The Taliban have put up posters in Kandahar that say that Muslim women who don't wear Hijab are 'trying to look like animals'. The posters have been put up by Taliban's religious police.

Women's rights in Afghanistan saw marginal improvement in two decades after 9/11. But these marginal gains are increasingly being rolled back under Taliban regime.

In May, the country's supreme leader and Taliban chief Hibatullah Akhundzada approved a decree saying women should generally stay at home.

They were ordered to cover themselves completely, including their faces, should they need to go out in public.

This week, the Taliban's feared Ministry for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, which enforces the group's strict interpretation of Islam, put up posters across Kandahar city showing images of burqas, a type of garment that covers a woman's body from head to toe.

Women without hijab 'trying to look like animals', read Taliban posters

The illegal narcotics trade constitutes one of the main financial sources of the insurgency groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but, more importantly, it feeds narco-terror. The American withdrawal in 2021 means that the countries of the region will have to play a greater role in the management of their borders and confront questions about their capacity to stop potentially destabilising trends emerging from Afghanistan, reported the Afghan Diaspora Network.

Heroin networks and drug lords present a principal impediment to security, state-building, and democratic governance. Beyond the national boundaries, Afghan-originated heroin creates enormous challenges for international security by financing terrorism, instigating corruption, killing nearly 100,000 users worldwide every year, undermining public order, and debilitating economic development.

The devastating impacts of the Afghan heroin trade have spilled over into Southwest Asia, Central Asia, Russia, China, the Balkans, and Europe.The Taliban have long used narcotics as their main source of revenue. Without the poppy crop, they may never have grown to be the massive organisation that they are today that was capable of toppling the Ghani government, reported the Afghan Diaspora Network.

According to the Narco-Insecurity, Inc.s report, The Convergence of the Narcotics Underworld and Extremists in Afghanistan and Pakistan and Their Global Proliferation, this was made possible with the help of Pakistan's ISI, who launched several covert operations with sympathetic jihadist groups, all of whom relied heavily on narcotics trafficking to fund their operations, expanding the trafficking route even further through their regions, launching the Balkan, northern, and southern routes of the global narco-trafficking pipeline.

The most substantial of these was the Haqqani network, a criminal enterprise situated along the Afghanistan/Pakistan border that was founded on smuggling. The ISI saw the Haqqani network as a key ally, given their location and alliances with numerous jihadist groups, and began investing in their bases while using them as a proxy for engagement with other non-state actors.

A vicious cycle has formed between insecurity and the opium economy. Insecure regions are fertile territory for poppy farming due to a lack of government oversight and a lack of alternative livelihoods. They both attract insurgent groups, who profit off of the opium industry at multiple levels of the supply chain and are created by insurgent groups.

Since the recent Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, there has been a knock-on effect on the global narcotics industry. Counter narcotics efforts will need to shift to operate under a new paradigm where direct counter-narcotics efforts in Afghanistan are unlikely to continue.

Vicious cycle of Pakistan's insecurity, Afghanistan's opium trade converges to narco-terror

Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan almost a year ago, the nation has witnessed a slew of tough times. There have been countless news stories about the abysmal state of women's rights and for good reason. However, one facet of the nation's demise has largely gone unnoticed: the fall of the watchdogs of society.

Recently, a tweet shed some light on the condition of journalists in Taliban's Afghanistan. Kabir Haqmal who once worked with the Hamid Karzai government tweeted out pictures of a street food vendor, who he identified as a former news anchor, reporter Musa Mohammadi. He said that after the Taliban's rise to power Musa has been forced into poverty.&nbsp;

Posting Musa's pictures from his 'good old days' when he worked as a news anchor and recent ones where he can be seen selling food on Afghanistan streets, Haqmal wrote "Journalists life in #Afghanistan under the #Taliban. Musa Mohammadi worked for years as an anchor &amp; reporter in different TV channels, and now has no income to feed his family. &amp; sells street food to earn some money. #Afghans suffer unprecedented poverty after the fall of the republic."

The tweet has garnered hundreds of likes and retweets since it was shared. It even reached Ahmadullah Wasiq, the Director-General of National Radio and Television and the acting director for intelligence and deputy head of the cultural commission of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

Wasiq responded by tweeting in Urdu that Musa will be given employment "within the framework of National Radio and Television".&nbsp;

His tweet can be roughly translated as "Unemployment of Musa Mohammadi, a spokesman for a private television station, rises on social media. As a matter of fact, as the director of the National Radio and Television, I assure him that we will appoint him within the framework of the National Radio and Television. We need all Afghan professionals."

While Haqmal's tweet may have acted as a saviour for Musa, this begs the question: What about the rest?

There are undoubtedly more journalists and professionals from other fields paying the price for this change in administration. Who will help them?

According to a World Bank report, in Afghanistan incomes have plummeted to the point where 37 per cent of Afghan households do not have enough money to fulfil their basic needs, while 33 per cent can afford food but not much else.

Reuters reported that as World Bank estimates if present trends persist, Afghanistan's real GDP per capita would fall by roughly 34 per cent between the end of 2020 and the end of 2022, reversing all progress made since 2007.

Leading the resistance movement in Panjshir against Taliban, former Afghanistan vice president Amrullah Saleh has shared the detailed account of what happened in the days leading to the fall of Kabul. &nbsp;

Writing the whole account for Daily Mail, the former vice president wrote, the fall of Afghanistan is not only shameful for US President Joe Biden, but also the whole of Western civilisation because everybody knows that Pakistan is running the show. &nbsp;

Saleh wrote that his security guard has been sworn to shoot him twice in the head in case he gets injured as he will never surrender to the Taliban. &nbsp;

The Saleh’s account has come amid the Taliban claims of having captured Panjshir province. Till now, Panjshir was the only Taliban-free province of the country. &nbsp;

There have been several reports of Panjshir residents fleeing their homes and moving to other Taliban-ruled provinces to flee the violence going on in the valley. &nbsp;

Reiterating about the claim of strong Pakistan support to the Taliban, the former vice president wrote the Taliban were receiving instructions from the Pakistan embassy. &nbsp;

"The betrayal of Afghanistan by the West is colossal...Your politicians know that Pakistan is running the show. They know al Qaeda is back in the streets of Kabul. And they know the Taliban have not reformed. They have been displaying their suicide vests in Kabul," he wrote. &nbsp;

On the day Kabul fell, Amrullah Saleh woke up to numerous calls from family and friends. Saleh says his efforts to reach the minister of defence and the interior minister and their deputies failed as they were not reachable. Kabul’s police chief informed him, he could hold the front for an hour. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Saleh wrote, "But in that one desperate hour, I was unable to find deployable Afghan troops anywhere in the city. I messaged our National Security Adviser to say we have to do something. I got no response from anyone. And by 9am that morning of August 15, Kabul was panicking." &nbsp;

India, US closely watching Pakistan's actions in Afghanistan, says Foreign Secretary Shringla

The US Air Force has decided not to take any disciplinary action against the C-17 aircraft crew that flew out of Kabul airport in Afghanistan during the abrupt and chaotic evacuation of American forces even though human body parts were discovered in the wheel’s well when the plane landed in Qatar.

The inquiry concluded that the crew “acted appropriately” in departing the Hamid Karzai International Airport, Afghanistan, in August 2021.

In a statement released on Monday, they said that the crew used sound judgment "in their decision to get airborne as quickly as possible when faced with an unprecedented and rapidly deteriorating security situation."

"The aircrew's airmanship and quick thinking ensured the safety of the crew and their aircraft. After seeking appropriate care and services to help cope with any trauma from this unprecedented experience, the crew returned to flight status," the US Air Force also said Monday.

On August 16, a day after the Taliban took over Afghanistan and ousted the civilian government, hundreds of people reached the airport to take the US aircraft in a bid to leave the country fearing retribution from the Taliban and the return of fundamental Islamist laws.

Photos and videos from the site revealed desperate citizens running on the airport's tarmac alongside a US Air Force C-17 transport plane. A lot of people were seen clinging onto the plane’s wheels and falling several thousand feet from the air when the plane was airborne.

Taliban assure India to act on Pakistan-based terror groups in Afghanistan: Report

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, the illegal trafficking of Afghan children and the illegal sale and purchase of goods have been on the rise in the region. Due to the hunger and humanitarian crisis, the illegal buying and selling of goods across the border has increased manifold as little children on the Torkham border carrying sacks on their backs and tying them on their shoulders with ropes and running behind the truck have been spotted with Taliban fighters present at the entrance to Afghanistan.

The children, aged between three and 10 years, watch every passing truck so that they can somehow get on board and enter Pakistan, where they could sell goods and buy sugar and flour in return. Meanwhile, border security officials chased trucks carrying children. Four or five-year-old children hiding inside the tyres of these large trucks were pulled out by security officials and sent back to the Afghan border, reported The Frontier Post.

A customs officer said that there are cigarettes, batteries, food items, and some drinks which they give to the locals. However, in return, they get sugar, flour, pulses, etc. "Some of the bags contain illicit drugs and narcotics which these children try to sell cheaply here in Pakistan, but due to strict checking at the Torkham border, these children are caught."&nbsp;

He added that many children die because of accidents due to hiding or hanging in trucks, the Frontier Post quoted, citing the custom agent.Taliban fighters are often seen across the border chasing the children so that they will not cross the gate, but hunger and need have taken away all the fear of those innocent children, the report added. In another statement, a local shopkeeper said, "We are at a loss because we buy and sell goods at full price after paying taxes, but some locals also take advantage of these children by buying cheap goods without paying taxes."He said that it was the responsibility of the international community and human rights organisations to address the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and to take some steps for the education of these children so that they do not resort to illegal means in their livelihood as the Taliban's atrocities have been on an incessant rise in the country and its nearby regions. A customs officer said that the issue is raised at the monthly and weekly meetings of the border management, which are attended by security officials from Pakistan and Afghanistan, The Frontier Post reported. Notably, the situation of human rights in Afghanistan has worsened since the collapse of the Afghan government and the Taliban's return to power in August last year.&nbsp;

Although the fighting in the country has ended, serious human rights violations continue unabated, especially against women and minorities.Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan faced criticism inside and outside Afghanistan for imposing restrictions on women. 2021 has been the worst year for Afghan women as the Taliban, after assuming control of Afghanistan, has rolled back access to their right to education and work. However, they also snatched it later for an indefinite period of time.&nbsp;

The Taliban has imposed draconian restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression, association, assembly, and movement for women and girls. As a result of this, women and girls in Afghanistan are facing a human rights crisis, deprived of the fundamental rights to non-discrimination, education, work, public participation, and health.&nbsp;

The women in the country are staring at a bleak future due to a number of restrictions imposed by the Taliban governing aspects of their lives within ten months of Afghanistan's takeover. Women are no longer allowed to travel unless accompanied by men related to them, and they are being curtailed from wearing make-up as well as their reproductive rights.

A series of deadly blasts, especially targeting minorities, have hit Afghanistan in the past few weeks. The series of explosions and vulnerable security conditions, particularly for minorities, have drawn worldwide condemnation, including from the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), the United States (US), and others.

A US government watchdog said on Monday that Ashraf Ghani, former Aghanistan president almost certainly did not flee the country with millions in cash. It was reported in media after Taliban seized power in Afghanistan that Ghani fled with huge amount of cash just before Taliban toppled his regime.

The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) report, which will be published on Tuesday, is an interim document, as the office is still awaiting answers to questions sent to Ghani.

First reported on by Politico, it interviews witnesses as well as officials who were in the helicopter convoy with Ghani as they hastily fled the Presidential Palace in Kabul while the Taliban marched into the capital on August 15, 2021.

Multiple media reports suggested in the subsequent days that Ghani and other official took about USD 169 million of Afghan government's money as they fled. These claims have been fiercely denied by Ghani.

"Although SIGAR found that some cash was taken from the grounds of the palace and loaded onto these helicopters, evidence indicates that this number did not exceed $1 million and may have been closer in value to $500,000," the report states.

The report makes the assertion based on interviews of witnesses and officials. All of them reportedly said that there were no signs of such large amounts of cash. The helicopters, according to them, were already overloaded with people fleeing for their lives.

"$169 million in hundred dollar bills, stacked end to end, would form a block 7.5 feet (2.3 meters) long, 3 feet wide, and 3 feet tall... This block would have weighed 3,722 pounds, or nearly two tons," SIGAR noted, adding that witnesses reported "minimal luggage" on the helicopters, which had no cargo holds.

Instead one official carried around $200,000, another carried some $240,000 and others had "$5,000 to $10,000 in their pockets... No one had millions," one former senior official told SIGAR.

"If true, this puts the total amount of cash on board the three helicopters at approximately $500,000, with $440,000 belonging to the Afghan government," the report said.

"SIGAR also identified suspicious circumstances in which approximately $5 million in cash was allegedly left behind at the presidential palace," the report added.

It was not clear where the money came from or what it was for, "but it was supposedly divided by members of the Presidential Protective Service after the helicopters departed but before the Taliban captured the palace," it said.

Taliban claims religious and civil rights of all minorities in Afghanistan are protected

The crackle of gunfire. A gasp of a stranger. Explosions rumbling in the distance.&nbsp;In the Afghan capital of Kabul, such sounds would normally prompt panic.&nbsp;

But they are coming from the tinny speaker of a mobile phone clutched by a young man, hunched over and absorbed in the bloody shoot 'em up&nbsp;video&nbsp;game&nbsp;"PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds", or PUBG.

"In this country, we are living but we are not alive," said gamer Abdul Musawir Raufi, after peeling his gaze away from the phone screen, where his avatar duels with other players in an online arena.

"We don't know what will happen from one moment to the next. It's the only way to pass the time," said the 23-year-old.

Afghanistan has been wracked by four decades of very real conflict, now largely subsided since the withdrawal of US-led troops and the return of the Taliban last year.

But in a striking irony, youngsters say the wildly popular virtual violence simulator offers respite from the turmoil of the transition and the strictures of the hardline Islamist regime, as well as a rare channel of communication with the outside world.

Meanwhile, the Taliban -- who spent the past 20 years waging their own vicious and bloody insurgency -- are currently working to cut off access to PUBG, having deemed it a corrupting influence.

End of entertainment

Since storming back to power in August, the Taliban have not curtailed entertainment as harshly as they did during their previous stint in power between 1996 and 2001, when TV, cinema, photography and kite flying were all banned.

In the capital, a few arcades and bowling alleys remain open and some sports are still being played. But music has been banned alongside female-fronted or foreign television series.

Many Kabul residents are wary of the Taliban fighters who patrol the streets and man checkpoints, and prefer to stay at home rather than risk an outing for entertainment.

Raufi was once a keen football player, but most of the friends he played with fled the country during the chaotic mass evacuation in the final days of the international withdrawal.

"The fun we used to have, the laughing with friends... it's all over," he said.

But PUBG, published by Chinese digital giant Tencent and downloaded on mobiles more than a billion times globally, has allowed him to stay in touch with friends and make new connections with foreign players online.

"It allows us to learn about the culture of other countries and their language. The bonds I've created are very strong," he said.

Former student Abdul Mujeeb, 20, has also found refuge in the&nbsp;video&nbsp;game&nbsp;from the spiralling economic crisis that accompanied the Taliban's return.

The United States has seized billions of dollars in Afghan assets, while international aid that propped up the domestic economy has dried up.

That leaves PUBG and TikTok -- the social media&nbsp;video&nbsp;app is also in the crosshairs of Taliban censors -- as "the entertainment we have at home and that keeps us busy", he said.

While mobile games offer an escape, providing a sense of community and boosting mood, the World Health Organization has warned that a small proportion of gamers can develop an addiction, characterised by the increased priority given to logging on to play.

Taliban bans&nbsp;

According to figures from specialist site DataReportal, only 9.2 million Afghans have access to the internet out of a population estimated at 40.2 million.

But Taliban authorities ordered a ban on both PUBG and TikTok in April, accusing them of leading younger generations "astray".

They nonetheless remain accessible.

The issue is currently being discussed with Afghan telecom companies and both apps "will be fully banned in our country", deputy government spokesman Inamullah Samangani told AFP.

Both Raufi and Mujeeb say they will find a way around any ban.

Student Shaheera Ghafori, 19, who plays PUBG like her brother and sister, believes the Taliban "don't have the means" to forbid the&nbsp;game. And she doesn't understand their reasoning.&nbsp;

Shoot 'em up video game a refuge for war-scarred Afghans

Aiming to wipe out the country's massive production of opium and heroin, the Taliban is running a campaign to eradicate poppy cultivation in Afghanistan.

"We are committed to bringing poppy cultivation to zero," said Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Nafi Takor.

It comes after the Taliban issued an edict in early April banning poppy cultivation throughout the country.

Mullah Abdul Haq Akhund, the Taliban deputy interior minister for counternarcotics told The Associated Press in Helmand's provincial capital, Lashkar Gah that those violating the ban "will be arrested and tried according to Sharia laws in relevant courts."

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/gravitas-indian-diplomats-meet-senior-taliban-leadership-484542/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

He said the Taliban were in touch with other governments and non-governmental organizations to work out alternative crops for farmers.

Despite billions of dollars spent by the US trying to stop poppy cultivation, production spiraled over the past 20 years.

Other than being the world's biggest opium producer, Afghanistan is also a major source of heroin in Europe and Asia.

Cut off from international funding in the wake of the Taliban takeover, Afghanistan's economy has collapsed and the ban will likely strike a heavy blow to millions of impoverished farmers and day laborers who rely on proceeds from the crop to survive.

Afghanistan, which has been suffering under its worst drought in years, is facing a humanitarian crisis with most of its population struggling to afford food.

Harvesting opium from the poppies can fetch $300 a month and villagers rely on it to borrow money for staples such as flour, sugar, cooking oil, and heating oil.

According to estimates by the UN's Office on Drugs and Crime, 177,000 hectares (438,000 acres) were planted with poppies in 2021, yielding enough opium to produce up to 650 tons of heroin.

The total value of Afghanistan's opiates production in 2021 was $1.8-$2.7 billion, up to 14 per cent of the country's GDP, exceeding the value of its legal exports, the UNODC said in its most recent report.

A new survey shows that under Taliban rule, the lives of LGBTQ+ people have deteriorated radically. The survey cites cases of gang rape, violence and death threats since the Taliban came to power.

Due to systematic abuses of power and virulent anti-LGBT sentiment, Taliban officials and their supporters have committed crimes against LGBT people with impunity.

Afghanistan has been a dangerous place for LGBT people long before the Taliban took control of the country in August 2021.&nbsp;

Even prior to the Taliban's return to power, LGBT people reported a number of abuses because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.&nbsp;

The country's then-President Ashraf Ghani enacted a law in 2018 that criminalized same-sex sexual relations, and its previous penal code included vague language that was widely interpreted as criminalising same-sex relations.&nbsp;

Yet, as soon as the Taliban, who had ruled the country from 1996 to 2001, regained control, the situation dramatically worsened. Some Taliban leaders vowed to take a hard line against LGBT rights, reaffirming the previous government's criminalisation of same-sex relationships.&nbsp;

“Things were always rough,” said Heather Barr, associate director of the women’s rights division at HRW. “But people had found ways to survive and build community and support each other, and they had hope that things were gradually improving. On 15 August, all of that ended.”

Taliban 'destroying lives' of LGBTQ+ people in Afghanistan: Report

The Pakistani authorities and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have decided to extend the current ceasefire for an indefinite time period till the current peace talks between the two sides that have been going on in Kabul since the start of this month conclude.
&nbsp;
The talks, facilitated by the Afghan Taliban regime, have resulted in the extension of the ceasefire between the forces and the Taliban on two occasions.

Both the parties continue to hold the dialogue and have formed a three-member committee, with representatives from each side to iron out the differences. These talks will be moderated by Haqqani network chief Sirajuddin Haqqani.

A UN report released last week claimed that the TTP was the militant group that benefitted most from the Afghan Taliban’s ascent to power. According to the report, TTP had a strength of about 3,000 to 4,000 fighters in the neighbouring country.

Top United States government officials are in Delhi to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and engage more on the issue of sanctions on Russia in the aftermath of its invasion of Ukraine. The officials are US Special Envoy on Afghanistan, Thomas West, who was on a brief visit to Delhi and has left now, and US Treasury Department's Assistant Secretary Elizabeth Rosenberg, who is currently in India.

In Delhi, Thomas held talks with the Joint Secretary (Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran) in the Ministry of External Affairs, JP Singh. During the talks, India's humanitarian support to the Afghan people was among the key issues on which talks transpired.

New Delhi, earlier this year, started supplying&nbsp;humanitarian aid to the country despite no recognition of the Taliban regime in Kabul. The aid included a gift of&nbsp;50,000 MTs of wheat and vaccines to the people of Afghanistan.

In a tweet, Thomas said, "India is providing critical humanitarian aid, has interests to protect, and brings enormous capability and experience to support the Afghan people." We’ll continue to partner with India and others in the region to advance our shared goals."

Interestingly, during the short visit, Thomas West met Afghanistan's top leader, Dr Abdullah Abdullah. Dr. Abdullah Abdullah is on an India visit, his first visit since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August last year. Assistant Secretary Elizabeth Rosenberg has meetings in Delhi and Mumbai. The key focus of Rosenberg's visit will be to engage with Delhi on US-led sanctions on Russia in the aftermath of its invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;&nbsp;A U.S. Embassy Spokesperson said the visit is part of "continued Treasury efforts to engage with partners and allies around the implementation and enforcement of the unprecedented multilateral sanctions and export controls imposed on Russia for its war against Ukraine."

Rosenberg has helped develop and implement financial and energy sanctions in the past, including the tightening of global sanctions on Iran, the launching of new comprehensive sanctions against Libya and Syria, and the modification of Myanmar sanctions.

Earlier this year, the United States' Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics, Daleep Singh, visited India. The comments did not go well in Delhi, with Indian side many times reminding how top importer of Russian energy remain countries in Europe.
