French President Emmanuel Macron, currently on a US visit, criticised subsidies under its Inflation Reduction Act&nbsp;(IRA) as 'super aggressive.' Macron addressed lawmakers from both political parties in the US. Macron, who arrived in the US for a state visit on Tursday (November 29), will also question US President Joe Biden over the subsidies over which the European Union is not very happy. This is Macron's second state visit to US after taking office.

"This is super aggressive for our business people," Macron said as per AFP.

The White House touts the IRA legislation as a groundbreaking effort to reignite US manufacturing and promote renewable technologies, but European Union governments are crying foul, threatening to launch a trade war by subsidising their own green economy sector.

Macron's blunt assessment, saying he just wanted "to be respected as a good friend," tore some of the veneer off a carefully choreographed state visit intended to celebrate historic US-French ties -- and also tackle the trickier parts of the US-EU transatlantic alliance.

"I don't want to become a market to sell American products because I have exactly the same products as you," said Macron, stressing that France had its own middle class in need of employment.

"And the consequence of the IRA is that you will perhaps fix your issue but you will increase my problem. I'm sorry to be so straightforward," he said.

Despite Macron's apparent combative tone, his visit to US is also being seen as an effort to mend ties between the two powers which reached a historic low after US and UK torpedoed a multi-billion dollar deal between France and Australia to strike their own to provide the latter with nuclear submarines.

After Macron's comments, the White House appeared to be in business as usual mode as it underlined that the state visit was about two presidents' "warm relationship."

US advances in the clean energy economy will help Europeans too, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. The IRA "presents significant opportunities for European firms as well as benefits to EU energy security. This is not a zero sum game."

In a speech later at the French embassy, Macron insisted on the subsidies issue and said they could become a real sticking point in US relations with Europe.

Reports of Americans sending the country’s president a turkey for the holidays date back to the 19th century. While there are rumours of former President Abraham Lincoln being the first one to pardon a turkey after the first family was sent a live turkey for their Christmas meal and&nbsp;his young son asked him to spare the bird. At the time his son had argued that the turkey had the right to live as anyone and the former president granted the bird a “reprieve”.&nbsp;

In 1947, the National Turkey Federation took over the role of becoming the official turkey supplier to the first family and former President Harry Truman was the first one to accept it in a formal turkey presentation ceremony, but in this case, the bird was not spared. It was actually former president John F Kennedy who sent the turkey presented away to a nearby farm in Washington&nbsp;and&nbsp;said, “Let's keep him going” while&nbsp;a Washington Post report used the word “pardon” as well as “reprieve” for it, in 1973.&nbsp;

In the following years, two first ladies Patricia Nixon (1973) and Rosalynn Carter (1978) sent the turkeys they received to the Oxon Hill Children’s Farm and Evans Farm Inn to live in a mini zoo, respectively. In 1981, it had sort of become a norm to send the turkey to a nearby farm in Washington during Reagan’s presidency but no formal pardon was given.&nbsp;

Satirical remarks by presidents

It was former president Bush in 1989 to offer a presidential pardon to a turkey after animal rights groups were picketing outside the White House during the presentation of the bird and he quipped, “Let me assure you, and this fine tom turkey, that he will not end up on anyone's dinner table, not this guy...he’s granted a Presidential pardon as of right now.”&nbsp;

Since then granting the presidential pardon has become somewhat satirical. Notably, the first turkeys which were pardoned were sent to the unfortunately named Frying Pan Park in Herndon, Virginia.&nbsp;

This year as Biden granted clemency to the two turkeys and&nbsp;said that he would keep his remarks short “Nobody likes it when their turkey gets cold”. This was also followed by a shot at the Republican Party and election deniers, “The votes are in. They’ve been counted and verified. There’s no ballot stuffing. There’s no foul play,” he said, referring to the process of how the two turkeys are selected by an online poll.&nbsp;

He added, “The only red wave this season is going to be if German Shepard Commander knocks over the cranberry sauce on our table,” in the context of a “red wave” which was expected by the GOP in the midterm elections.&nbsp;

Last year, Biden pardoned Peanut Butter and Jelly when the number of COVID-19 cases in the country increased&nbsp;during the holidays. “Peanut Butter and Jelly were selected based on their temperament, appearance and, I suspect, vaccination status…instead of getting basted, these two turkeys are getting boosted,” president Biden had said last year.&nbsp;

Where do the turkeys go after being pardoned?&nbsp;

Over the years the turkeys have been sent to universities, farms and even parades. In 2022, for example, Chocolate and Chip were sent off to&nbsp;retirement at the&nbsp;North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina following their appearance at the White House. While previously the birds were sent to Virginia Tech’s Gobblers Rest exhibit in Blacksburg and during the Bush and Obama administrations the turkeys even spent a day at Disneyland to greet the park goers.&nbsp;

US officials said ahead of the meeting that Biden hoped to set up "guardrails" in the relationship with China and to assess how to avoid "red lines" that could push the world's two largest economies into conflict.

US and Indonesia are going to announce a climate finance deal that will provide USD 20 billion to help Indonesia make a switch from coal power. The deal, which is brokered between the US, Japan and Indonesia will be outlined on Tuesday (November 15) on the sidelines of G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia. The deal has culminated after years of talks. It is being touted as the single largest climate finance transaction ever.

According to the deal, Indonesia will commit to a cap of carbon dioxide release from it electricity sector at 290 megatons by 2030. Indonesia will also commit to reaching net-zero emission in the power sector by 2050. By end of this decade, Indonesia will also deploy renewable energy in order that it comprises 34 per cent of all power generation.

“Together, we hope to mobilize more than $20 billion to support Indonesia’s efforts to reduce emissions and expand renewable energy and support workers most affected by the transition away from coal,” said US President Joe Biden at an event with European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen and Indonesian President Joko Widodo. He was quoted by Bloomberg.

As Indonesia makes the switch to renewable energy. More than 10 gigawatts of localised power systems in Indonesia have been planned to be redirected to renewables instead of coal.

This effort “can truly transform Indonesia’s power sector from coal to renewables and support significant economic growth,” said US Special Presidential Envoy John Kerry.

“At every step, Indonesia has communicated the importance of building a clean economy that works for the people of Indonesia and attracts investment. Together, we have a shared vision for that goal,” he added.
