Rain AI has tapped an erstwhile high-placed executive at Apple to steer the company's energy-efficient AI chip development plans. Jean-Didier Allegrucci was behind overseeing the development of processors that allowed iPhones and Macs to work independently of Intel Corp. chips. Now, he will lead Rain AI's hardware engineering efforts, an experience base that will drive that company's forays into energy-efficient chips.

He'll work closely alongside lead architect Amin Firoozshahian, who spent five years at Meta Platforms Inc. The high-profile recruitment is the second major hire Rain AI has made this month.

San Francisco-based Rain AI is backed by OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman and Y Combinator. The firm belongs to the growing crop of startups that are coming up with new hardware tailor-made for AI platforms. It focuses on in-memory compute technology, relatively new and similar to the way human brains process information. This means it processes data where it is stored, avoiding energy consumption associated with shuttling data to separate processors.

Rain AI joins Intel, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Samsung Electronics Co. in researching in-memory computing, but there are a lot of challenges to climb in terms of economic viability and ecological harm with this technology. Still, if more efficient chips are wanted-and they are essential for many more AI applications to spread throughout a fully loaded swath of devices-pursuing a new compute approach is necessary.

“Our novel compute-in-memory technology will help unlock the true potential of today’s generative AI models, and get us one step closer to running the fastest, cheapest, and most advanced AI models anywhere,” Rain AI Chief Executive Officer William Passo said in a statement.

The focus of Rain AI on energy-efficient chips couldn't be timelier, with the surging demand for AI capabilities. It accelerates the attainment of more sustainable yet higher-performance AI hardware.

Disappointment turned to anger for two sisters Parvathi and Janaki in their 20s, as they approached the entrance of the Foxconn iPhone factory in southern India.

After coming across a job opening advertisement on WhatsApp, they arrived for interviews in March 2023, hopeful for new opportunities.

However, their ambitions were halted at the gate by a security guard's discriminatory question, "Are you married?"

"We did not get the jobs as we both are married," Parvathi said in an interview at her village shanty.

“Disappointingly, even the auto-rickshaw driver who brought us here said, they wouldn't hire married women. Despite that, we held onto hope and decided to try anyway."

According to a Reuters investigation, Foxconn has analytically excluded married women from jobs at its main India iPhone assembly plant, on basis they have more family responsibilities than their unmarried counterparts.

S. Paul, a former human-resources executive at Foxconn India, said company relies on Indian recruitment agencies to find potential employees. These agencies are briefed verbally by Foxconn on the company's hiring criteria. This includes the initial candidate scouting, interview scheduling, and ultimately the hiring decisions.

Foxconn usually doesn't hire married women because of cultural issues and societal pressures, said Paul, who said he left the company in August 2023 for a better-paying role at a consulting firm.

The company's vision was that there were issues with women employees post-marriage, Paul added. “Among them were women have babies after marriage. Risk factors increase when you hire married women," he said.

Paul's account was confirmed by 17 employees from over a dozen Foxconn hiring agencies in India, and four current and ex-Foxconn HR executives.

Agents and company HR sources cited reasons such as family duties, pregnancy, and higher absenteeism to justify excluding them.

Additionally, many of these people also claimed jewellery worn by married Hindu women could interfere with production.

The ban isn't permanent. Three former Foxconn HR executives told Reuters that the Taiwan-headquartered manufacturer relaxes the practice of not hiring married women during high-production periods when it sometimes faces labour shortages.

In certain cases, hiring agencies also help female candidates conceal their marital status to secure jobs, Reuters found.

However, in response to questions from Reuters, Apple and Foxconn acknowledged lapses in hiring practices in 2022 and said they had worked to address the issues.

All the discriminatory practices documented by Reuters at the Sriperumbudur plant in Chennai, however, took place in 2023 and 2024. The companies didn't address those instances.

Though Indian law doesn't bar companies from discriminating in hiring based on marital status, Apple's and Foxconn's policies prohibit such practice in their supply chains.

Apple told Reuters it upholds the "highest supply chain standards in the industry," and noted that Foxconn employs some married women in India.

"When apprehension about hiring practices were first raised in 2022 we immediately took action and worked with our supplier to conduct monthly audits to identify issues and ensure that our high standards are upheld," Apple said in a statement.

However, Foxconn said it "vigorously refutes allegations of employment discrimination based on marital status, gender, religion or any other form."

Shares of Nvidia jumped 5 per cent on Tuesday after a 3-day slump that wiped off $430 billion from its market valuation. The tumble saw them lose around 13 per cent since the July 18 high. The drop followed a rally that accelerated after a 10-for-1 stock split. The drop also prompted speculations about a potential 'bubble' that could burst sooner or later.

Nvidia's shares, which last week momentarily overtook Apple as the most valuable business in the world, are up 152 per cent this year and made up about 30 per cent of the S&P 500's year-to-date return. This year, the index is up 14.6 per cent.

Though the recent decline in the share price of the company seems to have made traders more cautious, there was clear bullishness surrounding Nvidia in the options market.

Surging demand for AI technology has significantly benefited Nvidia. The company holds an almost 80 per cent share of the AI chip market, particularly in data centres. Their H100 accelerators facilitate complex AI computations, resulting in a revenue increase exceeding 125 per cent year-over-year. This trend continued last quarter, with Nvidia's data centre business experiencing a 427 per cent growth, generating $22.6 billion.

Analysts like Daniel Ives of Wedbush Securities estimate that Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft are in a fierce competition to be the first companies in the technology sector to reach a $4 trillion market cap. With AI skills, each is delving deeply into its competitive advantages in an effort to win over investors.

Apple is once again under fire from European regulators. The EU has accused the tech giant of violating the digital markets act, claiming Apple's app store policies unfairly restrict app developers. This could lead to significant fines for the company. Take a look at this next report…

EU opens another probe into Apple's third-party app contract

European Commission said Monday (June 24) that Apple's App Store rules violate the EU's landmark Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The Commission's preliminary findings indicate that Apple is restricting app developers from freely communicating with customers and directing them to alternative purchasing options outside the App Store.

The DMA, which came into effect in March 2024, is vying to limit the power of large tech platforms and ensure a level playing field for smaller businesses.

A key provision of the law prohibits so-called "gatekeepers" like Apple from preventing app developers from informing users about more cost-effective alternatives or subscription options beyond the app store.

However, the Commission's investigation found that Apple's current policies do not fully allow such "steering" by developers.

"Our preliminary position is that Apple does not fully allow steering," said Margrethe Vestager, the EU's Executive Vice-President in charge of competition policy.

"Steering is key to ensure that app developers are less dependent on gatekeepers' app stores and for consumers to be aware of better offers."

The Commission also argued that the fees Apple charges developers for acquiring new customers through the App Store go "beyond what is strictly necessary" under the DMA.

EU has also opened a separate investigation into Apple's new contractual requirements for third-party app developers and app stores, including a "Core Technology Fee" that developers must pay.

Apple could face fines

Apple now has the opportunity to respond to the Commission's preliminary conclusions. If the EU's concerns are ultimately confirmed, Apple could face fines of up to 10 per cent of its global annual turnover for breaching the DMA.

The tech giant has maintained that it has already made changes to comply with the new EU rules, stating that "more than 99 per cent of developers would pay the same or less in fees to Apple under the new business terms we created."

This latest development marks an escalation in the EU's efforts to rein in the power of Big Tech platforms.

With the Digital Markets Act now in force, regulators are demonstrating their willingness to take on even the largest and most influential companies to ensure a more competitive and consumer-friendly digital space.

EU finds Apple's app store policies in breach of Digital Markets Act

Three tech giants - Nvidia, Microsoft, and Apple are racing towards an unprecedented 4 trillion dollar market cap, each fueled by advancements in artificial intelligence. Watch in for more details!

Who will hit $4 trillion market cap first?

Nvidia becomes the world's most valuable company, surpassing tech giants Microsoft and Apple. Nvidia's market capitalization reached $3.33 trillion, driven by a 3.2 percent rise in its stock price. To put that into perspective, the valuation of the tech giant now equals that of India's GDP.

Gravitas: Nvidia's market value surpasses Microsoft & Apple

Nvidia has stormed the technology market, surging past giants Apple and Microsoft to become the world's most valuable company. That marks a new high point for the dominance of AI in the investor landscape. Nvidia's shares advanced as much as 3.6 per cent on June 18 to lift its market cap to a record $3.34 trillion, pushing it past Microsoft's $3.32 billion and Apple's $3.29 trillion.

Nvidia's meteoric rise is mostly due to surging demand for AI technology. The firm took a nearly 80 per cent share in the AI chip market, particularly in data centres. Its H100 accelerators play a huge part in running complex AI computations and conclusively led to Nvidia strengthening its sales. That also means that the revenues have increased by more than 125 percent just last year. Nvidia's data centre business posted astonishing 427 per cent year-over-year growth last quarter and delivered $22.6 billion, that is 86 per cent of its total sales.

According to Bloomberg, this ranking shift is a testament to AI's paramount significance for investors. With technology at the core of powering data centres and facilitating complex AI tasks, Nvidia is truly at the very frontline in this revolution of AI technology. This surge in AI-driven demand has taken the stock price by more than 170 per cent in 2024 alone, adding over $2 trillion to its market cap.

Success doesn't come just from chip sales at Nvidia-it comes from panoramic systems; company-proprietary software and a complete development ecosystem. "They're not just selling chips, they're selling systems," says Michael Lippert, vice president and portfolio manager at Baron Capital Inc.

More than that, however, such a shift by Nvidia from merely being a niched chipmaker for gamers to dominating AI hardware demonstrates the strategic agility this company possesses. Earlier known for its graphics chips that powered elaborate gaming, Nvidia diversified into AI, cryptocurrency mining chips, and cloud gaming subscriptions.

While Nvidia continues to dominate the AI hardware market, Microsoft and Apple are leading in terms of actually putting AI to work. Microsoft, which made a massive bet on OpenAI, has been pushing AI models into its core products, including Office and Windows. Microsoft is also one of the biggest buyers of Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) for its Azure cloud service. Apple has just announced its AI plans, and this has stirred investors' interest, sending its stock briefly higher.

Estimates from analysts such as Wedbush Securities' Daniel Ives peg Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft to be embroiled in a hot contest toward becoming the first to hit $4 trillion in market cap in the technology sector. Each is digging deep into its competitive advantages with AI expertise in hopes of gaining investor sentiment.

Nvidia's climb to the top has been steep and record. Its share price has more than increased ninefold since the end of 2022, the time of the AI explosion. The rise catapulted the net worth of its co-founder CEO Jensen Huang to about $117 billion, easily making him the 11th wealthiest person in the world.

With Nvidia on a continuous rise, the million-dollar question on everyone's mind seems to be whether it can really hold on to its upward trajectory to be the first tech company with $4 trillion in market capitalisation. Its ingenious handling of the fact that AI has stormily taken over the world of technology and investor interest does give Nvidia an edge over other companies in the digital space. In the dynamic technology sphere of competition, Apple and Microsoft will also be strong contenders for the race.

Apple Inc stated on Monday that it will end its "buy now, pay later" (BNPL) service, Apple Pay Later, in the United States as it prepares to introduce a new lending program. Users will be able to receive instalment loans using credit and debit cards, as well as various lenders, while paying with Apple Pay beginning later this year, according to the business.

"This solution will enable us to bring flexible payments to more users, in more places across the globe in collaboration with Apple Pay-enabled banks and lenders," said Apple.

The move is part of Apple's overall goal to improve its financial services offering. In comparison to the current BNPL service, the new program is expected to provide users with more flexibility and options.

Despite the closure of Apple Pay Later, current users with open loans can continue manage and pay them using the Wallet app. Apple Pay Later, which was introduced to a restricted group of users in March of last year, allowed customers to split purchases into four instalments over six weeks without incurring any interest or fees.

The decision to discontinue the BNPL service in favour of the new loan program represents a fundamental shift in Apple's approach to consumer financing. Apple Pay's integration with credit and debit cards, as well as partnerships with established lenders, promises to deliver a more comprehensive and accessible financial service.

Apple to discontinue BNPL service in the US, introduces new loan program

A disgruntled UK man was suing Apple after his wife discovered his text messages sent to sex workers that he had apparently 'deleted' on another device. The ordeal eventually led to his divorce, for which the UK man is blaming the US phone maker. The man says Apple's lack of transparency regarding the status of deleted messages led to the collapse of his marriage.

What happened?

The man, whose name has not been disclosed publically, admitted in an interview that he contacted sex workers via the iMessage app on his iPhone.

Apple's market valuation hits $3.29 trillion

Apple recaptured its status as the world's most valuable company on Wednesday, beating Microsoft as the iPhone maker pushed ahead in the fight to dominate artificial intelligence technology. Apple's stock jumped nearly 4 per cent to a record $215.04, bringing its market capitalisation to $3.29 trillion. In contrast, Microsoft's market value was $3.24 trillion, marking the first time in five months that it trailed Apple. This market rally coincides with the tech-heavy Nasdaq reaching a new high, aided by hints of slowing inflation.

AI advances fuel stock surge

The recent leap in Apple's shares followed a 7 per cent increase in the previous session, in response to the company's announcement of AI-enabled features and software upgrades for its devices. Analysts predict that these developments will considerably increase iPhone sales. At Apple's annual developer conference on Monday, CEO Tim Cook and other executives demonstrated how the speech assistant Siri can now interact with texts, emails, calendars, and third-party apps. "All those questions about Apple's lag in AI technology were answered at the Worldwide Developers Conference," said Michael James, managing director of equity trading for Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles. The inclusion of AI capabilities in the next iPhones is expected to spark a big upgrade cycle, boosting demand for Apple's flagship product.

Despite trailing competitors such as Microsoft and Alphabet in the AI industry, Apple's latest developments have alleviated concerns about its market performance. The computer giant's shares had trailed peers this year, but a good quarterly performance and a record $110 billion buyback plan unveiled in May have improved investor confidence. Apple's stock has climbed by around 12 per cent in 2024, while Microsoft's has increased by 16 per cent and Alphabet's by roughly 28 per cent.

In the broader IT environment, AI chip leader Nvidia, which temporarily surpassed Apple's market worth last week, has seen its shares rise by 154 per cent this year, with a market capitalisation of $3.11 trillion. Meanwhile, Tesla is the only other 'Magnificent Seven' stock to have performed worse than Apple this year, with a 30 per cent drop. Despite these hurdles, Apple's strategic focus on AI, as well as its ongoing product innovation, demonstrate the company's resilience and capacity to sustain its technological leadership.

"We already offer thousands of great emoji for our users, but now with Genmoji and the power of Apple Intelligence, the possibilities for creative and personalised expression are endless," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, during the WWDC keynote.

The new Genmoji feature, a part of the broader Apple Intelligence AI framework, will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and later, recent iPad models, and Mac computers with M1 chips or newer.

However, it will only become available to users running iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia when those operating system updates are released this fall.

The AI-powered feature even allows making Genmoji based on photos of friends and family in the user's library. The custom Genmoji can be used inline in Messages chats, as sticker images, or as Tapback reactions.
