On an emotional level, it was very cathartic to me as a person to be able to do this role and I have huge respect for soldiers. I myself want to give an ode to the spirit of a soldier. <p>Akshay Kumar may have started his career playing the quintessential Bollywood action hero, but in recent years, the man has very meticulously created an image of a man on a mission to change society and get rid of the ills that plague it. He has dealt with issues of menstrual hygiene and open defecation in his previous films. In his latest 'Raksha Bandhan' he is taking on the dowry system head-on- along with his four onscreen sisters.</p>

<p>Directed by Anand L Rai and written by <strong>Himanshu Sharma</strong> and <strong>Kanika Dhillon,</strong> 'Raksha Bandhan' reeks of a 1990s social melodrama. It almost remains so throughout. Akshay Kumar leads this very elaborate, slightly illogical film which at the onset makes every woman feel like a liability to her family.<br />
&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>The story of 'Raksha Bandhan'?</strong></p>

<p>Akshay Kumar<strong> </strong>plays Lala Kedarnath who runs a chat shop in Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi. His <em>gol gappas</em> are popular especially among expecting mothers as one bite of it ensures the birth of a healthy son. Lala has four sisters, who we are repeatedly told are burdens to him. Even though he loves all four of them dearly, he only dreams of getting them all married as he had promised his mother on her death bed that he would only settle down in life once he gets all four married. His lady love Sapna (Bhumi Pednekar) grunts, yells and threatens him on a daily basis frustrated at waiting in the wings while Lala gets his sisters married one by one.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from the eldest Geeta, the rest are constantly taunted by Lala and the society at large for being fat, dark and for not being feminine enough. The man has to not only find suitable boys for his sisters but also gather the dowry money for each of them. Seems like a herculean task for a man who sells savouries for a living. While time is ticking on his relationship with Sapna, how Lala manages to get his sisters married forms the rest of the story.</p>

<p>Social issues are best dealt with comically. '<strong>Raksha Bandhan' </strong>is no different. Besides the script that tries to lighten the mood while dealing with something as serious as dowry, it also features <strong>Akshay Kumar</strong> a man who is known for his comic timing. Kumar as the hassled, dutiful older brother cake walks through his part but is also very loud and melodramatic in his depiction of his character.</p>

<p>Melodrama can easily be the middle name of 'Raksha Bandhan'. It tries to project the relationship between siblings almost at a godly level. In a bid to get the required money for dowry, Lala is willing to mortgage his shop, sell his kidney and whatnot! For a greater part of the film, no one really asks the sisters what they want to do in life. All seem to be okay with the fact that their brother will pay a hefty amount to get them married off. Set in present times, it is rather bizarre to see these young women who are comfortable with their body type and skin and yet seem okay to the dowry system.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Most characters cry at the drop of a hat. Akshay Kumar gets emotional in almost every other scene. When his sister's marriage is fixed, he wells up. When he is angry with his ancestors he screams, cries and throws stones at their photos. Not just him, his sisters, his girlfriend - all have the waterworks ready at the drop of a hat.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Certain characters are constantly shamed for their body type, and the colour of their skin and even when the characters turn a new leaf, they never apologise for being so obtuse with their criticism. It's 2022 and any joke on skin colour and body type should not be accepted irrespective of the greater intent of the film. Writers really need to think hard while writing such scripts and be more imaginative with lines and situations. The old tropes of making fun of a fat girl and her diet are done and dusted.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Second half of the film is impactful</strong><br />
<br />
While the first half is cringe-worthy with all the melodrama and impractical storyline, the film redeems itself to a great extent in the second half when the film finally gets its voice and does its messaging clearly. By then, as an audience, you are more immune to loud acting that's on display. Instead, you will find yourself cheering at some powerful lines on empowering the women instead of considering them as liabilities- lines that come very late in the film.<br />

None of the performances is great. Akshay Kumar, who is known for comic timing hams throughout the film. So do the rest of the cast. Bhumi Pednekar, an otherwise powerful performer, has limited screen time and her character is not well written. She barely gets any scope to emote. Newcomer Sadia Khatib, who plays the eldest sister Geeta, shows some spark in her limited role.&nbsp;</p>

Would the film have less of an impact if the makers had cut down on the drama? 'Raksha Bandhan' releases in theatres on August 11.&nbsp;<br />

An old tweet of Kanika Dhillon, the screenwriter of 'Raksha Bandhan' has resurfaced on Twitter and some people claimed it is Hinduphobic. A few other old tweets of the writer to have been called out with people claiming it hurts the religious sentiments of people.&nbsp;<br />

Akshay Kumar announces ‘Raksha Bandhan’ trailer release date with a new poster 

<p>The lead pair of Anand L Rai's latest 'Atrangi Re' are stark opposites. He is a medical student, she is a vagabond. He is from the south, she is from up north. He is polite, caring, she only listens to her heart. They both are in love with other people but fate forces them to get married.</p>

<p><strong>* This review may contain spoilers.&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>Both Vishu (Dhanush) and Rinku (Sara Ali Khan) &nbsp;come to an agreement that they will go their separate ways once they reach Delhi. Post their forced wedding, the two have been packed off to Delhi on a train. Vishu has to head to Chennai to get engaged to his college sweetheart and Rinku is waiting for her lover Sajjad (Akshay Kumar) to get back to India from a work trip in Africa. He is a magician, claims Rinku to Vishu.</p>

<p>Things go awry when Vishu's fiance finds out about his secret wedding and he finds himself defending his wife, Rinku in front of his future in-laws. As they head back to Delhi, Vishu realises he is in love with Rinku. But unsettling secrets tumble out and issues of mental health crop up as Rinku realises she is drawn towards Sajjad and Vishu at the same time.</p>

<p>Filmmaker Anand L Rai' and writer and producer Himanshu Sharma, have earlier worked together in films like 'Tanu Weds Manu', 'Zero', Ranjhana. In all these films, female characters are usually rebels, feisty and bossy. 'Atrangi Re' is no different. Rinku is not an easy person to be around which perhaps makes her more attractive for the opposite sex. But the problem in 'Atrangi Re' lies in its treatment of mental health and symptoms related to the various diseases. One of the main characters in the film has symptoms of schizophrenia and instead of treating it with sensitivity, it almost makes it comical, making the writers appear tone-deaf about issues related to mental illness.</p>

<p>At one point in the film, Vishu and his psychiatrist friend Madhukar (Ashish Verma) are shown seated in a small theatre packed with people, aimlessly clapping at Sara Ali Khan who is on stage supposedly aiding Kumar in performing magic tricks. When Vishu asks his friend who are the people in the audience, Madhukar replies 'they are my patients, all suffering from some ailment like Alzheimer, dementia etc. They will surely clap without questioning much.'The scene may infuriate mental health practitioners. It's is quite cringe-worthy to be fair. That's not all, the absurdities lie in the entire story. How is Rinku allowed to stay with Vishu for days at his college hostel? Why does Vishu and his friends- all final year medic students- indulge Rinku and her whims so much? So many plot points remain sketchy throughout 'Atrangi Re'.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
That has been a problem in several of Rais films. They trivialize issues or glorify them in the name of true love or unintentionally (I hope) end up offending a certain section of society.</p>

But the actor brings in effortless charm, a certain vulnerability to his role which stays with you much after the film is over. You know that the story is vague and illogical but you want to play along just like Vishu because you want him to be happy.</p>

<p>Some of the scenes though pull your heartstrings. When Vishu professes his love to Rinku in his mother tongue and minutes later Rinku runs off to welcome her lover while Vishu wipes his tears and walks away is a very special moment in the film and performed very well by the principal cast. Then the climax scene- where there are no dialogues but so much is explained about Rinku and Sajjad's past is a powerful scene.&nbsp;<br />

The film has AR Rahman churning out some melodious tunes. 'Rait Zarasi' and 'Little little' particularly stand out. Shot by Pankaj Kumar, the film is visually very pleasing. Some silhouette shots, the 'Chakachak' song are so well shot. So are the scenes featuring Akshay Kumar in a circus, performing magic tricks.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
In the end 'Atrangi Re' is an indulgent story. Takes ample liberties, leaves several questions unanswered and misses the conversation around mental health by a mile. It deserves a watch only for Dhanush and Rahman's music.</p>

Vishu has to head to Chennai to get engaged to his college sweetheart and Rinku is waiting for her lover Sajjad (Akshay Kumar) to get back to India from a work trip in Africa. He is a magician, claims Rinku to Vishu. Things go awry when Vishu's fiance finds out about his secret wedding and he finds himself defending his wife, Rinku in front of his future in-laws. As they head back to Delhi, Vishu realises he is in love with Rinku. But unsettling secrets tumble out and issues of mental health crop up as Rinku realises she is drawn towards Sajjad and Vishu at the same time. Filmmaker Anand L Rai' and writer and producer Himanshu Sharma, have earlier worked together in films like 'Tanu Weds Manu', 'Zero', Ranjhana. In all these films, female characters are usually rebels, feisty and bossy. 'Atrangi Re' is no different. Rinku is not an easy person to be around which perhaps makes her more attractive for the opposite sex. But the problem in 'Atrangi Re' lies in its treatment of mental health and symptoms related to the various diseases. One of the main characters in the film has symptoms of schizophrenia and instead of treating it with sensitivity, it almost makes it comical, making the writers appear tone-deaf about issues related to mental illness. At one point in the film, Vishu and his psychiatrist friend Madhukar (Ashish Verma) are shown seated in a small theatre packed with people, aimlessly clapping at Sara Ali Khan who is on stage supposedly aiding Kumar in performing magic tricks. When Vishu asks his friend who are the people in the audience, Madhukar replies 'they are my patients, all suffering from some ailment like Alzheimer, dementia etc. They will surely clap without questioning much.'The scene may infuriate mental health practitioners. It's is quite cringe-worthy to be fair. That's not all, the absurdities lie in the entire story. How is Rinku allowed to stay with Vishu for days at his college hostel? Why does Vishu and his friends- all final year medic students- indulge Rinku and her whims so much? So many plot points remain sketchy throughout 'Atrangi Re'. That has been a problem in several of Rais films. They trivialize issues or glorify them in the name of true love or unintentionally (I hope) end up offending a certain section of society. <p>It's amazing that in a year where entertainment industry world over has witnessed a sea change in terms of representation and inclusion, a film keeps using the word 'normal' to describe a person who is not a dwarf. Filmmaker Anand L Rai's latest film 'Zero' has Shah Rukh Khan playing a dwarf and one would expect the ace director and superstar to churn out a memorable film if not a pathbreaking one. But 'Zero' doesn't do any of those things. It, in fact, forces down your throat the most illogical story of all time.</p>

<p>'Zero' begins with much potential. Bauua Singh (SRK) may not have got the height, but has immense confidence which keeps him going. He has a difficult relationship with his family, is made fun of most often by everyone around him- but he takes it in his stride. He laughs the most at himself and loves himself the most. A self-centered guy, Bauua is unapologetic about his nature and his obsession towards the idea of love. When he is sent on a date with &nbsp;Aafiya (Anushka Sharma) a space scientist with cerebral palsy, he is most upset about the fact that she doesn't bother to look at him despite his little frame and cocky behaviour. As he woos Aafiya, his agenda is clear- he just wants her to fall for him. But for Aafiya, it is love as she finally finds someone speaking to her at her level. She is a person with special needs, is wheelchair bound- yet she is treated normally and not with sympathy by Bauua Singh.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As Afiya lands in Meerut to meet Bauua's family and they in turn hastily fix the two's wedding, Bauua discovers that Babita Kumari (Katrina Kaif), the big Bollywood star, is in town and heads over to meet her. A chance encounter at&nbsp;night on a deserted highway, a kiss from the superstar and a ticket to a dance reality show in Mumbai makes Bauua walk out on Aafiya on their wedding day.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the first half is breezy enough, with SRK in his elements, charming the audience and Aafiya with his wit, comic timing and <em>Meeruthiya</em> swag it's the long second half, where Bauua lives in Mumbai and realises the world of glamour is far from perfect that the film starts to become illogical- to put it mildly. Mind you, his charm is effervescent SRK style, not really Bauua's own. It is almost an extension of the actor himself, which always does manage to impress us.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Written by Himanshu Sharma- who has in the past written 'Tanu Weds Manu'- the film over-indulges and literally spills out on screen as SRK's personal wishlist. Here is a superstar, who after ruling the box office for decades, has played myriad roles in his career. What has he not played before? A dwarf! But instead of talking about disabilities and being a tad sensitive towards who are born with physical deformities, the film makes Bauua a miracle man. He romances, emotes, dances like all the characters that SRK has played before in his career. Apart from the height, there is really not too much difference between Raj of DDLJ and Bauua of 'Zero'. Both are brash, irritating and self-centered and they both realise their inner feelings the hard way.&nbsp;</p>

It is also tough to understand that a man with no proper profession finds cash in abundance to splurge on himself, his friend and the women he loves. Then, of course, there is a long-drawn space mission that takes over the latter part of the second half and SRK even casually slips in a patriotic line or two.</p>

<p>Among the ladies, it is Katrina Kaif who shines the most. The actress delivers her career's best performance as the dissuaded star Babita Kumari. There is a certain nonchalance to her stardom and she is a conflicted personality and Kaif shines in a role that could be an extension of many actors in real life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Anushka's tries. Aafiya is a woman who is a genius but with disabilities. It isn't an easy role by any standards and Anushka gets it right to an extent but tends to ham a bit in certain portions. Had the writing been more coherent, Anushka would have delivered a far more convincing performance.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The film has several cameos. Because it's a big budget film, SRK, who is also the producer of the film, gets some prominent names to play walk-away parts. Abhay Deol, R Madhavan play the other halves to the leading ladies who instead pine for Bauua. There is also the late Sridevi along with Rani Mukerji, Aalia Bhatt, Juhi Chawla, Kajol, Deepika Padukone and Karisma Kapoor who appear in an absolutely unnecessary scene which is well cringe-worthy. Salman Khan's song also seems hurriedly put together just to show off the two actors' camaraderie.&nbsp;</p>

Boys &amp; girls I do a film when I say I am doing it....otherwise, it’s just post truth.”</p>

<p>At the Ted Talks India event that took place yesterday, Khan opened up on what he’s busy with next. He said that he is working on two to three scripts and will announce in a month or two. During the event, he said, “I am thinking and taking some time. I am working on two or three scripts and, Inshallah, as soon as they are ready, I am ready. Because most of the people with whom I am working are busy so, Inshallah, I will announce it myself. I feel till the time rumours are floating around, it's good because some of them have given me ideas.”</p>

<p>He added that there was one film people said that “I am going to do -- Tarzan and Jane and now, I really want to do the role of Tarzan (laughs). But no. I think, Inshallah, in another month or two, I will figure out everything.”</p>

<p>It isn't every day that two of Bollywood's biggest stars- Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan- share screen space together. When the two hugged and made up in 2013 after years of feud, they created headlines. Now the two feature in a song 'Issaqbaazi' in the film 'Zero' and needless to say the song will be a blockbuster.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shah Rukh Khan took Twitter on Tuesday to release the song which not just features Salman and him but also Bollywood choreographers Ganesh Hegde and Remo D'Souza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>His forthcoming film <em>Mukkabaaz</em>&nbsp;deals with the deep-rooted casteism which stands tall on the shoulders of corruption even today and director Anurag Kashyap says it was about time movies based on socio-political issues made a comeback in Bollywood.</p>

<p>The 45-year-old filmmaker says 1960s saw films by Bimal Roy and Hrishikesh Mukherji, who highlighted social problems in their films, and these issues were dealt with utmost care on celluloid just how he has stayed honest to his story.<br />

In an interview with PTI, Kashyap says, &quot;We grew up in a time when we made socio-political films, filmmakers like Bimal Roy, Hrishikesh Mukherji, Raj Kapoor made films that dealt with elements in society about casteism, widows, unwed mothers etc. These films were appreciated by the audience but then we stopped making them but again that trend has come back (in films).</p>

<p>&quot;Our film is about boxing, so we have to be honest to our story, it is about where do boxers come from, what is the status of boxing in society and the like.&quot;<br />

The film traces the story of a boxer from UP, named Shravan Singh, played by Vineet Kumar Singh, who belongs to a low caste and falls in love with a Brahmin woman.</p>

<p>Things go south when he lands a punch on boxing federation head and politician-gangster, Bhagwan Das, part essayed by Jimmy Shergill.</p>
