"Since he knew he couldn't reach the politicians responsible, he decided to kill him (Alex W.)," she said, according to AFP news agency.

On Tuesday, Mario N. was convicted of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm, and he was handed a life sentence.

Under German law, those convicted of life sentence can seek parole after 15 years. His defence team were trying to dilute his sentence from murder to manslaughter, but the court rejected their argument.

The company called Cass posted a video in social media where they said that on June 29, around 2000 bottles of beer fell from the side of a delivery truck at an intersection. However, they found help from the local community who took care of the driver and also helped in cleaning the huge spill in the middle of the road. The video showed a group of people helping out the driver and the company said that the road was clear in half an hour.

Chuncheon is the capital city of the Gangwon province, and the spill caused a massive traffic disruption, according to local authorities. However, it did not cause any damages to either people or property and according to reports, traffic went back to normal after the spill was cleared.

Researchers from Nova University Lisbon, Portugal, asked 19 healthy adult men to drink 11 oz (325 ml) of alcoholic or non-alcoholic lager with supper every day for four weeks to better understand the impact of beer on the diversity of gut flora. The alcoholic beers contained 5.2 percent alcohol by volume.

The average age of the guys in the study was 35. They were regarded as moderate drinkers because they consumed the same amount of alcohol before the trial began on average.

The alcohol percentage of the beers was the key distinction between the alcoholic and non-alcoholic varieties that the study's authors made. The guys were instructed not to alter their eating or exercise routines throughout the trial, and they were unaware of the type of beer they were consuming.

Before and after the experiment, their gut flora was examined in blood and stool samples. The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reported the findings.

At the conclusion of the study, researchers discovered that the men's stomachs contained a more varied assortment of microorganisms overall, in addition to no change in weight or BMI and no new indications of heart or metabolism issues in the men's blood.

According to the authors, men also exhibited greater levels of faecal alkaline phosphatase, a marker for improved intestinal health.

The study's authors noted that additional research with more participants is required to support their findings, and that their investigation did not examine the impact of non-alcoholic beer on the variety of gut bacteria in individuals who do not typically consume alcohol.

Although earlier studies only identified advantages to non-alcoholic beer, this study is not the first to associate beer consumption with higher gut bacterial diversity.

Researchers from Nova University Lisbon, Portugal, asked 19 healthy adult men to drink 11 oz (325 ml) of alcoholic or non-alcoholic lager with supper every day for four weeks to better understand the impact of beer on the diversity of gut flora. The alcoholic beers contained 5.2 percent alcohol by volume. The average age of the guys in the study was 35. They were regarded as moderate drinkers because they consumed the same amount of alcohol before the trial began on average. The alcohol percentage of the beers was the key distinction between the alcoholic and non-alcoholic varieties that the study's authors made. The guys were instructed not to alter their eating or exercise routines throughout the trial, and they were unaware of the type of beer they were consuming. Before and after the experiment, their gut flora was examined in blood and stool samples. The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reported the findings. At the conclusion of the study, researchers discovered that the men's stomachs contained a more varied assortment of microorganisms overall, in addition to no change in weight or BMI and no new indications of heart or metabolism issues in the men's blood. According to the authors, men also exhibited greater levels of faecal alkaline phosphatase, a marker for improved intestinal health. The study's authors noted that additional research with more participants is required to support their findings, and that their investigation did not examine the impact of non-alcoholic beer on the variety of gut bacteria in individuals who do not typically consume alcohol. Although earlier studies only identified advantages to non-alcoholic beer, this study is not the first to associate beer consumption with higher gut bacterial diversity. The tourists, who are aged 24 and 25, climbed on to the second tier of the monument in the early hours of Monday morning to have the pleasure. &nbsp;

Spotted at about 5.30 am, these intruders was seen chatting over drinks by a passerby, who alerted police. It is still unclear how they managed to enter the monument as it closes to the public at 4.30 pm. &nbsp;

The Americans told police that they were “just having a beer”, the Italian press reported. &nbsp;

But how old is this tradition of eating cheese? A new study has found out that at least in Europe Blue Cheese and Beer were being consumed since the Iron Age, that is, 2700 years ago.

The research was conducted jointly by many institutions in Austria, Italy and the US.

To reach the conclusion, researchers analysed 2700-year-old stool samples in Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut salt mines in Austria.

In their analysis, the researchers found presence of two fungi in the samples. The fungi Penicillium roqueforti and Saccharomyces cerevisiae are still widely used to make blue cheese and beer. Through a genome-wide analysis the researchers found out that these fungi were used by people in the Iron Age to ferment food

The research team thinks that diet of these yesteryear Europeans involved fibrous foods and was rich in carbohydrates.&nbsp;

The findings about blue cheese and beer have helped the researchers conclude that culinary practices of even our pre-historic ancestors had a degree of sophistication.

Belgium's cafe terraces will not re-open to thirsty&nbsp;beer&nbsp;drinkers for another week but the country's renowned brewers are already all hands to the pump.

Six months after the country went into a second coronavirus lockdown, proud bar owners and&nbsp;beer&nbsp;makers alike are keen to&nbsp;get&nbsp;back to business.

They are confident their countrymen and women have not lost their taste for&nbsp;Belgium's world-famous brews, but the task of getting new barrels into cellars is huge.

And -- with interior service still banned and social distancing in place -- time is running out for some in an industry that has already been hit hard by the pandemic.

"It's a whole machine that needs to be put back on the road," explains Lionel Van Der Haegen, director of the Silly brewery, in the Belgian village of the same name.

The brewery is working hard, but Van Der Haegen fears for the&nbsp;bars&nbsp;that take his&nbsp;beer. "Some have gone bankrupt," he told AFP. "Every day counts. We need to reopen as soon as possible."

Halting&nbsp;Belgium's draft&nbsp;beer&nbsp;cycle in October was a massive logistical exercise it its own right.

In normal times, heavy&nbsp;beer&nbsp;barrels are rolled into bar cellars full and pulled back out when they are empty and hence much lighter.&nbsp;

But after&nbsp;bars&nbsp;were ordered closed at the end of last October, stocks of&nbsp;beer&nbsp;meant to last for several weeks had to be laboriously hauled up and sent back.

Belgium's&nbsp;beer&nbsp;culture is recognised by UNESCO as a heritage of international standing and there was no question for Silly, which prides itself on freshness, of simply storing stale&nbsp;beer.

The unsold beers were disposed of carefully, and now an entirely new batch is under production ahead of May 8,&nbsp;Belgium's&nbsp;reopening&nbsp;day.

"It takes between a month and six weeks between the start of brewing and tasting a Silly&nbsp;beer," said Van Der Haegen, showing AFP around his busy plant.&nbsp;

The Silly brewery dominates the village of just over 7,000. In normal times it produces two-and-a-half million litres per year -- pale ales, saison, abbey beers, fruit beers, Pilseners, wheat beers and Scotch ale.&nbsp;

As AFP toured the plant a local farmer pulled up in a tractor to collect a trailer-load of distillers grains -- dried barley mash left over by the brewing process -- to feed his livestock.

The brewery has been in operation since 1850, employs 24 people at full strength, supplies&nbsp;bars&nbsp;across the region and exports bottled&nbsp;beer&nbsp;as far as the United States and China.

But it's at 70 percent capacity now, and Van Der Haegen does not know how fast things will pick up.&nbsp;

"We're prepared for it, we're building up stock, and we're calling in the teams to set up logistics and prepare orders, call clients, plan deliveries," the director said.

The&nbsp;reopening&nbsp;will be a relief for&nbsp;beer&nbsp;drinkers, as well as bar owners and brewers, but much uncertainty remains. To begin with,&nbsp;bars&nbsp;and restaurants will only open as outdoor terraces.

There will be pent-up demand and some drinkers will doubtless want to celebrate liberally -- but others may be nervous of crowds as the pandemic continues.

A rebellious mood is building. Venues in the city of Liege threatened to break lockdown early, and police with water cannons and horses had to break up a mass gathering in a Brussels park.

But bar managers like Sebastien Weverbergh, who runs an independent cafe adjoining the Silly brewery, argue that no-one is better placed than they are to manage a safe return to normal service.

The industry has experience of installing hygiene measures and dealing with exuberant customers, he said, and&nbsp;Belgium&nbsp;needs to&nbsp;get&nbsp;back to the pub.

"Not seeing our clients is a bit like being punished, as if we no longer had the right to see the people who in the end become our friends in this profession," he said.

"The other difficulty is obviously financial. The state has helped us, it has done what it could, but its means are sometimes a little derisory compared to the costs that a restaurant or a cafe generates."

Belgium&nbsp;has decided to slash value-added tax from 21 percent to six to support the&nbsp;reopening, setting aside 835 million euros ($1.0 billion) to put some fizz back into the sector.

But bar owners argue that European countries could do more and the industry is pushing the idea of bar reopenings as a motor for post-virus recovery.

"I think it is a symbol of the start of the recovery from Covid, for the whole of society," said Simon Spillane, director of communications for the association Brewers of Europe.

"And yes, we're hoping for a boom."

Before the crisis there were 11,000 breweries in Europe, and the number was surging by almost 1,000 per year as the fashion for small-scale specialists spread.

But the industry is at 50 percent capacity across the continent, sales in&nbsp;bars&nbsp;and restaurants dropped by 42 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, and increased shop sales did not fill the gap.

"When you're having a&nbsp;beer&nbsp;on a terrace&nbsp;with your friends, you're not just supporting the brewers," Spillane says. "You're supporting people's jobs and you're supporting the whole economy and the recovery of European society."&nbsp;

“I started crying,” said Carlos Brelles, who runs the Thalassa Diving School in Mar del Plata, a coastal city 5 miles from the sunken ship. “Three or four people without morals destroyed the work of so many people who put in so much effort.”

Brelles and the brewery owners said they have no clues that could shed light on the disappearance of the barrels, but they haven’t ruled out an act of sabotage. They asked prosecutors to open a criminal investigation.

It was a bitter end to an idea years in the making that was hatched over casual chats at the diving school.

Brelles, 52, having read news reports about beer that had been aged underwater in other countries, pitched the idea back in 2018 to a friend, Eduardo Ricardo, 40, one of the owners of Heller Brewery. And as the notion spread among beer enthusiasts in Mar del Plata, several took to the idea — but had a twist. Previous experiments had involved shallower depths, so they wanted to test beers made under greater pressure. They spent months securing permits to affix the barrels to the Kronomether, an abandoned Soviet-era ship 66 feet underwater that sank in 2014 and had become a favorite spot of recreational divers.

“No one had ever done this before,” said Juan Pablo Vincent, 43, master brewer at Baum brewery, who was involved in the effort.

The brewers settled on a dark, strong ale with an alcohol level of between 11% and 12%.

It took more than a year to obtain the necessary permits, and then coronavirus quarantine measures slowed down the endeavor, so the team was only able to lower the seven barrels of beer into the ocean Nov. 22.

The plan was to blend the content in the barrels with another beer. If all went according to plan, the brewers expected to be left with 1,000 liters, or 264 gallons, of a custom-made brew that would fill some 2,000 bottles and sell under the name Kronomether.

The breweries intended to donate the proceeds to a local natural science museum.

Brelles dove to check on the barrels Jan. 19, and everything looked fine. He returned this Tuesday, a day before the barrels were going to be brought back to land, and couldn’t believe his eyes: All the barrels were gone.

Vincent said the contents of the barrels would be useless in the hands of people who lack sophisticated beer-making skills, since the purpose of the brew was to mix it with another beer.

“If they stole it for their own consumption, they’re going to have to throw it away,” said Vincent. “It was a lukewarm, gasless liquor that would be very difficult to drink.”

Vincent said he suspects vandals broke the barrels loose.

“I think they broke everything so the barrels would drift away,” Brelles said. “It was malice for malice’s sake.”

Despite the disappointment, they are determined to try again.

Brelles agreed. “We can’t let them win,” he said. “We have to do it again.”

The brewery likely dates back to the era of King Narmer, it quoted the secretary-general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Waziry, as saying, adding it believed the find to "be the oldest high-production brewery in the world."

King Narmer ruled more than 5000 years ago and founded the First Dynasty and unified Upper and Lower Egypt. Existence of the brewery was known since the beginning of the 20-th century, but the exact location was never precisely determined.

The joint Egyptian-American team "was able to re-locate and uncover its contents", said the statement from the ministry.

According to Waziry, the brewery consisted of eight large areas which were used as "units for beer production".

Archaeologist Matthew Adams of New York University, who heads the joint mission with Deborah Vischak of Princeton University, said studies have shown that beer was produced at a large scale, with about 22,400 litres made at a time.

The brewery "may have been built in this place specifically to supply the royal rituals that were taking place inside the funeral facilities of the kings of Egypt", the statement quoted him as saying.

"Evidence for the use of beer in sacrificial rites was found during excavations in these facilities," the statement said.

Evidence of beer-making in ancient Egypt is not new, and past discoveries have shed light on such production.&nbsp;

Fragments of pottery used by Egyptians to make beer and dating back 5,000 years were discovered on a building site in Tel Aviv, the Israeli Antiquities Authority announced in 2015.

The Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC), an apex body of the alcoholic beverage industry, has urged Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to allow liquor trade in the state in a "controlled and responsible manner".

The Bihar government had on April 5, 2016, banned the manufacture, trade, storage, transportation, sale, consumption of liquor, including Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), and made it a punishable offence for those violating the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act 2016 which was amended in 2018.

The confederation- whose members include most major Indian companies which manufacture and market their product range in India and abroad- has written a letter to the CM urging him to permit liquor trade in the state.

The letter was written by Confederations Director-General Vinod Giri also urged the CM to allow the opening of liquor shops in urban areas (municipal bodies) besides permitting on-line sales/ home deliveries like many other states are doing.

It was also requested the state government to allow the sale of liquor products only above a price point to ensure only those who have means can buy it, Giri said while stating that the government should allow state-based alcohol producers to freely produce and export from the state.

"As a responsible Industry Association, we understand and concur with your objective of saving the poor from unwarranted social and economic effects of alcoholism.

"Taking note of Bihar governments stated goals of saving states poor from ill-effects of alcoholism, and at the same time getting necessary tax revenues so vitally needed to fight coronavirus spread," Giri said in a release on Tuesday.

He came out with a set of recommendations mentioned above for the state government that mainly incorporated the demand to open liquor trade "in a controlled and responsible manner".

Over the past couple of months, CIABC has led various discourses involving state governments facilitating measures needed in the light of pandemic such as on-line sales, home deliveries etc, the Director-General said.

"If given an opportunity, we would like to work with Bihar government also to work out a model that earns Bihar vital revenues, and at the same time help achieve the social goals that the state government had set for itself while implementing prohibition," he added.

As it stands now and is expected to remain in near future, GST collections are weak and the central government's ability to provide additional funds to states is much diminished due to its own requirements.

In that case taxes from alcohol will be one significant revenue in state governments control and something that state vitally needs to run itself and fight the pandemic, said Giri, who hails from Bihar.

Stating that excise revenues are vital part of governments own tax generation accounting for 10-30 per cent of revenues for most states, he said that I am pained to point out that Bihar is missing out on this easily accessible source of funds on account of prohibition".

GST devolutions are expected to be less and delayed.

Hence it makes sense for the government to take recourse to the tax revenues on alcohol by permitting liquor trade.

"We estimate taxes on alcohol in Bihar to be in the range of Rs 7000-8000 crores annually.

That could make all the difference in the fight against Corona, the Confederation's Director-General said.

It, however, noted that prohibition had resulted in creating awareness about abuse of alcohol, significantly reduced alcohol dependence amongst poor, and drastically brought down drunken behaviour in public places.

"CIABC would help the state earn vital revenue without compromising on the noble social goals you (state govt) had set out while implementing prohibition", Giri said.

The Bihar government had on April 5, 2016, banned the manufacture, trade, storage, transportation, sale, consumption of liquor, including Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), and made it a punishable offence for those violating the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act 2016 which was amended in 2018. The confederation- whose members include most major Indian companies which manufacture and market their product range in India and abroad- has written a letter to the CM urging him to permit liquor trade in the state. The letter was written by Confederations Director-General Vinod Giri also urged the CM to allow the opening of liquor shops in urban areas (municipal bodies) besides permitting on-line sales/ home deliveries like many other states are doing. It was also requested the state government to allow the sale of liquor products only above a price point to ensure only those who have means can buy it, Giri said while stating that the government should allow state-based alcohol producers to freely produce and export from the state. "As a responsible Industry Association, we understand and concur with your objective of saving the poor from unwarranted social and economic effects of alcoholism. "Taking note of Bihar governments stated goals of saving states poor from ill-effects of alcoholism, and at the same time getting necessary tax revenues so vitally needed to fight coronavirus spread," Giri said in a release on Tuesday. He came out with a set of recommendations mentioned above for the state government that mainly incorporated the demand to open liquor trade "in a controlled and responsible manner". Over the past couple of months, CIABC has led various discourses involving state governments facilitating measures needed in the light of pandemic such as on-line sales, home deliveries etc, the Director-General said. "If given an opportunity, we would like to work with Bihar government also to work out a model that earns Bihar vital revenues, and at the same time help achieve the social goals that the state government had set for itself while implementing prohibition," he added. As it stands now and is expected to remain in near future, GST collections are weak and the central government's ability to provide additional funds to states is much diminished due to its own requirements. In that case taxes from alcohol will be one significant revenue in state governments control and something that state vitally needs to run itself and fight the pandemic, said Giri, who hails from Bihar. Stating that excise revenues are vital part of governments own tax generation accounting for 10-30 per cent of revenues for most states, he said that I am pained to point out that Bihar is missing out on this easily accessible source of funds on account of prohibition". GST devolutions are expected to be less and delayed. Hence it makes sense for the government to take recourse to the tax revenues on alcohol by permitting liquor trade. "We estimate taxes on alcohol in Bihar to be in the range of Rs 7000-8000 crores annually. That could make all the difference in the fight against Corona, the Confederation's Director-General said. It, however, noted that prohibition had resulted in creating awareness about abuse of alcohol, significantly reduced alcohol dependence amongst poor, and drastically brought down drunken behaviour in public places. "CIABC would help the state earn vital revenue without compromising on the noble social goals you (state govt) had set out while implementing prohibition", Giri said.

On current trends, a crescendo of heatwaves and droughts will periodically cause sharp declines in barley yields, a crucial ingredient in most beer, according to a study published Monday.

"Decreases in the global supply of barley lead to proportionally larger decreases in barley used to make beer," said lead author Dabo Guan, a professor of climate change economics and the University of East Anglia in Britain.

Only the highest quality grain -- less than 20 percent -- is used to make beer, with most of the rest used as feedstock.

"High-quality barley is even more sensitive to extreme weather events linked to climate change," Guan told AFP.&nbsp;

During severe climate events, global beer consumption would decline by 16 percent, or nearly 30 billion litres -- equal to all the beer quaffed each year in the United States, Guan and an international team of researchers reported in the journal Nature Plants.

Beer prices in the wake of these disruptive weather events would, on average, double.

By volume, beer is by far the most popular alcoholic drink in the world, with nearly 200 billion litres produced in 2017.

Some countries will get hit harder by beer shortages and higher bar tabs than others, the study found.

In China -- whose 1.3 billion people collectively down more brew than any other nation -- consumption would fall by a staggering 4.3 billion litres in a bad year.

Britain would also get thirsty during a severe barley crunch, with consumption dropping by up to 1.3 billion litres, and the price of a pint doubling.

Per capita, most of the top-20 beer-drinking nations are in Europe, along with the United States, New Zealand and Australia.

Guan and colleagues calculated the impact of severe weather events under different future climate scenarios -- ranging from a sharp reduction in greenhouse gas emissions to our current "business as usual" trajectory -- on yields in the world's 34 most important barley-growing regions.

An extreme weather year was defined as one with both heatwaves and drought -- in a barley region during growing season -- more severe than once-a-century events before global warming began.

From 2010 to the end of the century, they found, there will be 17 such events if humanity manages to cap global warming under two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), and 139 if current rates of carbon pollution persist.

The next step was to estimate how these "barley supply shocks" would affect the production and price of beer in each region.

In a climate-addled world where staple crops such as wheat, corn, soybeans and rice are predicted to decline in yield and nutritional value, pressure will likely mount to use barley as a source of food rather than to make brew.

"Climate change may undermine the availability, stability and access to 'luxury' goods," said Guan.

At the same time, the "cross-cultural appreciation of beer" is deep and widespread, he noted.

"There is little doubt that for millions of people around the world, the climate impact on beer availability and price will add insult to injury," he said.

As the adage goes, "It's all fun and games until the beer runs out."

The top exporters of barley are Australia, France, Russia, Ukraine and Argentina, with many European countries filling out the top-20.

An effect of climate change: Less beer

Google's annual developer conference kicked off on Tuesday in California starting with CEO Sundar Pichai apologising for the flawed designs of the burger and beer emoji on Android.&nbsp;

Pichai said: "Towards the end of last year it came to my attention that we had a major bug in one of our core products. It turns out, we got the cheese wrong in our burger emoji."

There was a huge debate over the burger emoji on social media last year which started with author Thomas Baakdel stating the wrong placement of the cheese on the burger.&nbsp;
