quarantine measures, including those from Britain.

Festival director Thierry Fremaux said there would be parties and dinners, as well as events to give holidaymakers on the Cote d`Azur a chance to enjoy the event, such as screenings on the beach. COVID-19 precautions will still be in force, however.

"We won`t be kissing at the top of the (red carpet) steps," Fremaux said. Oscar-winner Jodie Foster, who first walked the red carpet at Cannes as a 13-year-old when she starred in "Taxi Driver", will be presented with an honorary Palme d`Or.

Wes Anderson, Sean Penn to headline Cannes return

Cannes Film Festival plans to open up this year after being cancelled in 2020 because of the pandemic.

This year, as it gears to open up, organisers of the film festival have planned to keep all security checks in place. They look to safeguard the event by asking for proof of vaccination by attendees, or on-site testing every 48 hours for pass holders showing up without a single or double shot.

On keeping the event secure, Cannes organisers said delegates will need to show either a certificate “demonstrating full vaccination of a vaccine recognised by the European Medicines Agency,” a negative PCR or antigen test result that’s no longer than 48 hours old, or a proof of immunity via a positive antibody test or RT-PCR test that is dated no less than 15 days, and completed under six months ago.

Festival-goers will need to show a negative PCR or antigen every 48 hours for the duration of the event.

“In accordance with the French government’s provisions, in order to safeguard all participants’ health and safety, admission to the festival will be subject to daily health pass checks,” Cannes organizers said in a statement.

“If you would like to have a test done upon arriving in Cannes or during your stay, you can visit the festivals’ partner laboratory center within striking distance of the Palais des Festivals,” the festival added.

Cannes Film Festival 2021: Attendees will have to be vaccinated or show antigen every 48 hours

Veteran actress and filmmaker Jodie Foster will be given the honourary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year. The decision was announced by the organisers on Wednesday.

The 58-year-old star will also be the guest of honour at the opening ceremony where she will given the special award.

Foster joins an impressive list of alumni like Jeanne Moreau, Bernardo Bertolucci, Jane Fonda, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Manoel de Oliveira, Jean-Pierre Leaud, Agnes Varda and Alain Delon who have all been awarded the special honour in past years.

The festival praised Foster, a two-time Oscar-winning actor, director and producer, for her "brilliant artistic journey, a unique personality with a modest yet strong commitment to some of the major issues of our time."

It was announced earlier that filmmaker Spike Lee will head the competition jury.

Leos Carax` `Annette` with Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard will world debut on premiere night.

"Cannes is a celebration to which I owe so much; it has totally transformed my life," said Foster, who originally went to Cannes in 1976, as a 13 years old, for the world debut of Martin Scorsese`s `Taxi Driver,` which won the Palme d`Or.

"Although I had already directed before, my first time on the Croisette was a defining moment for me. Showcasing one of my films here has always been a dream of mine. I am flattered that Cannes thought of me and I am very honored to be able to share a few words of wisdom or tell an adventure or two with a new generation of filmmakers," said Foster, who has had seven films, as actor or director, which were presented at the Cannes Film Festival.

Cannes president Pierre Lescure said, "Jodie Foster has provided us with an amazing gift by coming to commend the return of the festival on the Croisette. Her aura is unparalleled: she embodies modernity, the radiant intelligence of independence and the need for freedom."

Cannes chief Thierry Fremaux added in a statment, "Jodie never stops to reevaluate herself. She inquiries with her piercing look to learn from others and is willing to step back from her beliefs in order to forge new morals -- do what is fair."

"A thought that she strives to pass on in the choices she makes like an actress and director, and which makes her so valuable during these befuddling times. We will honour her with warmth and admiration," noted Fremaux.

Wes Anderson's 'The French Dispatch' to compete for Palme d'Or at Cannes

Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, known for garish but smart classics such as "Basic Instinct" and "Starship Troopers", will compete at this year's Cannes Film Festival with "Benedetta", organisers said Wednesday.

The film was considered a likely entry at last year's festival, which was ultimately cancelled due to the pandemic.

Verhoeven, who has often courted controversy with his graphic depictions of sex and violence, has taken part in several competitions at Cannes but never been awarded.

"Benedetta" certainly seems topical, set in a 15th century Italian convent hit by the plague, focusing on the life of a lesbian nun with miraculous powers.

It stars Belgian actress Virginie Efira, who also appeared in Verhoeven's critically acclaimed "Elle" in 2016, as well as British arthouse favourite Charlotte Rampling.

It is the second film to be confirmed for this year's festival, which has been postponed to July 6-18 from its usual slot in May.

The other is "Annette" starring Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver by French director Leos Carax, which will open the festival.

Hollywood filmmaker Spike Lee will be heading the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. Lee was to preside over the festival last year which was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The prestigious film festival is scheduled to take place between July 6-17 this year and Lee is the first Black to head the jury at the festival.

Lee was also supposed to have his directorial venture `Da 5 Bloods` play out of the competition last year, marking Netflix`s return to the Official Selection.
Several of Lee`s films, including 1986`s `She`s Gotta Have It`, 1989`s `Do the Right Thing` and 2018`s `BlacKkKlansman`, has premiered in Cannes.

The festival was initially set to take place between May 11-22, but those dates didn`t seem feasible as France is still coping with the second wave of COVID-19.

In its release announcing Lee as jury president, the film festival`s organisers said the "12 summer days of the next festival will be a celebration of art and creativity, and full of long-awaited reunions."

The festival also said, "preparations are in full swing with a large number of films which are being viewed by the selection committee."

More details about the 74th edition will be unveiled in the coming weeks. The Official Selection and the full jury will be unveiled in early June.

In its release announcing Lee as jury president, the film festival`s organisers said the "12 summer days of the next festival will be a celebration of art and creativity, and full of long-awaited reunions." The festival also said, "preparations are in full swing with a large number of films which are being viewed by the selection committee." More details about the 74th edition will be unveiled in the coming weeks. The Official Selection and the full jury will be unveiled in early June.

Spike Lee to lead 2021 Cannes Film Festival jury

As the ongoing COVID pandemic continues to halt and challenge the planning of big events, Cannes film festival is planning for a pre-festival event, months before the physical event.

The Cannes Film Festival Marche section, which traditionally runs alongside the festival, is reportedly asking the organisers to set up a three-to-four day “pre-screenings” event in May or June, looking at the industry demand. The event is a major market for the industry.

"We're just evaluating this option, talking with the sellers and distributors. No decision yet," Jerome Paillard, executive director of Cannes Marché du Film, told THR in an email on Tuesday.

The pre-festival event will be virtual, with no traditional physical market on offer. This year's event was postponed from May 11 to 22 to July 6 to 17. As July is a late date for agents and producers, an earlier event will lead them to sell early enough to allow for summer shoots and, for finished films, to premiere movies in the key summer months.

Last year, Cannes was cancelled due to the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic and was replaced by a low-key event in October showcasing short films but without the presence of A-list movie stars, directors and producers. Still, there is uncertainty on the July dates due to the continuing COVID-19 crisis.
