The oil industry “has not met its commitment to invest in America and support the American people,” Biden said. They’re not just making a “fair return”, but they’re making “profits so high it is hard to believe,” he added.

“Their profits are a windfall of war,” he said, referring to the conflict&nbsp;ravaging Ukraine. He further said that these companies have a responsibility to act.

“I think it’s outrageous,” he said. Biden said that if they passed those profits on to consumers, gas prices would register a fall of at least 50 cents.

He threatened that if they fail to do so, they should be ready to pay a higher tax and other penalties.

“If they don’t, they’re going to pay a higher tax on their excess profits, and face other restrictions,” he said.&nbsp;“It’s time for these companies to stop war profiteering.”

The White House will work with Congress to look at these options and others.

This led to protests that have now spread across Iran. The intensity of the protests is such that the protesters are even clashing with security personnel.

Iran government's attitude has been to repeatedly denounce protesters by calling them 'rioters'. President Raisi has on more than one occasion mentioned the word.

Biden had said Friday that "we stand with the citizens, the brave women of Iran".

"It stunned me what it awakened in Iran. It awakened something that I don't think will be quieted for a long, long time," said the US president.

She fired her finance minister and it is widely being perceived that there is a danger of her being forced to step down. There have been dissenting voices from her own Conservative Party.

The White House has refrained from commenting on Truss' problems and when asked about the strength of the US&nbsp;Dollar, Biden said, "I'm not concerned about the strength of the dollar. I'm concerned about the rest of the world."

Earlier on Saturday, Britain's new finance minister Jeremy Hunt said some taxes would go up and tough spending decisions were needed, saying Prime Minister Liz Truss had made 'mistakes' as she battles to keep her job just over a month into her term.

During his interaction with reporters, Biden also spoke about the January 6 committee probe. The probe panel has voted to subpoena former US president Donald Trump in relation to Capitol Hill attack that took place on January 6, 2021.

"I think the testimony and the video are actually devastating and I've been going out of my way not to comment," Biden said.

Biden says he would not comment further on the Jan. 6 committee because he did not want to be perceived as influencing the attorney general, which he said he was not.
