A leading Australian bridal magazine has shut after being ditched by advertisers for refusing to feature same-sex couples, one year after the country changed its marriage laws.

The Christian founders of "White", Luke and Carla Burrell, said they did not feature gay weddings in their magazine as they had "no desire to create a social, political or legal war".

In a farewell blog on Saturday, the couple said they were targeted by activists because of their stance and forced to "pick a side".

As a result, several advertisers withdrew their sponsorship making their publication "no longer economically viable", the pair added.

Australian MPs late last year voted in favour of changing the Marriage Act after decades of inaction amid political wrangling.

The shift followed a contentious nationwide voluntary postal vote in support of legalising same-sex marriage.

Nearly 80 per cent of eligible voters took part in the poll and almost 62 per cent of those who voted chose "yes" on their ballots.

To placate the right wing of the conservative ruling coalition the government then commissioned a report into religious protections.

Parts of the review, which called for faith-based schools to legally be allowed to discriminate against gay students and teachers, were leaked last month.

It sparked a public backlash and led the government to introduce a bill to prevent sexuality-based discrimination in schools.

Coach Ravi Shastri vowed Sunday India will "take no prisoners" in their quest to win a Test series in Australia for the first time, but cautioned against underestimating the struggling home team.

India play four Tests and three one-day internationals from early December, with three Twenty20s before that, starting in Brisbane on Wednesday.

Despite Australia's form nosediving since the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in March resulted in bans for Steve Smith and David Warner, the former spin great doesn't believe they have lost their aura.

"I don't think so," he said. "I always believe no team is weak at home.

"We might have three or four players not playing when a team comes to India but God forbid if anyone says it is a weak Indian team because you will be surprised."

Shastri didn't want to be drawn on Australia's new "friendlier" approach to playing cricket under Justin Langer, which has seen them tone down the confrontational style that brought then so much success.

Faf du Plessis suggests Australian team to avoid confrontation with Virat Kohli

But he has instructed his team to play hard but fair.

"We will be taking no prisoners, but are focusing on our game rather than what is happening outside," he said.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, who has fed off the Australian "in-your-face" attitude in recent years, urged them last week not to totally abandon this aspect of their game.

His Indian counterpart Virat Kohli is another who has thrived previously on the combative rivalry.

Shastri did not believe the hosts' new, polite approach would affect his skipper.

"He won't take his foot off the gas that is for sure," he warned.

"He loves coming to Australia, he's passionate about his game and the pitches here suit his style of play."

While India have maintained home recent supremacy with a thrashing of the West Indies in Tests (2-0), ODIs (3-1) and T20s (3-0), they have not been as dominant away.

They lost 2-1 in Tests to South Africa and were then outplayed in England 4-1.

"It's about seizing the moment. If you look at those Test matches (overseas), the scoreline doesn't really tell you the whole story," said Shastri.

"There were some very tight Test matches and we lost some big moments badly which cost us the series.

"It could have been just an hour in a session over four days which made all the difference -- you have to learn from that."

The United States will join forces with Australia in the development of a new naval base to be built in Papua New Guinea, US Vice President Mike Pence said Saturday.

Australia has announced plans to redevelop PNG's Lombrum Naval Base on Manus island, in what is seen as a move to curb China's influence in the Pacific.

"The United States will partner with Papua New Guinea and Australia on their joint initiative at Lombrum Naval Base," Pence said ahead of a regional summit. "We will work with these two nations to protect sovereignty and maritime rights in the Pacific Islands. "

Menawhile, Pence said on Friday the South China Sea does not belong to any one nation and the United States will continue to sail and fly wherever international law allows, comments sure to rile China which claims the strategic sea route.

The United States has conducted a series of "freedom of navigation" exercises in the contested South China Sea, angering Beijing, which says the moves threaten its sovereignty.

Virat Kohli, famous for losing his cool easily, promised Thursday to not go looking for trouble during the Indian team's upcoming tour to Australia.

The Indian skipper, however, was soon to add the team would not shy away from giving it back.

"When it comes to getting engaged in an argument on the field, I have been completely okay playing without an altercation. I have enough belief in my abilities.. those were very immature things I used to feed on when I was younger," Kohli said at India's pre-departure press conference.

"Now being captain of the team, you do not have time to think of anything else apart from what the team needs."

"We were always the ones giving it back. As long as it does not start, we will not go out looking for anything but we will reciprocate," he added.

However, there has since been a transition in the Australian cricket culture, especially after Steve Smith and David Warner were banned for a year over their roles in the infamous ball-tampering scandal. The Australian team under new Test captain Tim Paine are now expected to play with a smile and be nice boys on the field.

Groups aligned with the Islamic state have warned of further attacks on Australia and other Western nations in online posters featuring the deadly lone wolf stabbing rampage in Melbourne last week.

"Australia, don't think you are away from our attacks," read one poster, which showed a photo of a vehicle the Melbourne attacker set alight during his attack last Friday.

The SITE Intelligence Group which monitors jihadist threats said the graphic was issued Wednesday by the Sunni Shield Media Foundation, which is aligned with the Islamic State.

Another graphic posted online and distributed by SITE showed an image drawn from social media showing the Melbourne attacker, Hassan Khalid Shire Ali, trying to stab a policeman before he was fatally shot.

A text overlay on the image says: "Melbourne today - What is the next city tomorrow??!" Shire Ali stabbed and killed one man during the incident and wounded two others before being killed by police.

Australian police characterised the attack as "terrorism" and said the 30-year-old Somali-born Shire Ali was inspired by the Islamic State, but acted alone and had no known ties to the group.

On the day of the attack, Islamic State (IS) said via its propaganda arm that Shire Ali was an "Islamic State fighter and carried out the operation", but provided no evidence to back its claim.

Conjoined Bhutanese twins successfully separated by a team of Australian surgeons are in a stable condition and recovering together in the same cot after their marathon surgery in Melbourne, officials say.

Fifteen-month-old Nima and Dawa -- whose names mean "Sun" and "Moon" -- and their mother Bhumchu Zangmo, arrived in Australia a month ago with the help of an Australian charity, but doctors had delayed the surgery to ensure the twins were well-enough nourished to survive the operation.

The team of more than 20 doctors and nurses spent six hours operating on the pair, who shared a liver, on Friday and said the following two days would be critical to their recovery.

A spokeswoman of Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital said Saturday both were "in a stable condition" and recovering in a ward.

The twins were placed in separate beds after the procedure, but after waking up, they reached out for each other and a decision was made to put them in the same cot, Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper reported Saturday.

The head of the charity Children First Foundation which raised money to bring the family to Australia said she was thrilled to see the twins so healthy.

"Nima lay on her back which was something she has never been able to do, but she reached out to find her sister... and Dawa has still been wrapping her leg around Nima," CFF chief executive Elizabeth Lodge told the Herald Sun.

"In a moment when they were both unsettled it was each other they reached for. Both of them independently did it.

"Seeing them reaching for each other is just heartwarming. The separation is not the biggest thing, it is just seeing them doing so well."

The hospital is expected to release updates on the twins' conditions over the next few days.

"In a moment when they were both unsettled it was each other they reached for. Both of them independently did it. "Seeing them reaching for each other is just heartwarming. The separation is not the biggest thing, it is just seeing them doing so well." The hospital is expected to release updates on the twins' conditions over the next few days. Bhutan is a poor Himalayan kingdom where doctors did not have the expertise to separate the girls, who were joined from the chest to the waist.

Australian all-rounder John Hastings on Wednesday announced retirement from all forms of cricket due to a lung disease.

Hastings, who had retired from ODI and Test cricket last year, was playing T20 cricket. However, the 33-year-old, who had signed the contract with Sydney Sixers, has now decided to not play the upcoming edition of the Australian T20 league.

"I've gone through an extensive testing process. I suppose the important thing to note is that I'm actually in good health. I've gone through stress tests and bronchoscopes, and angiogram bronchoscopes and all this sort of stuff. It's been quite invasive, and lengthy I guess," Hastings said.

"It's (only) when I bowl. The pressure at the crease, little blood vessels in my lungs burst. That determines that I cough up blood on a regular basis when I'm trying to bowl. It's a really scary thing," he added.

The right-arm medium-fast bowler has 50 wickets to his name from 39 international matches. Batting down the order, the bowling all-rounder has made 369 international runs in 29 ODIs, nine T20Is and one Test match combined.

Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc will not be a part of cash-rich tournament Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019, after he was released by franchise Kolkata via a text message.

Starc, who was picked by Bollywood actor SRK owned team for a whopping Rs 9.4 crore, missed the 2018 edition due to a right leg injury which he sustained during the infamous Test series against South Africa.

"I got a text message two days ago from the owners of Kolkata saying I've been released from my contract," Starc was quoted as saying to a Sports website.

"At the moment I'll be home in April. I obviously didn't go last year with my tibia injury and it was a great opportunity to freshen the body up, let everything heal by itself."

"I guess barring a little niggle in my hammy I've felt pretty good with my body and my strength and the rest of it. That little period of time has really paid off for the body. If I don't play the IPL next year it's a good opportunity to freshen up for a massive six months of cricket in the UK."

Meanwhile, Cricket Australia is expected to limit how much its players will feature in the IPL, with the World Cup a major focus.

Australia captain Aaron Finch won the toss and elected to bowl in the third and final one-day international against South Africa in Hobart on Sunday.

The series is all square with the Proteas winning the opening game by six wickets and Australia snapping their seven-game losing streak to clinch the second in Adelaide by seven runs.

South Africa head into the game seeking their first ODI series win in Australia since 2009, while the home team is desperate to keep the momentum going ahead of the arrival of India for a three-format tour.

There was talk before the game that leg-spinner Adam Zampa could make way for Ashton Agar after he was hit for 57 in his nine overs in Adelaide.

But selectors opted to stick with their winning combination, although Chris Lynn is set to be pushed up the order to open instead of Travis Head.

"It looks like a good wicket. If there's anything there it will be early on," said Finch.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, who criticised his batsmen for not closing out the game in Adelaide, also announced an unchanged line-up.

"It's a must-win game," he said. "There were a few mistakes in the last game and we will try to learn from them and get better."

Australia: Aaron Finch (capt), Travis Head, Shaun Marsh, Chris Lynn, Alex Carey, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood

A woman has been charged after a "complex" investigation into an Australian strawberry scare where needles were found stuck into the fruit, police said Sunday, in a crisis that sparked nationwide panic.

Queensland state authorities offered a large reward and the national government raised jail terms for such crimes after sewing needles were found in plastic boxes of the fruit sold in supermarkets in September.

Since the first case came to light when a man was taken to hospital with stomach pains after consuming strawberries, more than 100 alleged incidents of pins and needles found in fruit, mostly strawberries, were reported in September around the country.

One incident was also reported in neighbouring New Zealand.

Police said a 50-year-old woman was arrested and charged on Sunday with seven counts of contaminating goods "following a complex... and extensive investigation".

"This is a major and unprecedented police investigation with a lot of complexities involved," Detective Superintendent Jon Wacker said in a statement.

"The Queensland Police Service has allocated a significant amount of resources to ensure those responsible are brought to justice."

She faces up to 10 years' imprisonment and is due in a Brisbane court on Monday.

Police did not reveal the reasons and motives behind her alleged involvement.

The sabotage crisis led supermarkets to pull the fruit from the shelves and saw farmers dump tonnes of the unwanted berry. The government raised the maximum prison sentence for fruit tampering from 10 to 15 years.

Queensland Strawberry Growers Association spokeswoman Jennifer Rowling welcomed the news and said the crisis had a "crippling impact" on the state's strawberry growers.

"However, it is disconcerting that the charges relate to only six or seven punnets (plastic boxes) of strawberries, proving that the majority of... incidents were copycats or false reports," she told national broadcaster ABC.

The leader of the opposition in Australia`s most populous state was replaced on Saturday after he resigned over a #MeToo row sparked by alleged inappropriate behaviour.

Former New South Wales (NSW) state Labor party leader Luke Foley resigned on Thursday after being accused of sexually harassing an ABC journalist, four months before a state election he had been in a position to win.

Foley denies the allegations and said he has hired lawyers to sue for defamation over the claims.

NSW Labor deputy leader Michael Daley defeated opposition water spokesman Chris Minns to win the vacant leadership in a caucus meeting on Saturday afternoon.

He promised to build his government on four pillars: investing in schools and hospitals, lowering the cost of living and lowering energy bills.

"We will make Sydney more livable, and stop the unfairness and overdevelopment in the planning system," he told reporters in Sydney.

Daley also said his party would re-task $2.2 billion earmarked by the state`s conservative Liberal government to upgrade sporting stadiums to instead train young people for employment.

Daley will lead NSW Labor to the March 23 election in Australia`s largest state, but despite Foley`s resignation, the scandal is likely to dent Labor`s chance of winning power.

A ReachTel poll in September had Labor and the ruling conservative coalition running neck-and-neck in the state.

The NSW economy accounts for one-third of Australia`s gross domestic product and at $400 billion is larger than the economies of Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines.

One dead in Melbourne stabbing 'incident': Police

Melbourne stabbing incident an act of terror: Police

Australia snapped a seven-game losing streak to beat South Africa by seven runs in the second one-dayer in Adelaide on Friday, keeping the series alive and boosting their battered confidence.

Set 232 to win, the Proteas could only manage 224-9 in their 50 overs, leaving the series tied at 1-1 with the decider in Hobart on Sunday.

The hosts, who were thrashed by six wickets with more than 20 overs to spare in the opening match, dug deep with their bowlers getting them over the line.

Marcus Stoinis was the pick with 3-35 off his 10 overs, including the crucial scalp of David Miller who hit a stubborn 51.

Adelaide has been a happy hunting ground in the past for Australia.

In fact, their last win came at the oval nine months ago against England, before the reigning world champions were knocked for six by the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in March.

Their form slump since had been characterised by batting collapses and they again struggled to compile a big total with some tight South African bowling putting them back in the pavilion for 231.

But with Mitchell Starc returning to new-ball duties after a short-lived experiment with Nathan Coulter-Nile in Perth backfired, the attack did its job.

Starc got a reward in his third over, with Adam Zampa getting under a catch in the deep to end Quinton de Kock's night.

Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks were looking dangerous as they pushed the score to 46, but they needlessly attempted a third run from a clip off the pads to midwicket and Markham was run out.

Six balls later and Hendricks was also in the clubhouse, getting an outside edge off Josh Hazlewood to give Australia hope.

And when Heinrich Klassen fell to Stoinis to leave the Proteas on 68-4 the crowd came alive, sensing the miserable run could be over.

Faf du Plessis and Miller set about building a 74-run partnership before Pat Cummins got a breakthrough with the South African skipper dragging the ball onto his stumps on 47.

Miller dug in as partners fell to grind out a gutsy 51 before he was given out lbw on a review decision and the South African tail failed to wag. Australian skipper Aaron Finch stressed beforehand the need to go back to basics and build partnerships, and he and Travis Head tried to set the tone after being sent into bat.

But Head's aggressiveness cost him and he was trapped him lbw for eight. That brought Shaun Marsh to the crease and he quickly got into his groove. He and Finch knocked up a 50 partnership before Marsh, on 22, got a thick edge off Rabada and de Kock took the catch.

Finch built a composed 41 before he was deceived by a Dwaine Pretorius delivery and chopped the ball onto his wicket.

The explosive Chris Lynn was in Twenty20 mode when he smacked 18 off the first four balls of a Rabada over before he pushed his luck too far on the fifth, mistiming a hook and was caught.

With wickets falling, Alex Carey worked hard to make 47 before becoming Rabada's third victim.

One person was stabbed to death while two others sustained injuries after they were attacked by a man in the centre of the Australian city of Melbourne on Friday, Reuters reported quoting police sources.

Video posted to Twitter and broadcast on television showed a man repeatedly swinging an object at two police officers in the downtown area of the city. One of the officers raises his weapon, a shot is heard and the man falls to the ground clutching his chest.

"Police shot the male in a chest and he is now in critical condition under guard in hospital," Victorian police superintendent David Clayton told reporters.

"Three people have been stabbed, unfortunately, one of them is deceased at the scene," he said.

"There is no known links to terrorism at this stage, we will keep an open mind as to whether there is any link," he was quoted as saying as per AFP report.

Police said they had initially responded to a car on fire. The bomb response unit has been called in and the streets closed to the public.

The street where the car caught fire was the scene in January 2017 of a fatal but not terror-related incident in which a man drove his car at pedestrians at high speed, killing six people and wounding about 30.

A 25-year-old Sri Lankan man who was cleared last month of terror charges in Australia has slammed police for what he said was "immature, unprofessional, irresponsible, embarrassing and biased" behaviour.

Mohamed Kamer Nizamdeen, who was on a student visa in Australia, landed back home in Sri Lanka on Tuesday to a relieved gathering of friends and family.

"This whole saga has clearly ruined my future and I have returned to Sri Lanka to carry on with my life," he told reporters at a news conference in the capital Colombo on Wednesday. He added that he'd been put in solitary confinement for six days, and had been unable to contact his family, except an uncle, for nearly a month.

Nizamdeen was arrested in Sydney in August and charged with preparing a terror offence, police said. On October 19, the NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) released a statement saying charges had been withdrawn because of handwriting "irregularities".

The decision to initially charge Nizamdeen had been based on notebooks found at the University of NSW allegedly detailing plots to attack "a number of locations and individuals", police said at the time.

A staunch US ally, Australia has been on heightened alert from 2015 for attacks by home-grown militants returning from fighting in the Middle East, and its intelligence agencies have stepped up scrutiny. Authorities say Australia's vigilance has helped to foil at least a dozen plots.

Australia captain Aaron Finch said relieving pace spearhead Mitchell Starc of new ball duties in the opening one-day international against South Africa was an attempt to snap his team's horror run of losses, albeit one that had backfired.

Eyebrows were raised when Nathan Coulter-Nile opened the bowling with Josh Hazlewood in Sunday's series-opener in Perth, breaking Starc's three-year streak of opening the bowling in internationals.

The ploy was quickly shelved when Coulter-Nile was hammered for 16 runs in his first over, and South Africa's batsmen easily mowed down the hosts' paltry 152 to win by six wickets.

"We'd planned to go in with Coults (Coulter-Nile) and Josh (Hazlewood) with the new ball," Finch said after Australia lost by six wickets.

"It didn't work out for Coults in the first over today, then we went to Starcy pretty quick.

"It's just a tactical thing to be honest. Sixteen out of 18 losses in a row, 17 out of 19 now, we're looking for something to try, to try some new things, something different.

"If you keep doing the same thing over and over it's the definition of insanity, isn't it?"

The bowlers were hardly to blame for Australia's humiliation in their first match of the home summer, having been set a thankless task to defend 152 by the batsmen at the new Perth stadium.

With former captain Steve Smith and vice captain David Warner still serving ball-tampering bans, Australia were given another harsh reminder of their threadbare batting stocks, with their top six combining for 65 runs.

The loss came less than a week after a scathing cultural review into governing body Cricket Australia which forced chairman David Peever resign amid fierce reaction.

Finch, who replaced Tim Paine as skipper after the wicketkeeper led Australia to a 5-0 whitewash defeat away to England, said confidence was low but said they could turn it around in time for their World Cup defence in England in seven months.

"When guys are not performing as well as they can do, there’s always going to be a bit of doubt," he said.

A huge runaway train laden with iron ore had to be derailed remotely after speeding through the Australian outback for almost an hour.

The 268-wagon train started on its solo journey when the driver got down from his cab to carry out an inspection, and was soon hurtling along at up to 110 kilometres (68 miles) per hour.

Mining giant BHP, which owns the four-locomotive train, decided to derail before it reached the town of Port Hedland near its Western Australia Pilbara site, and flicked the points.

The train crashed off the rails, damaging around 1,500 metres (1,600 yards) of tracks, but hurting no one.

Aerial images published by The West Australian showed a trail of twisted wreckage, with some wagons covered by their loads of iron ore.

BHP said recovering the train and fixing the track -- a key access route for the enormous mining facility -- will take around a week.

However, it said, operations would be maintained and the use of reserves would mean there would be no interruption to supply.

Australia is one of the world's major sources of iron ore.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said it was investigating Monday's incident.

There was no indication of what had caused the train to move without its driver.

BHP's shares were trading 1.21 per cent lower at Aus $33.14 in Sydney Wednesday amid reports in Britain that the Anglo-Australian firm was facing a £5 billion (US $6.5 billion) lawsuit over the deadly Samarco dam failure in Brazil in 2015.

BHP is also facing an Australian class action involving investors pursuing the miner for losses relating to the collapse.

Runaway mining train travels 90 kilometres without driver

Skipper Aaron Finch admits self-doubt is creeping into Australia's batsmen after another woeful display against South Africa, but he insists "the wheel will turn".

The home side slumped to a crushing six-wicket defeat with more than 20 overs to spare in the opening one-dayer in Perth on Sunday, dispelling any hope a corner might have been turned after a grim eight months since the ball-tampering scandal.

They have now crashed to 17 losses in their last 19 ODIs, including an unparalleled seven defeats in a row, with batting failures a feature for much of the year.

"You'd say that guys are probably at times doubting themselves," Finch said.

On Sunday they were reduced to 8-3 and 66-6 before Nathan Coulter-Nile (34) and Alex Carey (33) steered them to 152 all out, again exposing how much they are missing the banned Steve Smith and David Warner.

"When you're 8-3, you probably have to go and play a different style of one-day cricket than what you map out in your head about how you think the game will unfold.

"When guys are not performing as well as they can do, there's always going to be a bit of doubt." Outside of Carey, no one in the Australian top six scored more than 15, with flawed techniques and poor shot selection at fault on a lively Perth Stadium wicket against a world-class attack led by Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada.

With less than seven months until the start of the World Cup, Finch is adamant Australia's luck will change.

'Wheel will turn. "It will turn," he said.

"The way we are training and preparing, the wheel will turn, and it will happen quickly." And he won an ally in Steyn, who came to their defence.

"I don't think they need to be too embarrassed by it," he said. "The conditions were tough. Throw another 30, 40 runs on there and it becomes quite a tricky chase.

"I think we outbowled them. I don't think they bowled as well as they potentially could have. That was the difference." Despite the return of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins from injury, the Australian attack was lacklustre, in contrast to the fiery Proteas.

Finch bizarrely opted to open the bowling with Coulter-Nile instead of Starc alongside Josh Hazlewood. He was smashed for 16 in his first over before being removed.

He said it was an experiment to try to snap their losing streak.

Australia facing 'self-doubt' after latest collapse: Aaron Finch

South Africa hammered a careless Australia by six wickets in the first one-day international in Perth on Sunday, with a Dale Steyn-led pace onslaught exposing their batting frailties.

Set 153 to win, Proteas' openers Quinton de Kock (47) and Reeza Hendricks (44) helped secure victory with 124 balls to spare, leaving Australia with plenty to ponder ahead of the second of the three-game series in Adelaide on Friday.

The hosts came into the clash having lost 16 of their past 18 ODIs and with the reverberations of a ball-tampering scandal this year still hanging over them.

Coach Justin Langer was hoping they could put a smile back on the faces of fans in their first game on home soil since the cheating row boiled over in March.

But without the banned Steve Smith and David Warner, their batsmen were exposed once again in a stadium full of empty seats.

They were bowled out for just 152 in 38.1 overs with Nathan Coulter-Nile (34) and Alex Carey (33) the only ones to offer any resistance. Veteran Steyn took 2-18 off seven overs while Andile Phehlukwayo picked up 3-33 off six overs.

"We didn't play anywhere near our potential," said skipper Aaron Finch.

"We were a bit careless at times in the first innings. We were off the mark slowly.

"If you're defending 152, then nothing can go wrong with the ball. Unfortunately for us, Quinton and Reeza got off to a flier, and there was little we could do from there."

His opposite number Faf Du Plessis praised his team as "exceptional" with the ball and in the field.

"There was some counter-punching at the end, but a good day at the office overall," he said.

"All the bowlers today were great. It's great as a captain to have such X-factor in the bowling attack and they made sure to take advantage of the conditions."

The Proteas won the toss and after opting for a four-pronged pace attack chose to bowl, with Steyn getting two early breakthroughs.

Travis Head got a thick edge to de Kock off the veteran for just one and then D'Arcy Short, in the side for Shaun Marsh who needs minor surgery on an abscess, followed him back to the pavilion for a duck two balls later.

Travis Head got a thick edge to Quinton de Kock off veteran quick Dale Steyn for just one and then D'Arcy Short, in the side for Shaun Marsh who needs minor surgery on an abscess, followed him back to the pavilion for a duck two balls later.

Again the dangerous Steyn did the damage, with Short driving a swinging ball into the hands of skipper Faf du Plessis who held a flying catch at second slip to leave Australia 4-2.

Captain Aaron Finch, who can be explosive when in full flight, totally misjudged the bounce from a Lungi Ngidi delivery and was out lbw soon after for five.

He mistakenly opted not to review with Australia floundering at 8-3 as replays revealed the ball would have gone over the stumps.

The first four of the innings didn't come until the 12th over when Chris Lynn drove a full-toss to the boundary but he couldn't build on the momentum, caught behind for 15 on review after the umpire initially gave him not out.

Another review saw a fuming Glenn Maxwell gone for 11 with Phehlukwayo just getting his fingers under the ball for a catch at mid-on.

Left-hander Carey, in the side as wicketkeeper after Tim Paine was dropped, kept the scoreboard slowly ticking over but he fell attempting to scoop an Imran Tahir ball over the head of de Kock.

Some late fireworks from Coulter-Nile, including a big six, took Australia past 150.

Australia were bowled out for just 152 in 38.1 overs by South Africa in the opening one-day international in Perth on Sunday, with their batsmen collapsing under a pace onslaught.

The independent review, appointed by Cricket Australia (CA), condemned board's faulty culture that led players to cheat in "pursuit of victory".

The review released on Monday by the Sydney-based Ethics Centre, appointed by CA, said that "Australian cricket has lost its balance … and has stumbled badly".

The review concluded, "The detailed report that follows provides evidence of the gaps between what Australian cricket aspires to be and where it stands today."

"Our recommendations are designed to close those gaps – and in doing so, to help Australian cricket (and its cricketers) remain competitive while being grounded within an Australian community that is proud of its success and the manner by which it has been achieved," recommended the panel.

The panel was ordered to file an independent report after the ball-tampering scandal in which three Australian players - Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft - were involved.

Following that shocking incident then-coach, Darren Lehmann quit and Smith, Warner and Bancroft were banned from the game.

The statement said, "Responsibility for that larger picture lies with CA and not just the players held directly responsible for the appalling incident at Newlands."

The independent review by the Sydney-based Ethics Centre accused CA of leaving players without any moral guidance.

"Of all the physical attributes possessed by an elite cricketer, one of the most important is a refined sense of balance. It is balance that allows a bowler to maintain a consistent line and length despite their extraordinary physical exertions."

"It is balance that allows a batsman to dispatch a ball travelling at close to 150kmh with an elegant cover drive."

"And it is balance that allows a fielder to take a catch one handed while their body pitches in another direction."

"Australian cricket has lost its balance … and has stumbled badly."

"The reputation of the game of cricket, as played by men, has been tainted. Women’s cricket remains unaffected."

"Opinion is most divided"

The statement mentioned that there is no consensus amongst stakeholders and the opinions are mostly divided.

"With the exception of CA's own Board and senior executives, the broad consensus amongst stakeholders is that CA does not consistently 'live' its values and principles."

"CA is perceived to say one thing and do another. The most common description of CA is as 'arrogant' and 'controlling'."

"The core complaint is that the organisation does not respect anyone other than its own. Players feel that they are treated as commodities."

"There is a feeling amongst some State and Territory Associations that they are patronised while sponsors believe their value is defined solely in transactional terms."

"The group most critical of CA is the Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA). The ACA's negative assessment of CA is extreme, matched only by the positive assessment offered by the CA Board."

Ball-tampering scandal: Independent review finds 'arrogant' CA also responsible for incident

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison's approval rating has turned negative for the first time since he became the country's leader in August, according to an opinion poll published on Monday.

His drop in popularity follows the Liberals' loss of its one-seat majority in a by-election in the seat of former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, which left the Liberal-National coalition as a minority government.

Despite Morrison's negative rating, the Newspoll found 58 per cent of voters want parliament to run to a full term, with an election due in May 2019.

The government has had a bad two weeks, after announcing a controversial plan to consider moving the Australian embassy in Israel to Jerusalem; mistakenly backing an "it's ok to be white" motion in parliament; and then losing the Wentworth by-election.

The seat was won by independent Kerryn Phelps in a huge swing against the Liberals, who had held the seat for more than a century.

The Newspoll found that the number dissatisfied with Morrison jumped six points to 44 per cent, which gave the prime minister a net negative approval rating for the first time.

Satisfaction with Morrison dropped from 7 on October 15 to -3 on October 28. However, he was still ahead of opposition Labor leader Bill Shorten, who had a satisfaction rating of -13.

Based on the results of the poll, the government would lose 19 seats in an election.

The federal Liberals are considered so tainted that Morrison did not even show up at the party's campaign launch on Sunday for a state election in Victoria, to be held on November 24.

Australia's cricketer David Warner, who is serving a 12-month ban after the ball-tampering scandal, was subjected to "hurtful" sledging while playing in a Sydney grade game for his club Randwick-Petersham on Saturday.

Apparently unhappy Warner walked off mid-innings but later decided to come back and continue the game.

He went on to score 157.

The incident happened when Jason Hughes, brother of ex-Test teammate Phillip Hughes who died in 2014 after being hit by a ball, reportedly called him "a disgrace".

After the incident, Warner told an umpire he was removing himself from the game. The nature of the sledge was not known.

Cricket Australia's website claimed that what started as goading from Hughes soon turned personal and Warner - who has a fierce on-field reputation - decided to leave before it escalated.

Phillip Hughes died on November 25, 2014, when a bouncer bowled by Sean Abbott struck his head. He died from bleeding on the brain.

Warner was fielding in the match when that incident had happened at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

At the inquest, Warner said Hughes had been one of his "closest mates" and he missed him every day.
