Wolves forward Matheus Cunha was given a two-match ban on Tuesday after his clash with Ipswich backroom staff following his side's damaging Premier League defeat.
Cunha was seen confronting members of Ipswich's security team in ugly scenes after the final whistle of the Wolves' 2-1 loss to their relegation rivals at Molineux on December 14.
He was reported to have elbowed a member of the Ipswich staff before snatching the man's glasses from his face.
Cunha's teammate Rayan Ait-Nouri was sent off as tempers flared after Jack Taylor bagged Ipswich&rsquo;s winner deep into stoppage time.
Cunha was charged by the Football Association and subsequently admitted the charge.&nbsp;
An independent commission has suspended the Brazilian for Wolves' next two matches and handed out an &pound;80,000 ($100,000) fine.
The FA said written reasons for the commission's sanctioning decision would be published in due course.
The 25-year-old will miss Wolves' Premier League game with Nottingham Forest on Monday and the FA Cup third round trip to Bristol City.

Cunha has arguably been Wolves' standout player, with 10 goals in 19 league games this season.
His absence will be a big blow to Wolves, who are just one place and one point above the relegation zone.
The defeat to Ipswich marked the end of the road for boss Gary O'Neil, who was dismissed and replaced by Portuguese boss Vitor Pereira.

Premier League: Wolves forward Matheus Cunha given two-game ban after Ipswich row

Wayne Rooney's latest managerial flop ended in his abrupt exit from Plymouth after just seven months, extending a streak of dug-out disappointments for England's 'golden generation'.
Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard were among England's most decorated players in an era that brought them remarkable success at club level.
But the trio have largely struggled to replicate their achievements on the pitch since moving into management.
Rooney left the Championship's bottom club on Tuesday in the aftermath of last weekend's damaging 2-0 defeat at relegation rivals Oxford.
The former Manchester United star's host of medals and wealth of experience at the highest level counted for nothing in the cut-throat world of English football's second tier.
Rooney won just four of his 23 league games with Plymouth as he endured another failure in his troubled career as a manager.
The ex-England captain had an 83-day spell at Birmingham last season that brought nine defeats in 15 games and led to the club's relegation from the Championship after his dismissal.
Rooney's managerial journey has been littered with difficulties since it started in turbulent fashion at Derby, where the club's financial issues led to relegation from the Championship in 2022.
Like Rooney, former Chelsea midfielder Lampard is finding the manager's chair an especially hot seat.
The 46-year-old recently took charge at second tier Coventry after failing to find a Premier League club willing to employ him.
Lampard was briefly a rising star as a manager after leading Derby to the Championship play-off final in his first season as a boss.
That convinced Chelsea to bring the prodigal son back to Stamford Bridge in 2019.
He was praised for developing several talented youngsters while the club dealt with a transfer embargo as they finished fourth in the Premier League and reached the FA Cup final in his maiden campaign.
But a disappointing start to his second year meant his status as a Chelsea legend was not enough to spare him from Roman Abramovich's axe in 2021.

<h2>Litany of failure</h2>
Although Lampard saved Everton from relegation in 2022, he was unable to survive at Goodison Park beyond the midway point of the following campaign after another poor run.
Returning to Chelsea as interim boss in 2023 did little for Lampard's tarnished reputation as they won only once in 11 games.
Former Liverpool captain Gerrard was also initially touted as one to watch in the technical area after leading Rangers to their first Scottish title in 10 years in 2021.
Ending Celtic's dominance earned Gerrard a Premier League chance with Aston Villa.
But the 44-year-old struggled badly at Villa Park, finishing 14th in his first season and being sacked in 2022 after winning only two of the opening 12 games of the season.
Gerrard is currently in exile after surprisingly accepting a lucrative offer from Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq in 2023.
Gary Neville and Paul Scholes enjoyed superb playing careers with Manchester United and England, but their brief forays into management were disastrous.
Neville lasted just three months in charge of Spanish side Valencia as a run of three wins from 16 league games prompted his sacking in 2016.
The defender has wisely settled for opining on the failings of other managers since then in his role as an outspoken television pundit.
Scholes resigned citing ownership interference after winning only two of his seven games at fourth tier Oldham in 2019.
Former Chelsea and England defenders John Terry and Ashley Cole have both opted for assistant coaching roles instead of the pressure of management.
David Beckham, who captained England's golden generation, has focused on commercial and business interests since retiring.
Unlike his old team-mates, the former United and England captain is the one doing the sacking as co-owner of MLS franchise Inter Miami.
The 49-year-old even axed his close friend Phil Neville -- a former United and England colleague -- as Miami boss in 2023.
With such a litany of failure on their managerial CVs, it would take a brave owner to turn to one of England's tarnished golden era in the future.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted his team is in a relegation battle after their third consecutive defeat in the Premier League on Monday (Dec 31). United lost 0-2 to Newcastle, meaning the Red Devils will end the year in the bottom half of the table for the first time since the 1988-89 season. After the defeat, the Portuguese gaffer spoke to the presser and admitted his team is in a relegation battle having lost four of the five matches.
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Amorim admits relegation battle</h2>
"We have been speaking about Eriksen and Casemiro on this show 18 months ago. These players can't run. We know that. That is on the manager putting these two players in that position and in that system,&rdquo; Amorim said while speaking to the press in the aftermath of the Newcastle United match.
"But right now it is not just about tonight. United have lost five of their last six. That's relegation form."
Coming into the Newcastle contest, United had lost three of the four Premier League matches, with their only win being the Manchester Derby against City earlier in the month. Alexander Isak scored in the fourth minute before Joelinton added a second goal to his team tally in the 19th minute. Things could have been worse for the Red Devils after Sandro Tonali hit the post before halftime.

At the time of writing, United sit 14th in the Premier League standings and have 22 points from 19 matches, winning only six matches so far. The task will only get tougher for Amorim&rsquo;s side over the weekend as they take on Liverpool at Anfield, having earlier lost the same fixture 0-3 at Old Trafford.
The Reds are flying high at the moment and sit top of the Premier League table with 45 points in 18 matches. Arne Slot&rsquo;s side currently smells blood against United and will head into the contest as heavy favourites to win the match. Tennis: Iga Swiatek romps as Stefanos Tsitsipas crashes at United Cup

Top-ranked chess player Magnus Carlsen confirmed his participation in the World Blitz Championship, on Monday (Dec 30). This happened after the FIDE gave a green signal to relax a dress code that previously led to the Norwegian being fined and excluded from a late-round game in another tournament for refusing to change out of jeans.
Following the controversy, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) President Arkady Dvorkovich stated, on Sunday (Dec 29), that the tournament officials would now consider allowing "appropriate jeans" paired with a jacket and other "elegant minor deviations" from the dress code.

<h2>'The situation was badly mishandled on their side'</h2>
Meanwhile, Carlsen announced in a video on social media that he would compete and don jeans at the World Blitz Championship starting Monday.
The 34-year-old grandmaster said in a video on his Take Take Take chess app's YouTube channel, "I think the situation was badly mishandled on their side.&nbsp;I think we all sort of want the same thing. We want players to feel comfortable but also relatively presentable."
The dispute came into the picture on Friday (Dec 27) when Carlsen wore jeans and a sport coat to the Rapid World Championship. FIDE stated that longstanding rules do not allow players to wear jeans at such tournaments and they are accommodated nearby to facilitate outfit changes if need be.
An official, thus, fined Carlsen $200 while also asking him to change his pants. However, the veteran refused and was consequently not paired for a ninth-round game. In addition, the FIDE noted that earlier in the day, another grandmaster, Russia's Ian Nepomniachtchi, had also breached the rules and fined for donning sports shoes. Nonetheless, the Russians complied with the rules and made the necessary changes to continue playing.&nbsp;
Later, Carlsen explained that he offered to change as well the following day, however, the officials remained resolute. "It became a matter of principle," he stated, leading to his withdrawal from both the rapid and blitz championships.

Novak Djokovic admits planning to keep playing for ‘years to come’

Justin Herbert threw three touchdowns as the Los Angeles Chargers booked an NFL playoff berth with a 40-7 win at the New England Patriots on Saturday. <o:p></o:p>But the Denver Broncos' hopes of joining the Chargers in the post-season suffered a blow as they lost an overtime thriller to the Cincinnati Bengals 30-24.<o:p></o:p>
The Patriots, who suffered a sixth straight defeat, were booed off the field by the remaining fans at Gillette Stadium as they fell to 3-13 on the season.<o:p></o:p>

For the Chargers it was a job well done as the confident Herbert ensured a second playoff spot in three seasons with another accomplished display.<o:p></o:p>
Herbert completed 28 of 38 passes and threw for 281 yards against a Patriots defense that caused few issues against the passing game.<o:p></o:p>
The Chargers took the lead late in the first quarter thanks to a beautiful 23-yard Herbert pass, superbly caught by the diving Derius Davis.<o:p></o:p>
After a Cameron Dicker field goal early in the second, Herbert found rookie receiver Ladd McConkey at the back of the end-zone with a pinpoint pass to make it 17-0.<o:p></o:p>
Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye, who was evaluated for a possible concussion after a first-quarter hit, returned in the second and hit DeMario Douglas with a fine 36-yard touchdown pass to give the Patriots some hope.<o:p></o:p>
But the Chargers ran away with the game, with Herbert again connecting with McConkey -- this time with a 40-yard pass down the middle. A two-yard rush from J.K Dobbins in the fourth completed the rout.<o:p></o:p>
Herbert's performance meant he set a record for the most passing yards in the first five years of an NFL career -- passing Peyton Manning's tally of 20,618 yards.<o:p></o:p>
Herbert was quick to give credit for his achievement to his team-mates.<o:p></o:p>
"It says so much about the guys we had catching those passes and a great offensive line giving me the time to get the ball off and (the defense) getting me the ball back," he said. "I couldn't have done it without them," he added.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>Broncos denied<o:p></o:p></h2>
The Broncos headed to Cincinnati knowing a win would secure them the final AFC place in the playoffs, but they now must beat the defending Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, to be sure of extending their season.<o:p></o:p>
The game was 10-10 after a largely attritional first-half but the contest came alive when Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow found Tee Higgins with a 12-yard touchdown pass.<o:p></o:p>
Denver responded with a magnificent 51-yard hurl from their rookie quarterback Bo Nix to Marvin Mims.<o:p></o:p>
After back-to-back turnovers, Burrow's one-yard rushing score made it 24-17 with 1:29 to go.<o:p></o:p>
But Nix delivered again -- throwing high to Mims in the end-zone and despite double coverage, the receiver came down with the ball to tie the game with eight seconds remaining.<o:p></o:p>
Neither side was able to score on its first possession in overtime.<o:p></o:p>
The Bengals created a 33-yard field goal shot, but back-up kicker Cade York struck the upright.<o:p></o:p>
Denver were forced to punt and this time the Bengals found the decisive score -- Higgins brilliantly bringing in a 31-yard pass from Burrow before the pair connected again for the three-yard game-winning touchdown.

NFL: Herbert leads Los Angeles Chargers into playoffs, Broncos denied

Novak Djokovic on Sunday called for more transparency around doping suspensions in tennis, saying high-ranked players appeared to be treated differently to others. The 24-time Grand Slam champion agreed with Australian Nick Kyrgios, who on Saturday said integrity in the sport was "awful".<o:p></o:p>
They were speaking in the wake of doping violations by world number ones Italian Jannik Sinner and Poland's Iga Swiatek during 2024.<o:p></o:p>
The 37-year-old Djokovic, who will play doubles with Kyrgios at the Brisbane International this week, said there needed to be far greater transparency from the sport's governing bodies around doping violations. And he said that it appeared that top players such as Sinner and Swiatek were being treated differently from those further down the rankings.<o:p></o:p>
"I think Nick has some fair points when it comes to transparency and inconsistency with protocols and case-to-case comparables," the Serbian said. "We have some players who have been waiting for over a year for their case to be resolved, so the issue is the inconsistency and the transparency."<o:p></o:p>

While Djokovic said he believed Sinner when he said he tested positive to the steroid clostebol due to contamination from his physiotherapist, he asserted that the players had been "kept in the dark" throughout the whole process.<o:p></o:p>

The 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic agreed with Australian Nick Kyrgios, who on Saturday said integrity in the sport was "awful".

Novak Djokovic on Sunday called for more transparency around doping suspensions in tennis, saying high-ranked players appeared to be treated differently to others. The 24-time Grand Slam champion agreed with Australian Nick Kyrgios, who on Saturday said integrity in the sport was "awful". They were speaking in the wake of doping violations by world number ones Italian Jannik Sinner and Poland's Iga Swiatek during 2024. The 37-year-old Djokovic, who will play doubles with Kyrgios at the Brisbane International this week, said there needed to be far greater transparency from the sport's governing bodies around doping violations. And he said that it appeared that top players such as Sinner and Swiatek were being treated differently from those further down the rankings. "I think Nick has some fair points when it comes to transparency and inconsistency with protocols and case-to-case comparables," the Serbian said. "We have some players who have been waiting for over a year for their case to be resolved, so the issue is the inconsistency and the transparency." Tennis: Djokovic calls for more transparency around doping suspensions

The Melbourne Test match between India and Australia is hanging in the balance as both sides push for a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June 2025. With India running out of games and in a do-or-die situation, it is a desperate time for Rohit Sharma&rsquo;s men if they are to dream of a third consecutive final. However, considering the state of the MCG Test, a draw is more likely result as we enter the decisive phase. So here is the scenario of things if the MCG Test match ends in a draw at the MCG.<o:p></o:p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">What is the current WTC standing?<o:p></o:p></h2>
Entering the Boxing Day Test, India sit third in the WTC standings with a win percentage (PCT) of 55.88 while Australia occupy the second spot with 58.89 PCT. On the other hand, South Africa are top of the standings with 63.33 and are likely to seal a top-two berth in the WTC standings if they beat Pakistan in the Centurion Test. Despite sitting below New Zealand in the standings, Sri Lanka are still in with a chance to reach the WTC final as they have two matches in hand.<o:p></o:p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">What happens if Boxing Day Test ends in draw?<o:p></o:p></h2>
In case the Boxing Day Test ends in a draw, both India and Australia will drop points in the WTC standings meaning the former&rsquo;s chances of making the final will hang in balance. India will have a PCT of 54.63 and will sit third while Australia will remain second with a PCT of 57.29. In this case, India&rsquo;s fate of reaching the WTC final will be out of their hands with them needing to win the Sydney Test and other results going their way.

Even a 1-0 win for Australia against Sri Lanka will see India qualify for the WTC final. <o:p></o:p>
However, if India draw the Sydney Test, then Rohit and Co will need a helping hand from Sri Lanka to reach the summit clash. Chess number one Magnus Carlsen has quit a world championship event in New York after being fined and threatened with exclusion for breaching the dress code by wearing jeans.
<h2>Magnus Carlsen walks out</h2>
Carlsen was asked to change his clothes Friday at the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships after falling foul of the governing body's regulations.
The chess federation (FIDE) said Carlsen rejected the opportunity to switch out of his jeans, and he was issued a fine of $200 (192 euros).
In a statement, FIDE said its rules "are designed to ensure professionalism and fairness for all participants". &nbsp;
It cited the case of another competitor who was fined for wearing sports shoes but allowed to continue after changing into appropriate footwear.
Carlsen, 34, is a five-time world chess champion. The Norwegian is also the reigning champion in both the rapid and blitz chess competitions.
"I put on a shirt, jacket and honestly like I didn't even think about jeans, even changed my shoes," Carlsen told the chess channel Take Take Take.&nbsp;
"First of all, I got a fine which is fine, and then I got a warning that I would not be paired if I didn't go change my clothes. They said that I could do it after the third round today.

Australia pacer Scott Boland has backed his side to come good on Day 4 of the ongoing Melbourne Test against India as the match hangs in balance. Playing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), India&rsquo;s Nitish Kumar Reddy stole the headlines despite some good bowling by Australia as he ended the day with an unbeaten 105 before the stumps were called. Nick Kyrgios lashed out on Saturday at what he believes is the lenient treatment of world tennis number one Italian Jannik Sinner for a failed drug test and said integrity in the sport was "awful". <o:p></o:p>Sinner twice tested positive for the banned steroid clostebol in March.<o:p></o:p>

‘Tennis’ integrity is awful,’ Kyrgios on punishment for Sinner’s failed dope test

Former five-time Ballon d&rsquo;Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo feels Real Madrid and Brazil winger Vinicius Jr should have won the prestigious award this year, where he stood second, with Manchester City midfielder Rodri taking home the coveted trophy. Ronaldo argued that it was unfair for Vinicius to miss out on winning the most prized individual award in football.
At the Globe Soccer Awards on Friday (Dec 27), Ronaldo didn&rsquo;t mince his words in saying that the Brazilian forward was the rightful recipient of the 2024 Ballon d&rsquo;Or.
Meanwhile, the whole Real Madrid contingent, alongside Vinicius Jr, boycotted the award ceremony in Paris to protest Vinicius&rsquo; omission from the top spot.

For most of the lead-up to the award ceremony, Vinicius was leading the race to win his maiden Ballon d&rsquo;Or; however, on the eve of the event, several reports claimed that Manchester City&rsquo;s Rodri pipped Madrid&rsquo;s superstar, a rumour that became a reality soon after.&nbsp;
The Spanish midfielder was instrumental in Manchester City winning the treble the past season, which included them completing a historic four-peat of league titles.
"In my opinion, he [Vinicius] deserved to win the Golden Ball [Ballon d'Or award]. It was unfair, in my opinion. I say here in front of everybody. They give it to Rodri, he deserved it too, but they should have given it to Vinicius because he won the Champions League and scored in the final,&rdquo; Ronaldo said during the award ceremony.
Despite missing out on winning the Ballon d&rsquo;Or, Vinicius was no short of accolades for his performances this past season, as he earlier won FIFA's Best Men's Player, besides receiving the Best Men's Player prize at the Globe Soccer Awards. On the other hand, Barcelona's Aitana Bonmat bagged the Women's Player of the Year award, maintaining her streak of individual honours.
<h2>&lsquo;The problem is the same&rsquo;</h2>
Ronaldo praised the Globe Soccer Awards for recognising him as the Best Middle East Player of 2024. Since joining Al-Nassr (in 2023) following his unfruitful exit from Premier League club Manchester United, Ronaldo has been in top form, notching up 74 goals in 83 appearances for the Pro-Saudi League club.
He, however, also commented on United&rsquo;s slump, saying it&rsquo;s not the coach but more than that.
"If you have the fish inside and he's sick, and you take him out and you fix the problem, and you put him again in an aquarium, you will be sick again,&rdquo; Ronaldo said.&nbsp;

NBA: Champions Celtics snap two-game losing streak with win over Pacers

Arsenal began life without Bukayo Saka by beating Ipswich 1-0 to move into second place in the Premier League and cut Liverpool's lead to six points on Friday. Kai Havertz scored the only goal as Arsenal failed to turn their dominance into a more convincing scoreline.<o:p></o:p>
The lack of a clinical goalscorer may ultimately cost Mikel Arteta's men a first league title in more than 20 years, but they took advantage of Chelsea's shock 2-1 defeat against Fulham on Thursday to become Liverpool's closest challenger.<o:p></o:p>
Saka is set to be sidelined for "many weeks" in the words of Gunners' boss Arteta with fears the England international could be out until March due to a hamstring injury suffered in last weekend's 5-1 victory at Crystal Palace.<o:p></o:p>

Arteta's solution was to start with Gabriel Martinelli in Saka's normal role wide right with Gabriel Jesus continuing up front after scoring five times in Arsenal's previous two outings.<o:p></o:p>
The home side were dominant in possession but had few clear-cut chances to show for it until the final quarter.<o:p></o:p>
"Frustration when you win? No. Things to improve? Yes," said Arteta on the slender margin of victory. "Credit to them as they're very well organised, but we restricted them to nothing," he added.<o:p></o:p>

Arsenal's prowess from set-pieces has been well-documented and they should have added to their goals from corners this season.<o:p></o:p>
Gabriel Magalhaes headed against the outside of the post from point-blank range when it seemed easier to score.<o:p></o:p>
As Ipswich's ambition grew as the second half wore on, so the chances at the other end began to flow.<o:p></o:p>
Martin Odegaard had given the home crowd a scare by going down holding the left ankle that saw him sidelined by injury for two months earlier in the campaign. The Arsenal captain, though, was quickly back on his feet and weaving his way through the Ipswich defence with a mazy run and powerful strike that Muric tipped over.<o:p></o:p>
From the resulting corner, Declan Rice's powerful shot was blocked by Dara O'Shea.<o:p></o:p>
Havertz then wasted a glorious chance for his second and Muric saved once more from Mikel Merino to ensure a nervy ending.<o:p></o:p>
But Arsenal held out to leapfrog Nottingham Forest and Chelsea into second.<o:p></o:p>
Ipswich remain second from bottom, three points adrift of safety.

Martin Odegaard had given the home crowd a scare by going down holding the left ankle that saw him sidelined by injury for two months earlier in the campaign. The Arsenal captain, though, was quickly back on his feet and weaving his way through the Ipswich defence with a mazy run and powerful strike that Muric tipped over. From the resulting corner, Declan Rice's powerful shot was blocked by Dara O'Shea. Havertz then wasted a glorious chance for his second and Muric saved once more from Mikel Merino to ensure a nervy ending. But Arsenal held out to leapfrog Nottingham Forest and Chelsea into second. Ipswich remain second from bottom, three points adrift of safety. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. PL: Saka-less Arsenal move to second spot after win over Ipswich Town

A Spanish court on Friday said it had rejected Barcelona's request to register Dani Olmo beyond the year's end, potentially pushing the star closer to leaving the Catalan giants for free.
<h2>Dani Olmo out of Barcelona?</h2>
The Spain playmaker signed from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig last summer for a reported 60 million euros, but La Liga rules limiting spending on wages and transfers complicated his registration.
Barcelona, mired in debt, registered Olmo to December 31 with 80 percent of injured defender Andreas Christensen's pay thanks to an exception allowing clubs to replace long-term absentees.
After La Liga refused the club's request to extend his registration to the end of the season, Barcelona took the case to court claiming unfair competition and seeking to register Olmo until June 30, 2025.
A Barcelona commercial court said in a ruling dated Monday that it had rejected the club's requests as none of the criteria had been met.
"The aim of authorising the overspend is so that a long-term injury does not undermine the team's competition, not so that the long-term injury allows the registration of players who exceed the limit with their salary," which Barcelona tried to do, the court ruled.
Olmo cannot be registered for the rest of the season, "once it is understood that the player's contract ends on December 31, 2024 and cannot be extended", the court added.
Spanish media said Olmo's contract, initially set to run until 2030, includes a clause that would release the Euro 2024 champion if he could not be registered.
Barcelona can appeal the ruling and Spanish media reported that the club can resort to alternative means to secure the registration.
These include further legal action, board members providing personal assets to guarantee the registration and selling VIP seat packages for the expanded future Camp Nou to generate extraordinary income, they said.

La Liga said it had applied the requirements equally to all teams and welcomed that no exception was made which could otherwise "seriously alter the equality of conditions" of the competition.
Olmo's potential departure would be a huge blow to the Blaugrana, who have let slip their early lead and dropped to third in a tight title race.
Hansi Flick's side sit three points adrift of leaders Atletico Madrid and two behind Real Madrid having played one game more than both rivals.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has slammed pacer Mohammed Siraj for his below-par performance in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy as the visitors continue to struggle.
