A group of armed officers dressed in plain clothes assigned to protect South Africa’s Deputy President Paul Mashatile were seen dragging a man out of his car and stomping on his head until he was motionless. The incident was caught on camera and has since been widely shared online, sparking outrage and drawing attention to the country’s problem with police brutality.&nbsp;

The deputy president’s office on Tuesday (July 4) confirmed that the officers involved were part of the security team protecting Mashatile. A statement by Mashatile’s office said the incident happened in Johannesburg over the weekend and that he “abhors any unnecessary use of force, particularly against unarmed civilians.”

South Africa’s ‘blue light brigade’

According to reports, officers involved in the beating belonged to South Africa’s infamous “blue light brigade” which has a reputation for using unnecessary force.&nbsp;

The unit’s officers have also previously been criticised for driving down highways at high speed and using force against drivers who do not immediately recognise the small blue lights and sirens of their vehicles and move out of the way, reported the Associated Press.

The officers of this unit are also tasked with protecting South African politicians and other VIPs.

The investigation so far

Amid public outcry over the incident, IPID which deals with cases of misconduct by police launched an investigation into the alleged assault of the driver of the car and passengers by the officers.&nbsp;

In an update, on Tuesday, the South African Police Service (SAPS) said that they have successfully traced the victims of this incident and will take their statements as a part of the probe.&nbsp;

“The police officers involved have also been identified and will be subjected to internal processes,” said the national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.&nbsp;

This comes after the South African police had said that it “distances itself from the conduct and behaviour depicted in the video” as it does not align with its values and code of conduct.&nbsp;

“Members of the SAPS are meant to uphold and protect the fundamental rights of every person and exercise the powers conferred upon them in a responsible and controlled manner,” said South Africa’s national police commissioner, General Fannie Masemola.&nbsp;

He added, “Such action cannot be condoned regardless of the circumstance.”

Indian opener Prithvi Shaw found himself in a huge controversy when he had an unforgettable experience with a group of fans, who forced him for more selfies and later attacked him, and his friend,&nbsp;on the streets of Mumbai. Following this, the woman accused -- a social media influencer named Sapna Gill -- along with three others&nbsp;has been sent&nbsp;to judicial custody on Monday (February 20). The two-week&nbsp;judicial custody will commence on Monday following the wrap of the police custody. It is to be noted that Sapna was one of eight&nbsp;people arrested by Oshiwara Police&nbsp;in Mumbai under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (143, 148, 149, 384, 437, 504, 506).

Sapna and seven others&nbsp;were booked by the Oshiwara Police following a complaint by Prithvi Shaw's friend Ashish Surendra Yadav.&nbsp;Ashish made shocking claims that the group of people attacked his car with baseball bats and even&nbsp;threatened false cases if a sum of INR 50,000 was not given to them. The video of the incident created a huge stir on social media platforms and went viral in a flash.&nbsp;

It all started when Shaw had gone out for a dinner outing in a five-star hotel in Santacruz on February 15. Just then, he met a group of fans who&nbsp;insisted on a selfie. At first, Shaw obliged two people with selfies, but the same group returned and asked for more pictures with the star cricketer. This time around, Shaw didn't entertain their requests and asked them to leave him alone. When the fans didn't listen, Shaw's friend called the manager of the hotel and reported the matter, according to the complaint. The complaint further revealed that the group of fans were asked to leave. They, however,&nbsp;waited outside and attacked Shaw and his friend.

Shaw was part of India's home T20Is versus New Zealand. However, he didn't feature in the playing XI. He will next be seen in IPL 2023 for the Delhi Capitals (DC).

Tennis star&nbsp;Nick&nbsp;Kyrgios&nbsp;on Friday pleaded guilty to assaulting a former girlfriend, but avoided a conviction for what the magistrate called a "single act of stupidity". The Canberra magistrate dismissed the assault charge against the 27-year-old Australian player. Appearing in a Canberra court, the Wimbledon finalist admitted assaulting then-girlfriend Chiara Passari on January 10, 2021, by pushing her to the ground after a heated argument.

Passari lodged a complaint with police 10 months later, after they had broken up, lawyers told the court. In a statement read to the court, Passari said she had been severely traumatised by the incident, experiencing severe weight loss, staying in bed day and night -- unable to sleep or form new romantic relationships.&nbsp; Lawyers for&nbsp;Kyrgios&nbsp;had appealed to have the charge, one count of common assault, dismissed on mental health grounds, arguing it was an isolated incident and out of character.

Psychologist Sam Borenstein told the court&nbsp;Kyrgios&nbsp;suffered from recurring major depression, which included black periods, thoughts of self harm, insomnia, agitation and feelings of guilt. Borenstein said the tennis star had relied on alcohol and drugs as a means of coping, but was now making progress in dealing with the issues.

"As we speak now his mental health has improved significantly," Borenstein said. Magistrate Beth Campbell heard that appeal but ultimately dismissed the charge. Campbell said&nbsp;Kyrgios&nbsp;acted poorly but the offence was not planned or premeditated and was a "single act of stupidity" by a young man attempting to extricate himself from a tense situation.&nbsp;

Kyrgios&nbsp;was said to have shoved Passari, who was preventing him from leaving her Canberra apartment. "I do not record a conviction against your name, I do not find any necessity to place you on a good behaviour bond," Campbell said.

Tennis star Nick Kyrgios on Friday pleaded guilty to assaulting a former girlfriend, but avoided a conviction for what the magistrate called a "single act of stupidity". In a statement read to the court, Passari said she had been severely traumatised by the incident, experiencing severe weight loss, staying in bed day and night -- unable to sleep or form new romantic relationships. Lawyers for Kyrgios had appealed to have the charge, one count of common assault, dismissed on mental health grounds, arguing it was an isolated incident and out of character. Psychologist Sam Borenstein told the court Kyrgios suffered from recurring major depression, which included black periods, thoughts of self harm, insomnia, agitation and feelings of guilt. Borenstein said the tennis star had relied on alcohol and drugs as a means of coping, but was now making progress in dealing with the issues. "As we speak now his mental health has improved significantly," Borenstein said. Magistrate Beth Campbell heard that appeal but ultimately dismissed the charge. Campbell said Kyrgios acted poorly but the offence was not planned or premeditated and was a "single act of stupidity" by a young man attempting to extricate himself from a tense situation. Kyrgios was said to have shoved Passari, who was preventing him from leaving her Canberra apartment. "I do not record a conviction against your name, I do not find any necessity to place you on a good behaviour bond," Campbell said. Husband of Nancy Pelosi, the top Democratic Party member who is also Speaker of US House of Representatives, was assaulted by an intruder who broke into their house in San Francisco. The attack, which took place on Friday (October 28) left him in need of hospital treatment.

"Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi," the spokesman of Democratic leader&nbsp;Nancy Pelosi's office, Drew Hammill, said in a statement.

"The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation. Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery."

It was not immediately clear if the attack on Mr Pelosi was politically motivated. Nancy Pelosi was not in San Francisco when the attack occurred.

The attack caps a tumultuous year for her 82-year-old venture capitalist husband, who was convicted of drunk driving after an accident in May and sentenced to five days in jail.

Top US Democrat Nancy Pelosi's husband attacked with hammer at home

British prosecutors said on Saturday (October 15) Manchester United soccer player Mason Greenwood had been charged with attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

The 21-year-old was arrested in January after social media images and videos were posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.

"The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm," prosecutor Janet Potter said in a statement.

"All three counts relate to the same complainant."

Greenwood, who has been suspended by his club pending the investigation, is due to appear at Greater Manchester magistrates’ court on Monday (October 17).

Neither Greenwood nor his representatives have commented at any stage on the allegations against him.

"The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has a right to a fair trial," Potter said.

British prosecutors said on Saturday (October 15) Manchester United soccer player Mason Greenwood had been charged with attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

"All three counts relate to the same complainant." Greenwood, who has been suspended by his club pending the investigation, is due to appear at Greater Manchester magistrates’ court on Monday (October 17). Neither Greenwood nor his representatives have commented at any stage on the allegations against him. "The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has a right to a fair trial," Potter said. Manchester United's Mason Greenwood charged with attempted rape, assault

Top Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel pleaded guilty Monday to common assault after being arrested over an altercation with two teenage girls at a Sydney hotel, a court official said. The 27-year-old was detained on the eve of Sunday's elite road race at the world championships in Wollongong, where he was among the favourites.

Van der Poel, who&nbsp;has won a stage on the Tour de France, was due in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday but&nbsp;pleaded guilty on Monday and was fined Aus$1,500 (US$1,000), according to a court statement provided by an official. He is reportedly on his way home to the Netherlands, with his lawyer Michael Rowe saying his passport had been returned and he was free to depart Australia. "I'm sure he's keen to leave the country after this," he added.

Police alleged that the cyclist had an altercation with two girls aged 13 and 14 on&nbsp; Saturday evening and pushed them "with one falling to the ground and the other being pushed into a wall causing a minor graze to her elbow". Van der Poel was charged with two counts of common assault. The court statement said he was fined Aus$1,000 for one charge and Aus$500 for the other.&nbsp; "It's a sad result because I think obviously he was very frustrated with teenagers knocking on his door causing him to not be able to get to sleep," Rowe told Dutch broadcaster NOS outside the court.

"He's gone out to speak to them, they've knocked on his door a number of times... it was very plausible how it all happened and it's very disappointing that he's been convicted of this offence." Rowe said he planned to appeal with Van der Poel having "a great reputation".

"He's flown all the way to Australia, it's a massive event, only those who understand&nbsp;cycling&nbsp;realise how big this event is," he added. "He felt like he let his country down, he felt like he let his team down. It's a long way to come to have circumstances like this. He'll learn by the experience."

Van der Poel started the 266.9 kilometre (165.4 mile) race around the coastal city of Wollongong, south of Sydney, but retired in the early stages. Christoph Roodhooft, a director of his Team Alpecin-Deceuninck, said Van der Poel was shattered by the experience. "He didn't sleep all night and was mentally a bit broken as well," he told reporters on Sunday. "He was expecting a lot of this day (race) and did all he could in the last two months after his bad Tour de France. He had found joy and happiness again in&nbsp;cycling&nbsp;and was hoping to have a nice race."&nbsp;

In his absence, Belgium ace Remco Evenepoel stormed to victory with a spectacular solo ride, finishing 2min 21sec ahead of Frenchman Christophe Laporte after the 6hrs 16min endurance test to claim the rainbow jersey. Van der Poel has enjoyed a strong season with wins at Dwars Door Vlaanderen and the Tour of Flanders, third at Milan-San Remo, fourth at Amstel Gold Race and ninth at Paris-Roubaix.

Steve Martin, a Metropolitan police officer has been found guilty of punching a teenager black child and sacked. Reportedly, Martin, in February last year, whilst serving in the firearms command had punched and verbally assaulted a 15-year-old kid who was not resisting the arrest in an alleged knifepoint robbery case.&nbsp;

“Following our independent investigation, we found a case to answer on the basis that the force used appeared to exceed what was required in the circumstances as the boy had given himself up and was not resisting,” stated Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in its investigation.&nbsp;

Reportedly, IOPC submitted ample evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, including the body-cam footage which exposed the police constable for breaching professional standards for use of force and authority. Afterwards, he was charged with common assault and pleaded guilty at the Magistrates' Cort in Westminster, earlier this year in January.&nbsp;

As for the incident, on February 28, 2021, the Police were looking for three youths in East London in connection to a knifepoint robbery case. The black kid along with two other male teenagers was arrested by Martin and charged, only for the case to be discontinued later&nbsp;.&nbsp;

Bangladesh will ban questions probing the "immoral character" of&nbsp;rape&nbsp;victims in criminal&nbsp;cases, authorities said Tuesday, after a long campaign by rights groups against humiliating interrogations of traumatised survivors.

Experts say the country's Evidence Act, a 19th-century relic of the British colonial era, has been routinely used to discredit the testimony of victims during court cross-examinations and police investigations.

Women activists have spent more than a decade demanding the law be amended and last year a coalition of rights groups petitioned Bangladesh's top court for its repeal.

Justice Minister Anisul Huq told AFP that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's cabinet resolved to remove the character evidence provisions from the law.

He said the law currently allows those accused of&nbsp;rape&nbsp;to "ask questions as to the immoral character of the victim" but this would be banned, with parliament expected to formalise the decision by June.

"This is another step towards empowerment of women," he said.

The Boy Scouts of America won pivotal support from a committee representing sexual abuse victims for a $2.7 billion settlement of their claims against the youth organization as it seeks to emerge from bankruptcy, according to a court filing.

Ahead of a Feb. 22 hearing before a U.S. bankruptcy judge, the official committee representing victims in Boy Scouts' Chapter 11 case has agreed to drop its long-standing objections to the settlement, the filing showed. The Boy Scouts, founded in 1910, previously has apologized for the abuse and committed itself to equitably compensate people who were abused as children.

More than 82,000 abuse claims have been filed against the Boy Scouts, which has called the deal the largest sexual abuse settlement in history.

The Irving, Texas-headquartered nonprofit organization, which had earlier secured separate backing from tens of thousands of abuse victims, will still need to get the approval of U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Laurie Selber Silverstein to sign off on the settlement.

In a vote tally announced in January, 73.57% of claimants supported the settlement plan, short of the 75% threshold the organization had been seeking. BSA has been in mediation with holdouts in recent weeks, working to bring in more support.

Under the deal, the Boy Scouts would establish a $2.7 billion trust to compensate men who have said they were sexually abused as children by troop leaders. In 2020, the Boy Scouts filed for Chapter 11 protection - allowing for reorganization under U.S. bankruptcy laws - in Delaware to resolve decades of abuse allegations.

Flood of lawsuits

While the assent of two-thirds of creditors is all that is typically required for a Chapter 11 plan, judges often look for "overwhelming" creditor support in large, complex Chapter 11 cases before signing off on them.

The money for the trust is coming from the Boy Scouts, local councils, insurers and organizations that have chartered Scouting units and activities, including churches.

The Boy Scouts filed for bankruptcy in 2020 after being hit by a flood of sexual abuse lawsuits when several U.S. states passed laws letting accusers sue over allegations dating back several decades. Those claimants are now creditors of the organization, so they must sign off on any plans to restructure and exit bankruptcy.

Groups representing survivors have disagreed over whether the settlement total is large enough. Some victims and plaintiffs' attorneys have said that the average payout per person under the deal would be far lower than other sex abuse cases, like that of USA Gymnastics.

The amount of money each of the survivors would receive depends on the severity of the alleged abuse, as well as when and where it occurred, among other factors. They could receive as little as $3,500 or up to $2.7 million for the most severe cases, according to court papers.

Survivors have sent Silverstein thousands of letters, many of which include stories of abuse or frustration with the settlement offer.

A group called the Coalition of Abused Scouts for Justice has been a longtime proponent of the plan, while the official committee had maintained that it offered too little, considering the large number of surviving victims who would be sharing the settlement sum.

A group called the Coalition of Abused Scouts for Justice has been a longtime proponent of the plan, while the official committee had maintained that it offered too little, considering the large number of surviving victims who would be sharing the settlement sum.

In 2020, hate crimes in the United States rose to the highest level in more than a decade, largely driven by a spike in assaults against people of Asian and African heritage, an FBI report has stated.

According to the annual report released on Monday, more than 15,000 law enforcement agencies across the country identified 7,759 hate crimes in 2020, a 6 per cent rise than 2019—the highest tally since 2008.

In a year that saw huge Black Lives Matter protests highlighting problems of racism in the country, reports of hate crimes against Black Americans rose 40 per cent, from 1,972 in the year 2019 to 2,755 in the year 2020, the data showed.

Meanwhile, attacks against Asian Americans surged 70 per cent with 274 incidents in 2020 against 161 in 2019—a trend that has been linked to the rhetoric that blames Asian people for the spread of Covid-19.

Of the 7,426 hate crime offences classified as crimes against people, as opposed to crimes against property, 53.4 per cent were for intimidation, 27.6 per cent were for simple assault and 18.1 per cent were for aggravated assault. Twenty-two murders and 19 rapes were reported as hate crimes.

Thousands of women gathered in major cities across Australia on Monday to take part in rallies calling for gender equality and justice for victims of sexual assault.

The March 4 Justice rallies have been spurred by a recent wave of allegations of sexual assault, discrimination and misconduct in some of Australia`s highest political offices.

Organisers expect around 85,000 women to join the marches, including one in the capital of Canberra where two petitions demanding action will be delivered to parliament.

A delegation of organisers rejected an invitation to meet with Prime Minister Scott Morrison in private.

"We`ve come to his front garden," Janine Hendry, one of the organisers, told Reuters outside Parliament House. "We are 200 metres from his office and it`s not appropriate for us to meet behind closed doors especially when we are talking about sexual assault which does happen behind closed doors."

A spokesman for Morrison said there was a standing offer for a private meeting and declined to comment further.

Recently reported scandals include rape allegations against Attorney-General Christian Porter, who has strongly denied the alleged 1988 assault, saying it simply did not happen.

The public anger over the government`s handling of alleged incidents of sexual assault mirrors the sentiment on display in London over the weekend, where protests were held following the killing of 33-year-old Sarah Everard, who disappeared while walking home at night-time.

Among protesters gathered in Canberra, one held a sign reading: "Shatter the silence. Stop the violence."

The allegations involving people in Morrison`s government are expected to dominate parliamentary proceedings over the next two weeks.

Both Porter and Defence Minister Linda Reynolds - who has been criticised for failing to report an alleged rape of one of her former staff members by another - are both on sick leave.

FBI Director Chris Wray will testify to the US Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday about the investigation of the deadly attack on the Capitol by Donald Trump's supporters and the bureau's efforts to stop right-wing extremist violence.&nbsp;

The hearing will mark Wray's first testimony before Congress since the January 6 attack, a failed bid to block Congress from certifying President Joe Biden's election victory in November.&nbsp;

The Justice Department has charged more than 250 people on criminal counts, ranging from conspiracy to attacking police and obstructing Congress. The rioting led to five deaths.&nbsp;

At least 18 people associated with the far-right Proud Boys have been charged and nine people tied to the anti-government militia known as the Oath Keepers are facing charges they conspired as far back as November to storm the Capitol to prevent Biden from becoming president.&nbsp;

The FBI has not yet arrested any suspects in the death of Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, or for pipe bombs that were discovered outside the headquarters of both the Republican and Democratic national committees.&nbsp;

The FBI has obtained a video that shows a suspect spraying bear spray on police officers, including Sicknick, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation.&nbsp;

The suspect has not yet been identified by name, and it is still not clear if the bear spray contributed to Sicknick's death.&nbsp;

FBI Director to testify before Congress over Capitol assault

A US woman,&nbsp;Amy Cooper,&nbsp;has been charged&nbsp;for filing false police reports and falsely accusing an African American birdwatcher of assaulting her.

Cooper had accused a birdwatcher in&nbsp;New York’s Central Park and had made two emergency 911 calls that day, it was revealed on Wednesday. The said incident was reportedly videotaped.

However, a&nbsp;Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance called Cooper's complaints and accusations to be a hoax and said it was sheer luck that nobody got injured due to this chaotic incident.

The prosecutors are hoping that Cooper's case can be resolved only by making her participate in an educational program where she can be taught the effect and harms such actions can have over her and the community.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/dont-know-if-her-life-needed-to-be-torn-apart-what-mr-cooper-thinks-of-his-now-famous-racist-encounter-with-a-white-lady-301647">Also read|&nbsp;'Don’t know if her life needed to be torn apart': What Mr Cooper thinks of his now-famous racist encounter with a white lady</a>

The video, also shown in the court, reveals the man asking Cooper to follow the park rules and put her dog on a leash. After which, Cooper started accusing the man of assaulting her. On the 911 call, she was heard saying, "There’s an African American man, I’m in Central Park, he is recording me and threatening myself and my dog. Please send the cops immediately!"

Her actions have been studied as racially and moraly incorrect. “Using the police in a way that was both racially offensive and designed to intimidate is something that can’t be ignored. Therefore we charged her,” said assistant district attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon. He also said he hopes the process of the man getting justice can be "an opportunity for introspection and education" for Cooper.

Vance Jr has said his office "will pursue a resolution of this case which holds Ms Cooper accountable while healing our community, restoring justice, and deterring others from perpetuating this racist practice."

Cooper had accused a birdwatcher in New York’s Central Park and had made two emergency 911 calls that day, it was revealed on Wednesday. The said incident was reportedly videotaped. However, a Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance called Cooper's complaints and accusations to be a hoax and said it was sheer luck that nobody got injured due to this chaotic incident. The prosecutors are hoping that Cooper's case can be resolved only by making her participate in an educational program where she can be taught the effect and harms such actions can have over her and the community. After which, Cooper started accusing the man of assaulting her. On the 911 call, she was heard saying, "There’s an African American man, I’m in Central Park, he is recording me and threatening myself and my dog. Please send the cops immediately!" Her actions have been studied as racially and moraly incorrect.
