Things got heated up in the last one week as Scott Perry, member of US Congress representing 10th district Pennsylvania, wrote a letter to President Joe Biden asking to reject the appointment of Masood Khan for his connections with the terror groups and terrorists. Exposing the ambassador designate’s profile, Perry listed out specific cases of complicity of the Pakistani diplomat. These inter alia include his proactive proximity to the dreaded terror outfit Hizbul Mujahdeen (HuM) in stark and unsettling terms.

Nomination of such a tainted Pakistani diplomat at the express behest of Prime Minister Imran Khan knowing fully well that Masood Khan is linked to the terrorists and had been encouraging terrorists to target the US reflects the malafides of the ambassador-designate and the extent of contempt that Pakistan holds for the US.&nbsp;

There is sufficient evidence to suggest that Masood Khan has been abetting youth in Kashmir for radicalization and exhorting them to take up arms to hit out at the security forces. There is also ample evidence on record that in 2017, Masood Khan had castigated the US for designating the HuM leader for sanctions terming them as unjustifiable.&nbsp;

Later in 2019, he collaborated with Fazlul Rahman Khalil by appearing with him on the issue of Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). It may be recalled that Fazlul Rahman is the founder of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen which has already been declared as a foreign terrorist organisation. This outfit and it’s affiliates had active links both with Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda. Khalil was also a key member of International Islamic Front which had issued a fatwa in 1998 calling for terror offensives on the US.

Further, the allegations include that Masood Khan has perverse attachment to Islamic terrorism and is also supported by the most radicalised Jamat-e-Islami which is actively linked with Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT). The LeT has been linked with the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.&nbsp;

The list of allegations against Masood is endless including the charge that in 2010, he had openly, and most indiscreetly called for the release of mass murderer Aafia Siddiqui and his acts are akin to the actions of a jihadist.

Many points against him surely do not qualify him to be an accepted candidate to become an ambassador in the US and this is well articulated in the letter from Congressman Scott Perry who is vehemently opposing Masood’s posting to Washington.

The letter addressed to President Biden has set the tone in the US government circles, media fraternity and the academia towards building up of a public opinion so that Masood’s appointment is shot down in the larger geo-political and security interests.&nbsp;

Concerned quarters, meanwhile, state that Masood, though a Pashtun by birth, was President of the Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir during which he systematically cultivated Kashmiri terrorists and became radicalised to support them.

This also led him to develop a pathological hatred for the US and, therefore, we see his hate speeches against the US which have never been politically correct or discreet. They were also conspicuously bereft of any diplomatic utterances and instead were more akin to jihadi speeches against the US which now Congressman Perry is bringing up with much hype.

US on its part, seems to be moving cautiously by being indecisive since November last year when Masood Khan’s appointment proposal reached Washington.&nbsp;

It looks like it’s paused for now. Perhaps the US is weighing all the options very carefully as it doesn’t want to dump Pakistan in a lurch specially to attempt and woo it away from the Chinese camp. Hence this delay.

However, it must be borne in mind that Masood Khan held two postings in Beijing. One as a full-fledged Pakistani Ambassador from 2008 to 2012 and earlier as a junior diplomat.&nbsp;

It’s also possible that he is doing things on prompting from China. China and Pakistan enjoy close ties. China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) gets overriding priority and China.

Masood Khan’s case under reference may be a test case. US doesn’t seem to be in a hurry and is moving with abundant caution. In whichever case the Masood case, it seems, will not be so simple and easy for the US and Pakistan to put their bilateral ties on the rails which stand more impaired after the US pulled out from Afghanistan in August last year.

However, with the aid of stringent procedures rigidly followed by the health care system, the Indian government and its people, the disease was more or less stopped in its tracks.

Mass vaccinations, successful containment and mitigation methods, have proved to be a boon to the country.

The Indian health care system that has been frequently labelled as inefficient, sluggish and bureaucratic has gone on to demonstrate how even the most experienced observers may be misled by appearances.

It has convincingly demonstrated that, while it may resemble the good old ambassador car, it is propelled by none other than the prancing horse of Ferrari.

So what really has made a difference?&nbsp;

Clearly, India has learnt from past failures in organisation and deployment.

The country, in recent years, had tremendous failures in coordination between states and the centre when rollouts happened on ambitious, well-meaning schemes such as Goods and Services Tax.

In the past, there have been coordination failures, at least by way of allegations, in the Indian parliamentary elections. The greatest democratic exercise known to mankind.

But this time, in the face of an unprecedented crisis, India banded together. And more remarkably, the formless, shapeless, "system" seems to have come together to deliver the biggest vaccination drive ever, in the face of odds that the rest of the world, especially our friends in the West, imagined to be insurmountable. And remember, much of the developed world is still struggling with their vaccination drives due to a combination of ignorance, misinformation and logistical issues.

So, what really made the impossible possible for India? Whatever we may think of the "system" as Indians, it does react when it needs to, and it did.

Our civil services system, which is infamously difficult to get into, has delivered.

People who can make a difference have made a difference, proving that they can, and do, deliver when needed.

Most importantly, the political menagerie came together and understood that irrespective of their ideological differences, saving Indian lives is more important than anything else on the agenda.

So while people in Georgia still dispute the merits of the vaccine, people in Gorakhpur are lining up to get vaccinated.

We can reserve the discussion about who is "civilised" for another day.

For now, we can say for sure that the world can learn from India a thing or two about managing pandemics.&nbsp;

India's mammoth COVID-19 vaccination drive: The body is an Ambassador car, but the engine is a Ferrari

Having taken up his post as Germany's ambassador to China merely two weeks ago, Jan Hecker unexpectedly passed away today, the foreign office of Germany declared on Monday.

It was not yet known what caused the death.

"It is with deep sadness and dismay that we learned of the sudden death of the German ambassador to China," said Germany's Federal Foreign Office on its website.

During a regular media briefing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin expressed condolences over Hecker's death.

"We are shocked to learn about the sudden death of Ambassador&nbsp;Hecker, who had been working actively to promote China-Germany relations since assuming his post," he said.

Hecker's family and the embassy will receive assistance from China, he added.

Last Friday, Hecker hosted an event about German artist Joseph Beuys at his Beijing home. The attendees of the event described him as "happy and all right."

At the German embassy in Beijing, the flags of the European Union and Germany flew at half-mast on Monday.

Reuters reports that Hecker, 54, a foreign policy adviser to Chancellor Angela Merkel, presented his credentials at the Chinese foreign ministry on Aug. 24.

The German embassy reported that Hecker arrived in China on Aug. 1, and that, as with all arrivals, he would have had to spend time in quarantine.

A Brazilian court has sentenced Francoise de Souza Oliveira to 31 years in prison for murdering her husband,&nbsp;Greek&nbsp;ambassador&nbsp;Kyriakos Amiridis, authorities said Sunday.

Amiridis, 59 at the time of his death in 2016, lived in Brasilia and was on vacation for the Christmas holidays with his&nbsp;wife&nbsp;and his daughter in Rio de Janeiro.

Days after Christmas, the remains of the diplomat were found inside his charred rental car and ripped out under a bridge, in the municipality of Nova Iguacu, near the state capital.

A police investigation found numerous clues, including blood on a sofa and security camera footage, that implicated Sergio Gomes Moreira Filho, military policeman and lover of Francoise.

The two were sentenced to 22 years in prison, initially without parole.&nbsp;

"The circumstances of the crime are atypical, since (the&nbsp;ambassador) was executed during the Christmas holidays ... in this case, this family was torn apart," said the Judge Anna Christina da Silveira Fernandes, of the 4th Criminal Court of Nova Iguacu.&nbsp;

The trial had a third defendant: Eduardo Moreira Tedeschi de Melo, a relative of the policeman, who was acquitted of the&nbsp;murder&nbsp;charge but sentenced to one year probation, already served, for helping to hide the body.&nbsp;

In the trial, which lasted for three days, until Friday, the judge heard 18 witnesses.&nbsp;

In her decision, the magistrate also referred to the accused in their capacity as public servants.&nbsp;

"He swore to defend society and not rebel against it, dishonouring the Military Police and all the trust placed in him by the State," she said, referring to Sergio Gomes Moreira Filho.&nbsp;

And she pointed out that De Souza Oliveira, "who calls herself an&nbsp;ambassador, tarnished the name of&nbsp;Brazil&nbsp;and embarrassed the nation with her conduct, given the negative international repercussions of the events."&nbsp;

Russia's ambassador to Afghanistan Dmitry Zhirnov has said there is no alternative to Taliban in Afghanistan and added that any kind of resistance to the Islamist group would fail.

US President announces picks for ambassador to China, Japan positions

Afghanistan's ambassador to Tajikistan Zahir Aghbar on Wednesday rejected Taliban's control of his country and said that hold-out Panjshir province will be a stronghold for resistance led by self-proclaimed acting president of Afghanistan Amrullah Saleh.

Saleh, First Vice-President of Afghanistan, on Tuesday said that he was "legitimate caretaker president" of Afghanistan after President Ashraf Ghani fled the country. Saleh's whereabouts were unknown.

Panjshir was the home of the Northern Alliance anti-Taliban resistance in the 1990s and is still a hold-out province against Taliban rule.

Lieutenant General Zahir Aghbar, who held senior positions in Afghan state security including chief of police before becoming ambassador, said Ghani was a traitor.

"I cannot say that the Taliban have won the war. No, it was just Dr Ashraf Ghani who gave up power after treacherous talks with the Taliban," he told Reuters in an interview.

The militants were able to overrun most of the country because the Afghan military was poorly trained, Aghbar said.

"And only Panjshir resists, led by Vice President Amrullah Saleh," he said. "Panjshir stands strong against anyone who wants to enslave people."

Aghbar said, however, the Taliban could potentially become part of a coalition government that would represent all Afghan factions if they "let others live in peace and accord".

Ghani is in the United Arab Emirates, the Gulf state's foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

A resolution was tabled in the lower house of the Parliament on Tuesday for the expulsion of the French ambassador from Pakistan over the issue of blasphemous cartoons being published in the European country.&nbsp;

The resolution condemned the publication of blasphemous caricatures by French magazine Charlie Hebdo in September last year and expressed regret over the French's president 'encouragement of the elements hurting the sentiments of the hundreds of millions of Muslims in the name of freedom of expression'.&nbsp;

"The House condemns the publication of insulting sketches by the controversial French magazine Charlie Hebdo and Muslims around the world had also expressed outrage at the publication of the sketches," the resolution added.&nbsp;

It stated that a debate should be held in the House on the expulsion of the French ambassador from Pakistan over the issue of caricatures.&nbsp;

"This House also demands that the state should decide matters of international relations and no person, group or party can exert unnecessary illegal pressure," according to the resolution.&nbsp;

It also said that all European countries in general and France in particular should be made aware of the seriousness of this issue of blasphemy. The resolution said that the issue should be raised collectively on international forums while discussing the issue with all Muslim countries.&nbsp;

The main Opposition Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) attended the session but the Pakistan People's Party boycotted it.&nbsp;

The Philippine government summoned the Chinese ambassador to press its demand for Chinese vessels to immediately leave a reef claimed by Manila in the South China Sea and said their presence was stoking tensions, officials said on Tuesday.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Nilambar Acharya, Nepal's former law minister, has been appointed as the country's ambassador to India, a position that was vacant since October 2017.&nbsp;

The position of the Nepalese ambassador to India was vacant for more than a year after Deep Kumar Upadhyay resigned to join politics.&nbsp;

President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Sunday administered an oath of office to Acharya at the Rashtrapati Bhawan at Sheetal Niwas.&nbsp;

Bhandari congratulated Acharya for being an ambassador to a very close neighbour of Nepal.

Acharya is the first Nepalese ambassador to take an oath of office and secrecy from the president under a new provision.

Earlier, ambassadors were administered an oath of office by Supreme Court chief justice.

A Moscow University graduate, Acharya was initially left-leaning but later joined the Nepali Congress party.&nbsp;

He was minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and Labour and Social Welfare in the interim government of 1990.&nbsp;

Foreign policy experts here say that Acharya faces huge challenges as he takes up his diplomatic assignment next month as the first envoy to New Delhi since the 2015 blockade after of the promulgation of the new Constitution in Nepal that had strained bilateral ties, The Kathmandu Post reported.

Nepal had blamed India for the blockade. India has denied the allegations, stating the shortage of essential supplies was caused by the unrest in the country due to Madheshi protests.

Canada urged<a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/china-court-sentences-canadian-to-death-as-diplomatic-row-deepens-190320"> Beijing</a> on Tuesday to grant clemency to a Canadian sentenced to death for drug trafficking after his sentence reignited a diplomatic dispute that began last month.

Ottawa has warned its citizens about the risk of "arbitrary enforcement" of laws in China following a court's sentencing of Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, 36, to death on Monday, increasing a previous 15-year prison term.

The sentence came during a clash between Ottawa and Beijing over Canada's arrest in December of Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of telecom giant Huawei, on a US extradition request related to Iran sanctions violations.

"We have already spoken with China's ambassador to Canada and requested clemency" for Schellenberg, Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland told reporters in Sainte-Hyacinthe, Quebec.

Earlier, Beijing said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had made "irresponsible remarks" for saying China chose to "arbitrarily apply" death penalties. 
Freeland recalled Canada's long-standing opposition to capital punishment.

"We believe it is inhumane and inappropriate, and wherever the death penalty is considered with regard to a Canadian we speak out against it," she said.

In a move observers see as retaliation over the Huawei case, Chinese authorities detained two other Canadian citizens -- a former diplomat and a business consultant -- on suspicion of endangering national security. 
The timing and swiftness of Schellenberg's sentence and the inclusion of new evidence raised suspicion among observers.

Human Rights Watch executive director Kenneth Roth said China was "playing hostage politics."&nbsp;

In response to Canada's travel advisory on China, Beijing issued a similar response, urging its nationals to "travel cautiously."&nbsp;

From Bhishma being pinned by Arjuna’s arrows to vicious detailing of the 18-day battle adorn the walls of the complex.&nbsp;

The churning of the sea details both Sheshnag and Hanuman involved in the celestial exercise to make ‘devtas’ immortal.

There are abandoned temples, huge where once Lord Shiva was worshipped whom the people in Cambodia also call Rudra.

Though Narsimha avatar is a tale which people know across North India as a fight between a devotee called Prahlad, his daitya father Hirnakashyap and Narsimha avatar of Vishnu.&nbsp;

It is only in South India one finds temples of Narsimha avatar and not in the North India. But you re-discover this tale in Angkor Wat.

The city was also known as Param Vishnu Lok before the Kings of Cambodia converted to Buddhism.&nbsp;

Hinduism as a religion is not a political force today but it is still of daily life.&nbsp;

Whether it is Ravan, Nandi or Bhakta Hanuman, they all co-exist with Buddhist influences. Cambodians are more aware of this heritage than many Indians.&nbsp;

Both these late ancient monuments show the power of India’s two most important epics which shaped many parts of the world. Both these tales continue to shape Indian politics and culture.

Walking around the late ancient temple complexes reminded me of Ayodhya in Faizabad.&nbsp;

Many Indians today can only relate Ayodhya to the birth place of Lord Ram.&nbsp;

That is one aspect of the city. It was also culturally influenced by both Jainism and Buddhism tremendously.&nbsp;

This has done great harm to India and Hinduism as it undermines rich cultural history.

In Siem Reap both Buddhist and Hindu influences have been illustrated for tourists.&nbsp;

The complex is clean and neat and habit of not littering is encouraged.&nbsp;

Ayodhya on the other hand is gifted with an infrastructure which only exists on papers. That should change.&nbsp;

I do not think that by erecting a tall statue of Lord Ram would change anything.

Some parts of the temple complex in Siem Reap have been maintained and restored by the ASI.&nbsp;

It makes one proud that we have contributed in keeping alive, India’s cultural contribution abroad.&nbsp;

Today BJP is fighting over the birth place of Ram in Ayodhya.&nbsp;

Today, the battle lies in the Supreme Court, but the true message is lost in the bitter political contest. God can be discovered, remembered and felt anywhere in the world. I found him in Siem Reap.

Rihanna is now Ambassador Rihanna after her home country tasked her with promoting investment and tourism.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley said that Rihanna -- real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty -- has been conferred the title of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary.

While the singer will not be formally accredited to another country, Mottley said that Rihanna -- whose more colourful songs include "Bitch Better Have My Money" -- would be in charge of bringing investment as well as encouraging education and tourism.

"I couldn't be more proud to take on such a prestigious title in my home country. Every Barbadian is going to have to play their role in this current effort, and I'm ready and excited to take on the responsibility," Rihanna said in a statement dated Thursday.

Rihanna, 30, grew up in a troubled home in Barbados and was propelled to fame after visiting US producer Evan Rogers recognized her talents.
