A Maharashtra farmer has sent the Rs 1,064 he got after selling his year's produce of 750 kgs of onion to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.&nbsp;

The farmer added that he had to pay an additional Rs 54 for the money order he sent Modi.&nbsp;

Sanjay Sathe is a resident of Niphad tehsil in Maharashtra's Nashik district.&nbsp;

Speaking to PTI, Sathe said, “I produced 750 kg of onion in this season but was offered a rate of Rs 1 per kg at Niphad wholesale market last week.

“Finally I could negotiate a deal for Rs 1.40 per kg and received Rs 1,064 for 750 kg," he added.&nbsp;

“<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/farmers-from-across-india-converging-in-delhi-for-kisan-march-180178">It was painful to see such paltry returns on four months of toil</a>. Hence I have donated Rs 1,064 to Disaster Relief Fund of the PMO as a protest. I had to pay additional Rs 54 for sending it by money order,” Sathe said.

“I do not represent any political party. But I am angry because of the government’s apathy towards our woes,” Sathe added.

Nashik district in north Maharashtra accounts for 50 per cent of onion production in India.

PTI added that Sathe had been among the handful of "progressive farmers" selected by the union agriculture ministry to meet with then US president Barack Obama when he visited India in 2010.&nbsp;

The alarmingly high rates of air pollution in the national capital have raised great concerns for the people as well as the state administration. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala were Monday involved in a war of words in the state assembly over the Sabarimala Temple issue, leading to disruption of House proceedings for the fourth day.

Three UDF MLAs also began an indefinite 'Satyagraha' at the entrance of the House on the issue.

As the war of words continued and Congress-led Opposition UDF MLAs began shouting slogans, the House was adjourned for the fourth day by Speaker P Sreeramakrishann.

Unlike previous days, the House even saw CPI(M)-led LDF members standing up from their seats and locking horns with opposition members, prompting the Speaker to warn both sides.

As soon as the Question Hour began, Chennithala informed the Speaker that the opposition was ready to cooperate in conducting House proceedings.

He said three MLAs-V S Sivakumar (Congress), Parakkal Abdullah (IUML) and N Jayaraj (KC-M)-will observe an indefinite 'Satyagraha' at the portals of the Assembly as the government had not withdrawn prohibitory orders at Sabarimala and also demanding more facilities for pilgrims.

The chief minister said he had thought the opposition would make such an announcement earlier itself in the light of the BJP having decided to shift its agitation in front of the Secretariat from Monday.

"This is a collusion between the Congress and BJP-RSS and a belated awakening," Vijayan said.

While the BJP was agitating in front of the secretariat, the Congress-led UDF MLAs were observing a 'Satyagraha' at the Assembly, he said.

Taking a dig at the UDF, Vijayan even said they were following the stand taken by BJP chief Amit Shah rather than that of their leader Rahul Gandhi on the Sabarimala issue.

Hitting back at Vijayan, Chennithala said the opposition does not need the chief minister's permission to decide when to launch their agitation.

He alleged RSS leader Valsan Thillankeri had been "given charge of the home department" at Sabarimala to control the frenzied devotees last month when a 52-year-old woman was attacked at the hill shrine.

The leader also alleged an RSS outfit had been given charge of "Annadanam", the free meal scheme at Sabarimala and C P Sugathan, who had protested against entry of young women, had been made joint convener of the 'Women's Wall', planned by the LDF government on January 1.

Stung by the chief minister's allegations, opposition members trooped to the well of the House and placed a black banner in front of the Speaker's dais blocking his vision.

As they did not heed to the Speaker's repeated requests to go back to their seats and continued to raise slogans against the chief minister, some angry members of the treasury bench even attempted to move to the well of the House but were dissuaded from doing so by the other ruling Front members.

An angry Speaker hurriedly scrapped the submission and calling attention motions, took up other businesses and adjourned the House for the day within 21 minutes.

Opposition members later moved out of the assembly hall raising slogans.

The three MLAs later began the indefinite 'Satyagraha' at the portals of the assembly demanding the withdrawal of prohibitory orders and other restrictions imposed by the police in and around the Lord Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala.

Chennithala later told reporters the chief minister had allegedly passed on a chit to the Speaker asking him to stop the House proceedings to prevent the opposition from raising nepotism charges against local administration minister K T Jaleel.

The hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa has been witnessing protests by devotees and right-wing activists against the CPI(M)-led LDF government's decision to implement the Supreme Court's September 28 verdict permitting women of all age groups to offer prayers at the temple.&nbsp;

The National Commission for Women Saturday accused the Catholic Church of not protecting the interest of a nun, who has alleged that Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal raped her in 2014.

The church was in the process of "glorifying" the Bishop arrested for raping her, NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma alleged.

She slammed the church for not implementing its directive to constitute internal complaint committees in their institutions where many nuns are serving, saying such a mechanism was a must for protecting them from harassment.

"In churches we don't have any internal complaint committees," she told reporters here.

Sharma said nuns who came up against Jalandhar Bishop could never get justice from the Church because of the absence of such a mechanism in their institutions.

"There was nobody she (victimised nun) could go and complain. We have also written to the church, urging them to constitute internal complaint committees where women can complain," she said.

She alleged that "till now the church has not come clean" in the nun rape case.

Mulakkal, who was Bishop of Jalandhar diocese, was arrested in September for allegedly raping the nun at Kuravilangadu in Kottayam district.

In her complaint to the Kottayam police in June, the nun had alleged that Mulakkal raped her at a guest house in Kuravilangad in May 2014 and later sexually exploited her on several occasions.

However, Mulakkal has denied the charges. He was later granted conditional bail in the case.

He had given up his pastoral duties of Jalandhar diocese of the Missionaries of Jesus and transferred his administrative powers to Bishop Agnelo Gracious.

"We should have internal complaint committees in all the religious places--especially in churches where many nuns are serving. Not many women are serving in the temples or other religious organisations. But in Christianity... In Churches... Many nuns are there," Sharma said.

"They (the Church) are glorifying the accused Bishop," Sharma said. Sharma alleged he was getting security from the Church and his picture was displayed in its calendar.

Sharma said she has got a representation from an organisation working for nuns in which they have alleged that the church was not ready to provide security for the victimised nun.

They have alleged that the Church has urged the police to shift the victim to a shelter home.

"That is how these religious places are working, they are totally against women," she said.

The NCW chairperson also criticised Kerala MLA P C George for not appearing before the commission in a case of allegedly using abusive language against the nun.

The Commission had issued a notice to George asking him to appear before it but he sent his lawyer citing health reasons.

"I am not satisfied with the lawyer's reply. So we are writing to the Speaker of the Kerala Assembly. Speaker is also liable to take action against him (MLA)," she said.

"He never said sorry to us. He just send an explanation through his lawyer. I want him to come. We want him to say sorry..," Sharma said.

Asked whether the Commission had powers to arrest him, Sharma said, "we have the powers to arrest him. NCW is above MLA or MP."

Sharma also flayed the ruling CPI(M) for not forwarding a woman member's sexual harassment complaint against its MLA P K Sasi to the police.

"They have reprimanded him, suspended him for six months but they have not reported the matter to the police. A complaint should have gone to the police," she said.

The CPI(M) has said Sasi was suspended from the party's primary membership for six months after it was found that he had conversed with the woman "in a manner not befitting a party leader."&nbsp;

The National Commission for Women Saturday accused the Catholic Church of not protecting the interest of a nun, who has alleged that Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal raped her in 2014.

Three Punjab ministers Saturday called for <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/navjot-singh-sidhu-repeats-thief-slur-against-pm-modi-180763">Navjot Singh Sidhu</a>'s resignation from the state cabinet over his jibe at Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, a fallout of the controversial politician's recent trip to Kartarpur in Pakistan.

The row over the trip escalated in the state even as Sidhu backtracked on his claim that Congress president Rahul Gandhi was involved in his decision to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kartarpur corridor.

"Get your facts right before you distort them, Rahul Gandhi Ji never asked me to go to Pakistan. The whole world knows I went to Pakistan on Prime Minister Imran Khan's personal invite," Sidhu tweeted.

A day earlier in Hyderabad, Sidhu had mocked Capt Amarinder Singh, when reporters asked him about going to Pakistan despite his disapproval.

"Rahul Gandhi is my captain. It is he who sent me to Pakistan. Rahul Gandhi is the captain of the captain (Amarinder Singh) also," Sidhu had then said.

Reacting to this, the Punjab ministers said if Sidhu, who holds the local bodies and tourism portfolios, didn't consider Amarinder Singh to be his captain, he should quit the chief minister's team.

Sidhu was attacked over his Hyderabad remark by Rural Development and Panchayat minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Revenue and Rehabilitation minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and Sports Minister Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi. Sodhi said other ministers too are backing Amarinder Singh on this.

"Among the ministers I spoke with are Aruna Chaudhary and Sadhu Singh Dharamsot. We are all solidly behind Capt Amarinder Singh," Sodhi said.

Sources said the issue is likely to be raised in the state cabinet meeting on Monday

"If he does not consider Capt Amarinder as his captain then he should resign on moral grounds from the cabinet and do whatever work is assigned to him by Rahul Gandhi," Bajwa said.

He said Sidhu should apologise to the chief minister.

"My advice to the younger brother is to speak less and concentrate on work," he added. Sarkaria said Sidhu's language while referring to the chief minister was "objectionable."

"Rahul Gandhi is our leader, he is our party's national president. In Punjab, the government is headed by Capt Amarinder Singh, who is our captain in the state and we all work like a team under his leadership,"&nbsp;he said.

"If Mr Sidhu thinks that Amarinder ji is not the captain in the state, or if anybody else doesn't accept him as the captain of the team, they can follow their own course," Sodhi told PTI.

Congress MLA Raj Kumar Verka said, "The party does not agree with Navjot Singh Sidhu's statement, which is objectionable."

Sidhu's wife and former BJP MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu asserted that everyone in the Congress is Rahul Gandhi's soldier.

"We are individual soldiers of the Indian National Congress. We are not the soldiers of the CM sahib or the ministers here," she said Saturday.

Even while taking a dig at Amarinder Singh in Hyderabad, Sidhu had said he is a "father figure"&nbsp;for him.

The Kartarpur corridor will connect the shrine in Pakistan to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Gurdaspur, across the border between the two countries.

The planned corridor will give visa-free access to Indian pilgrims to the place where Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, spent the last years of his life.

Sidhu's visit to Pakistan had riled Amarinder Singh, who said he tried to dissuade Sidhu, following a grenade attack in Amritsar that left three people dead.

Since his return from Kartarpur, Sidhu has been criticised for lavishing praise on Imran Khan, who too showered special attention on him.

He was also targeted over a photograph which showed him posing with Gopal Singh Chawla, the Pakistan Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee head who is considered pro-Khalistan.

But Sidhu claimed "tens of thousands"&nbsp;of people wanted to take pictures with him in Kartarpur and he didn't know Chawla.&nbsp;

Congress party on Saturday alleged that Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader and Cabinet Minister KT Rama Rao, son of caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, increased his assets by 424 per cent since 2014.

"In 2014 KT Rama Rao and his spouses disclosed their total assets at Rs 7,98,79,449 but in 2018 they disclosed their total assets at Rs 41,82,94,428, which means a 424 per cent increase in his assets in the last four years," said Madhu Yashki Goud, secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC), while speaking to ANI.

Goud said that in 2016 Rao went on a tour to Singapore and Malaysia to meet investors and bring a huge amount of investment to Telangana to create more jobs. "However, he was not only accompanied by a higher official, but also a controversial businessman Teja Raju who is the son of Satyam Computers founder Rama Linga Raju, who has tainted a past," said Goud.

Goud alleged that KT Rao personally took Teja Raju and toured with him across Singapore and Malaysia and the money which was made in Telangana was parked in two countries and was re-routed back to Teja Raju's company.

Thirty-four years after the Bhopal gas tragedy, survivors continue to demand proper rehabilitation and adequate compensation besides proper medical treatment for ailments caused by the toxic leak.

In what is termed as the world’s worst industrial disaster, over 15,000 people were killed after methyl isocyanate leaked on the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984 from the pesticide plant of Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) in the city.

More than five lakh people were affected due to the toxic leak.

Various organisations fighting for gas leak survivors have been seeking proper medical care, adequate compensation and cleaning of the groundwater and soil which became contaminated after the incident.

The survivors’ bodies including the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmchari Sangh, Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangharsh Morcha, Children Against Dow Carbide and the Bhopal Group for Information and Action (BGIA) issued a joint statement Sunday accusing the Madhya Pradesh and central governments of neglecting the victims.

Rachna Dhingra of the Bhopal Group for Information and Action said, “Recent scientific studies show that deaths and diseases attributable to exposure to Union Carbide’s gases continue to occur in Bhopal. Yet, over 80 per cent of the recommendations of the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee for medical rehabilitation of victims remain to be implemented.

Further, funds meant for providing employment to survivors and their children are being diverted for building roads, drains and parks by a minister for his electoral constituency, she alleged.

President of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmchari Sangh Rashida Bee said, “Since 2004…the contamination has spread to 42 settlements around the factory with a population of over one hundred thousand. But, the governments at the state and the centre have done nothing.”

While claiming that about 20,000 persons died due to the gas tragedy and its subsequent effects, convener of Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sanghathan (BGPMUS) Abdul Jabbar said, “The pittance which was disbursed as compensation in most instances was never enough to take care of their daily needs.

“Finding gainful employment in accordance with the reduced capacity to work, and to lead a dignified life has been a serious challenge for survivors,” he said.

Accusing the state government of persistent apathy, Jabbar said, “Proper protocol for treatment of most gas-related ailments has not been evolved even after 34 years.”

Jabbar also alleged that the toxic waste generated during UCIL’s operation from 1969 to 1984 was dumped in and around the plant, leading to severe soil and water contamination.

“A comprehensive study to estimate the extent and gravity of the damage has not been carried out. Instead, the magnitude of the problem has been grossly underestimated by authorities,” he said.

India's Sherpa or Chief negotiator Shaktikanta Das, replying to WION's question on terror said, "PM raised the issue of terror and the way it undermines human life and also economies and society. PM emphasised that the Hamburg declaration should be implemented by all countries. " PM had also given 9 point agenda to tackle fugitive economic offenders which called on Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to define economic offenders. On the sidelines of G20, PM Modi also met a number of world leaders including Chinese President Xi for the fourth time since he assumed office and invited South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for the Republic day celebrations. Speaking after the bilateral, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said, "PM extended South Africa Pres Cyril Ramaphosa invitation to be the chief guest for India's Republic Day in 2019 and Ramaphosa accepted."

India's first locomotive-less less train, known as Train 18, breached the 180 kmph speed limit during a test run on Sunday, a senior railway official said here.

When this Rs 100-crore indigenously designed train is made operational, it will become the country's fastest train.

"Train 18 breached the 180 kmph speed limit in the Kota-Sawai Madhopur section. The major trials are now over, with just some more remaining. Based on the reports, fine tuning would be done if needed. As of now no major technical problem has cropped up," S Mani, General Manager of Integral Coach Factory (ICF) that has manufactured the train, said.

"We expect Train 18 to commence its commercial run from January 2019. Normally the trials take three months. But now it is happening faster than expected," Mani added.

If all things go well, Train 18 will replace the current Shatabdi Express - a day train. Train 18 is capable of touching 200 kmph provided the rest of Indian Railways' system such as tracks and signals permit, officials said.

The ICF will roll out one more Train 18 this fiscal and four by the next fiscal.

On October 29, the high-tech, energy-efficient, self-propelled (engine-less) train was flagged off here by Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani.

With 16 coaches, the train will have the same passenger carrying capacity as that of the Shatabdi Express. It has aerodynamically designed driver cabins at both ends for quicker turn-around at destinations.

The train sports an advanced regenerative braking system which saves power. The fully air-conditioned train offers better passenger comfort and safety, as all equipment are fixed under the carriage so that more space is available on board, officials said.

News brief: Big stories of the day

Justice Kurian Joseph, who retired from the Supreme Court on Thursday, is of the view that the retirement age for all judges in different layers of the judiciary must go up to 70 years for the better utilisation of their experience and expertise.

Talking to ANI exclusively on Saturday, Justice Joseph said, "In this particular discharge of function as a judge, starting from the Civil Judge up to the Supreme Court, the retirement age must go up to 70 years. In certain tribunals such as Human Rights, the government itself has passed a law saying that the judge can continue up to 70 years."

"So why not discharge this function as a judge himself up to 70 years. So in all domains of the judiciary the age must be increased. The reason is that with time, judges gain more experience. That experience can be utilised for better and expeditious disposal of the cases," he added.

Sharing details of his long and eventful career in the echelons of Indian judiciary, he said, "I started in the year 2000 in the High Court of Kerala as a judge almost 10 years I was there. I went to Himachal Pradesh as the Chief Justice for three years. Thereafter, I came to the Supreme Court for five years and eight months. I did dispose of about 66,000 cases in Kerala, over 15,000 in Himachal Pradesh and over 8,000 cases in the Supreme Court. It is, therefore, a long satisfying career."

He also expressed no regrets about the unprecedented press conference on January 12, 2018, in which he along with three other judges of the Supreme Court-Justice Chelameswar, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, now the Chief Justice of India, Justice M B Lokur-had flagged off various other issues pertaining to the functioning of the top court Justice Joseph said, "We pointed that the Supreme Court was not going in right direction. Many aspects we brought in the notice of the then Chief Justice (Dipak Misra) to put things on the proper path. Since there was no result, we thought there was no other option but to bring it to the notice of the nation."

"There was one other reason. My position has always been that there are two watchdogs, one of which is the media. We came out to let there be an awareness that we have done our best. Despite barking the master is in deep slumber. So we decided to bite," he added, asserting that things have improved since then and steps are being taken, which will take time.

"Institutional system and practices need to be put in place. It will take time," said Justice Joseph.

On the other changes that he considers must be a priority of higher judiciary, he talked about public interest litigation (PIL). "I feel the Supreme Court must have a revisit on the type of PILs the top court should be entertaining now. It should also consider as to whether it should spend its time on non-issues which are purely academic or it should give priority to burning issues of the country."

Hailing Constitution and virtues embodied in it, Justice Joseph said, "Our Constitution is a beautiful book and contains good values of all the religions. India is a secular country. Indian secularism has a very special feature which no other country has. That special feature is that it welcomes all religion and gives space to them. It allows a citizen to practice or not to practice any religion. But there is only one restriction that there should not be a violation of any of the fundamental rights."

Talking about the appointment of Judges, Justice Joseph opined, "I have a feeling that there should be secretariat system into practice. Unfortunately, that Secretariat has not yet been formed. Probably sometimes, the Collegium may not get inputs in proper perspective."

On being asked whether he thinks, corruption exists in higher echelons of the judiciary, he said, "I will never agree that there is corruption in the higher level of the judiciary. It has never come to my notice. For the low level, it is for the state concerned to take action."

In reply to a question, Justice Joseph, who was the third senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, also said that he will not accept any job but will be available for any service towards the nation other than accepting a job under any government.&nbsp;

Former Union Minister and Congress leader Jitin Prasad on Saturday said that Congress party will reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petroleum products if it comes to power in Telangana.&nbsp;

Outlining that he has previously served as petroleum minister in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, Prasad while addressing the media said, "The crude oil prices internationally have reached the rock bottom during the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government but the petroleum prices have reached highest ever since Independence in the BJP government. During the Congress government, the petrol prices were lower as compared to the present prices in the country. Congress ensured that the upstream companies of oil and the Finance Ministry reduced the burden on the common man and did not let oil prices go beyond a certain point. But the central government doesn't believe in all that. The state government in Telangana has earned huge money by collecting VAT prices on petrol."

He also attacked the state government for charging high VAT on petroleum products and said that Congress will reduce the same, "The state government under Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) is charging the highest VAT charges on petroleum. The VAT charges in Karnataka, where &nbsp;Congress is in power are very less compared to Telangana. The burden should be reduced on common man but it has been increased by the TRS government."

He also alleged that caretaker Chief Minister of Telangana, K Chandrashekar Rao is anti-farmer and has not done enough to improve literacy rates of the state.&nbsp;

Two of the seven <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/seven-indian-ilfs-employees-held-hostage-by-local-staff-in-ethiopia-180709">IL&amp;FS employees</a> held hostage in Ethiopia by unpaid local staff have been released on health grounds, a source said.

The two had sent an e-mail from captivity to the Indian Embassy on their medical condition, the source said, adding that the embassy helped in securing their release.

Harish Bandi, one of the two employees released, was suffering from gastric issues and swelling in one of his fingers while the other, Bhaskar Reddy, was down with severe fever.

"A mail was written to the Indian Embassy in Ethiopia, which acted promptly and with the help of local police the two employees were released," the source close to the development said.

Both the employees were then taken to a local hospital near the project site with the help of police, and from there to the capital city Addis Ababa, where they are recuperating.

The five employees currently in captivity are surviving on boiled rice, sweet potatoes and vegetables they had grown in their camp area, but the stock may not last for long, the source added.

The seven Indian workers of a unit of IL&amp;FS have been held hostage since November 25 at three sites in Ethiopia's Oromia and Amhara states by unpaid local staff.

IL&amp;FS had defaulted on paying both taxes and local employee pensions for nine months.

The local workers have supposedly not been given salaries for October and November by a subsidiary of IL&amp;FS Transportation Networks (ITNL).

A possible termination of some road projects being built by Indian and Spanish joint ventures may have triggered local employees to take such an action.

The employees were reported to be working on road construction projects for joint ventures between IL&amp;FS Transportation Networks Ltd and Spanish firms Elsamex S.A. And Ecoasfalt S.A.

An earlier attempt to escape by these seven employees was thwarted by locals, as they thought if these employees leave, they would not get their dues, the source added.

Indian employees of ITNL in Ethiopia too have not received salaries from July 2018, the source added.

ITNL, through its wholly owned subsidiary Elsamex SA, has been executing road projects across three sites in Ethiopia.

In a statement on Saturday, the cash-strapped Infrastructure Leasing &amp; Financial Services (IL&amp;FS) said the two employees of ITNL were released as a result of collective and sustained engagement with various authorities.

The five other employees of ITNL are being held captive in the African nation.

Four staffers -- Sukhvinder Singh, Bishnu Nagaraju, Chaitanya Hari and Khurram Imam -- are under house arrest at one of the locations of Nekemte-Bure road project, while another Indian expat Neeraj Raghuwanshi is been held hostage at a different location at the same project site.

Apart from the above mentioned, there are eight other Indian employees of ITNL who are in Addis Ababa and their movements have not been restricted, the source said.

ITNL's subsidiary has employed close to 800 Ethiopian workers for its three construction sites.

In Saturday's statement, IL&amp;FS said it has been making all-round efforts, in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India and the Indian Embassy in Addis Ababa, to ensure the safe and early return of its employees.

ITNL had sought approval on November 16, 2018, through its authorised dealer bank, to remit funds overseas but approvals are awaited, the statement said.

ITNL is the largest build-operate-transfer (BOT) road asset owner in the country with approximately 13,100 lane km in its portfolio.

It has an international footprint covering Spain, Portugal, and Latin America with the acquisition of Elsamex S.A., a Spain-based highway operations and maintenance and allied services provider company.

IL&amp;FS Group and its various subsidiaries, including ITNL, are facing a liquidity crisis and have defaulted on various debt payments.

As of October 8, 2018, the total debt of the group stood at Rs 94,215.6 crore.

After the IL&amp;FS crisis had a cascading effect on the market, the government on October 1 superseded its board and appointed a seven-member board headed by Uday Kotak as the chairman. The new board is working on a resolution plan for the debt-ridden company.&nbsp;

An intelligence-based operation had led to the arrest of Syed Shazia, a woman in her early 30s from Bandipore, a fortnight ago. It was seen that she had many accounts on social networking sites such as Facebook and Instagram which many youths in the Valley followed, they said.

Officials from the central security agencies had been keeping a watch on the Internet Protocol (IP) address used by Shazia for several months. She used to converse with youths and would promise to meet them only if a certain “consignment” was delivered from one place to another, the officials said.

Shazia had been in touch with some officials in the police department as well, but the officials termed it a usual tactic of “double-cross” as she used to report the movement of troops and “not so sensitive” information to her handlers across the border.

During interrogation, she told the investigators about the presence of some more women in militants ranks who had been tasked with luring youths into militancy, they said.

A week before her arrest on November 17, the Jammu and Kashmir Police had arrested Aysia Jan (28) for carrying 20 grenades in Lawaypora on the city outskirts, after receiving inputs about militants trying to smuggle arms and ammunition into the city.

Besides grenades, the police had also seized ammunition from her possession, they said.

Her monitoring had started during the probe of a case from September last year when the police killed Abu Ismail, the Lashkar-e-Taiba terror chief in the valley, and Chotta Qassim. Both were involved in last year’s gunning down of Amarnath pilgrims in which eight people were killed. Some documents and materials were seized from the encounter site in the outskirts of Srinagar city which indicated that an unidentified woman hailing from North Kashmir was involved in supplying arms and ammunition to the two terrorists.

It was in April this year, the woman was identified as Syed Shazia. Continuous monitoring of her social media presence showed that she was getting diktats from across the border for honey trapping and luring youths into militancy from across the border, they said.

She was in constant touch with Sherwan alias Ali of Jaish-e-Mohammed terror outfit who introduced her to Pakistan-based terrorists Sufiyan and Qasim Khan Gauri.

Later, she started working as an overground worker from Jaish terror group and was acting as the main conduit for ensuring delivery of weapons to other parts of the valley.

Before her arrest, a special police officer hailing from Handwara was picked up by police for informing Shazia that her phone had been kept on monitoring.

It was found that the special police officer identified as Irfan had been passing information to Shaiza, they said. She was arrested under various sections of Ranbir Penal Code (the equivalent of IPC) and Arms Act.
