Mounting a blistering attack on Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused the prime minister and the BJP of posing a threat to the country, claiming that they "spread hatred and anger".

Reacting to Gandhi's remark, BJP spokesperson and Rajya Sabha member GVL Narasimha Rao said, "It is the Congress that has resorted to caste and communal politics. The BJP has spoken on issues of development and people's welfare. The Congress, in its desperation to come back to the electoral race, has been appealing to caste and communal considerations."

Addressing rallies in poll-bound Telangana, Gandhi also lambasted caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, calling him "Khao Commission Rao" for alleged corruption and accusing his Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) of being the "B team" of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"Wherever I go, I speak against Narendra Modi, because I know there is a threat to the country from Modi and the BJP. They spread hatred and anger," he said at a rally in Tandur.

The Congress, he asserted, would stand up to it, continue to fight against it and never compromise.

"...In 2019 (Lok Sabha polls), we will see to it that the BJP is defeated and Modi is removed," Gandhi said.

Hitting out at Rao, who is popularly called KCR, he asked the TRS chief why he supported the BJP and wanted to become the "B team" of the saffron party.

"You (KCR) have done so much of corruption that your name is changed. Today, your name KCR stands for 'Khao Commission Rao'.

"Because of this, Modi ran Telangana through a remote control. The fact is that due to your (KCR) corruption, you are not able to stand up to Modi," Gandhi alleged.
Rao feared Modi as he indulged in corruption, Gandhi claimed, speaking at a rally in Hyderabad in the evening.

"I will tell you the reason. You listen to the speeches of KCRji. In the last five years, (he) did not hurt Narendra Modi, supported him in the Lok Sabha...KCR has indulged in corruption. Modiji has the CBI, the Enforcement Directorate. Because of corruption, KCRji fears Modi," he said.

Telangana's "remote control" was in the hands of Modi, he added.

The Congress chief said in every speech, the prime minister attacked him, made fun of him, talked about his family, but never criticised KCR, adding that the real name of KCR's party (TRS) was "T-RSS".

The TRS and the Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) were actually the "B" and "C" teams of the BJP, he alleged.

Modi and the TRS had struck a "partnership" to ensure the continuation of the BJP and TRS rule at the Centre and in the state respectively, Gandhi said.

"In this election, we will break this partnership. We will defeat the TRS and the AIMIM...We will ensure the defeat of the TRS in Telangana and Modi's BJP in Delhi (in the 2019 Lok Sabha election)," he said at his first rally of the day in Gadwal.

Gandhi also accused KCR of redesigning the Rs 10,000-crore Palamuru-Ranga Reddy Lift Irrigation Scheme into a Rs 60,000-crore project to benefit his friends and family, adding that the people of the state did not get water.

"Thousands of crores of rupees went to his contractor friends and his family," he alleged.

"KCR has been redesigning one project after another in the last five years and the people have given him a new name...Every child knows his new name. It is Khao Commission Rao," the Congress chief said.

When the state was formed five years ago, people had a dream of a new Telangana and a brighter future - of "neelu" (water), "nidhulu" (funds) and "niyamakalu" (appointments) and of a "Bangaru Telangana" (Golden Telangana) - he said.

"KCR became the chief minister and only one family ruled the state...Your dreams were shattered. KCR betrayed you on (the promise of) water," he said, adding that under the TRS rule, the dream of a "Golden Telangana" had led to a "golden kutumbam" (golden family).

The Congress is contesting the Telangana Assembly polls, leading a four-party People's Front, while the TRS and the BJP are going it alone.

The 119-member Telangana Assembly will go to polls on December 7 and the results will be announced on December 11.

Blaming the previous Congress rules for bank defaults, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday alleged the defaulters used to carry the party's name as "taveej" (amulet) as a shield but his government has acted strongly against such people and even "big crorepatis" have been forced to pay up.

Modi alleged that banks were "looted" by "naamdaar" who used to make telephone calls to the lenders to sanction loans.

Addressing an election rally here, he said those shedding "crocodile tears" for farmers should come to Rajasthan "to see" whether lands of farmers were purchased at a throw away price or not by people allegedly close to the Congress party in Delhi.

"Had the farmers known about the future and potential of solar power park, would they have sold their lands," the prime minister said.

Talking about the 'amulet', Modi said it saved people who looted government money.

"Main aapko samjhana chahta hun. Unhone Congress ke naam ka taveej bana rakha tha. Jo log galat kaam karte hai, bura kaam karte hai, sarkaari khajaane se lootte hai, bankon se paise maar lete hai, unkon kuch karne ki jarurat nahin thi. Congress ka taveej bandhon to unkon ek raksha kawach mil jaata tha (I want to make you (people) understand. They had made an 'amulet' in the name of Congress, which saved the people doing wrong deeds, looted government funds, take huge bank loans. They had to do nothing but to tie Congress amulet which acted as a shield.)," he said.

The prime minister said the credit given to people by banks between 2006 and 2014, when Congress was in power at the Centre, was more than the money given to people since Independence.

"Telephone karke bankon ko loota gaya. Naamdaar ke phone jaate the aur bank se paise diye jaate the. (Banks were looted by making phone calls. Banks used to lend money after calls from 'naamdaar'," Modi said.

The prime minister said the BJP government, which came to power in 2014, enacted a law to recover money from defaulters. He said his government made stringent laws such as the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, under which Rs 3 lakh crore were recovered from loan defaulters.

"We brought big crorepatis on roads and recovered money," he said.

The opposition parties have been accusing the government of being soft on big corporates and of doing nothing to recover unpaid loans.

Modi also targeted the Congress for allegedly spreading lies.

"Those travelling with a rose on their shirt had knowledge about parks but not farming. Those who are not able to differentiate between mustard and sesame are giving lessons. Had Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel been the first prime minister,farmers of the country would not have faced misery," Modi said.

He also talked about the Swaminathan Commission, saying the final volume of its report came in 2007 but UPA government did not act on its recommendations on the Minimum Support Price to farmers.

Citing contribution of the Bishnoi community, he said members of the community laid their lives to protect the environment and India received the accolade of 'Champions of Earth' due to their efforts.

Loan defaulters used to carry Congress amulet as shield against law: Modi in Rajasthan

Countdown began Tuesday for the launch of India's heaviest satellite GSAT-11, that would Boost broadband services, from French Guiana in the early hours of Wednesday.

The countdown started at 1.14 pm IST and the launch is scheduled for 2.07 AM IST Wednesday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said.

Arianespace's launch vehicle Ariane-5 will carry the satellite. According to the European space transporter, the launch window is between 2.07 am and 3.23 am IST.

"The Ariane 5 for Arianespace's 10th mission of 2018 is now in the launch zone at French Guiana, positioning it for liftoff tomorrow with two international satellite payloads: India's GSAT-11 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2A for Korea," Arianespace said on its website.

Riding in the upper payload position for the 33-minute mission to geostationary transfer orbit is GSAT-11, it said.

Weighing about 5,854 kg, GSAT-11 is the "heaviest" satellite built by ISRO.

GSAT-11 is the next generation "high throughput" communication satellite configured around ISRO's I-6K Bus, and its designed lifetime is more than 15 years.

The satellite will be initially placed in the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit and later raised to Geostationary Orbit by firing the on-board Liquid Apogee Motor.

GSAT-11 will be located at 74 East and is the fore-runner in a series of advanced communications satellites with multi-spot beam antenna coverage over Indian mainland and islands, the ISRO said.

It was initially planned for launch on May 25 but was rescheduled with the ISRO citing the need for additional technical checks.

The satellite will play a vital role in providing broadband services across the country and also be a platform to demonstrate new generation applications, ISRO said.

Since the launch of India's APPLE experimental satellite on Ariane Flight L03 in 1981, Arianespace has orbited 21 satellites under contracts with it, the ISRO said adding two more satellites, GSAT-31 and GSAT-30, were in the order book.

Madhya Pradesh's top election officer has sought a report over a purported video in which Rewa District Collector is heard asking a security official posted outside a strongroom where EVMs are kept to "shoot" anyone who doesn't listen to him and tries to breach the safety ring.

The video, which has gone viral on social media, comes amid the opposition Congress raising doubts over the security arrangement of Electronic Voting Machines used in the November 28 election and kept in strongrooms across the state.

Asked about the controversial video featuring Rewa District Collector Preeti Maithil, Chief Electoral Officer V L Kantha Rao told reporters Monday, "We have sought a report in this regard. On receiving, this report would be forwarded to the Election Commission of India."

During elections, District Collectors function as returning officers in their respective districts and supervise the polling process.

The video appears to have been shot when Maithil was inspecting the security of strongrooms along with candidates.

In the video, Maithil is heard saying she has had a long career and would not spoil it for polls or over some petty issue.

"I will not put my career at stake... You trust him (turning to a security man moving with them)...Shoot if someone doesn't listen to you (and tries to breach the security of the strongroom)," she says in the clip.

In reply to another question, Rao said the candidates would be handed over the tabulation sheet after every round of counting, which will take place on December 11, to dispel any doubt related to vote count.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres the motivation for <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/act-now-or-risk-disaster-world-told-at-un-climate-summit-181034">his "strong commitment" to climate action</a> is rooted in the ancient Hindu scriptures, the Vedas.

Modi and Guterres met last week on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where the two held discussions about climate change and India's support for the Paris Climate Agreement.&nbsp;

The UN chief thanked Modi for his commitment to increase India's nationally-determined contributions to the Paris Agreement. Guterres had also held discussions with Modi during his three-day visit to India this year coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary on October 2. During that visit, Guterres had presented the Indian leader with the United Nations Champions of the Earth Award for policy leadership for 2018.&nbsp;

"It's not only Christianity, I was speaking to Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi of India recently and asking him what was his motivation for his very strong commitment to climate action and he said it's in the Vedas, the founding books of Hinduism. I think this is felt in all religions,"Guterres said at a press conference in Poland Monday.&nbsp;

He was responding to a question on whether he thinks religions have a role to play in the field of climate change. The transcript of the Secretary General's joint press conference with Polish President Andrzej Duda was issued by the UN spokesperson's office here.

Guterres is in the Polish city Katowice for the high-level UN COP24 Climate Change Conference. The two-week 24th conference of the parties to the UN Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) marks the deadline for the 197 parties that signed the Convention, to adopt guidelines for the implementation of the historic 2015 Paris Agreement.&nbsp;

In Paris, three years ago, countries collectively agreed to keep global temperature rises to no more than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and if possible, to limit the rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Now, in Poland, they have to agree on how they will achieve this collectively.&nbsp;

Guterres was asked the question in a reference to Pope Francis' views on climate change.&nbsp;

"I do believe that if one is a believer and one believes that the world is created by God, it must be terrible to see human beings destroying God's creation. So I think it's perfectly normal that a religion that believes in the work of the Creator is totally against the destruction of the work of the Creator that human beings are (carrying out at present). So I think it is perfectly normal that his Holiness the Pope, not only this Pope, it comes from the past, have a very positive position in relation to climate action," he said.&nbsp;

Pope Francis has in the past called for a "revolution" to combat climate change, saying the consensus was clear and "doomsday predictions can no longer be met with irony or disdain".&nbsp;

Kicking off the high-level event in Poland, along with several other high-level representatives, Guterres highlighted key messages for the thousands of representatives of the world's nations, non-profit organisations, UN agencies, and private sector companies gathered in Katowice.&nbsp;

The Secretary-General noted that climate change is already "a matter of life and death" for many people, nations and countries of the world, and that the science is telling us we need to move faster.&nbsp;

Citing various alarming UN reports including one on rising global CO2 emissions and another one on increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, he called on nations to pay attention to the science and step up their pace as well as their ambitions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres the motivation for his "strong commitment" to climate action is rooted in the ancient Hindu scriptures, the Vedas. Modi and Guterres met last week on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where the two held discussions about climate change and India's support for the Paris Climate Agreement. The UN chief thanked Modi for his commitment to increase India's nationally-determined contributions to the Paris Agreement. Guterres had also held discussions with Modi during his three-day visit to India this year coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary on October 2. During that visit, Guterres had presented the Indian leader with the United Nations Champions of the Earth Award for policy leadership for 2018. "It's not only Christianity, I was speaking to Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi of India recently and asking him what was his motivation for his very strong commitment to climate action and he said it's in the Vedas, the founding books of Hinduism. I think this is felt in all religions,"Guterres said at a press conference in Poland Monday. Evading a direct answer to a question on whether India will get wavier under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) for the S400 missile deal with Russia, US Defence secretary Jim Mattis said that he and his Indian counterpart &nbsp;Nirmala Sitharaman will sort out all the issues.

Sitharaman is on a visit to the US. Earlier, in a meeting with his Indian counterpart at&nbsp;the Pentagon, Mattis appreciated India's leadership as a ''stabilising force" in pursuit of promoting peace and security across the region and the globe.&nbsp;

On S400, he said, "We'll work everything out".

"India has spent many, many years in its non-aligned status. It's drawn a lot of weapons from Russia," he further said.&nbsp;

Prior to her meeting with Mattis, the Indian defence minister was received by US Secretary of State and was accorded the Armed Forces Enhanced Honours Cordon welcome.

Sitharaman while "acknowledging the warmth shown" during her visit, complimented the US for "responsiveness to India's sensitivities."

India has longstanding and wide-ranging cooperation with Russia in the field of defence.

During the 17th India Russia Annual Summit in Delhi, the two sides concluded agreements on the supply of S-400 air defence systems. Along with it India, Russia also agreed on the construction of frigates under Project 1135.6 and shareholders agreement on the formation of joint venture to manufacture Ka-226T helicopters in India. But even as India has tradition ties with Moscow, it is also forging ties with the US.

Lauding the ''growing mutual trust and confidence in our defence partnership" Sitharaman said, a strong foundation has been made for the India-US defence relations over the years. The Minister highlighted the steps taken by the Government of India to promote defence sector manufacturing under "Make in India" flag-ship programme.

The visit by Indian Defence minister comes months after the inaugural 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in New Delhi. Earlier Defence Minister visited the US Department of State, where she signed the condolence book for former US President George HW Bush. She also paid respects at the 'Tomb of the Unknown Soldier' by placing a wreath at the Arlington National Cemetery Memorial.&nbsp;

Following her engagements in Washington DC, Defence Minister will be visiting Reno on 4 December, where she will hold interactions with select leaders of the Indian community in the US. Later, she will visit San Francisco where she would address a roundtable meeting at Stanford.&nbsp;

She will also visit the Defence Innovation unit of the US Department of Defence and interact with start-ups and venture capitalists associated with this Unit.&nbsp;

From 5-7 December, she will visit Honolulu, which is the headquarters of the US Pacific Command (PACOM), recently renamed as INDO-PACOM.&nbsp;

During her visit, she will also hold meetings with Commander of INDO-PACOM, Admiral Philip S. Davidson.&nbsp;

She will also visit Joint Base Pearl Harbour Hickam, where she would board a US Guided Missile Destroyer and will be briefed on INDO-PACOM activities.

Prime Minister<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/-narendra-modi-journey-from-cm-to-pm-139976"> Narendra Modi</a> was once again the top newsmaker in India in the year 2018, according to the Yahoo Year in Review list.

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/un-secretary-general-presents-pm-narendra-modi-champions-earth-award-169160">Modi </a>has featured at the top of the list for at least a couple of years now and is followed this year by Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

Former Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra wrote his way into the list with third position after landmark verdicts on triple talaq and Article 377, among others, Yahoo said.

M J Akbar, who resigned as Minister of State for External Affairs after allegations of sexual harassment, also featured on the list at number 6, behind alleged economic fraudsters Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi.

The excitement surrounding Bollywood's biggest wedding ensured actors Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh were 'couple' newsmakers.

At under two years, Taimur Ali Khan was the youngest entrant to this list -- the son of Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan boasts a formidable following online.

Also joining the list was actress Priya Prakash Varrier, whose wink in the Malayalam film Oru Adaar Love "almost broke the Internet", the statement by Yahoo said.

"There was plenty of fake news swirling online in 2018. Did Modi really touch Owaisi's feet? (photoshopped!), Modi hires personal make-up artist for Rs 15 lakh a month (an old photo from when Madame Tussaud's took PM Modi's measurements) and Rahul Gandhi holds woman's hand on stage (taken before a large group lifted hands in solidarity at a Jan andolan rally)," the statement said listing out the top three fake news doing the rounds online during the year.

Year in Review (YIR) chronicles the top choices of Internet users in India, spotlighting the newsmakers, stories and topics that went viral and were trending online during the year, the Yahoo statement said.

It is based on users' search habits and a selection of what they read, recommended and shared most on Yahoo.

"Over the last decade, YIR has documented the growing empowerment of the country's online audience, seen in the expression and sharing of new ideas online. This year, the collective power of India's Internet users fuelled the watershed #MeTooIndia movement. India's #MeToo Survivors, who started a conversation with wide-reaching impact, are YIR's 2018 Personality of the year," it said.

The year saw several women taking to social media to share accounts of sexual harassment by men in positions of power. The movement crossed over to the mainstream, garnering huge support and mobilizing every section of the media, it said.

The Karnataka election -- one of the most important events on this year's political calendar -- was the Most Searched for Term in 2018. A HuffPost India investigation into the hacking of the Aadhaar software came in at No. 2 on this list, sparking a nation-wide debate and trending online, it noted.
Scam-riddled Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi also bagged spots on the list of Most Searched for Terms in 2018.

RBI Governor Urjit Patel came in at the top of 2018's Finance Newsmakers, holding his own against the government. India's richest man and Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani -- whose wealth reportedly increased by Rs 300 crore per day in 2018 -- came in second on this list. Brother Anil Ambani, Reliance Group Chairman, also features on the list for the Rafale deal controversy, Yahoo said.

"Users bid farewell to Bollywood actress Sridevi with an outpouring of grief and love online, making her one of the Most Searched for Female Celebrities in 2018. They also rooted for Sonali Bendre, who shared her fight against cancer online with #switchonthesunshine, putting her on the list," it said.

Sunny Leone was the Most Searched Female Celebrity yet again, with Priya Prakash Varrier coming in close to the top.

"Salman Khan proved he was the 'biggest boss,' as the Most Searched Male Celebrity of 2018," it said adding that American singer Nick Jonas was a close second as he zoomed up the list with his engagement to actress Priyanka Chopra.

"While staying loyal to Ranveer-Deepika, users also brought in newbies like actor Janhvi Kapoor, and Sara Ali Khan, besides Sprinter Hima Das into India's Top 10 heartthrobs of 2018," Yahoo said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday attacked Rahul Gandhi and said that Congress president always "forgets what he says, as he delivers his speeches with the help of notes provided by his aides".

Addressing an election rally in Hyderabad, Modi said "Naamdaar (Rahul) always fails to remember what he had said earlier. He also fails to recall where he has said a particular thing and in which context. He is handed over the chit and he reads from it."

"The Congress party is tolerating Rahul Gandhi till he attains some talent. The party has no internal democracy and four generations of one family have ruled the Congress," added Modi.

Taking aim at the Congress for calling BJP B team of TRS, &nbsp;Modi said before elections in Karnataka, Congress was repeatedly said that JD(S) is BJP's B team, but we all know what happened after elections, the same thing could happen in Telangana. Congress and TRS are basically two sides of the same coin, &nbsp;Modis said.

''What we are seeing in Telangana is dynastic politics. Out of all the parties, which are contesting these elections, only one party, the BJP values democratic ideals, Modi added.

Defence Secretary James Mattis has expressed confidence that India and the US would be able to resolve all issues related to India's purchase of the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/opinions/india-must-sign-s-400-deal-russia-167776">S-400 air defence</a> systems from Russia that could draw possible<a href="http://www.wionews.com/photos/thaad-vs-s-400-india-dumps-us-picks-russian-defence-missile-system-169445"> US sanctions.</a>

India risked US sanctions when it agreed in October to a USD 5 billion deal to buy Russian missile systems.

India's purchase is subject to potential US sanctions under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), which deals primarily with countries having "significant transactions" with Russia, North Korea or Iran.

"We will work everything out. Trust me," Mattis told reporters Monday as a journalist asked the visiting Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman about the missile deal and the possibility of US sanctions.

India needs a presidential waiver to get around the punitive CAATSA sanctions.

"We'll work all this forward. This is the normal collaboration and consultation that we have with each other," Mattis said in response to a similar question.

"India has been spent many, many years in its nonaligned status, and it's drawn a lot of weapons from Russia," Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon ahead of Sitharaman's arrival on Monday.

Russia's S-400 system, a mobile long-range surface-to-air missile system, made its debut on the world stage in 2007. The platform rivals Lockheed Martin's THAAD, or terminal high altitude area defence, system and Raytheon's Patriot system.

S-400 is known as Russia's most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defence system. China was the first foreign buyer to seal a government-to-government deal with Russia in 2014 to procure the lethal missile system. Moscow has already started delivery of an undisclosed number of the S-400 missile systems to Beijing.

A court Monday extended the CBI remand of two close aides of Brajesh Thakur, the prime accused in the Muzaffarpur shelter home sex scandal, by three days.

Special judge R P Tiwari, hearing cases filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, extended the CBI remand of Madhu Kumari, who managed many of Thakur's NGOs, newspapers and other businesses, and Ashwini -- a quack attached to the shelter home as a "doctor".

The two were arrested two weeks ago and have been in the custody of the central probe agency since November 21.

Media reports have alleged that Ashwini used to administer injections&nbsp;
laced with sedatives to the inmates of the home with the help of Madhu, after which the girls would be subjected to sexual abuse.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the case,&nbsp;produced both Madhu and Ashwini in the POCSO court after the period of their remand expired Monday.

On the probe agency's request, the court extended their remand by three days.

The alleged sexual abuse of the inmates at the Balika Grih in the Sahu Road locality came to light following a social audit of Bihar's shelter homes by the Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS).

An FIR was lodged on May 31 against 11 persons, including Thakur, who was running the shelter home.

As the issue rocked the state legislature and Parliament, a CBI inquiry was recommended by the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government in July.

A fortnight later, state Social Welfare Minister Manju Verma stepped down following reports of close links between her husband Chandrashekhar Verma and Thakur.

Thakur, who was initially shifted to Bhagalpur in view of the fact that he was a "renowned citizen" and his presence in Muzaffarpur could come in the way of a fair probe, is currently lodged in a jail in Punjab's Patiala following a Supreme Court order.&nbsp;

Muslims and the “settlers” from the coastal and Rayalaseema regions of Andhra Pradesh are likely to play a crucial role in the electoral fortunes of the candidates in 24 constituencies falling under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

In the 2014 Andhra Pradesh Assembly polls, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had won nine seats, Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) seven, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) five and Telangana’s ruling party Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) had won three seats.

The TDP and the BJP were in an alliance in 2014. For the upcoming Telangana Assembly polls, the N Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP has struck an electoral pact with the Congress.

In the December 7 election, all the nine MLAs of the TDP, who had left the party subsequently, are contesting on TRS tickets.

Naidu has been campaigning vigorously in the region for the candidates of the Congress-led “Praja Kutami” or the grand alliance, also comprising the TDP, the Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) and the Communist Party of India (CPI).

Naidu has also addressed poll meetings along with Congress president Rahul Gandhi in the GHMC areas, which have over 40 lakh voters.

The AIMIM, which counts the old city as its stronghold, has fielded eight candidates in the region and is supporting the TRS in the remaining seats.

The K Chandrasekhar Rao-led TRS has described the AIMIM as a “friendly party” and said it would have “friendly contests” in the seats where the Owaisi-led party has fielded its nominees.

AIMIM MLC Syed Aminul Hasan Jafri said Muslims constituted 12.7 per cent of Telangana’s population and in the 24 constituencies in the GHMC areas, it was 30 per cent.

“The Congress’s tie-up with the TDP, which was a BJP ally until recently, may not gel well with the Muslim voters. Not only that, since the beginning, not many members of the minority community have voted for the TDP.

“Constituencies like Rajendranagar, Maheswaram, Serilingampalli, Kukatpally, Kutbullapur, Malkajgiri, Uppal and LB Nagar have large numbers of minority voters who certainly have a say,” he told PTI.

Most of the constituencies located in the GHMC area have a large number of people from Andhra Pradesh, also called the “settlers”, accounting for about 20 per cent of the total votes.

The TDP, which is being projected by the TRS as an “Andhra party”, is contesting in some of the key constituencies in the area such as Serilingampalli, Kukatpally and Uppal.

Naidu’s party, which largely banks on the votes of the “settlers”, has fielded party founder NT Rama Rao’s granddaughter Nandamuri Suhasini from Kukatpally.

Political analyst and former MLC Nageswar said the “settlers” would certainly play a decisive role in the electoral outcome in these seats, but they might not vote en masse for any particular party, given the “diverse social structure”.

He pointed out that the TRS had won 100 seats in the GHMC polls largely due to the votes of the “settlers”.

“They (settlers) may not vote for the TRS now, unlike the way they had done in the GHMC polls. At the same time, they may also not vote for the TDP en masse. A particular community, which has got the backing of the TDP, may vote for it, but there are other influential communities which may desist it,” Nageswar said.

Telangana will go to polls on December 7 after Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had dissolved the 119-member Assembly in September and the results will be declared on December 11.

Congress on Monday attacked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over violence in Bulandshahr and said that BJP leader should set his house in order before "gallivanting" around the country for campaigning in elections.

A police inspector and a youth were killed as a mob protesting over illegal cow slaughter went on a rampage torching a police post and clashing with police, which opened fire.

In a press conference, Congress' spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi alleged that the failure of this nature in a state like UP was the "worst kind of failure of law and order and governance".

Adityanath is campaigning across the country while such violence is happening in his own backyard, said Singhvi.&nbsp;

"Here is the poster boy of the BJP in terms of good governance... He should first set his own house in order before gallivanting across the country campaigning and preaching others. This is an utter failure of the law and order situation," he said.

Singhvi also conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and expressed regret over the damage to property.&nbsp;

The Dubai government<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/cbi-files-chargesheet-against-former-iaf-chief-sp-tyagi-in-agustawestland-chopper-scam-19776"> has passed an order to extradite</a> Christian Michel, the alleged middleman in the multi-crore AgustaWestland chopper deal case.

Sources said Michel will be coming to Delhi escorted by the CBI tonight. He will be present in court on Wednesday, sources added.

Christian James Michel, a British national has been taken to Dubai airport and is now on his way to India, media reports in Dubai said.

In July, Delhi's Patiala House Court had summoned former AgustaWestland and <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/agustawestland-chopper-scam-italy-top-court-orders-retrial-of-ex-finmeccanica-executives-10244">Finmeccanica directors Giuseppe</a> Orsi and Bruno Spagnolini in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam. They were asked to appear in court on September 12th.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had earlier filed a fresh chargesheet in a Delhi court accusing Orsi, Spagnolini and ex-IAF chief SP Tyagi of money-laundering in the VVIP chopper bribery scam case.

Italy had earlier refused to extradite Carlo Gerosa, an alleged middleman. The government of Italy said it did not have legal assistance treaty with India. Gerosa was believed to be a key person in the alleged scam. Interpol had already issued a Red Corner Notice against Gerosa.

On January 1, 2014, India scrapped the contract with Finmeccanica's British subsidiary AgustaWestland for supplying 12 AW-101 VVIP choppers to the IAF over the alleged breach of contractual obligations and charges of paying kickbacks to the tune of Rs 423 crore for securing the deal.

It was alleged that the three middlemen - Gerosa, Guido Haschke and Christian Michel - had managed to "make inroads into the IAF in order to influence and subvert its stand regarding reducing the service ceiling of helicopters from 6,000 million to 4,500 million in 2005 after which AgustaWestland became eligible to supply a dozen helicopters for VVIP flying duties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday latched onto Congress chief <a href="http://www.wionews.com/opinions/assembly-elections-2018-its-a-tightrope-walk-for-congress-president-rahul-gandhi-180144">Rahul Gandhi</a>'s 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' barb at him, saying he would recite the slogan ten times in the presence of lakhs of people.&nbsp;

"Congress has a 'naamdar'. That naamdar issued a 'fatwa' today that Modiji should not start addressing election rallies with 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'. And therefore, I, today in the presence of lakhs of people here, I crushed his fatwa and said Bharat Mata ki Jai ten times," he said at a rally in Sikar district of poll-bound Rajasthan.&nbsp;

"You (Gandhi) should be ashamed for this. Freedom fighters embraced death by saying Bharat Mata ki Jai. Our soldiers carry out surgical strikes and say Bharat Mata ki Jai. You are insulting Bharat Mata," he said.&nbsp;

Earlier in the day, Gandhi during a rally in Alwar district said the prime minister recites Bharat Mata ki Jai in all his election rallies but works for industrialist Anil Ambani.

"In every address, he says Bharat Mata Ki Jai and works for Anil Ambani. He should begin his address by saying 'Anil Ambani ki Jai', 'Mehul Choksi ki Jai', 'Nirav Modi ki Jai' and 'Lalit Modi ki Jai',? he said.&nbsp;

Modi also hit out at former chief minister <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/bjp-not-doing-issue-based-politics-gehlot-180949">Ashok Gehlot</a>'s reported remarks of "who knows who will become crorepati", saying it reflected the real intention of Congress party.

Gehlot made the remarks when media asked him who would be the chief minister if the party won.&nbsp;

Holding Congress responsible for all the problems prevailing in the country, the prime minister said people should not allow the party to enter Rajasthan for centuries.&nbsp;

He also said the Rahul Gandhi-led party gave tickets to family members of those lodged in jail in rape cases and women and girls should not give vote to Congress.&nbsp;

He was apparently referring to Mahipal Maderna, who was the minister in Gehlot cabinet, and former MLA Malkhan Bishnoi. They are facing trial in the notorious Bhanwari Devi abduction and murder case in Jodhpur.

The Congress has given ticket to Maderna's daughter Divya Maderna from Osian and Bishnoi's son Mahendra Bishnoi from Luni seat in Jodhpur in the upcoming state polls.&nbsp;

Cornering the opposition party on the issues of farmers, Modi said the UPA dispensation had promised loan waiver and returned to power in 2009 Lok sabha polls, but only Rs 58,000 crore out of the total loan amount of Rs 6 lakh crore was waived off.&nbsp;

Alleging that the Congress looted and destroyed banks, the PM said a loss-making steel company was given loan after a call by Naamdar and the money went to a fake company which existed only in papers, and that fake company purchased lands in Rajasthan and transferred them to a relative of Naamdar.&nbsp;

"The rates of the land increased seven times in just two years," he said.&nbsp;

The comments apparently hint at the land purchased by the company of Priyanka Gandhi's husband Robert Vadra in Bikaner.

Will recite 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' 10 times: PM Modi hits back at Rahul Gandhi

Congress chief<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/modi-kcr-diluted-tribal-rights-law-rahul-gandhi-180255"> Rahul Gandhi</a> Tuesday targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over employment opportunities, farm loan waiver, Rafale deal and demonetisation.&nbsp;

He hit out at Modi over his promise of providing employment to 2 crore youths during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

"Narendra Modi in his election speeches in 2014 had said he would give jobs to 2 crore youths. If you gave employment, why did four youths commit suicide in Alwar?" Gandhi said at a rally in Alwar district's Malakhera town.&nbsp;

Three friends died and another was injured after they allegedly jumped before a moving train in a suspected suicide pact in Alwar district last month. A primary probe revealed that they were depressed due to unemployment, police said.&nbsp;

The Congress leader said the prime minister says the slogan of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' in all his addresses but works for industrialist Anil Ambani.

"In every address, he (PM) says Bharat Mata Ki Jai and works for Anil Ambani. He should begin his address by saying 'Anil Ambani ki Jai', 'Mehul Choksi ki Jai', 'Nirav Modi ki Jai',?Lalit Modi ki Jai'," he said in poll-bound Rajasthan.&nbsp;

Referring to the term 'Bharat Mata', Gandhi said Bharat Mata was the "entire country, farmers, sentiments of crores of youths, women and labourers".

"If you talk about Bharat Mata, how can you forget about farmers?" he said, adding bad debt worth Rs 3.5 lakh crore was written off, but not a single rupee of farmers was waived off by the Modi government.

Exuding confidence of winning the upcoming state Assembly polls, the Gandhi scion said Congress will form the government and waive off farmers loan in ten days, and the chief minister will give 18 hours a day for providing employment to the youths.

Talking about Rafale deal, he said the prime minister would not speak about the matter because if he spoke, "someone from the public would say 'Chowkidar chor hai'".

The Telangana government's decision to give <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/telangana-cm-kcr-under-fire-for-snapping-at-man-querying-about-12-quota-for-muslims-180499">12 per cent quota to Muslims</a> in the state has no constitutional validity, Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Tuesday, alleging it was aimed at "hijacking" the voters for electoral gains.

Some parties, despite knowing that religion-based reservation was not possible, come out with such decisions only to "hijack the voters", Naqvi, on the campaign trail said, targeting the Telangana Rashtra Samithi government.

"Everybody knows even KCR (as <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/telangana-grand-alliance-accuses-kcr-of-colluding-with-bjp-to-escape-from-cbi-180664">K Chandrashekar Rao</a> is popularly known) and also the Congress party that on the basis of religion it is not possible to give any type of reservation.

The first thing is Constitution does not allow such reservation," the minority affairs minister told PTI here.

"People need to be aware about such things," he said, reacting to the TRS chief and caretaker chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao's promise in this regard.

The Telangana legislature had earlier passed a bill increasing reservation in jobs and education for backward sections of the Muslim community to 12 per cent from the earlier four per cent.

The bill is yet to get the Centre's approval.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday alleged the caretaker Telangana government was betraying the country and insulting the Constitution architect B R Ambedkar by proposing religion-based reservation with 12 per cent quota for Muslim minority while "stealing the rights of Dalits."

The Bharatiya Janata Party would never allow religion-based reservations as it is "unconstitutional," party chief Amit Shah recently said.

On demands by some in the BJP and the RSS for bringing out an ordinance for construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya, Naqvi said "it would have been ideal had there been an amicable settlement. Unfortunately, there is a delay...There is demand from saints and seers and it is natural."

"BJP is in favour of the construction of Ram temple," he said but refused to comment if the Centre would promulgate an Ordinance in this regard.

Naqvi, meanwhile, said in a statement that some people and parties have opened "communal auction centre of votes" where the self-styled "champions of secularism" "bid" for votes.

Some people "mercilessly and shamefully" bid for votes, sometimes in the name of religion and sometimes making people afraid of the BJP. But the nefarious design of these "vote ke saudagar" (traders of votes) have been exposed, he claimed.

He said the Modi government followed the policy of "empowerment without appeasement" and development with dignity.

It has been successful in creating an atmosphere of development with trust among all sections of society without any discrimination during the last four-and-half-years, he said.&nbsp;

The Opposition, especially, the Congress, has been suffering from "bankruptcy of facts. That is the reason the Congress leaders are making personal attacks against Prime Minister," he said.

"Sometimes Rahul Gandhi, some other party and sometimes Owaisis...They are masters of abusing and a competition is going on who is the champion of abusing. But the people of the country will teach these people a lesson," he added.&nbsp;

TRS government's Muslim quota move aimed at 'hijacking' voters: Union Minister Naqvi

Asserting that the Modi government at the Centre was committed to the development of Telangana, Union Minister Smriti Irani Tuesday alleged that the ruling TRS had 'failed' to take the central schemes to people at the grass root level.

Addressing an election rally at Nizamabad, she said if voted to power, the BJP would provide bicycles at free of cost to girl students from class VII to X, besides scooter at 50 per cent subsidy to young ladies pursuing higher studies.

Highlighting the promises made in the BJP manifesto for December 7 assembly elections in Telangana, the Information and Broadcasting Minister said her party would waive farm loans up to Rs two lakh and provide free borewell to farmers.

She claimed that as many as 20 lakh families in Telangana were given free gas connections under Ujjwala Yojana scheme and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government had sanctioned over two lakh houses to the state.

"The central government has also connected 44 agricultural markets under eNAM (National Agricultural Market) scheme for the benefit of farmers for better price and better market conditions.

Each and every BJP party worker can proudly say that in these 44 markets, farmers of Telangana were able to sell 7.5 lakh tonnes agricultural goods worth Rs 30,000 crore," she said.

The minister also assured that notification for filling two lakh job vacancies in the state government would be issued within three months if BJP was voted to power.

Irani noted that the Modi government has increased working days under the rural employment scheme, MGNREGA to 150 days from the earlier 100 days and also fund to the extent of Rs 55,000 crore was given.

The CPI(M) Tuesday blamed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s “communally provocative speeches” for the Bulandshahr violence and said it was “planned” in view of 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The CPI(M) Polit bureau in a statement condemned the brutal killing of police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh and a bystander, allegedly by a mob in Bulandshahr district on Monday.

“Such incidents are planned in view of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The communally provocative speeches being made by Chief Minister Adityanath have also created an atmosphere for the mobs to act with impunity”, said the CPI(M) in the statement.

The party alleged that the sudden eruption of violent protests amid rumours of cow slaughter “fits the pattern of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other Hindutva outfits instigating communal tensions.”

Demanding firm actions against those who have perpetrated the crime, the party stated that all steps should be taken to ensure no communal incidents in future.

Three persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the mob violence, police said Tuesday.

Twenty-seven people have been named in the FIR, registered around 3 am following the violence Monday, while cases have been lodged against 50 to 60 unidentified people, police officials said.

Of the 27 named, at least four are workers and functionaries of right-wing organisations, including the Bajrang Dal, officials said.
