Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels
In a surprising turn of events, Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has openly criticised manager Edin Terzic, just days before the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid. Hummels, who has been dropped from the German squad for the Euro 2024 said a club like Dortmund should never be playing in the manner they did in some of the matches during the 23-24 season.
In the astonishing rant, Hummels referred to Dortmund's away defeats to VfB Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen and called out the manager.
"I was furious because I was of the opinion that Borussia Dortmund shouldn't play like that - against any opponent in the world. I didn't think it could go on like this," Hummels told Bild.
"I felt insulted in my honour to stand on the pitch in that kit. So submissive, so inferior in footballing terms. The two Stuttgart games and the away game in Leverkusen. That was barricading with 11 men in the box."
Quizzed if he complained to Terzic who was close to being sacked after a slow start to the season, Hummels said: "I gave a lot of suggestions. Really to everyone involved. Just to try and play better football again."
"I went to the coach's office and we talked. With the clear opinion that we clearly have to improve in the forward play."
Hummels then claimed that Dortmund's fortunes improved not because of Terzic but due to the arrival of assistant coaches Nuri Sahin And Sven Bender.
"It clearly got better after the winter break. That's also down to the co-trainers Nuri Sahin and Sven Bender who came in.
While Hummels criticised the defensive setup by Terzic, it was one of the key reasons why Dortmund were able to overcome the knockout jitters in UCL and slay the likes of Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain en route the final.
The timing of his rant raises suspicion as it has the potential to cause a breakdown in the squad when Dortmund need the entire squad to gel together.
Madrid are record 14-time UCL champions and look much stronger on paper than Dortmund. Any potential upset by Dortmund will require a monumental effort from its players who will need to be on same wavelength as the manager.
