Additionally, the residence of Chandan Louha, a&nbsp;non-teaching staff of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital at Tala in North Kolkata, was also being searched. Reportedly, Louha is an extremely close confidant of Ghosh and was even running an illegal cafeteria within the RG Kar hospital premises due to the ex-principal's patronage.

Finally, a chemist &amp; druggist shop at Kalindi, north Kolkata, were raided after ED officials tracked several documents relating to business transactions with RG Kar authorities while Ghosh was at the helm of the hospital's affairs.

Relatives of the detained individuals later gathered outside the police station, calling for their release. The police clarified that those taken into custody were being questioned regarding the incident.

Ganesh 'visarjan' procession turns violent in India's Karnataka; 52 held as tensions escalate near mosque

Indian spiritual guru Sadhguru has expressed his disappointment over Yoga entering as a “sport” in the 2026 Asian Games, scheduled to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.&nbsp;

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), announced on Sunday (Sep 8) that Yogasana will now be a part of the Asian Games calendar as a demonstration sport. The decision was made after the resolution for the same was passed unanimously at the 44th General Assembly of OCA. The sports organisation also elected India’s Randhir Singh as the OCA president for a term of four years from 2024 to 2028.

"Yoga will be a demonstration sport in Nagoya as the calendar for the 2026 Asian Games has already been made and approved," said Randhir.

"In 10 days time we have managed to convince all members and include yoga, which is being promoted by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

This will be the first time that yoga, which originated in India, will be performed on an international stage as a big sporting event. The promotion of yoga at the global level was one of the Modi administration’s special agendas. In September 2014, PM Modi suggested that&nbsp;June 21 be celebrated as International Yoga Day, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.&nbsp;

"It is deeply disturbing and disappointing that #Yoga is entering an arena which is essentially a competitive sport arena. Yoga cannot be a competition," said Sadhguru on X.

“Yoga is a powerful tool &amp; mechanism for self-evolution- to raise a human being from limited possibilities to unlimited perception and experience of life. This should not be done in competition with somebody else.”

The NCPCR said madrassas merely teaching from a few NCERT books in the curriculum is a "mere guise" in the name of imparting education and does not ensure that the children are receiving formal and quality education.

"A madrassa is not only a unsuitable/unfit place to receive 'proper' education but also in absence of entitlements as provided under Sections 19, 21,22, 23, 24, 25, and 29 of the RTE Act," it said.

"Further, madrassas do not only render an unsatisfactory and insufficient model for education but also have an arbitrary mode of working which is wholly in absence of a standardised curriculum and functioning," the NCPCR said in its written submissions filed before the top court.

The child rights body stated that due to the absence of provisions of the RTE Act, 2009, the madrassas are also deprived of entitlement as in Section 21 of the Act of 2009.

"A madrassa works in an arbitrary manner and runs in an overall violation of the Constitutional mandate, RTE Act and the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. It cannot be overlooked that a child getting education in such an Institution will be devoid of basic knowledge of school curriculum which is provided in a school.

"A school is defined under Section 2(n) of the RTE Act, 2009, which means any recognised school imparting elementary education. A madrassa being out of this definition has no right to compel children or their families to receive madrassa education," the NCPCR said.

It said most of the madrassas fail to provide a holistic environment to students, including planning social events, or extracurricular activities for 'experiential learning.

In a breather to about 17 lakh madrassa students, the apex court on April 5 had stayed an order of the Allahabad High Court that scrapped the Uttar Pradesh Board of Madarsa Education Act, 2004 calling it "unconstitutional" and violative of the principle of secularism.

Officers from Dial-100, along with other military personnel rushed to the scene, but till then attackers fled upon seeing the approaching vehicles.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Indian government on Wednesday (Sep 11) green-lighted a $6,000 (INR 500,000) health coverage plan for all senior citizens aged 70 and above. The plan, launched under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), will cover all senior citizens, irrespective of economic status.&nbsp;

The decision was taken at the meeting of the Union Cabinet on Wednesday.&nbsp;

According to the Indian government, Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana is the world's largest publicly funded health assurance scheme. The scheme covers 550 million families, regardless of the age of family members.

The government said the new insurance plan is set to benefit more than 45 million Indian families across the country.

“All senior citizens of the age 70 years and above, irrespective of their socio-economic status, would be eligible to avail the benefits of AB PM-JAY,” the government said in a release.

As of now, INR 3,437 crore have been earmarked for the scheme, a figure the government says will increase with time.

“This is a demand-based scheme; as the demand goes up, the coverage will also be increased,” said Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav while sharing the cabinet meet decisions.

<h2>How to avail the new scheme?</h2>

To avail benefits of the new insurance plan, senior citizens will receive a separate card under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).

The citizens who are already covered under previous AB PM-JAY plans will get an additional top-up for $6,000 per annum.

A grenade attack took place in the Indian Union Territory of Chandigarh on Wednesday (Sep 11), targeting a house in the upscale Sector 10 area of the city.

In response to the claim of being the "first eye drop in India to reduce the need for reading glasses", the DGCI order stated that the company said there are currently no other eye drops approved for the treatment of presbyopia in India.

"After perusal of your reply, it is clear that you had failed to respond to the queries as put to you," the DGCI order said.

Considering various media reports, there is a likelihood of the general public being misled by the claims made by the company for which no approval was granted, it added.

"In view of the above and considering the public interest, the permission issued to manufacture and market of Pilocarpine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution USP 1.25% w/v vide is hereby suspended till further orders under the provisions of Rule 84 of the New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940," the order stated.

All facts disclosed to the media were strictly on the basis of the recent DCGI approval for treatment of presbyopia in adults and the results of the phase 3 clinical trial conducted by us in India," the company said.

An Indian High Court has ruled that while minors in live-in relationships cannot seek legal protection from courts, adults, even those already married, should be given protection if facing threats.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled that married persons entering into live-in relationships should be given protection if they are facing threats from their respective families or "moral vigilants".&nbsp;

The judgment was delivered in a case involving three separate petitions, reports Law Trend. The first involved a married man&nbsp;living with another woman in a live-in relationship. The second case, meanwhile, involved a married woman in a live-in relationship with another man.

"Irrespective of socio-moral effect of such live-in relationships rather the preemptions of apposite assaults of any nature, befalling the live-in couple concerned, is the cornerstone of the structure laid by the Apex Court, wherebys, self autonomy in its various dynamic forms has been endowed upon the live-in couple, even if one of them is married, and, even if therebys thus decriminalised adultery does erupt. Therefore, therebys the protection to the above genre of relationship is to be granted," opined the division bench of the High Court.

However, the court observed that those with minor children should not abandon his/her duty to provide optimum care and protection to their wards.

It also noted that the well-being of children born out of wedlock also needs to be addressed, and that male partners in live-in relationships who father minor children have a moral obligation to maintain and care for them.

"The reason for reaching the conclusion is firmly embedded in the factum that a minor belonging to any religious denomination is incompetent to contract. If so, he/she has no capacity even to make choices or to express his/her freedom," said the bench.

The bench further elaborated that, under several Indian statutes including the Hindu Minority and Guardianship Act, the Guardians and Wards Act and the Indian Majority Act, minors were legally restricted from entering into contracts.
