To reach that percentage, Apple must invest in Indonesia and source Indonesian materials to be used for iPhone components, according to local media reports.

Apple did not respond to an AFP request for comment.

The company's revenues for the third quarter came in at $23.5 billion and marked a 36 per cent increase year-over-year, it said, according to the report. TSMC's net income also hit 325.3 billion New Taiwan dollars ($10.1 billion) against the LSEG estimate of NT$300.2 billion for the July-September quarter, said the media outlet. In contrast, the gross margin of TSMC improved to 57.8 per cent from 54.3 per cent during the same period last year.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Chief Financial Officer Wendell Huang said he is confident about the future performance of the company. "Based on the current business outlook, we expect fourth-quarter revenue to be between $26.1 billion and $26.9 billion, representing a 13 per cent sequential increase or a 35 per cent year-over-year increase at the midpoint," Huang said in an earnings call, according to a FactSet transcript.

The good third quarter was driven by healthy demand for TSMC's 3nm and 5nm technologies, which are particularly necessary for smartphones and AI-related applications. "Our business was supported by strong smartphone and AI-related demand," TSMC noted in a statement.

AI demand and future prospects

TSMC Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei emphasized the growing significance of AI in the semiconductor industry. Speaking during the earnings call, Wei said the demand for AI is "real," and that the growth experienced by TSMC was "the deepest and the widest" compared with others in the industry. Alphabet, which has not set a goal to cut emissions, and Apple, which set a broader target, are slowly crawling back towards 2019 levels, T&amp;E said.

The two ranked among the worst performers, each having managed corporate travel emissions reductions of just 23 per cent and 31 per cent, respectively, in 2023.

"How can (Google chief) Sundar Pichai say that Google is progressing to a sustainable future when its travel emissions are going in the wrong direction?" said Denise Auclair, corporate travel manager at T&amp;E.

Microsoft, IBM, and SAP are also on the list even though they had significant cuts, because they are among the companies that are flying the most without having set any reduction goals, T&amp;E said.

"Tech companies have claimed to be climate leaders for a long time, and many have substantially reduced their business travel emissions, but if they want to be credible, they must set reduction targets," Auclair added.

Reached for comment on its performance, Apple said it had already reduced its greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) emissions by more than 55 per cent since 2015 as part of its goal to be carbon-neutral by 2030.

"We're achieving this by making reductions across our entire carbon footprint — including business travel — and implementing significant cuts to the largest sources of our emissions," a spokesperson for Apple told Reuters.

Other firms were not immediately available for comment.
