BRICS non-member meeting: Pak blames 'one member' for blocking participation

While hosting the BRICS summit on Thursday (June 23), Chinese President Xi Jinping in his opening address called on the five-member grouping (China, Russia, India, Brazil and South Africa) to oppose "the abuse" of sanctions, in an apparent jibe at the United States.

The success of such reality-based and content-driven South Indian films raise the question: Where does Hindi cinema fit into the picture?

Hindi cinema is frequently referred to as Indian cinema by the Indian and international media and film historians.

Asuran has won a lot of praise since its release. The film, directed by Vetrimaaran won three National Awards. The film is produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu under V Creations.

‘Asuran’ is a period film featuring Dhanush and Manju Warrier in lead roles. The film is based on Poomani's novel titled Vekkai. The blockbuster film features Ken Karunas, Teejay Arunasalam, Pasupathy, and Prakash Raj in supporting roles.

Dhanush was last seen in director Karthik Subbaraj's ‘Jagame Thandhiram’, which premiered directly on Netflix. The Russian envoy to India Nikolay Kudashev has said that the annual summit has been planned for this fall. India is the current chair of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) grouping. Kudashev, speaking at a virtual event hosted by the Confederation of Young Leaders (CYL), said, "in the framework of multilateral efforts to address existing challenges and threats, BRICS remains a major factor in international politics and economics". "Annual BRICS summit is planned for this fall. At the previous BRICS summit, our leaders have reaffirmed the importance of BRICS people-to-people contact in enhancing friendship between our relations, especially the younger generation." On June 1, India hosted the BRICS foreign ministers' meet virtually. With India as the chair of the grouping, nearly 50 events have been held and many more are scheduled during the rest of the year. It is the third time India is holding the BRICS chairship after 2012 and 2016. Kudashev highlighted that both countries remain committed to "further expand our financial cooperation and extend the use of national currency in bilateral and international trade", pointing out that Russia is the "only foreign country so deeply involved in Indian nuclear power sector contributing to the national energy security". Russia has been involved in Kudankulam nuclear power plant. He said, "we would be very encouraged with regard to the decision of the Indian government on the second site for construction of more nuclear reactors of Russian design". Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, both countries supported each other. Kudashev said, "in the hour of need, India helped Russia with the supplies of anti-virus medicines. Russia on its part provided a huge part of humanitarian assistance to India". Russia supplied 20 tonnes of life-saving equipment and medicines to India earlier this year to deal with the crisis. These are included oxygen production unit, lunge ventilating machines and Remdesivir. On coronavirus vaccines, India will be manufacturing the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine. Sputnik V, along with Covishield and Covaxin are the only three vaccines authorized in India. Chairman of the Confederation of Young Leaders, Suwan, speaking at the event extended his gratitude to Russia for the outreach amid the pandemic and said, "right from oxygen concentrators to Sputnik vaccine such efforts to extend India a lifeline underscores the need to strengthen popular support for the long-term development in of the Russia-India relations."

BRICS summit planned for this fall: Russian Envoy Nikolay Kudashev

In a significant step forward, the BRICS grouping comprising of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa have backed the India-South Africa joint proposal for COVID-19 vaccine waiver at the World Trade Organisation(WTO).

The grouping decided to back the proposal at the BRICS foreign ministers virtual meet which was held under the chairmanship of India.

The joint statement after the meet said that the ministers "reaffirmed the need to use all relevant measures during the pandemic" which included "supporting ongoing consideration in WTO on a COVID-19 vaccine Intellectual Property Rights waiver" and "use of flexibilities of the TRIPS agreement and the Doha Declaration on TRIPS Agreement and Public Health".

BRICS is one of the first global multilateral groupings to come in the support of the proposal. The US earlier this year had extended its support to it leading to other countries in the West, including the European Union(EU) dropping its hesitation on the proposal.

The proposal once accepted means large scale production of vaccines at a time when the world is facing serious storages amid the pandemic which is now in its second year.

The BRICS also called for urgent reforms of global bodies such as the United Nations and in a first released "BRICS Joint Ministerial Statement on Strengthening and Reforming of the Multilateral System".

The joint statement said that they were "recommitted to instil new life in the discussions on the reform of the UN Security Council and continue the work to revitalise the General Assembly".

BRICS has two permanent members of the UNSC - China and Russia. While calls have been growing for urgent reforms at the top at the UN body, progress has been slow.

BRICS has agreed on six principles as guides amid growing calls for multilateral institutions.

The principles call for "more meaningful participation of developing and least developed countries, especially Africa, in global decision-making processes" and make it "better attuned to contemporary realities."

The statement not only focuses on reforms at the UN but also the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank (WB), World Trade Organization (WTO), World Health Organization (WHO).

The meet also discussed Afghanistan and Myanmar. The FMs called for an immediate, permanent, and comprehensive ceasefire in Afghanistan, while on Myanmar it voiced support to the recent ASEAN initiative and the implementation of its five-point consensus.

India as the chair of the grouping will hold the summit later this year. So far 50 events have taken place under its chairmanship. It is the third time India is holding the BRICS chairmanship after 2012 and 2016.
