Jay Shah, after the BCCI AGM on Tuesday (October 18) in Mumbai, made an explosive claim that India won't be touring to Pakistan for next year's Asia Cup 2023 edition and, hence, the continental tournament will be held at a neutral venue. Since then, the Pakistan cricket fraternity have reacted to Shah's comments, who is also the Asian Cricket Council's (ACC) chief apart from being the BCCI Secretary.

After it was reported that PCB have threatened to boycott the 2023 ODI World Cup, in India, if BCCI doesn't send the Indian team to Pakistan for the continental tournament, their board have finally reacted with a strong statement.

“The PCB has noted with surprise and disappointment of yesterday’s comments made by the ACC President Mr Jay Shah with regards to shifting of next year’s Asia Cup to a neutral venue. The comments were made without any discussion or consultation with the Board of the Asian Cricket Council or the Pakistan Cricket Board (event host) and without any thoughts towards their long-term consequences and implications.

“After having presided over the ACC meeting during which Pakistan was awarded the ACC Asia Cup with an overwhelming support and response from the ACC Board Members, Mr Shah’s statement of shifting of the ACC Asia Cup has clearly been made unilaterally. This is contrary to the philosophy and spirit for which the Asian Cricket Council was formed in September 1983 – a united Asian cricket body to safeguard the interests of the its Members and organise, develop, and promote the game of cricket in Asia," PCB said in a statement.

“The overall impact of such statements have the potential to split the Asian and international cricketing communities, and can impact Pakistan’s visit to India for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and future ICC Events in India in the 2024-2031 cycle.

“The PCB has to date not received any official communication or clarification from the ACC on the statement of the ACC President. As such, the PCB has now requested the Asian Cricket Council to convene an emergency meeting of its Board as soon as practically possible to discuss this important and sensitive matter," the statement further added.

India and Pakistan only lock horns in multi-nation or ICC tournaments, due to strained political relations between both countries, and do not play bilateral series anymore. India and Pakistan met twice in the 2022 Asia Cup -- also held at a neutral venue with eventual winners Sri Lanka reserving the hosting rights -- and will now square off in the T20 World Cup Super 12 clash, at the MCG, Melbourne on October 23 (Sunday).

'It can impact Pakistan’s visit...': PCB issues strong statement after Jay Shah's comments on Asia Cup

After the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s 91st Annual General Meeting (AGM), on Tuesday (October 18) in Mumbai, the board's Secretary Jay Shah -- who is also the Asian Cricket Council's (ACC) chief -- made a big claim that India won't be travelling to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup and revealed that the continental tournament will be played at a neutral venue. Since then, many former cricketers have reacted to the development whereas Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have reportedly threatened to boycott the 2023 ODI World Cup, to be held in India later next year.

"The Asia Cup 2023 will be held at a neutral venue. I am saying this as ACC President. We [India] can't go there [to Pakistan], they can't come here. In the past also, Asia Cup has been played at a neutral venue," Shah had told the media on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, later in the day, a report suggested that the PCB is set to take a harsh step following BCCI's latest decision over the 2023 Asia Cup. "The PCB is now prepared to take hard decisions and play hardball because it is also aware that the ICC and ACC events will have to face commercial liabilities and losses if Pakistan does not play India in these multi-team events," a senior PCB source told PTI. "The PCB is wondering in what capacity has Jay Shah given the statement that the ACC will look to relocate the Asia Cup to UAE out of Pakistan because the hosting rights were awarded by the executive board of the ACC not the President," the source added.

Amid all the tension between PCB and the BCCI, an old video of Ramiz Raja has resurfaced online, where the former Pakistan captain and board's current chief was talking about Indian cricket's dominance in the sport. During an event last year, Ramiz had pointed out that India is financially running PCB and that it will collapse if the neighbouring country stops the funding "The ICC is a politicised body divided between the Asian and Western blocs and 90 per cent of its revenues are generated from India. It is frightening. In a way India's business houses are running Pakistan cricket and if tomorrow the Indian PM decides he will not allow any funding to Pakistan, this cricket board can collapse," he had said.

'Pakistan cricket can collapse without India' - Ramiz Raja's old video resurfaces online amid PCB-BCCI tension

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Jay Shah -- who is also BCCI Secretary -- confirmed on Tuesday (October 18) that the 2023 Asia Cup won't happen in Pakistan as India won't be travelling to the neighbouring country, given the strained political relations between both nations. While the ACC is yet to discuss the matter in detail and decide on the venue, it has been confirmed that the next edition of the continental tournament will once again be held at a neutral place; as was the case for this year's edition.

Following Jay Shah's revelation, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly threatened to pull out of the 2023 ODI World Cup, to be held in India, if India do not travel to Pakistan for the 50-over Asia Cup next year. "The PCB is now prepared to take hard decisions and play hardball because it is also aware that the ICC and ACC events will have to face commercial liabilities and losses if Pakistan does not play India in these multi-team events," a senior PCB source told PTI.

The development came forward on the day when Shah was given another term as the BCCI Secretary whereas 1983 World Cup hero Roger Binny replaced Sourav Ganguly as the board's 36th President.

India and Pakistan haven't play bilateral series with each other since early 2013, when Misbah-ul-Haq-led Men in Green toured India for three ODIs and two T20Is. India's last visit to Pakistan was during the 2008 Asia Cup whereas their last tour of Pakistan was in 2006, when Rahul Dravid was the captain of the national side.

Since then, both sides only meet in multi-nation or ICC events. The strained political relations have led to no bilateral series between the two Asian giants. India won't tour Pakistan for 2023 Asia Cup, tournament to be held at neutral venue: ACC chief Jay Shah

Pakistan are scheduled to host the 2023 Asia Cup, following which the ODI World Cup will be held in India in the latter half of next year. While India have not toured their neighbouring country since 2008 and both sides only meet during multi-nation or ICC events, due to the political tension, it might just be possible that India can make a visit to Pakistan for the next edition of the continental tournament. It is to be noted that the BCCI has dropped a major hint in the note given to state associations prior to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on October 18.

It is to be noted that India's visit to Pakistan will be subject to the clearance of the government at the time but is believed to be in BCCI's plans. As per a report in Cricbuzz, the board officials didn't dwell much in this regard. However, the significant part is that the Indian cricket board's secretary Jay Shah is the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

"It will be subject to the clearance of the Government of India as always," said a BCCI official when asked to comment on the matter. Another alternative can be to take the mega event to the UAE, like it happened this year, but India's visit to Pakistan is certainly on the agenda of the BCCI.

In the 2022 Asia Cup, India and Pakistan met each other twice, with both sides winning a game each. Both the matches had gone down to the wire and were played in front of a jam-packed stadium, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

India's last tour of Pakistan came in 2008, for that year's Asia Cup where MS Dhoni & Co. ended as runners-up. Their last bilateral series came in early 2013 when Misbah-ul-Haq-led Men in Green toured India for three ODIs and two T20Is. Another alternative can be to take the mega event to the UAE, like it happened this year, but India's visit to Pakistan is certainly on the agenda of the BCCI. Since then, both sides have met only during multi-nation or ICC events. At present, Rohit Sharma's India and Babar Azam-led Pakistan are gearing up for the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition, in Australia, where the two heavyweights will come face-to-face in their respective opening fixtures. The match will be held at the MCG, Melbourne on October 23.

India's visit to Pakistan for 2023 Asia Cup, subject to govt clearance, on BCCI's agenda: Report

The 2023 Asia Cup in Pakistan will be a 50-over event with the Asian Cricket Council continuing its tradition of holding the tournament in the same format as that particular year's ICC global event, PCB chairman Ramiz Raja said on Monday.

However, the former Pakistan captain also dropped enough hints that there is very little chance of having a bilateral series against India in near future as a "lot of work still needs to be done" to reach a "comfortable level".

Raja recently attended the ACC meet in Dubai where he discussed the modalities of Asia Cup and also had a meeting with BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah.

"The ACC has agreed and approved that the 2023 event in Pakistan will be a 50-over competition and will be held in September. This aligns very nicely with the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, which will be held in October and November (in India)," Raja told PCB's official website.

While Raja said that the tournament will be held in Pakistan, chances of India visiting the neighbouring nation is next to nil if the current political climate persists, which is going to be the likely case.

In that case one can expect that like 2018, the tournament will be shifted to Dubai.

"We are looking forward to hosting this tournament in Pakistan and I am confident it will be a well-organised event because this is what the fans want.

"The ACC has also confirmed next year's tournament in Sri Lanka will be played on a 20-over format and will be a prelude to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 to be held in Australia from 16 October to 13 November," Raja added.

On his meeting with the BCCI officials, Raja said: "A lot of work needs to be done to revitalise Pakistan-India cricket but there needs to be some comfortable level between the two boards and then we can see how far we can go. So overall, we had a good discussion."

"I met with BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah on the sidelines of the ACC meetings. We need to create a cricketing bond, while I have also believed that politics should stay away from sport as much as possible and this has always been our stance," he reiterated.

Raja understands that ACC as a body has no power to dictate terms to a giant like BCCI and that's the reason he sounded a word of caution for the continental body knowing that their could be a shift of Asia Cup by the time 2023 arrives.

"The ACC was set-up to create a unified approach and collective stance so that we had one voice and if there was a situation, all stood together.

"I would like to see our relationship with other boards and the ACC to be strong so that if there is an issue, like we had with the withdrawal of a couple of sides, a strong and joint statement could come out from the ACC platform.

"My message at the ACC was that we should not forget this philosophy and I am optimistic there will be better outcomes in future," he concluded.

The 2023 Asia Cup will be the 16th edition of the tournament. The 15th edition was originally scheduled to be played last year but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pakistan had the hosting rights for the 15th edition, however, BCCI had expressed its concerns over sending the Indian team to the country and had requested the PCB to shift the tournament to UAE.

However, it remains to be seen if BCCI will give a go-ahead to the Indian team to travel to Pakistan.
