The Narendra Modi government came to the defence of Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Friday after he drew flak from several quarters over his remarks criticising those leading protests and guiding students to carry out arson and violence.

Speaking to ANI, Union Minister and former Army Chief Gen (Retd.) VK Singh defended the comments made by Bipin Rawat and asked the opposition not to politicise everything.

Singh also said that there was nothing political in asking students to maintain peace while protesting.

"In our great country, the opposition can turn anything into a controversy. Ideal would have been to see the statement into context in which Army Chief has said a particular thing. Ask him what he meant. I don't see any politics in it. If I tell students don't unnecessarily damage property, is it politics? Search your heart and ask this question. Cross-check with Army Chief and in what context he might have said it," he said.

"If I play football, the opposition will say it's politics. If you don't understand the context, go and check with him. If he had given advice to students to not indulge in arson, it's not a bad thing. Don't know what is so wrong in it?" Singh said.

Singh's defence of Gen Rawat came a day after the Army Chief's remarks while addressing an event in the national capital on Thursday.

The opposition alleged that the comments were political in nature and the Army Chief should desist from indulging in politics.

Singh also pointed out that while the BJP and its ministers were trying to remove misconceptions regarding the CAA and NRC, the opposition was still trying to create confusion regarding it.

"I will take you back to the land acquisition bill. All states were consulted, suitable amendment was passed and then myths started circulating and goalposts were changed. It is exactly the same thing that is happening today. We know who is doing it. People are churning lies and I am aghast. We reduced the time period from 11 years to five years (for granting citizenship to minorities from neighbouring countries) it becomes a Hindu -Muslim issue. The way things have been done and the internet is churning out stories, and none of the pseudo-intellectuals and politicians shouting at the pitch of their voice is bothered about the country. They are concerned over their image and awards," the former Army Chief said.

He further said that the country belongs to everyone born here even if their parents were foreigners.

"Where are the doubts? About papers and certificates required, this is a false narrative. I appeal to reasonable people, can't do this with unreasonable people. It pains me. Those who are born in India are Indians and no one can take away their citizenship" he said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday accused Congress of spreading rumours about the newly-amended citizenship law and challenged party leader Rahul Gandhi to highlight even one clause in the Act which has any provision to take away the citizenship.

"Congress and company are spreading rumours that this act will take away the citizenship of minorities. I challenge Rahul to show even one clause in the act that has provision to take away citizenship. Do not disrupt the peace in the country and lead people astray," Shah said.

India today retired the iconic MiG-27 fighter jet fleet stationed at the Jodhpur airbase decades after it was introduced into the Air Force.

The fighter jet was used by former Soviet-built aircraft in the last stages of the Afghanistan war. It was inducted into the Indian Air Force in 1985.

The plane proved its mettle during the Kargil war in 1999 firing precision-guided missiles at enemy positions dug deep into the trenches. It had also provided India an edge during "Operation Parakram" in the India-Pakistan standoff in 2001 after the Parliament attack.

The plane meant to fly in low altitude could hit ground-based targets. The MiG-27 was therefore used in a strategic, stealthy role to conduct ground assaults on enemy positions.

The tactical aircraft was exported by the former Soviet Union initially to Warsaw Pact countries and then in a big way to India in the 1980s. A forerunner of the MiG-23, it turned out to be a dedicated ground attack aircraft which carried out attacks against entrenched enemy strongholds

India was given license to produce the MiG-27 under the "Bhadhur" designation. NATO had codenamed the jet "flogger". It could operate within a range of 780 km at a top speed of 1,885 kmph. The meximum height at which it could operate was 46,000 feet.

The MiG-27 was upgraded by the Indian Air Force to ensure its strike capability, however, in recent years the fleet experienced several crashes.

Now, the MiG-27 squadron will be plated on March 31, 2020, with December 27 being its last flying day.

India ranked 112th globally at the World Economic Forum’s latest ‘Global Gender Gap Index 2020 rankings’, slipping four places since 2018 in terms of gender parity which proves to be an effective “means to benchmark progress.”

India’s drop in ranking came as the world witnessed an overall improvement in the quest towards gender parity. Gender parity has a fundamental bearing on whether or not economies and societies thrive.

Developing and deploying one-half of the world’s available talent has a huge bearing on the growth, competitiveness and future-readiness of economies and businesses worldwide.

While Iceland continues to be the most gender-neutral country, India ranked below all its neighbouring countries, except Pakistan, amid increasing disparities in terms of women’s participation in the development of the country.

“None of us will see gender parity in our lifetimes, and nor likely will many of our children. That’s the sobering finding of the Global Gender Gap Report 2020, which reveals that gender parity will not be attained for 99.5 years,” the WEF said.

In the 14th Gender Gap Report 2020, out of the 153 assessed countries, India ranked in the bottom five in the sections of ‘Economic participation and opportunity’; and ‘Health and survival’, the survey revealed.

In terms of economic participation and opportunity, India stands even below Saudi Arabia, a country where women are governed under the guardianship system and are stripped away of taking any major decisions about themselves without the consent of the assigned man.

WEF reported a very low representation of women on company boards in India (13.8 per cent) and ranked at 117 for wage equality for similar work.

Despite the Indian government's untiring efforts with the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Andolan’ (Save the girl child, educate the girl child), India stands at 112 in terms of Education attainment, according to the report.

In terms of Health and survival, India stands even below Pakistan, ranking at 150 out of the 153, with an extremely low sex ratio of 91 girls: 100 boys.

However, India ranked in the top 20 in the section of Political empowerment, ranking at 18, even when the global political arena remains the ‘worst-performing’ dimension with women holding 25.2 per cent parliamentary seats globally.
India is still stuck in its efforts to pass the Bill for reservation of 1/3rd parliamentary seats for women as it ranks globally 122 for women in parliamentary positions.

"Supporting gender parity is critical to ensuring strong, cohesive and resilient societies around the world. For business, too, diversity will be an essential element to demonstrate that stakeholder capitalism is the guiding principle," said WEF's Founder and Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab.

The Indian Air Force on Thursday bid adieu to the legendary aircraft - the Mig 27 - which helped India win the 1999 Kargil war against the Pakistanis.

The Indian Air Force inducted the Soviet-made machine designed by Mikoyan Gurevich (Mig) into service in 1985. The NATO code-name given to the aircraft was 'Flogger'. The Mig 27 proved its capability and along with the British SEPECAT Jaguar went on to form India's fleet of ground attack aircraft.

While many may disregard its role, the Mig 27 is not like the Mig 21 and nor is it like the Mig 29. The Mig 21 is an interceptor aircraft, which as the name suggests, intercepts foreign aircraft violating Indian air space, a role which revolves around defence. The Mig 29 is a multi-role fighter aircraft which, as the name suggests again, can have multiple roles in given operations. These roles may include of air-to-air 'dog fights' as well as air-to-surface operations and aerial reconnaissance, among others.

The Mig 27 unlike the Mig 21 and Mig 29 plays a more ground-based role. Designed for surface-to-air operations, the Mig 27 is a dedicated ground attack aircraft which carries out sorties against ground-based targets. Such aircraft are usually slower in speed than other categories, considering the weight of the additional armour and heavy-duty ammunition it employs. Such aircraft usually operate along with the cover of air-superiority aircraft such as the Mig 29 and Su 30 combat aircraft.

In it's time with the Indian Air Force, the fleet of Mig 27's proved its capability in utilising bombs, rockets, precision munitions (guided by laser or TV) as well as air-to-air missiles. It's computer and equipment enabled it to have an excellent forward-vision as well as a 360 degree eye on the sky, proving it's mettle and establishing its true worth to ground attack operations.

The Bahadur was designed as a single-pilot aircraft, which could take-off with a maximum of roughly 20,000 kg, including arms & munitions and body weight. It could operate within a range of 780 km at a top speed of 1,885 kmph. The meximum height at which it could operate was 46,000 ft. As far as the enemy was concerned, this was a Lamborghini in the air, equipped with the armour of a tank, firing rockets and dropping bombs on them.

The comparatively stronger undercarriage undercarriage and heavy-duty landing gear enable the 'Bahadur' to operate from uneven or even unpaved airbases, which in times of war and emergencies plays a very important factor. The aircraft can specifically have a huge impact on enemy ground units in open areas, like the Thar desert.

The aircraft's capability of launching guided as well as unguided (or free-fall) munitions made it the centre-piece of the aerial component of Operation Safed Sagar. The ultimate aim of the operation was to flush out Pakistani troops from the positions they occupied in the Kargil sector.

The Mig 27 was also inducted by the Sri Lankan Air Force in 2000, playing a huge role in fighting the civil war against the LTTE.

The Citizenship Amendment bill sailed through both houses of Parliament earlier this month and became a law after the getting assent of President Ram Nath Kovind. Since the enactment of the Act, anti-CAA protests have erupted in parts of the country during which several clashes between police and protesters have taken place.

Panic has gripped farmers across western India as swarms of locust destroyed crops. The insects have already ravaged farmlands.

Experts say that the unseasonable appearance of locusts may be due to the change in wind pattern after the prolonged monsoon.

Locusts generally come in July. Meanwhile, farmers have said that the government did not take timely action.

They said that the government did not spray insecticides until the situation went out of control.

Locust swarm displays a 'swarm behaviour' which essentially means a collective motion of a large number of animals of similar size.

Just one swarm can cover up to 20% of the land surface of the earth, affecting the livelihood of 10% of the world’s population.

They can consume up to 200 tonnes of vegetation a day.The locusts in a swarm tend to move in the same direction while avoiding collision with each other.

What is a locust?

Belongs to the grasshopper family. Plague of locusts is a natural disaster, a locust swarm can fly up to 90 miles per day.

Rainfall can increase locusts by 20-fold in 3 months. Adult locust can eat equivalent to their weight every day. There can be 80 million locusts in a swarm. Locusts can also turn cannibal.

How do locusts wreak havoc?

Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, on Wednesday, slammed China saying that the Chinese communists have the power of gun which is weaker than the power of truth.

The Dalai Lama made the statement at the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, the place where Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment more than two millennia ago.

With his advancing age Dalai Lama is a figure caught in a tight spot.

The question of who will succeed him has become more pressing than ever.

The 84-year old leader is currently on a two-day visit to the Buddhist holy site of Bodh Gaya.

This is the place where Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment more two thousand years ago.

From this holy site - the Dalai Lama made this declaration aimed at china.

'The power of gun vs the power of truth'

A statement in stark contrast to something he has been saying for the last few years.

Not too long ago — the Dalai Lama had said that the Tibetan issue was no longer a struggle for independence.

And surprisingly - he had also praised the Chinese communist party.

His remarks were meant to please china which is harnessing Buddhism as a soft power across Asia.

The Chinese regime is spending 3 billion dollars to revive the birthplace of Buddha - the Nepalese town of Lumbini.

But the only problem — Beijing is adamant on preventing the Dalai Lama from deciding his successor.

And Dalai Lama's statement indirectly raises pressure on India which hasn't spoken much on the issue off late.

India's policy on Tibet has bounced back several times. What we saw during the Doklam crisis may have been a result of that.

PM Modi had permitted the Dalai Lama to visit Tibetan communities in the state of Arunachal Pradesh — but these were territories claimed by China. Beijing had vociferously objected to this.

The people's liberation army of China has said that its ties with the Indian military are improving with strategic dialogue.

This provides an upbeat picture of the relations between the two countries.

So the flip-flop in statements clearly shows the Dalai Lama's dilemma.

The Wuhan and the recent Mamallapuram summit has helped break ice between India and China after decades.

The Dalai Lama feels he is caught in between. He feels he may be losing voice with India's growing relations with China.

Despite being the world's most famous Buddhist — he has kept himself out of anybody's strategic interests.

But now with the geo-political order changing — he fears that his institution could lose relevance.

"It's after a long time that a great football match was to take place and I came to watch it. I am a fan of Real Kashmir FC. I came late but the team scored two goals while I was there. They won and I am congratulating them. My best wishes to the team," said Madhav after witnessing the game.

Real Kashmir Football Club in Kashmir is making a slow rise which has caught the imagination of football fans across the globe for the last three years. All the sporting activities came to a grinding halt after government-imposed restrictions in the Kashmir valley, just days before the abrogation of article 370 and 35-A of the Indian constitution.

"I study in Chennai and I came here to watch this match. This club inspires us towards sports activities. Be it hot or cold, people in Kashmir turn up to support this club," said a boy, who had come for the game.

The Real Kashmir FC has already qualified I-league and beaten the top Indian football clubs. The club has created waves at the Indian domestic league and what's special now is that the team has got the backing of sportswear giant Addidas.

Also known as the 'snow leopard', Real Kashmir Football Club is the first such team that is uniting Kashmir. Recently, the team added players from Nigeria and Scotland to their colours which is attracting more people to witness the game being played under the winter sun.

India: Football makes a comeback in J&K

It is not a new practice for Tamilians to show their love and respect for their icons by building temples in their honour. After temples were built for former Chief Ministers MGR, Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi and a host of popular actors, a Narendra Modi temple have now been built in the Eragudi village in Tamil Nadu’s Trichy district.

The temple in honour of the current Indian Prime Minister was constructed by Shankar, a 50-year-old farmer who has been an admirer of the leader, since his days as Gujarat Chief Minister.

“I used to look up to him right from the time he was Chief Minister of Gujarat. Especially I have admired the manner in which he has developed the infrastructure in the State. The moment we knew that he was chosen as the PM candidate of the BJP, I was excited and have voted for him since then” Shankar told WION.

Constructing the temple, however, was not an easy task. Shankar says that he had to wait for a period of eight months for his 8ft x 8ft temple to get ready. “Our main source of income is agriculture on our 10-acre plot and I also have to take care of the needs of my children who are in college. So we first build the foundation and waited for over three months, later the pillars were erected, following which the tiles were laid and work was completed.”

Shankar also recalls that their family was very poor and how he lost his parents at a young age, how he had to discontinue his education while he was in his fourth grade." it was only by doing menial jobs that I earned some money to go to Saudi and work. I was rearing camels and sheep there, after working herd there for many years, I came back to our native and bought cultivable some land."

Besides a bust of Modi, the temple also has portraits of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Kamaraj, MGR, Jayalalithaa, and also that of Home Minister Amit Shah, Mahatma Gandhi and current TN Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.

When asked if he had benefitted from any schemes of the Modi Government over the last few years, he said that he immensely benefited from the PM-KISAN scheme that provided Rs.6000 every year to farmers who held land up to 2 hectares. “While Congress had announced various schemes for farmers during their rule, much of the benefits didn’t reach us as there was a vicious cycle of middlemen. But now all the benefits are being directly transferred to our account.”

Recalling the trauma that their modest family underwent in 2013 after his daughter couldn’t get admission into a medical college, despite having scored 1105/1200 in her State Board exams, he stated that she had to settle for an Engineering degree by sacrificing her dream of becoming a Doctor. “Later when the NEET(National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) was introduced by the Modi Government, it had ensured a level playing field such that even students from very humble backgrounds can aspire to get a medical seat by merit. My daughter couldn’t become a Doctor, but we hope that our son who is now in his 12th grade will clear NEET and join a medical college.”

Besides the KISAN scheme, Shankar says that their family has also built their first toilet under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Our family was in such a situation that we had always used firewood for cooking, but the Ujjwala Yojana changed things for the better and now we have access to LPG cylinders and cooking stoves.

On being asked about any specific requests he has for the Prime Minister, he said that if the river interlinking project were to be implemented, in his drought-prone district, lakhs of farmers like him would be able to sustain agriculture.

“I went to Mamallapuram to catch a glimpse of our PM during the Modi-Xi summit there in October and was able to see his motorcade from a distance. But I would consider it my life’s greatest opportunity if I get to meet our PM once, and I would fall on his feet to seek his blessings.”

Shankar says that many people have been flocking to his village every day to see the ‘Namo’ temple, he hopes to someday call top BJP leaders to perform grand rituals at his temple. Either way, he says he would perform the daily offerings at the temple for the rest of his life.
