Health officials in the New York area have said that three people have died after getting infected by a 'flesh-eating'&nbsp;bacteria. According to media reports, officials informed that the infection can be acquired by eating oysters or swimming in the ocean. One of the victims is from Suffolk County while the other two were from Connecticut. A fourth person was admitted to the hospital but was later sent home.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the Vibrio Vulnificus bacteria can cause deadly infection and one in five infected people dies.

“While rare, the vibrio bacteria has unfortunately made it to this region and can be extraordinarily dangerous,” Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement on Wednesday.

“As we investigate further, it is critical that all New Yorkers stay vigilant and take responsible precautions to keep themselves and their loved ones safe, including protecting open wounds from seawater and for those with compromised immune systems, avoiding raw or undercooked shellfish which may carry the bacteria.”

The New York State Department of Health has said that Vibrio Vulnificus occurs naturally in coastal, saltwater environments. The concentration of the bacteria can be higher from May to October when the weather is warmer.

“We are reminding providers to be on the lookout for cases of vibriosis, which is not often the first diagnosis that comes to mind,” Dr James McDonald, the New York state health commissioner said in the statement.

“We are also suggesting to New Yorkers that if you have wounds, you should avoid swimming in warm seawater. And, if you have a compromised immune system, you should also avoid handling or eating raw seafood that could also carry the bacteria.”

The officials have advised that anyone with an open wound or with a recent tattoo piercing should avoid warm seawater or at least cover the wound with&nbsp;a waterproof bandage.

Three people die in New York due to 'flesh-eating' bacteria

A flesh-eating bacteria has claimed the lives of three people here in the United States. Calling the bacteria extraordinarily dangerous New York released guidelines for residents. The Vibrio vulnificus bacteria caused a condition called The Roses. It is a rare but potentially fatal infection that can cause skin breaks, ulcers symptoms including diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting, fevers and chill exposure and can also result in an ear infection and cause sepsis or a life-threatening wound infection.

Cancer remains one of the most dreaded ailments anyone can suffer from. Often, those suffering from the disease don't even realise it till it's too late.

To change this narrative, researchers, as per a report in Science Alert, are working on harnessing the capabilities of engineered bacteria. These bacteria will help scientists and doctors detect early signs of colorectal cancer in the human body.&nbsp;

<h2>How does that work?</h2>

The approach involves using modified microbes as diagnostic tools. Taking advantage of the fact that our gastrointestinal tract is naturally inhabited by various bacteria, scientists have for years been trying to harness the natural abilities of some specific strains, and use them as probiotic sensors. Finally, they might've cracked the code.

Engineered bacteria offer new hope for early detection of cancer

Scientists discovered a naturally occurring strain of bacteria which will be able to stop the transmission of malaria from mosquitoes to humans. The bacteria was discovered by chance after a colony of mosquitoes failed to develop the malaria parasite in one experiment.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p>

The researchers said that the bacteria can act as a new tool for eradicating one of the oldest diseases in the world, which has been taking the lives of more than 600,000 people every year.<o:p></o:p>

The discovery was made by the scientists at a research facility in Spain, which is run by the GSK pharmaceutical company after they noticed that a colony of mosquitoes which were being used for drug development had stopped the transfer of malaria.

"The infection rate in the mosquitoes started dwindling and so by the end of the year the mosquitoes just would not be infected with the malaria parasite," said Dr Janneth Rodrigues, who headed the programme, while speaking to BBC.<o:p></o:p>

The samples were frozen by the team from their 2014 experiment and went back to them after two years, through which they made the new discovery. <o:p></o:p>

The studies further revealed that a specific strain of bacteria - TC1, which is present naturally in the environment had stopped the malaria parasites’ development in the gut of the mosquitoes.<o:p></o:p>

"Once it colonises the mosquito, it lasts for the entire lifespan," said Dr Rodrigues to BBC. "And we found out that, yes, it is the bacteria which was responsible for reducing transmission in those mosquitoes,” he added. <o:p></o:p>

According to the new data which was published in Science magazine, a mosquito's parasite load can be reduced by around 73 per cent by the bacteria. <o:p></o:p>

The bacteria function by secreting a small molecule, which is known as harmane, and inhibits the early stages of growth of the malaria parasite in the mosquito's gut.<o:p></o:p>

The GSK scientists, in conjunction with Johns Hopkins University, discovered that either harmane can be ingested orally by the mosquito, if it is mixed with sugar, or is absorbed through its cuticle on contact.

New York: US FDA recalls 1,400 pounds of cheese over listeria contamination fears

Artificial intelligence (AI) was utilised by researchers to find a novel antibiotic that can eradicate a dangerous species of superbug. Thousands of possible substances were reduced using artificial intelligence (AI) to a small number that could be evaluated in a lab. Abaucin, a strong experimental antibiotic that was the end result, needs to undergo more testing before it can be utilised.

New Superbug-killing antibiotic discovered

Scientists have cautioned that the widespread use of antibiotics in agriculture has resulted in the rise of bacteria that are more resistant to the human immune system.&nbsp;The study reveals that the antibacterial colistin, which was used for decades as a growth booster on pig and chicken farms in China, resulted in the creation of E coli strains that are more likely to bypass our immune system's first line of defence.

Although colistin has been banned as a livestock food additive in China and many other countries, the findings raise concerns about a new and serious threat posed by antibiotic misuse.

“This is potentially much more dangerous than resistance to antibiotics,” said Prof Craig MacLean, who led the research at the University of Oxford told The Guardian.&nbsp;

“It highlights the danger of indiscriminate use of antimicrobials in agriculture. We’ve accidentally ended up compromising our own immune system to get fatter chickens,” he added.&nbsp;

The findings may also have ramifications for the development of novel antibiotic drugs in the same class as colistin, known as antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), which the researchers believe may offer a special danger of limiting innate immunity.

Most organisms produce AMPs as part of their innate immune response, which is the first line of defence against infection. Colistin is based on a bacterial AMP, which bacteria utilise to protect themselves from competitors, but it is chemically similar to other AMPs produced by the human immune system.

In the study, E coli bearing the MCR-1 resistance gene were exposed to AMPs known to play essential roles in innate immunity in chickens, pigs, and humans. The bacteria were additionally tested for their susceptibility to human blood serum.

<h2>Effects on human immune system</h2>

The researchers discovered that E coli bearing the MCR-1 gene were at least twice as resistant to being wiped out by human serum. In comparison to bacteria that did not have the gene, the gene improved resistance to human and animal AMPs by 62 per cent&nbsp;on average. The study, which was published in the journal eLife, also found that the resistant E coli strain was twice as likely as the control E coli strain to kill moth larvae that were injected with the infection.

MacLean stated that it was impossible to predict how this would transfer into real-world consequences, such as the probability of E coli infection leading to sepsis and death.&nbsp;The predominance of these E coli strains has reduced dramatically since China restricted the use of colistin as a growth promoter, implying that these genes have extra "fitness disadvantages" for the pathogens. However, the data reveal a basic vulnerability that has not yet been thoroughly examined.

“The danger is that if bacteria evolve resistance to [AMP-based drugs], it could also make bacteria resistant to one of the pillars of our immune system,” MacLean told The Guardian.&nbsp;

In what may come as a huge breakthrough in sustainable energy development, a team of researchers at the Monash University in Melbourne have found a way to generate limitless electricity out of thin air. The scientists discovered a hydrogen-consuming enzyme from a common soil bacterium that uses the atmosphere as an energy source to generate electrical current. Led by Monash’s Dr Rhys Grinter, PhD student Ashleigh Kropp, and Professor Chris Greening, from the Biomedicine Discovery Institute, the research findings were published in the new edition of the journal Nature. Hydrogen gas scavenger The enzyme discovered is called Huc (pronounced “Huck”) and is made by Mycobacterium smegmatis bacteria, allowing it to survive in harsh conditions. “We’ve known for some time that bacteria can use the trace hydrogen in the air as a source of energy to help them grow and survive, including in Antarctic soils, volcanic craters, and deep in the ocean," said Professor Rhys Grinter. Huc acts as a hydrogen gas scavenger, devouring the gas below atmospheric levels to produce its magic. “Huc is extremely effective. Unlike all other known enzymes and chemical catalysts, it uses hydrogen at amounts below atmospheric levels – as little as 0.00005 per cent of the air we breathe," added Grinter. Notably, Mycobacterium smegmatis was discovered in 1985 by Sigmund Lustgarten, an Austrian doctor who was looking into skin diseases. The particular bacterium resides in the soil and is relatively unharmful - not causing any disease. It has been well-studied due to its use as a model for organism for tuberculosis. Grinter explained that to separate Huc from M. smegmatis, they had to develop a series of new methods, which included growing the bacteria from scratch and later breaking them open and using chemistry to isolate the single component. ALSO READ | South Korean scientists create an 'artificial sun' in pursuit of unlimited clean energy What next for Huc? The scientists added that Huc can be stored for long periods without losing its ability to generate electricity. During the experiments, it was flash-frozen in liquid N2 and stored at −80 degrees Celsius with purification yielding 10–20 micrograms of the Huc complex. Getting down to the brass tacks, the scientists said the early applications of Huc include powering small air-powered devices which could act as an alternative to solar-powered devices. The next step involved is to scale up the production so that Huc can be produced in sufficient quantities to be used at a meaningful scale. “Once we produce Huc in sufficient quantities, the sky is quite literally the limit for using it to produce clean energy," said Grinter. The drug regulator in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu has junked media reports which claimed&nbsp;that a Chennai-based pharmaceutical company's eyedrops caused eye infections and blindness in the US.&nbsp;

Speaking to Indian news outlet NDTV, the director of the Tamil Nadu Drugs Control, PV Vijayalakshmi, said that no contamination was found in samples from unopened eyedrops manufactured at the Chennai plant.

"Samples from several batches, including the one under question, were analysed. We found no contamination. The raw materials too were found as per standards," the drug regulator's director was quoted as saying.

The remarks came after the top US medical body, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), expressed alarm over the spread of a drug-resistant superbug linked to eyedrops and an eye ointment made by the Indian pharmaceutical company,&nbsp;Global Pharma Healthcare.

Experts have said that the strain, which was recently detected in the United States, cannot be treated with existing antibiotics, reported New York Times newspaper.

In recent months, eight cases of blindness and dozens of infections have been traced to EzriCare Artificial Tears, made by Chennai-based Global Pharma Healthcare, the NYT reported on Monday.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates over-the-counter medicines in the US, and the CDC have issued advisories against the use of EzriCare Artificial Tears, warning that they may be linked to an outbreak of ‘Pseudomonas aeruginosa.’

Pseudomonas bacteria causes infections in the blood, lungs or other parts of the body after surgery.

The FDA stopped imports of the product after the Indian pharma company in February recalled the potentially dangerous eyedrops from the US market.

According to medical experts, the bacteria linked to drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa is already a top concern for healthcare providers, as it affects those with compromised immune systems, nursing home residents and patients with invasive medical devices like catheters and breathing tubes.

A new research has shown that reusable water bottles carry 40,000 times more bacteria than an average toilet seat. Researchers at US-based waterfilterguru.com conducted the study by examining four popular types of water bottles: spout, screw-top, stray, and squeeze-top. The researchers swabbed different bottle parts and found how colony-forming units (CFUs) festered inside them. CFU is a unit used to determine the concentration of bacteria in any sample. They majorly found two types of bacteria named gram-negative rods and bacillus. Gram-negative bacteria such as E. Coli and Klebsiella can cause serious infections such as pneumonia. The infections caused by the bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics; meaning they are superbugs. Meanwhile, ingestion of bacillus can lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal issues. "Bacteria are known as biological drinking water contaminants. They’re just one of four types of pollutants that might be present in the water coming out of your taps and into your reusable bottles. Even though US tap water is considered some of the safest in the world, contamination can still occur," read the research. Read more: Superbugs could be as big a killer as cancer is today by 2050: UN report On average, the bottles harboured as much as 20.8 million CFUs of gram negative bacteria. The spout and screw-top lid bottle were the most infected with 30 million CFUs. For comparison, a toilet seat has 515 CFUs. Meaning the bottles carried bacteria four times that of a computer mouse, 14 times of a pet bowl, and yes, 40,000 times more than a toilet seat. "The human mouth is home to a large number and range of different bacteria. So it's not surprising that drinking vessels are covered in microbes," said one of the scientists. The scientists stated that to avoid drinking contaminated water, the bottles should be washed at least once a day with soapy water. Moreover, the bottles should be sanitised at least once a week. Climate Change is a word tossed around too lightly compared to magnitude of effect it is going to have on us. Climate Change doesn't just refer to few degrees of change in global temperature, or melting glaciers. The effects of climate change are manifold.

Researchers have now said that melting of ice in the northern hemisphere has a potential to release thousands of tonnes of unknown bacteria as glaciers and ice cover melt.

"We think of glaciers as a huge store of frozen water but the key lesson from this research is that they are also ecosystems in their own right," microbiologist and study author Arwyn Edwards of Aberystwyth University in the UK told the BBC.

As ice sheets melt with temperature increasing, the bacteria frozen in the ice can potentially reach warmer waters where they can possibly multiply. Many of these bacterias can be previously unknown and may&nbsp;severely impact us.&nbsp;

The study was led by glacial hydrologist Ian Stevens of Aarhus University in Denmark. The research team collected and studied surface meltwater from ten glaciers across the Northern Hemisphere. These glaciers were located in Canadian Arctic, European Alps, Greenland and Svalbard.

The researchers found an average of tens of thousands of microbes in each milliliter of water. The researchers claim that more than hundred thousand tonnes of bacteria could be released in next 80 years.

<h2>What is Klebsiella bacteria?&nbsp;</h2>

In the intestines, Klebsiella, a family of bacterial species live harmlessly. However, if they spread to other parts of the body, they can be quite harmful. This deadly drug-resistant Klebsiella superbug rivals MRSA, an another type of bacterial infection. The most well-known species in this family is Klebsiella pneumoniae. This particular bacteria has the potential to cause pneumonia, infections in the bloodstream, meningitis and urinary tract infections.&nbsp;

<h2>Klebsiella bacteria threat?&nbsp;</h2>

Led by Professor Ed Feil from the Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath, the researchers investigated the prevalence of this Klebsiella. This bacteria is highly antibiotic resistance. As per the University, some strains of this bacteria are even resistant to carbapenems, an antibiotic that is only used after all other antibiotic treatments fail. Increasingly, these Klebsiella bacteria is becoming a health issue in the United Kingdom. The WHO has identified this bacteria as a pathogen that poses a serious threat to patient safety.

<h2>What does the study say?&nbsp;</h2>

Up until now it was not clear whether the bacteria is able to pass through between clinical and non-clinical environments that is between hospitals and farms. In the study the researchers team collected 6,548 samples over a 15 month period from different locations in and around the Italian city of Pavia. Pavia is the place where this pathogen is a major issue in hospitals. The researchers analysed the samples using whole genome sequencing techniques. It was done to detect and identify any Klebsiella bacteria present in the samples.

For this, the team took swab samples of the patients in hospitals. They also took swab samples of healthy ‘carriers’ in the community and took samples from farms, puddles, domestic animals and even house flies and other insects to detect where the bacteria was present. They discovered 3,482 isolates, including 15 distinct Klebsiella species, with K. pneumoniae present in 50% of the positive samples.

<h2>What are the findings?&nbsp;</h2>

The researchers discovered that there was very little overlap between the bacteria found in hospitals and those found in the environment. Professor Ed Feil, who led the study, said Klebsiella infections are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, so whereas one used to be able to treat most urinary tract infections easily, now it is more common that patients are getting infections that keep coming back and causing problems.

“We found it was present everywhere, but were surprised that the strains found in hospital were different to those found in the environment, indicating there’s very little transfer between the two habitats: humans nearly always catch this from other humans," he said.&nbsp;

“This confirms the best way to control infection for these bacteria remains stringent hospital hygiene, and that there is less chance that outbreaks may be caused by contact with animals or the environment than previously feared, at least in a high-resource country like Italy.”

Dr Harry Thorpe, from the University of Oslo (Norway) and first author of the paper, said the fear was that farmers might get these bacteria from their livestock or soil and that we could get infected by contaminated salad or get sick if we swim in lakes that are infected.

However, he said the research "did not give any evidence of this, however, we did find resistant klebsiella in pets, such as cats and dogs. Vets and owners should be aware of this, as these animals could pose a risk for spreading the bacteria." &nbsp;

Hospitals are MORE RISKY than farms, Here's why

On Tuesday, a study published in the Lancet journal said that bacterial infections were the second leading cause of death worldwide and accounted for nearly one in eight of all deaths in 2019, a year before the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile in India, five common types of bacteria caused nearly 6.8 lakh (0.68 million) deaths in the same year.&nbsp;

At least 7.7 million people, 13 per cent of the global total, died due to common bacterial pathogens three years ago making it the second-leading cause of death after ischaemic heart disease (caused by narrowed coronary arteries reducing the supply of blood to the heart).&nbsp;The research looked at deaths caused by 33 common bacterial pathogens and 11 types of infection across nearly 204 countries and territories.

It was conducted under the Global Burden of Disease 2019 and Global Research on Antimicrobial Resistance (GRAM) studies framework and data by thousands of researchers worldwide and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.&nbsp;Notably, five of the 33 bacteria which were responsible for at least half of the deaths are S. aureus, E. coli, S. pneumoniae, K. pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The study shows the “full extent” of challenges posed by bacterial infections in global public health, said the study’s co-author and director of the US-based Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, Christopher Murray. He also highlighted the importance of incorporating the data from this research in global health initiatives “so that a deeper dive into these deadly pathogens can be conducted, and proper investments are made to slash the number of deaths and infections.”&nbsp;

In Sub-Saharan Africa at least 230 per 100,000 population were from bacterial infections. At the same time, 52 per 100,000 deaths were noted from what the study called a “high-income super-region” which included countries from North America, Australasia and Western Europe. This comparative analysis was used to highlight the stark difference between low-income and high-income countries.&nbsp;

In the Indian context, A. baumannii (which can cause infections in the blood, urinary tract, and lungs) replaced Pseudomonas aeruginosa as one of the top five types that claimed 0.68 million lives across the country in 2019 alone, in the addition to the ones previously mentioned.&nbsp;

Furthermore, E.Coli (commonly causes food poisoning) was deemed the deadliest among the pathogens which claimed over one million lives in the same year, in India. While globally, S. aureus (responsible for a range of illnesses) and E. coli were responsible for 864,000 deaths more than HIV/AIDS-related deaths on record three years ago.&nbsp;

Therefore, researchers have called for an increase in funding for building stronger health systems with greater diagnostic capabilities as well as implementing control measures and the use of vaccines to lessen the number of deaths. Bacterial infections killed nearly eight million people, second-leading cause of death in 2019: Study

According to recent research, ancient microbes may be dozing beneath the surface of Mars, protected from the harsh radiation of space for millions of years.&nbsp;

Although there hasn't been any proof of life on Mars, scientists recreated its environment in a lab to explore if bacteria and fungi could survive. The researchers were shocked to learn that bacteria could probably live for 280 million years if they were buried and shielded from the solar radiation and ionising radiation that constantly pummelled the Martian surface.&nbsp;

The results suggested that if life had existed on Mars, the remnants of past life may still be present in the planet's subsurface, where future expeditions may drill into the Martian soil.

Mars was probably more habitable for life billions of years ago when it had an atmosphere and water on its surface, but now it resembles a frozen desert. Average temperatures in the planet's arid midlatitudes are minus 80 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 62 degrees Celsius). And because Mars' atmosphere is so thin, radiation is another persistent danger.&nbsp;

The limits of microbial life's ability to survive when subjected to the kind of ionising radiation that it would encounter on Mars have been established by researchers. The team then exposed six different kinds of Earth-based bacteria and fungi to a model Martian surface environment while bombarding them with protons or gamma rays to replicate space radiation.

Deinococcus radiodurans emerged as the winner without a doubt. The hardy bacteria, known as "Conan the Bacterium" because of this, appeared to be ideal for life on Mars.&nbsp;

The bacteria is polyextremophile, which means it can withstand extreme temperatures, acidity, and dehydration. One of the most radiation-resistant species known to science is the hardy bacterium.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that an E. coli outbreak in four states from an unidentified food source is being investigated. Many of the sick people are alleged to have eaten sandwiches at Wendy's Co.&nbsp;

In the week prior to becoming unwell, 22 of the 37 sick were reported to have eaten Wendy's sandwiches with romaine lettuce in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania, the FDA reported on Friday.&nbsp;

However, the nature of the problem and whether the vegetable used in Wendy's sandwiches was sold or served at other establishments have not yet been determined by the investigators.

The burger giant announced that it is removing sandwich lettuce from all of its locations in the area as a safety measure. The four states are home to about 1,100 of the 5,940 Wendy's outlets in the United States.&nbsp;

Ten people have been hospitalised as a result of the sickness, which began between July 26 and August 8, and three of those in Michigan have experienced a form of kidney failure.

Normally, healthy humans and animals' intestines contain E. coli bacteria. Many strains are safe, but some can give you violent stomach cramps, bloody diarrhoea, and vomiting.&nbsp;

According to the CDC, there may be additional afflicted individuals and the outbreak may not be confined to the four states.

Israeli researchers are aiming to create a "precision weapon" made of bacteria-fighting viruses to combat intestinal ailments. Phase 1 clinical studies of two separate virus "cocktails" have been conducted; preliminary findings suggest that they are safe, and substantial in vitro and animal testing suggests that they are antibacterial.

According to peer-reviewed research that was published in the journal Cell, the virus significantly decreased the amount of Klebsiella pneumoniae, a bacterium that is prevalent in the stomachs of those who have Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Phage therapy also referred to as bacteriophage therapy, is not a recent concept and was the subject of extensive research in the early 20th century. Antibiotics were developed, and efforts to employ viruses in clinical settings were mostly abandoned before any notable achievements, but researchers kept using phages in experimental settings.

Due to worries about germs that are resistant to antibiotics, interest in potential phage therapeutics has recently increased. Although none of the phage therapies is in common usage, some researchers have speculated that they might offer a solution to the issue. Researchers looked into the microbiomes of people with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis to determine which bacteria would be beneficial to fight as part of the Weizmann study.

The phages will now go through more clinical testing to determine whether they can fight bacteria and improve health in a practical environment. Researchers at the Physical Intelligence Department of Max Planck Institute in Germany have made a breakthrough that can help fight cancer. Reportedly, the scientists at the institute, combining elements of robotics and biology have developed magnetically-controlled microscopic robots that can reach tumour cells and battle cancer.&nbsp;

The scientists used E.coli bacteria, often dubbed 'superhero of the microbial world' for the process. The E.coli bacteria can easily traverse through material ranging from liquids to highly viscous tissues, making it the ideal choice for the experiment.&nbsp;

The scientists attached magnetic nanoparticles to this bacterium and when exposed to a magnetic field, managed to enhance its speed, allowing it to reach the desired spot quicker. Meanwhile, spherical-shaped carriers called liposomes that contain the medication were also attached. After reaching the tumour spot, the microrobots grow there and start their 'miracle' work.&nbsp;
<img alt=" Bacterial biohybrids" data-caption="&amp;nbsp;Bacterial biohybrids" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="48dfba2f-ea93-452f-b3a5-4cb70f052c67" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/content_Schematics_1.jpg" />
Birgül Akolpoglu, a PhD student and the first author of the research decoded the process by stating that these biohybrid microrobots can be used to awaken the immune system of the patients, which will help fight the tumour cells and simultaneously increase the effect of cancer drugs.&nbsp;

“Imagine we would inject such bacteria-based microrobots into a cancer patient’s body. With a magnet, we could precisely steer the particles towards the tumour. Once enough microrobots surround the tumour, we point a laser at the tissue and by that trigger the drug release. Now, not only is the immune system triggered to wake up, but the additional drugs also help destroy the tumour,” Akolpoglu was quoted as saying by the official Max Planck Institute website.&nbsp;

It is pertinent to note that bacteria are drawn to areas of low oxygen levels and high acidity in the body; both of which are prevalent near a tumour. Thus, scientists have managed to use both, the natural and programmed qualities of modified E.Coli bacteria to tackle the cancer tumour.&nbsp;

“Bacteria-based biohybrid microrobots with medical functionalities could one-day battle cancer more effectively. It is a new therapeutic approach not too far away from how we treat cancer today,” added co-author Dr Metin Sitti.

A research team at Binghamton University has found a way to power biobatteries for weeks using bacteria. Researchers said they are doing it using three different types of bacteria.

Researchers use bacteria to generate power: How does it work?

Scientists have unearthed the world's largest bacterium in a Caribbean mangrove.

The bacteria is big enough to be viewed by the naked eye. The research which appeared in Science journal said Thiomargarita magnifica "although thin and tubular stretched more than a centimetre in length".&nbsp;It can reportedly grow up to 2 centimetres.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/bacteria-with-antibiotic-resistant-genes-discovered-in-antarctica-482322">Also Read:&nbsp;&nbsp;Bacteria with antibiotic resistant genes discovered in Antarctica</a>

The bacterium has an average cell length greater than 9000 micrometres, researchers found.

The study informed that cells of most bacterial species are around 2 micrometres in length with some of the largest specimens reaching 750 micrometres.

Scientists are still unclear how the bacterium ended up being so large although researchers believe it adapted to avoid being eaten by smaller organisms.

The Thiomargarita magnifica was first discovered on mangrove leaves in Guadeloupe.&nbsp;

Jean-Marie Volland, a scientist with joint appointments at the US&nbsp;Department of Energy (DOE) said: "It’s 5,000 times bigger than most bacteria. To put it into context, it would be like a human encountering another human as tall as Mount Everest.”

Scientists have unearthed the world's largest bacterium in a Caribbean mangrove. The bacteria is big enough to be viewed by the naked eye. The research which appeared in Science journal said Thiomargarita magnifica "although thin and tubular stretched more than a centimetre in length". It can reportedly grow up to 2 centimetres. The Thiomargarita magnifica was first discovered on mangrove leaves in Guadeloupe. Jean-Marie Volland, a scientist with joint appointments at the US Department of Energy (DOE) said: "It’s 5,000 times bigger than most bacteria. To put it into context, it would be like a human encountering another human as tall as Mount Everest.” On its rather exotic name, Silvina Gonzalez-Rizzo, an associate professor of molecular biology, said: “Magnifica because magnus in Latin means big and I think it’s gorgeous like the French word magnifique.” (With inputs from Agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Scientists discover world's largest bacterium in Caribbean swamp

Bacteria in Antarctica have been discovered with genes that give them natural antibiotic and antimicrobial resistance and have the potential to spread out of the polar regions, according to scientists in Chile.

Andres Marcoleta, a researcher from the University of Chile who headed the study published in the Science of the Total Environment journal in March, said that these "superpowers" which evolved to resist extreme conditions are contained in mobile DNA fragments that can easily be transferred to other bacteria.

Researchers found that the Pseudomonas bacteria, one of the predominant bacteria groups in the Antarctic Peninsula, are not pathogenic but can be a source of 'resistance genes', which are not stopped by common disinfectants such as copper, chlorine, or quaternary ammonium.

However, the other kind of bacteria they researched, Polaromonas bacteria, does have the potential to inactivate beta-lactam type antibiotics, which are essential for the treatment of different infections, according to Marcoleta.

"(We found) antibiotic resistance and other types of resistance, such as metals or disinfectants such as quaternary ammonium or chlorine. We found that all the genetic information present in these bacteria that confer these hyper-resistance properties could be a potential source of resistance mechanisms that can be transferred to disease-causing bacteria," Marcoleta said.

Scientists from the University of Chile collected several samples from the Antarctic Peninsula from 2017 to 2019.

Bacteria with antibiotic resistant genes discovered in Antarctica

The food poisoning event in Kerala that claimed the life of a 16-year-old girl who ate chicken shawarma at a restaurant was caused by Shigella germs.

Shigellosis is the infection it causes.

Infection with Shigella causes diarrhoea (occasionally bloody), fever, and stomach cramps in the majority of patients. Antibiotics should be provided to people who are sick or have underlying problems.

The restaurant's owner and other personnel have been arrested.

The Kerala High Court has taken notice of the incident and has requested a response from the state administration.

What exactly is Shigella?

Shigella is a bacterial infection produced by the enterobacter family of bacteria and is one of the most common causes of diarrhoea worldwide.&nbsp;

Not all bacteria in the enterobacter family, however, cause disease in humans.

Shigella is a bacteria that attacks the intestine, causing diarrhoea, stomach pain, and fever.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it just takes "a minimal number of bacteria to make someone sick" (CDC).

The disease is easily transmitted through direct or indirect contact with the patient's waste. If you swim or bathe in contaminated water, you can contract the virus.

Is death from shigellosis common?

Unless the patient has a weakened immune system, the infection does not usually result in death. If the bacteria is resistant to the medications, it might be lethal.

What are the safeguards?

The same precautions should be taken as with any food or water-borne sickness. Handwashing before and after meals, as well as ensuring that the drinking water is clean and the fruits and vegetables are fresh.

Products with a higher risk of spoilage, such as milk, chicken, and fish, must be stored at the right temperature and cooked thoroughly.

Shigella: Bacteria that killed an Indian girl after she ate shawarma in Kerala

Methane-consuming bacteria can generate power. Generating power while purifying the environment of greenhouse gases?. It should be possible using bacteria, says a study. Candidatus Methanoperedens use methane to grow. They naturally occur in freshwater.

Modern problems require modern solution is a catchphrase used in many memes but ingenuity of scientists and artists sometimes makes us believe the urban adage.

When one says the word 'bacteria' it generally elicits a negative sentiment. Armies of bacteria are ever ready to make us sick. But not all bacteria are bad. We are not talking about good bacteria that reside in our gut helping us digest food and all that but some other bacteria.

A truly bright idea allowed scientists to successfully restore a medieval masterpiece in Florence, Italy. The artist is none other than Michelangelo, the master of renaissance years.

The master created a chapel for the powerful Medici family in medieval Italy. The year was 1520. Passage of time meant that the chapel and the tomb of members of Medici family accumulated dirt and grime that was hard to clean.

Scientists thought of a novel approach to tackle this problem. They tested 11 strains (types) of bacteria for their effect on marble and selected a few from among them.

The strains that were selected were Serratia ficaria SH7, Pseudomonas stutzeri CONC11 and Rhodococcus sp. ZONT

Selecting the bacteria was an important task as it was absolutely necessary to ensure that the bacteria only cleaned the dirt and didn't cause any harm/ degrade the marble of which the invaluable artwork was made.

Bit it was observed that the carefully selected bacteria did the job they were expected to do.

Funnily enough, bacteria names Serratia ficaria causes urinary tract infection. But it was observed that it cleaned the marble within two days. The strains of bacteria were applied to the artwork in the form of a gel.

The chapel was presented to the public on 545th birth anniversary of Michelangelo.

Researchers in Australia discovered evidence that bacteria in the nose can enter the brain via nasal cavity nerves, triggering a chain of events that could lead to Alzheimer's disease.

The study adds to the growing body of research that suggests Alzheimer's disease is caused by viral or bacterial infections.&nbsp;

Chlamydia pneumoniae is a widespread bacteria that causes pneumonia and a variety of other respiratory illnesses, as its name suggests.

However, it has been found in the brain on rare occasions, implying that it could produce more insidious problems.&nbsp;

Researchers from Griffith University and Queensland University of Technology set out to find out how C. pneumoniae got into the brain and if it might cause damage once there for the new study.

The scientists had a hunch about how this nose-dwelling bug might make the journey.&nbsp;

The researchers discovered that C. pneumoniae may infect the olfactory and trigeminal nerves, then the olfactory bulb — the small neuronal structure in the forebrain that mediates the sensation of smell – within 72 hours of being introduced to the nose in mice.

It's only a short trip to the rest of the brain from there.

Most intriguingly, the researchers discovered that after the bacteria entered the central nervous system, it caused a number of alterations that are linked to Alzheimer's disease.&nbsp;
