Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed to a ceasefire starting from 12:00 on October 10, they will now exchange prisoners and bodies of those killed in the conflict.

News Alert: Armenia, Azerbaijan agree ceasefire to exchange bodies and prisoners

Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed on October 10 to a ceasefire and to begin "substantive talks" over the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh after nearly two weeks of fierce clashes.

Armenia-Azerbaijan to start substantive talks: Move to de-escalate tensions in Karabakh

A shaky ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Nagorno-Karabakh region entered into force on Saturday after a deal was struck in Moscow between Baku and Armenia to allow prisoners and the bodies of the dead to be exchanged.

In a statement in the early hours of Saturday after 10 hours of talks, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who helped mediate between the two sides, said the ceasefire had been agreed on humanitarian grounds.

It was not immediately clear how long the ceasefire, due to enter into force at midday local time, would last, and there were reports from both sides on Saturday morning of continued fighting.

The Moscow ceasefire talks was the first diplomatic contact between the two sides since fighting over the mountainous enclave, which is internationally-recognised as part of Azerbaijan but is populated and governed by ethnic Armenians, erupted on September 27, killing hundreds of people.

"A ceasefire is announced from 12 hours 00 minutes on October 10 on humanitarian grounds," Lavrov said, reading out from a statement.

Lavrov also said Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to start talks on the settlement of the conflict.

Russia's top diplomat added that International Red Cross Committee would act as an intermediary in the humanitarian operation.

"Azerbaijan and Armenia begin substantive negotiations with the purpose of achieving a peaceful settlement as soon as possible," Lavrov told reporters, adding that such talks will be mediated by the Minsk Group of international negotiators.

The mountain enclave belongs to Azerbaijan under international law but broke away in a war as the Soviet Union collapsed and is populated and governed by ethnic Armenians.

The renewed fighting in the decades-old conflict has raised fears of a wider war drawing in Turkey, a close ally of Azerbaijan, and Russia, which has a defence pact with Armenia.

The clashes have also increased concern about the security of pipelines that carry Azeri oil and gas to Europe.

The fighting is the worst since a 1991-94 war that killed about 30,000 people and ended with a ceasefire that has been violated repeatedly.

Azerbaijan said on Friday that 31 Azeri civilians had been killed and 168 wounded since Sept. 27. It has not disclosed information about military casualties.

Nagorno-Karabakh said 376 of its military personnel and 22 civilians had been killed since the beginning of the conflict.

Ceasefire enters into force in Nagorno-Karabakh region after Moscow deal

Russia said Friday that Armenia and Azerbaijan had agreed to meet in Moscow for negotiations on ending the fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh, after President Vladimir Putin called for talks.

"Baku and Yerevan have confirmed their participation in the consultations in Moscow," Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told AFP.

"Active preparations are underway," she said, with the talks expected to take place later on Friday and involve the two countries' foreign ministers.

The foreign ministers had been invited early Friday morning to take part in talks in Moscow. “The foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia are being invited to Moscow on October 9,” Russia President Vladimir Putin said in a statement released by the Kremlin.

Putin’s invitation came as there appeared to be no end in sight for nearly two weeks of fighting between Azerbaijan and ethic Armenian separatists that has claimed hundreds of lives.

"Following a series of telephone discussions between the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, the President of Russia calls for a halt to military actions in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," the statement added.

“The President of Russia is issuing a call to halt the fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh on humanitarian grounds in order to exchange dead bodies and prisoners,” the Kremlin added.

Yerevan had ruled out any talks between the two countries’ top diplomats as long as clashes are ongoing until this morning.

Armenia on Thursday accused Azerbaijan of shelling a historic cathedral in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Armenia said several journalists were injured in strikes on the cathedral after an initial bombardment left rubble strewn across the floor, pews knocked over and a layer of dust coating the interior from parts of the building’s limestone walls that had been hit.

Azerbaijan and Armenia are locked in bitter fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh, an Azerbaijani region controlled by Armenians who declared an unrecognised breakaway statelet after the fall of the USSR and emerged victorious from the war that followed.

Hundreds including civilians have been killed in the current fighting, the worst since a 1994 ceasefire, with both sides doubling down on entrenched positions over who should control the region.

Defence officials in Azerbaijan and Armenia said fighting continued into Thursday, with both sides claiming to have inflicted heavy losses and accusing the other of shelling civilian areas.

International leaders have repeatedly called for an immediate halt to the fighting but there are no signs yet of the conflict abating.

Turkey’s strong backing for Azerbaijan has sown fears in the West that the conflict could spiral into a full-blown war embroiling Ankara with Moscow, which has a military treaty with Armenia.

Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron are among the world leaders to denounce the reported deployment of pro-Turkish fighters from Syria and Libya to Karabakh. Iran on Wednesday warned of “terrorists” who had joined the conflict from abroad.

Azerbaijan announced Thursday that it was recalling its ambassador to Athens following reports that Greek citizens were joining Armenian forces in Karabakh.

Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict: International mediators head to Geneva

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's military aggression has put Turkey at odds with NATO. The latest conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan has triggered a fresh fight. WION's Palki Sharma tells you why Turkey has become the biggest liability for NATO.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday said that the ongoing conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh could escalate into a full blown regional war if left unchecked.

The ongoing fighting between Azeri and ethnic Armenian forces has led to the fiercest battle in the region in over 25 years. During a cabinet meeting, Rouhani added that the conflict was “totally unacceptable”.

He said the same while especially alluding to Iran’s role in the conflict. Iranian media had earlier reported how stray shelling had impacted villages near Iran’s northwestern border. Such mortar bombs and missiles wounded a child and damaged multiple structures.

In response to this collateral damage, Iran lodged a formal complaint against Armenia and Azerbaijan on Wednesday, saying one must not violate Iran’s “territorial integrity”. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Khatibzadeh said this in a statement, as reported by local media outlets.

"We must be attentive that the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan does not become a regional war. Peace is the basis of our work and we hope to restore stability to the region in a peaceful way," Rouhani said.

"Our priority is the security of our cities and villages,” he added.

Additionally, Rouhani claimed that he would not allow Armenia and Azerbaijan, both of which border Iran, to send terrorists to Iran “under various pretexts”.

Fighting began in the region on September 27, and has since then escalated into a major conflict. Under international law, the region belongs to Azerbaijan, but is mostly governed by Armenians.

France, Russia and the United States had earlier called for an immediate halt to the conflict however the fighting continues.

Amid the raging conflict, Azerbaijan defence ministry said Armenian forces had shelled several towns, including Ganja, Terter, Beylagan and Barda with artillery fire being used in the escalating conflict.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan President Aliyev said that Armenian forces must leave our territories, not in words but in deeds and provide a timetable for a full withdrawal, apologise to the Azerbaijani people and recognise the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan escalating tension in the region.

"Nagorno-Karabakh is our land. We have to go back there and we are doing it now," Aliyev said, adding, "This is the end. We showed them who we are. We are chasing them like dogs."

Armenia had earlier accused Turkey of sending mercenaries from Syria and Libya to join the fighting.

Armenia calls for truce with Azerbaijan: Nearly 200 people dead in clashes

The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has launched an investigation to find the truth behind the allegation of the use of Canadian military technologies in the ongoing Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict.

It was recently alleged the Canadian imaging and targeting systems were being used on unnamed drones.

"In regards to the Canadian military equipment that may have been used in this situation, the minister of foreign affairs (Francois-Philippe Champagne) has launched an investigation into what exactly happened," Trudeau told a news conference.

Trudeau said his government is "extremely concerned about the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh," calling for a "de-escalation of hostilities."

"There is no question, there is not a military solution to this conflict," he said. "It can only be resolved through proper dialogue and engagement."

Canada to investigate use of its tech in Armenia-Azerbaijan clash

Armenia: Ready to work with mediators for ceasefire

Armenia has expressed readiness to work with international mediators to establish a ceasefire with Azerbaijan over the breakaway Nagorny-Karabakh region.

Armenia: Ready for peace talks

Armenia and Azerbaijan are on the brink of war. This threatens to disrupt oil and gas supply to Europe. Armenia and Azerbaijan were both part of Soviet Russia and now they are neighbours. They've been fighting over a region called Nagorno-Karabakh.

Azerbaijan is a country with Muslim majority while Armenia has Christians. The disputed region has ethnic Armenians but it's seen as part of Azerbaijan. Hostilities escalated almost a week ago.

Azerbaijan's army is firing artillery shells at Armenia. Missiles are taking down drones. The pictures ane footages obtained from Agdam area inside the conflict zone give us an idea of how serious the situation is. There is a risk of a major conflict at the crossroads of Asia and Europe.

On Friday, Armenian President Dr Armen Sarkissian told WION that Turkey was the creator of this conflict.

What is Armenia-Azerbaijan clash all about?

Nagorno-Karabakh is a region four times the size of Delhi. It falls in Azerbaijan but Armenia stakes claim on it. Nagorno-Karabach has been part of Azerbaijan's territory since the Soviet era and that's how the world recognises it today.

This region has been under de-facto Armenian control since the early 1990s. The territory itself declared independence from Azerbaijan in 1991. Armenia supported the region politically and militarily. But it hasn't recognised Nagorno-Karabakh as an independent. Both countries have fought over this region for nearly a century now. 30 thousand people died between 1991 and 1994.

In 1994, Russia brokered a ceasefire. It was violated In the years that followed. There was a sporadic exchange of fire.

But the current flare-up is more serious. It began on September 27. Both countries have proclaimed Martial Law.

Reports say, it began when Azerbaijan tried to reclaim some territories that are in Armenian hands. The fighting hasn't stopped and both sides have refused to hold a dialogue to end hostilities.

There are two reasons why this can be dangerous to the world.

One, the conflict can become a proxy battle for Turkey and Russia

Two, This conflict could disrupt crucial oil and gas supplies. The conflict is getting worldwide attention because of Russia and Turkey's involvement. The Russians back Armenia while Turkey supports Azerbaijan.

Turkish President Erdogan is even raising the spectre of war while the world is appealing both nations to ceae hostilities.

Erdogan has called Armenians invaders. He even said that if Azerbaijan wanted to fight, Turkey would support it.

"As a matter of fact, the clashes that began with the attacks on Azerbaijan by Armenians who occupy Nagorno-Karabakh, is a concrete example of this (the potential of a new flare-up in Caucasus). Once again, I would like to reiterate from here that we stand by our Azeri brothers in their fight to liberate their occupied lands and protect their homeland," said Erdogan.

Russia and Turkey have found each other on opposite sides again. Both countries already support rival factions in Syria and Libya.

The fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh could also hit regional oil and gas supplies Two key gas pipelines pass through the conflict zone.

The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan crude pipeline is Azerbaijan's main oil artery to world markets. The South Caucasus gas pipeline supplies to Turkey and European countries. If the fighting continues there could be disruptions.

The conflict between the two countries is often referred to as a 'frozen conflict'. We are witnessing worst fighting in decades. Global concerns are mounting. Risk of a full-blown war now looks real.

Armenia-Azerbaijan clash: Pakistan refutes claims of its involvement

Armenian and Azerbaijani forces have intensified their shelling as French President Emmanuel Macron said jihadist militants had been deployed to Nagorny Karabakh in a "serious" new development.

The West and Moscow renewed calls to halt several days of fighting over the disputed Nagorny Karabakh region that has left more than 130 dead and threatened to draw in regional powers Turkey and Russia.

In a joint appeal on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump and Macron urged the two sides to return to negotiations aimed at resolving their longstanding territorial dispute.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev have both rejected the idea of holding talks, with the Armenian leader stating: "Nagorno-Karabakh cannot disarm, because it would lead to genocide."

"The people who live there face an existential threat," Pashinyan told French newspaper Le Figaro.

But Russia suggested it was making progress in diplomatic efforts with Turkey, a firm supporter of Azerbaijan in the conflict.

It said Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu had confirmed they were ready for "close coordination" to stabilise the situation.

In Martuni, a small town in Karabakh around 25 kilometres (15 miles) from the front line, residents took refuge in cellars as heavy shelling by Azerbaijan killed four civilians and wounded 11.

Artak Aloyan, a 54-year-old construction worker sheltering in his basement with an elderly neighbour, vowed to stay despite the worst clashes the contested region has seen for years.

"I built this house with my own hands. I will not go anywhere, that's that," he told AFP after a rocket attack. "I will die here in the last battle."

The Armenian defence ministry said fighting had intensified and its troops had repelled Azerbaijani attacks, downing helicopters and destroying drones and armoured vehicles.

It said Azerbaijani forces had fired on two villages inside Armenia, close to Karabakh, killing one civilian.

Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan said that 1,280 Azerbaijani troops had been killed and 2,700 wounded since Sunday, with both sides making claims of inflicting heavy casualties.

Azerbaijan's defence ministry said its forces had carried out "crushing artillery strikes" on Armenian troops. It denied claims that one of its helicopters was shot down and had crashed in Iran.

The two sides have accused each other of shelling civilian areas and ignored repeated calls from international leaders to halt the fighting.

Putin, Macron and Trump called for an "immediate cessation of hostilities" and urged the warring sides to commit to talks.

- 'Foreign fighters'-

Yerevan is in a military alliance of ex-Soviet countries led by Moscow and has accused Turkey of dispatching mercenaries from northern Syria to bolster Azerbaijan's forces in the Karabakh conflict.

It also claimed earlier this week that a Turkish F-16 fighter jet flying in support of Baku's forces had downed an Armenian SU-25 warplane, but Ankara and Baku denied the claim.

Pashinyan reiterated claims that mercenaries had joined the conflict, saying Azerbaijan and Turkey were fighting "with the help and involvement of foreign terrorist fighters".

"This terrorism equally threatens the United States, Iran, Russia, and France," he added.

His calls were echoed by Macron, who earlier said intelligence reports had established that 300 Syrian fighters drawn from "jihadist groups" from the Syrian city of Aleppo had passed through Turkey en route for Azerbaijan.

The French president said that a "red line has been crossed, which is unacceptable" and demanded an explanation from Ankara.

Azerbaijan's ally, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, has signalled his country's full backing for Baku's military and on Thursday called for Armenian troops to leave Karabakh.

- Civilian casualties -

Armenia has recorded the deaths of 104 soldiers and 13 civilians. Azerbaijan has not reported any military casualties but said 19 civilians were killed after Armenian shelling.

Karabakh's declaration of independence from Azerbaijan sparked a war in the early 1990s that claimed 30,000 lives, but it is still not recognised as independent by any country, including Armenia.

Armenia and Karabakh declared martial law and military mobilisation Sunday, while Azerbaijan imposed military rule and a curfew in large cities.

Talks to resolve the conflict have largely stalled since a 1994 ceasefire agreement.

Armenian and Azerbaijani forces have intensified their shelling as French President Emmanuel Macron said jihadist militants had been deployed to Nagorny Karabakh in a "serious" new development.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev have both rejected the idea of holding talks, with the Armenian leader stating: "Nagorno-Karabakh cannot disarm, because it would lead to genocide." "The people who live there face an existential threat," Pashinyan told French newspaper Le Figaro. "I will die here in the last battle." - 'Crushing strikes' - The rival Caucasus nations have been locked in a bitter stalemate over Karabakh since the collapse of the Soviet Union when the ethnic Armenian region broke away from Azerbaijan. In the fiercest clashes in years, 136 people have been confirmed dead in fighting that has raged for five days. Day 6 of Armenia-Azerbaijan clashes: Hundreds killed dozens wounded

In a big development, Armenia has said that it "can't exclude the possibility" of Pakistani fighters on the ground fight along with "mercenaries operating in Azerbaijan". Armenia's Deputy Foreign Minister Avet Adonts speaking to our Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal from Yerevan said," It won't be a surprise for us", recalling how in the 1990s Pakistani nationals were present when war broke in Nagorno Karabakh. He also slammed turkey for sending Jihadis to Azerbaijan explaining "this imposed or instigated war" has been "well planned jointly with Turkey". Clashes have broken between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the past few days over the Nagorno Karabakh region leaving several dead and fears of spillover in the region.

"Can't exclude the possibility", says Armenia on Pakistani fighters on ground amid clashes

Clashes have broken between Armenia and Azerbaijan in past few days over Nagorno Karabakh region leaving several dead and fears of spillover in the region.

WION: What is the current situation at the Armenia-Azerbaijan?
Avet Adonts: The dictatorship of Azerbaijan backed by Turkey instigated large scale war. Large scale war is taking place on the ground. On September 27, early morning between 6 to 7 am, they — Azerbaijan with its military instruments, the airplanes, heavy artillery, tanks all possible supply to start a massive attack towards nagorno karabakh along the entire contact line between nagorno karabakh and Azerbaijan, targeting the civilian population, capital of the area and many casualties are there. Defence forces of Nagorno Karabakh has reacted in a defensive manner, but in a targetted way but in a defensive manner to the aggression by Azeri military forces jointly with the Turkish. The military operation, defensive operations of nagorno karabakh is providing security of its population, it is about 150,000 people of Armenian origin which used to live there. Its a large scale war between nagorno karabakh and Azerbaijan backed by Turkey. They are expanding the geography of this war, they are approaching Armenian as well, taking into account — on Armenian territory, the Armenia aeroplane has been down days ago. We have witnessed next to the capital to Armenia the drones of Azerbaijan. They were downed, but it is another attempt to provoke another escalation.

WION: What kind of global support you are getting?
Avet Adonts: The international community is well aware, this imposed or instigated war has been well planned, well planned jointly with Turkey. So, its very obvious, obvious documentary proof. No alternative opinion. The situation needs a de escalation, its very obvious. All the international community, with its leaders, are calling to de-escalate the situation. To stop the military operation, but the destination of all these urgent calls are Azerbaijan and Turkey. Why I am saying Turkey, because, Turkey is very much involved, within the military operation which has been initiated by Azerbaijan. It is a new component of part of the political map, they are practically there--helping not only politically, supporting the country politically as well in a very practical way, the military presence, weapon system, starting with the planes, ending with the drones and military personnel.

WION: Turkey's role in the situation? Is it sending Jihadis?
Avet Adonts: This is not a question, many people and media were questioning days ago. It is very obvious. Not only Jihadis but mercenaries from Northern Part of Syria. They have arrived in Azerbaijan, via Turkey and Turkey was very instrumental in the recruitment process. The number is very different, starting with 1000, ending with 5000. It is very very obvious, proven that they are there, there to fight against Nagorno Karabakh people.

WION: What do you expect from India?
Avet Adonts: First, we value very much quality and dynamics of our cooperation with India. India is very much crucial partner for Armenia, not only in our bilateral agenda but also within the region and international agenda. This is very much in line with the treaty of friendship and cooperation we are implementing jointly with India. As I mentioned in beginning, the de-escalation is very important as well as the unacceptability of this is hugely important. The joint statement produced by OSCE Minsk group — Russia, US, France, Putin, Trump, macron, they have called for stopping the military operation and the 3rd party is very much involved, the name of 3rd party is Turkey.

WION: Reports of Pakistani support in terms of sending men on the ground? True?
Avet Adonts: You know, the single country that has supported Azerbaijan in it, within this development. The single country is Turkey with its military and political support, and Pakistan. Many medias are reporting, Pakistani fighters have left Pakistan, and again via Turkey they have reached Azerbaijan to join the mercenaries operating in Azerbaijan. It won't be a surprise for us. Practically it will be proven very soon.

WION: Your think, considerable possibility of Pakistani nationals on the ground?
Avet Adonts: We can't exclude this possibility, taking into account, they used to act in the same way at the beginning of 90s during the large scale war in Nagorno karabakh. With ceasefire agreement in 1994, these guys were there, of Pakistani origin. It would not be a surprise for us if they will be present this time as well. Since Thursday different media have been aggressive, reporting they are already there.

Exclusive: 'Can't exclude the possibility', says Armenia on Pakistani fighters on ground amid clashes

Armenia has expressed readiness to work with international mediators to establish a ceasefire with Azerbaijan over the breakaway Nagorny-Karabakh region where fierce fighting entered a sixth day.

Armenia's foreign ministry on Friday said it "stands ready" to engage with the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) "to re-establish a ceasefire regime" in Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The Caucasus neighbours have been locked in a simmering conflict for decades over the region and new fighting that erupted on Sunday has been the heaviest in decades.

France, Russia and the United States, co-chairs of the OSCE's Minsk Group, set up in 1992 to mediate in the conflict between Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenians over the mountainous enclave in the South Caucasus, called for an immediate ceasefire on Thursday. But Turkey said the three big powers should have no role in peace moves.

Nearly 200 people have been confirmed killed since Sunday, including more than 30 civilians, and there are fears of the fighting expanding into an all-out, multi-front war that could suck in regional powers Turkey and Russia.

Armenia and Karabakh declared martial law and military mobilisation Sunday, while Azerbaijan imposed military rule and a curfew in large cities.

Talks to resolve the conflict have largely stalled since a 1994 ceasefire agreement.
