Bangladesh won their first-ever game in a Twenty20 World Cup Super 12 Monday, with Taskin Ahmed taking 4-25 as the Netherlands imploded early and never recovered, losing by nine runs. The Dutch, who battled through the preliminary round to reach the Super 12, held the Asian nation to 144-8 with Paul van Meekeren becoming his country's joint all-time T20 wicket-taker along the way.

But they got off to a horror start in the run chase, losing two wickets in the opening two balls to Ahmed, then slumped to 15-4 in cold conditions at Hobart to put them on the back foot. Colin Ackermann&nbsp;with 62 off 48 balls played a lone hand, making his maiden T20 half-century as partners fell around him and the Netherlands were all out for 135 on the final ball.

Defeat was a heavy blow with two points desperately needed in a group that features heavyweight opponents India, Pakistan and South Africa. But it was a relief for Bangladesh, who qualified directly for the Super 12 but have suffered from poor form since the 2021 World Cup, playing 19 T20 internationals, losing 14, before meeting the Dutch.

After being sent into bat, Bangladesh plundered 12 off Fred Klaassen's opening over and kept the pressure on as the bowlers struggled to maintain their line. With temperatures hovering around 12 Celsius (54 Fahrenheit), the Dutch took time to warm up but when Van Meekeren switched ends he found extra pace and Soumya Sarkar (14) mistimed a pull shot to Bas De Leede.

Spinner Tim Pringle was brought on and ended fellow opener Najmul Shanto's innings on 25 in the next over as Bangladesh faltered.

The momentum swung towards the Dutch with danger man Litton Das out for nine, slapping a Van Beek ball to Tim Cooper at mid-off, before the experienced Shakib Al Hasan fell four balls later, caught in the deep off Shariz Ahmad to leave Bangladesh at 70-4 before a brief rain interruption.

They returned and van Meekeren struck again, bowling Yasir Ali with a yorker to draw level on 58 wickets with Pieter Seelaar as the Netherland's top T20 wicket-taker, needing 22 fewer games to get there. Afif Hossain (38) and Nurul Hasan (13) put on 44 before De Leede removed them both in the same over as their innings drew to a close.

The Netherlands had the worst possible start, with Ahmed bagging two wickets in his first two balls. Vikramjit Singh edged to Yasir Ali at slip then De Leede got a nick to wicketkeeper Hasan before Ackermann successfully fended off the hat-trick ball.

Two needless run outs within three balls followed with Max O'Dowd (8) and Tom Cooper (0) the men left stranded. They reached 59-4 before captain Shaun Edwards was undone by the spin of Al Hasan then Pringle (1) departed to Hasan Mahmud.

The covers came on as the rain returned, but it was again a brief delay with Ackermann resuming the chase before he was out going for a boundary to be the ninth wicket to fall.

Shakib Al Hasan to miss second Test against South Africa, confirms BCB chief selector

Bangladesh's top order fired on all cylinders as the tourists notched up a massive 314/7 and then dismissed South Africa for 276 to secure a historic away 38-run win in the first One-Day International at SuperSport Park and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

This was Bangladesh's first-ever win on South African soil. The Tamim Iqbal-led side had never won an ODI in South Africa in 19 previous attempts, but produced a fine display in the first match of the tour on Friday evening to break new ground in the 50-over format.

With the victory, Bangladesh further strengthened their place at the top of the ICC Men`s Cricket World Cup Super League standings, where they lead England and India in the top three.

Litton Das (50), Shakib Al Hasan (77) and Yasir Ali (50) laid the foundation for the massive total, while useful contributions from Tamim Iqbal (41) and Mahmudullah (25) guided them to 314 in 50 overs.

Early wickets then pegged South Africa's chase back, with Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed making early inroads. But fine half-centuries from Rassie van der Dussen (86) and David Miller (79) gave the hosts hope.

However, Mehidy Hasan Miraz rattled through the tail with a four-for, picking up the crucial wicket of Miller.

There were jubilant scenes on the pitch when Mahmudullah had Keshav Maharaj trapped in-front to seal a 38-run win.

After being put in to bat first, Bangladesh struggled initially. Openers Tamim Iqbal and Litton Das were cautious, scoring at a snail's pace, their half-century stand coming only in the 16th over.

While both batters hit an occasional boundary, they were kept quiet for most of the time by a disciplined South African attack.

The openers broke the shackles in the 19th over when Litton smashed Maharaj for a six and two fours and were well-placed to cross the 100-run mark when Andile Phehlukwayo trapped Tamim in front of off to break the 95-run opening stand.

Litton, who got to his 50 in the next over, was also undone soon after when Maharaj tricked him to shatter his stumps.

Mushfiqur Rahim could not last long either and departed for a 12-ball nine. At 124/3 in the 29th over, Bangladesh needed someone to stabilise their innings and Shakib Al Hasan and Yasir Ali did the rebuilding job.

After seeing off the initial overs, Shakib started accelerating. While Yasir held on at the other end, Shakib started playing his shots, bringing up his fifty with a six over long-off in the 38th over and continuing the assault.

The partnership of 115 was broken in the 42nd over with Lungi Ngidi getting Shakib LBW for 77 (64). In the next over Kagiso Rabada caught and bowled Yasir for 50 (44).

And with the platform set for a solid total, cameos from Mahmudullah (25), Afif Hossain (17), and Mehidy Hasan (19 not out) powered Bangladesh to 314/7.

Three wickets fell in the powerplay at the start of South Africa's reply, as Janneman Malan and Aiden Markram fell cheaply and Kyle Verreynne was dismissed for 21.

South Africa rebuilt through Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen, with the pair taking their side beyond three figures in an 85-run partnership that ended when the captain was caught behind off Shoriful.

Van der Dussen looked in the mood, moving beyond his half-century and looking on for a century before Yasir Ali produced a stunning catch on the rope to send him packing for 86.

The required rate was creeping up as Bangladesh's attack kept things tight.

But with David Miller still out in the middle and looking to be in explosive form South Africa still had a chance. But wickets were tumbling at the other end, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz removing Andile Phehlukwayo, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada in the space of two overs with his off-spin.

The 24-year-old got the scalp that Bangladesh really wanted to effectively seal the win, tossing one up to get the better of Miller, who was stumped for an excellent 57-ball 79.

There were only seven deliveries remaining and 38 runs still required when Keshav Maharaj became the last wicket to fall, wrapping up a famous and deserved win for Bangladesh.

The second ODI will be played in Johannesburg on Sunday, with the third and final ODI back at Centurion on March 23.

Brief scores: Bangladesh 314/7 in 50 overs (Tamim Iqbal 41, Litton Das 50, Shakib Al Hasan 77, Yasir Ali 50; Marco Jansen 2/57, Keshav Maharaj 2/56) beat South Africa 276 in 48.5 overs (Temba Bavuma 31, Rassie van der Dussen 86, David Miller 79; Shoriful Islam 2/47, Taskin Ahmed 3/36, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 4/61) by 38 runs.

Skipper Mahmudullah, who himself played a captain's knock was happy to see the intent of his players in the last two games which they won convincingly.

"I think it was much-needed. The way that we wanted to play, the intent was there from the batters. Having said that I think the wicket was better in comparison, so the batters did well to get 180," Mahmudullah said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Mahmudullah however feels that Powerplay batting is still a concern for Bangladesh.

"I think the two things we've been concerned about are the first six overs with bat and ball. If we get a good start, we can capitalise, so I think we need to improve on that.

T20 World Cup: Shakib Al Hasan shines as Bangladesh beat PNG to qualify for Super 12

The T20 World Cup 2021 has commenced in the UAE. While the main draw of the showpiece event will kickoff from October 23, there is already plenty happening as the qualifiers have already started where the lowly-ranked sides are giving their all to enter the Super 12.&nbsp;

In the second game of the big-ticket tournament, Bangladesh faced Scotland and were expected to emerge on top. Being the more experienced team, Mahmudullah-led Asian side lost the clash by 6 runs at the&nbsp;Al Amerat Cricket Ground (Ministry Turf 1), Al Amerat.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Bangladesh skipper Mahmudullah blamed the batting unit and opined,&nbsp;"I am very much frustrate Our batting is a concern. We have to bat better. We have to play aggressive cricket, regardless of the situation. We have a deep batting line-up, with Mohammad Saifuddin at No. 9. We may need to think over some changes tomorrow."

"We didn't deliberately bat slowly. We couldn't hit those boundaries. We have to bat better next time. A lot of things will come up since we lost the game. I think we didn't play well today, but we are a good T20 team. We have the capability. When we play our best cricket, we can win games," he added.

Bangladesh's forthcoming Test series in Sri Lanka was thrown into doubt Monday after its cricket chief rejected the coronavirus restrictions imposed by the hosts.

The three Tests in October-November were meant to mark the two nations' return to international cricket after a months-long lockdown halted professional sports worldwide.

But Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan said Sri Lanka's conditions, which include 14 days of isolation for players after arrival -- during which practising would be forbidden -- were unacceptable.

"The proposal we received is... not even close to what we agreed upon," Hassan told reporters in Dhaka.

"Under these conditions, it is not possible for us to play the Test championship... This is not even close to what is being followed in some other parts of the world where cricket is being played during this time."

Sri Lanka has a compulsory 14-day quarantine at a government-nominated facility, which includes some hotels, for everyone entering the country.

Hassan said players had been unable to train together&nbsp;after all sporting activities in Bangladesh were suspended in March to stem the spread of the virus.

Training resumed in July, but only one player and a trainer are allowed inside Dhaka's main stadium at a time as a precaution.

"Our players have not been in training for seven months. If we can't train... then it's not possible to play a Test," he added.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka's Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa told his country's cricket board to work with the health department to try and find a way around the strict quarantine procedures.

"Given the significance of #cricket in the region, I have asked @OfficialSLC to consult the covid task force and reconsider the @BCBtigers matter, Rajapaksa tweeted.

There was no immediate comment from the Sri Lankan board.

Hassan's comments came a week after opening batsman Saif Hasan tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of a planned training camp before their scheduled departure for Sri Lanka.

As concerns over pollution in the national capital continues to grow, Bangladesh`s players were seen training wearing marks at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday.

Bangladesh and India are all set to play the first T20I of the three-match series here in Delhi on Sunday, November 3.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/feeling-breathless-delhi-ncr-residents-complain-as-air-quality-turns-hazardous-259171">air quality in Delhi </a>continues to deteriorate and it has slipped into the `severe` category in several places across the city.

This has led many to urge the BCCI to shift the match from Delhi.

When ANI contacted the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), a source replied: "It is up to the players, if they want to use the mask they can, it is their choice".

On Thursday, Bangladesh's batsman Liton Das was seen training with a mask on, while others like Mushfiqur Rahim and Mustafizur Rahman were seen without masks.

But on Friday, the situation seems to have changed as many Bangladesh players opted to train with masks.

However, when Liton Das was asked why he chose to wear a mask during training, the batsman replied: "I had some personal problem that`s why I was wearing it. I was not feeling well".

India's stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma also downplayed pollution concerns in Delhi on Thursday.

"I have just landed and didn`t get the time to see/assess what it`s like in Delhi. The information I have is that the match is scheduled for November 3 and it will happen on the same day," he had said.

Earlier, the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/sourav-ganguly-takes-charge-as-president-of-board-for-control-of-cricket-in-india-257654"> BCCI President</a> Sourav Ganguly confirmed the match will go on as planned in the national capital.

"We have spoken to Delhi authorities in the last two days. They are expecting the match to go through but it was already scheduled so we could not cancel it at the last minute. We came in on October 28 and it was too late to do anything because a lot of preparations go in matches; tickets, crowd, and everything. So it is not possible to cancel things in the last minute," Ganguly had said.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was banned from all cricket for two years with one year of that suspended on Tuesday, after the all-rounder was found to have breached the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption code.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was banned from all cricket for two years with one year of that suspended on Tuesday, after the all-rounder was found to have breached the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption code. The ICC said Shakib, a prolific run-scorer and the top all-rounder in the ICC's one-day international rankings, had accepted three charges of failing to report "approaches he received to engage in corrupt conduct". If the 32-year-old observes the suspension, he will be able to play again from October 29, 2020, the ICC said. Shakib has played 56 tests, 206 ODIs and 76 T20s for Bangladesh. He has scored more than 11,000 runs and claimed over 500 wickets across three formats. At the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England, Shakib finished as the third-highest run-scorer with 606 in eight matches, including two hundreds and five fifties. The ICC said in its statement https://www.icc-cricket.com/media-releases/1473892 that the player did not report two approaches he received during a tri-series between Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in January 2018 and one more over a 2018 Indian Premier League match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab. "I am obviously extremely sad to have been banned from the game I love, but I completely accept my sanction for not reporting the approaches," Shakib said. "Like the majority of players and fans around the world, I want cricket to be a corruption free sport and I am looking forward to working with the ICC ACU (Anti-Corruption Unit) team to support their education programme and ensure young players don’t make the same mistake I did." Shakib recently led a strike by Bangladesh's cricketers, which they called off a week ago when the country's cricket board accepted most of their demands including pay rises and other benefits.

Bangladesh appointed South Africa Russell Domingo as their head coach on Saturday succeeding Steve Rhodes who exited after the team finished eighth in the World Cup last month.

Domingo, who coached South Africa to the semi-finals of the Twenty20 World Cup in 2014 and the 50-overs World Cup in 2015, has signed a two-year contract.

"He has a wealth of experience and we have been very impressed with his passion and coaching philosophy," Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan said in a statement announcing the appointment. "He has a clear idea of what is required to take the team forward."

Domingo said he was looking ahead to the new challenge.

"It is a massive honour...I have followed Bangladesh's progress with keen interest and I am extremely excited to assist the team in reaching the goals that they are capable of," he said.

The 44-year-old was picked ahead of former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson and former Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur, local media reported.

Hesson was also in the race for the India coach's job before Ravi Shastri was given another stint in that role.&nbsp;

Arthur applied for the Bangladesh role after Pakistan denied him an extension following the team's failure to reach the semi-final of the World Cup.

Domingo will travel to India in his current role as South Africa A coach and his first assignment with Bangladesh will be their one-off test against Afghanistan in Chittagong next month.

Bangladesh should adopt a rotation policy to prolong the careers of their top players and unearth new talents, premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has said.

The 32-year-old, undoubtedly the best cricketer Bangladesh has ever produced, was granted a break from the team's short tour of Sri Lanka for three one-day internationals after his heroics at the World Cup in England.

"A player can't play all the time, they need to take breaks," he told reporters in Dhaka.

"The responsibility falls on both sides. It is also the responsibility to understand (when) a player is saying that I need or a break, or the coaching staff is telling a player, you need a break. So both sides must understand."

The southpaw cited the example of India and said a rotation policy would boost bench strength for the South Asian country where cricket is the most popular sport.

"I will give you an example from India. Their players had the least injuries in their history last year. One of the main reason was their rotation policy. It helped them build many players who got exposure," Shakib said.

"At the same time, their players were fresh when they came to the side. Everyone, including Virat Kohli, got rested for one of the formats.

"When these breaks are in place, you can give more opportunity to players and you will have players in the pipeline as well. So we have to plan by looking at the bigger picture."

Bangladesh witnessed a spate of injuries to their players during the World Cup, where they finished eighth among 10 teams.

Shakib was the lone shining light for Bangladesh during the tournament, finishing third on the run-getters' list with 606 runs from eight innings while also picking up 11 wickets with his left-arm orthodox spin bowling.

He pleaded for all the stakeholders of the game to be on the same page to take cricket forward in Bangladesh.

"If we are to do this, we must have very good coordination between coaching staff, board and players," he said. "Otherwise there will be criticism if the right message is not sent.

"I am sure the BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) are planning for the next three or four years. We have already appointed two coaches, and once all of them get together, the BCB can put forth their strategy.

"If we can work together, I think our cricket can go forward like it did in the last four years."

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced on Saturday ex-New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori and former South African pacer Charl Langeveldt had been appointed bowling coaches.

Vettori, taking over from Sunli Joshi, will oversee the spinners on a short-term basis and Langeveldt replaces Courtney Walsh in charge of the fast bowlers, BCB president Nazulm Hassan Papon said.

"Though we've yet to sign any agreement with Vettori he has agreed to work with us. We also got the confirmation from Langeveldt," he said.

Vettori, the Black Caps' record wicket-taker, will work for 100 days leading up to next year's World Twenty20 in Australia starting with November's tour of India.

Vettori, who retired in 2015, also has experience of coaching at franchise level in the IPL with Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"Spin bowling has been a traditional strength for Bangladesh. I hope to share my knowledge as a player and coach of the demands of modern-day spin bowling in all versions of the game and help the bowlers make good intelligent decisions so that they can maximise their talents and skills," Vettori said in a BCB statement.

Langeveldt, who played six Tests and 72 one-day internationals for the Proteas, previously worked as the bowling coach for his home country from 2015 to 2017 and Afghanistan in 2018.

Nazmul added the BCB directors agreed to renew the contract of batting coach Neil McKenzie and decided to review the performance of fielding coach Ryan Cook after the end of the ongoing series in Sri Lanka.

There was no decision on the appointment of head coach, which remains vacant after Englishman Steve Rhodes was sacked in the wake of a lacklustre performance at the recent World Cup.

Bangladesh finished eighth after wins over fellow strugglers South Africa, West Indies and Afghanistan. &nbsp;

"We had talks with several candidates for the head coach, but no decision has been made," said Nazmul.

One of the candidates the BCB contacted is former Zimbabwean captain and England head coach Andy Flower, Nazmul confirmed, though he did not elaborate if there was any progress in the talks with him.

Bangladesh's outstanding run chase against West Indies has given them the confidence to beat any team in the World Cup, captain Mashrafe Mortaza said ahead of Thursday's clash with in-form Australian at Trent Bridge.

Bangladesh overhauled West Indies' total of 321 with 51 balls to spare on Monday. They also beat South Africa and lie fifth in the standings, well in contention for a semi-final spot with four matches to go.

"That was a must-win game for us to stay in the tournament. I know a few players in our dressing-room who believe we can beat anybody," Mashrafe told reporters on Wednesday.

"Again, Australia is very difficult (to beat) but it's not impossible. If you have a good start you never know, so let's see."

Bangladesh's one-day international record against Australia has been poor, however, with only one win in 21 games against the defending champions who have won four of their first five games.

Australia fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins have taken a combined 24 wickets in the World Cup and Mashrafe said Bangladesh will be wary of them.

"I think the Australian bowling attack has a lot of variation," Mashrafe said. "They have Pat Cummins, who can bowl with a change of pace. I think they have some good spinners. There's Nathan Lyon (and Adam) Zampa.

"So it won't be easy like the other matches but confidence is the main thing... If we took that confidence into the ground and deliver to our best, you never know."

Bangladesh will count on all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who is the tournament's leading scorer with 384 runs, and Mashrafe said the rest of the team must take a cue from his match-winning performances.

"Shakib is brilliant," Mashrafe added. "Hopefully, he'll keep going. The way he's playing, I think we need to support him well as a team.

"(The) bowlers have to step up a little bit with what Shakib is doing. It's going to be a good batting track. Our bowlers have to... bowl really well to restrict the Australians."

New Zealand Cricket have cancelled their under-19 team's scheduled tour of Bangladesh in the wake of last month's mass <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Christchurch+shooting">shooting at two mosques in Christchurch</a>.

The decision had been reached with an agreement of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, NZC Chairman Greg Barclay said in a statement on Monday.

Barclay added that both NZC and the BCB had agreed that proceeding with the April tour would be "insensitive and inappropriate" so soon after the shooting that left 50 people dead.

Several of the victims of the March 15 attack were originally from Bangladesh.

The south Asian nation's senior men's cricket team also narrowly avoided being caught up in the shooting as a number of their players headed to one of the mosques for Friday prayers before the third Test against New Zealand.

The third Test, which had been scheduled to start at nearby Hagley Oval the following day, was cancelled and the Bangladesh team left the country.

"We have conveyed our deep sense of regret over the circumstances leading to this mutual decision, and the BCB have been both understanding and generous in response," Barclay said.

"NZC have nothing but respect for the BCB and believe this development has only served to bring our countries closer together, and to strengthen our bond through cricket."

"NZC have nothing but respect for the BCB and believe this development has only served to bring our countries closer together, and to strengthen our bond through cricket."

New Zealand cancel under-19 tour of Bangladesh after Christchurch shooting

New Zealand have pledged a win-at-all-costs approach to the second Test against Bangladesh, starting in Wellington on Friday, as they look to wrap up the series with a game to spare.

The wicket is green and tailor-made for the early seamers, with New Zealand promising to continue with their short-ball tactic when it flattens out.

"We're looking to win the Test match in whatever way possible. Whatever gives us the best chance that is what we will do," New Zealand opener Tom Latham declared Thursday.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, faced further injury concerns to an already fragile batting line-up with Tamim Iqbal under a cloud and Mushfiqur Rahim unlikely to be fit.

Captain Mahmudullah described Tamim's issue as "a slight niggle" and accepted that "injury is part of the game".&nbsp;

Although neither side has named their match XV, Mahmudullah indicated Bangladesh would make changes given the colour of the wicket and how expensive spinner Mehidy Hasan proved in the first Test.&nbsp;

"We are yet to decide but we are thinking of picking four pace bowlers, given the conditions," he said.&nbsp;

"If you remember, the 2017 wicket was greenish early on too. Batsmen will find it difficult on the first day. There'll be seam movement and swing."

In the Wellington Test two years ago, Bangladesh surprised after being sent into bat with a first innings of 595 for eight declared, only to eventually lose by seven wickets.

Latham, a century-maker in that match, is enjoying another purple home patch with a Test average of more than 200 from three centuries, including an unbeaten 264 in the rain-affected Wellington Test against Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

Short-ball barrage

Rain is again expected Friday morning, but with fine weather forecast for the remainder of the Test.

Despite the Basin Reserve's bowl-first reputation, Latham had confidence even if New Zealand lose the toss and are put into bat.

"It does look a little bit greener and with a little bit more grass on it (than previously) so, regardless of what the surface plays like it's about us trying to adapt to that surface as quick as possible," Latham said.

"If we are asked to bat it will be a challenge. We haven't batted first a huge amount this summer so if we do I'm certainly looking forward to doing that and taking that challenge on."&nbsp;

Although New Zealand won the first Test comprehensively, they did struggle to take a wicket for a long period in the second innings as Soumya Sarkar and Mahmudullah delayed the end with a courageous 235-run stand for the fifth wicket.

New Zealand bowling spearhead Trent Boult, who took 10 for 80 against the West Indies in Wellington six years ago, was determined that should not happen again.

"We need to find a way to take wickets and we feel we have the ability in the group to do it," he said, adding the short-ball barrage remained an effective tactic when there was no swing.&nbsp;

"You're not left with many other options. We have Wags (Neil Wagner) who is an expert at being able to execute that plan. It's been pretty effective for us so expect it will be more of the same."

Ruthless New Zealand look to win second Test against Bangladesh in 'whatever way possible'

West Indies' run machine Chris Gayle is a big omission from the West Indies squad for T20I series against India. Meanwhile, Darren Bravo and all-rounder Kieron Pollard were welcomed to the limited-overs squad.

Cricket West Indies said that Chris Gayle has decided to skip their <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/pollard-and-darren-bravo-back-for-west-indies-gayle-unavailable-170183">series in India and Bangladesh</a>.

"We will be without our stalwart, Chris Gayle, for this Indian tour and the next tour against Bangladesh as he has declined selection at this time..." Courtney Browne, chairman of the selection panel, said in a statement late on Sunday.

The 39-year-old Gayle has declined the selection because currently he is busy with the Afghanistan Premier League and will subsequently feature in the T10 league, also in the United Arab Emirates.

"... however, he has made himself available for the selection for the visit of England to the Caribbean and the CWC (Cricket World Cup) in 2019," Browne added.

ODI squad: Jason Holder (captain), Fabian Allen, Sunil Ambris, Devendra Bishoo, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Ashley Nurse, Keemo Paul, Rovman Powell, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuels, Oshane Thomas

Here is why Chris Gayle declined selection for India series

Bangladeshi media on Saturday lauded the national cricket team's spirited showing in the Asia Cup final after they went down to favourites India in a last-ball thriller in Dubai.

Opener Liton Das slammed his maiden one-day international century in Bangladesh's modest 222 but it was the bowlers who made India sweat in their nervy chase of the 50-over contest.

A 45-run sixth wicket stand between Ravindra Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar Kumar and a gritty 23-run unbeaten knock by Kedar Jadhav, who was limping due a hamstring injury, finally gave India a three-wicket win.

India, led by Rohit Sharma, could not rest until a leg-bye off the final ball of the innings completed their chase for their seventh Asia Cup title.

A Daily Star headline read: "Tigers falling agonisingly short."

"Despite the batting implosion after their brightest start of the tournament, it was a bowling effort that Bangladesh can be proud of as they seemed out of the game on numerous occasions but clawed their way back each time," the country's biggest-selling English newspaper wrote.

Another English-language daily New Age headlined its report "Brave Bangladesh fall just short", with an accompanying picture of Mahmudullah lying on the pitch after he failed to accomplish a run out of Kumar.

The newspaper hailed Bangladesh's batting hero and man-of-the-match Das as "next big thing in Bangladesh" in a separate article, saying that with each stroke en route to his 121 off 117 balls, the 23-year-old batsman "showed his class".

Das set up the foundation for a competitive score but a mid-innings collapse saw Bangladesh slip from 120-0 to 151-5 before being dismissed in 48.3.

Meanwhile, India, who went into the tournament without regular skipper Virat Kohli, relished their title win that comes after a 1-4 Test loss in England.

Kohli and former Indian cricketers also praised Bangladesh for their fighting instincts that made the Asia Cup final an entertaining affair.

"Great job by the guys to win that tight game last night. @BCCI Seventh Asia Cup title for us Congrats to Bangladesh as well for giving a tough fight," Kohli wrote on Twitter.

Former Test batsman VVS Laxman also congratulated the Rohit Sharma-led team on his Twitter page.

"Congratulations India on becoming #AsiaCup Champions. Hats off to Bangladesh for their splendid fight and attitude, for not giving up and playing out of their skins... despite missing Shakib (Al Hasan) and Tamim (Iqbal). Special mention to Kedar Jadhav for his grit and commitment," Laxman wrote.

Bangladesh will face Zimbabwe for three one-day internationals and two Tests at home in October and November.

India host West Indies for three Twenty20 matches, five ODIs and two Tests starting October 4.

Bangladesh praised for fight in Asia Cup final

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza called on his players to&nbsp;ignore the absence of veteran stars Tamim Iqbal and Shakib al Hasan when they face defending champions India in Friday's&nbsp;Asia&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;final.

Bangladesh upset Pakistan by 37 runs in the last Super Four match in Abu Dhabi to book a place in the final for just the second time.

Without their established opener Tamim (fractured wrist) - injured after the first game - and world-class all-rounder Shakib (fractured finger), the Tigers will pin their hopes on younger players to shock the six-time champions.

"It will be tough without Tamim and Shakib," admitted Mortaza on Thursday.

"The good thing is that the boys have fought very hard so I hope they fight till the last ball and give us a win which will inspire the whole nation."

With their powerful batting line up, led by skipper Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, India start as favourites. They thrashed arch-rivals Pakistan in two matches to get closer to another title.

Sharma has notched a hundred and two half-centuries while Dhawan has two hundreds in the tournament, a factor Mashrafe feels makes them favourites.

"India are far better team (than us)," said Mashrafe. "They are coming here as the favourites so we have to be mentally strong and fight till the last ball."

Bangladesh have beaten India in only five of 34 one-day internationals but one of them came in the 2012&nbsp;Asia&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;on their way to the final when they lost to Pakistan by two runs.

India beat Bangladesh in the first Super Four game by seven wickets in Dubai in the current edition.&nbsp;

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja grabbed four wickets while pacemen Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshawar Kumar took three wickets apiece to bundle Bangladesh out for a paltry 173.

Sharma, with 83 not out, anchored India's easy win, but Mashrafe hoped Friday will see a different outcome.

"It's just a match, if you have a great day anything can happen. The boys are in good shape so it could be our day," said Mashrafe.

Bangladesh will look to their former captain Mushfiqur Rahim to lift their batting, like he did in the win against Sri Lanka with a battling 144 and against Pakistan when he hit 99.&nbsp;

Left-arm paceman Mustafizur Rahman is in good wicket-taking form, claiming 4-43 against Pakistan.

"We know they're a competitive side," said Dhawan of Bangladesh. "Hats off to them, the way they played and won against Pakistan. When you play all-round cricket, the results will follow."

Dhawan admitted, however, that many fans had been expecting an India-Pakistan final.

"Everyone thought it will be an India-Pakistan final, but Bangladesh won a great match, we can’t take them lightly just because Pakistan is a bigger team.&nbsp;

"Bangladesh are playing better cricket, there's a difference between team on paper and on the field, that's how I see it."

In the absence of Tamim and Shakib, Bangladesh look to shock India

Twitterati can't decide whether Bangladesh batsman Liton Das was 'out or not out' in the final of 2018 Asia Cup against India.

Liton, who scored 121 off 111, was stumped by MS Dhoni off Kuldeep Yadav after playing a magnificent knock which included 12 fours and two sixes.

It was his <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/asia-cup-bangladesh-opener-liton-das-slams-maiden-odi-hundred-168261">maiden century</a> and&nbsp;he looked fearless in front of India's top class pacers and spinners.

The 23-year-old slammed a quick half-century to give a good start to his team also he survived a scare when he was dropped on 52 by&nbsp;Yuzvendra Chahal off Ravindra Jadeja.

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/india-restrict-bangladesh-222-asia-cup-final-168284">Asia Cup final: India restrict Bangladesh to 222</a>

His dismissal was a close call as it was referred to the third umpire Rod Tucker and he reviewed it from the all the angles and signalled it out.

His dismissal&nbsp;started a debate on the social media forums whether Liton&nbsp;was out as per rule or not.

Here are some tweets that question the decision:

As per the rule run out is when the batsmen are going for a run or runs, but fall short of the batting crease when the stumps are broken by the fielding team. The batsman must have some part of his bat or body grounded beyond the crease - on the line would be out.

Under&nbsp;law 38. 2&nbsp;(a), "a batsman is not run out if he has been within his ground and has subsequently left it to avoid injury when the wicket is put down."

So that means a batsman cannot be run out when taking evasive action from a throw if he has not left his crease.
