UK by-election: Tory chief quits after defeat, dealing a blow to Prime Minister Boris Johnson

Major disruption continues meanwhile to the rail network in the UK after Tuesday's strike action. Talks are underway between unions and rail bosses to try and reach a deal in a row over pay reforms and working conditions.

UK Rail Strike disruptions continues, 'it will harm businesses,' says UK PM Boris Johnson

<p>On June 21, tens of thousands of railway workers in the United Kingdom went on strike, putting the country's train network to a halt in the country's worst transit strike in three decades. A 24-hour walkout by some 40,000 cleaners, signalers, maintenance workers, and station staff was underway, with two more scheduled for Thursday and Saturday. Adding to passengers' misery, London Underground subway services were also disrupted by a strike on Tuesday.</p>

<p>As Britain's railways struggle to recover from the coronavirus outbreak, the conflict revolves around salaries, working conditions, and job security. On Tuesday morning, major stations were mostly vacant, with only around 20% of passenger trains set to run.</p>

Lord Geidt: UK ethics adviser quit after being placed in 'impossible and odious position'

Boris Johnson's plan to move illegal migrants to Rwanda has backfired. A European Court grounded the first flight. The Church of England called it an "immoral policy that shames Britain". Reports claim Prince Charles is "appalled" by the move. Palki Sharma tells you more.

Gravitas: Johnson's Rwanda plan backfires

The troubles continue for UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, his ethics adviser Lord Geidt has quit. The resignation came a day after Lord say that there was a legitimate question about whether the Prime Minister broke ministerial rules over partygate.

Trouble mounts for UK PM Boris Johnson after his ethics adviser Lord Geidt quits

<p>British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s second ethics advisor Lord Geidt resigned on Wednesday without an explanation. He was known to be unhappy with the prime minister's handling of Partygate and had suggested he may have broken the ministerial code. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Johnson last week survived a confidence ballot that saw 41% of his lawmakers vote against his leadership after months of scandals and gaffes that have raised questions over his authority to govern and knocked his standing with the public.</p>

<p>Christopher Geidt, the independent adviser on ministers' interests, last month said Johnson must explain why he thought he had not broken the ministerial code after being fined over attending a party during the COVID-19 national lockdown.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"With regret, I feel that it is right that I am resigning from my post," Geidt said in a statement posted on the government's website.</p>

<p>Geidt, whose role was to advise Johnson on matters relating to the ministerial code of conduct, did not give a reason for his resignation. The government said it was surprised by Geidt's decision.</p>

<p>"Whilst we are disappointed, we thank Lord Geidt for his public service. We will appoint a new adviser in due course," a government spokesperson said.</p>

<p>Geidt, the Queen's Private Secretary for 10 years until 2017, was appointed by Johnson in April 2021. The previous holder of the role resigned in 2020 in protest at Johnson's support for a minister who was found to have broken the code.</p>

<p>"The Prime Minister has now driven both of his own hand-picked ethics advisers to resign in despair. If even they can't defend his conduct in office, how can anyone believe he is fit to govern?" opposition Labour Party Deputy Leader Angela Rayner said.</p>

<p>Geidt last year called for his role to have greater authority and independence, but when the government updated the ministerial code last month it said that, while he could now initiate an investigation, he was still required to consult the prime minister.</p>

<p>He had also previously criticised the fact that an exchange of messages had not been disclosed to him when investigating who funded a costly refurbishment of Johnson's Downing Street flat.</p>

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s second ethics advisor Lord Geidt resigned on Wednesday without an explanation. He was known to be unhappy with the prime minister's handling of Partygate and had suggested he may have broken the ministerial code. Johnson last week survived a confidence ballot that saw 41% of his lawmakers vote against his leadership after months of scandals and gaffes that have raised questions over his authority to govern and knocked his standing with the public. Christopher Geidt, the independent adviser on ministers' interests, last month said Johnson must explain why he thought he had not broken the ministerial code after being fined over attending a party during the COVID-19 national lockdown. "With regret, I feel that it is right that I am resigning from my post," Geidt said in a statement posted on the government's website. Geidt, whose role was to advise Johnson on matters relating to the ministerial code of conduct, did not give a reason for his resignation. The government said it was surprised by Geidt's decision. "Whilst we are disappointed, we thank Lord Geidt for his public service. We will appoint a new adviser in due course," a government spokesperson said. Geidt, the Queen's Private Secretary for 10 years until 2017, was appointed by Johnson in April 2021. The previous holder of the role resigned in 2020 in protest at Johnson's support for a minister who was found to have broken the code. If even they can't defend his conduct in office, how can anyone believe he is fit to govern?" opposition Labour Party Deputy Leader Angela Rayner said. Geidt last year called for his role to have greater authority and independence, but when the government updated the ministerial code last month it said that, while he could now initiate an investigation, he was still required to consult the prime minister. He had also previously criticised the fact that an exchange of messages had not been disclosed to him when investigating who funded a costly refurbishment of Johnson's Downing Street flat.
