Today, there was a bomb explosion reportedly close to the Karte Parwan Gurudwara in Kabul. Initial indications indicate that the local Sikh and Hindu community members are safe. The incident happened a month after Islamic State (IS) jihadists invaded the holy site, killing a number of people of colour.

"Members of the Sikh and Hindu communities are reported to be safe. Further details are awaited, "Puneet Singh Chandhok, President of the Indian World Forum, said.&nbsp;

In the attack a month ago, more than a dozen Taliban fighters and Sikhs were murdered.

Violence has been directed at Afghanistan's minority population, which includes Sikhs and Hindus, in addition to others. This is true despite the Taliban government's assertions that it is working to guarantee the protection of non-Muslims in that nation.

About 600 Hindus and Sikhs were in Afghanistan before the Taliban seized power there in August 2021. However, since the Taliban took over in August 2021, this number has significantly decreased.

Afghanistan: Kabul's Karte Parwan gurudwara comes under bomb attack again

Although women never enjoyed their basic rights fully in the recent decades of Afghanistan’s history, the Taliban have extended this inequality and suppression to the maximum extent. It has been more than 300 days that secondary school girls have been prohibited to attend school in Afghanistan. In the same way, the Taliban have shackled many women, who were even the sole breadwinners of families, from going to work and earning money.

Many other restrictions, like the travel ban, forcing hijab-wearing, and prevention of protests are imposed on women all over Afghanistan. All these limitations are instituted in a country where massive poverty, drought, committing suicide, and infectious diseases agonise it overwhelmingly. Nevertheless, observing the Taliban’s susceptibilities, we perceive that their inhumane obstacles and human rights violations not only do not come to an end but rather are expanded day by day.&nbsp;

Considering the above preamble, we ask ourselves why the Taliban and other religious fundamentalist groups have such a position toward women? Where are the roots of this idea? Why does the instrumental view of women not end?&nbsp;

In order to answer the above questions, there is no way but to examine their doctrinal roots. And since a long discussion is beyond the scope of this text, we will recall and explain some brief premises.&nbsp;

Imam Mohammad Ghazali, one of the greatest Muslim scholars, and philosophers determined his stance regarding women and says: The most convincing and solid statement about marriage is that marriage is a form of slavery. A woman is a man's slave, and therefore a woman's duty and responsibility is to obey her husband and respond to his every wish. As the Prophet of Islam himself said, a woman who has satisfied her husband until the time of her death, will go to heaven. &nbsp;(Imam Mohammad Ghazali, Ihya-ul-Alum-uddin, Volume 2, p. 64) … Likewise, Ghazali in Kimiai Saadat says: It is better for women to spin yarn at home, not to call their husband anything but good, and to wear hijab from their husband's acquaintances.&nbsp;

Relying on a kind of religious thought, the Taliban tries to manage all aspects of life, including the education of women, from a certain viewpoint. In this way of thinking, any diversity, including sexual diversity, cannot flourish and realize. They want to build a society based on male authority. Therefore, a kind of patriarchal tendency and insistence on the adaptation of religion-oriented values has been observed in their actions and reactions.&nbsp;

Most philosophers of religion believe that all religions were invented and continued to exist as male-centric. The centrality of men can be examined in the sequence of prophets and religious elites. If we accept this view, we will have a clearer understanding of the Taliban's mentality as a religious-based group in their approach to women.&nbsp;

If we consider religion as a phenomenon, men benefit from the potential pleasure and central position. The Taliban as a religious group are an accurate example to clarify this speculation. The Taliban have appointed an acting government that does not even include a woman. If we assume the inclusion of a woman in this cabinet, at least the consequence of it, according to the Taliban, is moral corruption, the spread of prostitution, and the disrespect of men.&nbsp;

Hannah Arendt, the German philosopher, says: "I am a philosopher, but others don't consider me a philosopher." Indeed, she is considered one of the serious political philosophers of the 20th century; but it was men who thought Arendt’s dignity was lower than being a philosopher because of her being a woman. Not only religious knowledge and philosophy, but basically the production and reproduction of all knowledge and techniques have been monopolized by men since the beginning, and its interpretation has been done in a misogynistic way.&nbsp;

Is there hope?&nbsp;

The author thinks the Taliban still haven't gotten rid of the male-oriented and monopolistic view about freedom, science, education, and society management. According to him, the prevailing view of women is superficial, instrumental, gendered, and dualistic. A duality that considers men to be superior, and women to be inferior. This attitude is a kind of commodity vision of human beings. Like more valuable and less valuable goods. And in this thinking attitude, the woman takes second place. The consequences resulting from this perspective lead to moral degeneration, and the collapse of social norms. As minimum aftermath, it won't be long before a society devoid of moral ideals will emerge, it will overflow and the rapid current will drown it all.&nbsp;

Opinion: The fate of women in the scope of Taliban ideology

After the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, it’s been more than 300 days since the time schools for girls were shut. However, on Saturday (June 23), a foreign ministry spokesman, Qahar Balkhi during an interview with CGTN said, “this suspension is a temporary suspension, and it is not a permanent ban, it has never been called a ban.” As per Tolo News, in defense of the Taliban, the speaker claimed that the closure of schools for girls was due to the conservative attitudes of the majority of Afghans towards women and education. The leader further continued that they are working to find a mutual solution, ANI reported.<o:p></o:p>

As per Balki, the main reason behind the decision was extremely rigid views on women and their capabilities that the majority of the society holds and that the government is attempting to adopt a gradual approach.

Closure of girl’s school in Afghanistan temporary, not permanent, says Taliban

Taliban in Afghanistan has finally released Australian Journalist O'Donnell after an apology. She was detained for her reporting.

Taliban releases Australian Journalist O'Donnell after apology; O'Donnell was detained for her reporting

In a new diktat that seeks to stifle criticism of its regime, the Taliban have warned to punish those who criticise the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” scholars and public servants with a gesture, word or anything else, Voice of America (VOA) reports.

The spokesperson of the Taliban, Zabiullah Mujahid, issued these new “instructions” citing their leader&nbsp;Mullah Hebatullah Akhundzada.&nbsp;It said&nbsp;that the implementation of these so-called guidelines was the “Sharia responsibility” of the people and the media.

The “instructions” also prohibit the public from making unnecessary accusations against Taliban workers and officials.

The so-called instructions come in the backdrop of a spate of arrests and torture of the dissidents who criticised the Taliban for preventing girls’ education and women’s and human rights.

These new directives were published weeks after an Islamic religious scholar from Herat, Mujibur Rahman Ansari, asked the participants at the “Great Meeting of Scholars” in Kabul to issue a fatwa, calling&nbsp;for the beheading of the opponents of the Taliban government.

The guidelines of the Taliban leader mention that such actions amount to “negative propaganda” which “unconsciously helps the enemies”, reported VOA. Though they have not explained who are these “enemies”.

Moreover, if any person “touches any soldier, or pulls his clothes, or says bad things to him”, he will be punished appropriately, the “instructions” of the Taliban leader state.

The Taliban is currently engaged in a skirmish with the self-identified “National Resistance Front”, which has repeatedly accused the fundamentalists of “arresting, killing and injuring civilians”.

Taliban issue new diktat, vow to punish those who criticise ‘Islamic Emirate’

The Taliban rule in Afghanistan continues to make&nbsp;a mockery of humanity. More than a month after Ajmal Haqiqi, a model-YouTuber, along with his three colleagues was arrested by the terrorist outfit, they are being brutally tortured and filmed for voyeuristic pleasures.&nbsp;

Reportedly, a video of Taliban terrorists mercilessly torturing and beating Ajmal with rods has gone viral on social media. It is being reported that the Taliban terrorists filmed the video for ‘fun’ and to share it on their WhatsApp groups.&nbsp;

Ajmal and his friends arrested on charges of Blasphemy

As reported previously by WION,&nbsp;Ajmal and his colleagues have been arrested on charges of Blasphemy, according to the Taliban's General Directorate of Intelligence.

Reportedly, in the controversial video, one of Ajmal’s aides,&nbsp;having a speech impediment, recited a few verses of the Quran in a funny manner. The video was made for humorous purposes and didn’t intend to insult the holy book of Muslims.

Afghan YouTuber assaulted for 'fun' by Taliban terrorists

An Australian journalist, who has been working extensively in Afghanistan for more than 20 years, was detained by the Taliban and was forced to write an apology tweet for writing on the militant groups’ atrocities.

Foreign Policy magazine writer&nbsp;Lynne O’Donnell was held captive for three days after she arrived in Kabul for writing on the plight of women under the Taliban regime and how teenage girls are being used as sex slaves.

Speaking to WION’s correspondent Anas Mallick, O’Donnell, who&nbsp;has now left Afghanistan, revealed what happened on that fateful day and described how this episode left a deep scar on her.

WION: Why did you retract your story?

O’Donnell: I had been detained by people, who told me that they are operatives of the Taliban intelligence agency. They held me for 4 hours and threatened to send me to prison and asked me to make a confession that the reports that I had made for Foreign Policy magazine were fake. When I mentioned who my sources were, they said that they don't exist. I apologised to them, but it was not enough. They wanted me to make my apology public, so they dictated word-by-word to me. After that, they edited and sent them to somebody they called their boss—the superior—who then re-edited and made me send the tweet.

&nbsp;

WION: Do you stand by your story?

O'Donnell: Yes, I do. 100 per cent.

&nbsp;

WION: But the Taliban are accusing you of being an unethical journalist and that you are a foreign agent or a spy. What do you have to say about that?

O’Donnell: One of the people who is accusing me of not being a journalist and for making a faulty report or that I have concocted my source, doesn’t even use his name to&nbsp;represent himself. He is the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He doesn’t use his name, everybody knows that. I am what I am, and I stand by whatever I do.

&nbsp;

WION: How do you see the future of journalism and journalists in Afghanistan, and how essential is it to have voices like yours to be there?

O’Donnell: The Taliban have been muddling the press for longer than they have been in power (since last August), and as they took control of districts and cities, they closed down Afghan media organisations. They detained, beat and killed some journalists, while many fled the country. Some of them are still continuing to function as journalists—writing and reporting on Afghanistan—from outside. That is the only way they can do it with any freedom. And what is happening to those surviving media organisations is that they are second-guessing—unable to work as a journalist. And they know that because media was free and&nbsp;a booming sector before the Taliban came in. There are people who say that journalists in Afghanistan are able to operate and do their job undeterred, but that is not true. I spoke&nbsp;to people, who are independent media monitors,&nbsp;when I was in Kabul, and they told me that they are still doing their work in all 34 Afghan provinces, but they can't publish anymore.

&nbsp;

WION: How much has Afghanistan changed from when you left?

O’Donnell: That is why I wanted to go. I went there to see what’s happening in the country since the Taliban took control. There is no point in pretending that everything was fantastic under the previous elected government—it was a corrupt administration which had no strategy and no leadership. The US decided to withdraw the military support and precipitated the collapse of the government. Since then, the status of women has deteriorated, they are not being allowed to take up jobs, girls are no longer allowed to go to school, and civil society has disappeared. Many people whom I spoke to when I was in Kabul described the prevailing atmosphere as a reign of terror. They are scared to talk. There are parameters, if they cross then they will be in trouble. They just don’t know what are those parameters, and that’s how fear is prevailing.

Japan, Singapore, and South Korea have the world's strongest passports, according to the most recent rankings made public by Henley Passport Index. For the sixth year running, a Japanese passport continues to be the most effective and allows for hassle-free travel into 193 nations. Singapore and South Korea, which are ranked second and third in the most recent Henley Passport Index, respectively, offer access to 192 nations.

What place does India hold?

The 87th-ranked Indian passport offers simple entry to 60 nations. The reopening of international travel has aided in the resilience of passports. After the coronavirus pandemic broke out in March 2020, India had to halt foreign flights in order to stop the spread of covid-19. After two years, the prohibition was ultimately lifted in March of this year.

Taliban officials, who now run Afghanistan’s highest offices, have asked women employees to send male relatives as replacements to take over their jobs. Molly Gambhir tells you more.

WION Fineprint | Taliban to women: Send us a man to do your job

The return of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan was never good news for the country’s women population. Over the years, the Taliban were infamous for their oppressive rules for women and the new regime is trying to implement similar restrictions once again. The finance ministry of the country has asked its female employees to nominate a male relative to work in their place. The women employees were earlier barred from working in public sector jobs and this announcement reasserted the position taken by the government. According to The Guardian, the Taliban sent the female employees home soon after taking power last year and have been paying reduced salaries.

This is the latest decision taken by the Taliban regime which is a painful reminder of how things were in Afghanistan during the early 2000s. In May, the government once again passed a decree on women’s clothing and made it mandatory for male “guardians” to accompany women in public.

An employee of the Afghanistan finance ministry, on the condition of anonymity confirmed the developments to The Guardian and said that the justification given for the exclusion was that the “workload in the office has increased and they need to hire a man instead of us”.

It has been a tough period of time for Afghanistan as the country was rocked by a number of earthquakes and according to the United Nations, a huge portion of its population is currently facing acute hunger after farming was disrupted by the civil war and natural disasters.

Taliban’s atrocities in Afghanistan continue to worsen as the group continues to deny that there are displaced people and had blocked the entry of humanitarian aid into the Bamyan region. According to sources in Bamyan, there are so many displaced people living on the outskirts of the Yakawlang who are in severe need of aid. All of this happened in just ten months after taking control of the country. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. In a big development coming from Afghanistan, reports suggest that UAE and Taliban are going to seal a major deal about who is going to run the Kabul Airport. The announcement is expected within weeks.

Report: UAE to run Kabul Airport | Taliban looks to make allies in Gulf

There has not been any letup in the wanton terror attacks in Afghanistan in the recent past as the Taliban-led Kabul government is expected to complete one year in office on August 15 this year. Most current terror assault happened when the suspected IS (Khorasan-K) terrorists carried out a deadly offensive on June 18 at a Gurudwara in Kabul killing four. Earlier too, Gurudwaras have been under attack by the terrorists in Afghanistan raising the insecurity among the religious minorities particularly the miniscule Sikh population reeling under fear and insecurity. The Taliban officials, however, visited the terror site and assured monetary help for repairs as the Gurudwara precincts were also damaged by the deadly terror strike. The latest offensive is indeed alarming as it is evident that the Taliban has failed to contain the rising attacks by the Khorasan group and emboldened by the laxity, and by the Taliban incompetence, to address the rising incidents of terror targeting the minority community and their places of worship.

Meanwhile, knowledgeable quarters indicate that the IS (K) while claiming the responsibility of the Gurudwara attack, said that it had planned to signal India for the anti-Prophet remarks recently made in India by some BJP leaders leading to a huge outcry in the Islamic world. Experts also believe that IS(K) being linked to Pakistan, does not rule out the possibility from a message emanating from Pakistan to both, India and Afghanistan, to keep off of any emerging thaw between Kabul and New Delhi. This argument, interestingly, is also not denied by security experts in Pakistan and is indeed disturbing. Disturbing, because the new regime in Pakistan was thought to be a shade better than the previous Imran Khan led government and it was expected that the script would now change as far as Indo-Afghan relations were concerned. But the same blueprint seems to remain with the Pakistan ISI, strongly suspected to be in cahoots with IS (K), active in Afghanistan to hit out at India and Afghanistan’s strategic and religious interests. The Kabul Gurudwara attack was a specific pointer towards this.

Importantly, the immediate fallout of this terror attack is also a setback to the Indian plans of reopening its Embassy in Kabul and Consulates in Kandahar, Mazar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad etc. It may be recapitulated, in this context, that it is the Taliban leadership which of late, has been trying to prevail upon India to open its missions in Afghanistan for economic and consular assistance but the recent terror incident has surely put a question mark on such plans. In fact, plans were even afoot by a team of Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to travel to Kabul to finalize the nitty gritty of the launching of the missions but it will now have to wait indefinitely.

Significantly, on its part, acting rather swiftly, the Indian Home Ministry granted emergency visas to 111 Hindus and Sikhs from Afghanistan, hours after June 18 terror attack at the Kabul gurudwara. All had applied for visas in September 2021, but the applications were hastened only after the Islamic State in Khorasan Province (ISKP), attacked the gurudwara and killing four including a Sikh granthi. Crucially, only 159 minorities remain in Afghanistan after the Taliban took control in August 2021, including three members who do not have any passport. The community had been specifically petitioning the government to clear the visas after the ISKP issued threats two weeks ago in retaliation for the controversial statement made against the Prophet. It may be reiterated that though the visas had been pending for months, it was cleared within hours of the attack at the Gurudwara on Saturday. &nbsp;
This terror-related development calls for drawing immediate attention of the Pakistan security establishment to rein in the IS (K) terrorists reminding in them that it has found a breather from the FATF and if it continues to nurture the IS(K) and prompts them to harm interests, it could be further exposed internationally, as a proven terrorist. Such diplomatic efforts on India’s part must put pressure on Pakistan and it’s ISI, to refrain from facilitating terror assaults on Indian interests and religious places minorities. &nbsp;India could possibly use the good offices of some CIS countries, Iran etc. in furtherance of this task.

Further, India should continue to engage Taliban to collaborate with Indian security and intelligence agencies, albeit discreetly, to identify Pakistan’s nefarious designs to foil any plan for future attacks on Hindu/Sikh religious establishments. India also needs to talk from a position of strength and steadily meander its plan to reopen it’s diplomatic setup in the Afghan soil. This will keep Pakistan at bay, enable India to be more watchful of anti-India activities carried out by joint ISI and IS (K) and eventually neutralize those plans by professional operations to safeguard its own security interests. &nbsp;Onslaught on a defenseless gurudwara of killing innocent Sikhs in the pretext of anti-Prophet remarks, is only an excuse. This Pakistani-IS(K) cover needs to be blown and tough measures put in place for integrated security protecting national interests.&nbsp;

Mullah Omar founded the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) in 1994 and served as its first leader until his death in 2013 His death remained concealed until July 2015, during which time the Taliban continued to issue statements in his name.

In the 1980s, Omar joined the Afghan mujahideen in their war against the Soviet Union and the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. He founded the Taliban movement in 1994, and by 1995 had captured much of southern and western Afghanistan. After the Taliban seized the Afghan capital Kabul in September 1996, Omar was proclaimed the head of state of Afghanistan.

Thousands of Afghan clerics vowed to remain loyal to the Taliban following the conclusion of the three-day meeting with top leaders from the hardline Islamist group in Kabul.

The gathering was called in on Saturday to solidify the Taliban's rule to discuss how they wanted the country to be governed. The officials assured to be more receptive to the people’s concerns, saying that criticism would be tolerated and promised to discuss contentious issues such as secondary school education for girls, reports AFP.

Notably, the meeting saw the rare appearance of the Taliban's reclusive supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada.

The Taliban officials present at the ceremony called for allegiance to Akhundzada, loyalty to the group, and the complete acceptance of sharia law as the basic principle of rule.

"By the grace of God, the Islamic system has come to rule in Afghanistan," the declaration read.

"We not only strongly support it, but will also defend it. We consider this to be the national and religious duty of the entire nation."

According to state-run Bakhtar News Agency, the supreme leader warned the foreigners not to interfere in Afghanistan during his rare speech.

He also praised the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan&nbsp;last August, saying, "The success of the Afghan jihad is not only a source of pride for Afghans but also for Muslims all over the world."

Akhundzada added that Afghanistan "cannot develop without being independent."

"Thank God, we are now an independent country. (Foreigners) should not give us their orders, it is our system, and we have our own decisions," he said.

Speaking to the clerics, Akhundzada reaffirmed his commitment to the implementation of Sharia law, Islam's legal system derived from the Quran, while voicing his opposition to the "way of life of non-believers."

Akhundzada is based in Kandahar, the Taliban's birthplace and spiritual heartland. He is rarely photographed in public, a fact that has fuelled rumours over the years that he was sick or possibly dead.

No photographs of Akhundzada attending the meeting, which began in Kabul on Thursday, have been released.

Afghan women activists asserted on Sunday that the Taliban remained illegitimate rulers in spite of endorsement of their hardline rule by thousands of male clerics. These clerics pledged allegiance to the Taliban rule on Saturday following &nbsp;three-day meeting. This meeting failed tio address thorny issue such as right of teenage girls to go to school. Taliban seized power in August last year. The group has sought to present the meeting as vote of confidence.

They insisted last week that women would be represented at the meeting -- attended by over 3,500 men -- but only by their sons and husbands.

"Statements released or pledging allegiance to the Taliban in any gathering or event without the presence of half of the nation's population, the women, are not acceptable," Hoda Khamosh, a rights activist currently in exile in Norway, told AFP.

"This summit... does not have legitimacy, validity, or the approval of the people."

Since seizing power in August last year, the Taliban have imposed a religious regime guided by harsh interpretation of sharia law. This has led to many restrictions on Afghans. Women have been instructed to cover-up from head to toe. Men have been asked to dress in traditional wear and grow beards.

The Taliban have also outlawed playing non-religious music, ordered TV channels to stop showing movies and soaps featuring uncovered women.

A deadly earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has claimed more than 1,000 lives. This was the 50th tremor recorded in the region in the last 5 years. What makes Afghanistan a seismic hotspot? Is there any way to limit the damage from these quakes? Mariam Wardak tells you.

South Asia Diary | Why is Afghanistan prone to earthquakes?

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.1 jolted Afghanistan on June 22, killing more than 1000 people and injuring hundreds. Local and international relief workers rushed to the affected regions but media reports suggest that thousands of people remain with little food, shelter and safe water in the aftermath of the country's deadliest earthquake in decades.&nbsp;

As mentioned by the news agency Reuters, people who are affected by the earthquake in the eastern part of the country are in need of clean water and food. They are apparently at risk of diseases. A UN agency recently warned of a cholera outbreak in the region.&nbsp;

Afghanistan's health ministry spokesperson Sharafat Zaman told news agency Reuters: "The people are extremely needy for food and clean water." Zaman added that the officials had managed medicines for now but handling those who had lost their homes would be a challenge.&nbsp;

As quoted by the news agency, he said: "We ask the international community, humanitarian organisations to help us for food and medicine, the survivor might catch diseases because they don’t have proper houses and shelters for living."&nbsp;

The quake struck about 44 km from the city of Khost, near the Pakistani border, the US Geological Survey (USGC) said. Shaking was felt by about 119 million people in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India, the EMSC said on Twitter.&nbsp;

The quake caused massive damage in the country and the crisis emerged as a major test for Afghanistan's Taliban rulers. After the takeover of the country in August last year, the Taliban regime has isolated itself from much of the world by introducing hardline Islamic rule.&nbsp;
