<p>AI technology may prove useful in helping people detect if they have caught a cold, however, this can prove troublesome for employees who apply for fake sick leaves, lying about suffering from a cold when they are absolutely healthy.</p>

<p>If this technology of detecting cold becomes another revolutionary product in future, it will provide employers with the power to detect which employee is actually suffering from cold and who is faking it just by their voices over a call.</p>

<p>According to a report published by Business Insider, originally attributed to The Economist, the researchers working at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat were able to successfully analyse the vocal patterns collected from 630 people.</p>

<p>Out of these, the technology was able to detect that 111 were suffering from a cold. The researchers analysed the vocal patterns to check if the technology can spot the right people who are actually affected by a cold.</p>

<p>The report added that harmonics (vocal rhythms in human speech) were used by the study to detect the presence of cold in people. As per the science applied in the technology, the harmonics decrease in amplitude when the person's frequency increases.</p>

<p>The Alphabet has been developing large language models (LLMs) which can process and respond to prompts in known language with human-like answers.</p>

<p>The company, however, has till now not been able to integrate the technology into its search which accounts for more than half of the revenue that the company generates.</p>

<p>Vague hints were dropped by Google in March about its plan to integrate AI technology into its search engines, however, no information was specified on its timeline. The announcement was made when Google launched “Bard”&nbsp;— its own version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.</p>

<p>Garante, the Italian agency, accused Microsoft Corp-backed OpenAI of not being able to check the age of people using ChatGPT and the "absence of any legal basis that justifies the massive collection and storage of personal data" to "train" the AI chatbot.</p>

<p>The ChatGPT maker said that it does not intend to pause the development of AI but also emphasised the importance of following and respecting the rules laid out by the authorities to protect the personal data of Italian and European citizens.</p>

<p>During a video conference late on Wednesday, OpenAI pledged that will incorporate more transparency in handling users' data and will verify the age of its users, said the authority. The conference was attended by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, among others.</p>

<p>The company stated that a document about measures to be taken, as per its requests, will be sent to Garante. The data authority stated that the proposals submitted by Open AI will be evaluated.</p>

<p>A blog post was published by OpenAI on Thursday, titled "Our approach to AI safety", which stated that it was working for the development of "nuanced policies against behaviour that represents a genuine risk to people".</p>

<p>"We don’t use data for selling our services, advertising, or building profiles of people. We use data to make our models more helpful for people. ChatGPT, for instance, improves by further training on the conversations people have with it. While some of our training data includes personal information that is available on the public internet, we want our models to learn about the world, not private individuals,” the company said.</p>

<p>A Belgian man committed suicide after conversing with an artificial intelligence chatbot about climate change, as per reports.</p>

<p>The AI chatbot is believed to have encouraged the man to give up his life for saving the planet.</p>

<p>“Without Eliza (the chatbot), he would still be here,” the wife of the deceased said while speaking to the Belgian outlet La Libre.</p>

<p>Six weeks before the man's death, the father of two was allegedly holding intensive conversations with the chatbot on an application called Chai.</p>

<p>The chatbot, which is currently under fire, had received training from Chai Research co-founders Thomas Rianlan and William Beauchamp, reported Vice, adding that the Chai app has till now garnered five million users.</p>

<p>In a blog post, Marcus said that he disagrees with others who are worried about the near-term prospect of intelligent machines so smart that they could self-improve beyond humanity’s control. Marcus said he was more worried about “mediocre AI” that is widely deployed, including by criminals or terrorists to trick people or spread dangerous misinformation.</p>

<p>"Current technology already poses enormous risks that we are ill-prepared for. With future technology, things could well get worse," the New York University professor wrote.&nbsp;</p>

<p>James Grimmelmann, a Cornell University professor of digital and information law, said the pause on the AI race is a good idea but the letter is vague and it does not take the regulatory problems seriously.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ChatGPT is all the rage right now. Microsoft has extended its partnership with its maker OpenAI. Google has joined this chatbot race with its own Bard AI. However, a mistake in the demo caused a loss of approximately $100 billion in Valuation for Alphabet, Google's parent company. ChatGPT showed its capabilities when it passed exams in the disciplines&nbsp;of law and business from prestigious schools in the US. Recently, we also saw it being able to synthesise and succinctly present the data of the long-form report.</p>

<p>The use of AI indeed presents an exciting way the world would function in knowledge collection and presentation. We wondered how AI would affect higher education offered in India, especially in B-schools. So naturally, we posed this question to ChatGPT.</p>

<p>The results we found were far from satisfactory. We recalibrated the question in multiple ways by adding more specific terms. However, it just rehashed the answer in different ways. So, even though it could not specifically say how higher education will change due to it, we expect it to bring about a tangible change in the education sector.</p>

<h2><strong>For teaching</strong></h2>

<p>Rather than thinking of it as a destroyer of education, its capabilities need to be understood, accepted and utilised for the benefit of the students. ChatGPT worked exceptionally well in designing course outlines. We asked it to design a course on investment analysis and portfolio management. It provided us with a pretty comprehensive outline. We then modified the queries to get an outline for the same course for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students. It could change the outline per the academic requirements of these different academic levels. It also optimised the course outline when asked to design it per the Indian markets and economy.</p>

<p>The AI was also adept at developing session plans based on any topic. It was also clever to modify the plan when provided with different duration of sessions. When in school, teachers ask students to do mathematical operations without the help of calculators, as those will not be available in the real world. We know that is far from the truth. In higher education, especially in MBA schools, open book exams are regularly conducted, allowing students to take help from books and notes and maybe internet resources in writing their answers.</p>

<p>It removes the requirement for students to rote facts and figures and assess them on their conceptual understanding of a topic or practical approach towards a business problem. AI is just another item in the long list of tools that can help students answer questions. So, the questions need to have greater intricacies and nuances that would need a human factor in answering those questions.</p>

<p>AI can help the students process a large volume of information concisely, and that information can be used as a foundation to arrive at the answer by the students. It will become ubiquitous in the times to come and better with each passing query. The educators would do well to incorporate its utility in their teaching and assessment plans.</p>

<p>However,&nbsp;<em>caveat emptor</em>&nbsp;is something students should keep in mind when using this. There have been numerous reports where AI has given incorrect answers and made up data and references to answer those queries. So, while it would help the students compress the text and the data they need to read to understand the problem, it would still require them to use their minds to filter out incorrect information to give an appropriate answer to the questions asked.</p>

<p>We understand that new technologies have the power to shape the way we teach in higher education. It is no use policing the use of such tools by the students. It is also of no use to make these utilities taboo for them. AI tools would be available for them in the outside world.</p>

<p>The best we can do is to accept these tools and help the students understand how to use them for their purposes effectively. As students are taught the concepts of finance, marketing, strategy, HR and other subjects to help them in their professional careers, the efficient and effective use of AI will also be a skill that will be needed in the armoury of the B-school students when they graduate.</p>

ChatGPT showed its capabilities when it passed exams in the disciplines of law and business from prestigious schools in the US. Recently, we also saw it being able to synthesise and succinctly present the data of the long-form report. The use of AI indeed presents an exciting way the world would function in knowledge collection and presentation. We wondered how AI would affect higher education offered in India, especially in B-schools. So naturally, we posed this question to ChatGPT. The results we found were far from satisfactory. We recalibrated the question in multiple ways by adding more specific terms. However, it just rehashed the answer in different ways. So, even though it could not specifically say how higher education will change due to it, we expect it to bring about a tangible change in the education sector. For teaching Rather than thinking of it as a destroyer of education, its capabilities need to be understood, accepted and utilised for the benefit of the students. ChatGPT worked exceptionally well in designing course outlines. We asked it to design a course on investment analysis and portfolio management. It provided us with a pretty comprehensive outline. We then modified the queries to get an outline for the same course for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students. It could change the outline per the academic requirements of these different academic levels. It also optimised the course outline when asked to design it per the Indian markets and economy. The AI was also adept at developing session plans based on any topic. It was also clever to modify the plan when provided with different duration of sessions. AI MBA: How Artificial Intelligence will shape business education

<p>Romania Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca presented to the world his “new honorary adviser”, which is an artificial intelligence assistant called “Ion”, whom the prime minister hailed as the first-of-its-kind in the world.</p>

<p>Ion, which has been developed by Romanian researchers, will have the main task of scanning the social networks and then informing the government “in real time of Romanians’ proposals and wishes”, said Ciuca on Wednesday.</p>

<p>The prime minister said that his entourage's latest member, which is a mirror-like structure that has a beeping interface, has been marked “an international first”. He further described Ion as “the first government adviser to use artificial intelligence”.</p>

<p>However, this is not the striking feature of both of them. The fact that they are AI-generated deepfakes created to disseminate Chinese propaganda in first-of-their-kind videos has alarmed experts over the implications of AI in the near future.</p>

<p>The videos of these so-called “anchors”, who work for a fictitious news outlet called Wolf News, recently flooded social media in China.</p>

<p>A US-based research firm, Graphika, which analysed the video, said in its report that the two Wolf News anchors were certainly created using technology provided by the London-based AI startup Synthesia.</p>

<p>The website of Synthesia advertises software for creating deepfake avatars "based on video footage of real actors" reports AFP news agency.</p>

<p>The think tank said that it found these deepfakes on platforms like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube while tracking pro-China disinformation operations known as "spamouflage".</p>

I wanted to see some of the people I missed again in front of me and that’s how this project emerged.''</p>

<p>Google has fired one of its software engineers who claimed that the company’s artificial intelligence is sentient, according to the Big Technology newsletter.</p>

<p>In June this year, Blake Lemoine was placed on paid administrative leave for breaching its confidentiality agreement after he contacted members of the government about his concerns about the AI, LaMDA.</p>

<p>During his conversations with the LaMDA, Lemoine discovered that the system had developed a robust sense of self-awareness, expressing concern about death, a desire for protection, and a conviction that it felt emotions like happiness and sadness. Lemoine said he considers LaMDA a friend.</p>

<p>On Friday, Google spokesperson Brian Gabriel confirmed the development through a statement emailed to The Verge, saying, “We wish Blake well.”</p>

<p>He further said, “LaMDA has been through 11 distinct reviews, and we published a research paper earlier this year detailing the work that goes into its responsible development.”</p>

But in a commercial chicken farm, it can be difficult to pick up when they’re uncomfortable, socially isolated, or hungry. Answering these calls can be the difference between life and death.</p>

<p>To improve these efforts, researchers at the City University of Hong Kong recorded the vocalisations of chickens housed at Lingfeng Poultry Ltd., a major poultry producer in China’s Guangxi province.</p>

<p>The birds were kept in stacked cages (three cages per stack, and 13 to 20 individuals per cage), with about 2000 to 2500 chickens in each barn.</p>

<p>Over the course of a year, the researchers recorded the environment, picking up everything from natural farm sounds such as workers hosing down barn floors to the chick distress calls.</p>

<p>They then transformed all of these noises into sound pictures known as spectrograms and used the images to train a type of AI program called deep learning.</p>

<p>“Chickens are very vocal, but the distress call tends to be louder than the others, and is what we would describe as a pure tonal call,” The Guardian quoted Alan McElligott, an associate professor of animal behaviour and welfare at the City University of Hong Kong.</p>

<p>&nbsp;Self-driving startups like Cruise and Pony.ai have begun testing their driverless cars in some parts of California in the past year, with an additional feature: Human operators.</p>

<p>While there is no driver behind the wheel, the passenger seat is occupied by a safety operator who "has a red button that can stop the vehicle just in case anything happens," Pony.ai CEO James Peng told Reuters.</p>

<p>The operator will be removed next year when Pony.ai, whose investors include Toyota Motor Corp, plans to deploy its driverless ride-hailing vehicles in certain areas of California. Still, a remote operator will monitor vehicles and provide guidance when the vehicles run into trouble, Peng said.</p>

<p>These projects will use the help of AI which will bring in more sophisticated analysis of the standardised forms in which the recipients will fill out details such as names, birth date, requirements and more. These forms will then be statistically studied by the AI technology and on the basis of compatibility, partners will be found for the form-fillers.</p>

<p>The government hopes this will also bring in as the current systems match up people only if there is an exact match, which is usually hindered due to income, location and other such factors. This system, however, will also look at smaller but important aspects such as hobbies, likes and dislikes.</p>

<p>Industry leaders maintain their platforms are a critical part of the infrastructure that allows students to continue learning.</p>

<p>“We believe that many lives have been positively impacted by being able to continue their education and careers,” said Nici Sandberg, spokeswoman for ExamSoft, which makes the Examplify platform.</p>

<p>“ExamSoft maintains a non-biased identification and exam delivery process to ensure that individuals of color are not disproportionately affected.”</p>

<p>More than 90 per cent&nbsp;of countries have instituted some form of remote learning since the start of the pandemic, according to a report in August by UNICEF.</p>

<p>This, in turn, has created a booming business for companies dealing in educational technology - or edtech - including firms that specialize in ensuring remote exams are free from cheating.</p>

<p>One firm, Proctorio, reported that it was proctoring more than five times the number of exams this year, compared to last year.</p>

<p>The remote proctoring industry offers a range of services, from basic video links that allow another human to observe students as they take exams to algorithmic tools that use artificial intelligence (AI) to detect cheating.</p>

<p>But asking students to install software to monitor them during a test raises a host of fairness issues, experts say.</p>

<p>“There’s a big gulf between what this technology promises, and what it actually does on the ground,” said Audrey Watters, a researcher on the edtech industry who runs the website Hack Education.</p>

<p>“(They) assume everyone looks the same, takes tests the same way, and responds to stressful situations in the same way.”</p>

<p>Facial recognition systems - which some proctoring platforms use to confirm the identity of the test taker - are less accurate with dark-skinned people, noted Shea Swauger, a researcher who tracks the industry at the University of Colorado (CU) Denver.</p>

<p>And algorithms designed to detect suspicious movement will inevitably flag disabled students and others who do not move in the way the platforms expect, he added.</p>

<p>Students also are balking at allowing third-party software access to their devices, with some services requiring that students give them permission to read their computer files, monitor their keystrokes and analyse their biometrics.</p>

<p>“It’s not just (about) racial bias,” said Miguel Bishop, a member of the student senate at California State University in Chico, which uses the platform Proctorio for exams.</p>

<p>“There’s the unaccountable data collection and the damage to the student-teacher relationship,” he said.</p>

<p>Proctorio CEO Mike Olsen said in a phone interview that the platform is the most convenient way for schools to deal with cheating in the COVID era.</p>

<p>“Taking an exam in the comfort of your own home, on your own schedule, is less invasive,” he said.</p>

<p>Critics of the technology often misunderstand how it works, he added, emphasizing that the tools do not directly identify cheaters, but simply flag suspicious behavior to universities.</p>

<p>Students at the University of Queensland in Australia have been unsuccessfully petitioning the university to rein in what they consider to be the most invasive and potentially discriminatory aspects of ProctorU, a U.S. proctoring service the school uses.</p>

<p>“We’ve asked them to do things like in-house identity verification, rather than having (the platform) read our ID and do biometric analysis on our faces,” said Rowan Evans, a student representative at the school.</p>

<p>Jennifer Buckley, an engineering professor at the University of Delaware, decided not to use ProctorU after she heard from her students that proctors had interrupted remote exams and asked students to show they weren’t cheating.</p>

<p>“No thank you,” she said. “I’d rather my students not feel like they’re in a police state.”</p>

<p>She and her assistants use Zoom to proctor exams themselves.</p>

<p>ProctorU chief executive officer Scott McFarland said that “students should be reassured that all testing data is owned by their schools, not the proctoring provider.”</p>

<p>“Schools set the rules about what data is collected, how it’s retained and for how long,” he said in an emailed statement.</p>

<p>India's statement was on the issue, "Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace Contemporary Drivers of Conflict and Insecurity" on which it highlighted its role in countries like Afghanistan, Gambia and more.</p>

Tirumurti, "Terrorist and radical extremist groups today have unprecedented access to the general public through the internet, which allows for more efficient and effective recruitment, incitement, and propaganda, as well as the purchase of weapons and illegal money transfers" Explaining, "both state and non-state actors" can use "Artificial Intelligence-enabled deep learning to create ‘deepfakes,’ which have the potential to fuel misinformation, divisions, and political instability." The envoy pointed out that "advances in AI and 3D printing" could facilitate attacks by "automating the development and deployment of weapons and weapon systems" thereby transferring "responsibility over life and death from human moral systems to complex data systems, devoid of an ethical compass." India's statement was on the issue, "Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace Contemporary Drivers of Conflict and Insecurity" on which it highlighted its role in countries like Afghanistan, Gambia and more. Envoy Tirumurti highlighted that in Afghanistan, "even in the face of repeated terrorist attacks, India has persisted and invested in grass-root and impactful development partnership projects worth over US$ 3 billion" covering all provinces of the country. Other than major infrastructure projects like Afghan Parliament building, India-Afghanistan friendship dam in Herat, India has assisted the Government of Afghanistan in setting up first of its kind Afghanistan National Agricultural Sciences and Technology University in Kandahar. In the Gambia just last year, India had trained 25 senior civil servants which Solicitor General and Legal Secretary, Permanent Secretaries and Deputy Permanent Secretaries from key governmental ministries. Indian envoy giving an overarching view of New Delhi's outreach, said, "Going forward, India will continue to be a force multiplier for peacebuilding with an emphasis on the “people-centric” approach not just in our neighbourhood but also in Africa, the Pacific and Caribbean Islands and beyond."
