<p>Notably in September 2000, after years of relative peace along the Line of Actual Control, Beijing under President Jiang Zemin and India under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had started the process of clarifying the Line of Actual Control in the backdrop of India's nuclear tests two years prior.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Donthi points out that when maps were exchanged between the two Asian powers to share their understanding of the Line of Actual Control, they began with the middle sector despite significant differences over Barahoti region of Uttarakhand.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So far, the two militaries have pulled troops, equipment and weapons systems and torn down structures at Patrol Point 14 in the Galwan Valley on the northern shore of Pangong Lake, PP17A near Gogra post and PP15 in Hot Springs area. In each of these locations, agreed buffer zones now physically separate the two militaries.</p>

<p>But disengagement remains incomplete as the two armies continue to face each other at Depsang and Demchok even after twenty rounds of Corps Commander-level talks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Donthi points out that while India would like to see the restoration of the pre-April 2020 status quo, "China seems unwilling", leading to an impasse.</p>

<p>"Due to the forward deployment and building of infrastructure by both sides, it might be difficult to demilitarise the border and restore the status quo ante due to the deepening of distrust to a magnitude not seen since the war of 1962. However, due to the high cost of escalation and the fear of a two-front war on both sides, Beijing and New Delhi would rather find a way out of this deadlock," Donthi added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>More than 50,000 Indian troops remain stationed along the LAC in the Western sector. In Leh, the administrative capital of India's Ladakh which shares boundary with China&nbsp;in the Western Sector, additional troops have been stationed along with three Indian Army divisions traditionally based there.</p>

<p>China has kept over 50,000 troops close to the western sector of the Line of Actual Control since the 2020 clashes and constructed facilities that allow for up to 120,000 soldiers to stay within 100 km of the LAC.</p>

<p>After an exhaustive 70-hour rescue mission in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district, officials expressed optimism that all 40 trapped labourers under a collapsed tunnel will be evacuated by Wednesday (Nov 15). The operation, however, faced setbacks on Tuesday (Nov 14)&nbsp;due to a fresh landslide, triggering a stampede-like situation and injuring two workers.</p>

<p>Over 160 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were mobilised urgently to reach the stranded workers.</p>

<p>To facilitate the evacuation, eight pipes of 900-millimetre diameter and five pipes of 800-millimetre&nbsp;diameter, each six metres long and made of mild steel, have been deployed.</p>

<p>The strategy involves sequentially pushing these pipes through the rubble using drilling equipment, creating a pathway for the trapped workers.</p>

<p>Amid intense clashes between the Chin Defence Force guerrillas and the Myanmar military near the Indo-Myanmar international border, approximately 5,000 refugees,&nbsp;including 39 army personnel, have reportedly sought refuge in northeast Indian state Mizoram’s Champhai area since Sunday night (Nov 12).</p>

<p>The border town of Zokhawthar in India, situated just a few kilometres from the conflict epicentre in Rikhawdar, Myanmar, has become a focal point for the cross-border movement. The Tiau River is the only separation between the two towns.</p>

<p>On Monday (Nov 13), Manipur DGP Anil Shukla confirmed one refugee's death, with around 20 Myanmar nationals hospitalised in Mizoram. These individuals had sustained injuries in Myanmar and crossed the border for medical treatment. By Monday evening, 20 injured people were admitted to the Champhai district hospital, and an additional eight were referred to hospitals in Aizawl.</p>

<p>Despite ongoing efforts, the situation remains volatile, with reported gunfire as late as 6 pm on Monday, according to Robert Zoremtluaga, the chairman of the Local Refugee Relief Committee, who spoke to the Indian Express.</p>

<p>“Everyone from the two villages of Rikhawdar and Khawmami has come to the Indian side. So, the movement of people has stopped for now… Three people who have been injured in Indian territory are people who crossed over to Zokhawthar earlier. One of them has died. He had been living on the Indian side since last year,” he told the Indian Express.&nbsp;</p>
