Gravitas: Boris Johnson faces no-trust vote

The fate of Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be decided sooner than anyone thought. Tory MPs begin a no-confidence motion against Johnson today.

Boris Johnson faces vote on his leadership

British PM Boris Johnson has convened his cabinet today, a day after he survived the challenge to his leadership. In all, 211 Tory MPs voted for him while 148 were against which means PM Boris Johnson cannot be challenged for almost an year.

Boris Johnson wins no-confidence vote: We can move on and focus on what matters

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday (June 6) averted a major scare as he won confidence vote to retain his position as prime minister of the country. The confidence vote was triggered by his own colleagues in Conservative Party.

After the win, Boris Johnson termed it a 'convincing' and 'decisive' victory. Johnson needed 180 votes to win. He got 211.

148 MPs voted against Johnson.

After the vote, Johnson said that the result would enable the nation to move on from questions about his leadership.

"I think it's a convincing result, a decisive result and what it means is that as a government we can move on and focus on the stuff that I think really matters to people," he told reporters.

"We can focus on what we're doing to help people with the cost of living, what we're doing to clear the COVID backlogs, what we're doing to make streets and communities safer by putting more police out," he said.

"It gives us the opportunity to continue to unite, to level up, and to strengthen our economy."

The confidence vote was triggered by the 'partygate' scandal. Johnson had faced quite a heat over alcohol-fuelled parties that had taken place at his Downing Street residence just when most of the nation was in strict Covid lockdown.

Johnson's win did not elicit favourable reaction from all corners of British politics.

Kier Starmer, the leader of Labour Party said that Conservative party was just 'propping up' Boris Johnson.

The choice is clearer than ever before: Divided Tories propping up Boris Johnson with no plan to tackle the issues you are facing.Or a united Labour Party with a plan to fix the cost of living crisis and restore trust in politics. Labour will get Britain back on track," he tweeted.

A 'decisive' win, says UK PM Johnson after winning confidence vote

The fate of Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be decided sooner than anyone thought it has been confirmed that tory MPs will hold a no-confidence motion against Johnson today.

UK Partygate scandal: Boris Johnson to face vote on his leadership

Boris Johnson, 'the man who always gets away with it' wins no-confidence vote

UK PM Boris Johnson has won the crucial confidence vote in British Parliament. The vote was triggered by his own Conservative Party over the 'partygate'; alochol fuelled parties organised at Johnson's Downing Street residence when much of Britain was under strict Covid lockdown. The partygate had caused great backlash against Boris Johnson. The British premier had to repeatedly apologise to the parliament.

Johnson got support from 211 MPs while 148 MPs said that they did not have confidence in him.

Johnson's position appeared perilous in the run up to the vote as several Conservative MPs had submitted letters calling on Johnson to resign from the position of prime minister. However, he appears to have averted the danger to his post.

A total of 180 votes were enough to ensure survival of Johnson.

Reuters had reported in the run up to the vote that Johnson enjoyed support from 145 Conservative MPs.

Things looked tough for Johnson as 'partygate scandal' had tarnished his public image. He was booed at a ceremony two days ago during celebrations of Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee.

Johnson had tried to keep a brave face in the run up to the confidence vote

A spokesperson for Johnson's Downing Street office had said the vote would "allow the government to draw a line and move on" and that the prime minister welcomed the opportunity to make his case to lawmakers.

Top 10 news: Johnson faces no-confidence motion, Musk threatens to withdraw Twitter bid, and more

When Boris Johnson won a landslide election victory for his Conservative Party in 2019, he loomed as a colossus over British politics, the man who had redrawn the country’s political map with a vow to “get Brexit done.”

With an 80-seat majority in Parliament, the greatest amassed by a Conservative leader since Margaret Thatcher in 1987, Johnson seemed assured of five years in power. Some analysts predicted a comfortable decade in No. 10 Downing St. for Johnson, the most reliable vote-getter in British politics.

Now, less than three years after that triumph, Johnson’s future was hanging by a thread Monday. Rebels in his party have called for a no-confidence vote that could cost him his job; even if he wins and clings to his position, it could cripple him as an effective and credible leader. He faces that vote from his own party Monday night.

It is one of the most head-spinning reversals of fortune in modern British political history. What happened?

To some extent, Johnson’s standing crumbled because of the same baffling mix of strengths and foibles that propelled his rise: rare political intuition offset by breathtaking personal recklessness; a sense of history that was not matched by a corresponding sense of how he should conduct himself as a leader; uncanny people skills vitiated by a transactional style that earned him few allies and left him isolated at dangerous moments.

It is that last quality, analysts say, that made Johnson so vulnerable to the setbacks he has suffered. With no underlying ideology beyond Brexit and no network of political friends, the prime minister lost the support of lawmakers in his party when it became clear they could not count on him to win the next election.

“Johnson’s such an accomplished escape artist, and his colleagues so craven and cowardly that you can’t rule out him living to fight another day,” said Tim Bale, a professor of politics at the Queen Mary University of London. “But for what precisely? ‘There’s no there there,’ as the saying goes.”

Johnson, after all, is the politician who decided to back Brexit after writing two columns — one making the case for leaving the European Union; the other arguing against it — the night before announcing his position. He won in 2019 by promising to “Get Brexit done,” but having accomplished that goal within months of the election, he often seemed like a prime minister without a plan.

Events, as another British prime minister, Harold Macmillan, once put it, have also played a role. Like other world leaders, Johnson was thrown off course by the coronavirus pandemic, his government upended by a rolling health crisis, in which he played a highly visible but not always reassuring role.

Johnson reacted late to the looming threat of the virus, imposing a lockdown on the country a week after neighbouring European countries. That delay, critics argued, made the first wave of the pandemic worse in Britain than elsewhere. In April 2020, with the virus circulating in Downing Street, Johnson himself contracted COVID-19, ended up in an intensive care unit and nearly died.

But Johnson also pushed for Britain to be a pioneer in developing a vaccine. When Oxford University and AstraZeneca produced one, he rolled it out faster than almost any other major country. He also made a fateful decision — one later copied by other leaders — to reopen society after a significant percentage of the population had been vaccinated. Britons, he said, must learn to live with COVID.

It was during the darkest days of the pandemic that the seeds of Johnson’s current troubles were sown. While the rest of the country was enduring stifling lockdowns, the prime minister and his top aides were taking part in social gatherings at Downing Street that violated their own lockdown restrictions.

The first reports of illicit parties emerged late last November, prompting Johnson to issue a blanket denial that any laws had been broken. A subsequent police investigation found that was not true: Johnson himself was fined for attending his own birthday party in violation of the rules.

Allies of Johnson argue that “Partygate,” as the London tabloids nicknamed it, is a trivial distraction at a time when Europe is confronting its first major land war since World War II. The prime minister swiftly staked out a position as Ukraine’s staunchest defender, shipping powerful weapons to its army and placing regular phone calls to his new friend, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

At first, the war eclipsed the scandal, giving Johnson the chance to wrap himself in a statesman’s mantle. But as the fighting ground on, disenchantment resurfaced at home. London’s Metropolitan Police levied fines, and an internal investigation by a senior civil servant painted a lurid portrait of partying in the heart of government.

The taint of moral hypocrisy corroded the prime minister’s popularity with the public. On Friday, when he and his wife Carrie Johnson climbed the steps to St. Paul’s Cathedral for a thanksgiving service in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne, he was roundly booed by the crowd. It was an omen.

Beyond that, the economic winds began blowing against Johnson. The supply-chain disruptions from the pandemic — combined with price shocks on food and fuel after Russia’s invasion — drove inflation into double digits and raised the spectre of “stagflation.”

The last time Britain faced that, its Labour government went down to a crushing defeat against Thatcher’s Conservatives. The prospect of history repeating itself helps explain why lawmakers are turning against Johnson.

The 2019 Conservative victory was fueled by winning seats in longtime Labour districts in the country’s Midlands and industrial north, known colloquially as the “red wall.” But as Johnson himself acknowledged after the victory, the Tories had rented these seats, not won them in perpetuity.

Instead of appealing to those new Tory voters with innovative policies, Johnson lurched from scandal to scandal. In addition to Partygate, the prime minister became embroiled in an uproar over the expensive refurbishment of his apartment in Downing Street, which was funded by a Conservative donor.

He defended a Conservative lawmaker who was accused of lobbying improperly while in office and then had to back down, a humiliating setback that presaged some of the troubles to come within his own party. He got caught up in a vicious and damaging public feud with his former chief adviser, Dominic Cummings.

By themselves, these issues might not have been enough to trip up a politician known for his Houdini-like escapes. But against an economic backdrop that the head of the Bank of England described as “apocalyptic,” they contributed to fears in the party that the Conservatives face a ferocious voter backlash.

“All we can say with any level of certainty is that ordinary Brits are going to find it tough going economically for the rest of this year — and probably well into the next,” Bale said. “And that spells trouble for the Tories, Johnson or no Johnson.”

When Boris Johnson won a landslide election victory for his Conservative Party in 2019, he loomed as a colossus over British politics, the man who had redrawn the country’s political map with a vow to “get Brexit done.” With an 80-seat majority in Parliament, the greatest amassed by a Conservative leader since Margaret Thatcher in 1987, Johnson seemed assured of five years in power. ‘There’s no there there,’ as the saying goes.” Johnson, after all, is the politician who decided to back Brexit after writing two columns — one making the case for leaving the European Union; the other arguing against it — the night before announcing his position. The supply-chain disruptions from the pandemic — combined with price shocks on food and fuel after Russia’s invasion — drove inflation into double digits and raised the spectre of “stagflation.” The last time Britain faced that, its Labour government went down to a crushing defeat against Thatcher’s Conservatives. The prospect of history repeating itself helps explain why lawmakers are turning against Johnson. Amid growing criticism over the Partygate scandal, Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson will now face a confidence vote later on Monday (June 6). The Johnson government was accused of hosting alcohol-fueled parties at Downing Street during coronavirus (COVID-19). During that period, such gatherings were not allowed across the nation. When details of such parties were out in public, the Prime Minister face massive backlash. A probe into the lockdown-breaking parties revealed that Johnson participated in the gatherings. Boris will now face a vote of confidence in his leadership after a number of lawmakers in the ruling Conservative Party questioned the British leader. He has apologised but said he would not resign. Now, if Boris loses the vote of confidence, his successor would take over in Downing Street. On the other hand, in case he wins, under the current rules, he will be immune from a further challenge for a year. Notably, he will be safe until the next election, due in 2024. How does the process of confidence vote work? Johnson's fate will be decided by Conservative MPs by secret ballot in a parliamentary committee room. The votes will be immediately counted, with an announcement expected "at a time to be advised". Johnson needs half the votes cast plus one to win. As mentioned, he cannot be challenged again for a year. As per the current scenario, some 359 Conservative MPs are eligible to vote. 54 letters withdrawing support received as UK PM Boris Johnson faces no-trust vote

After 54 of his Tory MPs triggered a contest following a string of scandals, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will face a Conservative Party confidence vote on his leadership Monday.

Graham Brady, chair of the 1922 Committee of Conservative backbench MPs, said, "The threshold of 15% of the parliamentary party seeking a vote of confidence in the leader of the Conservative Party has been exceeded."

"In accordance with the rules, a ballot will be held between 1800 and 2000 (1700 and 1900 GMT) today," he added.

In response, a Downing Street spokesman said that the vote is a chance for Johnson to ''draw a line and move on''.

Boris Johnson may face no-confidence vote for breaking Ministerial code

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson has written to his own ethics chief, clearing himself of breaching the ministerial code of conduct over Partygate.

The United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson's wife Carrie's text messages related to a potential coronavirus (COVID-19) rule-breaking event in the Downing Street flat might get published, the Sunday Times report on May 29. The report added that there is apparently evidence that Carrie had organised a gathering on 19 June 2020 for the PM's 56th birthday. The Johnson government was slammed for organising wine-fulled parties at Downing Street when such gatherings were banned across the country during the lockdown.

The event allegedly held by Carrie was not examined by the Sue Gray inquiry, it is not part of the published report. Meanwhile, Labour has called for a probe. Party's deputy leader Angela Rayner urged Mr Johnson to "come clean".

On June 19, 2020, up to 30 staff were said to have attended a party at Downing Street for Johnson's birthday. During that time, social gatherings were only permitted between six people outside.

As shown in the photos, the country's finance minister Rishi Sunak was also present. The event apparently lasted from 2:25-2:45 pm "throughout which the prime minister was present". He, Sunak and Carrie were all fined for the event by London's Metropolitan Police.

Chaos outside Stad de France ahead of Champions League final

Minutes ahead of kick-off in the Champions League 2021-22 final between Real Madrid and Liverpool in Paris, there was chaos outside the Stad de France where the match was being played. Some fans stormed into the stadium without tickets and some with fake ones trying to force their way into the final. Fans were seen scaling the fences and trying to get inside resulting in a delay of 36 minutes for kick-off.

Tear gas and pepper spray used

French police officials were spotted using tear gas and pepper spray to control the crowd outside the Stad de France. The action unfolded at the Liverpool end where some English fans alleged pepper spray was also used on children. The French police's handling of the situation and their treatment of the away fans in the country has come under the scanner after the incident.

Genuine ticket holders were denied entry

While they feared a stampede and were horrified by scenes outside the stadium, some Liverpool fans were not able to gain entry into the stadium despite having bought expensive tickets for the final before reaching Paris from their respective countries. Gates were blocked by the French officials who denied entry to the fans after the chaos and illegal entry by a host of fans.

What did Liverpool say?

Liverpool were quick to issue a statement condemning the mismanagement by the French authorities at the Stad de France ahead of such a big game. The English club also demanded a formal investigation into the matter after footage of pepper spray and tear gas being used against the fans surfaced on social media.

"We are hugely disappointed at the stadium entry issues and breakdown of the security perimeter that Liverpool fans faced this evening at Stade de France," the club said in a statement.

"This is the greatest match in European football and supporters should not have to experience the scenes we have witnessed tonight. We have officially requested a formal investigation into the causes of these unacceptable issues," it added.

UEFA launches investigation

UEFA on Monday announced that it will conduct an independent investigation on the chaos that broke out at the Champions League final. European football's governing body has appointed Portuguese politician Tiago Brandao Rodrigues to oversee the report, the findings of which will be made public and the course of action will be decided post that.

"Evidence will be gathered from all relevant parties. The findings of the independent report will be made public," UEFA said in its statement.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson slams French authorities

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson slammed the French officials for mistreating the English fans outside the Stad de France ahead of the Champions League final and said the footage which emerged from Paris 'was deeply upsetting and concerning'. Johnson has also demanded a proper investigation into the matter.

“The footage from the Stade de France this weekend was deeply upsetting and concerning. We know many Liverpool fans travelled to Paris in good time to support their team in one of the biggest matches of the season and we are hugely disappointed by how they were treated.

“Fans deserve to know what happened so we are urging UEFA to work closely with the French authorities on a full investigation and to publish those findings," said the spokesperson of Johnson.

Was Sue Gray's Partygate probe report tampered with to save some civil service staff?

United Kingdom prime minister Boris Johnson believes that Ukraine should receive more long-range multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) in order to combat the Russian forces. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is already in its third month and Johnson said that the new ammunition can be key for Kyiv to defend the Donbas region. In an interview with Bloomberg, Johnson said that the MLRS system are important “to defend themselves against this very brutal Russian artillery, and that’s where the world needs to go”. However, the British PM did not commit to sending the M270 rocket system despite repeated requests from Ukraine in front of the NATO countries in the last few weeks.

In the interview, Johnson said that Russia is “continuing to chew through ground” in the Donbas region, making “slow, but I’m afraid palpable, progress”. Ukrainian officials on Friday said that the Russian forces have taken control of the city of Lyman in the country's eastern Donetsk region.
