As part of his four-day visit, President Jair Bolsonaro will arrive in India on Friday.

According to reports, besides participating in the Republic Day celebrations as the chief guest, Bolsonaro's trip will also focus on boosting trade ties with India.

This will be his first visit to India since assuming power in 2018. He will be accompanied by seven ministers, top officials and a large business delegation.

"This visit is expected to further enhance and strengthen the multi-faceted ties between India-Brazil," the External Affairs Ministry said while announcing Bolsonaro's state visit to India.

A former army captain, Bolsonaro won a landslide victory in Brazil's presidential election in October 2018 and took the reins of the country in January last year.

The last presidential visit from Brazil was by President Michel Temer in October 2016 on the sidelines of the eighth BRICS summit in Goa. Modi visited Brazil in November to attend the XI BRICS Summit.

Brazilian presidents have graced the Republic Day Parade in 1996 and 2004.

India-Brazil ties have been on an upswing in the last few years.

The volume of bilateral trade was $8.2 billion in 2018-19. This included $3.8 billion worth of Indian exports to Brazil and $4.4 million as imports by India. Both the governments feel there is huge potential to enhance the bilateral trade further.

Indian investments in Brazil were around $6 billion and Brazilian investments in India are estimated at USD 1 billion in 2018.

Brazilian investments in India are mainly in automobiles, IT, mining, energy and biofuels sectors. India has invested in Brazil's IT, pharmaceutical, energy, agri-business, mining and engineering sectors.

Bilateral ties were elevated to a strategic partnership in 2006, heralding a new phase in India-Brazil relations.

"The relations are strong not only at the bilateral level, but also at plurilateral fora such as BRICS, IBSA, G-20 and in multilateral bodies particularly the UN," the MEA said.

Both the countries are also strong contenders for permanent membership of the UN Security Council.

Ahead of external affairs minister S Jaishankar's Tunisia visit, Tunisian envoy to India Nejmeddine Lakhal lauded New Delhi role on its partnership with Africa and said his country shares its outlook with India on "zero tolerance" policy towards terrorism. Speaking to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Lakhal said as a non-permanent member of the UNSC, Tunisia and India will discuss many things of common interest at the multilateral during Jaishankar's visit.

WION: How do you see the India-Tunisia ties?

Nejmeddine Lakhal: Since the establishment of Diplomatic relations in 1958, ties between our two friendly countries has grown steadily - both on bilateral and multilateral levels. Today, Tunisia and India enjoy warm and cordial relations founded on mutual respect and trust, Common universal values and principals, and shares apprehensions and views on many regional and international issues and challenges, including sustainable development, climate change, counter-terrorism, and cybersecurity.

The decisions and recommendations of the 12 sessions of the Tunisian-Indian Joint Committee held in Delhi in October 2017, and the adoption of a visionary “roadmap” on that occasion, are expected to give a new dimension to the Tunisian- Indian partnership in many key sectors and areas of common interest. Today Tunisia-India are stronger, and we are working to make the future even brighter for the benefit of Tunisian and Indian people.

WION: Indian external affairs minister is set to visit Tunisia, what will be the top focus?

Nejmeddine Lakhal: The second official visit of an Indian minister of external affairs to Tunisia since 1958. Dr Jaishankar’s visit to Tunisia will be an ideal opportunity to discuss not only bilateral issues, but also multilateral questions of common interest, in particular in light of Tunisia’s UNSC non-permanent membership in 2020-2021, and India's candidacy to the same seat for 2021-2022.

So, we are looking forward to His Excellency's visit to Tunisia, and for the high-level meetings he will have in Tunisia, including on the “Fifth session of the Bilateral Political Consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs” to further boost and diversify the areas and sectors of partnership between our two, and for “the 13 session of Tunisia-India Joint Meeting”, to consolidate coordination and concertation between our two countries on regional and international issues of common interest.

WION: Can we expect a high-level visit from either side?

Nejmeddine Lakhal: Definitely, we are always looking for a high-level visit to India, and 2020 could be the year to have such visits.

WION: How do you see India's development aid, India helping in the establishment of soil, water and tissue testing Laboratory in Tunis?

Nejmeddine Lakhal: The establishment of soil, water and tissue testing laboratory project within the India-Africa Forum Summit is just one of the example of Tunisia-India partnership. There are many other sectors where our cooperation is moving forward, including TICs, energy, biotechnology and sciences. With our firm commitment to increase and promote trade, investment and economic between our countries, I am confident that we will be able to make a huge difference in the years to come.

WION: This year, India-Africa summit will take place, what expectations do you have from the summit and have the preparations begun?

Nejmeddine Lakhal: Yes, the preparations for the next the India-Africa Forum Summit is underway.

We already had a mid-term review meeting of the strategic cooperation framework of Africa-India Forum Summit III in New Delhi from September 11-19 last year. The meeting was attended by representatives from the ministry of external affairs, a delegation from the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and representatives of the African Diplomatic Corps in Delhi.

Many other meetings will take place to make sure and the next summit will be another success. I would to take this opportunity to commend support that India is providing to Africa’s development, and Tunisia looks forward to working closely with India for the success of the next session to be held in India in September, 2020. And given its rich and solid expertise in many development areas, Tunisia is ready to partner with India for the implementation of the “IAFS IV” development projects in the African Francophone region of Africa in particular.

WION: How are both countries, working together to fight the scourge of terrorism?

Nejmeddine Lakhal: Terrorism is a significant threat to our societies, global peace and security, and to our shared values of democracy, justice, and the rule of law. Like India, Tunisia has steadfastly maintained “zero tolerance” on terror and violence and strongly condemns terrorism, that has hit both our countries hard.

Tunisia’s position is firm and unequivocal on terrorism anywhere in line with its national policy and its international commitments. Today, no state is immune from the threat of terrorism. However rich or powerful, no single country can defeat terror alone or face the current challenges posed today by various terrorist entities. Only through a strong and constructive international cooperation that we can effectively deal with this major danger.

WION: You are part of OIC, as member of OIC, do you think India should be part of it?

Nejmeddine Lakhal: This is India’s decision. Only India can reply to this question.

After a peaceful Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season of over two-months, the portals of the Lord Ayyappa Temple here were closed after performing customary rituals and pujas on Tuesday.

Though the annual Makaravilakku was held here on January 15, the hill top temple, nestled in a reserve forest in the Western Ghats, was open for devotees to offer worship till Monday evening.

Even the last day of the pilgrimage witnessed heavy rush of devotees, including those from neighbouring states, at the Sannidhanam (temple complex), sources at the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), the apex temple body, which manages the shrine, said.

Customary rites like "aashtadrvya mahaganapathi homam', 'abhishekam' and 'usha nivedyam', were performed under the aegis of tantri (head priest) Mahesh Mohanaru in the early hours of Tuesday.

Per the tradition, the royal designate of the Pandalam Palace, where according to legend Lord Ayyappa had spent his childhood, offered prayers before the sanctum sanctorum.

He later led the procession carrying the sacred jewels 'thiruvabharanam', brought here to be adorned on Lord Ayyappa on the day of Makaravilakku, back to the Palace.

Melsanthi (chief priest), A K Sudheer Namboothiri performed the 'bhasmabhishekam', the offering of holy ash, on the idol of the Lord Ayyappa and closed the doors of the sanctum sanctorum singing 'harivarasanam', the sacred lullaby, marking the culmination of over 60-day pilgrimage season.

The hillock temple would be opened on February 13 for monthly pooja and would receive devotees for the next five days. The shrine, which draws devotees from various parts of the country, had witnessed unprecedented protests by right-wing outfits and BJP workers last year after the CPI(M)-led LDF government decided to implement the September 28, 2018, Supreme Court order lifting the traditional ban on women and girls in menstrual age from offering prayers.

However, this year, against the backdrop of the top court's decision to refer a batch of review pleas against its earlier verdict to a larger bench, the state government had said those women desirous of visiting the hill temple should get a "court order" and it would not encourage activism.

During this season, some young women who came to Sabarimala were not allowed by authorities to trek to the Ayyappa temple.

While addressing a rally, Shah said, "I declare here in Lucknow, that whoever wants to protest against CAA is free to do so but this law will not be rolled back."

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has today granted an opportunity to the persecuted minorities from the neighbouring countries to start a new life," Shah also said, adding that it has "no provision for taking anyone's citizenship away"

He further attacked opposition parties and said, "Canards being spread against CAA by Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaaj Party and Trinamool Congress."

''I challenge Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Bannerjee and Mayawati for a discussion on CAA with me in public forum,'' Shah also said

"Congress has become blind due to vote bank politics," he said. He also blamed the Congress for Partition.

Addressing a rally in support of the CAA, Shah also declared that construction of a Ram temple "touching the skies" in Ayodhya and will begin within three months.

Shah drew a parallel between the opposition and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and said that they speak the same language.

"In effect, the opposition speaks the same language as Imran Khan. They ask for proof of surgical and airstrikes, they oppose abrogation of Art 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and they oppose the CAA," he said.

The Citizenship Amendment bill sailed through both houses of Parliament earlier this month and became a law after the getting assent of President Ram Nath Kovind. Since the enactment of the Act, anti-CAA protests have erupted in parts of the country during which several clashes between police and protesters have taken place.

The bill, now an Act, seeks to grant citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.

The Act came into effect on January 10 despite the protests which are still underway in many parts of the country.

While giving the judgement, the High Court also said that social media influencers should exercise their right to free speech and expression "cautiously" in order to ensure that their message does not harm anyone’s reputation.

"In my view, social media influencers are aware of the influence they wield over other audience and that their statements have a magnified and profound impact on their audience… It is apparent that a social media influencer, such as the present defendant wields the power to influence the public mind. With power also comes responsibility. I do not believe that social media influencer can deliver statements with the same impunity available to an ordinary person. Such a person bears a higher burden to ensure there is a degree of truthfulness in his statements," the judge Kathawali observed.

The court then asked the Bhansali to take down the video and he has been given a week to challenge the court's verdict.

However, the court refused to accept Marico's request to stop Bhansali from uploading any such videos in the future. The court said that the video Bhansali will upload in future will be dealt with in its own merit.

Bhansali's channel 'Beared Chokra' has over one lakh followers. Meanwhile, his video titled "Is Parachute Coconut Oil 100% pure?" has over 20 lakh views.

Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Monday said that Malaysia is a too small of a nation to respond to India's boycott of palm oil with trade retaliation. "We are too small to take retaliatory action. We have to find ways and means to overcome that," Mahathir told reporters in Langkawi, a resort island off the western coast of Malaysia. India, the world's largest edible oil buyer, this month halted Malaysian palm oil imports after Malaysian PM Mohamad spoke out against recent policies of India including abrogation of Article 370 which critics say discriminate against Muslims. Mahathir again criticised India's citizenship law on Monday, saying he believed it was "grossly unfair", a Reuters report said. India has been Malaysia's largest palm oil market for the past five years, presenting the Southeast Asian country with a major challenge in finding new buyers for its palm oil. Benchmark Malaysian palm futures fell nearly 10% last week, their biggest weekly decline in more than 11 years. Meanwhile, trade ministers from India and Malaysia are likely to meet on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos this week, according to a Malaysian government spokesman. Britain's Prince Harry on Sunday expressed sadness over his decision to step down from royal duties. "It brings me great sadness that it has come to this," the Duke of Sussex said. The decision to step down had followed months of talks and had not been a decision he had come to lightly, he said and added, they were not walking away, he explained. The deal with Queen Elizabeth and senior Windsors will see him and his wife Meghan exit official roles to seek an independent future. × Buckingham Palace and the queen announced on Saturday that Harry and Meghan would no longer be working members of Britain’s monarchy, no longer use their "Royal Highness" titles and would now pay their own way in life, freeing them to forge new careers. In a speech to the Sentebale charity on Sunday, a clearly upset Harry said the final outcome was not what he and his American wife, a former actress, had wanted. "Our hope was to continue serving the queen, the Commonwealth and my military associations without public funding. Sadly that wasn't possible," the prince, the sixth-in-line to the throne, said. "I've accepted this knowing it doesn't change who I am, or how committed I am. But I hope that helps you understand what it had come to, that I would step back from all I have ever known to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life." Under the arrangement, Harry will remain a prince and the couple will keep their titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex as they begin a new life split between Britain and North America where they will spend the majority of their time. But they will not take part in any future ceremonial events or royal tours.

Speaking at the event, Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat said that the resurrection of the Tiger Sharks squadron highlights the integration and jointness that are to be the future of the Indian Armed Forces.

"Being equipped with the BrahMos this aircraft will become a game-changer for our armed forces and extensively enhances the security of our maritime domain. The squadron can perform tasks in support of land forces, in protecting vulnerable areas and any other assigned task besides operating in close conjunction with our Navy and Army. Happy targeting in the years ahead and I'm confident that you will earn laurels", General Rawat elaborated.

Lauding the joint efforts of various defence manufacturers and partners Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadurai said, "after the surface-to-surface BrahMos, we discussed an air-launched version, but it was challenging and thought of as impossible, as a missile of the size and weight 2.5 tons had not been integrated into an Air Force platform. But our dedicated teams of BAPL, DRDO and HAL have made it possible indigenously."

Urging the new squadron to serve the nation he said that the long wait in resurrecting the Tiger Sharks was worth it as they have the latest aircraft and latest weapon. He stated that the squadron has to operationalize fast and take up all roles expected - air defence of the southern peninsula and critical national assets in this area of responsibility, besides the maritime role support for Navy and offensive or defensive role for the southern peninsula.

"True to your name you must be lethal at first bite. Bite every time and every mission you get airborne and ensure you are lethal", he added.

Sharing his perspective with WION, on the Thanjavur base and the technical challenges that India overcame to integrate the Brahmos and Sukhoi, Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai, Founder and CEO of BrahMos Aerospace said, "The BrahMos missile has two capabilities - air to ship, air to land. When the need arises to use it against ships, the peninsula will be the main region and when it comes to hitting ground targets, it can be the border areas and land-based adversaries. The squadron in Thanjavur is a part of the strategy to spread the delivery platform and weapons in different places"

"As it is, the Sukhoi is not meant for carrying BrahMos, as its total weapons load has to be around 5.5tons, of which the Brahmos alone is 2.5 tons. We made several modifications including stiffening of the structure to ensure that the missile can be carried in the underbelly of the aircraft, as opposed to the wings, for smaller missiles and bombs", Dr Pillai added.

WION spoke to Retd. Air Marshal Padamjit Singh Ahluwalia to understand the important role that the "Tiger Sharks" are meant to play.

He said, "The Su-30 MKI, has a range of 3000kms when augmented with mid-air-refuelling. A 3000km arc would mean that we can cover right up to Madagascar and perform Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (IRS) roles. Our Sukhois are equipped with good radars and avionics that can detect targets on land and sea. Using the BrahMos it can engage aircraft carriers and other warships with its standoff range of 290kms. With its onboard Electronic Countermeasures(ECM) and self protections devices, the Sukhois at Thanjavur add immense combat potential to the Indian Forces and definitely gives us the edge in Indian Ocean Region".

The Indian Air Force(IAF) inducted Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft at the Thanjavur Air Force base in Tamil Nadu, thus making it the first Sukhoi squadron in southern India.
