Covid pandemic has cost us a lot more than we think, this time it comes in a form of heavy penalty and fines for an Indian airline - Air India. US has ordered Tata Group to pay the repetitions over of $121.5 million.

World Business Watch: Air India slapped with $121.5 mn fine for delay in refunds

The US Department of Transportation said this week that the airlines have paid more than $600 million in refunds to hundreds of thousands of passengers for cancelled or changed flights since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The development comes as airlines continue to struggle to keep up with a rapid rise in demand for travel via air.

For "extreme delays in providing refunds to passengers", the department is also issuing $7.25 million against six airlines, including Air India. The Tata-owned airline paid $121.5 million in required funds and a $1.4 million penalty.

In addition to the more than $600 million in refunds that the airlines have paid back, the Department of Transportation is also assessing more than $7.25 million in civil penalties against six airlines for extreme delays in providing refunds.

Majority fines on foreign carriers

Except for Denver-based Frontier Airlines, all other airlines facing the grunt of fines are not headquartered in the US. They include Air India, TAP Portugal, Aeromexico, El Al and Avianca.

Why such hefty fines?

Under U.S. law, airlines and ticket agents have a legal obligation to refund consumers if the airline cancels or significantly changes a flight to, from and within the United States, and the passenger does not wish to accept the alternative offered. It is unlawful for an airline to refuse refunds and instead provide vouchers to such consumers.

United States: Airlines, including Air India, forced to pay $600 million in refunds

Singapore Airlines (SIA) Ltd is in “confidential talks” with the Tata Group over the potential integration of Vistara, whose 49 per cent equity is held by SIA, and Air India to help the Singaporean carrier gain a stronger foothold in India and South Asia.

SIA in a statement further said that the talks were ongoing and no “definitive agreements” have been reached on the potential integration between the two parties.

"In line with its multi-hub strategy, SIA is currently in confidential discussions with Tata to explore a potential transaction in relation to the securities of Vistara and Air India Ltd, a subsidiary of Tata (the 'potential transaction').”

"The discussions seek to deepen the existing partnership between SIA and Tata, and may include a potential integration of Vistara and Air India," it said in a statement.

The aviation company said that it will make the necessary announcements “when there are any material developments regarding the potential transaction in compliance with the relevant provisions of the Listing Manual of the Singapore Exchange Securities Trading Limited”.

Earlier this month, Singapore civil aviation authorities told WION that they are interested in expanding direct passenger services between the two counties. When asked about the SIA-Air India deal, the official said that it is a "commercial decision".

Singapore Airlines and Scoot, a Singaporean low-cost airline, are restoring their India services to pre-Covid levels. For the next airline season, Air India, Indigo, Go Air and Vistara would be increasing their passenger services to Singapore.

Officials pointed out that during the pre-Covid level, passenger growth was mainly recorded from the secondary cities in India to Singapore.

SIA holds 49 per cent equity in Vistara while the balance 51 per cent equity is held by the Tata Group.

Vistara commenced operations in India on January 9, 2015, and has 50 flights running across the country. The airline's fleet comprises Airbus A320, A320neo, A321neo, Boeing 737 and B787.

The discussions come at a time when Air India has been looking to rebuild its fleet and target a domestic market share of at least 30 per cent over the next five years.

Who is Ripudaman Singh Malik? Acquitted suspect in 1985 Air India bombing shot dead in Canada

The word 'Indigo' was perhaps a cause of anger and even outright revolt against East India Company in pre-independence India. A simple Google search would reveal as much. Though it's a little weird to connect the two but what happened on July 2, 2022 is an apparent hark back. This one was not a revolt, everybody would of course have wanted to be politically correct. But the end effect was some company finding it hard to carry out its daily business.

IndiGo, India's largest airline struggled to keep its flights on time. About 55 per cent of the company's flights were delayed.

Reason?

A large number of its cabin crew called in sick. And mass recruitment by Air India appeared to be too obvious for the sudden sickness to seem mere co-incidental.

Sources in India's aviation industry have been quoted in the media reports as saying that there was a fat chance IndiGo employees took a leave to ensure fatter paychecks at Air India recruitment drive.

The phase-2 of Air India's recruitment drive was conducted on Saturday, July 2.

IndiGo, India's largest airline, currently operates approximately 1,600 flights --domestic and international -- daily.

News agency Press Trust of India said IndiGo and Air India did not respond to its requests for statements.

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation's website, 45.2 per cent of IndiGo's domestic flights operated on time on Saturday.

In comparison, the on-time performances of Air India, SpiceJet, Vistara, Go First and AirAsia India was 77.1 per cent, 80.4 per cent, 86.3 per cent, 88 per cent and 92.3 per cent, respectively, on Saturday.

IndiGo CEO Ronjoy Dutta had on April 8 told employees through an email that raising salaries is a difficult and thorny issue but the airline will constantly review and adjust wages based on its profitability and the competitive environment.

IndiGo had on April 4 suspended a few pilots who were planning to organise a strike the next day to protest against the pay cuts that were implemented during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Tata Group took control of Air India on January 27, after successfully winning the bid for the airline on October 8 last year. Air India plans to buy new planes and improve its services, and it recently started a recruitment drive for fresh cabin crew members.

India: Tata's Air India holds walk-in interviews, rival IndiGo's crew goes into 'mass leave'

In what could be the biggest order in the history of aviation, India's Air India owned by Tata Group is planning to give a massive order of 300 planes as per recent reports.

Report: Air India considers buying 300 planes

Tata-owned Air India is considering ordering nearly 300 narrowbody jets, which may potentially become one of the most significant orders in the history of commercial aviation, as the airline plans to expand its fleet under new ownership, reported Bloomberg.

Bloomberg quoted an anonymous source who claimed that Air India might order Airbus SE's A320neo family jets, Boeing Co.'s 737 Max models, or a mix of both. Even though discounts are typical during such large purchases, a deal for 300 737 Max-10 jets could be approximately worth $40.5 billion.

Since Airbus commonly dominates the skies in India, Boeing winning a narrowbody order will be a massive triumph for the manufacturer. In the world's fastest-growing aviation market before the pandemic, airlines such as IndiGo, operated by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd is the world's largest customers for Airbus best-selling narrowbodies, ordering more than 700, along with others including Vistara, Go Airlines India Ltd. and AirAsia India Ltd. who fly planes from the same European manufacturer.

Three hundred planes will take several years or even decades to produce and deliver. Airbus builds close to 50 aircraft in a month and plans to increase production to 65 per month by 2023 and then to 75 in a month by 2025.

Although Air India and Boeing representatives have declined to comment on the matter, a representative from Airbus told Bloomberg that their company is always in contact with existing and potential customers, but their discussions remain confidential.

Bloomberg quoted Satyendra Pandey, managing partner of aviation advisory firm AT-TV claiming, "This order presumably involves new methods of financing to play out in the right manner, including factoring in macroeconomic trends, notably the fluctuating rupee and rising inflation."

"Some airlines have placed voluminous orders only to find that they are unable to line up financing at favorable terms. While it is not an outcome that one envisions and certainly not with a group such as the Tatas, nevertheless, it has to be planned for," added Pandey.

Bloomberg News previously reported that Air India's owner Tata Group is in close talks with Airbus for an order of the A350 long-range jets that have the capacity of flying as far as the US West Coast from New Delhi.

Although Air India still holds gainful landing spots in the country, the airline faces huge competition from international players providing nonstop services to India and even airlines that fly via hubs in the Middle Eastern countries.

The purchase of Air India by Tata was one of the most high-profile privatization under the Modi government earlier this year. Tata is expected to consolidate its aviation businesses which justifies such a large order for new planes, allowing it to cut costs and compete better with rivals offering cheap fares.

Tata-owned Air India set to make one of the largest aircraft deals in history

The Tata Group-owned Air India has decided to procure its maiden batch of wide-bodied A350 aircraft of Airbus and the first plane is likely to be delivered to the airline by March 2023, sources have said.

However, it was not immediately clear how many A350 aircraft will be purchased by Air India.

Air India has not bought a single aircraft since 2006 when it had placed orders for purchasing 111 aircraft, 68 from the US-based aircraft manufacturer Boeing and 43 from European aircraft manufacturer Airbus.

A wide-bodied plane like Airbus A350 has a bigger fuel tank that allows it to travel longer distances such as India-US routes.

The Tata Group took control of Air India on January 27 after successfully winning the bid for the airline on October 8 last year.

Sources on Wednesday said Air India has started asking its senior pilots if they will be interested in getting the "conversion training" to operate A350 aircraft.

Air India's pilots are trained to operate the wide-bodied aircraft of Boeing. Therefore, they have to undergo "conversion training" to operate A350 aircraft of Airbus.

Air India plane engine shuts mid-air, makes emergency landing in Mumbai

As per a revised set of guidelines issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Air India will no longer enjoy a priority in the allocation of international traffic rights.

The move comes after Tata Sons took control of Air India from the government. In the revised guidelines issued on April 19, DGCA apparently removed a clause that gave the airline advantage over other private carriers.

The deleted clause stated: "Due consideration shall be given to operational plans submitted by Air India before allocation of the traffic rights to other eligible applicants."

On January 27, the Tata Group took full control of the airline as it landed back in the hands of its founders decades after it was nationalised. The strategic disinvestment transaction was concluded after years as a burden on the public purse.

Meanwhile, the latest move means, it is now equal for all the airlines for the allocation of traffic rights.

The fresh circular read: "The central government may at its discretion grant or deny allocation of traffic rights to any air transport undertaking having regard to its preparedness to undertake such operations, viability of the operations on a particular route, overall interests of the civil aviation sector etc."

During a last-minute announcement before the evacuation flight took off from Bucharest, he said, "I know you have come through a very long and arduous road journey. So the last thing in your mind is an announcement by an ambassador. You are in the last leg of the journey back home where your friend and families will be waiting with an open arm... Remember your friends who are still here. And when you talk to your friends who are still waiting for the evacuation, you should tell them, assure them that the entire government of India team is working day and night to evacuate everyone. And our mission is not complete until we take the last Indian out of Ukraine."

There is a war-like situation in eastern Europe after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the launch of a military operation against Ukraine on Thursday (February 24). In the aftermath, Ukrainian authorities closed the airspace to civilian flights citing a high risk to safety. Europe's aviation regulator also warned against the dangers to aircraft flying in bordering areas of Russia and Belarus, because of the increased military activities. Ukraine State Air Traffic Services Enterprise said the country's airspace was closed to civilian flights starting from 0045 GMT on Thursday, with air traffic services suspended. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said airspace in Russia and Belarus within 100 nautical miles of their borders with Ukraine could also pose safety risks. The agency said in a conflict zone bulletin, "In particular, there is a risk of both intentional targeting and misidentification of civil aircraft." It added, "The presence and possible use of a wide range of ground and airborne warfare systems poses a high risk for civil flights operating at all altitudes and flight levels." Before the suspension was announced, Britain, Canada, France, Italy and the United States had told their airlines to avoid certain airspace above eastern Ukraine and Crimea. Air India's special flight returned mid-air A special Air India flight returning from mid-air as Ukraine airspace is closed due to notice to airmen (NOTAM) as war has been started between Russia and Ukraine. India-based news agency ANI reported citing sources that an empty flight of Air India AI-1947 is returning from over Iran air space as Ukraine imposed restrictions on civilian aircraft. "Air India flight AI1947 is coming back to Delhi due to NOTAM at, Kyiv, Ukraine," Air India informed. Notice to airmen (NOTAM), is a notice filed with an aviation authority to alert aircraft pilots of potential hazards along a flight route or at a location that could affect the flight. Air India is scheduled to operate a second special flight for Ukraine to bring back stranded Indian citizens. WATCH: Russia Ukraine conflict: Ukraine urges UN to do everything to stop war ×

Russia-Ukraine crisis: Air India to operate three flights to help Indian citizens fly out

According to reports, Air India's Srinagar-Delhi flight was held up for up to an hour at Srinagar airport allegedly due to an altercation between a senior Air India pilot and an aircraft maintenance engineer.

The pilot has reportedly complained to airline management. The controversy erupted after the pilot reportedly informed the ground staff that there was an "imbalance" of 1400 kg of fuel.

Fuel imbalance occurs when the fuel in both wings of the aircraft is not filled equally due to which the plane is not allowed to fly, according to the rules.

The issue was finally resolved after another engineer addressed the issue and balanced the fuel in both wings as the Air India flight AI 826 took off after an hour. The pilot has reportedly complained about the engineer's "high headed behaviour".

Air India flight held up due to altercation between pilot and engineer: Report

The Indian government handed over Air India to the Tata Group on January 27, nearly 69 years after it was taken from the conglomerate.

Air India handed over to TATA Group, chairman meets PM Modi

After 69 long years, India’s national carrier Air India was officially handed over to Tata Group on Thursday.

N Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Tata Sons—who control the entire Tata conglomerate—called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi earlier in the day ahead of the official handover.

However, even before the new and revamped airline takes off, the company seems to have already taken various measures to make the airline competitive again.

Part of this makeover includes making the cabin crew “well-groomed” and presentable to the passengers. And one way to make sure that the staff look good is to check their weight.

According to reports, Air India is planning to check the body mass index (BMI) of its cabin crew, as well as their overall grooming and appearance.

The order dated January 20, 2022, states that “grooming associates” have been assigned to record the BMI of cabin crew when they report for flight

“These observations must be compiled and sent to my office,” Vasudha Chandana, Executive Director —In-flight Services, Air India, said in the order to all cabin crew members.

Each cabin crew shall be observed or assessed once on a quarterly basis, she noted.

But the order drew flak from the worker unions who deemed the missive as “dehumanising”.

The carrier's two unions —Air India Employees' Union (AIEU) and All India Cabin Crew Association (AICCA) —on Monday wrote a letter to Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Vikram Dev Dutt opposing the order on the grounds that it is dehumanising and in violation of rules prescribed by aviation regulator DGCA.

The AICCA has also threatened to seek legal recourse if the said requirement on BMI/weight checks by grooming associates is not withdrawn.

Among the other measures taken by the Tata management includes flight announcements addressing passengers as ‘Guests’, and a recorded message of Ratan Tata to be played in each and every flight.

The Tata group already has announced an ‘enhanced meal service’ in Air India’s four flights, namely AI864 Mumbai-Delhi, AI687 Mumbai-Delhi, AI945 Mumbai-Abu Dhabi and AI639 Mumbai-Bengaluru from January 27 only. This will be expanded in other flights and routes in a phased manner.

In October last year, Tata Group announced the winning bidder for Air India with a bid amount of Rs 18,000 crore. Tatas would pay Rs 2,700 crore cash and takeover Rs 15,300 crore of the airline's debt.

Tata takes over Air India. What does it mean for air hostesses?

Set to take over Air India from the Indian government, the Tata Group has taken first step towards managing the carrier by introducing "enhanced meal service" on four flights that will operate from Mumbai today (January 27) onwards.

The "enhanced meal service" will be provided on four flights -- AI864 (Mumbai-Delhi), AI687 (Mumbai-Delhi), AI945 (Mumbai-Abu Dhabi) and AI639 (Mumbai-Bengaluru) -- on Thursday. The takeover will take place after Thursday, as per officials.

After a competitive bidding process, the government had on October 8 last year sold Air India to Talace Private Limited -- a subsidiary of the Tata Group's holding company -- for Rs 18,000 crore.

The officials said the new date from which all Air India flights will fly under "Tata Group's banner or aegis" will be told to the employees later.

The "enhanced meal service" will be served on Mumbai-Newark flight and five Mumbai-Delhi flights on Friday, they noted.

The "enhanced meal service" -- devised by the Tata Group officials -- will be expanded to more flights in a staggered and phased manner, the officials added.

News agency IANS on Thursday quoted highly placed sources to say that Chairman of Tata Group N. Chandrasekaran was in national capital to meet key Central government officials before the formal handing over ceremony.

Earlier this week, in a communication to the airlines employees, a senior Air India official wrote: "The disinvestment of Air India is now decided to be on January 27, 2022.

"The closing balance sheet as on January 20 has to be provided today, i.e., January 24, so that it can be reviewed by Tatas and any changes can be effected on Wednesday."

The communication, which was reviewed by IANS, was sent to the employees by Director of Finance, Vinod Hejmadi.

The communication further read: "The next three days will be hectic for our department and I request all of you to give your best in these last three-four days before we get divested. We may have to work till late in the night to complete the task given to us."

Last month, the Competition Commission of India approved the acquisition of Air India, Air India Express and Air India SATS Airport Services by Talace, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Sons.

Air India resumes flight operations to US after 5G disruption

There's been another wave of Covid19 infections across India driven by the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus, and this, of course, had a serious impact on India's aviation sector.

World Business Watch: Air passengers numbers in India decline

2021 started with hope for the aviation sector but the same can't be said about its end. At the beginning of the year, India had just begun coming out of months-long lockdowns and there were hopes for the rest of the year, but the year has not turned out to be as good as it could have been. Cautiously optimistic, that's how the aviation industry's approach in 2021 can be defined. Apart from many flip-flops the only definitive thing that can be said about 2021 is that the year will be remembered as the year in which the much-awaited sale of Air India took-off. Tatas have become the new owner of Air India and the changes will be clear in due course of time in 2022. The world is staring at uncertainty once again as Omicron virus concerns have engulfed the world.

WAIT FOR THE INTERNATIONAL HOLIDAYS CONTINUES

The hopes for the year-end international holidays were rekindled when aviation India's aviation ministry decided to open international flights from Dec 15 but these hopes were quickly dashed to the ground and wait for the international holidays just got a little longer. There was a ray of hope with the announcement that international flights would start from Dec 15, but international flight ban was soon extended till Jan 31, 2022, in light of the Omicron scare. The news would otherwise have brought cheer to the global aviation players and those who were planning international holidays.

SALE OF 'MAHARAJA'

After much delay and deliberations, Air India was finally sold off to the Tata Group, the former owners, and founders of the airline. In 2022, Air India is likely to be visible in a new Avatar, donning new cap and shouldering the expectations of better service.

DUBAI AIR SHOW

Dubai's biennial Air Show kicked off in style on November 14 after a gap of two years. At the airshow which was held under the shadow of Covid-19, India's Tejas fighter aircraft enthralled the spectators at Al Maktoum airport, a second and smaller international hub to Dubai's main airport. The airshow raked in $78 billion in secured or announced commercial and military deals during the five-day event in November.

100% DOMESTIC CAPACITY

The airlines that started with partial resumption of flights were allowed to resume 100 percent capacity. From October 18 the airlines were able to resume 100 percent capacity. The restrictions were imposed after airlines resumed operations after a complete shut down in mid-2020. However, the civil aviation ministry is yet to remove the full-fare caps.

2022: HEADWINDS AND TAILWINDS

The year 2022 is starting on a sombre note. The skies are still hazy with new concerns about the Covid-19 Omicron variant and flights cancellations have already begun. Airlines are once again predicting heavy losses. Ryanair, the Irish airline and Europe’s largest by passenger numbers, has more than doubled its annual loss forecast for current financial year.

Yet in countries like India the new year appears to be promising with two new airlines including Akasa ready to take-off and there is possibility of Jet Airways getting new wings. Also, Air India with a new owner will be seen in a new form with some services aimed at winning the trust of customers. Also on the horizon are the concerns about the rising crude prices. From the level of $80 to a barrel currently, crude prices can touch $100 next year giving sleepless nights to the airlines and the overall aviation world.

A mountaineer has finally received his share of reward for the treasure he found eight years ago from the debris of two Indian planes that had crashed into Mont Blanc in 1950 and in 1966.

The treasure, including emeralds, rubies and sapphires, had remained hidden in a metal box that was onboard one of the two Air India planes that had crashed into Mont Blanc in 1950 and then in 1966.

Since the crash, mountaineers have often discovered baggage, debris, papers and sometimes human remains too from the two crashed Air India flights. This mountaineer stumbled upon a metal box in 2013 and realised there were precious stones in the box.

Experts believe these stones were onboard the 1966 flight which was taking nearly 117 passengers from Mumbai to New York. The flight, Boeing 707, had crashed on the south-west side of Mont Blanc on January 24, 1966. All 117 people onboard, including India's nuclear programme expert, Homi Jehangir Bhabha, were killed in this crash.

When the mountaineer found these precious stones, he informed the authorities and claims he does not "regret having been honest". Now, eight years after his find, he was told that the treasure will finally be shared with him this year.
