Two Australian men dug up two uggets but those weren't ordinary nuggets. These nuggets are worth nearly $250,000.

The nuggets are gold nuggets and have a combined weight of 3.5 kgs in a goldmining town Tarnagulla in Victoria state by miners Brent Shannon and Ethan West.

The two men have been digging up gold for the past four years and claim to have found thousands of such pieces.

"These are definitely one of the most significant finds," Ethan West said. "To have two large chunks in one day is quite amazing."

The gold nuggets were found within a couple of hours, with the help of Ethan West's dad on what they decribe as a "virgin ground, which means it's untouched and hasn't been mined."

The duo said they were not entriely sure but "I reckoned we were in for a chance," Brent Shannon said.

After finding the gold, the duo found fame when they got featured in a local TV show called 'Aussie Gold Hunters', which revolves around the plot of following teams of gold prospectors who dig in goldfields in remote parts of Australia.

Experts belive the duo can sell the nuggets for more than 30 per cent of the estimated value, which is currently US $ 250,000 (A$350,000).

Tarnagulla is a town that was itself found during the Victoria Gold Rush and was once known to be a very wealthy town.

A fresh outbreak of infections in Australia's coronavirus hot zone of Victoria appeared to have eased on Wednesday, as the country signed a deal to secure a potential COVID-19 vaccine that it intends to roll out free of cost to its citizens.

Australia has signed a deal with British drugmaker AstraZeneca to produce and distribute enough doses of a potential coronavirus vaccine for its population of 25 million, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said late on Tuesday.

The Australian government estimates that up to 95 percent of the population would need to be immune to the virus for it to be irradicated.

All Australians will be offered doses but a medical panel will determine the priority list of vaccine recipients, Health Minister Greg Hunt said.

"Naturally you would be focusing on the most vulnerable, the elderly, health workers, people with disabilities in terms of the speed of roll out, but I think there would be widespread uptake in Australia," Hunt said.

AstraZeneca last month said good data was coming in so far on its vaccine for COVID-19, already in large-scale human trials and widely seen as the front-runner in the race for a shot against the novel coronavirus.

The vaccine, called AZD1222, was developed by Britain`s University of Oxford and licensed to AstraZeneca.

The coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 400 Australians, has coincided with a sharp uptick in online misinformation, speculation and opposition to vaccines, something experts have dubbed an "infodemic".

A flare up in infections in Australia`s second most populous state of Victoria forced authorities two weeks ago to impose a nightly curfew, tighten restrictions on people`s movements and order large parts of the state's economy to close.

The southeastern state has seen a slowdown in new cases in recent days, allaying fears of a nationwide second wave of infections.
Victoria reported 216 new daily cases in the last 24 hours compared with 222 a day earlier. It reported 12 deaths compared with 17 on Tuesday.

Despite seeing a surge of new infections in the past month, Australia has largely avoided the high casualties of other nations with just under 24,000 infections and 450 deaths from the virus.

Google has urged YouTubers around the world to complain to Australian authorities as it ratchets up its campaign against a plan to force digital giants to pay for news content.

Alongside pop-ups warning "the way Aussies use Google is at risk", which began appearing for Australian Google users on Monday, the tech titan also urged YouTube creators worldwide to complain to the nation's consumer watchdog.

"The YouTube you know and love is at risk in Australia," the company tweeted from its YouTube Creators account on Monday, also encouraging those outside of Australia to email their concerns to the body behind the plan.

With a surge in coronavirus cases, Australian government has been trying every possible way to contain the spread of the virus.

A new regulation issued by the government is a temporary ban for children from playing any kind of wind instrument or participating in choir, claiming these could lead to spread of the infection.

"All group singing and/or other chanting activities, as well as the use of wind instruments in group settings, are not permitted," the local education authority of New South Wales said.

COVID-19: Australian state bans choir practices and wind instruments in schools

Internet giant Google on Monday criticised proposed Australian antitrust laws, saying its free search service would be "at risk" and users' personal data could be shared if it is made to pay news organisations for their content.

The US-based company's warning, contained in what it called an "Open letter to Australians," comes a week before public consultations close on Australian draft laws that would make both Google and Facebook pay for news siphoned from commercial media companies.

Google said the proposed laws would also help big media companies artificially inflate their search rankings, luring more viewers to their platforms and giving them an unfair advantage over small publishers and users of Google's YouTube streaming website.

The statement, advertised on Google's main search page, marks an escalation of tensions between big tech companies and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) which has called for sweeping changes to rein in how Google and social media titan Facebook Inc use local content and consumer data.

"You've always relied on Google Search and YouTube to show you what's most relevant and helpful to you," Google Australia Managing Director Mel Silva wrote in the open letter.

"We could no longer guarantee that under this law."

The proposed law "wouldn't just impact the way Google and YouTube work with news media businesses - it would impact all of our Australian users" she wrote.

The ACCC accused Google of publishing "misinformation" and said the laws would not require the US company to charge Australians for its services or share any personal data.

The proposed law would "allow Australian news businesses to negotiate for fair payment for their journalists' work that is included on Google services", ACCC chair Rod Sims said in a statement.

"This will address a significant bargaining power imbalance between Australian news media businesses and Google and Facebook," he added.

Google has been battling the Australian consumer watchdog on two fronts. Last month, the watchdog launched court action against Google for allegedly misleading account holders about its use of their personal data.

The commission alleges that Google misled millions of Australians to obtain their consent and expand the scope of personal information that it collects about users' internet activity to target advertising. Google denies the allegations.

People do anything to save their loved ones from troubles, and one man in Australia went into a fist-fight with a shark to save his wife.

Chantelle Doyle, a 35-year-old woman, was surfing at the Shelly Beach when she was attacked by a 2 to 3 metre shark.

After Doyle cried for help, her husband jumped to rescue her. In what is being described as a 'heroic act', he punched the great white shark and saved his wife. The incident happened at Port Macquarie in New South Wales.

Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steven Pearce said, "This fella paddled over and jumped off his board onto the shark and hit it to get it to release her and then assisted her back into the beach,” Pearce said. “Pretty full on, really heroic."

The victim was treated by the onlookers and the paramedics at the port itself, and was later flown to Newcastle hospital. Her condition remains stable, and she will be recovering soon, the medical team claimed.

Inspector Andrew Beverley, of Ambulance NSW, said, "The bystanders on scene that rendered assistance should be commended. They did an amazing job."

Immediately after the attack, the beach was closed down for the surfers and visitors. Pearce said his team was also providing coastal surveillance of the area to help spot the shark. This is the third serious shark attack in this particular stretch of the coast.

When he was sent to Darwin to "man the radar" in 1942, Lindsay Dufty was just an 18-year-old soldier. Shortly after he arrived, 240 Japanese aircraft bombed the port city in two raids on February 19, killing 240 civilians as well as Australian and U.S. service personnel. The Japanese sank eight ships in the harbour, according to Australian government records. Dufty, now 97, remembers seeing the Japanese pilots' faces as they bombed the city, the first ever enemy attack over Australian soil.

Australia recorded its deadliest day of the coronavirus pandemic on Wednesday and the biggest daily rise in infections in three days, denting hopes that a second wave gripping the state of Victoria may be stabilising.

Victoria reported 21 deaths - two more than the previous deadliest days earlier this week - and 410 new cases in the past 24 hours, ending a run of three consecutive days with new infections below 400.

A cluster of infections in Melbourne, the Victorian capital and Australia's second-largest city, forced authorities last week to impose a night curfew, tighten restrictions on people's daily movements and order large parts of state economy to close.

National figures for the past 24 hours have yet to be released but outside the two largest states of Victoria and New South Wales (NSW) the virus has been effectively eliminated.

Authorities in NSW are scrambling to trace infections linked to a new cluster at a school in Sydney, which has raised fears of more widespread community transmission than previously known in Australia's most-populous state.

Australia has reported just over 22,000 infections and 352 deaths from the virus.

Australia suffers deadliest day of coronavirus pandemic, cases rise

As Australia recorded the highest single-day spike of coronavirus cases, the Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Monday that the internal city borders will stay sealed, until further notice.

"I am more hopeful of that today than I was in the course of the past week," Morrison said on Monday. The step is being taken after due consideration about how to tackle the spread of the novel coronavirus.

He also added that the government is aware that some people are stranded away from home, and urged the state officials to cooperate in helping these stranded residents reach back their home state.

With cases on a rise, Morrison made it clear that the government is not putting an end date, or even assume one, on the lockdown for now. "If I could paint you a picture that had any kind of reliability for next week, let alone five weeks away, then, of course, I would," he added.

Health experts have claimed the lockdown should not be lifted before Christmas.

Australia has still recorded one of the lowest surge in cases in the world with around 21,000 COVID-19 cases and 314 deaths. The country had, however, once declared a win over the novel coronavirus, but the state of Victoria identified few new clusters after reopening of the economy, which sent the country into a stricter lockdown.

Morrison also urged residents to stay home and step out only in cases of emergency. He also requested people to wear masks and maintain social distance at all times, when outside.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has extended his lead as the country's most preferred leader, a poll showed on Monday, boosted by his government's coronavirus wage subsidy scheme and efforts to contain the spread of the pandemic.

A Newspoll conducted for The Australian newspaper showed Morrison enjoyed the best approval rating over an opposition leader in more than five years.

Morrison's popularity fell over his handling of bush fires late last year but he has improved his standing with his response to the pandemic, as the country battles a new wave of infections in Victoria state.

Morrison jettisoned his conservative government's aversion to deficits to pledge spending worth about A$100 billion ($71.50 billion) to employers to keep staff they might otherwise have let go.

With just over 21,400 infections and 314 deaths from the virus, Australia has fared better than many other developed nations, helped by strict lockdowns that are expected to push unemployment up towards 10%.

The foreign ministers of the five countries have shown their "grave concern" towards Hong Kong government’s unjust disqualification of candidates and disproportionate postponement of Legislative Council elections. "These moves have undermined the democratic process that has been fundamental to Hong Kong’s stability and prosperity." They urged "the Hong Kong government to hold the elections as soon as possible". According to Hong Kong's current chief executive Carrie Lam, it would be logical to extend the term of the legislature at present. But the question remains on the four opposition lawmakers who have been disqualified from seeking re-election for breaching the new security law bill. These lawmakers were disqualified after calling for international sanctions on Beijing and Hong Kong. The foreign ministers of the five nations, in a statement, urged for the disqualified legislators to be reinstated. The joint statement from the five countries that share intelligence under the "Five Eyes" partnership said the security law was "eroding the Hong Kong people’s fundamental rights and liberties. "We support the legitimate expectations of the people of Hong Kong to elect Legislative Council representatives via genuinely free, fair, and credible elections," they added. On Friday, the United States imposed sanctions on a group of Chinese and Hong Kong officials, including Carrie Lam, involved in enforcing the highly controversial security law. (Inputs from AFP)

The ambassador visited the academician on Sunday as Kylie's family was worried about her health and welfare, after she was recently moved to the women's prison, which is in an old chicken-processing factory outside Tehran.

After the ambassador's visit, Moore-Gilbert's family said they "have been reassured" about her health.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade assured the family that the academician was well and had proper access to food, books and medical facilities.

Moore-Gilbert was a lecturer in Islamic Studies at the University of Melbourne and is believed to be detained in Iran in 2018, although Iran confirmed the detention only in September 2019. She was detained on the charges of spying, which she has denied. She is sentenced to 10 years in prison.

"We continue to believe that Kylie's best chance at release is through diplomatic avenues," the statement released by the foreign ministry said.

Online groups such as "Free Kylie" have been surfacing in the past few months asking the government to try every possible way to bring the academic back home. However, the Australian government has asked people to not demand more ' muscular' ways and has assured that the government will keep trying for regular consular access.

Australia has closed the national park home to its revered indigenous site of Uluru after some in the community blocked an access route for fear that visitors could carry in coronavirus infections.

The country is battling a new wave of the deadly virus, with southeastern Victoria state reeling from hundreds of infections, while Indigenous Australians are seen at greater risk as they suffer a higher incidence of other health woes.

"It's up to tourists to stay away if they come from hotspots or are sick," Thalia Bohl-Van Den Boogaard, the representative of a group of Indigenous Australians protesting against the visits, told Reuters by telephone.

A few protesters from the indigenous community stood on the main entrance road to the park on Tuesday, down from the previous day's numbers of between 30 and 40 that had turned away tourists before the attraction closed, she said.

The group was concerned by the arrival in a nearby town of 39 people from the northeastern city of Brisbane, a declared virus hotspot, said Bohl-Van Den Boogaard, the chief executive of the Mutitjulu Community Aboriginal Corporation.

"People here have been locked in their communities for months and months to contain the spread, and now it's not up to them to do the right thing," she added, urging visitors to keep away.

About 350 tourists have visited the park following July's re-opening of the state's borders since closure in March during the first wave of the pandemic, Bohl-Van Den Boogaard said.

Australia's second-most populous state Victoria said on Tuesday military personnel will be deployed to enforce COVID-19 isolation orders, with anyone caught in breach of those rules facing tough new fines.

Victoria earlier this week imposed a night curfew, tightened restrictions on people's daily movements and ordered large parts of the local economy to close to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Andrews said 500 military personnel will this week deploy to Victoria to bolster enforcement of self-isolation orders, with fines of nearly A$5,000 ($3,559.00) for breaching stay at home orders. The only exemption will be for urgent medical care.

A tourist snorkelling off Australia's pristine northwest coast was struck by a whale, and was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition.

The victim was exploring near the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef in the Indian Ocean when she was struck by the tail of one of the giant creatures. The area is well known for its close encounters with whale sharks and the even larger humpbacks.

The woman was transferred to a remote airport for evacuation and emergency treatment in Perth.

She sustained "chest injuries" and was said to be in a "serious but stable condition."

Australia on Sunday introduced sweeping new measures to control a growing coronavirus outbreak in its second-biggest city, including an overnight curfew and a ban on weddings for the first time during the pandemic.

Despite a lockdown that began in early July, Melbourne has continued to report hundreds of new cases daily, and authorities said the city's residents would now face a curfew from 8 pm to 5 am for the next six weeks.

Declaring a "state of disaster" on Sunday, Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said the state capital would move to Stage 4 restrictions until September 13 given "unacceptably high" levels of community transmission.

Melbourne residents will be limited to an hour of exercise a day, no further than five kilometres (about three miles) from home starting Sunday night.

Only one person per household will be able to shop for essential items each day, also within the same strict radius.

Most school and university students in Melbourne will return to online learning from midnight Wednesday, just weeks after returning to their classrooms, while kindergartens and daycare centres will be effectively closed from Thursday.

Weddings will also be banned in the city. At the height of the first wave of the pandemic, weddings in Australia were limited to five people.

"These are the decisions made because anything short of this will not keep us safe," Andrews said.

"Anything short of this will see it drag on for months and months and months."

Additional restrictions affecting workplaces would be announced Monday, Andrews added, suggesting that non-essential businesses will face closures.

The state recorded 671 new COVID-19 cases and seven deaths from the virus on Sunday.

Outside Melbourne, the rest of Victoria will move to a Stage 3 lockdown from midnight Wednesday with people allowed to leave home only for work, study, care and essential shopping.

Elsewhere in Australia, other states and territories have for weeks reported zero or a small number of cases while relaxing restrictions.

They have, however, banned visitors from Victoria and Sydney -- another virus hotspot.

Australia's total reported infections reached almost 18,000 on Sunday, with 208 deaths in a population of 25 million.

The number of Hong Kong citizens applying to study at Australian universities has hit a three-year-high midway through 2020, according to government data, amid fears a new security law is ushering in a more authoritarian era for China`s freest city.

The rise in higher education applications from Hong Kong citizens in the first six months of the year contrasts with otherwise steep falls in the number of overseas students applying to study in Australia during the coronavirus pandemic.

The data released late on Thursday captured Hong Kong citizens` applications in the lead-up to the implementation of new security law late on June 30 which have exacerbated concerns over freedoms in the financial hub.

There was more than a 16% rise in applications from Hong Kong citizens in the first six months of 2020 compared to the corresponding period last year.

Australia is the third most popular destination for overseas students after the United States and United Kingdom, according to the International Education Association of Australia.

Australian universities expect more students from Hong Kong will apply for study visas after the government earlier this month said Hong Kong students, graduates and workers on temporary visas will have the opportunity to stay and work for an extra five years and apply for permanent residency after that time.

"We have seen a sharp increase in enquiries from Hong Kong nationals in Australia and residents in Hong Kong following the government announcement," director at Stirling Henry global migration Simon De Vere told Reuters.

Australia`s $37 billion (US $26.54 billion) education sector, the country`s second largest services export after tourism, has taken a massive economic hit from the pandemic with universities warning they might lose A$16 billion in revenue by 2023.

Much of that anticipated loss is due to declining enrolments from mainland Chinese students, which has fallen to the lowest levels recorded since 2012-13 in the first half of the year, government data shows.

Australia has also effectively closed its international borders, allowing only a very limited number of inbound passengers each day. Universities are seeking schemes to allow foreign students in via travel bubbles with other countries.

Hong Kong student applications to Australia hit three year high ahead of new security law

Australia on Friday unveiled a draft law to force Google and Facebook to pay news media for their content in a "world-leading" initiative sure to prompt a confrontation with the digital giants.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced the "mandatory code of conduct" to govern relations between the struggling news industry and the tech firms after 18 months of negotiations failed to bring the two sides together.

In addition to payment for content, the code covers issues like access to user data, transparency of algorithms and ranking of content in the platforms' news feeds and search results.

Frydenberg said legislation implementing the code would be introduced into parliament in the coming weeks and include "substantial penalties" that could cost the tech companies hundreds of millions of dollars.

While the code could eventually apply to any digital platform using Australian news content, Frydenberg said it would initially focus on Facebook and Google, two of the world's richest and most powerful companies.

Australia's initiative has been closely watched around the globe as news media worldwide have suffered in an increasingly digital economy where advertising revenue is overwhelmingly captured by Facebook, Google and other big tech firms.

The news industry crisis has been exacerbated by the economic collapse caused by the coronavirus pandemic, with dozens of Australian newspapers closed and hundreds of journalists sacked in recent months.

Facebook and Google have strongly opposed any move forcing them to share advertising revenue, hinting they could simply boycott Australian media if mandatory payments are imposed.

Frydenberg has said the aim was "not to protect Australian news media businesses from competition, or from disruption that's occurring across this sector" but rather "to create a level playing field to ensure a fair go for Australian news media businesses."

Under the code, drawn up by the Australian anti-trust watchdog ACCC, tech companies will be required to negotiate with news firms "in good faith" over payments for use of their content.

If agreement cannot be reached within three months, the issue will go to binding arbitration to determine the amount of payments.

The code also imposes a range of obligations on the digital platforms including providing advance notice of algorithm changes affecting news ranking and transparency over advertising run against news content.

Violations of the code will draw penalties of up to Aus$10 million (US$7 million) per breach or 10 percent of the company's local turnover, which the ACCC has estimated at some US$4 billion annually.

Australia: As diplomacy 'fails', friends of jailed scholar in Iran begin public campaign

Australia is to set up a U.S.-funded military fuel reserve in the city of Darwin, authorities said on Thursday, a show of stronger co-operation between the allies who both face increasing tension with China.

The chief minister of Australia`s Northern Territory, of which Darwin is the capital, confirmed the plan was part of a wider agreement between the allies to boost defence ties following high-level talks in Washington.

"What I am allowed to say is it will be thumpingly large, but the U.S. government will be spending the money to see it built," said a spokeswoman for the chief minister, Michael Gunner.

The agreement "recognises the Territory as one of the nation`s most strategically important defence locations ... and we stand ready to do more", the spokeswoman said.

Darwin, an isolated city of 130,000 people, is closer to some Asian capitals than to the Australian capital of Canberra.

The city has hosted a contingent of 1,250 U.S. Marines since 2011, under former President Barack Obama`s pivot to Asia following China`s increased assertiveness in the region.

A 2015 decision to grant a 99-year lease over the city`s port to China`s Landbridge Group Co, meanwhile, raised some eyebrows in the United States, which objects to China`s extensive claims in the South China Sea.

Jian Zhang, a Chinese foreign policy expert at University of New South Wales, said the fuel reserve facility in Australia would be useful for the United States in the event of any conflict with China.
