Australia looks set to sweat through one of its hottest Decembers ever, the national weather bureau said on Friday, prompting fire bans, health warnings and big crowds trying to cool off at beaches.

As the country's hottest town, Marble Bar in the remote northwest, endured its warmest day ever, forecasters said the heat would spread southeast where the big cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide would endure monthly average temperatures up to 16 degrees Celsius higher than usual.

The capital, Canberra, was bracing for its hottest December day on record -- 39C (102F) -- on Saturday.

"We're going to see December records tumbling," said Diana Eadie, a meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology.

"We're definitely not out of it yet, in fact I would say it's going to be peaking over more populated areas this weekend."

December is the beginning of the Southern Hemisphere summer. January and February can be even hotter.

For the four-fifths of Australia's 25 million people who live on the coast, the summer typically means lazing on the beach, watching cricket or both.

But the unusually high temperatures add to a sense of exhaustion for a farm economy already reeling from a year of drought.

"It adds insult to injury," said Laureta Wallace, a spokeswoman for the National Farmers' Federation.

"Most farmers would have got some rain prior to Christmas but the benefit of that will have been eroded with this heat wave. Water's an issue."

The Bureau of Meteorology put the hot spell down to a combination of hot air being blown from the northwest toward the densely populated southeast, where a "blocking" high off the coast was stopping cooler winds from moving it on.

The bureau's "extreme heatwave" warning, its highest category, includes Sydney for the next three days.

Sydney's inland suburbs were forecast to swelter in 40C (104F) heat.

Almost the entire state of New South Wales had a "high" or "very high" fire danger, according to the rural fire service.

A "low-intensity heatwave" in neighbouring Victoria state was expected to spread south almost as far as the second city Melbourne.

Health authorities have issued warnings for pregnant women, babies, people aged over 65 and people with lung conditions since the heat eroded air quality.

The town recognised by Australians as their hottest, Marble Bar, with a population 174, had a reprieve on Friday from its 49.1C (120.4F) record a day earlier, enjoying a relatively comfortable 41.1C (106F) by midday.

"You really don't want to be out digging holes in the middle of the ground, or chasing gold," Lang Coppin, a former cattle rancher and gold prospector, told Reuters from Marble Bar.

"What we've always done is do the physical work in the morning and then knock off. Be like the kangaroos and get under the tree."

Australia swelters through heatwave in hottest December ever

David Warner's isolation by Steve Smith and Camron Bancroft in their recent interviews will not impact the opening batsman's re-integration, Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts promised Thursday.

Both Smith and Bancroft held Warner responsible for the ball tampering scandal, which led to imposition of bans on all three cricketers.

While both Smith and Bancroft accepted their own responsibility in committing the mistake during the Test against South Africa at Centurion in March, they sought to put more blame on Warner.

Smith was quoted as saying, "I don't want to know about it" when Warner indicated the need to do something with the ball and Bancroft said he was encouraged by Warner to tamper with the ball.

"I don't know that it does," Roberts told SEN Radio, according to Cricinfo, when asked whether comments made by Smith and Bancroft and Smith would impact his chances of returning to the national side.

"Our focus is to work with Dave, who I spoke to about three days ago on his integration plan. I think what is really important is that Dave, Steve and Cameron will really need sign to up to the players' mantra that everything they do is really seeking to make Australians proud. Our non-negotiable expectation is that we compete with honour."

Roberts said they are now looking forward instead of dwelling on past.

"The Cape Town incident happened nine months ago, the investigation was conducted, the sanctions were handed down, and our focus now is working towards the reintegration of the players. Our focus is on that reintegration and moving forward as to how we can support all of the players through that period.

"Our focus is on how we proactively look forward and work with the players, rather than be concerned with what has happened in the past."

The timing of Smith and Bancroft's interviews during the Boxing Day Test and the content aired has perhaps not gone well with CA and even former captain Ricky Ponting was critical of the interviews.

"I just don't think he (Bancroft) had to say some of the things he had to say to be honest," Ponting said on Seven.

"I am not too sure how happy the players will be about it, or how happy Cricket Australia will be about it. I was very disappointed about the timing of it."

Ponting said Smith may have hurt his brand by it but is still capable of leading the side again.

"Even the way he presented himself in that interview, he's trying to rebuild his brand and that sort of thing, and I think some of the things he's had to say have actually done more damage to his brand than what had happened before."

"I think he (Smith) will come back into the captaincy. At the end of the day he has owned up to what his leadership failures are. Hopefully, I am like most, I am willing to forgive after he serves his penalty. I think he will come back a much better person and a much better leader after what's happened."

The brother of Australian Test cricketer Usman Khawaja has been charged with trying to influence a witness over a case where he allegedly framed a love rival with a fake terror plot, police said Friday.

Arsalan Khawaja was released on bail in early December after appearing in a Sydney court on charges of forgery and attempting to pervert justice.

He was re-arrested on Thursday "after allegedly attempting to influence a witness" in the counter-terror investigation, a New South Wales state police spokeswoman told AFP.

The 39-year-old was charged with breaching his bail conditions and influencing a witness in judicial procedures.

His bail was formally revoked by a Sydney magistrate Friday and he is expected to remain in custody until the next court hearing in February.

Sri Lankan Mohamed Nizamdeen was arrested in August over a "hit list" written in a notebook, which outlined plans to kill then prime minister Malcolm Turnbull.

But police released Nizamdeen in September and later dropped the charges after investigators could not link the handwriting in the notebook to him.

Investigators have said they believe Arsalan Khawaja set up his university colleague Nizamdeen in relation to a dispute over a woman.

MS Dhoni Monday returned to India's T20 squad for the February series against New Zealand, while young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was dropped from the ODI squad.

Dhoni's return comes as a surprise since he was dropped from the T20s against Australia only last month. The reason cited by the selectors at that time was that they were looking for a second wicketkeeper in the format.

However, justifying the 37-year-old's selection, a BCCI official, on conditions of anonymity, told PTI, "Since there are only eight ODIs (three against Australia and five against New Zealand), selectors want to give MS as much game time as possible (before the World Cup). Three T20Is means 11 international matches through the next one month."

In the ODI squad, the 21-year-old Pant's axing is the only change that the selectors have made to the side that competed against the West Indies in a home series in October-November.

India are currently engaged in a Test series against Australia and will play three ODIs against them starting January 12 in Sydney.

This will be followed by a limited-overs engagement with New Zealand, starting with five ODIs from January 23. The three T20 Internationals against Kiwis are lined up from February 6.

The squads:

India's squad for ODI series against Australia and NZ: Virat Kohli (Capt), Rohit Sharma (VC), KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (WK), Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohammed Shami.

Virat Kohli might have come under sharp criticism from various quarters for his on-field aggressive behaviour but former Australia spinner Brad Hogg Saturday defended the India captain, saying the visiting team derives energy from him.

"Virat Kohli is the energy of this Indian team. He is their clear leader and they feed off him. You just see him on the field - his athleticism is different and he expects that from the Indian team," Hogg told PTI.

"And what he expects from the team, he does as well, so it is not as if he is telling the team what to do without leading from the front. He is actually leading from the front and asking his teammates to follow him," he added.

Talking about Kohli's batting, Hogg said: "As a batsman too, Kohli is on a different level to anyone else. Perhaps only Usman Khawaja came close, that too in the second innings where he batted with a lot of composure," said 47-year-old Hogg who played seven Tests between 1996 to 2008.

"But even then, they don't have someone on the same level as Kohli. He is a different batsman to everybody else - he finds boundaries and rotates strike, and turns momentum of the game at will," he added.

Hogg said India would need to find balance going into the third Test to put Australia under pressure. He said both the teams might look to play a pace-bowling all-round at the MCG.

The four-match Test series is now levelled at 1-1, with India winning in Adelaide and Australia drawing level in Perth.

Hogg said he hopes to see a close contest in the remaining two Tests.

"I only really want a close series. We have had two close Test matches, and that's what we want. We want Australia tested on their home soil and they have been tested a couple of times previously by Indian teams coming here," said the left-arm spinner.

"It will be interesting to see how India will balance their team going into the MCG Test. Both teams might look to play the extra bowler by picking the all-rounder and added to their bowling depth."

Hogg heaped praise on Indian pacers and said it would be a huge opportunity for the visitors against a 'relatively weak' Australian side.

"India have to be proud with the way their pacers have bowled in both Tests. They have been aggressive and won the first Test, and it was very important because it gave them energy and belief," he said.

"This is a huge opportunity for India because of the relative weakness of the Australian team. So that adds pressure and it plays on back of their minds. Perth tested this bowling attack's character and they showed true fight, but didn't score enough runs."

India also faced flak for not playing a spinner at the Perth pitch where Nathan Lyon scalped eight wickets, despite the wicket favouring the pacers.

Hogg backed the decision saying in absence of injured Ravichandran Ashwin, India simply couldn't play Ravindra Jadeja or Kuldeep Yadav for a lack of aid from the pace-friendly pitch.

"See, Ashwin wasn't fit and yes, they did have Jadeja and Kuldeep. I would have loved to see Kuldeep bowl on that track, but even Nathan Lyon didn't get too much turn," he said.

"As for Jadeja, he would have been spinning into a long left-handed Australian line-up so India probably had that point at the back of their mind. I suspect India might have made the right decision but it came down to the first hour on day one," he opined.

Hogg said the Australian openers have made all the difference in the series so far for the home team, surely as compared to their Indian counterparts.

"It was an enthralling Test match and India can be proud of how they fought. But the difference was in the opening partnerships. The way Marcus Harris and Aaron Finch added 112 runs, they made India chase the game from the first hour on day one," he said.

"Indian pacers couldn't figure out line or length for the first two sessions and that's where this game got away from them.

"It happens sometimes in Perth, when opposition teams arrive here. They can get carried away seeing the green grass or bounce, and are not able to adjust lengths. It gave Australia impetus and India never recovered from there," Hogg said.

Australia have retained the same 13-man squad for the remaining two matches in Melbourne and Sydney after beating India in the second Test in Perth, the country's cricket board said on Tuesday.

The hosts beat the world's top-ranked Test side by 146 runs at the Perth Stadium to level the series at 1-1 after the opening loss in Adelaide.

Uncapped paceman Chris Tremain will continue to remain out of the squad after being released before the Perth match, Cricket Australia (CA) said in a statement.

"With Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Peter Siddle in the squad we believe we have enough fast bowlers to choose from, so we've made the decision to stick with the 13 person squad for the remaining two Test matches against India," national selector Trevor Hohns said.

"We believe it's important to keep this group together to build on the momentum we have established in Perth."

Melbourne will host the traditional Boxing Day Test before the final match is played at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3.

The foreign minister of US ally Bahrain has defended Australia's formal recognition of West Jerusalem as Israel's capital, saying the move would not affect a future Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital.

Australia's government announced the decision on Saturday, reversing decades of Middle East policy, but said it would not immediately move its embassy there.

The United States in May opened its embassy in Jerusalem.

The Arab League had issued a statement criticising the Australian decision as "blatantly biased towards the positions and policies of the Israeli occupation".

But Bahraini minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed al-Khalifa described the statement as "mere rhetoric and irresponsible".

"Australia's stance does not impact the legitimate Palestinian demands, first among them being East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, and it does not contradict the Arab Peace Initiative," he tweeted on Saturday.

Sheikh Khalid has previously said Israel had the right to defend itself against Shi'ite Muslim Iran, which Bahrain blames for stoking unrest in the Sunni-ruled island state. Iran denies interfering in Bahrain.

Bahrain foreign minister defends Australia's decision on Jerusalem

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Sunday criticized Australia's move to recognise West Jerusalem as Israel's capital, saying countries had "no rights" to do so.

Australia's move follows US President Donald Trump's decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv in May, which infuriated Palestinians and the wider Islamic world and upset Western allies.

"Jerusalem should remain as it is now and not the capital of Israel," Mahathir told Reuters on the sidelines of an event in Bangkok.

"Jerusalem has always been under Palestine, so why are they taking the initiative to divide Jerusalem not belonging to them, but to divide the Arabs and the Jews? They have no rights," he added.

Malaysia is a majority-Muslim country and has long supported a two-state solution in the Palestine-Israel conflict.

The status of Jerusalem, home to sites holy to the Muslim, Jewish and Christian faiths, is one of the biggest obstacles to a peace agreement between Israel and Palestinians who want East Jerusalem recognised as the capital of a Palestinian state.

Israel regards all of Jerusalem as its capital, including the eastern sector that it annexed in a move not recognised internationally, after the 1967 Middle East war.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison reversed decades of Middle East policy by the country but said there are no immediate plans to move the Australian embassy from Tel Aviv.

Australia battled through an onslaught from India's fiery fast bowlers on the third day of the second Test, building an ominous 175-run lead with six wickets in hand on a menacing Perth Stadium pitch that is expected to deteriorate further.

Kohli had reached his 25th century in style with a flowing off-drive to the boundary and then placed his helmet on the ground, pointed to his bat and made a yapping gesture with his gloved hand.

It was his sixth century in Australia, which matches the tally of the great Sachin Tendulkar, and ended a drought against Australia with just 83 runs in his past seven Test innings against them.

Kohli showed no lasting ill-effects from an earlier injury scare when he was struck on the forearm by a searing Mitchell Starc bouncer and required treatment.

Spinner Nathan Lyon targeted the pitch's expansive rough patches and cleaned up the tail to finish with 5-67.

World no. 4 Netherlands broke Australia's dream of clinching a hat-trick of World Cup titles, beating the two-time defending champions 4-3 in sudden death in a pulsating semi-final of men hockey's showpiece tournament here on Saturday.

The Dutch thus took a sweet revenge of their 1-6 loss to the Kookaburras in the summit clash of the 2014 World Cup at the Hague.

The match went into shoot-out after both Netherlands and Australia were locked 2-2 at the end of regulation 60 minutes.

Glenn Schuurman (9th minute) and Seve van Ass (20th) scored for the Dutch before Tim Howard (45th) converted a penalty corner and Eddie Ockenden (60th) found the equaliser for Australia just 26 seconds from the final hooter.

In the shoot-off, Daniel Beale, Tom Craig and Jake Whetton scored for Australia while Jeroen Hertzberger, Van Ass and Thijs van Dam were on target for the Dutch to take the encounter into sudden death.

But it was not to be Australia's day, as Beale's attempt was saved by Dutch goalkeeper Pirmin Blaak after Hertberger scored to take Netherlands to their second consecutive World Cup final.

The Netherlands will face Olympic silver medallist Belgium in Sunday's summit clash after the Red Lions spanked England 6-0 in the other semi-final earlier in the day.

World no.1 Australia will look for a consolation bronze medal when they take on England in the third-fourth place play-off match on Sunday.

The Netherlands took time to get off the blocks as Australia did all the attacking in the initial few minutes but without much success.

After sitting back initially, the Dutchmen got into the groove slowly and had the first real scoring chance in the fourth minute through a penalty corner but Mink van der Weerden's flick was kept away by Australia goalkeeper Andrew Charter.

The Netherlands kept up the pressure on the Australian defence and minutes later took the lead through Schuurman, who scored from close range after being set up by Jonas de Gues' brilliant run down the right flank.

Three minutes from the end of first quarter, Mirco Pruijser's deflection from Netherlands skipper Billy Bakker's long ball down the middle hit the post.

Three minutes into the second quarter, Australia earned their first penalty corner but wasted it.

Netherlands and Australia traded one more penalty corner each in the next few minutes but both the teams failed to convert the chances.

Van Ass doubled Netherlands' lead after his shot from right corner of the box went into the goal following a deflection from Australian Tim Howard's stick.

Trailing by two goals, the Australians came out with purpose after the change of ends as they attacked in numbers in search of breakthroughs.

The Dutch too matched their rivals stick for stick as the game witnessed an end-to-end battle.

Australia pulled a goal back just at the stroke of third quarter through Howard who scored from a penalty corner after their variation went wrong.

Netherlands goalkeeper Blaak had a wonderful match, inflicting brilliant saves now and then to deny the Australians.

In the 53rd minute, an alert Blaak came up with a wonderful reflex save to keep out Flynn Ogilivie's diving effort and then five minutes later the Dutch keeper made another stunning save to deny Blake Govers from Australia's fourth penalty corner.

But the Australians did not give up hope and fought till their last breath, which resulted in getting the equaliser just 26 seconds from full time through Ockenden and take the match into the shoot-out.

Netherlands beat Australia in thrilling shootout to enter second straight hockey WC final

The Palestinian leadership on Saturday described as "irresponsible" Australia's recognition of west Jerusalem as Israel's capital, saying it violated international law.

The country became one of just a few to follow US President Donald Trump's lead and recognise the contested city as Israel's capital, saying.

Australia said it would open a defence and trade office in the west of the holy city and Prime Minister Scott Morrison also committed to recognising a future state of Palestine with east Jerusalem as its capital.

Both Israelis and Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital.

Most foreign nations avoided moving embassies there to prevent inflaming peace talks on the city's final status -- until Trump unilaterally moved the US embassy there earlier this year.

Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said in a statement that the Australian decision to open a trade office in the city violated a United Nations resolution.

"From the beginning, we've perceived the Australian government's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital as one wherein petty domestic politics steer irresponsible policies that contradict world peace and security," he said in a statement.

"All of Jerusalem remains a final status issue for negotiations, while east Jerusalem, under international law, is an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territory," he added.

Morrison earlier Saturday announced his country's move on Jerusalem.

"Australia now recognises west Jerusalem -- being the seat of the Knesset and many of the institutions of government -- is the capital of Israel," he said in Sydney.

A rare history awaits two-time defending champions Australia as they chase a record hat-trick of titles, taking on the Netherlands in the semi-finals of the men's hockey World Cup at the Kalinga Stadium here on Saturday.

The world number one Australia is second only to four-time champions Pakistan, having won the world title thrice before, which includes back-to-back gold medals in the last two editions of the tournament in 2010 and 2014.

Come Saturday, the Kookaburras will be chasing their third consecutive world crown. But it would be easier said than done as in world no.4 Netherlands a tough contest awaits Australia.

The Dutch, who have won the title thrice before - the last time being in 1998, too would be desperate to break their 20-year-old jinx.

The Netherlands would be high on confidence especially after their hard-fought 2-1 win over home favourites India in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

Going by form and world ranking, it is expected to be an edge of the seat thriller between the two teams, who prefer to play a totally contrasting style of hockey.

While attacking hockey is the backbone of Australia, the Dutch mostly prefer to play waiting for the game with a compact defence and relying more on counters to surprise their opponents.

There is hardly anything to differentiate between the two sides going by recent head-to-head record.

Since 2013, Australia and Netherlands have played each other 11 times with the Kookaburras winning five and losing four while two ended in draws.

After a hard-fought 2-1 win over Ireland in their opener, Australia stepped on the gas and registered convincing wins over England (3-0), China (11-0) and France (3-0).

The Dutch, on the other hand, started with a bang and mauled Malaysia 7-0 before losing 1-4 to Germany.

They defeated Pakistan 5-1 in their last pool match before beating Canada 5-0 in the cross-overs and eking out a close 2-1 win over India in the quarter-finals.

The Australia-Netherlands match has all the makings of a classic. In 2014 at The Hague, Australia came out on top against Netherlands 6-1 in front of home crowd to lift their second consecutive World Cup.

And Saturday's encounter will provide the Dutch an opportunity to avenge their loss four years ago.

But in the last four years since they met in the final of 2014, much has changed.

The likes of Jamie Dwyer, Mark Knowles and Glenn Turner have retired but the Kookaburras have rebuilt brilliantly under coach Colin Batch since the disappointment of Rio Olympics and have returned to the top of the world rankings.

The Dutch, on the other hand, are unquestionably much tougher under Max Caldas now than they were four years ago.

Australia's Daniel Beale too agreed that it would be a tough, exciting battle on Saturday for a place in Sunday's summit clash.

"We are into the crucial stage of the tournament. We got to watch last night's match between Holland and India. So we have learnt a lot from that. We are expecting a very tough match tomorrow," he said.

"We have very proud history. There is no special formula. We work hard, we train hard. We are fiercely competitive. Every tournament we go we go to win."

Beale said what happened four years ago will hardly have any impact in Saturday's must-win game.

"In 2014 Australia had great success in the final but that was a long time ago and this group has changed immensely. So we are looking to create a bit of history," Beale said.

"Holland are a very tough team. They have quality players. Billy (Bakker), (Robert) Kemperman, (Valentin) Verga. We wil do our homework and try to nullify them."

Meanwhile, Olympic silver medallist Belgium too would be looking to create history by making their maiden World Cup final appearance when they take on England in the first semi-final earlier in the day.

Hockey World Cup 2018, Semi-final: Australia vs Netherlands, Belgium vs England

India and Australia will play their second Test match of a four-match series at the brand new in Perth's Optus Stadium, which has a drop-in pitch.

Perth Stadium, which has a sitting capacity of 60,000, has succeeded the WACA as the city's premier venue for internationals.

A drop-in pitch is a pitch that is prepared away from the ground or venue in which it is used, and "dropped" into place for a match to take place.

This allows multi-purpose venues to host other sports and events with more versatility than a dedicated cricket ground would allow.

Pitch's curator Brett Sipthorpe is trying to produce the 'bounciest' pitch he can and that could very well work in India's favour.

Weighing around 30 tons, the depth of a drop-in pitch is 20-cm. It is maintained and prepared in a steel frame.

Not everyone is a drop-in fan. Purists warn such pitches -- which some grounds now favour so they can host multiple sports -- remove the characteristics of different fields that made matches more unpredictable, and therefore exciting.

"With the drop-in pitch, there's more of the sameness about things from city to city, and place to place," Australian cricket historian Bernard Whimpress told AFP.

"Which makes me sort of think, why don't they just forget about the drop-in pitch and put in artificial turf or something."

India vs Australia, 2nd Test: All you need to know about Perth's drop-in pitch

Australia skipper Tim Paine declared himself fit and ready to go for the second Test against India on Thursday, with the hosts naming an unchanged side for the Perth Stadium clash.

Paine suffered a finger injury in the series-opening loss to India in Adelaide but the 34-year-old wicketkeeper confirmed he would line up in an unchanged batting order when the match starts on Friday.

"Yeah, no I'm fine. I've got a few niggles everywhere but I'm not alone there, I don't think, at my age. Finger is fine, yeah," Paine told a news conference.

Paceman Mitchell Starc retains his place in the side despite what was perceived to be a sub-par performance in Adelaide, and will be looking for a strong performance in conditions which are expected to favour his skills at the new Perth Stadium.

"Starcy's been good for us. I thought the criticism he got this week's been pretty unfair to be honest," Paine said of the left-arm quick, who took five for 103 in the first Test.

"Barring two or three overs where he got his radar wrong, I think he's bowled pretty well. We know his best is the best so we're pretty pumped to have him in our team."

Aaron Finch also keeps his place at the top of the order despite mustering only 11 runs in his two innings in the first of four Tests in the series.

"He just needs that one big score at Test level to give him that confidence he has at international level in T20s and ODIs," Paine added.

Australia, still without Steve Smith and David Warner after they were banned for their part in March's ball-tampering scandal, have never lost a Test series at home to India.

India vs Australia, second Test: Tim Paine fit, Aussies unchanged for Perth Test

In a once-dominant team humbled by a cheating scandal and still racked with doubts about its identity, spinner Nathan Lyon has been a reassuring throwback to an age of hard-bitten Australian cricketers who talked the talk and walked the walk.

After India completed a 31-run victory in the series opener on Monday, few of captain Tim Paine's players will report for duty at the Perth second test with enhanced reputations.

Lyon, however, is not one of them as he burnished his stature at Adelaide Oval by anchoring a gritty tail-end push for a final day victory after he had taken eight wickets with the ball.

Australia may have failed in their bid to pull off an unlikely victory, but Lyon ended the match unbeaten on 38 as he ran out of partners at a venue where he wore overalls as a groundsman eight years ago.

A cult hero in Australia, the 31-year-old has been nicknamed the 'GOAT' -- "Greatest of All Time" -- for good reason.

His 326 test wickets is a record for an Australian off-spinner, more than double the 141 taken by Hugh Trumble more than a century ago.

But the man known as "Gazza" to his teammates has become much more than a sum of his statistics and seems to add a new string to his bow every season.

Last year under captain Steve Smith, who is currently serving a suspension for ball-tampering, Lyon became the team's unofficial sledger-in-chief in the lead-up to the Ashes.

He first tore into the 2013-14 England team that were whitewashed 5-0 and spoke of "ending careers" in Joe Root's side on their subsequent tour Down Under in a rant that was denounced widely in British newspapers.

He backed up his words with 21 wickets as Australia thrashed England 4-0 to regain the urn they had relinquished in 2015.

Lyon also marked himself as an elite fielder in the series, with a stunning, one-handed caught-and-bowled effort to dismiss Moeen Ali at Adelaide Oval emerging as the highlight of several brilliant plays.

A year later, Lyon appears to have enhanced his overall repertoire with an improved batting technique.

Against India, Australia were staring down the barrel at 104 for four at stumps on day four, still 219 runs short of their victory target, when Lyon issued a rallying cry.

"We've got a massive sniff here, I believe anyway, in this test match," he told reporters after taking 6-122 to limit India to 307 in their second innings.

He called on his team mates to be "heroes" but nearly became one himself in a mature 47-ball knock that was at odds with the usual tail-end slog-fest.

It was a result of a winter batting sessions with his brother Brendan Lyon, who runs a coaching school for juniors, state radio reported.

Australia head into Friday's test plagued with doubts about its batting and the wayward form of pace spearhead Mitchell Starc.

But with Lyon in the side, they at least have a model for inspiration and grit, qualities sorely needed to turn the four-match series around and deny India a first ever victorious tour Down Under.

IND vs AUS: Australia need more Lyon-hearted performances

Australia cruised into the semi-finals of the ongoing Hockey World Cup for a record 11th consecutive time as they continue to display their on-field brilliance to defeat France in Bhubaneshwar on Wednesday.

Despite a valiant fight, the lowest-ranked side of the tournament lost 3-0 to the World no 1.

Jeremy Hayward (4’), Blake Govers (19’) and Aran Zalewski (37’) scored to put Australia into their semi-final.

The Australians, most often, burst into the French penalty circle from the middle. The French, at times, couldn’t keep up with the pace of the defending champions.

The incessant attacks yielded Australia several penalty corners. Some of them were converted while some were deflected.

France got their sole penalty corner of the first half in the last minute of the second quarter. But captain Victor Charlet’s drag-flick was blocked by an onrushing Trent Mitton.

Hockey World Cup: Australia thump France to reach semi-finals

India skipper Virat Kohli on Monday credited the bowlers for registering a historic win against the Australian side on the fifth and final day of the first Test match at Adelaide Oval on Monday.

Chasing a target of 323 runs, set by India in their second innings, the hosts succumbed for 291 runs with Jasprit Bumrah, R Ashwin and Mohammed Shami take three wickets apiece.

"With 4 bowlers picking up 20 wickets in a test match away from home, especially with the ball that does not offer you so much is something that we can be proud of. Something that we haven't done in the past," Kohli said while addressing a press conference after the game.

By virtue of this win, the Kohli-led side has also become the first Indian team to win the first Test match of the series on Australian soil.

On being asked if he is happy with the way team performed, Kohli said 'yes', but was quick to add that "we need to build on this, we can't be happy with one test match"

The right-handed batsman, who did not perform as was expected from him, seeing his last few innings in India, was all praise for batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, saying 'he is the one who brought the team back in the game.'

Pujara played a memorable knock of 123 runs in the first inning while he continued his form and slammed a crucial 70 runs in his second inning to put India in the driver's seat.

"We were down and out at lunch on day 1. His grit and determination brought us back in it. We always knew that runs on the board would make the home side tentative. Any lead was gold and we got 15. In the second innings again, he and Rahane batted well," Kohli said with a smile on his face.

However, the skipper also asked the lower middle order and lower order to do better in the following games as India lost five wickets for just 25 runs in their 2nd innings.

"I think our lower middle order and lower order could have done better. We could have added another 30-35 runs more which could have taken the game totally beyond Australia. So these are things that we have to think about going to Perth but if someone had told me before the series that I would be 1-0 up as soon we started the series, I would have taken it with both hands."

India, leading by 1-0 now, will next lock horns with Australia on December 14 at the Perth stadium.

IND vs AUS: Can't be happy with one Test match and need to build on Adelaide win, says Kohli

India did not bat smartly in the first innings, reckoned skipper Virat Kohli on Monday, asking his team-mates to show more patience and application to frustrate the Australian bowlers in the remaining Tests of the four-match series.

India, who claimed the opening Test by 31 runs, were 86 for 5 in the first innings before Cheteshwar Pujara's gritty 123 helped the visitors post 250.

"In the first innings, we did not bat smartly in the first session and allowed their bowlers to get back in the game," said Kohli after India bowled out Australia for 291 in their innings to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

"The longer we stay at the crease, they will have to bowl 2nd or 3rd spells and you have more scoring opportunities because when the kookaburra gets softer, you can play shots easier," he said.

"In the second innings we had to take a different approach because there was time in the game, we did not want to score runs too early because if we keep them in the field, they will get frustrated and we will get runs later. That was one thing that we have to keep in mind for the next Test," he said.

In the second innings, Murali Vijay (18) and KL Rahul (44) put on a 63-run opening partnership to give India a good start.

"The way Vijay and Rahul batted in second innings, I think it was overcast and very important phase, they took on the bowlers, especially Rahul. I think those contributions should not be neglected. A 44-run contribution in the context of a 323-run target is massive," he said.

"I think everyone can be proud of how they played this game but given an opportunity, from 40 to get a big 100, that's something every batsman would want to do and that's something that all of us will try and do in the next game. If you have control of the game, drive home the advantage."

India won the opening Test of a series in Australia for the first time in 70 years.

The Indian skipper underlined the importance of this win in the context of the team's overseas cycle, wherein they have played well in South Africa and England, but failed to press on from positions of strength.

"Earlier we used to say that we have played very well but didn't win - we don't even want to think about. We don't want to think about playing well and not winning. Our aim is just to win and if the opportunity is there we will go to win," he said.

"We were totally convinced in our minds that a result is possible - either we will win or the match will be drawn. We didn't even think about defeat. We have to continue that mindset in the next few matches."

Kohli was all praise for man of the match Pujara for his innings and also lauded off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for perfect execution of his skills.

"Look as a captain you obviously want someone to put his hand up and Pujara was outstanding. He was the difference between the two teams for sure," said Kohli.

Ashwin picked up three wickets in each innings after bowling 86.5 overs in the match.

"He was given a specific role. I think he was very economical and bowled in the right areas, just to create enough chances and keep one end tight, because we didn't want to go overboard wanting him to attack too much as that would have opened up scoring options as well," Kohli said about Ashwin.

"He controlled the game nicely and kept us in the game, not letting it drift away too much away at any stage. I think he did his job perfectly, that's a good start for him. He hasn't started that well in Australia before and I think he can build on that."

Ajinkya Rahane also chipped in with a 147-ball 70 in the second innings and Kohli praised on the stylish batsman for his efforts.

"I think Ajinkya batted superbly as well, so fearless and positive and that's his game and that's his template; taking their bowlers on and not being intimidated. He has confidence in his own space, which I think is the most important thing for him," he said.

"And the fact that he could do it in the first game, we have seen him build on it in Australia in the past. If he can bat like that every Test match, I think, he certainly can take away the game from the opposition and set the game in a session. That's how good he is when he is on a roll," he added.

This is how Virat Kohli will frustrate Australia in next Test

India captain Virat Kohli says he was sad to see the public backlash faced by Steve Smith and David Warner for their role in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa earlier this year.

Smith and Warner are currently serving one-year bans after being found of guilty of ball-tampering during the Cape Town Test in March.

"Well, it was sad to see. As big a thing as it became, you never want to see anyone go through that because I have known David and I have known Steve as well," Kohli told former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist in an interview on a popular cricket related channel.

"Apart all the competitiveness on the field and all the battles that you have, you never want to see such a magnitude happen to two sportsmen and what happened after was, I felt, very bad. I felt like that the things happened after shouldn't have happened," he said.

Besides Smith and Warner, Cricket Australia also handed a nine-month ban to Cameron Bancroft for playing his part in the infamous incident that rocked the nation.

Australians players wore black bands while taking the field on day four of the Adelaide Test against India on Sunday.

The players wore black bands to give tribute to Colin Ernest John Guest, the former Australia pacer, who passed away on Saturday, December 8 at the age of 81.

Colin Guest was a former Australian cricketer who played in the Third Test at Sydney in the 1962–63 Ashes series.

A fast-medium bowler, Guest played first-class cricket for Victoria from 1958-59 to 1963-64 and for Western Australia in 1966-67.

Guest, who was cap 222 for Australia, played one Test, against England in Sydney in 1963. He went wicketless then, but was a successful bowler in the first-class level, where he had 115 wickets from 36 matches.

Born in Victoria, he spent most of his career playing for them, before moving to Western Australia in his final season in 1966-67. He went on to coach Western Australia as well.

"Colin made a significant contribution to our domestic game, both as a player and a coach. His patience was rewarded after debuting for Australia in the Ashes in 1963," said Kevin Roberts, Cricket Australia CEO. "Colin was selected after he took his best match figures (7-95 and 10-134) for Victoria against Western Australia in Melbourne and replaced Ken Mackay in the Test side.

"Colin is to be commended for his coaching influence in Western Australia. He had a particular passion and drive for inspiring juniors in the game.

"On behalf of the Board and staff at Cricket Australia, we sincerely acknowledge Colin for his contribution to Australia’s favourite sport. He will be sadly missed, and our thoughts are with his family, friends and all those who crossed paths with him in the cricketing community at this time."

Protecting India's first innings total of 250, Kohli's bowlers did well to carve out an initial 15-run lead, getting through Australia's final three wickets for the cost of 44 runs after the home side resumed on 191 for seven following a rain-delayed start.

India seamer Mohammed Shami was on a hat-trick after claiming the final two wickets of batsman Travis Head (72) and number 11 Josh Hazlewood (0) in successive balls.

Starc was the first wicket to fall, caught behind off seamer Jasprit Bumrah, who finished with 3-47.

Nathan Lyon was left 24 not out, having played a handy cameo with Head.

Dismissed for two in the first innings to extend a lean run of scores, Rahul came out with positive intent and saw off Starc and Hazlewood's opening spell before taking to Pat Cummins.

He smashed a drive for six over deep cover off Australia's first-change bowler and another square drive for four in the same over.

The recalled Vijay was never quite so settled, however, and he was out for 18 chasing a wider delivery that was caught by Peter Handscomb at second slip.

Pujara, who scored a sparkling 123 to rescue India in their first innings total of 250, was given out after an appeal for caught behind off Lyon but over-turned the decision on review.

Australia's disappointment was short-lived, however, as Rahul threw away his wicket moments later with an ill-advised swipe at a Hazlewood which served only to send a nick flying through to wicketkeeper-captain Tim Paine.

INDvsAUS, 1st Test, Day 3: India take stranglehold in Adelaide Test

Australia finished their Pool B campaign with a dominating 11-0 win over a hapless China in the ongoing Men's Hockey World Cup here at Kalinga Stadium on Friday.

Beginning the proceedings early in the first quarter, the Aran Zalewski-led side won a penalty corner in the 10th minute through Jake Harvie, with forward Blake Govers making no mistake to open the scoring for Australia with a superb drag-flick dispatched into the roof of the net.

In the 15th minute, skipper Zalewski doubled the lead.

As Chinese goalkeeper Wang Caiyu saved a Jeremy Hayward drag-flick, Dylan Wotherspoon latched onto the rebound and cut a pass to skipper Zalewski, who completed the goal at the far post.

The goals galore did not stop, as Tom Craig, in the 16th minute, scored Australia's third goal soon after the start of the second quarter. Craig finished the goal from close range after Matt Dawson and Flynn Ogilvie exchanged one-touch passes on the left side. In the 19th minute, Govers scored his second and the fourth goal for Australia.

After having failed to convert from two successive penalty corners, the defending world champions made the third one count in the 22nd minute of the match as Jeremy Hayward placed his shot into the bottom right corner to bring up his side`s fifth goal. In the 29th minute, Jake Whetton added the sixth goal before going into half-time.

Eddie Ockenden and Govers put Whetton through on the goal with just the Chinese goalkeeper to beat, with the forward emphatically finishing his job.

In the 33rd minute, Tim Brand continued the Australian onslaught with the seventh goal for his side, before Govers completed his hattrick in the 34th minute. Hayward pounced on a loose ball just outside the penalty area and passed it to Govers, who smashed it past a helpless Wang Caiyu to bring up his third and Australia's eighth.

Dylan Wotherspoon joined the party in the 38th minute as he hit the ninth goal for the World Champions before ending the third quarter.

A defensive mix-up in the 49th minute resulted in Flynn Oglivie scoring the tenth goal for Australia.

China's first shot on goal finally arrived in the 52nd minute from their first penalty corner of the match, although it was easily saved by Australia's keeper Andrew Charter.

To seal the massive victory, Brand, in the 55th minute, rolled the ball into an empty net to complete the thrashing.

Hockey World Cup 2018: Australia run riot against China 11-0

Travis Head scored an unbeaten half-century on his home debut to give Australia hope of reeling in India's first innings lead at the close of day two of the first test on Friday.

Australia were 191 for seven, with Head 61 not out and tailender Mitchell Starc on eight, still 59 runs short of India's modest total of 250 after another baking hot day at Adelaide Oval.

"It's nice to do a good job for the team," South Australia captain Head said after scoring his second fifty in his third test.

"We're hanging in there, India bowled exceptionally well and put us under pressure.

"Fantastic little fight-back at the end there and sets up a really important first hour in the morning. If we can get close it's game on."

Tim Paine's side resumed on 117 for four after tea, with Peter Handscomb and Head tasked with salvaging the innings after spinner Ravichandran Ashwin tore through the top order with three wickets.

Handscomb promptly threw away his wicket for 34 trying to fend Jasprit Bumrah to third man with an angled bat, a thick edge pouched by Rishabh Pant.

Australia were soon reduced to 127 for six when captain Tim Paine edged a leaden-footed drive behind off Ishant Sharma to be out for five after a tortured 20-ball innings.

The home side looked primed for a collapse but Pat Cummins and Head combined for a rare bout of resistance.

After a grinding afternoon at the crease, Head tried to lift the run-rate against an ageing ball, smashing Mohammed Shami with a couple of fine drives to the fence.

He cut a Murali Vijay delivery through the covers for a single to raise warm applause from the sun-baked crowd.

He and Cummins carved out Australia's first 50-run partnership but their stand was broken as soon as the second new ball was taken.

Cummins declined to play a shot against a searing Bumrah delivery and was given out lbw. He then squandered a review attempting to overturn the decision despite the ball thudding into his rear pad, directly in front.

Starc and Head negotiated the nervous final overs to give Australia hope of mustering enough runs on day three to remain competitive.

India lost their final wicket on the first ball of the morning but Australia's batsmen were equally quick to squander the advantage.

Opener Aaron Finch was bowled for a third-ball duck by Ishant Sharma, while debutant Marcus Harris was caught for 26, with Ashwin breaking a 45-run partnership with Usman Khawaja.

The crafty spinner ratcheted up the pressure with two wickets after lunch, continuing Shaun Marsh's dreadful run of form in tests by enticing the number four to chop on his stumps for two, then captured the key wicket of Khawaja for 28.

The recalled Handscomb made a better fist of partnering Khawaja, but Ashwin returned to break the partnership with a pearl of a delivery that flicked Khawaja's glove on the way through to the keeper.

If we can get close it's game on." Tim Paine's side resumed on 117 for four after tea, with Peter Handscomb and Head tasked with salvaging the innings after spinner Ravichandran Ashwin tore through the top order with three wickets. Handscomb promptly threw away his wicket for 34 trying to fend Jasprit Bumrah to third man with an angled bat, a thick edge pouched by Rishabh Pant. Stumps on Day 2! Australia head back in at 191/7, with Travis Head's 61* keeping them in the fight.#AUSvIND SCORECARD ➡️ https://t.co/sCMk42Mboc pic.twitter.com/HylQSYoLCC — ICC (@ICC) December 7, 2018 × Australia were soon reduced to 127 for six when captain Tim Paine edged a leaden-footed drive behind off Ishant Sharma to be out for five after a tortured 20-ball innings.
