Clips of a Police officer in Chennai wearing a red corona-helmet, warning road-users against unnecessarily venturing out in violation of the 21-day lockdown has been going viral.

Made using a discarded helmet, waste paper and painted in bright hues, the coronavirus helmet was designed by Chennai-based artist and entrepreneur Gowtham, who wanted to send a stern and compelling message. Gowtham has been installing artworks in public places, working towards recycling plastic and creating awareness on several contemporary issues, but the Corona helmet is turning out to be his most noted piece of work.

“Almost a week back, on the day of Janta Curfew I saw a lot of people roaming on the roads, as though it was some sort of holiday. There was hardly any awareness of the seriousness of the situation. That’s when I decided that something needs to be done about this”, Gowtham told WION.

At first, he made some placards on coronavirus that read, “If you come out I will come in” and handed them over to the police which they displayed at the nearby flyover and intersection. But Gowtham wanted to take his creativity further and give people the “real look and feel of the coronavirus” and how big a threat it was.

Costing less than Rs.500 (most of which was spent on the paint) the corona helmet was made of discarded materials, given that all the shops were closed due to the ongoing lockdown. In five hours the helmet was painted and ready, after which Gowtham offered it to the nearby Police station. He suggested that this would help the cops in sending out a stern statement, even without brandishing their batons(Lathis).

Gowtham says “the intention was to collaborate art and security in a manner that reaches adults and kids. The best part was that Inspector Rajeesh Babu of the Villivakkam station himself chose to wear the helmet and man the temporary check-post along with his team and ask valid questions to create awareness amongst the public. Every time a vehicle passed by he would stop them and ask them rhetorical questions - “Can I come and sit in between you? What if I come close? Why no masks? Do you know who I am? What if I infect you ?”

Now, this campaign is a success and people appreciate the novel method that we have used, but it is all thanks to the Inspector who was receptive towards this off-beat idea. This is enough motivation for me to start work on other art forms and techniques to ensure that people remain home and safe during this lockdown, Gowtham adds.

PM Narendra Modi addresses the nation in monthly radio show 'Mann Ki Baat'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently addressed the nation as part of his “Mann Ki Baat” segment.

The country is currently grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, with over 900 confirmed cases in the country, and 25 deaths so far.

The PM started off his address by apologising for the extreme steps taken by his administration in the battle against COVID-19.

“I apologise for taking these harsh steps which have caused difficulties in your lives, especially the poor people”, he asserted.

Recently, visuals of migrant labourers around the National Capital Region huddling out of the city caused an uproar on social media. Many of them were compelled to undertake the journey to their hometowns on foot in the absence of public transport.

The PM added, “These tough measures were needed to win this battle. It is a tough fight…”

He reiterated the need to keep India safe, and pitched it as collective responsibility of everybody.

Turns out, the PM has been in constant touch with people on the frontlines of fighting the pandemic.

“During the last few days, I have spoken to many people over the phone, to boost their zeal, in turn, they have increased my enthusiasm too”, he said, while adding that we all should learn from their experiences.

The PM further invoked the hardships faced by first-responders and soldiers during the crisis.

“Many soldiers are fighting the virus from outside the confines of their homes. These are our front line soldiers, especially our brothers and sisters on duty as nurses, doctors, and paramedical staff”, he said.

He also spoke extensively about the healthcare workers and the hardships faced by them amid the crisis.

"To know the capability with which we are dealing with this pandemic at medical level, I spoke to doctors who are leading the frontline in this battle. Their daily activity is synchronous with that of their patients," Modi said.

2020 is the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. While referring to this, he called it a coincidence for it to fall on the same year as the killer COVID-19 pandemic.

"At many places, people have taken their responsibilities very seriously. They quarantined themselves even when they were not showing any symptoms. So when people are behaving so responsibly, it is unfair to ill-treat them," the PM said, probably referring to reports of people harassing health workers.

To culminate his address, the PM asked people to keep up the fight against the virus. “I am with you”, he asserted.

'I'm with you', assures PM Modi during his coronavirus-centred 'Mann Ki Baat' address

It was a rather unpleasing sight at Anand Vihar ISBT in Delhi on Saturday, when thousands of daily wage workers and labourers swarmed up, hoping to take a bus back to their hometowns and villages. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed a 21-day lockdown, most of them lost employment and lodging. With no income and nowhere to stay they had no option but to brave the Covid-19 epidemic and try to return home.

People — only some wearing masks — waited in long queues to board buses at the Anand Vihar Interstate Bus Terminal in Delhi.

The Uttar Pradesh government announced earlier that it had arranged 1,000 buses to transport migrant labourers stranded in the border districts owing to the countywide lockdown. The Delhi government also announced 100 buses for those trying to reach their homes in other states on foot.

These buses were, however, packed to the hilt.

Although the police had made people stand in three queues, the serpentine lines didn't seem to end as there was a steady flow of migrant workers who wanted to go back to their towns and villages citing lack of employment due to the lockdown.

Good Samaritans distributed food to those preparing for their journeys.

Jwatam Kumar (24), who works in a faucet factory, said his unit had been shut due to the lockdown. He is paid Rs 8,000 a month on a fortnightly basis. With no means of making a living and paying for food and accommodation, he wanted to go back home in Aligarh.

"I had made up my mind to walk back, but now I heard through news channels that Uttar Pradesh government has made provision of taking people to their homes. So, I will take the bus," said Kumar, who was headed to Anand Vihar ISBT.

Sachin Kanojia (29), who took a shared auto-rickshaw from Rohtak to Delhi that charged Rs 500 per seat, said the factory he worked in was closed due to the lockdown. He earns Rs 10-12,000 per month but now with no income for the next three weeks, he was heading back home.

"I will get a bus from Anand Vihar," said Kanojia, who was headed to Lucknow.

Like Kanojia and Kumar, Omkar Maurya too was headed home to Amethi. Maurya, who works as a daily wage worker putting up tents for marriage ceremonies, said with no money in his pocket it was better for him to go back home.
