Bangladesh govt's adviser Nahid Islam resigns, likely to launch new political party

Bangladesh's deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina&rsquo;s Awami League would not be allowed to participate in elections, a key adviser of Muhammad Yunus's interim government said on Saturday (Jan 25).
"The elections will be contested among pro-Bangladesh groups only,&rdquo; said Mahfuz Alam, a top leader of the Anti-Discrimination Movement, which spearheaded the mass uprising that toppled Hasina&rsquo;s Awami League regime and forced her to flee the country on August 5 last year.
Addressing a street rally at central Chandpur district, Mr. Alam said only former prime minister Khaleda Zia&rsquo;s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islam and other &ldquo;pro-Bangladesh&rdquo; groups would carry on their politics in the country. He added that either of these &ldquo;will establish future governance through a fair electoral process&rdquo;.
"But Awami League&rsquo;s rehabilitation will not be allowed in this country,&rdquo; said Alam, a de facto minister without portfolio in Chief Adviser Yunus&rsquo;s administration.
Mr. Alam stated that no election would take place until "minimum reforms" were implemented and institutions, allegedly destroyed by the "fascist Hasina government," were restructured.

Court officials and lawyers said three top leaders or coordinators of the movement – Sarjis Alam, Hasnat Abdullah and Hasibul Islam – decided not to proceed with the petition that also questioned the past three general elections in 2014, 2018 and 2024 which installed the Hasina-led Awami League to power

The elections were staged amid allegations of massive vote manipulation or boycott by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia and several other parties.

The movement leaders, however, preferred not to proceed with the second writ either that questioned the legitimacy of these three parliamentary elections.

The two writs, listed by a two-member high court bench for hearing on Tuesday, were withdrawn as the proceedings began in the morning.

The petitioners' lawyers informed the bench that their clients would not proceed with the writs.

The bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Shikdar Mahmudur Raji subsequently ordered the writs be removed from the list.

Alongside Awami League, the writ petition was filed against Jatiya Party (Ershad), Jatiya Party (Manju), Ganatantri Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, Bangladesh Tarikat Federation, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Communist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist-Leninist) (Barua), and Workers Party of Bangladesh.

In response to their inclusion in the petition, the LDP demanded an apology from the petitioners.

The CPB said they might have been mentioned out of a misunderstanding, and the Jatiya Party (Ershad) said they would address the matter through legal means.

The right-wing LDP and left-wing CPB were harsh critics of the Awami League regime and did not take part in the elections.

The BNP, which has appeared as the major political force in Bangladesh politics following Hasina's ouster, however, said they opposed a ban on any political party for inclusiveness in elections. Meanwhile, the interim government on Monday evening said it had yet not decided upon banning any political party.

The government only has banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (pro-Awami League student organisation). It did not decide at this point to ban any other political party, a spokesman from the Bangladesh interim government's media wing said in a briefing.

The students' movement in a rally on October 22 at Central Shaheed Minar here announced a five-point demand, including the ban on Awami League and the removal of President Mohammad Shahabuddin after protests erupted following his remarks that he did not receive Hasina's resignation.

Amid controversy, Hasina batted for India as during a speech on Wednesday, she said, "They must answer if they can eat without Indian spices. I want to know if they have truly boycotted Indian products."&nbsp;

"The BNP leaders are advocating for boycotting Indian products. My question is – how many Indian sarees do the boycott campaigners' wives possess? Why don't they take the sarees from their wives and burn them?" she added.&nbsp;

Rizvi responded to Hasina's comments and said that leaders of the BNP usually do not buy Indian sarees. He further claimed that during a visit to India a long time ago, his maternal uncle gifted an Indian saree to his wife.&nbsp;

In a separate incident, BNP's senior joint secretary general also said that Hasina has to fulfil all demands of neighbouring countries but she cannot raise her voice against India.&nbsp;

Nine idols in Sindurpindi and four in Collegepara area of Paria Union and fourteen idols in a temple in Sahbajpur Nathpara area of Charol Union were also desecrated.

Unfortunately, police have not been as active as they should have been. The Hindu community in Bangladesh, which is always in minority, is distressed on repeated assaults on their religion and deities by Islamic fanatics. According to them, in the latest incident, many idols were not only destroyed but were found inside the pond&nbsp;along the temple locations. Local leaders say that such communal violence targeting Hindu idols in this particular region is unprecedented and undermines interfaith harmony.

Meanwhile, Hindu social and cultural groups have angrily reacted over this incident calling for a fair and impartial investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. Leading politicians assess that in view of the upcoming elections, likely within this year, chances of such attacks&nbsp;in order to whip up communal frenzy have spiked. Clearly, this is the handiwork of communally inclined fanatical elements who thrive only on the politics of religion.&nbsp;

In the meantime,&nbsp;politicking for the next Bangladesh election is steadily entering into a feverish pitch and the opposition Bangladesh National Party (BNP) has intensified its meetings and rallies. They are in a mood for provocation so that the law and order agencies unleash a crackdown on them or spark communal violence to discredit the present regime so as to deprive them of the votes they are ordinarily banking upon. &nbsp;

Economic issues are highlighted time and again and the opposition in their rhetoric are raising apprehensions about a Sri Lanka type economic meltdown so as to confuse the countrywide electorate. On its part, the ruling Awami League (AL) has started highlighting its achievements in the preceding five years outlining the development projects, construction of Padma Bridge, and effective control over the crime &amp; law and order situation. &nbsp;

AL has also projected in its progress report, various successes attained on its external policies maintaining harmonious&nbsp;relations with many countries including the ones in the neighbourhood. &nbsp;AL also claims, while assuring the people, that 2024 elections will be peaceful, inclusive and competitive. However, critics of AL feel that while development work&nbsp;in Bangladesh has&nbsp;shown stellar results and the average income and life expectancy has&nbsp;increased, development alone can not win popularity or people’s confidence. According to them, people want further freedom of speech, freedom of thought and freedom of media.

AL leaders are hopeful that over the past 14 years, they have taken the country along the development highway, that people will spontaneously vote for them and bring them to power in the next election. All said and done, &nbsp;the Jihadi elements in Bangladesh are looking for an opportune movement to capitalise the communal situation so as to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere, divide the society, and sow seeds of discord to blame Hasina for her alleged pro-India and pro-minority policies. &nbsp;In this regard, the seculars, the progressive civil right groups and the intelligentsia must play a pivotal role in keeping the communal elements in check ensuring the deserving party is victorious to defeat the regressive forces for a strong and secular Bangladesh maintaining warm relations with India and other countries.

Unfortunately, police have not been as active as they should have been. The Hindu community in Bangladesh, which is always in minority, is distressed on repeated assaults on their religion and deities by Islamic fanatics. According to them, in the latest incident, many idols were not only destroyed but were found inside the pond along the temple locations. Local leaders say that such communal violence targeting Hindu idols in this particular region is unprecedented and undermines interfaith harmony. Meanwhile, Hindu social and cultural groups have angrily reacted over this incident calling for a fair and impartial investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. Leading politicians assess that in view of the upcoming elections, likely within this year, chances of such attacks in order to whip up communal frenzy have spiked. Clearly, this is the handiwork of communally inclined fanatical elements who thrive only on the politics of religion. In the meantime, politicking for the next Bangladesh election is steadily entering into a feverish pitch and the opposition Bangladesh National Party (BNP) has intensified its meetings and rallies. They are in a mood for provocation so that the law and order agencies unleash a crackdown on them or spark communal violence to discredit the present regime so as to deprive them of the votes they are ordinarily banking upon. Economic issues are highlighted time and again and the opposition in their rhetoric are raising apprehensions about a Sri Lanka type economic meltdown so as to confuse the countrywide electorate. On its part, the ruling Awami League (AL) has started highlighting its achievements in the preceding five years outlining the development projects, construction of Padma Bridge, and effective control over the crime & law and order situation. AL has also projected in its progress report, various successes attained on its external policies maintaining harmonious relations with many countries including the ones in the neighbourhood. AL also claims, while assuring the people, that 2024 elections will be peaceful, inclusive and competitive. However, critics of AL feel that while development work in Bangladesh has shown stellar results and the average income and life expectancy has increased, development alone can not win popularity or people’s confidence. According to them, people want further freedom of speech, freedom of thought and freedom of media. "The people want freedom from this authoritarian regime,"&nbsp;Alamgir said.

"Now they (BNP) are saying they will wage a movement getting beside them the extreme leftists and rightists as companions," she told a party discussion, Press Trust of India reported.&nbsp;

"Let me tell you (BNP) one thing. The Awami League works for the people and their welfare. Don’t think it will fall if one shakes it. Things are not that easy."

As Awami League prepares for the general elections in early 2024, the party has picked Obaidul Quader as general secretary at the 22nd national council, which was a closed-door session.&nbsp;

Local reports have mentioned that nearly 7,000 councillors from across Bangladesh joined the national council at an auditorium in central Dhaka. The meeting was followed by an open rally at adjacent Suhrawardy Udyan.&nbsp;

The Daily Star reported on Saturday that the prime minister earlier reached Suhrawardy Udyan around 10:20am (local time) and she inaugurated the council by hoisting the national flag and releasing a white pigeon and balloons.&nbsp;

News agency PTI cited party sources to report that Hasina's name was proposed by senior Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amu and the decision was accepted by everybody present at the meeting.&nbsp;

The report mentioned that during the conversation with the outlet, some of the party leaders said through this conference that they are expecting strong leadership.&nbsp;

They also said that with they need someone who will play a strong role for the party ahead of the next national election.&nbsp;

The 75-year-old will lead the party for the next three years—a term under the party constitution. Hasina (75) has remained the head of the party since 1981 when she returned home from India where she was living a self-exiled life since August 1975.&nbsp;

Sheikh Hasina elected Awami League president for 10th consecutive term

A Bangladeshi opposition leader was sentenced to three years in prison for allegedly giving death threats to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at an event last year.

A Chittagong court awarded in absentia the prison sentence to Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury, the vice-chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

The court also slapped a fine of 5,000 Bangladeshi takas on the BNP leader with an additional three-month prison term for failure to pay the fine, Additional Public Prosecutor Sameer Das Gupta was quoted by bdnews24 as saying.

On May 29 last year, Chowdhury had allegedly said at a function that Hasina's fate would turn out to be "worse" than that of her father and country's founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was assassinated in 1975.

The next day, ruling Awami League general secretary of Fatikchhari unit, Nazimuddin Muhuri, had filed a case in the court against the BNP leader for his alleged comments, court sources told The Dhaka Tribune.

The court had issued an arrest warrant against Chowdhury on May 31 of that year.

Chowdhury is the younger brother of Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, who was executed in 2015 in connection with his role in war crimes committed in 1971 during the Liberation War.

Nearly a million Rohingya live in squalid camps in southeast Bangladesh, 740,000 of whom fled a 2017 military offensive against the Muslim minority in Myanmar.

Rights activists, who asked not to be named, said they believe the two Rohingya men were killed by police in what appeared to be a staged encounter.

The incident comes two days after a second failed attempt to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/no-rohingya-turn-up-for-repatriation-to-myanmar-244744">repatriate the refugees</a>, which saw not a single Rohingya turn up to return across the border to conflict-scarred Rakhine state.

"Both men died as they were rushed to a hospital," local police inspector Rasel Ahmad told AFP, adding that the incident took place in Jadimura refugee camp in Cox's Bazar district.

Ahmad said the two Rohingya were shot and critically injured during a manhunt for suspects after a youth wing official of the ruling Awami League party was killed, allegedly by armed refugees.

Awami League official Omar Faruk was shot in the head on Thursday, at a settlement near the border town of Teknaf, Ahmad said.&nbsp;

His murder had sparked anger among the local population, with hundreds of furious people blocking a key highway leading to the camps for hours, burning tyres and vandalising shops visited by refugees.

Ahmad said the two men killed on Saturday had been identified as key suspects in Faruk's killing and added that they had been shot while the officers were ambushed by the suspected criminals.

"It was wrong of the refugees to agitate the locals. We want justice in the quickest possible time," said Abdul Matin, a friend of the deceased politician.

Refugees said the recent bloodshed has created an atmosphere of fear in the camps, where security has been tightened.

The killings came as the Rohingya are set to commemorate the second anniversary of their mass influx into Bangladesh from Rakhine after the brutal military campaign.

UN investigators have said the 2017 violence warrants the prosecution of top Myanmar generals for "genocide".

Bangladesh police shoot dead two Rohingya in refugee camp

Bangladesh Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina on Sunday greeted the countrymen on the occasion of the 70th founding anniversary of Awami League Party.

In a message, Sheikh Hasina said that party along with the people would build a hunger and poverty free, happy and prosperous 'Sonar Bangla' as dreamt by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh.

"On this day I recall with respect the greatest Bengali of all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. I recall Awami League’s founder president Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani and general secretary, Shamsul Haque," she said.

"Under the leadership of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, this organisation (Awami League Party) was well organised in the whole of Bangladesh. He also led the party to be elected in the 1970 election and the first sun of independent Bangladesh government rose on April 10 and April 17 at the Amrakanon of Meherpur in 1971," she said.
