For the first time, artificial intelligence (AI) fully automated the process of discovering a supernova as it searched for, detected, confirmed, classified, and announced the findings without any human intervention. Led by Northwestern University, an international team of scientists has created a cutting-edge AI tool known as the Bright Transient Survey Bot (BTSbot).

<h2>What is the AI tool?</h2>

The university has reported that the new system not only allows automation of the entire search for new supernovae across the night sky but also eliminates human error and dramatically increases speed.&nbsp;

BTSbot is a machine-learning algorithm which has been trained by using over 1.4 million images from nearly 16,000 sources, said the researchers in a statement. Scientists have estimated that in the last six years, humans have spent an estimated 2,200 hours visually inspecting and classifying supernova candidates.&nbsp;

“For the first time ever, a series of robots and AI algorithms has observed, then identified, then communicated with another telescope to finally confirm the discovery of a supernova,” said Northwestern’s Adam Miller, who led the work.

He added, “Ultimately, removing humans from the loop provides more time for the research team to analyze their observations and develop new hypotheses to explain the origin of the cosmic explosions that we observe.”

<h2>How does it work?</h2>

The current process of detecting and analysing supernovae involves humans working hand in hand with robotic systems and though supernovae are bright and energetic events, they are not that common, and certainly not easy to spot.&nbsp;

The traditional method involves relying on robotic telescopes repeatedly taking images of the same sections of the night sky to detect new sources of light after which humans take over. Subsequently, astronomers have to visually inspect large volumes of data.&nbsp;

This time-consuming process is believed to be the reason why astronomers have only discovered a small fraction of all supernovae that occur in the universe.

“Automated software presents a list of candidate explosions to humans, who spend time verifying the candidates and executing spectroscopic observations,” Miller explains.&nbsp;

He added, “We can only definitively know that a candidate is truly a supernova by collecting its spectrum – the source’s dispersed light, which reveals elements present in the explosion.”

BTSbot detected the newly discovered supernova named SN2023tyk in data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), said the researchers, which is a robotic camera in the US state of California which scans the northern sky every two days.&nbsp;

This was also after BTSbot automatically requested the potential supernova’s spectrum from Palomar Observatory – where another robotic telescope, the Spectral Energy Distribution Machine (SEDM) performed an in-depth observation to obtain the source’s spectrum.&nbsp;

The spectrum was then sent to SNIascore – developed by Caltech’s Christoffer Fremling, an astronomer – to determine the supernova’s type. “Adding BTSbot to our workflow will eliminate the need for us to spend time inspecting these candidates,” said Fremling.&nbsp;

“This significantly streamlines large studies of supernovae, helping us better understand the life cycles of stars and the origin of elements supernovae create, like carbon, iron and gold,” said Nabeel Rehemtulla, who co-led the development.&nbsp;

Her face is a deepfake. Her body belongs to a team of similar-sized actors. But she&nbsp;sings, reads the news, and sells luxury clothes on TV as AI humans go mainstream in South Korea.

Meet Zaein, one of South Korea's most active virtual humans, who was created by Pulse9, an artificial intelligence company that is working to bring corporate dreams of the perfect employee to life.

Pulse9 has created digital humans for some of South Korea's largest conglomerates, including Shinsegae, with research indicating the global market for such life-like creations could reach $527 billion by 2030.

In South Korea, AI humans have enrolled as students at universities, interned at major companies, and appear regularly on live television driving sellouts of products from food to luxury handbags.

But Pulse9 says this is only the beginning. They are "working on developing the technology to broaden AI human use", Park Ji-eun, the company's CEO, told AFP.

"Virtual humans are basically capable of carrying out much of what real people do," she said, adding that the current level of AI technology means humans are still needed -- for now.

The demand for AI humans in South Korea was initially driven by the K-pop industry, with the idea of a virtual idol -- not prone to scandals and able to work 24/7 -- proving popular with the country's notoriously hard-driving music agencies.

But now, Pulse9 is "expanding their roles in society to show that these virtual humans aren't just fantasy idols but can coexist with humans as colleagues and friends", Park said.

- K-pop face -

Zaein's face was created by a deep learning analysis -- an AI method that teaches computers to process complex data -- of the faces of K-pop stars over the last two decades.

Doe-eyed with delicate features, fair skin and a willowy figure, she is brought to life by overlaying the deepfake on a human actor.

More than 10 human actors, each with different talents -- from singing, dancing, acting, to reporting -- help animate Zaein, which is what makes this particular AI creation so "special", Park said.

On a Monday morning, AFP met with one of the actors as she was preparing to deliver a report as Zaein on a live morning news programme on South Korean broadcaster SBS.

"I think it can be a good practice for people who want to become celebrities and that's what appealed to me," said the actor, who could not be named due to company policy.

A representative for Pulse9 said the identities of all human actors are concealed and their real faces not shown.

Despite the strict measures to keep their profiles hidden, the actor said playing as a virtual human opened new doors.

"Typically, a lot of people in their teens and young people become K-pop idols and I'm way past that age, but it's nice to be able to take on that challenge," the actor, who is in her 30s, told AFP.

"I'd love to try acting as a man if I can manage my voice well, and maybe a foreigner -- something that I can't become in real life."

- 'Real and fake' -

Creating artificial humans will continue to require real people "until a really strong AI is created in future which will be able to process everything by itself", Park said.

The potential -- and potential perils -- of AI have exploded into the public consciousness in recent months, since ChatGPT burst onto the scene at the end of last year.

Experts around the world, including AI pioneers, have spoken out about its dangers, and several countries are seeking regulation of the powerful but high-risk invention.

But Park is not concerned. Her company is working on new virtual idols, virtual influencers, and virtual sales agents to take over customer-facing tasks for South Korean conglomerates, which are increasingly struggling with recruitment in the low-birthrate country.

South Korea -- and the world -- needs better, clearer regulations on what AI can do, she said, adding that when done properly, the technology can add to "the richness of life".&nbsp;

The trouble however, is that a deepfake can "make it impossible to tell what is real and fake", Kim Myuhng-joo, a professor of information security at Seoul Women's University, told AFP.

"It's an egregious tool when used to harm others or putting people in trouble. That's why it's becoming a problem," he added.

AI is transforming the fashion world but the fast-growing technology will never be a replacement for designers' "original creativity", according to the head of a pioneering project.&nbsp;

Fashion innovator Calvin Wong has developed the Interactive Design Assistant for Fashion (AiDA) -- the world's first designer-led AI system.

It uses image-recognition technology to speed up the time it takes for a design to go from the first sketch to the catwalk.

"Designers have their fabric prints, patterns, colour tones, initial sketches and they upload the images," Wong told AFP.

"Then our AI system can recognise those design elements and come up with more proposals for designers to refine and modify their original design."

Wong said AiDA's particular strength was its ability to present "all the possible combinations" for a designer to consider, something he said was impossible in the current design process.

An exhibition at Hong Kong's M+ Museum in December featured collections by 14 designers developed using the tool.

But Wong stressed it was about "facilitating designers inspiration" not "using AI to take over a designers job, to take over their creativity".

"We must treasure the designer's original creativity," he added.

Wong heads up the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Design (AidLab), a collaboration between Britain's Royal College of Art (RCA) and Hong Kong Polytechnic University where he is a professor in fashion.

- 'Transformational' -

RCA vice chancellor Naren Barfield predicted the impact of AI on the fashion industry would be "transformational".

"The impact is going to be huge from the ideation and conception stage through to prototyping, right the way through to manufacture, distribution and then ultimately recycling," he said.

So-called personalisation is already being used to improve customer experience with better product recommendations and more effective searches, helping shoppers find what they want quickly and easily.

But as the technology evolves so too is the range of highly specialised tools being developed.

AiDA was just one of the AidLab projects being showcased in the British capital ahead of London Fashion Week, which started on Friday.

Others included the Neo Couture project which aims to use advanced technologies to digitally preserve the specialised skills and techniques used by couturiers.

With the UK fashion industry facing a skills shortage, it is creating an AI-assisted training system to help teach couture skills.

Another project aims to increase sustainability to reduce the estimated 92 million tonnes of clothing that ends up in landfill each year.

One potential use of the AI Loupe project is to help designers overcome the problems of using so-called dead stock fabric.

Designers can photograph leftover fabric and then use the tool to get the missing details to assess its suitability for their designs.

"It uses the camera as your index, the material is the QR code that brings the information," said project researcher Chipp Jansen.

- Retain control -

The future of AI in fashion design, however, is not clear-cut.

New York brand Collina Strada's founder Hillary Taymour this week admitted that she and her team used AI image generator Midjourney to create the collection they showed at New York Fashion Week.

Although Taymour only used images of the brand's own past looks to help generate its Spring/Summer 2024 collection, looming legal issues could keep AI-generated clothes off the catwalks for now.

"In terms of fashion designed by AI, I would expect to hear from designers that there are questions of intellectual property rights," said Rebecca Lewin, a senior curator at London's Design Museum.

"Because whatever comes back will have been scraped from published images and to get that regulated will need a lot of work."

The RCA's Barfield said the area would be tricky but he expected it to be resolved through test cases and legislation.

"I don't know how fast (AI) will be transformational but if it gives companies competitive advantage I think they'll invest and take it up quickly," he said.

The only thing currently holding companies back was the "massive investment" in infrastructure required, he said.

"But once they've done that they can take the plunge then they will be making savings on material waste and productivity," he added.&nbsp;

As for designers' fears that it might become a substitute for the human creative process, he said the key was who controlled the decision making.

Using a "genetic algorithm" where you started with one design and used the software to generate successive ones the computer could produce 1,000 varying looks, something that might take weeks to draw, he said.

On the other hand if the designer retained control AI could offer huge benefits by hugely speeding up the process "without necessarily making the decisions for them", he added.

AI 'no substitute' for fashion designers' creativity

Top tech titans in the US met the lawmakers on Wednesday (September 13) at Capitol Hill to discuss artificial intelligence (AI) regulation. Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai, Bill Gates and Sam Altman were among those who attended the forum.&nbsp;

Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic majority leader of the US Senate, invited the tech bigwigs to draw up legislation to better control the technology. Schumer has planned a series of closed-door AI Innovation forums,&nbsp; where the pros and cons of the technology would&nbsp;be debated.&nbsp;

"Today, we begin an enormous and complex and vital undertaking: building a foundation for bipartisan AI policy that Congress can pass," Schumer told the meeting.&nbsp;

Tesla boss Musk, known for his critical views regarding AI, praised Schumer for the forum before stating that a 'referee' was needed to regulate the technology.&nbsp;

"It's important for us to have a referee," Musk told reporters, adding that a regulator would "ensure that companies take actions that are safe and in the interest of the general public".&nbsp;

Earlier this year, Musk and a group of AI experts had called for a six-month pause in the development of AI systems, citing&nbsp;potential risks to society.

The images of a man and a woman were shared on Instagram by an account called IAbuelas by Santiago Barros, the creator. He&nbsp;came up with the idea last year after discovering the Midjourney AI tool, Rest of World reported.&nbsp;

The images were created by splicing photos of the child's parents using Midjourney and then applying the age filter. The end product is a photorealistic portrait of the person in his or her in their current possible look in late forties.&nbsp;

Barros took images from the online archive of Grandmothers for the Plaza de Mayo, an organisation founded by the grandmothers of the kids kidnapped. The grandmothers earlier used to stand outside kindergartens, waiting for their disappeared grandkids.&nbsp;

Clarifying no connection with IAbuelas, the organisation reached out to Barros and published a joint statement saying that it is just an AI art project.&nbsp;

'They are waiting for you'

In a conversation with the Rest of World, Barros said that this is not just important for his family, but for others too. "That's what most important to me- for it to fell like they are looking at you, waiting for you to do something."

The images displayed by IAbeula are not a clear representation of Argentina's ethnic diversity, nor the imperfections that come with age.

"The app tends to show hegemonic portraits," Barros said. "For example, making everyone very thin … I’m working to make the images more diverse, more representative of what Argentines truly are."

Despite the project’s limits, the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo appreciated the spirit behind IAbuelas. It may also use AI portraits for its promotional material.&nbsp;

Barros hopes that his project might do some good amid decades of often fruitless search. He said, "If there’s at least one person that’s inspired by the project and calls the Grandmothers to ask about his or her identity, this will have been all worth it."

Making a scary prediction, a former senior executive at Google said that artificial intelligence-powered sex robots may eliminate the need for human partners.&nbsp;

Google’s research-and-development arm X's former chief business officer Mo Gawdat said that AI will usher in a “redesign of love and relationships” in which people will fail to tell the difference between artificially-created and real-life sexual encounters, reported the New York Post.&nbsp;

Speaking to YouTube host Tom Bilyeu of the “Impact Theory” podcast, Gawdat said that with the use of virtual reality and augmented reality headsets, like Apple’s Vision Pro or Quest 3, soon human beings will be able to simulate sex.&nbsp;

“Just think about all of the illusions that we’re now unable to decipher. But if we can convince you that this sex robot is alive, or that sex experience in a virtual reality headset or an augmented reality headset is alive, it’s real, then there you go," said Gawdat, while speaking to Bilyeu.

Gawdat stated that with the help of technological advances, the human brain will get linked to computer-backed systems and make it believe it is interacting with a peer.

“If we think a few years further and think of Neuralink and other ways of connecting directly to your nervous system, and why would you need another being in the first place?” said Gawdat.

In a first, a ChatGPT-style interface is being developed by the engineers working in NASA which can ultimately make spacecraft talk to their astronauts and help mission controllers hold conversations with artificial intelligence-powered robots, which are exploring moons and distant planets, according to an exclusive report published by The Guardian. 
 
As per the plan, an early incarnation of the AI will soon be deployed on Lunar Gateway, which is NASA's planned extraterrestrial space station and part of the Artemis programme, as per the engineer developing the technology. 
 
“The idea is to get to a point where we have conversational interactions with space vehicles and they [are] also talking back to us on alerts, interesting findings they see in the solar system and beyond,” said Dr Larissa Suzuki, a visiting researcher at NASA, while speaking to The Guardian. “It’s really not like science fiction any more,” she added.

While addressing a meeting being held on next-generation space communication at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in London, Suzuki emphasised interplanetary communications network which will have inbuilt AI to detect, and also fix glitches and inefficiencies as and when they occur. 
 
“It then alerts mission operators that there is a likelihood that package transmissions from space vehicle X will be lost or will fail delivery. We cannot send an engineer up in space whenever a space vehicle goes offline or its software breaks somehow,” she said. 
 
A natural language interface will also be inbuilt in the system which will allow mission control and astronauts to talk to it and will save them from scouring technical manuals for finding relevant information. Suzuki expressed hope that astronauts will in future be able to seek advice on how to perform complex manoeuvres or space experiments.

<h2>How will the new law work?</h2>

The measures, which have been in discussion since 2021, but gained momentum after the emergence of popular AI chatbots like the ChatGPT, would classify the systems based on AI based on the four levels of risk, which range from minimal to unacceptable.

The law is aimed at protecting people from social scoring systems that can judge them based on their appearance or their behaviour, and applications which can engage in vulnerable people's subliminal manipulation.&nbsp;

The officials are also considering the predictive policing tools, that use data to forecast potential perpetrators of crimes in future, as a no-go, while the ban on remote facial recognition and biometric identification in public has been widened by the lawmakers.&nbsp;

<h2>What will happen to ChatGPT?</h2>

The majority of systems, based on AI, which has already become a part of the everyday lives of people, including video games, spam filters or text generators such as ChatGTP, &nbsp;have been kept in the low- or no-risk category.

"We don't want mass surveillance, we don't want social scoring, we don't want predictive policing in the European Union, full stop. That's what China does, not us," said Dragos Tudorache, a Romanian member of the European Parliament who is co-leading its work on the AI Act.

Companies found violating the laws will have to pay fines of up to €30 million ($33 million) or 6 per cent of their annual global revenue, which can go up to billions in the case of tech giants like Google and Microsoft.

The 27 member states of the EU will enforce the rules, which lawmakers believe will be seen as a constructive framework by the powerful AI developers within which they can further develop the technology. 
 
Generative AI developers will be required to submit their systems for review before releasing them commercially.

"We as a union are doing something that I think is truly historic, which is to bring about rules and guardrails for the evolution of a technology that has a lot of potential for good in our economies," lawmaker Tudorache said while speaking to DW.&nbsp;

"At the same time, we see more and more risks. What we're doing with this legislation is to try and curtail these risks, mitigate them and put very clear rules in place that will ensure transparency and trust," he added.

<h2>What will be the next steps?</h2>

The new AI laws of the EU still need final approval from national parliamentarians and member states, which is not likely to happen till 2025.&nbsp;

"It's true that these laws will not come into effect by the elections next year, but we have other rules that are already in place. But if we craft this legislation right, if we articulate the obligations and the rights in these regulations the right way, they will stand the test of time. We are not regulating the technology itself, we are regulating the use of technology – and that transparency is the same and it's going to be the same now or in five years' time," said Tudorache.

The voice on the phone seemed frighteningly real – an American mother heard her daughter sobbing before a man took over and demanded a ransom. But the girl was an AI clone and the abduction was fake.

The biggest peril of Artificial Intelligence, experts say, is its ability to demolish the boundaries between reality and fiction, handing cybercriminals a cheap and effective technology to propagate disinformation.

In a new breed of scams that has rattled US authorities, fraudsters are using strikingly convincing AI voice cloning tools – widely available online – to steal from people by impersonating family members.

"Help me, mom, please help me," Jennifer DeStefano, an Arizona-based mother, heard a voice saying on the other end of the line.

DeStefano was "100 per cent" convinced it was her 15-year-old daughter in deep distress while away on a skiing trip.

"It was never a question of who is this? It was completely her voice... it was the way she would have cried," DeStefano told a local television station in April.

"I never doubted for one second it was her."

The scammer who took over the call, which came from a number unfamiliar to DeStefano, demanded up to $1 million.&nbsp;

The AI-powered ruse was over within minutes when DeStefano established contact with her daughter. But the terrifying case, now under police investigation, underscored the potential for cybercriminals to misuse AI clones.

<h2>Grandparent scam</h2>

"AI voice cloning, now almost indistinguishable from human speech, allows threat actors like scammers to extract information and funds from victims more effectively," Wasim Khaled, chief executive of Blackbird.AI, told AFP.

A simple internet search yields a wide array of apps, many available for free, to create AI voices with a small sample -- sometimes only a few seconds -- of a person's real voice that can be easily stolen from content posted online.

"With a small audio sample, an AI voice clone can be used to leave voicemails and voice texts. It can even be used as a live voice changer on phone calls," Khaled said.

"Scammers can employ different accents, genders, or even mimic the speech patterns of loved ones. [The technology] allows for the creation of convincing deep fakes."

In a global survey of 7,000 people from nine countries, including the United States, one in four people said they had experienced an AI voice cloning scam or knew someone who had.

Seventy per cent of the respondents said they were not confident they could "tell the difference between a cloned voice and the real thing," said the survey, published last month by the US-based McAfee Labs.

American officials have warned of a rise in what is popularly known as the "grandparent scam" -– where an imposter poses as a grandchild in urgent need of money in a distressful situation.

"You get a call. There's a panicked voice on the line. It's your grandson. He says he's in deep trouble —- he wrecked the car and landed in jail. But you can help by sending money," the US Federal Trade Commission said in a warning in March.

"It sounds just like him. How could it be a scam? Voice cloning, that's how."

In the comments beneath the FTC's warning were multiple testimonies of elderly people who had been duped that way.

<h2>'Malicious'</h2>

That also mirrors the experience of Eddie, a 19-year-old in Chicago whose grandfather received a call from someone who sounded just like him, claiming he needed money after a car accident.

The ruse, reported by McAfee Labs, was so convincing that his grandfather urgently started scrounging together money and even considered re-mortgaging his house, before the lie was discovered.

"Because it is now easy to generate highly realistic voice clones... nearly anyone with any online presence is vulnerable to an attack," Hany Farid, a professor at the UC Berkeley School of Information, told AFP.

"These scams are gaining traction and spreading."

Earlier this year, AI startup ElevenLabs admitted that its voice cloning tool could be misused for "malicious purposes" after users posted a deepfake audio purporting to be actor Emma Watson reading Adolf Hitler's biography "Mein Kampf."

"We're fast approaching the point where you can't trust the things that you see on the internet," Gal Tal-Hochberg, group chief technology officer at the venture capital firm Team8, told AFP.

"We are going to need new technology to know if the person you think you're talking to is actually the person you're talking to," he said.

Minus Zero has claimed that the self-driving car can be scaled up to "Level 5"&nbsp;autonomy, which is the highest autonomy ever achieved in such a vehicle.&nbsp;

This level of autonomy indicates that no human intervention is needed to operate&nbsp;it. Currently, the car zPod is "good enough"&nbsp;for use within an enclosed and controlled area like large residential complexes or campuses, stated Minus Zero.

<h2>No plans to build more cars, say founders</h2>

The start-up further aims to provide the tech to help OEMs improvise their advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).&nbsp;

Speaking to Business Today, the founders stated that zPod is only a car which has been designed to present before the world AI-based autonomous vehicle technology which has been developed by the company. They added that they do not plan to build cars.&nbsp;

"The camera operates by collecting data from its location using open APIs, utilising the address, weather, time of day, and nearby places. Combining all these data points, Paragraphica composes a paragraph that details a representation of the current place and moment," the website adds. A Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Wednesday (May 17) showed 61 per cent of Americans believe that artificial intelligence could threaten civilization. This comes as many companies across the board have raced to bring increasingly sophisticated models of AI to market, which has raised concerns among critics and industry experts.&nbsp;

The poll also showed that more than two-thirds of Americans are concerned about the negative effects of AI. However, it is not just people, critics or industry experts. The CEO of the organisation that began the so-called AI arms race, OpenAI, has also recently expressed concerns over the potential misuse of the technology.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, the CEO of the startup which created the ChatGPT chatbot, Sam Altman, addressed a panel of United States lawmakers and said regulation of the “increasingly powerful models” of artificial intelligence is “critical” to mitigate the risks the technology poses.&nbsp;

It is also worth noting that Americans who voted for former US President Donald Trump expressed higher levels of concern that AI could threaten humankind. As 70 per cent of Trump voters agreed when compared to 60 per cent of voters of incumbent President Joe Biden, said the Reuters/Ipsos poll.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, in the context of religious beliefs, the poll also showed that 32 per cent of Evangelical Christians “strongly agree” that AI presents risks to humanity as opposed to 24 per cent, non-Evangelical Christians.&nbsp;

According to the media report, 4,415 US adults participated in the online poll conducted between May 9 and May 15, which also has a credibility interval, a measure of accuracy, of plus or minus two percentage points. The poll also suggests that the number of Americans who believe in the adverse outcomes of AI is triple the number of those who don’t.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Shunsaku Sagami, a 32-year-old entrepreneur with a 72 per cent&nbsp;stake in the company, is worth $950 million as of May 16.

M&amp;A Research Institute, founded in 2018, aims to assist ageing owners of small and medium-sized enterprises who are forced to close their doors because no one is available to take over. In April, the business stated that 620,000 profitable enterprises in Japan face collapse owing to a shortage of successors.

In a recent interview, Sagami told Bloomberg that he was inspired to launch this firm by his grandpa, who was forced to close his real estate office in the 1980s after he retired due to a lack of a successor, reported the Business Insider.&nbsp;

According to its website, the business can conclude M&amp;A agreements in 49 days to six months using AI and proprietary data. As per&nbsp;the Tokyo-based company, these transactions often take more than a year from request to completion.

Until a transaction is completed, M&amp;A Research Institute does not charge any fees. It charges fees of up to 5 per cent&nbsp;for a successful closing.

"You might see a one-pilot aircraft. Could the aircraft be flown on a fully automated basis? Yes it could, technology is right up there now. [But passengers] like to think there are two pilots up there. There will always be somebody on the flight deck in my view," Clark stated.&nbsp;

“Pilots have diverse responsibilities beyond flying the aircraft. They act as navigators, engineers, technicians, weather experts, and customer service managers. On a typical day, pilots interact with various individuals, including aircrew, ground crew, cabin crew, air traffic control, and passengers. Effective communication is essential for pilots, both in aviation-specific terms (e.g., using radio communication with air traffic control) and on an interpersonal level,” he added.

AI pilots to fly passenger planes? Emirates airline president hints at possibility

An artificial intelligence (AI) model has been created by scientists, doctors and researchers which can identify cancer accurately, marking a developmental stage which can speed up the diagnosis of the disease and fast-track treatment.

Cancer has become a leading cause of fatalities throughout the world, resulting in around 10 million deaths every year, which is one in six patients, according to the World Health Organization.

However, in many cases, cancer can be cured and lives can be saved if it is detected early and swift treatment is provided to patients.

Experts from Royal Marsden NHS foundation trust along with Imperial College London and the Institute of Cancer Research, London, designed the AI tool which can identify if abnormal growths seen on a person's CT scans are cancerous.

As per the study, the performance of the algorithm has been more efficient and effective compared to the current methods. The research's findings were published in the eBioMedicine journal of the Lancet.

“In the future, we hope it will improve early detection and potentially make cancer treatment more successful by highlighting high-risk patients and fast-tracking them to earlier intervention,” stated Dr Benjamin Hunter, a clinical research fellow at Imperial and a clinical oncology registrar who works at the Royal Marsden.

The research team used CT scans of around 500 patients who had large lung nodules to create an AI algorithm with the use of radiomics. Through the technique, vital information can be extracted from medical images that the human eye fails to easily spot.

A measure, known as area under the curve (AUC), was used in the study to test the model's effectiveness at predicting cancer.

If a model gets an AUC of 1 it will be considered, with 0.5 indicating that it is randomly guessing. The results of the study showed that the risk of cancer in each nodule can be identified by the AI model with an AUC of 0.87.

“According to these initial results, our model appears to identify cancerous large lung nodules accurately,” said Hunter. “Next, we plan to test the technology on patients with large lung nodules in the clinic to see if it can accurately predict their risk of lung cancer,” he added.

Libra study’s chief investigator, Dr Richard Lee said, “Through this work, we hope to push boundaries to speed up the detection of the disease using innovative technologies such as AI.”

Speaking about lung cancer which is considered the biggest reason for cancer mortality, Lee stated, “People diagnosed with lung cancer at the earliest stage are much more likely to survive for five years when compared with those whose cancer is caught late. This means it is a priority we find ways to speed up the detection of the disease, and this study – which is the first to develop a radiomics model specifically focused on large lung nodules – could one-day support clinicians in identifying high-risk patients.”

“If you just took the next 18 months, the AIs will come in as a teacher’s aide and give feedback on writing. And then they will amp up what we’re able to do in math. Our bottleneck in math really is more of how we fit in the overall system and getting that teacher adoption," said Gates in the talk. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He had suggested that for such tutoring services, AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT Plus may charge, but Gates argued that they will still be more accessible and affordable compared to traditional human tutoring.

The discovery of a new planet has made a new addition to the ever-increasing catalogue of more than 5,000 exoplanets which have been discovered outside the solar system.

It took just around an hour for the AI to go through the data and point out the strong evidence which confirms the presence of a new planet in a specific spot.&nbsp;

“When we applied our models to a set of older observations, they identified a disk that wasn’t known to have a planet despite having already been analysed. Like previous discoveries, we ran simulations of the disk and found that a planet could re-create the observation,” added Jason.&nbsp;

The model which was processed using AI technology suggested that the planet is present in a particular region of the disk.

“This is an incredibly exciting proof of concept. We knew from our previous work that we could use machine learning to find known forming exoplanets. Now, we know for sure that we can use it to make brand new discoveries,” stated Cassandra Hall, principal investigator of the Exoplanet and Planet Formation Research Group at UGA.&nbsp;

In order to detect legal offences through cameras as part of the "Safe Kerala" project, the Motor Vehicle Department has opted to implement the "Fully Automated Traffic Enforcement System," claiming that roadside policing makes life difficult for the general public.

Elon Musk to launch his AI platform 'TruthGPT'

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) warned on Tuesday (April 18) that the United Kingdom (UK) government was failing to protect workers against the rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that would increasingly determine hiring and firing, and pay and promotion. According to a report by the Financial Times, the TUC argued that the government was failing to put in place the guard rails needed to protect workers as adoption of AI-powered technologies spread.&nbsp;

These technologies were already widely used to make life-changing decisions across the economy, the union said, adding AI systems were being widely used in recruitment. The TUC also encountered teachers' concerns that they were being monitored by systems originally introduced to track the performance of students. The report said that call centre workers reported that their colleagues were routinely allocated calls by AI programs&nbsp;that were more likely to lead to a good outcome, and so attract a bonus.

Mary Towers, a policy officer at the TUC, said that the rise of generative AI brought the renewed urgency to the need for legislation.&nbsp;

"These technologies are often spoken about as the future of work," Towers said, adding the TUC had evidence to show that it was widespread across employment relationships. "These are existing urgent problems in the workplace and they have been for sometime," she said.&nbsp;

The TUC also pointed out that the government's Data Protection and Digital Information Bill would dilute important existing protections for workers.&nbsp;

The government, meanwhile, criticised the TUC's assessment by saying it was wrong. A government spokesperson said that AI was set to drive growth and create new&nbsp;&nbsp;highly paid jobs across the UK.

According to a report by the Financial Times, the TUC argued that the government was failing to put in place the guard rails needed to protect workers as adoption of AI-powered technologies spread. These technologies were already widely used to make life-changing decisions across the economy, the union said, adding AI systems were being widely used in recruitment. The TUC also encountered teachers' concerns that they were being monitored by systems originally introduced to track the performance of students. The report said that call centre workers reported that their colleagues were routinely allocated calls by AI programs that were more likely to lead to a good outcome, and so attract a bonus. The CEO of Twitter and the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, launched a brand-new artificial intelligence firm named X.AI Corp. This is in light of Musk's suggested guidelines for creating an&nbsp;"everything app" dubbed "X" as well as his official rebranding of Twitter as X Corp.

Musk&nbsp;was named a director of the AI start-up, which was established in Nevada on March 9. His&nbsp;Neuralink company's CEO Jared Birchall, a former executive at Morgan Stanley, has been appointed&nbsp;as secretary.&nbsp;

The Wall Street Journal and Financial Times cited sources that said OpenAI, the creator of the widely used AI-based chat programme ChatGPT, will be a&nbsp;competitor to this new entrant.&nbsp; X.AI Corp. will also make a bid to take on OpenAI.

Elon helped launch OpenAI in 2015, but three years later he left the organisation's board of directors and grew sceptical of it, saying it had become a "closed source maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft."

In a tweet, the Twitter CEO said, "OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it “Open” AI), [a] non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, [the] maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft."

According to a recent Baycrest study, older persons tend to be less capable than their younger counterparts to distinguish between computer-generated (AI) speech and human speech. “Findings from this study on computer-generated AI speech suggest that older adults may be at a higher risk of being taken advantage of,” said Dr Bjorn Herrmann, Baycrest’s Canada Research Chair in Auditory Aging, Scientist at Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute and lead author of this study.

“While this area of research is still in its infancy, further findings could lead to the development of training programmes for older adults to help them navigate these challenges,” he said.

In this study, which was the first to examine AI speech recognition in older adults, younger (~30 years) and older (~60 years) adults listened to sentences spoken by 10 different human speakers (five male, five female) and sentences created using 10 AI voices (5 male, 5 female). In one experiment, participants were asked how natural they found the human and AI voices to be. In another, they were asked to identify whether a sentence was spoken by a human or by an AI voice.

Results showed that compared to younger adults, older adults found AI speech more natural and were less able to correctly identify when speech was generated by a computer.

The reasons for this remain unclear and are the subject of follow-up research by Dr Herrmann and his team. While they have ruled out hearing loss and familiarity with AI technology as factors, it could be related to older adults’ diminished ability to recognise different emotions in speech.

“As we get older, we seem to pay more attention to the actual words in speech than to its rhythm and intonation when trying to get information about the emotions being communicated,” said Dr Herrmann, adding, “It could be that recognition of AI speech relies on the processing of rhythm and intonation rather than words, which could, in turn, explain older adults’ reduced ability to identify AI speech.”
